Disappointing Loss in New Jersey- Highlights

  • Sicilian

It’s like Jekyll and Hyde. I’m glad MacLean ripped into them. Hopefully now, we’ll see some professionalism

  • Hax

Gotta say I expected some serious growing pains in the wake of Alfie’s departure. Huge shoes to fill and you can’t expect the team to just keep on rolling – especially with the way it ended. Even if Alfie had announced his retirement early and had his sweater raised to the rafters on opening night they’d still be going through separation anxiety over their long-time leader.

That said, better to have the team work through this now than next year when we should be primed to start challenging for the conference. I’m confident that we’ll work through this and by the end of the year be playing the kind of hockey we want. Only question really (for this season) is will we still be in striking distance of a playoff spot by then? And if we are will we end up stuck in 8th playing an elite team?

Still – my focus has always been on next season. Not that we can’t win this year or that we shouldn’t be concerned with inconsistent play, just that next year and beyond are bigger concerns for me.

    • Mat

Ottawa’s eternal source for pride and a winning culture gone up and left to DEEtroit.

Can’t buy that kind of leadership in free agency.

      We skrewed.

  • Hax

Send down Ceci before he picks up bad habits. Call up Borowiecki.

    Methot-Karlsson
    Cowen-Borowiecki
    Phillips-Gryba

  • Tooks

Whoever was harping on us being soft, clearly has no clue. We are the 2nd highest hitting team in the NHL with 1100+ hits. Thats our problem actually, we hit too much. We have big slow guys who just hit and cant do much else, especially getting the puck out.

SJ, CHI, STL, MIN, DET, TB, MTL all have under 700 hits, avg maybe 10-15 hits a game, hitting is no longer what it used to be, the better teams have adapted and structured their play around that. Yes some teams still make it work like LA, BOS, ANA but the best teams hardly hit, they play aggressive positional DEF and move the puck out fast.

So this thing about hitting, hell NJ has under 650 hits, yet we couldnt even get close to Marty…While our big guys try to hit everything that moves and are left to catch up to the play.

Maclean preaches he wants to be fast hockey team, well then get onboard and watch how the top teams do it without hitting.

    • Alcatraz

Unless your name is Ovechkin you can’t hit while you have the puck

The teams with low hits also are some of the best possession teams. Co-incidence I think not

Teams forced to chase also are forced to hit. Pretty obvious. We simply need the puck more

    • boom

Back in the day, I coached minor hockey, and I always told my kids that MY definition of a tough team was one whose players were always willing to TAKE a hit to make a play, as opposed to always be the ones to MAKE the big hit.

If you are saying, Tookie, that hitting is an over-rated stat, I agree.

Hitting is easy. For proof, look at Greening’s stat line.

By all means, make the hit when the opportunity is there, but you better be fast enough to recover your postion when you do.

Guys like Boro are good enough skaters, IMO, to be an effective physical presence, but I wonder about guys like Cowen and Gryba, although Gryba hasn’t been given as much opportunity as Cowen thus far.

  • SensFanAl

If Ottawa continues playing the way they are, players like Bobby Ryan, Clarke Macarthur, even Spezza are going to go sign with other teams.

    • RUSH RLZ

I’ve been loathe to say this for a long, long time, but something really rotten hangs over this team. It is almost like when Alfie left, some players were so pissed at ownership that they don’t want to be here anymore, that they aren’t committed anymore, that they don’t plan on staying here anymore, that they wont dig deep and work as hard anymore.

In any other industry it would be called “waiting for the shoe to drop”, someone is mentally checked out of their current environment, and knows they will be somewhere else in a matter of time.

It makes me sick to my stomach to even type those words but it’s a weird gut feeling I’ve had for quite some time now. So much shit fall into that too, seems like yesterday Ryan was gushing at the chance to play with Spezza and their was the enthusiasm of new blood in the squad… now it feels like everything is falling apart.

      • SensFanAl

it’s just painful to watch. My fear is we end up being like the New York Islanders or Edmonton Oilers. No one is going to want to come to Ottawa.

      • Tooks

Well how committed would you be after seeing your longest Captain and God like leader leave over a fuss with Onwership who wouldnt pay the man what he’s worth, especially to this team. That kinda screams at you “Well how will they treat me” in the end of things.

  • Mat

It boils down to 3 things:

    - Defence can’t get the puck out of the zone efficiently and consistently. We have several shifts per game where the whole 5 man unit scrambles to get it out and either causes a turnover or an icing which means 5 tired players must remain on the ice. Either way, we allow ourselves to become vulnerable.

    - We suck at our own system. The dump and chase specifically. We can dump, we just can’t retrieve. Like at all. So we just create turnovers over, and over and over.. There’s no sustained pressure in the offensive zone.

