Ryan, Senators Topple Bruins- Highlights

  • Luc Wolfe

I really enjoyed the crowd on its feet while Anderson was making those saves in the last minute.

  • karlssens

I’ll take the win! Let’s hope we can get a bit of a streak going on here.. Intereating in the last thread to see the split between those who want to trade spezza and those who don’t. Personally, I would love to trade him, as now I don’t think he’s the right captain to have. Like everyone else before the season, I felt that spezza deserved it. However, with his lack of work ethic and his inconsistencies I don’t think he makes a great captain on the ice. A guy like Turris or MacArthur would make a great captains in terms of on ice play. Very consistent, works hard, plays 200 ft etc. Alas, I do not believe the organization will ever move him, but I’ve been surprised before…

    • SensChirp

Give the guy a chance, for crying out loud.

If the guy who wears the “C” makes that big a difference to the rest of the team’s on ice performance, they are in bigger trouble than we realize. He is respected by his teammates and is a leader off the ice. Not only was he the right choice, he was the only choice.

      • karlssens

SC, I assume you have worked in a business organization before.. Let me break this down.

If the employees notice their boss/ manager isn’t meeting deadlines, punching in at the proper time, or staying late to get tasks done why should they? A lazy/ ineffective leader has more of a rub off effect than you would think. There are plenty of examples around the NHL.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy, and I sincerely hope he turns it around. He’s the face of the franchise. But don’t play him if he’s going to be lazy and ineffective.

        • SensChirp

Too early in the morning to be rolling my eyes so aggressively. Feeling a little dizzy.

Not sure it’s accurate to label Spezza as lazy. Plays a high risk game but he’s not lazy.

Also, like I said- If this team is full of guys that change the way they play because of this perception the Captain isn’t giving his all, they are in big trouble.

          • karlssens

No offense, you act like you know this team so much better than everyone, but you’re running a blog… You do not know for sure if this team respects spezza behind closed doors, and you do not know for sure if he is lazy or injured. I can understand the emotional attachment to spezz (hell he’s been the face of the franchise for so long) but he needs to give more on the ice when he plays. As I said, I hope he turns it around, he’s a hell of a player. I’d rather him sit out a month and get healthy than play injured or banged up and hurt this team.

          • PraiseAlfie11

            Karlssens,

Not sure how long you’ve been around here, but the last person who questioned Chirp’s insider knowledge of the team was humilated in amazing fashion where Chirp broke his silence and called the fisher trade before anyone else to prove a point.

True, Chirp may be running a blog, but he has great insight and definitely know people in the know.

As for the state of the room, nobody knows; if they do and they talk, they won’t be in a position to know ever again.

          • karlssens

I’ve been around a few years. I appreciate Senschirps blog, hard work, and insight (this is why I keep coming back). However, I was just reminding him that he does indeed run a blog, and that sometimes the condescending attitude isn’t necessary. A blog can become a business, but not if people are worried about getting called out all the time. Anyway… Go sens go…

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I have never found Chirp to be condescending at all….and we haven’t always agreed.

          • PraiseAlfie11

I honestly didnt see his remarks as “condescending”. In *my* opinion, Spezza is playing hurt.

I see you as a good guy around here and I sure don’t think anyone was being “called out”.

            Have a good football sunday!

          • mkjr

It’s nice to see you over here PraiseAlfie11. I was kicked of the Ottawa sun chat boards last year after mine and Puckoffs accounts were hacked. He was allowed to stay and I haven’t been able to get back on, not sure if you remember, a guy by the name of Milton55 popped up last year on the Sun boards just being a total douche’. He hacked mine and PuckOffs accounts and had some weird conversation using our accounts and since then I haven’t been allowed back on. I still check in to read the comments, not much has changed, trolls have taken over the board. Still get a kick out of Hutyoo’s bizarre comments as well as ctd 2.0′s Lol.
Have a great football Sunday as well….Go Cowboys Go!
P.S. If you chat with PuckOff or Cliff Cotton tell them to head over here.

          • Aaron 2.0

Saying you’re “not sure” if you would call Spezza lazy isn’t exactly a strong defense of him, Chirp. I personally think he has little to 0 hockey smarts on the defensive end. That’s sufficiently masked when Spezza plays the way he did 2 years ago, where his line controls the play. I hope he gets back to his old self. But, i’m sure you can understand the conversation. If back injuries have done this to him, we stand to lose a lot by not realizing it before he has no value. On the other hand, another off-season of training might do him wonders. I don’t pretend to know what the right call with him is. But, you have to admit there are a lot of question marks surrounding him right now.

