Sabres vs. Senators- Highlights

  • MethotToMyMadness

Well lads, I listened to the entire game and Andy was on his head, which is GREAT news. He finally showed a form of himself, from the previous 2 seasons. I would expect he’ll get the next start just to see if they can ride that winning train.

Ceci sounded as though he was in control when he had to be, also good news. I fully expect they’ll let Methot heal up (is it really the flu?) from whatever is ailing him. Ceci appeared to be comfortable with Phillips. Like I said yesterday, it’s probably the best partner for him to pair with in his 1st game and any game going forward.

Ryan continues the hot streak, the payment we made for him is really paying off. Keep this up and show a good performance against LA tomorrow. I’d love to see Ottawa give them the hardest game they’ve had during this East trip they are making.

    Go Sens Go!!!

    • Tooks

He had his best shifts when not paired with CP4 but yeah, he carried the puck out to save Phillips from making mental mistakes all game long. Actually Phillips had his best game in awhile and all due to Ceci. Phillips hardly touched the puck, which is a good thing!

      Cowen who?

This is exactly the type of D-man we need, mobile, smart, physical. Keep Ceci up, trade Cowen for a 1st.

      • Senatollah

If only we could find a team who would make that deal…

        • Tooks

          Very late first?

      • Robert Lepage

I recommend patience. It takes a lot of time for defencemen to gain the experience to be proficient, reliable, and competent. Cowen’s only 22 and missed training camp.

        • Tooks

I recommend getting players that can skate and be less mistake prone, like, umm, Ceci…

          • Robert Lepage

Based on his first NHL game? Should we go back a year or so and find your posts commending Cowen’s prowess?

          • Tooks

I never liked Cowen, I was all for us getting Kadri like Murray wanted.

I get what you’re saying, its just 1 game and I agree but I didnt get the vibes I got when watching Ceci play, compared to when I watched Pageau, Cowen, Butler, Silf play they’re first game.

Ceci is very close to being NHL rdy IF he aint rdy already.

          • Sandy

Gee.. Tooks… We never would have guessed that you didn’t like Cowen,

          • Robert Lepage

Have your sentiments changed with regards to Ceci’s performance against LA?

          • Sandy

Ceci has played 3 games… in 2 of those he was very good and struggled against LA like the rest of the team did.
Offensively Ceci is NHL ready… BUT he still has to develop his defensive game.. and it will take longer than 3 games.

      • Jacques

You put Cowen in a nice package for E. Kane! Forget the 1st rounder.

        • sens23

yeah cause the Jets who have enstrom, byfuglien, bogosian, trouba and josh morrissey coming up want another dman, especially one who is underperforming for his price tag

      • NickofTime

That’s ridiculous, they are not going to trade away a 6’5″, 230 lb good young defenseman like Cowen when they have two aging UFA defensemen in Phillips & Corvo possibly leaving. Corvo for sure will not be re-signed especially when they have Ceci to replace him as Ceci is also a right shot. And Phillips who makes many more mistakes than Cowen should also not be re-signed. They have plenty of good young defensemen like Boroweicki, they don’t need #4 any more.

    • sens23

Doesnt matter how long methot is out. Ceci will have to be sent down after the next game once cowen is back from suspension and the sens have 6 active dmen again. unless the sens do the paperwork to make ceci a regular call up

  • SensChirp

Pretty strange to see Bobby Ryan play under 12 minutes. Wonder if there is a bit of an injury issue there. He wasn’t made available to the media after last night’s game either. Something to keep an eye on today.

    • spezzerman

      flu bug

      • SensChirp

That could very well be it. Also interesting that Methot missed a game with the flu, returned, and then was out again.

        • sprucesens

maclean secretly trying to bench his best players? lol, wouldn’t put it past him this year.

    • TookieIs100PercentRight

Needs to sign a new deal stat once able. If not he’s not interested in being here and needs to leave here before he becomes a locker-room cancer like Heatley was in the day. Either he’s an all-in team player or he isn’t. Avoiding the media? Dangerous stuff there. Expecting a full media presence on Saturday or we might have a problem on our hands.

  • Sicilian

I was excited to see Ceci and he didn’t disappoint. That was a fantastic NHL debut. I think he’s going to develop into a great player

    • Senatollah

He played a smart game. One thing I noticed was he was consistent in finishing his checks, especially in his own zone. He has the speed to get back in the play quickly which is a plus. I think Gryba showed why he watches most games from high above, he rarely finished his checks in his own zone.

      • Tooks

Pretty sure the slow foot speed is also a reason. Ceci is FAST!

        • SenaTHOR

Watch the highlight boys on the PK goal. Phillips could have made the play but after he stopped he waved and called Gryba over who was way further away covering a player than he was. Bad call by Phillips and Gryba gets the blame. Please waive this kid call Ceci up for good.

