Sens Survive Scare vs. Buffalo- Highlights

  • not HIS wingman

I just found out that Stuntman Stu(pid) got to go Sochi to work at the Olympics.
GAWD – the local media had better not be complaining about budget problems for the next 10 years

    • Alan Burns

What does that have to do with the Sens budget? He did the Announcing for women’s hockey in Vancouver too.

    • 4thStringGoalie

I don’t understand the point of this. If he is an employee of the Olympics to work the PA for the women’s game then I’m sure the Russian Olympic committee is picking up his travel costs.

    • T K

I’m sorry but have you ever had a real job or ventured out into the universe? Why in the world would the Sens, the radio station or any other employer send a member of their staff to work for another employer with no benefit to themselves?

A person is entitled to freelance and take on contract work for their own personal amusement or benefit.

Doing a bit of research before you condemn someone is usually a good idea.

P.S.: Stu may be a little silly sometimes but if you ever actually spent some time with him, you’d know he’s actually a decent person.

  • MethotToMyMadness

    Hey Lads

Caught the 1st and 2nd period upstairs, loved the Karlsson laser, and the tweets that followed about #RIPWaterBottle, Classic! But Da Costa deserves more attention for his work keeping the puck in the zone and making that pass to EK. SDC is making a name for himself and using his time wisely.

But after making some noise throughout, which the Wife thought would wake up the kids, I decided to bunker down in the basement for the final 20. In doing so, I made the fatal mistake of laying down on my narcolepsy machine again just before puck drop. Why I do this to myself I don’t know? It’s not that the Sens action isn’t good, I just can’t resist the temptation of this F’ing couch.

I missed Spezza’s pass to Michalek only 10 seconds in which put the Sens up 2-0, that’s how bad (or should I say good) this couch is. When I came back to life, the game was 2-1 for the Sens. I had just missed the goal from Ennis. Two goals missed, then out I went again only to wake up and it’s now tied 2-2. I have to admit, I was pissed but I was so sleepy. I woke up just as the game ended, to find out Spezza fed Michalek again for the winner. So I missed all 4 goals in the 3rd!

My analysis of this game is only good through 40, and we didn’t play the same way we played against the Pens or Blues, but we did stay above Buffalo. As for the 3rd, it sucks we blew the lead, but I’m happy Spezza has continued producing when it matters.

One thing I’m really liking is the top 4 D were our biggest minute makers on the ice. This really shows how much PMac is rolling them and how much he’s trusting them.

    • The Apostle

We let Buffalo hang around and it could have cost us. Buffalo should have been dead and buried long before they climbed back into it. Exciting finish and all that, but I thought it was a terrible game.

Agree that da Costa looked good, I’m pon the verge of changing my mind about him but I still think his long term future will be with some other NHL team.

I’m still astonished by how many basic mistakes we make in our own end and the difficulty we have clearing the puck but we were mostly steady on the blueline.

Finally I would like to pay my respects to the two Spezza haters who were sat behind me last night, I particularly liked the analysis of the final goal which included the line “lucky bounce to get it to Milo”. Like many of you I have my favourite players and those I dislike, and like many of you I find Spezza a frustratuion a lot of the time, but I like to think that, at the very least, I watch the game without blinkers.

    • boom

I agree that the top 4 D are looking solid right now (as compared to the beginning of the year), but it begs the question – where does Phillips slot in when he is healthy enough to return?

The logical answer is to put him right back with Ceci in the bottom pairing. Given that Ceci’s time on ice gas been reduced drastically while Phillips has been out, we’ll probably see this pairing get more ice time (than Wiercioch-Ceci) and see the other two pairings ice time slightly reduced.

Having said all that, do the Sens still need to look for a top 4 D in a trade? And if so, how do you slot/pair them?

      • FistsofNeil25

Maybe Phillips will slot in on another team’s roster by the trade deadline? Probably not though. He should be the #7 defenseman even when he’s healthy enough to play. The group we have has been getting the job done. When Phillips is in the line-up he just contributes to more defensive breakdowns, more bobbled pucks, more turnovers, and less breakout passes.

      • Zelle

I think Ceci seeing less ice time is probably to reduce Wiercioch’s ice time. I like Wier but he does make mistakes and gets battled off the puck a little too easily still.

        • FistsofNeil25

So does Cowen but he gets to play 20+ minutes a night riding shot gun with Karlsson.

          • Zelle

I’m not a Cowen fan but they probably expect something more out of him than Wiercioch.

          • FistsofNeil25

What they expect and what he is delivering likely aren’t the same thing. He’s got a lot of work to do.

