Vermette Sinks Sens in Overtime- Highlights

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

    Pits, Boston, Boston

    So 6 game losing streak?!?

I honestly can’t see us winning any of those games… Although I suppose with the way the season has gone we will win, lose, win.

    • FistsofNeil25

I wouldn’t count them out of any of those games man. They seem to elevate their game against tougher competition. We’ve already beat Boston once this season.

  • SensChirp

This is about the energy level I was expecting in here today.

    Enjoy the holidays, everyone!

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Hahaha, Chirp even you can’t be optimistic about the upcoming week(that being said, we win all three and panic attack city is gone again)

      • SensChirp

They’ll win Monday. I’ll make sure of it.

        • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

          You betting again

          • SensChirp

Desperate times call for bizarre curses!

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

            Thanks for the sacrifice!

            That is dedication

        • Sandy

I certainly hope so Chirp.. I’m going to the game… would sure like to see a win..

  • FistsofNeil25

It’s really unfortunate that the Sens are in the position that they’re in. This isn’t a bad hockey team, they’re just finding ways to lose unfortunately. The Sens were the better team yesterday vs Phoenix but they made a few costly mistakes and that’s been the story of their season. There are still some guys that need to step up and put this team on their back.

Karlsson is trying to do way too much out there and it’s hurting the team. He’s also got some off ice issues that seem to be hurting his play.

Spezza just isn’t committed to doing all the little things that are necessary to win in this league. He has the ability, but I’m starting to wonder if he has the mentality.

Neither goaltender is stepping up to take over the net. Anderson has regressed significantly and although Lehner has a solid save percentage, he’s still prone to letting in soft goals that deflate the team. The way these two are playing, I’m not convinced that either of them are legit starters in this league. So much for having one of the best goaltending tandems in the NHL.

Paul Maclean’s decisions are starting to frustrate this fanbase. Playing Smith and Greening for two shifts in overtime yesterday over Bobby Ryan was ridiculous. I know he was playing the match-up game by putting Smith and Greening out against Phoenix’s top players but for fuck sake, it’s overtime, we were the home team, play to win. Bobby should have been out there. He was a beast on the puck the entire game, and is without a doubt our best forward.

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

He has been arguably our best forward all season, the only other ones I would even consider in the same breath are Macarthur(another new player) and Turris.

I really hope Ryan has found something about the city that he loves and makes him want to stay.

    • Shibal

Despite Karlsson’s numbers – I think Karlsson is too much of a puck hog this year.

      • SenaTHOR

Tries to do it by himself, if he would give and go more to give himself room.

    • Sandy

Exactly what off-ice issues does Karlsson have that is affecting his game?

Everyone is frustrated with this team…. from fans to the players themselves.

Every one of them have to be better… especially between the pipes. How deflating can it be to see those soft goals going in the net against them.

      • FistsofNeil25

        I believe he’s getting a divorce.

        • Sandy

What??? I saw that on another site as well.
I was checking Theresa Karlsson’s twitter. She has gone back to school to finish her education. She has been back in Ottawa.. actually flew in to get her braces off — crazy. She seems to be in contact with the other player’s wives.
They were together and in love in July & August… that would actually be a quick fallout to not be here in Sept if they were getting a divorce..
Could it be as simple as she wanted to finish her education?

          • FistsofNeil25

I don’t know Sandy. I’ve heard a couple rumors about it or about some of his off ice behavior but I have no idea if any of it is true so I’d rather not go into detail about these things. He is for sure getting divorced though. That comes from a very good source.

          • SENSsmile

I’ve also heard stories to that effect about a month ago. It’s sad to say, but it would appear that EK65 may have forgotten at times that he was married. Whether or not that’s true, it’s none of my business but one thing is sure: he misses Alfie, who was a great mentor to him.

