It certainly didn’t take long for Ottawa’s goaltending depth to be tested.
This morning the club announced that back up Andrew Hammond will miss the next two weeks with a groin injury. That would mean he would be available to return to the line up five or six games into the regular season.
Bad news for Hammond, good news for Matt O’Connor. Well sort of.
Much was made about Matt O’Connor’s desire to develop his game in Binghamton this season but after an early injury to Hammond, the Senators will need him at the NHL level to start. O’Connor has looked extremely comfortable in training camp and the preseason and had there actually been a “battle” for the back up position, he may have actually edged Hammond out for the spot.
The Senators play back to back games twice in the next couple weeks so there’s a good chance Matt O’Connor starts his first NHL game during this stretch.
-Bryan Murray announced this morning that forward Colin Greening has been placed on waivers. If he clears (I know, I know), he will be assigned to Binghamton of the American Hockey League. That leaves 14 forwards left in camp including both Matt Puempel and Shane Prince. A decision is expected on that front following Saturday’s game against Montreal.
