Senators Embarrassed on Home Ice- Highlights

- A little bit surprised by the moral outrage over the seemingly harmless incident between Chris Neil and Johan Franzen late in last night’s game.  Franzen was the best player on the ice for the Wings last night but also the most annoying.  Dirty stick work and then yapping at Neil after the whistle a couple times.  I understand that Franzen is just returning from a concussion but if you’re worried about getting hit in the head, don’t run around instigating.  Simple as that. I was actually impressed by Neil’s restraint considering the circumstance.

-The two call ups were probably the lone bright spots on an otherwise ugly night at the CTC.  Mike Hoffman was flying from the moment the puck was dropped and looked like a guy that deserves to be an NHL regular.  And hats off to Andrew Hammond who made his NHL debut in relief of Robin Lehner.  He looked very good in his half a game audition.

-Speaking of Robin Lehner, sort of an intense moment at the Ottawa bench between the Head Coach and his goalie.  I’m sure the message was all positive but I can’t recall ever seeing a moment like that on the Ottawa bench.  Would be interesting to know exactly what was said during the exchange.

-Last night was a pretty strong indication that “rentals” should not be the approach leading up to the deadline.  If Murray is going to make a deal, it should be for someone that has at least another year on his contract and fits in with the team beyond this season.  Obviously defence is an issue that needs to be addressed but I really don’t think there are many reasonable (affordable) options on the market.

  • ChronicallyInjured

Another bright side is that Karlsson was a +1 in a 6-1 loss, thats pretty impressive. Maybe something to bring up when fans of other teams bring up the inevitable “Karlsson is terrible defensively” thread.

Negative side is that the rest of defence isn’t great… something has to be done about Cowen where it’s pretty much painful to see him play.

    • Tooks

He’s like a dead horse, everyone stops and stares, then drives right by.

  • RUSH RLZ

If we drops game in VAN and/or EDM before the deadline, I seriously hope we consider making the best moves to set us up for NEXT year and not to any forms of rentals. This hole gets much deeper and… we will not be crawling out of it.

    • Tooks

Yes we definitely should be sellers, amass a bunch of 2015 picks!

  • Deadly

The Sens need a long road trip.

  • Richard Gough

I better not see this type of game in Calgary or I might have to return my Jersey. I am very disappointing from management down. This season is looking like it is more of a complete right off. Time to put back on my (Hat Spezza hat) Its Sounding like he didn’t do a dam thing to turn this sinking ship around last night.

    • illdistrict

he hit the post, had some good entries on the PP.

    • Tooks

Haha with Greening and no knees, WTF do you want Spezza to do.

  • Conor_smythe

“The two call ups were probably the lone bright spot”

Ya… what else is new? Luke Richardson is a better coach than MacLean

Every time we call somebody up, that player is always the best looking player on our team…

I started to notice last year. Bingo boys have a jump in their step. Ottawa players have cement in their skates

Maclean doesnt skate the team enough. Period

    • Doc

I’m giving away free hugs today if you’re interested. Free of charge!

      Should be a fun day.

      • Bob

You should be busy today! For sure we all need to hug it out today..

    • Sens613

Oh how fast we forget about who won the Jack Adams award for best coach in the NHL!

  • boom

I have been a long time Cowen defender but enough is enough – he is truly awful.

    • SENSsmile

Indeed, while patience may be a virtue, there has to be a line drawn somewhere.

    • illdistrict

he certainly needs to sit out a few games.

    • Tooks

Finally, took you awhile big fella.

      • boom

Yeah, I know…I was going to mention you by name as someone who I have debated this with, but thought it may give you ammunition to gloat :)

    • Conor_smythe

Cowen needed to play in Bingo 2 seasons ago.. Sens brought him up too early and never let him develop properly..

I realize that we didn’t really have any “options” for dmen back then, but thats no reason to call somebody up before they are ready

Even in his rookie season, there were only “flashes” of what he could do.. very inconsistent flashes

Now it seems as if we kyle turrised him.. force him to play even though he’s not ready. blame him for everything, even though its our fault

big defenders need more time. doesn’t matter how hard they can hit, they need more time

    • Miguel

      with you on this Boom.
I was even on record after his rookie year that he would be a norris candidate and a Chara like player.
Something has happened since that rookie year… hell shit happens in life, Hockey is a business, and this former stud needs to be put out to pasture. We have given him every chance and time to call a spade a spade. Serioulsy if it was not for his name he would not even be in the Bingo lineup he would be in Elmira!

  • Laurence Babchyuk

Its no his fault entirely. It’s what he brings around him, he’s not a leader and he doesn’t make anyone around him better. You add Phillips that acts the same in defence and what do you have as a result ? A .500 club that has no peskyness.

Here’s another clue, he was out for 4 games with Phillips this season and during that stretch we saved our season and got back in contention spot. Why ? Cause we were pesky ! Do we have more talent with him in the line up ? Yes, do we play better ? Ohhh hell no ! He doesn’t fit with the Paul Mac system. He’s the only one that doesn’t do it.

I dream the day we get rid of spezza and Phillips. Then we will be a real contender. The worst part is we have a better club then the standings stipulate and wasting a season cause of Phillips and spezza is frustrating.

I would be the first to praise Spezza if he was good for the club.

    • SENSsmile

I agree, unfortunately. Anyone who’s honest in the evaluation of this “point-per-game player” should readily admit that Spezza would never have been able to follow Babcock’s flawless system in Sochi — not even close. Spezza needs to be shipped asap while he may still hold some value for some other team. At the very least, he doesn’t fit the Sens’ system here..

  • Dirk-Diggler

Bring the kids up and run with them… I’d like to see Stone, Hoffman, Da Costa, Classen and Boro up with the team…

I’d like to see new homes found for Phillips, Neil, Conacher, Michalek and Corvo…

I’d keep Spezza, Cowen and Wiercoch…

Cowen should be given another year and he needs to go to TRAINING CAMP! That guy killed himself by holding out…

Glad we didn’t sign him to a 8 year deal! Big bullet dodged…

  • Doc

Come on Chirp! Moulson and Ott will make us contenders!! Cup is ours!!1!