      • KJ

        Well said!!

      • mkjr

I agree , if professional athletes can’t motivate themselves, then maybe they should re-evaluate their profession. But, I’m still not sold on Spezza as captain, I still think Methot should have got the “C”, even though he hasn’t been here that long…I think he shows excellent leadership skills.

      • Sandy

        Thank you for that Chirp…

      • luckan20

        Very well said.

  • Deadly

Chirp, you are right about the last 2 minutes. Could hardly watch, was jumping around like crazy. Hoping for an empty netter but you kinda need possession for that to happen. Then as I about to really enjoy the moment…Subban was on..thank heavens he didn’t score.

  • ZaZa

And the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde saga continues… Great win lastnight but we’ll never know which team is gonna show up and play.

  • Floridasensfan

Spezza is going nowhere first off he has a no trade clause so unless he wants to go forget it.

End of story enjoy the wins when they come

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Chip…not going to get started on the trade Spezza crap(although I am starting to support it slightly more)….but do you think he is actually hurt, or was that the Sens nice way of saying “wake the fuck up…we are going to claim you are hurt but watch from the press box and pick it up”?

    • SensChirp

He was hurt. Not sure he has ever really been 100% actually.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Fair enough, just seems like a odd game to sit him if it has just been a nagging injury. I mean really, who thinks OK we just got pumped 5-0 lets sit our number 1 center for this game.

Maybe he was hurt, but I honestly think it was partially an attempt at a wake-up call. If he isn’t back next game I may rethink that…but who knows.

SO it only takes me two posts and I will casually get to the trade spezza(but not saying do it)….but if there is always the excuse(and there has been lately) that he isn’t 100%, then really if we can get close to fair value for him, wouldn’t you think that it would at least be something that Murray would explore?

Personally judging by the coo coos that wanted anyone and their dog to be named captain over him, I do not suspect that there would be significant backlash from the fan-base if he was moved…don’t necessarily think they would gain anything either, as most of the people who complained about the choice aren’t exactly educated fans, so doubt they are supporting the team that much either way.

      • CUP 2014-15

Agree this has been my concern as well. I have been a fan of this team since before Spezz arrived and although he has always been prone to unreal giveaways he has also been an offensive machine over the years. We’re now watching what I believe to be an injured player, playing through something that will not get worse but is not getting better. He’s a top end talent and needs to sit out to heal if this is the case.

  • Luc Wolfe

Please stop with trading Spezza, their isn’t soo many 1 point player in the league, and we all did the same thing when Alfredsson started to be captain, The guy is doing just fined, Murray is being handcuffed and Melnyk is a cheap owner that I started to dislike (I got nothing towards him personally, but I would want him to leave this city before the team gets destroyed.)

  • Andrews theory

On a bright note Ceci is really showing the promise that we all hoped he would… Picture this guy in a few years with a bit more mass and he’s going to be one hell of a two way defender.

Awesome to see Conacher putting up some consistent points over the last 10 games. Way too early to give up on a kid that dominated the AHL and was an early favorite for the Calder.

More ice time for Ryan and Zibanejad…

    Lastly;
I’ve never advocated trading Spezza but I’ve also never been against it. It really would have to depend on the return especially in a year where we have no first rounder. Either way, he needs to get healthy or significantly pick up his game. It’s not even close to where it needs to be

    • FistsofNeil25

Yeah I agree about Spezza. So many people are overly sensitive about this topic. Some people get way too attached to the players on this team. I learned that lesson the hard way when we dealt Fisher and more recently with the departure of Alfie. I’ve also never been for or against trading Spezza, but I’m really starting to wonder if trading him is in the long-term best interest of the organization.

It’s not about his leadership abilities or anything like that. Like Chirp said below he was the ONLY real choice for the captaincy. After all, 40 games is really not enough to judge whether he will be a good captain or not. It’s really about what he has left in the tank. I’m pretty sure everyone can agree that he’s no where close to the player he was in the 2011-2012 season or before that. He’s certainly lost a step and is more comfortable than ever just to be a perimeter player who doesn’t battle or willingly engage in any kind of physical element of the game.

The biggest argument for not trading Spezza is that top line point-per-game centers don’t grow on trees. This is a very true statement, but we have to ask ourselves if he truly is a top line point-per-game center anymore or if he ever will be again. Like it or not, it’s a question that Bryan Murray will ask himself before it’s time to either re-sign him, trade him, or let him go as a free agent.

