Senators Extend Spence for Four Years (Add Ersson, Burakovsky)

Another item crossed off the ol’ off-season To Do list.

According to friend of the show Bruce Garrioch, the Ottawa Senators reached a deal with restricted free agent defenceman Jordan Spence. It’s a four year deal that will see Spence earn $5 million per season.

Spence’s name has been out there a little bit in terms of trade speculation this off-season but in the end, Staios and company reward Spence for the significant strides in his game over the last season.

Spence stepped up in a big way while other defenceman were out of the lineup and proved that he’s more than capable of taking on a top four role with this team. He also helps to solidify the team’s depth on the right side, which already includes Artem Zub, Nikolas Matinpalo and Carter Yakemchuk.

The team also inked a couple AHL players to new contracts earlier in the day, including Djibril Touré and Samuel Bolduc.

This won’t be the last we hear from Steve Staios on Draft Day but it’s a heck of a start.