  • Hax

As good as Spezza and Michalek looked last night, Zibanejad looked even better IMO. Kid was all over the ice. He’s gonna be a stud.

    • Doc

For a 20 year old, he already is in my book.

My fav player to watch with a name that doesn’t end in ‘sson’.

      • The Apostle

        Zibanejadsson

        • Zelle

          Turrisson

          • The Apostle

            Claessonsson

          • bluebuyyoo

            Kassassinationsson!

          • The Apostle

            winner winner chicken dinner

      • Doc

        Well that escalated quickly.

    • sens23

spezza and zibanejad need to remain together until one of them is no longer on the team. i think zibanejads outside speed down the wing opens up room for spezza. dmen have to respect that if spezza is coming down the middle he can chip it wide and have zibanejad take it to the net with speed
michalek is also starting to come around

    • FistsofNeil25

DJ Zbad, Karlsson and Turris are easily my three favorite skaters on the team. I’ve been a huge fan of his since last season. He was a huge part of the reason why we were able to make the playoffs with so many injuries throughout our line-up.

I think Zibanejad is a much better center than he is a winger. He’s done well on the wing but I think his game is better suited for the center ice position. He looks more comfortable at center where he’s able to play his game the way he wants to. He’s a 200 foot player who’s relentless on the back-check and a machine through the neutral zone. I see him more as a driving force to his own line than being a complementary player with Spezza and Michalek.

Either way, his future is a bright one.

      • CUP 2014-15

        Bang on!!!!!

      • A-Train

Zibanejad’s my favourite non-Karlsson Sen too. Still think he looks more confident as a centre though. Feel like there were a few times last night where he passed up a chance to shoot.

  • FistsofNeil25

I hate to be negative after another win but I’m really starting to wonder why this team is prone to so many defensive breakdowns. Is it a problem with our defensive system or is it the players not playing within the system? Either way, we’ve seen these defensive breakdowns all season long and they have cost us a significant amount of points in the standings. I’ve been waiting for these issues to be fixed since the start of the season and they just keep re-occurring game in and game out. Our team defense is pretty bad.

    • boom

I think the main reason is their insistence on making that extra pass on the way out of the zone. They absolutely refuse to make the safe play off the boards, and always come through the middle of the ice, ala Detroit.

It works when you have skill players like Detroit has had over the years, but it falls apart when the guys doing it don’t have the requisite skill.

I like MacLeans up-temp, puck possesion style, but sometimes the safe play is the right play.

  • Inquiring Mind

“Fredrik Claesson stealing the show during intermission”
SC – what did you mean by this ?

    • The Apostle

During the intermissions they interviewed some of the Bingo players (Kramer, Prince, Wideman and Claesson). Claesson pulled out a Hello Canada!!!!!!!!! rock and roll greeting.

      • Inquiring Mind

        LOVE IT – thanks

  • CUP 2014-15

Big 2 points again. We all got what was expected last night. Buff tired after playing the night before and getting bombed by Pitt. Ottawa came home off a tough road trip. Fordsville on Sat, Pitt on Mon St.L on Tues. That was a tough 3pts. I don’t think they had much left in the tank. Those 3 games in 4 nights were tough hard fought and physical battles. They got the win and that makes this a good day. Spezz has jumped into the race with booth feet and the timing is great. He and Milo are finding each other out there and if the team can add another winger for Spezz, then ZBad can return to dominating all other third line centers in the league and allow ZS to do the same to 4th liners. I hope SDC can play the wing with CC for MZ. The D is working itself out and loving the MM, EG pairing 5 on 5 but they have been nothing short of outstanding on the PK. No worries between the pipes, I am just not sure who the number one is, and that’s a good thing if your winning.
I think it may have been Sandy that posted the ten games to finish leading up to the break and it was a tough do or die sched. well…………5-2-2 wth Beantown tomorrow. that’s 8 out of 10 on the road with play-off type teams. the one “gift” would be buff last night. Wash, TBay, car, Col, TBay, T.O. Pitt, St L. Buff and Bost.

    • Zelle

If Zbad gets his own line again and DaCosta stays, what would your lines look like?

      • CUP 2014-15

        CMac Turris Ryan
        (trade/Stone) Spezz Milo
        SDC ZBad CC
        CG ZS CN
Basically by bringing in a top 6, he plays that role with Spezz. CC89 is reunited with ZBad and SDC gets ZBad in place of Condra. The tough part for SDC is he needs to give way to ZBad and move to the wing.

