(UPDATE 3:05 PM)- And it remained quiet for the Senators. Teams kicked tires but obviously nothing really materialized. Senators were in a unique position where they certainly didn’t need to add anything and the players they wanted to move weren’t generating much if any interest. Bryan Murray will speak to the media at 3:30 PM. Press conference available on the Sens website.
(UPDATE 10:59 AM)- Still quiet in Ottawa. Mentioned it this morning but I think if we do see a move today, it’s most likely on the blueline. One of Patrick Wiercioch or Eric Gryba the most likely to move, if the return is there. Jared Cowen was the other option but it seems like the Senators are setting the bar pretty high for him.
In the past, this has always been one of the busiest, most exciting days of the year on SensChirp.
Not so sure that will be the case this year. Despite the recent winning streak, the Senators don’t have their usual deadline label of buyer and instead seem more like sellers. All the talk around this team is about players going out rather than coming in.
It’s one of the rare deadline days when I would say it’s probably safe to go to work.
With that said, Murray does have a few things he’s considering. It seems like a certainty one of the defenceman will move today. Unlikely it will be Phillips but they are getting at least some interest in Wiercioch, Gryba and Cowen. I expect one of those three to move today.
Up front there are decisions to make too. They’d love to move Greening or Legwand but that will be tough unless they take on salary and even then it’s a stretch. Chris Neil’s name is still floating around but his injury situation has complicated things a little bit. Erik Condra’s name has also been in the rumour mill but it’s going to take a huge offer for the Senators to move him.
So that’s where things stand right now. Mostly quiet. But if we’ve learned anything about Bryan Murray, it’s that he almost always has a surprise up his sleeve. I think any big moves in Ottawa will wait till Summer time but maybe there’s something in the cards today?
We shall see.
As always on deadline day, updates appear at the top of this post over the course of the day.