    • FistsofNeil25

Also, I can’t believe that Ceci is showing this kind of promise so early in his career. At 20 years old it really is quite remarkable. He’s looking like a steal at the 15th overall pick. As brilliant as Karlsson is, Ceci may end up being our #1 defenseman some day. What a one-two punch Ceci and Karlsson could become.

I remember Brian Kilrea saying that Ceci is very comparable to Drew Doughty and has similar potential. I remember laughing at the time I heard that but man, Kilrea wasn’t joking. Ceci isn’t quite as physical as Doughty but he has lots of time to add that element to his game. He’s going to be a great player that’s for sure.

      • CUP 2014-15

We can only hope, but man are you right, he’s better then I thought he would be at this stage. If he puts on some lbs and can play in all three zones then we could add that third D who can move the puck otherwise I think 2 is the max. In regards to Killer, I remember that comment being if you like DD your going to love CC. I thought it was a former coach loving his players, but NOOOOOO This kid seems to be the real deal.

        • FistsofNeil25

Yeah! That’s exactly what Killer’s comment was. I hope we aren’t getting ahead of ourselves here. It’s just fun to get excited about young talent like him.

          • CUP 2014-15

It sure as hell looks like he is the real deal, Being only 20 we know he still has his man strength to come and if he rounds out around 225 he could be beast. The kid can Skate, shoot, pass and is responsible in the D Zone, just gets knocked off the puck and looses battles down low but holy F#@k he’s just turned 20.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

No word of a lie, Ceci is QUICKLY becoming among my favorite players….right up there with Ryan and Karlsson

        • FistsofNeil25

Yeah me too. Same with DJ ZBad and Turris. Any one of Karlsson, Ryan, Ceci, Turris, and Zibanejad could be my favorite player on any given night lol I think it’s a pretty good young core to build around. I sure hope we’ll be able to re-sign Bobby.

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

            I have a confession…Ryan won’t resign, I bought his jersey(I am shocked he hasn’t been moved yet…have a horrible track record)

          • CUP 2014-15

Stop thinking of yourself and give the Sweater to someone you like.. allot.

          • mkjr

I have to agree , Ryan wants to go to Philly. With the way Mac is cutting his ice time he probably feels the same way he did in Anaheim. I’d love Bobby to resign with us ….but I don’t see it happening unless things change.

          • JAY79

I love how you guys are making comments like this as if you can read his mind or know him personally and he’s confided in you lol… Just yesterday I read an article where he comments on how everyone in the room likes each other and loves playing together.

      • sell the team Eugene

Ottawa was VERY glad to get CC05 in the draft.
Even Sourpuss Tim Murray did a happy dance.

  • FistsofNeil25

Great game last night. All four lines were really rolling. Even Kassian looked pretty good lol Corvo was pretty off all night though and Karlsson didnèt have a good game by his standards but everyone else was pretty strong.

Anderson played a good game between the pipes but that third goal by Boston is one that he can’t allow to beat him. He made some great saves late in the third period though to hold on for the win.

I knew people would come on here and say we’re a better team without Spezza and Phillips after we won one game without them. I find that stuff so hilarious. It was one game guys, it doesn’t mean we’re a better team without them. That’s a pretty small sample size isn’t it? At the same time though neither one of them appeared to be missed.

It would be interesting to see if one or both of them would are good to go by monday. Will Maclean stick with the winning line-up?

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I am by no means on paper saying that we are better without Spezza(although that can’t be decided until you know what our return would be)….but it is becoming increasingly difficult to argue with results(and no word of a lie I am a huge fan of his….my old Jersey was a Spezza until it fell apart)

      • sell the team Eugene

… falling apart like No Back Spezza himself ?

Seriously, I think JS19 has about 1 GOOD season left in him.
It won’t surprise me if he’s traded to a contender at the deadline.
It also won’t surprise how little Ottawa gets for him.

        • Andrews theory

          What about St. Louis?

Dealt with them in the past and if they are going to make a push they may want to add an offensive weapon

Any chance we can pry tarasenko loose?

          • CUP 2014-15

I like the way your thinking, and the Turris trade comes in to play again.

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Not much else I want there though, and we all know how the Sens are with Russians.

      • Jacques

To me, Spezza is the big problem with this team? I used to really lovetheguy but he’s not the same. If he’s out longer we’ll really see the difference. If I was Murray I’dbe looking to move him.

    • CUP 2014-15

Well said but I am hoping he takes out Corvo for Gryba.

