Even though I have now been counting down the days for the better part of a month, nothing can truly prepare us for that exact moment.
Lottery day. June 26th. Eleven days away.
Each of us has grown used to the feeling of helplessness you get when you care so much about something you have no control over. That’s what being a sports fan is all about. But the lottery is different.
Very different.
Everything comes down to that one moment. It’s not about a game, a series or even a season. It’s about the next decade of Senators hockey defined in the blink of an eye.
Naturally, it will be surrounded by annoying interviews, frequent commercial breaks and a general uncertainty over when it’s actually going to happen but when you really boil it down, it’s the future of the franchise that hangs in the balance. The Ottawa Senators have done everything right during this rebuild. And they even got a little luck on their side as everything went wrong for the San Jose Sharks. They have put themselves in the best position possible.Yet on June 26th, their fate will ultimately be determined by ping pong balls, over-sized novelty envelopes and Bill Daly. And makes me nauseous just to think about it.
