Pierre Dorion made an appearance on TSN 1200 this morning and provided an update that we all feared was coming.
Joey Daccord’s season is likely done.
While the team doctors are still waiting for the swelling to go down to know for sure, Dorion said “it’s likely that he’s out for the season”. Just a brutal turn of events for the young goaltender.
Days after the high of his first win in the National Hockey League, his year is done.
Impossible not to feel terrible for the guy. He had a real opportunity to take the ball and run with it a little bit here, and in what was a low pressure situation. It was going to be perfect for his development. And based on the early impressions, it really did seem like Daccord was ready to make the most of his opportunity.
Ottawa’s goaltending situation is going to be pretty touch and go the rest of the way. Matt Murray is considered “week to week” at this point, Marcus Hogberg is improving but likely needs time in Belleville before he’s ready, Filip Gustavsson was supposed to be starting in Belleville this year and Anton Forsberg is a bit of an unknown. The good news is he was on the ice for practice today and is expected to start one of the games in Belleville this weekend.
It wasn’t all bad news though as Dorion covered a range of other topics including the near-NHL ready prospects in North Dakota, the looming opportunity for Logan Brown and the team’s plan for Erik Brannstrom.