  • whammer44

I’m not sure I’ve understood the philosophy with Cowen all year. When it was clear early on he was not playing at an NHL level, they kept sending him out there and rewarded him by increasing his minutes. This is either MacLean’s or Murray’s (or both) decision and its negative impact on the team as a whole (and specifically on Karlsson) is apparent to anyone who follows the team closely. Cowen may turn out to be the D-man they project, but IMO he currently is nothing but an AHLer benefitting from his high draft status. I’ve appreciated the frankness in MacLean’s coaching but when he uses phrases like the “best players play” and Cowen gets the minutes he’s been getting there has got to be a credibility factor in the room. Since they can’t easily send him to Bingo I would like to see Cowen used as the 7th D for the next few weeks.

Of course the Sens issues are not all Cowen’s fault but inconsistency in their defensive zone are the root of their problems. They need a solid veteran d-man to pair with Ceci and let Wiercioch and Gryba play as the 3rd pairing. Unfortunately Phillips time as a regular player is at an end. Bring him back next year if he’s prepared to take on a Corvo type role but hopefully they can convince him to retire and take a coaching/mgmt position with the team.

And likely Richardson wants to stay in Bingo as long as his daughter is in school in that area, but I would love to see him as an Assistant in Ottawa asap.

    • Miguel

      AMEN Bro

  • Greening sucks

    TIME TO SELL!!!

The only solutions to Cowen is clearly AHL time. Send him down, cant believe Gryba is the better of the 2 right now,

Just accept fate and trade Philips and Michalek, and one of Greening or Condra or maybe both, time to trim the fat off this team and open up some spots for the kids that can do the job better.

Call up Cleasson and Cole Schneider ( Can easily take over Greening or Condras spot, plays a 200 foot game, leads Bingo in shorthanded goals and pts, plus has a better scoring touch than both.

    MacArthur- Turris- Conacher
    Hoffman- Zibenejad- Ryan
    Michalek/Condra/Greening package trade- Spezza- Stone
    Schneider- Smith- Neil

    Methot- Karlsson
    Weircioch- Gryba
    Cleasson- Ceci

    • Doc

He can’t, he’ll have to clear waivers.

      • Dirk-Diggler

        He would :P

        • SenaTHOR

The kid is a first round pick, is big. Somebody would pick him up and give him a try for free.

      • Tooks

Yep, Sens screwed up early in the season when he was illegible to go back down, they kept him up, now were stuck with him and his attrocious play.

      • Miguel

who gives a rats ass!… let him go to waivers, and lets all pray to God someone is stupid enought to pick him up…. Win Win!

        • Doc

Yeah, no. That’s just stupid and bad asset management.

          • Miguel

Really what brain dead manager would pick that 10 or so Mil left on that contract, when this kid is this bad (Milbury is gone)?
You can try to pretend that this will turn around all you want, but bottom line -10 in two games, and if you actually watch the games the proof is in the pudding…. Cowen is a dud, you cannot teach NHL Speed, and he has barely beer league speed…
Every opposing coach is telling their players to go to Cowens side, and they will score!
sorry to burst your bubble, he sucks

          • Doc

            Sure thing, Cap’n!

You also can’t teach big, and although he has been…umm…not up to par to say the least, I’m not ready to give up on the kid. He’s 23 for crying out loud.

Giving him away for free also serves no purpose. At least wait until he settles down and sell a little higher. He’s worth nothing right now. Package him in the summer in a bigger deal.

  • SenaTHOR

If Cowen plays next game McLean should have to go to the press box. I never though Wiercioch should be in ahead of Cowen except his brutal play has changed my mind. Cowen is a slow skater and slow to judge. Does he even speak? Why did he not call for help on that last play?

    • Tooks

I’ve been saying exactly that all year, and got ALOT of hate for it, now, most folks seem to be on the same page as me. About time.

  • boom

Does anyone think that Jack Adams would have waited so long to pull Lehner last night? WTF was he waiting for? How much worse could Hammond be compared to what Lehner was?

    • illdistrict

he had absolutely no chance on two of those goals. I can see why a coach would be hesitant to put in an AHL goalie against Detroit.

      • BFR

Regardless of whether the goals were the goalie’s fault or not, you change the goalie to wake up the team before it gets to 5-0.

        • Don Ciccio

How about using a timeout after the second or third goals as well….Lehner didn’t make many saves but the only goal that I can fault him on was Det’s 5th goal scored by Franzen where he left his post and Franzen roofed it.

      • Conor_smythe

… he put lehner in… I wouldn’t exactly call Lehner an NHL goalie

save percentage is one thing.. win percentage is another.. Lehner has a very poor win percentage

blame the team all you want, winners find a way to win

      • Conor_smythe

also, according to travis yost, a goalies job is to stop 920/1000 shots, regardless of whether they are “big saves” or “small saves”

therefor, doesn’t matter what the team does in front, every shot is weighted equally, and lehner should have stopped more than he did

  • OverMind

went to the game… i have a knack for going to games where ottawa loses, only ever went to about 11, never seen them win once live…

anyway, Cowen… what can you say, seeing him flop around the ice live is something else. when he is out there its literally a power play for the other team.

    • Sens613

Can you please stop going to games…lol.

  • A-Train

I understand people are upset, but can we at the very least trim back the “send Cowen to the AHL” comments? Not how it works.

    • Tooks

But it could have worked, when he was illegible to return without waivers about 20 games in. Big mistake by Sens management to keep him in the NHL…Clearly he’s not rdy. Needs 2-3 more years in the AHL.

      • FistsofNeil25

They weren’t going to do that though. They weren’t going to send him down after just signing him to a 4 year 12.4 mill contract. They believed he was better than this.