  • Jason

Everyone is praising Spezza so much but I still am not happy with his play. Did he make 2 really great passes that resulted in goals? Yea, he did. Did he try to force a pass at the blue line and turn it over and then look like a pylon trying to play defense and the Sabres scored a goal? Yup, that happened too. He just makes too many turnovers and is lazy on defense, I will never like him unless he becomes a 2 way player.

    • A-Train

That’s a recipe for sadness, bro. Check out his comment after the game:

“I am what I am as I player, I think I’ve gotten better at certain aspects of the game,” Spezza says. “At times this year, I think I’ve tried to be too much of somebody that I wasn’t and it affected my game so, I have to play my game.” – See more at: http://www.senatorsextra.com/main/scanlan-sabres-come-to-senators-emotional-rescue#sthash.jN1n08dH.dpuf

      • Alcatraz

and I wouldn’t be surprised if he went further and said I spoke with Coach maclean a while back and we realized I’m at my best when I let things come naturally to me
I mean look at how bad Ovechkin was when Hunter tried to make him a 2 way player

    • Alcatraz

This is fucking brutal to read as a sens fan. Just take Spezza for what he is.

Christ not every 1st line Centre is Patrice Bergeron. Go look at Patrick Kane, Ryan Getzlaf, RNH, list goes on and on

Watch 82 games of Eric Staal, or 82 games Tavares and I can assure you, you will see that not everyone is a 2 way stud. Spezza is one of the best offensively minded players in the league. He is great on the draws.

He has elevated his game the last few weeks, and we would not have just secured 5 of 6 points this week without him

      • bluebuyyoo

        Amen!

      • CohMa

        Doesn’t Patrick Kane play wing?

        • Millennium

I think the comparison was superstars who don’t backcheck

    • The Apostle

I know what you mean, I’m never going to like my neighbours dog unless it becomes a cat.

      • bluebuyyoo

Cats are definitely better back-checkers. Dogs are lazy bastards.

        • The Apostle

Dogs are better in a defined system to be fair.

      • Hax

        Wisers clap to this comment.

    • MrSkullhead

You might as well condemn Karlsson while you’re at it.

      • Jason

No because when Karlsson makes a mistake he gives 100% to get back into the play and fix his mistake. Spezza will just skate lazily back or go for a line change. My dislike for him is more about effort than being a good defensive player.

        • MrSkullhead

Yeah, that’s it. Jason is lazier than Karlsson; not slower with a bad back. “Lazy” players don’t last in the NHL.

        • Sensnation

Fans like you confound the shit out of me, you can see Spezza’s mistakes and only his mistakes, yet you make believe Karlsson isn’t the exact same type of player! Cowen would not get shit on half as much as he does if Karlsson wasn’t a floater on d sometimes.

        • Hax

I agree to a point, but it’s not laziness. It’s just Karlsson is waaaay faster than Spezza and less inclined to let something go if someone beats him. That’s not a knock on Spezza, it’s just praise for Karlsson.

As pointed out, you’re just never going to like Spezza very much and that’s fine.

        • Engin Sezerman

I find it insulting how fans have the gull to call any NHLer lazy. If NHLers were lazy they wouldn’t be playing in the NHL.
I’m starting thinking of three things in regards to Jason Spezza hate:
          1) Fans have never ever liked him every since he was drafted 2nd overall in 2001 draft.
          2) Fans are jealous that he is making lots of money, has a good looking wife.
          3) Those people are mad that mommy and daddy crushed their dreams about playing in the NHL and that they working a job they really hate so they make a living.

    • CUP 2014-15

then your never going to like him.

    • Sensnation

I think he’s ok with you not liking him because in his 30s he’s not going to become a different player. Get over yourself and stop expecting players to play to your expectations and learn to like a player for what he is.

    • Doc

This is what you sound like right now:

    • Simple Jack

he just needs 2 strong wingers and he’ll be fine. i also think he’s trying to do too much.

    • runningbear1974

I think it’s hard on this blog to have an opinion that is negative towards Spezza…
He has strong and weak points…
Some people think the strong points are so strong that they are greater than his weak points…
Some people think that when the going gets tough the opposition will be able to shutdown his strong points, and take advantage of his weak points…
My belief, is against a strong team like Boston, Pittsburgh, Chicago, they’ll easily shut down Spezza, and score when he’s on the ice… That’s my belief… Especially in a playoff series where the ref will let the other team get away with stuff…
People also take offense to calling him lazy… I agree with that, that’s hard to prove… But, what can be said, is that he’s incapable of learning the 2-way game, he says he tried and it hurt his game… So, can’t say he’s lazy, but can say he can’t adapt… He’ll do what he does, whether it’s successful or not…
In my mind, anyone that only sees the good or the bad is irrational and not worth talking to… He has good and bad points that can be discussed rationally…

Born with a congenital heart condition I think. Hole in the heart’s wall or something like that.