      • FistsofNeil25

        Same.

        • CUP 2014-15

Do either of you think an NHL team can truly win against teams with power forwards when your D doesn’t hit, clear the front and loose battles down low? I am not sure if it’s me being old and love ‘old time hockey” from the D. I enjoy wide open play but I have to say I love the way Gryba hurts people when he hits, he drives them to the outside. Not that it’s Gryba, it’s toughness I believe we need on the back end. What are your opinions on having 3 or 4 flash-dash no smash D. Just wondering

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

We were both agreed that he should be in…

          • CUP 2014-15

I get that, just wondering about opinions on D make-up of any NHL team

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I think you need a mix these days…the forwards are just too damn quick and mobile these days that a group full of bruisers won’t be able to catch them…but if you have a team of all Karlssons you will get the shit kicked out of you as well, todays NHL is all about balance across all of your lines imho.

          • CUP 2014-15

I get that and when you look at the top teams they all have four D that can work the PK and clear the front. The teams lucky enough to have three D that can skate have a Doughty type in the line-up, this is part of the reason I think we need four D that can actually play D. Just my opinion but I hate seeing 3 or 4 that are lost in the D Zone and out muscled all night. Scares the hell out of me to see Karl, CC, Corvo or Patty killing penalties. With 2 minutes remaining last night they combined for one hit (Karl). They ended up a combined 3 hits

          • FistsofNeil25

I don’t think you should read too much into how many hits our defense or team has. Especially in the last two minutes last night when we were on the pk. The very last thing the pk guys should be doing is running around looking for hits and getting themselves out of position.

Also, when I see that our team has a high number of hits, it’s not a good thing. It generally means that the opposition is playing with the puck more than the Sens are. Look at Chicago for example. I don’t know this for sure but I imagine that they are a team with the fewest amount of hits. They’re a puck possession team, and a lot of that stems from their mobile defense and how well they can move the puck up ice to their talented forwards.

          • CUP 2014-15

Sorry you misses the time frame, they had 1, one hit between them with 2 min. left then moved it to 3. It was the last two min. where they tripled the number. So the PK thing does not apply. They had one hit combined through 58 min. I will get back to you on the hit totals but I know Boston and LA are near the top of the league as for Chicago I will check.

          • FistsofNeil25

I don’t think there is an answer to that. I think it’s all about having the right mix of players, not necessarily certain types of players. I do think it’s important to be a tough team to play against and having guys like Gryba is certainly a key, but at the same time the NHL game is becoming more and more about mobility and speed.

I don’t think it’s a good thing to have too many puck movers or too many shutdown guys. You have to have a healthy balance of both in today’s game. I’d say the most valuable defenders these days are the ones that can play at both ends of the rink. Not the one-dimensional puck movers or the one-dimensional shut down guys.

I think Ceci has the potential to become a great two-way defenseman, similar to Doughty, Pietrangelo, Keith, Seabrook, Kronwall, Suter, McDonagh etc

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I love that our answers were all most identical hahaha

          • SenaTHOR

I think that 62 could play as a solid shutdown guy on any team with active defensive forwards.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Wont argue with that…I seriously think Gryba is the one that will be traded though, there is NO reason why he sits so often.

      • mkjr

I like Gryba as well, not sure what’s happened to Cowen this year but I’m hoping he can return to the form he has 2yrs ago.

  • sell the team Eugene

Despite his bizarre penalty at the end of last night’s game Zack Smith has been
playing a lot better lately – reminds me of his game before the concussion.

I suspect his name will start popping up in trade rumours as the trade deadline approaches (Hello – Chicago calling)

    • peetypuck

Zack has four game-winning goals so far this year. Most on the Sens. Last night, his goal that made it 3-1 almost stood up as another game-winner.

      • mkjr

        peety!!!! Good to see you!

        • peetypuck

Great to see you too. Don’t you miss the trolls from the Sun? LOL

          • mkjr

Not sure if you read my reply to PraiseAlfie11…but it’s become a shit show over there. As I said to PA11, I still check in to read the ridiculous comments of hutyoo and ctd 2.0 and the others. Lol!

          • SENSsmile

Hi guys! I’ve also moved away from the Sun’s crappy comment boards. Don’t miss them one bit. In the end, the trolls have won.

          • mkjr

Hey SENSsmile! Glad you came over, you’re right ..the trolls won!

  • PraiseAlfie11

    Ok…how is conacher a +6???

  • SenaTHOR

The difference in the game was Spezza out not getting -2 and Chara and Seidn burg out for Boston.