          • Kohlmanator

D-men are not supposed to chase a player behind the net (PK mostly). They are supposed to guard the posts. It was a terrible “switch”, if it was even attempted…

          • runningbear1974

I hate it so much when Phillips points… He takes one hand off his stick at a critical time to point about something which should be obvious…

  • Tooks

Well looks like I was right to guess a low in fans at CTC last night…ouch, 15,500 or so. That has to be the lowest this season?

    • sens88

      Nope. Columbus was lower.

      • TookieIs100PercentRight

Think last night was actually way lower. I was in the 300s and there were rows and rows and rows of empty seats. It was nuts. I could have just walked down four rows to get better seats. I’d have been shocked if there were more than 12,000 or so. I was at the CBJ game and it at least LOOKED as if there were mroe people spread throughout the arena.

      • Tooks

        Thats sad, sad news.

  • things that make me go hmmmmmm

Only CP04 and EK65 were they only skaters that played more than CC05i did last night

  • SensChirp

    From practice today…

    MacArthur-Spezza-Condra
    Conacher-Turris-Ryan
    Michalek-Smith-Zibanejad
    Greening-Pageau-Neil

    • Alcatraz

I dont mind it if you forget about the idea of top 6

Keep in mind we aren’t playing Buffalo on Saturday, a rteam we can load up and say “keep up” because we know we can beat their top line

We are playing Los Angelese, a very deep team, and one that comes at you constantly. The game after that is St. Louis another team the same way

Against those types of team we need balance, because a Greening-Smith-Neil line or a Conacher-pageau-michalek line would get crushed

      • sprucesens

If condra is not usefull in the bottom 6 to add solid play there, then he certainly shouldn’t be in the top 6 beside spezza. Holding back a spot from Hoffman, and stone at this point. Once a trade is made, hopefully, then the coach will be forced to actually give one of these guys a chance rather than benching them during a call up.
Anyways, sounds like it was an ugly win last night, but a win none the less. Ceci looked to have the dominant game we all knew he would. there is a big reason we are high on him, and a huge reason I was super excited when we drafted him. I bet if we win a cup in the next few years, he will be a huge part of the team that does it. Also, possibly the first person to play on the team that grew up completely a sens fan? Could be interesting storyline

        • Alcatraz

Condra is a good supplementary player to someone like Spezza because it allows Spezza to do more

Condra with Neil allows Neil to do more as well….which I’m not sure what that is

If for the next two games this gives us a chance to to keep up with LA and STL then I’m all for it. In my eyes its super smart

        • Alcatraz

Borowiecki grew up a sens fan no?

          • sprucesens

yeah could be, not sure. I don’t think he has a real long term place on the sens. Maybe, but not seeing a lot of room for him. Unless he is in like to take Phillips spot. Longer term the 3rd pairing could be lots of options
            methot-karlsson
            Cowen-Ceci
Phillips, gryba, wiercioch, boro, claesson, wikstrand and then likely future top picks. So it gets crowded. I think wikstrand is least likely to make the team. Maybe as the odd call up. Couple trades likely to come, maybe in the offseason. Sooner if anyone doesn’t live up to expectations.

    • boom

well, he gave Zibby a shot playing top 6…he didn’t score so screw him (we really need a sarcasm font)

  • esk

Anderson won us that game. Hopefully he keeps this up for a couple of months and we trade him when his value is high. lol

  • RUSH RLZ

Apparently Leafs are talking to Phaneuf about a 7 year 49M extension…. LOL!

    • Alcatraz

honestly i think he is an above average dman, but not great, but thats pretty much amrket value for him
They invested in him, made him their captain, play him 25 minutes a night. Cap is going up, thats his market unfortunately. Its great for us as sens fans though lol

      • TookieIs100PercentRight

WE hardly ever beat the LEafs, how is this good for us?

        • Alcatraz

That they will have a large percentage of their cap tied up in Phaneuf, Clarkson, Kessle and Bozak lol. Kessle being the only real standout deserving of 5+

    • esk

with the cap going up in the next few years..close to 100 mill..you are going to see stamkos, toews etc get 12-14mill contracts. So could be a fair deal for the leafs..

      • aegiszx

Yeah but you should see how much money other sports prime athletes get like Messi, Kobe, Jeter, Manning, Tiger Woods, etc.

Sid makes 12M on average, but compare that to like LeBron or Brady lol

    • TookieIs100PercentRight

Dion would get 7 mil on the free market, he’s one of their best 5 v 5 dmen. The Leafs have not allowed a hwole lot of 5 v 5 goals this season and he’s a reason for that.
Players will keep getting more and more expensive. So … LOL! all you want but if Melnyk doesn’t stop being CHEAP we are going to be also-rans for some time.

      • boom

Yeah, we should be like the leafs and sign guys like:

Liles – plays mostly in the minors because of other stupid signings
        Connoly – bought-out
Tucker – yes, Darcy Tucker, still on payroll?
        Armstrong – bought-out
Komisarek – yeah, he was good
        Clarkson – 5.25 for 6 points and a minus 3, so far.

