Islanders vs. Senators- Highlights

  • JBL11

As a long time Spezza fan, it feels weird to admit that Turris is quite possibly developing into a more complete player, and that he deserves to be our #1C (for now, anyway). Being a point per game doesn’t mean a whole lot when you’re -6 after 12 games…especially not as the captain of a team that is supposed to have a focus on “team defence”…

  • Robert Cyr

My oh my, we blow 2 leads of 2 goals (2-0 and 4-2 ), get bombarded 57-30, and
    luckily save 1 point.
Where oh where did this team, that totally dominated the Red Wings, free fall off the track? All our players are healthy ( physically ), but mentally they are playing worse
than last years’ “Pesky Sens ”
Coach MacLean has to rally the troops, go with his best lineup, and stick with the lines
until they find their mojo and chemistry. These guys need to start a winning streak as
early as this Sunday against the Dallas Stars who are 13th in Western Conference.

Failing to right this ship, will lead to total collapse, which will lead to drastic drop in attendance at Canadian Tire Centre. Last night’s attendance was a mere shade over 15,000 ( lowest in years )

Bryan Murray must be having many sleepless and worrisome nights, wondering when
this nightmare will ever come to an end !!

    Highlights?!?!

Eeeek I knew you were an optimist Chirp, but that is possibly the overstatement of the year.

Still not willing to hit the panic button, we are finding ways to get points, which is the ONLY saving grace. We are only one point out of the playoffs, and had we found a way to win any of our 3 over time loses we would be sitting even better.

That being said, it can fairly easily be argued that we shouldn’t have even made it to the overtimes.

Also, am I the only one that is starting to wonder if Cowen took a useless pill while working out his contract, I swear it seems he basically said if this takes longer than X I will be useless for X games.

    • Mexican Baby Jesus

We are 5 points out of playoffs sir

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I am tired, so may entirely be missing something, but how do you figure?

8th place has 12 points and we have 11.

        • Mexican Baby Jesus

Because of new divisions a maximum of 5 teams can make it from any given division (if they get both wild cards). Yes we are 1 point behind 7th and 8th in the conference, but those two teams are top three in their respective divisions, this guaranteed a playoff spot. So even if we were to pass them, we would still be out of playoff spot. 5th place team in our division is 5 points ahead.
That is the shitty part about new alignment. There are more guaranteed spots (6 vs. 3). So if one division is stronger than the other by a landslide, it is still unfair (best teams wont make it).
Before, it was impossible to not make the playoffs and have more points than teams making the playoffs. Now, it is possible (4 divisions…). On the flip side, if this does happen, advantage is given to the shitty teams in the other division finishing 3rd and clinching.
          God damnet

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Ahhh fair enough, I forgot about that part, thanks!

  • Rizzo

Spezza isn’t the problem so let’s end that talk right now. I’ve honestly been pretty impressed with his play this year when he’s not working with Chris Neil and Colin Greening as his wings. The problem is the blue line – we are horrible at preventing the opposition from setting up the cycle and give up far too many odd man rushes. 57 shots allowed…

What happened to our solid 3rd and 4th lines contributing energy and a strong forecheck? Now we look slow and out of position. It’s very frustrating to watch as a fan, with a kid like Lehner playing his balls off for the team and no one matching that effort up ice.

    • WaitingSince92

I think everyone agrees with you with regard to our defence, but (and I’m a big Spezza fan too) Spezza could certainly be a lot better. He’s a part of, but not the only cause of the Sens problems.

Over the last 3 years especially, Spezza has improved the non-offense parts of his game, slowly but surely. It looks like he’s regressing now instead of continuing to improve, which is more than a little bit bad after you consider the C on his chest.

And yes, Turris is surely the more complete player, well deserving of the line 1 C tryout, especially after filling in the rols admirably last year.

      • Rizzo

Spezza’s been a point-per-game player for us his entire career (633 pts in 622GP). Turris has looked awesome, but it’s 12 games. Turris is more complete as a two-way player, but that’s not what you’re looking for on your top scoring line, you’re looking for playmakers, and Spezza is one of the best.

        • WaitingSince92

I think if you want to win a cup, you can’t have one-dimensional leaders. I still have hope Spezza can become a better all-around player.

Remember, Yzerman was once considered a weak, one-dimensional player until he was pushed by his coach(es) to be a complete hockey machine.

    • Tony Gallo

Spezza’s play is not the problem… it is his ability to provide leadership as captain that is of question for me.

People underestimate the value of true leadership… it is not about the points, but the ability to keep the “troops together”, be a role model for work ethic on and off the ice, keeping the players on the same page as the coach… that is what we need.

Unfortunantely I dont really see anyone else on the team that can provide that level of leadership… I really think we have to trade for someone who can provide this skill set

      • Sandy

Are you in the dressing room to know that Spezza is not a good leader?
It was either Murray or McLean that said Spezza had been a big voice in the room for awhile. The younger players went to Spezza .. not Alfie.. More of an age thing — I guess..
I would give this team a little more time.
Their confidence seems to have taken a hit after their lacklustre play against Ana, SJ & LA..

Tomorrow won’t be easy either.. Dallas is no slouch..
I can’t believe the departure of Gonchar made that much difference in the defensive play. He didn’t play 60 min a night… more like 20… Same with Alfie…

They couldn’t score last year but had very good defensive play. Now they can score but can’t play defense.
I hope they go with 7 D. Putting Kassian on the ice is just a waste of space.

To Mr. Emery…. nice mugging last night. You said Holtby didn’t want to fight.. and you told him to protect himself. You said.. you didn’t have much of a choice but to fight. Really… against an unwilling opponent… you didn’t have a choice.. yet Holtby didn’t want to fight?
        Back onto the ‘juice’ Razor?

possibly set to browse offline mode and bringing up a previous post??