  • Sharmarke

The sabres sure dont make it easy on anyone.

  • CUP 2014-15

LOL, all forwards at practice and ZBad is between CC89 and Ryan

    • Millennium

With Spezza seemingly finding his game again and Ryan in a slump, I’d like to see that pair revisited at some point. Worth a shot at least.

    • FistsofNeil25

I like that line but who’s moved over to the wing? Smith or Da Costa?

      • Millennium

SDC isn’t skating, but its worth pointing out these lines seem to be changing throughout practice.

          • CUP 2014-15

If you were to guess, what do you think…is he going

          • Millennium

My guess is no. If Michalek is really gone after this season and if they can get rid of Greening, there is room for SDC and Stone on the roster

          • FistsofNeil25

Sure there’s room for them but subtracting Michalek and Greening for Stone and da Costa doesn’t make us a better team. We need an upgrade over the guys we’re going to lose.

It’s time to add some solid vets to this team. We need more experienced players if we’re going to take the next step and become a better team.

          • Millennium

I’d argue that either of those guys is a straight upgrade over Greening at this stage.

But your point is fair. I believe there would still be an empty wing position though? Or am I missing someone other than Kassian?

            Mac Turris Ryan

            Stone Spezza Zib

            Conacher SDC Condra

            ???? Smith Neil

Move Conacher down to 4th line, Stone to 3rd line, and get a real top 6 winger from UFA or trade. (not impying Stone isn’t top 6 material, just meant established)

          • FistsofNeil25

I would agree that Da Costa and Stone are upgrades over Greening. I’m not a Greening fan what so ever but he’s the type of player that will earn his money in the playoffs and not in the regular season.

I just want to see the Sens become a contender sooner rather than later and Da Costa and Stone aren’t going to bring us closer to that goal. We need experience, size and speed on the roster. We need players that are hard to play against. We need smart defensive hockey players.

          • Millennium

I agree with you on that. Our organization is in a strange spot because we have so many young guys who deserve a taste but probably aren’t gamebreakers at this point.

Its the kind of situation that can let us go out and land a superstar winger with term and decent $ who lets us compete in the next 2 years. I’d be all for that.

  • Sensnation

There’s nothing like toying with a Buffalo team for 2 periods, then forgetting they are actual nhl players and know how to score as well. Glad the boys kept it together long enough to get the win in regulation.

Our young defense has been really impressive in Phillips’ absence. I really have no clue who you would take out right now.

Tim Murray needs a C. Da Costa is definitely an NHL quality C. There’s gotta be a move we can make there!

    GO SENS GO!!!

  • esk

if spezza and m9 can keep this up than Murray NEEDS to make a major move to solidify our holes. #stanleycupdreams !!

  • ProudSens

Tick Tock Murray, just a little over 2.5 hours left. Is it someone like Ott, Moulson or somebody totally off the board? I got pre xmas jitters and I think I will be disapointed.

Wouldn’t believe it from his play!

  • SenaTHOR

I think every team had “mistake” contracts. Who do you think is overpaid/underpaid.

  • Tcharger

I doubt we will see anything today….who knows though. Would be nice to get some time to gel over the break, but not sure our budget will help pay someone over the break.

CAN’T DO IT ANYMORE!!!!! What the hell is with T.Y. I go to take a look at his blog and again it’s about the team’s money issues!!!! Were on a good run and 2.5. hrs to a freeze, good things happening with the team and he needs to print this crap yet again. I will do the only think I can and move from his continuing crap to another blogger. They will all be second to S.C. anyway.

    • Millennium

Controversy breeds views/traffic/whatever metric is desired as a blogger. When everything is hunky dory, that’s bad for business.

I don’t like it, its just how the world is sadly. Same with news agencys.

      • CUP 2014-15

well he just fired one more ping at the metrics for sensh… or whom ever, I am done with his never ending negativity. I am starting to think he is N.K.

        • SenaTHOR

First of all TY is an attention seeker and he gets attention any way he can, posts on all the boards and twitter. He has no real hockey background and uses extrinsic concepts to make himself look smart(metrics and finances). If you get pissed at him he has got your attention. Should just take him for what he is..a loser in his mothers basement(profile) with a keyboard who has gets his stroke by creating controversy.
Anybody who solely watches numbers to decide if a player is any good is pathetic.

          • Sensnation

I’d be amazed if he watches half the sens games in a season. He’s definitely not a fan and thinks he’s doing journalism. Pretty sad all around.