          • Sandy

True… but he is only 22 yrs old and chums around with the other single guys as Alfie isn’t here..
I guess we will find out eventually if the rumours are true. It seemed to happen real fast if they were together in Sept…

  • T K

At least Bingo’s winning….It’s not all tragic.
Although a long playoff run would certainly be wonderful, for me, it’s not all about winning. As long as the Sens show an honourable effort, and impress me with some cool plays every once in a while, I’m happy.

My “Must-win” games are only against Toronto and Montreal. For the rest, just play hard.

  • FistsofNeil25

Chirp, there have been some twitter and internet rumors out there the last couple days that say Murray may shake up the roster with a big change if the Sens come out of the roster freeze period still spinning their tires.

Have you heard anything that may indicate that Murray would be willing to shake up the core of this roster? I obviously know that the Sens can’t afford to take on any salary but that doesn’t mean we can’t ship out a core player for the sake of shaking things up.

    • SENSsmile

That would be good news, as long as 19 is part of the package.

  • HarvardYaleAndPrincetonMan

Last night I watched MONEYBALL for the first time.
It’s time to hire Billy Beane as the new GM for this
    cash starved team.

    • Sensturion

Billy Beane has never won the last game of the season. :P

    • Sensnation

Great movie … but do you really want a team of Condras and Greenings? I like them in their role, don’t want to see them 20+mins a game.

  • Sandy

The World Juniors are starting soon. At least Sens fans get a look at 3 prospects in this tournament. Lazar (Cda), Quentin Short (USA), Hogberg (Swe).
Sweden is dominating Canada today 3-0 in pre-tournament game. Hodberg in net…

    • FistsofNeil25

Yeah I’m watching as well. Canada has looked brutal today. Similar to our world junior team the last few years, they’ve played some pretty undisciplined hockey today.

I’m not sure Canada can compete with teams like Sweden on the big ice surface.

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Murray must be busy this holiday season. I would be absolutely floored if Spezza was moved, mainly due to him being awarded captaincy.

But who knows, desperate times call for desperate measures…. Maybe in an attempt to draw Ryan to stay he is given an A, and Karlsson given the C seeing as he seems to be coming back into form?!? Or vice versa it.

The NTC makes even speculating on a Spezza deal almost impossible as most teams I would want to deal with I can’t imagine Spezza would waive to go to.

    • FistsofNeil25

I don’t think now would be the time for a Spezza trade. I think they’re going to give him a full season as captain before they consider moving on from him. If Spezz fails to evolve his game I can see both the organization and Spezza deciding that a trade would be best for both sides.

I’m not in the trade Spezza camp, but I don’t think trading him would be the end of the world. I also don’t think he would be opposed to a change of scenery. I doubt he has much interest in resigning here with the way Melnyk is running this organization.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Agree completely, I am not one that tries to run him out of town…. But realistically he is the only one I see getting us a lot of attention and a possible bidding war.

I consider Karlsson and Ryan(God I hope he stays) untouchables

    • Sensnation

Desperate times? If you’re thinking short term and only this season sure, but Murray’s rebuild is doing well regardless of this season’s results.

Karlsson getting the C would be a HUGE mistake! He is too young, too inconsistent and not mature enough. Give him an A for life, but I hope we never see him as captain

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

That’s what most people said about Spezza

        • Sensnation

Spezza just got the C. No one would have suggested giving it to him when he was just a few years into the league, but his mental persona and personality lend towards captaincy a lot more than Karlssons.

Spezza is consistent, still dropping passes to unskilled linemates just like the old days ;)

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I disagree…. Personally I see Karlsson as more of a leader than Spezza… And the league is moving towards younger captains (agree with it or not… It is happening more often now)

          • Sensnation

Some younger captains work, a lot don’t. If you look at the list of captains across the league there are very very FEW of them that are young.

The only ones that are Captains were drafted with that purpose in mind. Not every superstar is a Toews or Landeskog caliber, and both of those were drafted for their leadership qualities along with their on ice abilities.

I would not put Karlsson in that league. At best he’s the same as Spezza in terms of he may be a good captain one day, but later his career and I personally don’t see it on a winning team.