    • Mat

Give Chirp a break. We’re all a bit depressed these days..

  • WaitingSince92

I was actually pining for Carkner last night. How pathetic is THAT?

  • WaitingSince92

Also, one last thing. We didn’t deserve a point last game. Allowing that many shots, and relying on a weak goalie to score… a different result might make some fans think we’re playing better than we really are.

  • Doc

Fun fact: Sens allowed 57 shots on goal last night which was a franchise record. This was the third time this year they allowed more than 50 shots on net.

All previous years combined? Happened only three times. Think about this for a second… Beyond horrible team defense.

  • timwrx

    Heard Boro called up.

  • hq8

sens could definitely use emery if it were ever possible, they are missing that anger in them – anger at their shitty play.

    specifically about the game:
getting outshot 57-31, losing a 2-0 and then a 4-2 lead, the trend continues.

the spezza line obviously didnt work out, some people were hoping it would maybe spark something but it didnt. i feel Maclean is trying to send a message to multiple parties here. a message to Murray and Melnyk that he needs better players than Neil or Phillips available, a message to Spezza to up his game, a message to Neil maybe that hey here is your chance prove your worth. as a big picture, this is a worrying development because Spezza cant be happy with that kind of demotion

and also what does Maclean really think of Spezza as the team’s premier forward and captain? Spezza’s ice time was a limited 18 minutes total yesterday, thats telling given the nature of yesterday’s game (i.e. shit goalie in NYI net) and given Spezza’s position in the team. Looks to me that the coach is trying to teach Spezza a lesson and reminding him what the real demands are.

  • MikeS

Anyone see the leafs/nucks game tonight. Leafs fans calling for Kassian’s head after a hit that looked less vilolent then cooke’s on karlsson

    • hq8

yea, while their goons orr and mclaren run fearlessly and openly at every canucks player there is.
it would be sweet if the canucks shut these morons out tonight.

also, marc staal, -11 with 1 goal only…….time for a change of scenery? he has also kind of fallen on the depth chart in NYR with Girardi, McDonagh and DelZotto.

      • MikeS

I just found it funny how all the leaf fans who were saying cooke on karlsson was clean, are pissed that bolland got taken out with a less dirty looking hit

      • Mat

They’ll find a place for him in Carolina…

  • Mat

    So far…

The good: Turris, Lehner, Ryan, Z Smith,

The decent: Methot, MacArthur, Zbad, Neil, Spezza, Conacher, Corvo,

    The bad: Greening, Anderson, Gryba,

    The ugly: Michalek, Cowen, Wiercioch,

Not sure where to put Karlsson, Philips and Condra. Some days good, some days decent some days bad and sometimes all in one game for these guys. Bottom line, too many key players in the bad categories. I get the sense that they are on the verge of turing it around though. When they do, collective confidence will affect individual confidence and we should see a lot more good than bad.

Until then, please oh please, keep Lehner in nets.

    • hq8

Chris Neil is not decent, sorry.

    • Aaron 2.0

I’m pretty sympathetic when it comes to Phillips. I’m sure it’s no secret his age-related decline in play started at least a few years ago. Nobody expected he would be thrust into the minutes and quality of competition he’s faced this year. I hope you’re right about the confidence. When a group struggles collectively, individual faults become all the more noticeable, and confidence becomes an issue, which in turn affects play (and the vicious cycle continues). A few good results would probably do the team wonders. There’s definitely been too many passengers up to this point though.

  • PraiseAlfie11

When you often(!) Give up 50+ shots against, your goalie is not the problem.

    • Mat

I’ll agree to that but I’ll state that in our case, on games with average shot totals, our starting goalie has often (this year) dug us an impossible hole after barely 5 shots.

Starts are an issue with Andie and until he can figure this out, or that the team has the confidence to overcome early deficits, I don’t want him in the crease. Simple as that.

      • PraiseAlfie11

toto take a man down. Are you aware Andy has a 911 save percentage?

He isn’t the problem. IMO, the problem is too many times I see a couple of defensemen getting way out of position

  • Sicilian

Doesn’t look like we’re making the playoffs

    • Sicilian

You may not like it, I don’t like it either but the numbers speak for themselves. We need a spectacular turnaround and that’s unlikely

      • TookieIs100PercentRight

We’re currently on pace for 69 points. We need at least 92-94 to make the post-season comfortably as a top 3 seed in the Atlantic. So…basically the Senators need some 4-5 game winning streaks with no more than an occasional 2-3 game losing streak insterspersed. Oh, they ALSO need the Montreals, Detroits, Bostons and Torontos of the world to lose more than they win.
        Ugly stuff here.
        TOOKS100% OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • MikeS

I think you need more in this division. I would guess that 6 of the top 8 teams will be from the atlantic

  • Aaron 2.0

Montreal has lost a few in a row now. Leafs were shut out tonight, and look extremely thin at Centre (Bozak on LTIR; Bolland w/ sliced tendon). There could be a small window opening in the division if the sens can start digging in now!

Also, Boston lost to NYI with their back-up in net in the 2nd game of a back-to-back. Just saying that makes me feel better.

  • Sensturion

Got my tickets for today’s game from Broker4tickets! The team has never lost when I go to a game so hopefully that streak continues today!

    • sprucesens

u need to buy season tickets then

      • Sensturion

If only I had the time and money for such a thing… I’d be going to all 42 games!

  • sben

that 4 minute penalty was a blessing.

  • sben

this is looking more like the team I know

  • sben

    dammit