          • Millennium

I’ve followed Yost for a while on Twitter (which I generally check in real time during games) and he definately watches the games in real time.

As for his classification as a fan, I don’t really think that’s as easily answered as you suggest. Undoubedtly this is also work for him, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be a fan as well. He clearly likes quite a few of our players, and chirps some others, but really how different is that from any regular fan.

    • FBP

His current blog isn’t about money issues.

  • Matthew Laurence

Any one know what Karlsson said about the Olympic tribute that got broadcasted after the game? Apparently he was pretty pissed.

    • Hax

He was upset it happened as fans were leaving. Wasn’t sure why they did that or who’s decision it was. I tend to agree – it should have been a bit bigger deal and anyone who’s been to CTC knows that 90% of people are leaving or have already left as the final whistle goes.

      https://twitter.com/HockeyScanner

      Scanner’s timeline has some details.

      • Zelle

I wanted to stay to watch it but I didn’t want to miss my bus. It gets filled quick and only stays for 10-15mins after the game is over. I wish they would have done it before the game started.

        • Hax

Yeah. The Org is usually pretty good about tributes and stuff so a bit surprised here. I wouldn’t be surprised if they make up for it (or try to) at the first home game post-Sochi. Some sort of “congrats to our returning Olympians” or something.

      • SENSsmile

Karlsson needs to be humble in these types of situations. If he indeed went on a rant off the record, that wasn’t necessary. Everyone knows he’s going to Sochi, everyone knows he’s a big star. He doesn’t need to beg for praise and attention… JMHO.

        • Hax

Not sure if he was begging for praise or if he had something pulled out of him by leading questions. But yeah this sort of thing is why I’m ok with Karlsson not wearing a letter just yet. He’s still got some maturing to do (which is not a bad thing – it’s totally expected).

      • sprucesens

I would doubt he cares about praise like someone said below. I’m sure its more of a, this is a big deal, and people should be supporting their athletes big time, not just a little blurb at the end of a hockey game. It’s not just hockey players going. there are a ton of actual amateur athletes that work hard for 4 years and more to get here, and he was maybe expecting it to be a bit bigger of a deal than that.

    • Millennium

“I don’t like it after the game. I don’t know who decided that. It’s a little bit sad.”

And apparently he said worse off the record.

    • Sandy

I questioned why they had it after the game as well.

Whoever decided to do that must know the arena is 3/4′s empty at the end of the game… Should have done it before…

  • Millennium

“Dacosta has been sent to Binghamton. He wasn’t going to be playing in Boston”

    Lame.

    • Hax

      Source?

      • Millennium

Brennan on Twitter. plus a couple other guys too

        • Hax

Okay. I believe “a couple of other guys” before Brennan though LOL.

          I’m guessing it’s from MacLean’s presser.

          • Millennium

Lol yeah he was just the first I saw. Steve Loyd and Brent Wallace also reporting it.

    • Zelle

      Awe that is disappointing…

      • Hax

Not at all. They needed to move him now so he could play during the Olympic break. I’d expect he gets recalled after the Olympics.

        • Millennium

Worth pointing out that if they hadn’t sent him down, being on the roster throughout the Olympics would put him over the 30 day limit and he would need to clear waivers to be sent down I think.

Interestingly, Wallace says “No guarantee he returns to Ottawa once the Olympic break is done.”

          • Hax

Good point. And yeah if he stinks down there and Puempel (or someone else) is lighting it up then Da Costa may stay down. But that would have happened anyway if someone else deserved a shot.

          • runningbear1974

feels like we can almost guarantee he’ll be back… He has worked hard… Has done everything asked of him… He’ll be back…

        • Doc

          Bingo. That’s the only reason.

          • SENSsmile

I see what you did there :-)

          • SenaTHOR

I hope its not for a cheap bus ride back!

        • Zelle

Ooh ok I see. I’m ok with the move then :)

    • Alcatraz

If he plays against Boston it means he cannot play during the olympic break whis is not ideal

    • Simple Jack

better for him to play during the break than to sit. kassian will play vs boston.

  • Hax

Not reading too much into the mix up of lines. MacLean likes to tinker that way.

Though was thinking that maybe (assuming Zibanejad is okay playing LW) that maybe 93-19-6 is due for a spin. Zibanejad can help make up for the other two being less-than-quick and they’d be amazing in the offensive zone.

    • Sensnation

I don’t get why we’re mixing lines up now that Zibanejad, Michalek and Spezza clicked. They’ve worked all season to find this pairing, at least run with it for a few weeks.

      • Millennium

Wallace: MacLean says we shouldn’t read to much into today’s line combo’s “just having some fun”

        • Sensnation

Great to hear! Thanks Millennium. Glad they are having a little fun, as long as they remember to get serious in time for Boston!

