(UPDATE 10:35 AM)- They just couldn’t let Belleville have the spotlight for a day. This morning, the Senators announced that they have fired Head Coach Guy Boucher. Marc Crawford is taking over on an interim basis. The timing is a little strange but it was assumed they would be going in another direction at the end of the year
These are strange times we live in.
Our favourite NHL squad, the Ottawa Senators, have little left to play for. With just 18 games remaining in the regular season, it certainly appears as though Operation Don’t Finish Last will be a spectacular failure.
The Senators find themselves in 31st overall in the National Hockey League with a five point gap between Ottawa and 30th overall. It’s going to take an impressive run down the stretch which would involve winning the occasional hockey game and frankly, I don’t know if they have that in them at this point.
But the other Senators, the ones of the Belleville variety, well all they do is win. Or not lose in regulation anyway.
Once thought to be a sure bet to miss the playoffs, the BSens have gone on an magical run lately and there is not a hamburger in sight. Belleville has picked up at least a point in 15 straight games and now sit just one point back of Tom Pyatt and the Utica Comets for the final playoff spot.
Meaningful hockey games? Yea, I can get into this.
Tonight, they look to keep it rolling against the Manitoba Moose.
If the playoff push isn’t enough to grab your interest, maybe the debut of one of the organization’s top prospects will do the trick.
Erik Brännström had his first practice with the team yesterday and he is expected to play tonight.
Brännström has scored seven times in his rookie season in the American Hockey League, including an overtime winner. He has 28 points in 41 games which is almost unheard of for a 19 year old defenceman in the AHL.
All of Erik Brannstrom’s 7 goals in the AHL this season

And well, if he doesn’t play tonight, we can just watch these YouTube clips until he does.
Or until the Ottawa Senators next game against…the Tampa Bay Lightning. Eeep. Thanks to the good folks at Air Canada and the #ACFanFlight, I’ll be there to cheer the Sens on. Or to get the start in goal. Stay tuned.
Puck drop in Belleville is scheduled for just after 7:00 PM. Will add a line up (which will include Drake Batherson) when it becomes available.
Go BSens Go!
