Draft Lottery Day

Draft Lottery Day

Oh how the times have changed.

Last year, I spent a good six months counting down to this particular event. This time, it didn’t really register until a couple days ago.

Tonight, in a windowless room in an unknown location, Gary Bettman will gather with a few accountants, today’s newspaper and some ping pong balls and then, with the help of a clearly rigged electronic device and some strategically placed magnets, he’ll determine the future of the National Hockey League.

It’s Draft Lottery Day.

And with a little bit of luck, it’s the last Draft Lottery Day we’ll care about for a long, long time.

Through the depths of this rebuild, the Draft Lottery has become one of the most important days on the calendar. And even though we have countless examples of the lottery actually not mattering much and the Draft being a bit of a crapshoot, it’s still an exciting day.

Unlike the last couple years, the Ottawa Senators find themselves a little further down the list of most likely winners.

The Sens come in with a 4.5% chance of landing first overall. Tenth best odds. That works out to about a 9.5% chance at a top two picks, a 72.4% chance at staying right where they are and about a 20% chance of falling back either one or two spots.

So as unlikely as it may be, the Senators have a chance. Winning the Draft Lottery really would be the ultimate sicko move though.

Let’s do it.
