Deadline Day on SensChirp (Senators Acquire Cozens, Zetterlund)

(UPDATE 3:30 PM)

(UPDATE 3:15 PM) At the buzzer! Sounds like the Senators have acquired 25-year old forward Fabian Zetterlund from the San Jose Sharks. According to Bruce Garrioch, Zach Ostapchuk is going the other way.

(UPDATE 12:10 PM) – And now we have the details. Dylan Cozens, Dennis Gilbert and a 2nd round pick to Ottawa for Josh Norris and Jacob Bernard-Docker. It’s a roll of the dice but in Cozens, Ottawa is getting a younger, healthier, cheaper, tougher player that on paper, looks like a better fit in the lineup.

(UPDATE 11:24 AM) – Seems like Steady Steve is ready to make a splash. No official announcement just yet but it sounds like the Senators are close to a deal that would send both Josh Norris and Jacob Bernard-Docker to the Buffalo Sabres. Dylan Cozens is part of the return coming back to Ottawa. Yeeeeeeeeesh. Bruce Garrioch mentions that both Nashville and Vancouver also had serious interest in Norris.

It’s Trade Deadline Day and the Sens ain’t sellin’.

It’s been a long time since the Ottawa Senators have found themselves in a situation like this. Thanks to another remarkable night on the out of town scoreboard, the Senators wake up on deadline day in a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

But just because the For Sale sign isn’t hanging in the window, doesn’t mean that Steve Staios is a clear buyer either. Sure, he’d love to add a piece to help the team with their playoff push but he’s going to have to get pretty creative to make it happen.

It’s been well-documented but the Senators are in a real salary cap pickle heading into Deadline Day. If Staios is going to add scoring help or a tough forward or depth on the blueline, he’s going to have to work some magic on the salary cap front.

Names like Ryan Donato and Brandon Tanev have both been linked to the Senators and both are very much available in the hours ahead.

At the same time, it’s silly season.

There is something about a deadline that makes GMs collectively lose their mind a little bit so as every Insider will remind you, anything is possible today.

Bruce Garrioch’s most recent article suggested that according to multiple league executives, the Senators are sniffing around on a “bigger deal”. Bigger. Deal. Garrioch has written about both Drake Batherson and Josh Norris in the last 48 hours.

We shall see.

If there are updates to share, and there will be, I’ll add them to the top of the post and in the comment section below.

One thing is for sure – remain buckled at all times.
