It’s one of the unfortunate realities of having so many good prospects.
With limited roster spots available, it’s not always possible to create enough NHL openings for deserving players. And eventually, when contracts are up, those players start to look elsewhere for opportunities to play.
That’s exactly what happened with the Vitaly Abramov.
This morning, we learned that Abramov has signed a two-year deal with his hometown Traktor team in the KHL.
The now 23-year old Abramov is coming off another solid season in Belleville.
He had 19 points in 23 games with the BSens and often showed flashes of skill that suggested he might be on the verge of an NHL opportunity. And while he did get in a couple games with the big team down the stretch, an extended opportunity never materialized.
A third round pick in the 2016 Entry Draft, Abramov was acquired in the trade that sent Matt Duchene to the Columbus Blue Jackets. And while he has been knocking on the door of s roster spot ever since, he has appeared in just five NHL games over parts of three seasons in the Sens organization.
Abramov is an restricted free agent which means the Senators can still qualify him and retain his NHL rights.