    - Inconsistent goaltending. Allowing multiple goals in few shots very early in the game = Deflate the whole team early in the game = Not playing with confidence = increased odds of losing.

    • RUSH RLZ

Goaltending has to sort itself out and is a byproduct of terrible defence. Your first two points are spot on though.

  • RUSH RLZ

Chirp – I didn’t have the heart to say so yesterday afternoon but I’m afraid that “winning streak” video is cursed!

    • Mat

Yeah, and you need to stop calling the post game videos “highlights”…

      • Colin

Ref highlights? They were front and centre last night.

        • RUSH RLZ

Officiating was SUCH ASS again last night that I personally think it deserves league attention. That being said it was our team who sucked and who blew this one.

      • SensChirp

Ha. A summary of what happened in a game is usually called highlights.

        • RUSH RLZ

Yeah Chirp I gotta side with you on that one! Guys, let’s remember that Chirp is surely as sad as the rest of us today and not to take it out on him. :cP

    • SensChirp

Yup. It is. I’ve requested it be removed from Youtube so I can resist the urge to post in the future.

  • MikeS

I really really hope the sens win tonight. If they dont I could see a panic trade being made before the roster freeze

    • Jacques

Good, what would be wrong with that! We need something here!

      • MikeS

Because if the make a deal its a knee jerk reaction and dealing from a position of weakness. They gonna get robbed

        • Tooks

Like we robbed TB when we had a position of power? right…it makes no diff. IF the Sens are looking at a certain player, we can give anyone of those players and it would be a win.

    • Tooks

Good, get rid of the dead weight. (Cowen, Phillips, Gryba, Greening, Condra, Michalek)

  • Jacques

Win coach of the year and all of a sudden your shit doesn’t stink! So I blame PMac in this but , I blame Murray more. Who evaluates the talent , and when to move guys to bring in some of our better talent! Hell 22-15-14-46-19 – we have to move on from these guys! Do something. We have guys to bring up who are hungry, aside from Karlsson’s buzzing the team is boring to watch. Lehner said it Nonchalant, number 19 plays with no urgency – he’s rubbing off on everyone. You look to your leader in dire times and our leader floats!
Were we pesky last year – yes. Why 19 was nowhere to be seen. Sorry, but he’s back and we suck.

    • Doc

Here’s a tissue for your issue.

      • Jacques

You’re one of the biggest apologists on here, until the media and fans demand answers we’re going to get this. In Ottawa, fans and media don’t ask for accountability. However, they show thieir frustration by not going to games. And other flock followers make up excuses – for Spezza-Greening-Anderson and the rest of the guys who underperform! Off year, playing on weekends-leap year-walking under ladders-black cats crossing their paths – yada-yada-yada! Best players play bull shit MaClean – cuz their are better players in Bingo than at least 5 of the guys on the big team. Hell we bring up Ceci and he’s better than half the D-men already.

    • Tooks

Who else would you have made Captain,w as Phillips or Neil, lol, neither of whom I would look up and be inspired by atm.

  • RUSH RLZ

Oh man I know it’s an optional skate but you would think more of our top 6 other than Ryan would show up… and maybe even the coach. What kind of message is this?

    • SensFanAl

It just shows that no one cares. I wouldn’t have made it optional. They did nothing yesterday to justify having an optional skate.

      • RUSH RLZ

Some others are suggesting that PMac is in a meeting with our key players. Maybe that is why and god only knows what they are talking about.

        • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

If the is in a meeting with the key players and Ryan isn’t involved in this meeting we have more problems then I even thought…

          • RUSH RLZ

Maybe it’s the “leadership group” or those who need to pick up their game the most… I dunno. *shrugs*

        • SensFanAl

If they’ve already checked out of the hotel mentally there is no amount of talking that is going to get them working better.

    • Hax

Agree that on the surface it looks bad. But given that the “top 6″ play the most minutes they are actually the guys that need rest more than skating on a back-to-back. And if they’re actually in a meeting with PMac all the better.

    • Tooks

I agree, optional?!?! after and game like last night….lame. Complete disaster brewing, Inconsistent coaching leads to inconsistent players.

  • iKarly65

People need to chill out before criticizing Corvo. I’m reading all these negative comments about him all over the internet – Facebook, Twitter… he’s been a very solid and stabilizing player for us. What happened last night can’t even be blamed on him at all – he tried to keep the puck in along the boards which is hard enough, and it got by him. It happens. on another play he was tripped. Regardless how fast he tries to get back up and back in the play, he is strides behind and it doesn’t matter at hat point.