Now I bet they don’t know what the answer is. They’re trying to let him play through his struggles but for weeks now he’s really been hurting the team. I needs to take a seat and the organization better realize this. Wiercioch may not be a great defender but he’s no worse than Cowen at this point in time and at least he can actually move the puck and play the powerplay.

        • Tooks

In which lies the mistake. signing him to a ridiculous deal after seeing his rookie year. Now they wish they hadnt, plus he held out to get that contract, Red flags everywhere with this kid.

          • FistsofNeil25

Well his rookie season was part of the reason why they gave him that contract. He had a very solid rookie year. He hasn’t done a damn thing since then though.

I agree though, lots of red flags. He didn’t want to play in Bingo during the lockout. Then he got injured and rushed himself back into the line-up late last season so he could get an NHL paycheck. Then the contract hold out during training camp when he desperately needed the time to work on his game and work with his teammates.

If you watch this guy play the game, his problems aren’t just a lack of mobility, he actually has no friggen clue how to play the game. He has a pretty low hockey IQ.

That contract was a huge mistake.

          • A-Train

It is a really puzzling regression. But it happens. I’d love to be able to look into the future and see what it holds for Cowen.

I’ve said this before but a good outcome for the Sens might be something similar to what happened with Luke Schenn in Toronto. Top 10 pick, good rookie season then he fell flat. But Burke was still able to use that pedigree to pry JVR out of Philly.

          • FistsofNeil25

I know Schenn had fallen off big time in Toronto, but was he ever as bad as Cowen is now?

          • A-Train

It got pretty bad toward the end. Unpopular with fans, lots of talk about “no foot speed” and “bad judgement”. Started appearing in a lot of trade rumours.

It’s not an identical situation…and maybe this morning is a bad time to evaluate which player is “worse”…but I still think there’s value in Cowen.

          • FistsofNeil25

I think Burkie was just lucky to take advantage of an always desperate Paul Holmgren. Maybe Murray can call up Philly and pry out Simmonds, Couturier or B Schenn for Cowen lol

            Wishful thinking.

          • SenaTHOR

Yes, very much the same. Physical with heavy feet. Both are like dance floors. They get danced on a lot.

          • Miguel

that ship has sailed, there is not one GM stupid enough to touch Cowen right now

          • A-Train

I think you’re wrong there … but acknowledge it’s tough to see it that way today.

          • Miguel

I hear you… but we are very guilty of over valuing our own prospects. Cowen would be an interesting example.
Please understand that I was a huge Cowen fan, that has “seen the light”
I may be way off here, but right now I am not sure we get anything for him with a 12 MIl contract for a trade
best case to get rid of him is waivers, and a rich team make him their experiment.
Sorry if I seem too harsh but -10 in 2 games is not a coincidence IMO

      • A-Train

Sure, you can criticize the team for misjudging what they had in Cowen. That’s your right. But personally, after he’d played such a solid 82 game season as a rookie and signed a multi-year deal, I think it’s a little unreasonable. That’s just my opinion though.

I’m just asking — probably in vain — that we don’t have a full board of “send him to the AHL” today when that’s not a possibility contract-wise.

        • Tooks

They cant send him down anymore, its too late but at one point at the start of the season, when it was clear he wasnt rdy, they could have sent him down. They decided to keep him.

  • SenaTHOR

My goodness is being on for 10 goals in two games a record?

  • SENSsmile

I wonder who’s the worst “Mule”: Franzen or MacLean?

  • Greening sucks

Can this managment finally get through their thick skulls that our problem isnt finding spezza a winger or another top 9 winger, its actually a defense.

We have 2 top 4 dman in KArlsson and Methot and thats it, we are missing other 2, Ceci is a potential top 4 dman but he needs a decent vet to help him out and Philips isnt, the rest of our defense is a bunch of 5-6 ppl and thats it!!

Fix the defense first then get giggles a winger.
    Methot-Karlsson
    ????-?????
    Weircioch- Ceci
    Cowen

    • Senators Pundit

      Upvote x 1,000!

Why is everyone talking about a top 6 winger?!?!

Our defensive core has been brutal all season. They are way too young, and the vets we do have are being leaned on so heavily that they just can’t shut down an opponent for an entire 60 minutes.

I get that we have too many D, but if we want to win anytime soon, we need to balance our youth with experience.

  • SENSsmile

How quickly things have unraveled for Cowen. Unbelievable!

    http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=682546

    • SenaTHOR

And Tim Murray got the hell out of Dodge!

  • FistsofNeil25

It’s so hard not to be negative right now. What an embarrassing loss on one of the most important nights of the season. We have one of the worst defenses in the league and us fans are still somehow expecting this team to find a way to make the playoffs?! Maybe it’s time to be a little more realistic with expectations for this budget team.

Pittsburgh, Boston, Tampa Bay, Montreal, Toronto are pretty much locked in to playoff spots now, meaning Ottawa only has a shot at the last wild card spot at this point in time as two of the remaining playoff spots will go to teams from the metropolitan division.

We’re left battling with 6-8 other teams for the last and final playoff spot. If we’re being completely honest, I can’t see the Sens getting in. Not with the defense we have, not with Greening and Condra playing top six minutes, and not with the obvious lack of leadership.

Hopefully the Sens prove me wrong but I’m really starting to have my doubts.

  • Tyler Oakman

    Dan Girardi, Byfuglien, Erhoff:

Which one do you like the most/is most realistic to trade for?

    • FistsofNeil25

Girardi and Byfuglien would likely cost us at least one of Zibanejad, Ceci, or Lazar. I think we’d be better off throwing a boatload of cash at Girardi as a free agent, Byfuglien isn’t a good defender. I’m not sure how good Erhoff is anymore. It’s hard to judge anyone’s talent level that plays for Buffalo.

