Canadiens vs. Senators- Highlights

  • Doc

Lehner Unleashed! Awesome game from crazy eyes.

    • my2sens

Bourque quickly turned around when he saw that look!!

    • The Apostle

      I love those crazy eyes.

    • Terry

I would love to see Lehner pummel Gallagher!!!

  • The Apostle

Sens currently moving in the right direction – the two OT losses and now 2 victories with 2 more very winnable games coming up.

Still much to work on though, we are still too reliant on our goalie (and I don’t see that changing, it’s been that way for nearly 18 months) but we HAVE to get better at moving the puck out of our own zone.

Ryan and Turris still excellent, karlsson slowly edging back to where he was, Spezza playing well and some unheralded guys like Conacher and Smith performing well. If the defence settles down we’ll be well on our way to being back to where we can be.

Still worried about Greening, he just doesn’t seem to win anything at the moment. When Condra gets back, it might be time to sit Greening for a couple of games. Grant is doing enough to stick around short term.

    • Doc

Biggest surprise this season besides the obvious big names is definitely Smith. I’m really liking his game this year. His skating has improved tremendously and he seems to read the plays a lot better.

    • my2sens

I found Spezza last night mostly invisible… And Karlsson, although he is a fantastic play needs to return to basics when attempting to clear the puck out of our end. NOT through the middle…

Loving Smith’s play of late! Solid player!

Also, thoroughly enjoyed the look on the Habs fans sitting next to me when Neiler sat douchebag #3 of the Habs on his ass within first 5 of the game!

      • Kohlmanator

Spezza playing with Greening and Conacher, or even Neil, is going to force him to create offense by himself. It will be tough for him, but it opens the game for Mac-T-Ry.

Karlsson did have a few bad moments, but many of them were the result of Cowen giving him passes at completely inappropriate times. He handcuffed Karlsson.

        +1 on Smith.

        • spezzerman

Cowen blamed for Karlsson off night….shocker.

        • 65kwhissell19

ya I don’t think so. cowen did good

  • Kielbasa

Definitely nice to get that 2nd in a row. Lehner really played amazing yet again. The team needs to do more for him though. The shots against…that count seriously needs to reduce. The Sens are lucky walking away with points from these games when they are almost doubled in shots against like that.

The Turris line again…best line we’ve seen for the Sens in a very long time. I’m feeling bad for Spezza though. PM floating him around cannot be good for his confidence. He needs to get chemistry going with some regular linemates again. I still think Michalek and Conacher with Spezza make for a strong line.

Nonetheless…great to see the guys work hard (for 75% of the game) and manage to skate away with those 2 points. It’s always nice to see them bury the habs.

    Keep it going!!!

  • Robert Cyr

Like I posted in last topic, the team put forth a great effort, after weathering the early
    moments of first period.

Greening needs to go back down to Line 3 : Greening – Smith – Neil.

Michalek slots in Line 1 Michalek – Spezza – Zibanejad

Mika had a bad game against the Habs, but he should rebound in next game.

Line 2 MacArthur – Turris – Ryan is always on fire and should stay as is !

Take Kassian out and line 4 should be Conacher – Grant – Condra.

On defense pairings I would scratch Gryba, and slot in Wiercioch.

Sens finally have scored 50 goals and allowed 49, so it’s getting better !

    GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Snoopy Senior

    • Alcatraz

Actually Smith should be rewarded by having decent linemates lol…and Neil should be glued to 4th line
      Mac-Turris-Ryan
      Michalek-Spezza-Zibanejad
      Conacher-Smith-Condra (When Healthy)
      Greening-Grant-Neil

      • my2sens

Neil is a sniper! Case in point Columbus…. :-)

      • boom

I can accept you saying Neil should be glued to the 4th line, but, we need someone other than Condra for the 3rd line. Please,
It amazes me how you continue to hold this guy in such high regard.

        • Alcatraz

Haha I don’t hold him in any high regard. I just know that he is better than neil at creating possession and offense.
Personally I think Hoffman or Stone should be there

          • boom

Fair enough, I shouldn’t put words in your mouth. Sorry.

      • Millennium

I feel like these are basically how all our line combos should start, then tweak a couple guys.

personally, I would swap Greening with Condra.

    • Jacques

What is wrong with Gryba’s game he played well last night. Gryba and Boro in the lineup is what this team needs a little stability. Ceci when he’s up by the end of the year will be our 2nd dynamic puck mover. If Wiercioch gets in the lineup it should be for Phillips. He’s handling the puck like a grenade the last few games.
Spezza offensively is fine but in his own end he’s lost. For sure he’s injured.