Cowen – gets the stick knocked out of his hands, can’t really do too much at this point against a player who has the edge in speed and stick-in-handedness. Only thing he can do is take a penalty.

At some point the frustration of not getting calls boils over. They take a penalty against 6 Devils players on the ice – which should have been called dead because of the too many men penalty. So instead of a PP they go 4-on-4. Again, Corvo’s tripped leading to an odd-man, short-handed rush and goal. Could have been negated by the non-call. Cowen’s stick slashed out of his hands – no call and ensuing Devils goal.

It’s a series of bad breaks and these kill teams momentum.

Nothing against anyone playing, but Methot is a veteran player, a leader, and a solid defenceman – if he is ready to play, he SHOULD be playing. Inexcusable. Coaching decisions have been strange.

  • SenaTHOR

I’m tired of players playing desperately. They need to play at a high seed and relaxed. When you are desperate you are tense and it takes longer to make decisions. For God’s sake get a sports psycho working with the players.

    • runningbear1974

I agree, the guys could use a psychologist to figure out something to get them to play relaxed and determined…

  • Tyler111

    My thoughts:

(1)Its time for the best players to play: Not sure who is worse Phillips or Cowen so you can replace them how you see fit.
    Karlsson-Methot
    Phillips-Ceci
    Cowen-Borowiecki
(2)Spezza is showing why he didn’t deserve the C. Ive never been a fan of Spezza because of poor defensive responsibilities, poor effort levels, and now poor leadership. Im tired of the argument “hes a creative player so we need players to play with him” or “hes a creative player so hes going to make some mistakes”. Honestly, that is total BS.
(3)Powerplay – Im tired of the coach sending a “message” by sending out neil, smith and greening on the PP. The only message here is that “Maclean doesn’t want to score on the PP”. Aside from that, our powerplay needs to (A)stop being so stationary and (B)get off the perimeter and into the dangerous areas
(4)Defensive zone coverage – This has been a total disgrace all season long. What I mean by this is the simple stuff you learn in novice hockey (ie: staying in front of the net, taking the pass on 2 on 1s). No wonder Anderson sucks, the coverage isnt even AHL level from some of the guys.

  • boom

Can we go one day without somebody whining about Alfie being gone?

    • SensFanAl

      easier said than done.

    • RUSH RLZ

Yeah Alfie being gone is no excuse. We should be able to handily replace everything he brought and then some…

The only point I made is if there is lingering disappointment, amongst our current players, for ownership to let him leave is such a shitty fashion.

      • boom

My comment wasn’t aimed at you – both sides screwed up, in my opinion, and Alfie’s ego played a large part in it.

In any case, we all need to move on.

        • RUSH RLZ

I know bro, was just sayin.

    • SensChirp

As much attention as that moment gets, the importance of his loss and how he left is still being understated.

      • boom

Get over it. All of you make it sound like we never went through tough times while he was here.
You all forget that the fan base wanted him traded away for the longest time (sound familiar?)
How can it be undertstated when it’s stated every day on this site?

        • SensChirp

It’s not just about him being gone, it’s about how he was treated during the departure. The Senators have always been viewed as a first class organization. The Owner significantly hurt that reputation and it left a bad taste in the mouth of the guys still here.

          • boom

Fair enough, but surely some of the blame has to lay with Alfie and his representation? There are two sides to every negotiation.

          • SensFanAl

Can you seriously stop with the whole agent/ representation thing already. Just take a look at Detroit and Nicklas Lidstrom, they were always paying him more than he’s worth, why?? because he’s the captain and he holds the team and represents the team. He was drafted by Detroit and retired there. You don’t put a price on that.

          • Tooks

Blame Alfie, why? he gave his damands and it should have been ok sign here Alfie. No other course of action should have taken place, Alfie is well worth the 6Mil he asked, especially to this fragile team

          • boom

Ok, i;m sorry, I forgot that, in your world, we should just give any veteran what he asks for. Can’t wait to see what we sign Phillips for.
Listen, I do belive that the Senators mis-handled the Alfie thing, but you have to see that Alfie took advantage of that, knowing the court of popular opinion would rule in his favour…as all of you are proving.
Anad I will say it one more time, it’s not like he led us to the promised land…

          • runningbear1974

Maybe that’s why Spezza looks lackadaisical…

    • SensFanAl

The reason I mentioned Alfie is because when ownership says we don’t care how much you mean to this team and here is the money you should get. Then it’s a big deal, do you really think that Spezza or Phillips or any other player would care to play or put any heart in what they do, when the ownership says this is what you’re worth to us. So if your leaders are not worth anything, do you think any young players have anyone to look up to if you’re telling them you’re worthless.