          • Jacques

Karlsson or TUrris would make good captains! guys who BUST their asses at both ends of the ICE!

  • hq8

vermette sinks the senators…….more like the sens sink themselves and give credit to the opposition.
they better not trade spezza though. he will make the mistakes, but he also drives the offense. they just need to stop messing with his wingers and give him bigger faster guys to play with. too bad zibanejad got injured, if he is back next game they should waste no time stapling him next to spezza with michalek. also, need to start giving Lehner the starts more.

    just so frustrating.

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Just read that Anderson gers the start Monday… They HAVE to be showcasing him

      • FistsofNeil25

To be honest though Lehner hasn’t been any better in his recent starts. Neither one of them has really looked good the last few weeks.

        • Sensnation

Anderson let in a lot of softies, whereas most of Lehner’s goals have been quality scoring opportunities. It’s perplexing they are continuing this Anderson charade, he is getting better, but still is not the better of the 2.

          • SENSsmile

Also, Lehner makes the clutch saves. Anderson does not.

      • Sandy

That’s a recipe for disaster…. I’m going to the game.. could be a looooong one.

Anderson has not been playing well at all. Are they playing him hoping he gets better?

That goal in OT yesterday was so stoppable…

    • Sandy

Where were you guys last night.. I could have used extra support

      • hq8

yea saw that. most of the people who want to trade spezza have a very weak rhetorical argument which completely negates the fact that in terms of production from life-time senators, even alfie pales in comparison to spezza.
we are not losing games because of spezza – except the last one where he shoulda cleared that puck!

    • runningbear1974

I think we should do as we’re doing… We’re a development team… Not sure of our identity yet… Put the old guys in tough situations and see what they’re made of… Protect the young guys… Give them easy minutes, let them develop properly…
If we realize we can’t trust our veterans in the last minute of the game, then we get rid of them… A veteran should be dependable and consistent… If they can’t do that get rid of them…We need to figure out who should be on the team…

      • SENSsmile

e.g. no. 19. Is Spezza dependable in the last minute of a game? Is he consistent? No, to both questions. Therefore…

  • hq8

just saw replay of the 2nd (or 1st) goal from last night – the wrap around one, and it was nice to see that it all started because of a huge hit Gryba laid on Vrbata right by the sens net. dumped him well enough to make him go for a change which basically left PHX shorthanded on that rush – 4 – on – 3 which allowed michalek all sorts of room to make the pass to methot who pinched also due to lack of coverage. thats why Gryba needs to play more, doesnt play timid when it comes to destroying people around the sens net.

    • Jacques

Then Gryba makes the stretch pass to Smith for the second goal! I want answers why hasn’t he been playing!

      • SenaTHOR

Good luck getting them…basically its big contracts already in place.

    • CUP 2014-15

Agreed, if we play Gryba, MM, CP and JC, that’s a lot of weight and they clear the net. it makes us a tough team to play against. He was driving Virbata nuts all game. I was pushing for him to play for about 3 weeks now and if they let him play for 5,6 or even 8 or 9 straight like they have with the others, we will see him get better by the game. He sure looked good with MM and interesting to see MM’s game seeing that he didn’t need to cover for the more offensive EK or PW

      • SenaTHOR

“need to cover for more offensive EK or PW” or defensively irresponsible may be a better selection of words

  • Sandy

Could this be the main reason we are struggling this season?

Panzeri: #Sens Craig Anderson is 46 of 47 goalies in GAA and 40th of 47 in save percentage.

    ———-
    Andy’s GAA is 3.42 and save % is .897..
Lehner sit 23rd with 2.54 GAA and 8th in save % at .926…

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Could be… Because they keep going with arguably one of the worst Goalies in The league statistically.

Don’t always agree on everything here but I think we agree that this makes absolutely no sense

  • runningbear1974

Make Bobby Ryan the captain… He’s the style i want the rest of the guys to play like… Play like Bobby….