Yeah, that;s the way to build a team…

        • Tooks

Well we havent done much better Boom…
Cowen – Serious bust potential, signed for 3+Mil for 3-4 years…ouch.
          MM9 – Earning team high salary…wtf?
Butler – yes, Bobby butler, still on payroll?
          Greening/Condra – Terrible signings…
          Saprikin/Filatov/Cheechoo…

Everyteam has black marks, we are no different.

          • boom

fair enough Tooks, but at least ours are still playing for us, and have a chance of being players (don’t get me started on greening and condra, though).
The ones I listed for the laffs, except Clarkson, have all “left the building” and the leafs had to pay them to leave…
I don’t say the Sens haven’t made mistakes but the suggestion that the leafs have been a good example of how to run a team is laughable.
They, along with the Flyers and Rangers have traditionally been prime examples of how NOT TO run a team…
Sadly, however, despite their recent woes, I think they are on the right track now…sad…

  • Dante

Anything further to the fight that broke out between Conacher and Neil at practice?

    • Tooks

Conacher pissed off the wrong guy…

    • my2sens

      Conacher went to Mr. Lube.

    • SensChirp

Saw video of the incident on CBC news. Couple stick slashes and nothing more, based on what I saw.

  • karlssens

LOL.. Russian Olympic team is picking it’s roster from 1/2 the NHL, and 1/2 the KHL according to the director of operations.. Now a three team race between Canada USA and Sweden.

    • Alcatraz

Considering its being lpayed in Russia I could see this actually working in their favor
That’s 1/2 of a team already adjusted to time zone and playing conditions. Used to large ice surface, and used to Russia.
I still think Russia challenges for a medal along with Canada, USA, Sweden, Slovakia and Switzerland

      • Tooks

        LATVIA!!

      • MethotToMyMadness

The Swiss have been so impressive as a club the last few years, really enjoy watching them since they play such a Canadian Style.

    • MikeS

Kolvalchuk plays in in the KHL, just saying

      • MikeS

Anyways they only have 10-11 skaters in the nhl that I would want anyways, some good goalies as well

  • Sandy

I get that Neil is feisty and so is Conacher. But Neil is now an alternate captain and should not be punching out players in practice… Hope Phillips is okay to go especially if Methot is still out.
The Sens played LA back in Oct and lost in OT on a PP goal. If they can get a point out of tomorrow’s game… that would be awesome…
Andy is key… He has to be excellent..

    • SensChirp

I watched it and unless the clip didn’t show the whole incident, there was no punch thrown. Couple stick slashes and that was it.

      • PraiseAlfie11

I hope you see this, as you would probably remember the last time neil had a scrap in a practice…do you remember when it was and the eventual outcome of the season?

      • PraiseAlfie11

        Found it…january 2008 vs. Redden.

  • Millennium

So Mac’s reasoning for limiting Ryan’s ice time was to roll 4 lines and he doesn’t play PK. I don’t really buy that as a reason to limit a guy like Bobby Ryan to near team-worst TOI.

Mac continues to make the entire fanbase scratch their head in puzzlement.

    • Sandy

It could be something else entirely.. that he doesn’t want made public…

      • Millennium

Could be, although Ryan’s response was something along the lines of “I felt like I must have kicked Mac’s dog or something” which suggests he doesn’t agree nor understand the limitation.

  • MethotToMyMadness

So Phillips left limping, that means Ceci may be hanging around when Methot and Cowen get back. It’s nice, I really want to see him get a few good NHL caliber games in before he goes back to the A and continues his stride.

    • Millennium

Phillips said he was fine later on. But Ceci is likely to play Saturday anyways.

  • Tim

BSens down 3-2 after 2. Boro/Grant the goals.
    Team is really struggling anymore

  • Tim

Lost to the worst team in the league…

  • Jacques

If you want to watch a Sens goalie of the future check Sportsnet – Chris Driedger in nets. Has a shutout going in the 3rd. Big Goalie and very calm in nets. moves very well. This kid is REAL good. 2-0 Calgary over Medecine hat right now.

    • Jacques

      Driedger.959 last 10 games.

      • MikeS

You are really giving up on Lehner already? What is wrong with you?

        • aegiszx

LOL typical diehards, always out with the old, in with the new…

          • MikeS

He isnt a vezina winner yet so hes not good enough for my team!

        • Jacques

Dumbass I said a sens goalie of the future not THE sens goalie of the future. You’re a dimwit. You don’t know the prospects in our system.

  • 01011111011101111010101010101

    yet ANOTHER afternoon game today
this schedule is killing the team

    • markuki111

What is wrong with afternoon games? I Love them!

      • esk

must suck for the kings though… think there three hours back

        • MikeS

yep, its like a 11am game for them. If sens dont have the jump in the first something is wrong

  • MikeS

If sens win today, do you think ceci has made the team?