        • s3nsfan

          what were today’s line combos?

          • Millennium

            Kassian Smith Neil.
            Conacher Zibanejad Ryan.
            Michalek Spezza Greening.
            MacArthur Turris Condra

  • Mitchell

I would of hoped they sent Ceci down. But then again maybe his better not to play during the Olympics?

    • Millennium

I think he’s played too many games, and would have to clear waivers to be sent down.

      • Mitchell

Oh in that case it’s best his here haha

      • Shibal

That’s not true because Cowen was waiver exempt until the middle of this season, and he already has a full season under his belt.

        • Millennium

You might be right, I’m never super clear on waivers, however the rules for the Olympic break are not the same as usual situations. Its a specially defined set of regulations in terms of who is on break and who isn’t (ie who can be sent down and who can’t)

    • Sensnation

Ceci is here for the rest of the NHL season, wouldn’t make sense to send him down for extra games. Rookies already lose steam towards the end of a season, and add a hopeful playoff run to that, he’s going to be playing plenty this season.

Players are human beings too, not just cattle ;)

  • Tony

Buffulo has put recently acquired LW/RW Linus Omark on waivers this afternoon…
Looking purely at his potential and cost of acquiring him (nothing)… he might be worth a look for our 2/3rd line LW hole.

  • Cicero

It’s been a Jekyll and Hyde season so far.

Including the trouncing of the Pens on Dec. 23, the Sens’ record over the past twenty-game stretch has been 11-4-5. Over a full season, this level of play would promise the Sens not just a playoff spot — the Division too and also a run at the Conference title. Not bad I say! And I don’t think this stretch has been a fluke. It’s been the result of hard work and persistence in adapting to structure, combined with young players beginning to actualize their potential.

I think this could explain any caution exhibited by GM Murray insofar as deals are concerned. We’re hardly a broken team — we’re young, improving, and rich with even more young talent in off-roster prospects.

The most convincing argument for a deal imo lies in the need to make room for up-and-coming talent. But is the need great at present? Perhaps not. As the urgency grows next year, the time will come to deal.

Meanwhile, wouldn’t it be best to stand pat and allow the young players to continue to actualize their potential as NHL-level players?

    • Sens-fan-in-mtl

      post of the day?

  • karlssens

Should we be concerned with karlsson’s absence?

    • Alcatraz

      no

    • s3nsfan

      which absence?

    • Hax

      Nah.

  • Aaron 2.0

Da Costa back to Binghamton before the game against Boston? [Eyebrow raise]. I don’t get this unless it was necessity somehow due to being an emergency call-up?

    • Millennium

If they don’t send him down, he can’t play in the AHL during the break.

      • Aaron 2.0

It had to be before the Boston game?

        • Sensnation

There’s a rule regarding the Olympics. Posted it the other day, but pretty much if they play the last game before the Olympics and x many before that, they can’t be sent down even if they have a 2way. It’s to allow players who deserve the break to actually get one.

          NHLPA request obviously.

The only loophole is a Da Costa who hasn’t been around all season and can be sent down the game before the last game prior to Olympics.

          • Aaron 2.0

Thanks, it’s starting to make sense now.

        • Hax

I think it’s a combination of the Olympic break rule (making DaCosta eligible to be sent down) and the roster freeze at 3pm today (meaning he had to go down today, not after Saturday’s game).

  • Inquiring Mind

Was that Chara I just saw carrying the Slovakian flag in the Olympic parade ?
If yes – can’t see how’ll get to Boston in time for tomorrow’s game.

    • Kohlmanator

Yes it was him, Boston let him go a few days ago. He’s not playing Saturday.

    • FBP

I’m pretty sure that was his twin brother, Slovakian figure skater Xdeno Chara.

    • s3nsfan

Boston allowed him to skip the last two games before the break to carry the flag for his country

  • FBP

This has been the worst fake trade deadline so far ever.

    • Sensnation

Still hoping for a last minute deal with Buffalo where we send Tim some prospects he likes for a veteran (or Hodgson) and 1st round pick.

      • FistsofNeil25

I’m really not that interested in a rental though. Are you? I would love to see Murray pull the trigger on a deal for a veteran player, but one that could be a part of the plan here for a few seasons, not just the remainder of this season and a hopeful playoff appearance.

We’re not good enough this season for a rental to be a difference in winning or losing in the playoffs, so why give up quality assets for a guy that will only be here for a couple months.

Murray should be targeting a veteran winger and/or a veteran defenseman who will be a part of the team going forward. We need to add some playoff experience to this roster.