      • Terry

I remember at least 2 bad plays that Gryba did last night that ended up as shots on Lehner. That being said, Karlsson made mistakes, Phillips made mistakes. The Senators needed this win to help build their confidence. Lehner weathered the early storm when Ottawa was chasing the puck. But as soon as Methot scored the tide turned. Happy to see Boro score his first NHL goal!! After the Sens were up, they seemed to get their legs under then and play their style of game. The next 2 games are key to build on the positives and really establish their identity.
I had to shut off the Eller interview during first intermission because all I got out of it was that people thought it was a dirty hit. In my opinion it was a great, clean hit that caught Eller when he wasn’t looking. At most, you could “possibly” call interference. But alas, that was my rant. I despise Gallagher but thank him for taking 4 penalties. The PP still needs work but started to show promise towards the end of the game.
        Go for 3!!!
        Go Senators!!

      • s3nsfan

yeah, there was one shift he was on the ice he had 3 turnovers that all led to scoring chances. I like his game, previous seasons, this year, he looks lost and at times confused. There have been games he’s kept it simple and the outcome was positive but last night was not a great outing?

  • SensChirp

So how do people think the Sens should sort out a suddenly crowded blueline?

    • FBP

I’d be patient for now, unless a great opportunity for a decent D upgrade presents itself. Injuries will happen, rookies will continue or start to struggle and 8 D might not even be enough for the playoffs.

      • SensChirp

I like Chris Phillips but I would be happy to never see him on the power play again. Need to get one of Corvo or Wiercioch in the line up and I think Gryba is the odd man out.

        • A-Train

I found it funny on HNIC last night when Galley highlighted “Chris Phillips on this late power play, clearly a defensive setup to protect the lead”. Actually, that’s just the way we’re doing things these days…

        • Jacques

Here’s another question do you Move Anderson in a deal to Florida if you get Clemmensen in the trade? or Ride Lehner and Lawson(good backup). You have to figure Anderson/Wiercioch package could maybe get us a Gudbranson and a Bjugstad.????

        • boom

          Agreed. How about this?

          Cowen – Karlsson
          Methot – Wiercioch
Phillips, Corvo, Boro can rotate in the 3rd pairing.

I think part of the reason Wiercioch struggled at times is because the entire D was struggling. Partnering him with Methot would help him, I think.

I just think Ottawa needs a strong puck mover on that 2nd pair.

    • Righteous Smoke

I say trade Wiercioch or Gryba cause Phillips, Cowen, Karlsson, Methot ain’t going anywhere, Borocop has been fantastic and it would be a douchebag move to release or trade Corvo after just signing him. I’d say trade Wiercioch, we have another puck moving DMan that could be ready for The NHL as soon as next season in Ceci and I’m sure Ceci will be a hell of a lot better than Wiercioch.

    • Doc

We all know from past experiences that things can quickly go south with injuries. I’d keep rotating the bottom pairing depending on the opponent. Cowen seems to be coming along, Karlsson and Methot are locks, and Philips is our anchor on the third line. I’d give some more time to Patty to get his game back to form. Boro is making things difficult for the rest, can’t see how we can’t keep him in the lineup for now. Corvo is becoming redundant with Karlsson coming back to his old awesome self.

    • Jacques

One guy has to go I would think. Murray seemed to hint at it. I like Cowen-Karlsson , Methot should be back on the left side. So a lefty should be moved. Looking like Wiorcioch might be the guy. Turris won’t like that.

    • Hax

I’d dress 7 D for a bit. Kassian brings nothing to the table really and the way MacLean shuffles lines it’s not like it would be hard to mix 11 guys in.

Even if it’s just Wiercioch for power play minutes or something.

As much as we all love the guy, Borowiecki will go down at some point if there are no injuries or trades. And that’s fine – kid will be a regular by next season.

If I were Murray I’d be hoping we can play Corvo enough before the deadline that some team wants him to add depth.

Depending on what the plan is for next year, Gryba might be expendable (since he’s mostly on the team for being right-handed). If Richardson feels Ceci is going to be ready next year he might take Gryba’s spot.

    • Conor_smythe

      Gryba right away

Phillips as soon as his ntc opens up. Jan 1st

    • senate19

Sign Lehner, then trade Anderson, Greening, 2nd round pick to Florida for T. Thomas, B. Campbell.