      • Doc

Really doubt Girardi tests the UFA market to be honest. Callahan is out for sure so NY’s focus is on keeping Girardi.

    • Doc

Heard that Girardi might be asking around 5,5 mil long term, so I’m pretty sure he’s out of the question. My guess is he stays in NY anyways.

Big Buff would be awesome, but he’s going to cost a lot.

Erhoff would be the logical and least expensive choice, so I would go with him.

      • Finn 8

I would Target Erhoff and Stafford. I would also see what you can get for Bobby Ryan, I have really bad feeling that this guy will not resign here

        • Doc

Agreed on Erhoff and Stafford, but I wouldn’t even think of trading Ryan.

  • illdistrict

watching the highlights, Cowen got burnt by the mule in a race for the puck. Then milo tried to cover for him. Don’t sent him to the AHL, sent that dog to the Glen Cairn Skating Club (held at sensplex) while the team is away on their road trip.

    • illdistrict

is he the next Chara? or the next Hal Gil.

    • Tooks

I know right, Franzen, of all people. This should have been a game where Cowen gets up and smiles and is excited about it. Big bodies to bang, should have been a physical game for him.

This was exactly the type of game that Cowen should excel in. Its what he’s built for and flopped. SELL!

  • Tooks

AND Detroit was coming off a back to back which went to OT to boot…

  • runningbear1974

People keep complaining about us being a budget team… Let’s just spend money that will fix us… But, the reality is that the problem with our team is some of the people who are making the most money… Spezza, Michalek, Phillips gets 3million… Money isn’t the problem… The quality and type of players is the problem…

    • FistsofNeil25

Every team has bad contracts, but the teams that are willing to spend are able to cover up those bad contracts by still putting better players on the ice around those bad contracts.

      • runningbear1974

Not every team has bad contracts… Teams like Philly, NYR, and Toronto just throw money around, but look how they’ve done… Bad contracts means bad judgement by the GM… We shouldn’t model ourselves on bad teams… It’s all about the quality of player, and specifically, how a player reacts when faced against better opposition…

    • runningbear1974

Bad mood today, so i’ll stick to my own thread… The problem with our team is we need another Spezza… Spezza is the solution… If we just had a Spezza, everything would be ok… So, happy we have Spezza… I brag to all the other teams… Yeah you cheer for Boston, good for you, but we have Spezza… You like Montreal, but we have Spezza… Spezza is the best player… He’s so skilled… Look at all that skill, just ridiculous Team Canada didn’t want him… He’s drooling with skill… So happy he’s the captain… He shows the other players how they should play… Why can’t all the other guys play like Spezza, that would fix our team… Spezza is so awesome, he’s the best…

        • runningbear1974

Spezza is the best… There’s no way we can miss the playoffs with Spezza… I always feel safe when he’s on the ice… Anyone who doesn’t recognize how good Spezza is must be stupid…

  • Finn 8

Who here thinks Bobby Ryan is going to resign. I really cannot see it.

    • Doc

      He’s quitting hockey?!?

      • Michenator

Ya people should start writing re-sign, it’s a lot less confusing.

    • Dirk-Diggler

Only Melnyk… and, at a discount!

    • FistsofNeil25

We’ll find out this summer. Murray will try to sign him to an extension. If a deal isn’t reached between them in the offseason then we will know that Ryan will be looking to test the market.

B Murray cannot afford to let him walk away. He will either be extended or traded.

      • Finn 8

This one will be hard. Because you know the flyers will offer him the world. The longer he stays here the less value he will have. My feeling on the mater is that he shown signs that he might not be happy here. When he first came here he was alway given interviews and smiling. You hardly see him give a interview. When you watch sens t.v extras It looks like he not part of the group. This is just me looking from outside, I just have a feeling that he not really part of the group. Now you have the coach moving him down to the third line. However, that line look really good at the beginning of the game last night.

    • Tooks

Tough to say, seems like he’s buddies with Turris off the ice, you would think if we start to gain momentum and make noise in the playoffs, he stays but if we fall apart and start selling pieces, he might feel he is next…

I dont understand why Maclean took him off line 2 with Turris, such a stupid move. Is he trying to get Ryan to leave?

      • Finn 8

The Sens are such a gong show right now. The owner cannot keep his month shut and drama around this team right now. The best this team have played this year is when Speeza was out. I not saying trade Spezza, but the coach needs to mange his ice time better

      • Doc

The Zibby line was awesome last night. They were all over Detroit. Not like he got demoted. They were probably our best line.

Hoffman has some serious wheels. Was nice to see him with Zibby. Hope they keep that line intact.

  • SuckitPhaneuf

If everyone here clearly sees cowen needs to be benched, why does the coaching staff keep giving him chance after chance
Are we that much smarter than mclean.

    • Dirk-Diggler

I once asked the gutless Ottawa media to ask MacLean why he keeps deploying Cowen and they said I should not tell them to do their jobs! Guys like Garrioch, Brennan and others just toe the company line…

  • Michenator

All this Cowen bashing really has me remembering how he was 2 years ago. He was looking like he was going to become a serious NHL’er and then he goes and get’s injured(hip surgery). So now that he’s had serious hip and knee surgery the question is, do you think he’ll be able to get back to snuff on the skating front. That to me is his number 1 weakness right now, lack of speed and mobility. If he can’t properly adjust to make the big hit or correct himself to recover in situations then he’s gonna be useless.

    • SenaTHOR

Never was very mobile. Saw him in the world juniors twice and he was marginal at best. He looked OK in the WHL playing against weak competition and kids 3 years younger. Was exposed against teams top lines..again mobility. The media PUMPS these junior players into demi-saviors and when they don’t develop everybody wonders why? Cowen was drrafted as a flawed player coming off a serious injury. It was a gamble and the gamble isn’t paying any winnings. I can’t believe they paid him what they did.