  • son of a Diefenbaker

when JS19 plays it’s “Spezza and the Jasonettes”
when he’s not playing it’s “the pesky Ottawa Senators”

  • SenaTHOR

I think Gryba will be traded. I think Murray probably wants too much. Trade him for a pick and move on. It’s not really fair to him and the more he gets screwed with the more he wants out. If he isn’t in their plans trade him to a needy team for a fourth.

    • CUP 2014-15

I think they may be changing their thinking on him as of late. We got a good look at him with MM, the last time Cowen was playing well, he was playing with Gryba and keeping his game simple, it’s gotta be tough playing D with Karl. I have been screaming to trade or waive him for weeks but before saying good bye to a player I like, hoping they are looking to him as a shutdown guy with one of those two. Just dreaming, but man what else do they want from him. Play his ass, there that felt better.

      • mkjr

I really hope they don’t trade Gryba…I like what he does/can bring to the back end. What are your thoughts on letting Dave Cameron go at the end of the season? I think it’s a failed experiment, I still blame him for the WJ collapse. Melnyk , sometimes reminds me of Jerry Jones( just not as much money) as in , the fact that he tends to interfere with the team too much..i.e. hiring his buddy Cameron. But I do like Mac and Mark Reed. Think we should find a way to bring up Luke Richardson before we lose him to a head coaching job somewhere else.

        • CUP 2014-15

I am with you on Gryba. I hate to fire assistant coaches, it always seems like you don’t want to make the big move. That being said, I think your right in this case, Just even think of Luke with these guys. His stories of coaching in Bingo are becoming well known. Cowick talked about him in full gear at practice. He could help the young D for sure. I am with you.

          • mkjr

But alas, will Melnyk make the right move?? This team has so much potential but is failing for some reason. Luke would be a GREAT addition. I’ve been a big fan of Murray’s because of what he ultimately accomplished with the building of Detroit and Anaheim, but I believe it’s time to move on…but again will Melnyk make the right/tough move and think of the good of the team? Think of what a Stanley cup would do for Ottawa/ the franchise/ attendance/ bottom dollar? it’s just a thought.

        • Sandy

I would let both Reeds & Cameron go. Richardson comes up and replaces Reeds to work with the D… and a vet NHL asst coach comes in to work on special teams to replace Cameron…

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

    Bruce Garrioch ‏@SunGarrioch1h
Craig Anderson tomorrow. Spezza and Phillips won’t play

    • mkjr

Are they hurt? Don’t think anything was written about injuries to them.

      • Sensturion

I think Philips took a Boychuk or Chara shot to the ankle on Friday. As for Spezza, who knows…

        • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I honestly think it is a nice way of healthy scratching him

          • mkjr

I think you’re right…Mac should have sent the message a long time ago. I like Spezza, in the right role. BM had him playing lights out back in 07. He just seems indifferent at times.

      • CUP 2014-15

read foot for Philly, don’t know about Spezz but Mac said it was not related to the back or groin from camp.

        • mkjr

Thanks, I’d like to see the ” Big Rig” stay…but only as a 5/6 guy, not the top 4 role he’s been forced to play. I like his leadership and stability, just not mobile enough anymore. My pairings would be
          Methot – Karlsson
          Gryba – Cowen
          Ceci – Phillips
          Boro – insert name.

  • luckan20

Like I said in the GDT, Ottawa shouldn’t rush in taking Zotto. All we need is consistency and wins will come. We have to score 4 or more to win, which is not an ideal case for every game; therefore, we need to play solid defensively and for the sake of the fans, please lower the minors taken.
We are losing momentum by taking too many minors.

    • CUP 2014-15

      Amen brother !!!!!! agree

    • mkjr

I think we should leave Del Zotto alone. We have enough puck moving D, lets let the young guys gain some experience.

  • Roar…

Jason Spezza is a great player. Nobody is disputing that. All anyone is saying is hey he’s now on the wrong side of 30, he’s got consistent injury issues and maybe we should deal him before those slow him down to the point of having no value.

His contract can be moved – making only 4M real dollars. That’s most likely the biggest sticking point for Ottawa. He’s a bargain at that price. I just think it’s a gamble to keep him at this point. Sell high. If we got a 25 or younger potentially 55+ point 200 foot winger who is strong at both ends of the ice + a pick that is a good way to go.