        • Hax

Agree we should be looking further ahead than just this year. If it’s a UFA where we’ve already determined we can resign him that’s different. I think most teams are giving other GMs permission to talk to their pending UFAs first.

And I’m not really worried about not having a first round pick in a weak draft. Would be nice to add one or a second rounder and maybe that’s where Tim comes in. They have lots of picks and there’s got to me one guy Tim was higher on that Pierre and Randy were.

          • FistsofNeil25

When I take a look at some of the impending UFA’s that I’ve seen on the trade market this year, I’m really not keen on adding any of them even if we can extend them beyond this season.

Moulson is a fine goal scorer, but he’s not the best skater and he’s not a “200 footer” which I believe we need more of. The cost of acquiring him and then resigning him is way too rich for me. Same goes for Cammalleri.

It’s rumored Hemsky could be had for cheap and I don’t think he will command big bucks on his next contract, but I think it would be best to avoid guys with an injury history.

Vanek would be a far too expensive of an addition, unless he was acquired with a contract extension included. From what it looks like, Vanek wants to test free agency this summer. Same goes for Callahan

Boyes could likely be had dirt cheap but again, he can’t skate and has too many other holes in his game. There’s a reason why he’s bounced around through so many teams.

What other UFA’a are available? Olli Jokinen, Stempniak, Setoguchi, Ray Whitney, Ott? None of those names appeal to me.

    • Alcatraz

I’m surprised people actually thought it would be active?

Whoever picks up a player today and takes on salary will have to pay the player the next two weeks for no games played lol. Teams will wait till after the break to see if they have any new injuries to worry about, and then will plan for march 5th

      • Sensnation

The cost today is lower than it will be in a few weeks. But this is also why no one is selling, per Tim Murray’s interview yesterday.

The media really built it up for no reason.

        • Millennium

          How shockingly unlike them :p

      • Hax

Yeah I think the big “rush” will be right after the freeze is lifted. Though Sensnation has a good point that the price on some players may go up a bit, but I think the two weeks where the player is paid by the new team is part of it. Plus what if the guy gets hurt on the ski hill after he’s traded?

      • FistsofNeil25

I’m sure there were plenty of “buyers” that were pushing to make deals this week. For some of the players that are expected to be moved, it probably would have been nice for them to have the extra time over the Olympic break to settle in to their new or temporary homes.

From a sellers standpoint, the longer they wait to make a deal, the more likely it is for them to get a greater return for their assets. I kind of expected a couple trades to go down today but not a flurry of deals that’s for sure.

  • RUSH RLZ

Oh man… good for DaCosta I guess where Sens nation seems upset and befuddled as to why he went back to Bingo and the timing of this all… :cP

  • FistsofNeil25

So with Spezza stepping his game up in the last couple games and Ryan being held off the score-sheet lately, is it time to try out our best playmaker with our best goal scorer again?

I sure wouldn’t mind seeing Bobby on the wing with Spezza and an improving Michalek for the Boston game. Greening doesn’t belong with Spezz.

    • Hax

I’d be fine with that but I maintain that there’s nothing really wrong with Ryan’s game. He hasn’t racked up many points, true, but he’s been creating out there and looking good. Throwing his body around, nice passes etc. No real desperation to get him “going” IMO.

      • FistsofNeil25

        I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Ryan’s game either. I don’t
think he’s playing any differently now than he was a few weeks ago. All
players go through streaks and cold periods. The Turris line has still
been playing good hockey even though the numbers aren’t there at the
        moment.

Saying that though, with Spezza and Michalek playing a
bit better lately I definitely wouldn’t be opposed to seeing them with
Ryan again. They haven’t tried that trio out together since the
beginning of the season when Milo and Spezz were trying to find their
        legs.

Maybe they could find some chemistry now and start lighting
the lamp. They’ve had enough time now watching each other practice and
play that they should have a better idea of each-other’s tendencies and
        how they play the game.

Maybe there’s still a chance that Spezza and Ryan could become the dynamic duo we all hoped they could be?

        Just sayin’.

        • Hax

Same page. Who would you slot in with MacTur?

          • FistsofNeil25

It’s a tough call. It’s part of the reason why I don’t think we have quite have the right mix of forwards here right now. If Zibanejad is playing center as he will be on Saturday vs the Bruins, we’ll be forced to move someone like Greening or Condra onto the top two lines. Neither of those players are legitimate top 6 forwards.

I don’t believe in forcing a player to play on the side of the ice that they aren’t comfortable on. A lot of forwards aren’t comfortable playing their off-wing.