      • runningbear1974

I understand it’s hard to work when people are telling you are worthless… But, I don’t think anyone said to Alfie that he was worthless… If someone did then that wasn’t a very nice thing to say…
If Spezza and Phillips have reasons to not play hard, then get rid of them… We need people that have reasons to play hard…

        • SensFanAl

The decisions that ownership has made regarding Alfie, is something that this team and the fans will pay for, for many years to come.

          • runningbear1974

The decision was made by Alfie… We could have done things to avoid the situation… In the future don’t let anyone talk to our superstars, sign them up before they go somewhere else… BUT… And this is a big BUT… There is no way in a million years I would have imagined Alfie leaving the team… He behaved in a way that was completely unpredictable… And I don’t blame management for how Alfie behaved…

          • SensFanAl

I’d behave the same way if management tells me we’ll make it up to you then says sorry we can’t afford what you’re asking for we have budget restrictions, now be a team player and accept less. Yeah, no it’s definitely not the management fault.

          • runningbear1974

sure, but it’s complicated… All year he went with the charade that he was thinking of retiring, then there was talk that Murray wanted to push off discussion of extension…
Bottom line, for me… Alfie had 2 qualities that I liked (loved)… 1) He’s a hard working guy (on the ice, at the gym)… 2) He was loyal…
Now, he’s a little less loyal… He can enjoy his sixty millions or seventy millions or whatever he has, wherever he wants…

  • RUSH RLZ

Some insight into what the supposed meeting was about?

@Citizenkwarren Spezza says there is a realization that everyone — anyone — could be traded at any time…

Let’s suppose there is something rotten in Denmark that management knows about, and we don’t start showing any signs of turning things around… would we explore drastic measures with the likes of likes of Spezz (NTC), Phillips (becomes LNTC Jan 1), Anderson, Michalek, Greening, Smith, Cowen…

I leave Methot and Neil off that list because I don’t see them as part of any conceivable leadership / motivation problem. Same goes for Ryan, MacArthur, ZBad. EK65 is one guy we probably wouldn’t consider moving right now in our wildest dreams.

I’m not the panicky ‘trade Spezza, get rid of all the players’ guy. I’ve never once in my life suggested we trade away our current captain but… thinking openly about how desperate we may become to get this team back on the rebuild track.

  • RUSH RLZ

Paul Maclean newser live on @tsn1200 in a minute

    • Tooks

Wow cant wait here’s what he will say.

      We werent good enough…

      • LeafsSux

Just spit my drink on the keyboard!!

      • RUSH RLZ

Just funny it was referred to as a ‘newser’ by Steve Lloyd. Thought it was might be something more…

    • SensFanAl

      Bruce Garrioch on Paul Maclean:

“We can be better. We have to find ways to deliver the message,” said MacLean on coaching staff.

MacLean said leaders need to do things right with their performance

    • Tooks

HAHA guy who asked “You’ve been saying the same thing since day 1″ LOL
      Brilliant!
Macs response….”Yes, yes we have” Typical.

  • CrackAttack

I blame the terrible play on the Sens marketing for trying to jump on the #pesky bandwagon and brand the team by forcing the name “Fearless”. It’s jinxed us. It makes me cringe any time I see them pushing that. Makes me wonder what their marketing department was possibly thinking…

As an old beer commercial once put it, “you can’t give yourself your own nickname. Otherwise, we’d all be called ‘the Duke’ “. :)

  • Tooks

This is going straight to hell and fast. Spezza will leave, Ryan will leave. EK probably regrets signing longterm, Phillips will probably re-sign, Cowen signed, Greening, Condra signed, LOL. fuck.

    .

    • SensFanAl

If anyone needs to go, it’s ownership. That unfortunately might take a while.

      • Tooks

Yes well that wont happen, hell we got rid of a 2 time 50 goal scorer for a dumb coach, who lasted only 1 year after that.

    • Bob

Ya.. you’re right.. Lets not go to anymore games, hell… lets not even watch another game. Probably everyone is regretting signing here..
If you are correct about Spezza.. It’s about time. Not sure what your love affair with Spezza is.. but he’s not the guy that will lead this team anywhere, maybe the basement. I’m sure we’re watching the same games, are you watching them on an old 32″ CRT?
but seriously, we need to keep Ryan and it might be at the cost of not keeping Spezza. And this isnt the only issue on this team, who knows whats going on in the backgroud..?

  • luckan20

    Disappointing is not the word.

  • Colin

#11 is gone. End of story. Adios Alfie.

The remaining players are still being paid handsomely to provide their services to the Ottawa Senators. They need to get over whatever is ailing them and start playing as best they can each and every night. If they need to be reassured and coddled into playing hard, then maybe they also need to go.