    • runningbear1974

      1) I don’t think he had such a great rookie season… He was ok… Better than Gilroy… I spent that whole year complaining about him…
      2) He has 2 major weaknesses, his mobility, and his decision making, and now he’s learning from Phillips how to point fingers…

      • SenaTHOR

The rink is a noisy place if you have ever played hockey. I have NO problem with verbal and signal communication on the ice if players react to it. It’s a problem if you signal because you are lazy or out of position or you signal too late. Visual and auditory cues help if done properly.

  • Miguel

watied 3 weeks for that shti show last night!
Cowen is fukin shit shit shit!!! Everyone he plays with suffers… Gryba was playing great until last night
Was Cowen ever good?… yes maybe… is it the hip?… does it matter… Stuborness to keep playing him and Philips has pretty much cost us the playoffs,
Cowen is AWFUL, and coach and mangagement has proven that to every single person who has ever watched hockey that he is useless
And to those Phillips fans who say he brings experience and can teach the young guys… he taught Cowen how to point to others when they are too slow and out of position.
TRADE COWEN AND PHILLIPS for……. nothing! and I mean even the last pick in the 7th round…. waivers…. I do not want to pay to watch that shit anymore.
I dont care how, just get these two off or our team, so we can play our better players.

  • TrueLou

I’ll fix this mess for you right now: karlsson & cowen to edmonton..hall & perron to sens..

Did Lehner party the entire Olympic break? Wow he sucked! And please no more Chris Phillips. Somebody please take him out behind the barn and put an end to our misery!

Let’s hope Sunday is better than last night’s garbage.

Let’s hope Andy is back soon!

So with our current position, mathematically we would need close to 14 wins, 6 losses and 2 overtime losses to be close to getting in the playoffs.

Now, we look at the Sens schedule for the remainder of the season.

West Coast = Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Nashville, Colorado, Dallas, Chicago
    Our Division = Montreal x 2, Tampa Bay x 2, Florida, Toronto
    East Coast = Carolina x 2, NY Islanders x 2, New Jersey, NY Rangers x 2

Scary situation if we are only, mathematically, suppose to lose 8 (with 2 in OT), 5 of our remaining games are afternoon affairs. With our streak, that leaves us with 14 wins and 3 losses against some tough clubs.

There isn’t any time to keep experimenting with our lineups, or keep certain underachieving players in, in hopes they turn around.

We have a few games before the trade deadline. Hopefully Murray can shed some weight and bring in some character players.

Out of the schedule, there certainly are some winnable games… but there are 13 games played against those that we could be fighting against for the last spot…

MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN! GO SENS GO!!!!!!!!

  • thirstytraveller

It seems this team thinks it can qualify for the playoffs with little or no effort. They just dont work hard and smart enough. Missing the playoffs may be the best reality check for some of these players. Sucks that Murray traded the 2014 1st round pick this year, but Murray should compile a sale list. To start Phillips, Corvo, Conacher, 9mm, Greening. Load up on some picks or ahl prospects with potential. yes Cowan absolute sucked last night. But there is no sense trading while his value is this low. The Senators will look ridiculous selling him for a 5th round pick now espicially if he has a decent year in 2015.

  • EHMatt

I think it’s obvious by now that a scoring forward is not the priority. This team needs defense. Ehrhoff or Edler would be my preference, but there are quite a few that are available, but only for the right price. I’m not giving up on the season, but it may also be wise to try to acquire a first round pick for either Phillips or Michalek. If Douglas Murray can land a team 2 second rounders, then Phillips should at least land a first. He can always resign on July 1st if he really wants to play in Ottawa.
Cowen obviously misses Gonchar (I am in no way suggesting that we re-acquire him). I think he seriously needs a 2 week conditioning stint in the minors. Luckily he is still young and can work his way out of this funk. He’ll have to put in some hard work this summer because that hip looks like it’s still bothering him.

    • SENSsmile

Then why the F*** does MacLean persist in giving Cowen top minutes? He’s having a miserable season and is being set up for failure. This is the part that I find most mind-boggling.

  • A-Train

    Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger 29s
Expect Chris Philips contract talks to continue today. Trade still an option with Bruins believed to be among teams with interest.

    • FistsofNeil25

Does anyone know what kind of terms the Phillips camp is asking for? or what the Sens are offering him?

      • boom

Phillips said he’d prefer to just point to the number that he wants.

        • Tooks

Anything over 2.5Mil a season for Phillips is too much. Send him to the Bruins, that would actually help us!!

          • FistsofNeil25

I would think that even 2.5 mill is too much. But then again player salaries are just becoming more and more inflated due to the rising cap.

      • Doc

2 years is what he’s asking I believe. Money I’m not sure.

  • SenaTHOR

When the best players don’t play the rest go WHAT THE FK!

  • Andrews theory

Cowen has been horrible and this is nothing new but giving up on him permanently is about as stupid an idea as I’ve seen posted in a long time. Buy low sell high…sit his ass in the press box for a bit and when he does get back in, shelter his minutes.

I’d be ok with moving out assets this year for picks and/or quantity for quality.

    Open for business and currently entertaining offers for;

Phillips, Corvo, MM, Greening, Condra, Smith and yes Jason Spezza

    • Miguel

we, and myself included are way to guilty of over valuing our assets.
I have many that I am guilty of
But that entire list you have put up to offer for a trade, aside from Spezza…what do you think we would be able to get back from other teams in a trade?
Other GM’s and scouts are paid extremely well to better their teams, you are proposing 4th line players, and 7th dmen at best… I agree I would like to move them, but if we are expecting more than lower picks, than we are mistaken.

      • FistsofNeil25

All you expect for Smith is a lower pick? Wrong. I bet we can get decent value back for most of those players aside from Condra and Corvo. It would probably be impossible to give Corvo away for free.