Part of this deal is that I’m confident in Zibanejad & Turris at center. They are 200 foot players and elite skaters. We saw it last night as they both ran all over a depleted Boston team. A team is constructed to only have two top center roles. Zibanejad can play the wing sure, but he looks capable of controlling a game the way Alfie could when he plays the middle. If Turris is a 60+ point 2nd line center and Zibanejad is a 70 point Bergeron style 1st line center then should we keep Spezza?

    • CUP 2014-15

Assuming your correct with him not being able to return to form of two seasons ago then the answer should be NO, we don’t keep him. We sell high like you said but I think we will get more for him then some believe. He’s still a number one centre and they don’t become available very often.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I would put him with his injuries as an amazing 1b…Hell that is essentially what he has become here.

I’m not certain what I would expect as return for him,

        • Jacques

          1b maybe.

        • CUP 2014-15

I don’t know who they would look to trade with but I would bet it’s in the West and we need a 1st and a top six along with a prospect to start.

      • Roar…

The real challenge is finding a team that has:
        A) The Assets Ottawa Wants
        B) Enough Cap space to get him and re-sign him
        C) Is at the right point as a team where acquiring him makes sense

        Hornqvist + Josi
        Vanek + Young D Prospect
        Hagelin + Del Zotto + 2nd
        Boedker + Morris
Boedker + Klesla (dump) + Stone
        Oshie
Wheeler OR Ladd (Ottawa adds Prince OR Puempel)

        • CUP 2014-15

I would look to the Wild side and ask for Neiderreider, prospect Tyler Gravac and 1st this year

    • mkjr

Agree, My fear is, we’ll lose him for nothing. I don’t think he’ll resign/nor wants to with us. We should get what we can now, and make an offer to BR with the premise of him /MacArthur and Turris being the OFFICAIL 1st line. I still wish we would have signed Brendan Morrow, if only for his leadership skills.

  • luckan20

Whom are we planning to call for Jason Spezza ????

  • Jacques

Rumor out there that Toronto maybe looking at trading Kadri, haha. Oh they need help at center, is what they’re saying…….

    • karlssens

      Offer Cowen? Lol JK!

    • sell the team Eugene

Spezza for Kadri straight up – I’m not joking

      • CUP 2014-15

not a chance they can keep the virus and they don’t have the cap

        • Jacques

Toronto would have to move Liles first. Then it could work!

      • SuckitPhaneuf

        Dont be stupid

  • karlssens

As much as we talk about spezza getting traded and us getting a sweet package for him, I can’t see the organization ever doing that after the Alfie situation.

  • NickofTime

BM should trade Condra & Corvo for picks or pucks, eventually I hope Schneider will replace Conacher.

Greening – Spezza – Stone – Stone may be the missing link to jell with Spezza
MacArthur – Turris – Ryan – three scoring lines would be very helpful to this line

Conacher – Zibanejad – Michalek – played very well together last night
    Z. Smith – Grant – Neil/Kassian – Kassian replaces Conacher against tougher teams

Cowen – Karlsson – Cowen continues to play better & Karlsson needs to smarten up
Wiercioch – Ceci – played very well together & both can move the puck
Methot – Gryba/Phillips – Phillips is the 7th defenceman on my team

Lehner – Anderson – Lehner is more reliable than Anderson so far this season

  • Tony

Holy S**t… Looks like Edmonton is making a move this afternoon

    • Tony

Not sure with who, but seems to be lots of commotion in the offices

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

??? Can’t find much of anything where are you getting this?

    • Deadly

      Explain…svp.

      • Tony

Office talk at Rexall place… at first someone suspected it was with the Sens but looks like it may be Philly… they say some back and fourth is going on…

        • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

So you work at Rexall place?

          • Tony

Two contacts a brother inlaw and a friend

          • Tony

both are giving the same story…

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

            Interesting

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Marcus Högberg is a good goalie prospect

    • karlssens

Hogberg- Lehner. Not to mention brassard and dreider. We will be able to trade one for an offensive piece down the road.

      • Sensnation

Unless they all turn into superstar prospects, the goalie trade market is always weak and hard to get anything of value back. The Varlamov type deals are very few and far between.

  • karlssens

Is there a deal to be had between Ottawa and Edmonton??

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

There could be…I have almost thought it was inevitable for a while.

      • karlssens

I agree.. They have a plethora of offensive talent I would love to take a stab at.

    • Tony

They have interest in Cowen, Spezza, Zibby, and Smith, but we know management will not trade Zibby or Spezza… as for Cowen, from what I hear they value him less then what they did at the start of the season, but they’ll take him at a discounted price him (and I hope we dont trade him for spare parts)… Smith might be the piece going their way if we get anything decent…

      • Jacques

They would trade Spezza trust me!