Thomas is a great goalie and plays well in our barn

      • The Apostle

This may well be one of the worst trade suggestions in the history of the world.

        • senate19

*sniff. Well you put me in my place. :) I’m not offended. Just daring to dream like Spezza always says.

I want me a trade though.

        • Righteous Smoke

What also makes it a bad trade suggestion is that SensChirp asked what should be done to sort out a crowded BLUELINE, and senate19 says trade Andy(not a defenseman), Greening(not a defenseman), 2nd rd pick(not a defenseman) for Thomas, and B.Campbell(A defenseman). Correct me if Im wrong but I dont think you sort out a crowded Blueline by getting more defensemen…

  • boom

I’m afraid that what they “should” do, and what they “will” do are two completely different things.

Weircoch sitting on the bench while Phillips continues to get premium ice-time makes no sense to me. He has been awful, IMO.

Boro has done exactly what a 5-6 guy should do, and he will likely be the odd man out, because of his contract.

    • PraiseAlfie11

Not a chance borocop goes down if he keeps playing like this.

  • SensFanInMTL

Panthers’ Winchester to have hearing Friday

Friday, 11.08.2013 / 8:49 AM / Department of Player Safety News

    NHL.com

Florida Panthers center Jesse Winchester will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety Friday for a hit on Boston Bruins center Chris Kelly Thursday night at TD Garden.

Old Sens’ renwew acquaintances. Winchester is still irrelevant in the NHL these days!

    • Alcatraz

Actually Winchester has scored like 4 goals in the last few games. Actually playing real well on a struggling Panthers team

    • boom

Yeah, Winchester has 4 goals and is irrelevant. What does that make Greening and Condra?

      • SensFanInMTL

Too bad he wasn’t a beast with us as he is with them in your eyes, eh?

        • boom

I wasn’t intending to start an argument. You said he is irrelevant “these days”, so what he did in the past doesn’t matter, does it?

I was trying to point out that, “these days”, he is more relevant than a couple of our prizes, so you shouldn’t sling mud.

          • SensFanInMTL

Regin’s got plenty of goals too. We should probably inquire to get him back and have him lost somewhere on the fourth line!!

            I always liked Chris Kelly.

      • Jacques

Ah let me take a guess ….. LOUSY!

  • aegiszx

Great win!! We’re starting to climb… Imagine if we were in the West. 8 teams with more than 22+ pts… Meanwhile, the East is still up for grabs as no team has been “dominating” lately…

    • Alcatraz

Its brutal, Pittsburgh will win the Metro division and play a better team than whoever finishes 2nd in the Metro

  • FBP

Who would we have to give up to nab Gudbranson? I haven’t seen him play at all.

    • Alcatraz

I love Conacher, but it makes me wonder if we could have done a Bishop+ for Gudbranson instead now lol

      • FBP

Probably not. Murray would have been all over acquiring a big young D (who is from the Ottawa area I think?).

        • Alcatraz

Ya I’m saying now, not then

    • Jacques

      Anderson

      • FBP

I really don’t want to loose Andy yet. I feel as if though we’ll pay for it immediately via an injury/set back to Lehner.

        • Jacques

As a budget team you have to think that Andy a D-man and one of our young forwards are what we’ll use to bolster the line-up. i think we need a stable D and another real good young 2nd or 3rd liner with growth potential. Florida really a team that can work something out with us you’d have to think and they’re here next???? I think Lehner can carry the ball – we have a stable of 3 real good young goalies coming up in the next few years. Lawson people underestimate him – he can be a real good backup. Just ask Timrix.

          • Jacques

Obviously if you trade Andy you make sure the other team pays big time!

  • A-Train

I doubt Spezza is worried about linemates etc. This was no doubt part of the discussion around getting the ‘C’. Doing whatever it takes to help the team, which probably includes playing injured … which I agree watching last game he looks hurt.

Oh, and he’s on a PPG pace.

    • Cassidaus

Not sure I buy the injury line. He and Michalek had the most ice time out of any forward last night.

  • s3nsfan

Thanks for the Highlights Chirp. Was great being at the rink last night. Loved when the habs fans were all mouthy after the first goal and you could see them slouching and getting pissed off after each goal.

    • Colin

Yup. Really looked good on them filing out with 5-6 minutes left.

  • Hax

Another step in the right direction. Still way too sloppy in our own end and nowhere near the team structure we need to have (or that we did have last year and the year before). But getting closer game-by-game. Offensive flair is great to see.

