There was only one real goal for the preseason.
Work on systems? Nah. An audition for certain spots in the lineup? Not really. Get into shape before the regular season? Pff I’m in the best shape of my life, damn it.
No injuries.
That was the number one priority for the entirely too long preseason. That went out the window earlier today. Cam Talbot is going to miss the next five to seven weeks with an upper-body injury.
Not a disaster by any stretch but an early setback for a Sens team eager to get off to a better start. If he misses three weeks, that’s the first six games of the regular season. If he’s out the full seven weeks, that’s 18 games.
Hurry back, Cam.
While Anton Forsberg was expected to get first dibs at the number one goalie spot, it was sort of assumed that Talbot would be pushing for playing time. If there’s good news, it’s that the Senators don’t have a back to back until December, which means there is some built in rest there.
In a corresponding move, the Senators claimed goaltending Magnus Hellberg off waivers from the Seattle Kraken. The 31-year old Hellberg started one game with the Detroit Red Wings last season and before that, spent five seasons in the KHL.
The Senators continue the preseason tomorrow against the Montreal Canadiens.
