We’re baaaaaaaaaaaack.
With a league-rattling move in the hours before the NHL Entry Draft, the Ottawa Senators sent a strong message to the rest of the league and to the fan base.
They’re done messing around.
Rumours swirled for a good portion of the day but minutes after the 4:00 PM hour, Pierre Dorion made his move. And it’s a big one. The 7th overall pick, the 39th overall pick and a 2024 third round pick for Alex DeBrincat.
Yes, that Alex DeBrincat. And yes, that’s all they gave up.
It comes with some risk of course but on the surface, this is Pierre Dorion’s finest hour. DeBrincat is a two-time 40-goal scorer and entering the prime of his career. He’s the perfect addition to the team’s talented core and he joins the Senators at a time when they are looking to take the next step. And it’s only draft picks going the other way.
DeBrincat has one more year on his deal that comes with a cap hit of $6.4 million and a salary of $9 million. He was the biggest name available this off-season and the Ottawa Senators went out and got him.
It’s a great day to be a Sens fan.