If we put Michalek-Spezza-Ryan together, we’ll be forcing either Conacher or Greening to play their off-wing on one of the 2nd-4th lines assuming MacArthur stays on Turris’ left side.

          • Millennium

I think Zibanejad needs to stay in the top 6. He has shown too muich skill and potential to be left on the third line. Since Turris and Spezza aren’t gonna be shifted in any scenario, Zib needs to stay on the wing. And he’s been doing quite well there. Coupled with SDC’s strong play, that gave us a really good set of options.

          • Simple Jack

            zibanejad

    • Deadly

Our best playmaker, love to see Ryan with DaCosta.

  • Deadly

It is so amazing how we now look at SDC after his recent performances. This year you can see how much stronger he is. He still can get dumped but not as much.
There may yet be room for him on the team but I think he might end up in Buffalo due to his contract situation.

  • Andrews theory

Here’s what I’d like to propose

    MM Spezza Ryan
    Stone Turris Mac
    Conacher Zibanejad Condra
    Neil Smith Greening

As for Da Costa, he’s played great and I’m sure they told him, if he was a natural winger he wouldn’t be going anywhere but currently he’s 5 th or 6th on the depth chart for centers. He’ll have to be dealt…

  • Andrews theory

Wonder if we could put a package together for Yandle…

They desperately need some offense and I’m pretty confident that he’d be an upgrade over Cowen in the top two pairing.

Would completely change the dynamic of this team.

  • Sandy

So I wonder if Karlsson goes complaining to Alfie about what happened after the game last night? Then Alfie trying to sell him on how good Detroit is..

    • Millennium

Not too many great things happening in Detroit the city or Detroit the team quite frankly :p

    • SenaTHOR

I would doubt if he is that immature. He would join the ranks of forum poster if he did.

  • Andrews theory

The only advantages of living in Detroit over Ottawa are less taxes and likely better access to international flights.

Detroit itself is a shit hole, I’ll throw it in the same category as Atlanta.

Can’t imagine his wife or kids prefer it. Regardless, Murray locked him in long term and at a steal of a price. If any other team is asking about Karlsson they better be prepared for the longest revuild in history.

    • PraiseAlfie11

“Detroit itself is a shit hole, I’ll throw it in the same category as Atlanta.”

Dude…what’s wrong with Atlanta? I’ve been to both. I had no problems walking around in downtown, midtown or Buckhead. Detroit? Not a chance did I venture more than 1/2 block from the ren cen at night.

I’ve been to a lot of cities, and Detroit is, by far, the scariest town I have ever been to (but I hear the suburbs are nice).

      • aegiszx

The burbs in Detroit are pretty nice, yes… but many other areas are yeah, complete shitholes. I was most recently there in the autumn for a game at Joe Louis and man… it was a wreck. During the day it was dead… and night, even worse. No lights on downtown, NO LIGHTS ON!! Officers directing traffic and standing on every corner.

I’m not a local resident, but I’ve been to many great Canadian and US cities, so let me agree with you that it was by far the scariest and most depressing city I have ever been to.

        • PraiseAlfie11

I swear, looking out my hotel room window, I could envision a zombie apocalypse. ..lol!

Even the “people mover” was empty. Anyone who says the Ottawa streets roll up at 5pm has obviously never been to detroit at night. Barren doesn’t even begin to describe the place.

  • Millennium

If we win and Detroit loses tomorrow (today technically), we go into the break in playoff position. Big game.

    • Aaron 2.0

We also play Det in our 1st game back from the Olympics. That will be a big one!

  • esk

would you be in favour of alfie signing with the sens next year?

    • Sensturion

      One day retirement contract.

    • Sandy

IMO as long as Melnyk owns the team… that won’t happen..

  • MoeDozer

looks like Mikael Wikstrand has not missed a beat for the most part since moving up to div1 SHL. hes at 2g5a in 13 games playing in all situations ice time ranging from 15-24mins. Frolunda is currently loaded with young guys although mostly forwards (alex wennberg, erik karlsson, sebastian collberg) their blue line is very young with wikstrand being the youngest (20). 2 others at 21 and only 1 vet in his 30s.

perfect chance for Mikael to play serious minutes before he makes the decision to join bingo possibly in 2015

    • MoeDozer

just to add to swedish prospect news: Tobias Lindberg (2013 4th rounder) 6’3 200lbs C/RW supported the A on his jersey for the u20 Djurgarden team now he is playing on the mens team.

the 18 year old is all a member of the current u19 swedish team, expect him to be a regular on their WJC roster next year.

and goaltender Marcus Hogberg (2013 3rd rounder) currently a back up of the mens team and could be the starter for next years WJC