        • Miguel

Smith 2nd or 3rd round pick… no way you classify Smith as better than Kelly and we got a 2nd for Kelly

      • Tooks

Indeed, those guys would go for pucks and sticks at the moment. Only guy who could get you a decent return is Spezza and aprt from the big clubs who can spend to take on his contract, I dont know anyone else in the small market teams that can afford him.

Cowen could get you something decent aswell, we need to convince EDM into taking Cowen, management there is questionable at best.

      • Andrews theory

Reality is we have a backlog of young guys ready to contribute at the NHL level and all of the guys I’ve listed have already peeked. Move em out, make some room for the prospects in the system and give out additional ice time so of the guys already on the big squad, specifically Zib..
I’m confident Phillips and Smith could both land a decent return currently with teams looking to push into the playoffs and people seem to forget, Greening was arguably one of our most effective playoff players last season…

    • SenaTHOR

Agree, nobody is taking him unless we carry over 2milion a year.

  • FistsofNeil25

Timmy Murray was just on SN360 Update and he was asked if he thinks he can get something done with Bryan. He said he’s trying to get something done with him but he doesn’t know if he’ll be the guy he deals with in the end.

So at least we know they’re still trying to get something done. Hopefully it’s Ehrhoff. I wouldn’t mind giving Myers a shot here either. He has tons of potential. A lot more than Cowen anyway.

    • Tooks

Meh, dont know about Myers, they are both from the same branch. Ehrhoff would be better IMO. But I really hope its Ott or Moulson or even Stafford.

      • FistsofNeil25

Myers has the skating ability and offensive upside that Cowen doesn’t. I think he has the potential to be a really good two-way d. Ehrhoff may suit our needs more now but I wouldn’t be upset if we acquired Myers that’s for sure.

Cowen is a Timmy Murray guy and Myers may not be. Cowen + Prince + for Myers?

  • gds

anthony camara and joe morrow are 2 players ottawa has been looking at if a move to boston for big rig (if he doesnt sign, they want to sign him)

    • gds

if a move to the pens ottawa would like to see if they can get matt niskanen than try and sign him

      • FistsofNeil25

Don’t think Pittsburgh trades Niskanen for Phillips. Niskanen is the far better player.

        • gds

Niskanen contract is up and the end of the year so he might be on his way out, since scott harrington will be pushing for his job next year

          • FistsofNeil25

Even if Pittsburgh isn’t interested in re-signing Niskanen, he’s still a better player for the remainder of the season and playoff run than Phillips.

          • gds

not saying it will happen i know ottawa is looking at niskanen and pens have been looking at phillps if he is not signed

      • sprucesens

        cool, keep the rumours coming

      • Andrews theory

With Letangs future in jeopardy, i cant’ see Pittsburgh letting him go for Phillips. May have to package in something extra there…

    • Tooks

I would jump all over Camara if this is true. I doubt Boston lets him go tho, kid is gonna be one hell of a leader!

      • gds

        camara is a great player

        • Andrews theory

looks to a possible replacement for Neil no?

      • FistsofNeil25

I don’t know about the leader part but I do know he has potential to be a pretty decent power forward in the NHL. That’s something we could really use.

  • MethotToMyMadness

I think Detroit having played the night before, wasn’t tired, they were motivated and had more energy. We often look at the opposition playing back to backs as a bonus, but in this case, where everyone has been off on such a long break, It was the complete opposite. Detroit came out to play, and the Sens were somewhat flat at times, which just put them too far behind. We had our share of shots on net, so it wasn’t all bad, but Detroit was able to capitalize on EVERY mistake we made.

Lehner’s performance was probably the worst I’ve seen from him. Good thing Hammond came up big in the replacement. Cowen’s seat in the press box is well deserved, maybe it will shake some life into him. So many plays last night where he couldn’t even stand up his opponent. He looked like a boy who was scared to do anything.

Take this game, throw it out the window and look forward. The Sens cannot look back at this if they plan to do anything about the current standings. Do I think they can crack the 8th spot, anything is possible. But the numbers don’t lie and history has shown us if you aren’t in the top 8 before Jan, odds are you won’t be come the end of the season. Really hope those stats don’t hold true this year.

  • sprucesens

chirp, nice pic of your baby girl! I recently found out i’m having a daughter as well, and all the onesies I have are sens or hockey Canada!(5 total) lol. Hopefully nobody gets her confused for a boy

  • thirstytraveller

Anticipate another afternoon loss on sunday. I fail to see why Senators management/ownership continues to allow themselves to play these stupid afternoon games. Their routine is shot and they seem to always come out flat for the first two periods.
Horror show to begin @ 1pm PST (4pmEST)

    • Sensnation

Is there suddenly a way to change the schedule mid season? They learned it this year and will probably move away from it in the future. Can’t do anything about it for this season other than try to show up.

    • sprucesens

NOOO, i’m flying to that game. they better come out hungry as hell, after BM says to them, play good or get traded!

  • things that make me go hmmmmm

    Ottawa loses 6-1

King Karlsson literally plays half the game, and is still a +1.

    • Doc

I will politely ask you to leave immediately.

Today is a day for panic and negativeness. Silly happy person.

    • Sensnation

0 points, and plays half the game contributing nothing offensively. Not sure why you feel he performed.

      • sprucesens

6 goals against and he wasn’t on for one of them, while playing half the game. Not to mention is a +1? That’s fairly impressive, even if you just take into account bad luck of coming on at the wrong time or something.

  • thepez

The panic level and jumping off the bandwagon on here is at an all-time ridiculous level. Last year at this time you were all singing the praises of the entire organization and now they have no fucking clue as to what they are doing. It must be trade deadline time because every player on this team is useless and needs to be traded for 3 first round picks. Blowing up this team by trading away their young players is not the answer. Let’s be honest even if this team made the playoffs chances are they potentially could win one round at maximum. Patience everyone. As much as I want to see them play better they are a young team just learning what it takes to play when expectations are higher. Trust BM and crew to get this right.