    • SenaTHOR

With Methot and McArthur as A’s

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Brennon saying zibby should be good to go for Monday!

  • Jacques

Ottawa has been talking to the 2 Alberta teams.

    • runningbear1974

Phillips could use a new town to expand his restaurant business !!!

      • Jacques

        Haha

  • SenaTHOR

Spezza Michalyk Karlsson 30% of cap

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

There had to be no chance of us resigning Michalek.

Unless he is willing to play for something like MacArthur than good riddance

      • runningbear1974

Michalek has been playing really well lately… If he would sign the MacArthur contract, i’d do it for sure…

        • SenaTHOR

          The minus 21 is horrible.

          • Jacques

            It’s only 3 converted touchdowns!

        • peetypuck

Can he put up MacArthur-like numbers?

          • runningbear1974

I believe MacArthur was paid for 20 goals, and for his experience…

  • Jacques

Reading the Fourth Period , says the Kings need a lveteran left winger who can pla top 6 and a veteran D-man! I think we might be able to accommodate them!

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Not sure who I’d want that they would be willing to move tho…. Toffoli jumps out, but not sure they move him

      • Jacques

Yeah no kidding but it says they have a bevy of forward depth.

    • iKarly65

Michalek and Phillips would be ideal for them, as they are both UFAs. MM also spent a large portion of his career in SJ, so he knows the Western teams.

If this becomes a possibility, I hope they pull a deal off.

  • Hax

Looks like lots of Sens fans have their heads in the oven. Merry Christmas.

    LOL

Hopefully after the holidays everyone sort of relaxes a bit.

  • hq8

anderson: 4-4-1 against the penguins 0.919SV%
lehner: has never played against them – career stats show 7 shots faced and 7 saved most likely filling in for anderson.
i will say it again, my biggest gripe is with sens management and coaching. it started with teh Zibanejad crap-shoot and its still continuing with niggling bad lineup choices: e.g. sitting Gryba even though he showed last game that he can more than just plug a spot – two major plays two goals for, Lehner obviously much better than Anderson in ALL situations – but no, a team and the fans are stuck with the brass making a choice to play Andy more.

    • Conor_smythe

All situations… except for winning games

  • sben

personally what I think the sens should do after the roster freeze ends is if the team has not picked it up by that time then greening, condra, gryba/weircioch/ borwiecki, and conacher should all be on the chopping block.

Also a trade idea. If Edmonton would be willing to do it which I think they might as they don’t have enough centers and they don’t want Yakupov anymore is:

    Yakupov + 5th for zibanejad

Or you can take out the 5th rounder if it isn’t realistic for Edmonton to take. People here like Zibanejad but I don’t see it. We have too many centers and this would give pageau a chance to get up there plus we get a good winger for spezza. You guys probably will try to rip me on this one but I like it. Also I think the commenters on this blog have a prejudice against russians for good reason as we haven’t had good experience with them in the past but we can still give Yak a try. The comment section will explode.

    • Shibal

At this point, it looks like Zibanejad is playing better as a winger than Yakupov is. Also Yakupov is defensively horrible, he even went public on how he does not like committing to playing a 2 way game.

      • LeafsSux

I say NO on Yakupov!!! Zbad is a much more rounded player period!

    • runningbear1974

Zibanejad could be with us for the next 20 years… You don’t see it… Seriously… You should be able to see it… I’m kinda stunned…

  • sben

    bruce garrioch tweet:

Pitt GM Ray Shero and coach Dan Bylsma huddled in the corner watching Ottawa skate. #Sens

Are they looking at the sens skate to try to figure out plays for tonight or a trade scenario or whatever. If it was to figure out plays for tonight why is shero there? Interesting.

  • runningbear1974

Oh yeah… Maybe we should keep Methot and Gryba together… They played well last year… This allows Methot to skate in and show some moves… He’s got game…

  • Sensturion

If Ottawa does get Del Zotto, who does NY get?

    • Deadly

      Zack