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Edmonton I suspect would want any of Smith, Neil, Spezza, Gryba, Cowen, Condra, Greening, Anderson, maybe Phillips

Strictly came up with the list off of the top of my head based on my perceived needs for them

    • Tony

Seems there’s a good relationship between both clubs… looks like the whole Heatley fiasco got both club pretty close (Hatred for Heatley LOL)

  • Andrews theory

Would you trade Schultz for Cowen?

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

No but I would look at Klefbom…Never see it happening though.

    • Tony

My opinion… hold off on trading Cowen… trade when value is high, not low.

      • Roar…

Exactly. Cowen is improving. He’s young. He’s only going to get better. It’s preposterous to trade a guy his age who is coming off missing a full season of hockey from a surgery that Ed Jovo said takes at least a year of hockey to feel normal again. Sell high. Keep him and watch him become a monster.

  • Tony

Hearing that the talks may in fact be with Philly and centring around Eberle… Dang… its no secret I always wanted him here…

    • Andrews theory

He’s clutch but far from complete..

If I’m Edmonton I’m asking for Simmonds as a starting point

      • Tony

Yeah fun guy to watch too… was lucky to see a couple of games in Edmonton this season

    • sprucesens

Murray better be in on talks if eberle is on the move.

    • sprucesens

Keep us up to date if you hear anything tony, as no other sites have any info about this

      • Tony

Will probably hear more tomorrow if nothing happens tonight (both stoped working at 4pm Edmonton time)

As for Eberle to Ottawa… as much as I want to believe it can happen, I think it would be either too complicated or too expensive and that if we had an offer with the right mix for both teams it would have happened by now… from what I hear Edmonton and Ottawa had many talks in the past year, cant think that all of a sudden a trade for Eberle would just magically happen.

  • Tony

    Chirp… anything from your contacts?

    • SensChirp

Nothing new today. Sounds like the Del Zotto discussions are in a bit of a holding pattern. Suspect the Senators know what it would take to get a deal done and are hesitating.

    • SensChirp

Ah sorry, I see this was in reference to a potential deal with Edmonton. Nope, nothing on my end. Keep us in the loop though.

  • SuckitPhaneuf

Spezza is on the wrong side of 30
Trade him to edmonton for Eberle and a second
Then make Ryan your captain and sign him for 8 years
    Macarthur Turris Ryan
    Lazar Eberle Zibby
    Pageau Smith Greening
    Neil Conacher Condra

    • Jacques

Sens would have to send a pick with Spezza!

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Tend to agree… But I do like those lines.

You still have some depth too.. Puempel, Hoffman, stone, Peterson, prince, da Costa, grant, Maidens(who I think is a serious darkhorse due to injuries but has talent),

        • Deadly

Maidens is still out and will probably not return to hockey. Hopefully he will but doubt it.

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

            Yeah I agree….really a shame.

    • HarvardYaleAndPrincetonMan

Spezza would never wave his no trade contract to go to Edmonton
(a top contender this year ? – a strong maybe)

      • SensChirp

With his health concerns and significant cap hit, I really don’t think anyone is lining up to take on Spezza at this point in the season.

  • Andersonfan41

I looked at the standings the Senators are just 1 point back from
the 8th spot in the east and four points back from seventh.
Will eighth seed in the conference get you in the
    playoffs?

    • Sensturion

Nope. The bottom 8 teams are fighting for 2 spots, conference doesn’t matter.

  • SensChirp

    On Oilers discussion mentioned below-

I do know the Oilers had a very serious interest in Colin Greening a few weeks back but were asking for too much in return.

    • FistsofNeil25

Wait… We were asking for too much in return for Greening? Really…?

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

My thoughts exactly….what the hell were we expecting for strictly him?!?!

I mean if we could combine Conachers snarkiness with Greenings size and strength we would have our Lucic.

    • sprucesens

Yeah, I would think a mid level pick would get it done,no? Shed salary and make room for stone or something else. Maybe hemsky was the asking price?

  • Bryan

Just a thought maybe spezza should be moved to the wing and play the old heatly role have zbad get the blue line drop pass and use that slapper in the right situation.

    • runningbear1974

I was just thinking this too… We need scoring wingers… Spezza could do that… Let him take faceoffs too, because he’s good at that… It’s worth thinking about…

  • Bryan

The reasoning is Spezza has lost half a step and can not keep up on the back check with all the young guys but still an elite player just has to change positions.