    • Conor_smythe

people who actually know hockey have been panicking all year..

even during our brief “winning” streak.. none of those wins were convincing

if anybody thought we had turned a corner based on those games, I feel for you

this is the same team that allowed 200+ shots in 4 games.. nothing has changed

      • thepez

Actually the people who really matter have not been panicking. Unrealistic expectations has caused all of this “panic” .

        • Conor_smythe

I really don’t think making the playoffs is an “unrealistic expectation”

that’s where the panic is coming from now, and thats where it was coming from back then

          • Conor_smythe

Lol “the people who really matter”

            what does that even mean?

          • Conor_smythe

I dunno dog.. I just dont know

          • thepez

I’m talking about the team management.
Obviously you don’t read what is written on here or what was said and written prior to the season about this team….

        • runningbear1974

we made the playoffs last year without Spezza and Karlsson… Expectations to make the playoffs this year with Spezza and Karlsson are not unrealistic…

      • Sensnation

Ya I’m going to have to disagree there too. All the little whiners that are panicking bought into us being a SC contender over the summer. Not really an indication those people actually know hockey.

    • runningbear1974

I loved last year’s team… Easy to cheer for… This year is terrible… I still like the young guys, and the new guys… but…

    • Miguel

still the bandwagon just sick of sitting next to the likes of:
      - Cowen Phillips on D – rather PW46 and some newer prospect
      - and Greening and Cowen on our top 6 – when SDC Hoffman Stone Peterson are all better than them.
you can sit there all you want on you high perch with your blinders and judge other die hard fans, but the team has made some terrible decisions, and its time to move some dead wood, and give some well deserved prospects their shot at performing. And I am of the opinion we would be a better team if we moved the duds and let our more skilled younger players strut their stuff.

  • Cicero

I’ve waffled and waivered all season on the hold/trade question with just about every player.

I think the problem for me, and I suspect for many fans (if not the Senators organization at large) is this: What is the vision for this team, and what pieces need to be moved and placed in order to achieve this vision?

Young players don’t necessarily mature and develop according to plan. This makes visioning a difficult exercise. Last season, the vision was created through on-ice play: peskiness. The team seemed to come together through adversity and almost everyone who stayed healthy brought a pleasant surprise to the team. But this season, it feels like we’re all suffering from a post-11 identity crisis.

Who is leading this team? When you look at other teams and their identities and their visions, often the leader (and the core leadership group) embodies them.

What is the identity, the personality, of the Sens going forward? What is the vision? The organization has done such a great job of drafting. We have much talent, size, and youth, but there is a leadership vacuum. Or, perhaps more accurately, those who lead by example each night are rarely the players with C or A on their jerseys.

When I hear fans talk about the need for a core player, or two, and not a rental, I think it comes from this vacuum needing to be filled. We need both talent and leadership.

But we have both in our current roster. If I were the manager, I’d shake this team up right now. Give Kyle Turris the Captaincy, Ryan an A, and Neil deserves to keep the A. I’d trade for a power forward and a top-4 D.

Spezza, Michalek and Phillips must be traded. Any longer, and their trade value drops quickly. We’re not done rebuilding until the deadwood is removed.

    • Dirtysweetness

      Brilliant! Thanks for this post!

    • SENSsmile

      +100!

  • Big Lue

Last night’s game was a must win. If I were GM I’d be considering offers for Michalek and Philips at the deadline. I personally wouldn’t want to tie up a significant amount next season’s cap on those two, so might as well get something in return and use the money freed up and assets acquired to get some younger more dynamic players who can make an impact.

  • Sensnation

All the arm chair gms don’t have any patience for tough seasons that concentrate on growing the young players. It’s a transition season, a brutal one, but it’s part of what’s needed for this group to learn. Looking forward to the deadline deals to give us a better indication of how and when this team makeup will change.

    • runningbear1974

I have no issues with the young guys growing… I have problems with old guys sucking, but who have tenure on the team…

      • Sensnation

Most Post Prime players suck compared to when they were younger. But they are still needed to help bring the young guys along. Natural progression of the human body. Spezza, Phillips can’t carry this team anymore and are going through their own transitions this season as well with the change in leadership.

    • sprucesens

yeah, I think most people want to see more of our young players getting some ice time up front, and replacing one of the horrible young D guys. The rest, at least from my perspective, want to see the “rebuilt” forwards that we drafted start to get some time, rather than the stop gaps, and players we hadn’t planned on aquiring in the first place (mm9)

  • FBP

This is sad. It would be more sad if he wasn’t a multi-millionaire, brewery owner living the dream:

All good buddy. Being snarky today because I don’t feel like complaining.

We know what situation we are in, and management does too. Hopefully they can find a solution to make us all happy.

    • RUSH RLZ

I love the Philips legacy in Ottawa and I full well appreciate how much he loves it here. That being said I hope he stay with us at the deadline and retires at the end of the season.

I do NOT however want him back on this team next year.

  • Dirk-Diggler

The Sens could really capitalize if they are smart. There are only a few teams in seller mode (Buffalo, Florida, Edmonton, Calgary and NYI). The prices for T6 or T4 players are pretty high so if Ottawa decides to move some guys like Smith, Neil, Spezza, Condra, Michalek, Phillips, Cowen, Gryba or Ryan they may be able to recapture a good young player or a few decent draft choices. The Sens have done a good job restocking the cupboard at least so everyone says. Why not move all the guys who you don’t suspect being here in 2-3 seasons and give opportunity to guys like Hoffman, Stone, Da Costa, Boro, Classen etc who are waiting in the wings and hungry for an opportunity.

    • Andrews theory

one challenge with this may be in meeting the cap floor next year… they may end up in a position where they have to overpay players beyond their worth. Guess it wouldn’t be any different then right now though for some of them lol…

      • Dirk-Diggler

But maybe they can also use more picks and prospects to trade for players too… I’d actually like Gaborik and Boyle in the offseason..

Gaborik 3 year deal at $18M Boyle 2 year deal at $12.5M

        • Sensnation

Why pay Gaborik to sit injured for 3 years? He’s an electric talent, but just doesn’t have the drive to stay on the ice. At 32yrs old, not sure it’s worth the money or gamble.

          • Dirk-Diggler

It’s a risk for sure but he’s an elite player when healthy and has the speed to play with a guy like Karlsson feeding him in transition.

          • Sensnation

Agreed, just hard to justify on a budget team. We’ve been relatively healthy this year and it’s been tough on fans, imagine with him claiming injury every other week.

          • Dirk-Diggler

I’d like to see elite players come to Ottawa… I also give second chances to people so a guy like Marian may take advantage of it and really pay off

          • Sensnation

He’s past his 2nd chance though. We’d be giving him his 4th chance. Would rather pay to get Hossa back. Getting desperate for these elite players when they are done and just looking for retirement money will result in seasons that are just as frustrating to watch.

I do like the Boyle suggestion though.

          • FistsofNeil25

Kovalev and Gonchar taught us that.

          • sprucesens

I prefer a much cheaper option of cammalleri or hemsky. and for D, who knows… really will change what we need next year, based on what we do in the next week

        • FistsofNeil25

6 mill a year for 3 years of Gaborik? Ya I don’t think so. That guy isn’t going to get us closer to contention playing 40 games a season.

Dan Boyle? Not the type of defenseman we need. We need more of a Dan Girardi type than a Danny Boyle.

        • Doc

Good lord lol. You are willing to trade away Spezza and Ryan yet you want to go get Boyle and Gaborik? lol…

Not sure if you’re serious but I really hope not.

    • RUSH RLZ

I would rather see Neil and Ryan stay put. I also agree with my fellow
level heads that Cowen is worth zero right now, little risk in giving
him a chance to work his ass off in the summer and earn a spot in
training camp… IMO the only possibility of trading Cowen for some quality would be if the Oilers think he needs a change of scenery. They sure as hell are D-starved.

    • Tooks

You cant just keep planning for the future, you will never have a present. Small changes every year keeps the ship afloat. Get rid of dead weight and push for playoffs.

    • Sandy

So what you are saying is the Sens should go into a perpetual re-build..

  • Andrews theory

Im going to go out on a limb here and say that the Bufalo Sabres trade Erhoff for Silfverberg or Noesen….
    book it.

    • Sensnation

Agreed. It really seems like Tim wants one of those, if not both, back.

  • Andrews theory

@ Senschirp, I think that look on her face may be the utter disbelief that Cowen continues to get ice time lol….

  • Miguel

hey we should look at the bright side, yesterday we were saying that there were not enough “sellers” as everyone still thought they had a chance, so we can now join the sellers and charge a premium :-)

I would hope this was the case, but it really sounds like Phillips and the team may come to an extension agreement. The reaction in here if that happens will not be pretty. Most of the pieces sens have to move return little. Michalek is probably the best piece they can move, short of Spezza waiving his NTC and Phillips going to Boston.

You said just a few hours ago that any of the guys we could sell aren’t worth a damn thing and now you’re saying we can charge a premium. I think you’re having a rough day Miguel. I hope the Sens can go on a run and make the playoffs just for the sake of your sanity lol

Chirp, other than Moulson and Ott, do you know if Murray has any interest in other Sabres?

    • SensChirp

      Asked about Ehrhoff too, apparently.

      • FistsofNeil25

I was hoping they have interest. Ehrhoff would be a nice addition. He has a really good cap hit for what he brings to a team. He’s a veteran with plenty of playoff experience and he would give a boost to our powerplay. He would be a massive upgrade to our top 4. He would arguably become our second best defenseman.

I’m worried what the asking price would be. If Tim asked for Lazar + for Steve Ott then I’m terrified to know what he asked for in return for Ehrhoff.

There’s also the question of whether or not we would be on his no-trade list as well.

        • Doc

Lazar ain’t going no where. Murray already said he’s one of the few ‘untouchables’.

          • FistsofNeil25

I’m aware of that. I’m not worried that we would trade Lazar. I’m just saying that the asking price for Ehrhoff must be sky high if Tim asked for Lazar + for Ott

          • MethotToMyMadness

Tim knows Lazar and no doubt would be asking for him in any trade Ottawa makes. It’s one of the crappy parts about trading with him, he had a big hand in many of the drafted players and no doubt has his favorites.

          • Doc

Yep, and he said so in an interview on TSN1200. One thing he does know in and out, is our team and our farm system.

          • Lucretia

Tim Murray does not have a player on his roster that will solve our problems going forward. The players Tim Murry wants are the players worth keeping. Let him rebuild his team with some other teams best young talent, after all he is now a division rival.

          • Doc

Did he really? I was not aware. That’s just wrong if he did.

Really not a fan of Ott to begin with.

      • Andrews theory

        yes please!

More from LeBrun on yesterday’s Daily Chirp

    Sens interested in Stewart

We have reported before that the Ottawa Senators have made it a priority to acquire a forward before the deadline.

The Senators have inquired with the St. Louis Blues about Chris Stewart, according to a source. But the asking price appears to be too high at the moment, so nothing is imminent.

      Price is too high….Good!

  • Tyler Oakman

Tim Murray is dealing from a position of strength: He knows his team isn’t making the playoffs, and it is a seller’s market right now with the price being so high. He won’t get fleeced on his first deals as a GM, he’s too smart and too experienced for that.

I was surprised that Maclean put Lehner back in nets after letting 4 goals in the first period(on like 11shots I think). Maybe that’s what Maclean was talking to Lehner about after pulling him on another 2 goals(on 6shots?).

The whole team is to blame but Lehner, our goalie of the future; never gave us a chance to keep it close or even win. It would of been nice to have at least one big save. Might of even boosted the morale a little bit.