    • SensChirp

8th in the league on draws.

      • Fanator

        -15

      • Fanator

and with the way players get thrown out of the circle he would still get his draws.

  • Fanator

    second line spezza pageau zbad

    • runningbear1974

have to think zbad is 2nd line centre…

  • Deadly

Must be an easy game when a player who has played centre his entire career could switch to wing at the NHL level.
To be honest I thought it would be more challenging.

    • Fanator

Most centers can play wing, if I am not mistaken Bobby played wing.

  • Deadly

And do it playing with two rookies with a combined experience of how many games?

    • Fanator

Can not be any worse than playing with micalek at -19. Already have one rookie who is playing better than both of them in the first place.
Also prefer a mistake from a rookie than a 10+ year pro.

      • Jacques

Feeling sorry for Michalek having to play with Spezza!

        • Colin

Seriously? Bashing Spezza is one thing, but that is pretty low.

          • Jacques

Listen people bash Michalek but hell him skating on 2 bum knees is giving us a lot more than Jason the Floater. If Spezza is hurt he should stay away from the rink. HIs poor wingers have to skate around like demons while he floats back towards the defensive zone than rarely lifts a finger to help. Show real leadership Jason stay away till you’re healthy to play! Or wait till you’re traded(doubt anyone would want him), best we’d get would be one player and a pick(we won’t get a Bobby Ryan deal for him).

          • Colin

All I can say is that I am very happy that you are not the GM.

  • Andrews theory

Anybody see how ridiculous the refs uniforms are for the Spengler cup?

Instead of the typical stripes their shirts have cow spots with a picture of a cow…

    Absolutely priceless!

    • sben

      this is insanity

  • Sandy

Off topic…but anyone else fearing for the safety of the athletes going to the Sochi Olympics after the suicide bombing today at the train station in Russia today?

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I would hate to be an athlete this year… This bombing (although could happen anywhere), the anti Gay stuff going on makes it rather uncomfortable as well.

      • Sandy

It’s not about the gays — this is by the Chechnyn (sp?) militants who have said they will try to ‘derail’ the Sochi games.. They should be very concerned, Two suicide bombings in 2 days in, what will be, the travel hub for the Olympics,

  • SenaTHOR

Spezza is a fire sale trade. You don’t need to worry, no one in the right mind is giving much for weak defensive forward who coasts and gives away the puck regularly. Throw in his back problem and Spezza doesn’t get anything close to what he’s paid.

  • karlssens

Game day blog cocked and ready haha?? gotta get the discussion started chirp!

  • FistsofNeil25

Looks like Maclean is going with the same line-up as saturday. Same line combos, same d pairings.

    • CUP 2014-15

Save a kids career….Please trade or waive Gryba…I can’t believe that Corvo is back in, if Gryba had a game like Corvo did last game he would be benched until the snow clears, what is wrong with this coaching staff, it’s not like the Caps have any big F#@king wingers, ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!! How many games do we have to watch our D play like an SEL team ? We need size, I mean holy shit…. Soderbergh is still out for Boston on a nice hit by Gryba stepping up at the Bruins blueline. This young lad forces the play wide. The middle of the ice will be wide open tonight for the Caps, shit I hate this soft candy ass D we are dressing.

      • JAY79

I agree 100%!!! I honestly don’t know what drugs Mac has been smoking this year but his decisions have been crap this season.

  • Sensturion

Good news of the day: Brent Sutter says Curtis Lazar has been Canada’s best forward so far.

    • FistsofNeil25

Yeah James Duthie just asked Bobby Mac who his top pick for best team Canada player so far would be.. Mackenzie said Lazar. Looks like we have a pretty good player in the making.

  • runningbear1974

For fun… Spezza comes back, replaces Kassian…
Spezza, Pageau, Condra… Defensively solid line…

    • FistsofNeil25

haha I would honestly not be the least bit opposed to such a line. Zbad looked really good between Milo and Conacher on saturday.

      • runningbear1974

I think Spezza would play well with guys who can stop and change directions quickly… And guys who don’t give up possession of the puck easily…

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I honestly don’t have a problem with that either…. Hell could theoretically give us 3 quality lines that need to be defended against.

Or swap Condra with Kassian and tell him to just stand on the opposite side of the net as Spezza and essentially act as a basketball backboard for Spezza to bank shots off of and toward the net lmao

  • my2sens

Stuck at work, anyone know where I can watch WJHC online? Clean site if possible… thanks to everyone!