I think Michalek is slowly but surely progressing as well and getting used to his “new” knee. He’s not producing a ton of course but I think he’ll steadily get better as the season goes on and soon enough be one of our better forwards. Not worth the cash he’s making this year, but worth something on the trade market at the deadline or potentially even worth a low-ball offer to extend (which I’m sure he’d turn down).

Realizing how young this group is and how we’re really looking to next year as our best shot at a cup, I think we’re moving in the right direction. Of course if we can extend a few players I think our chances for a cup get better each year for the next 4 or 5 years.

  • Alcatraz

Can we stop micro-analyzing every player on this team? Leave Spezza alone, let him continue at a PPG pace. The rest of his game will come.

    • FBP

      Leave Spezza alone!!! :)

  • HarvardYaleAndPrincetonMan

How long before the first Don Brennan “goalie controversy” article appears ?

    • Hax

Since Don probably scans this blog for ideas, I guess not long now.

I really hope Murray is super patient though. There’s no rush to trade Anderson. Lehner is probably our future and probably ready to be #1 now if needs be, but Murray should bide his time until he has an amazing offer on the table.

      • s3nsfan

No way, donnie has that article written already. Just waiting for Baines to give him the nod lol

I hope they keep Anderson the season, give Lehner a good development year with support without the added pressure.

    • Doc

Can’t stand him when he’s on TSN1200. Horrible as a ‘journalist’ (haha can’t even write that without laughing), and he’s as bad on the radio. Not sure why he even gets the chance to participate.

      What a hack.

      • RUSH RLZ

I *loathe* that guy in the newspaper…. but honestly he seems pretty decent on the radio from what I’ve heard.

        • Doc

As a daily listener of TSN1200, I can tell you that is not the case. He usually tries to get a reaction out of people and makes stupid comments. His hockey knowledge is also sub par at best.

          Can’t stand him.

          • Righteous Smoke

Don Brennan = Tookie (AKA Tooks)

  • SensChirp

Nathan Lawson headed back to Binghamton. They have three games this weekend and will be happy to have their starter back.

Craig Anderson is ready to return to the Ottawa line up but I would expect Lehner starts on Saturday against Florida.

    • s3nsfan

MacLean will play Lehner, he won’t take that away from him.

See how Lehner players saturday. Maybe he starts Tuesday against Philly, you have to think though if Lehner has a good game Saturday, he could very well just ride the hot hand.

      • A-Train

I agree, but MacLean has to balance that against the very ingrained unwritten rule that you don’t lose your job because you get injured.

    • A-Train

Clearly the best course of action would be giving Lehner a full backup year. Though you gotta wonder if his play (and Anderson’s) will make that impossible.

  • two to Tootoo too

    Bizarre stat of the day

After 16 games played by each Ottawa has scored more goals than Pittsburgh

    • MethotToMyMadness

Well the issue this season has not been goal scoring, it’s been defensive breakdowns, too many shots against and our Goals against which has killed us. How many teams score 4 or 5 goals in a game and still lose? That’s what happened to us at least 3 or 4 times, many of them with us originally leading. But we do appear to be correcting that, which is good news.

  • Sensturion

Florida just fired their coaching staff. It’ll be an interesting game tomorrow…

    • Hax

Yeah I kinda wish they had waited one more game. Too often teams seem to rally for a game or two after something like this. Still a winnable game though if we play like we should.

      • Alcatraz

        Unless your are Philly

    • RUSH RLZ

How did that work out for Philly? I hope both teams continue to struggle so we can possibly take advantage of inevitable roster shake-ups…. *drools*

      • Alcatraz

4 way deal between all shitty teams
        Edmonton:
        Ryan Miller, 1st (Buffalo(Islanders))
        Philly:
        Jordan Eberle, 2nd (Florida)
        Florida:
        Wayne Simmonds, 3rd (Edmonton)
        Buffalo (Russian lovers):
        Dmitry Kulikov + Sean Couturier

        • RUSH RLZ

Interesting idea although it suggests Simmonds is more valuable than Eberle…

My point though was that I’d like to see US take advantage somehow. :)

          From NHL.com:

“It’s easier to fire a coach than to fire 23 players,” Tallon said in a
conference call. “But we’re on the phone constantly and we’re going to make changes as we go. We want people that want to be Panthers, and if they don’t want to be we’ll accommodate them. Right now I’m dissatisfied with the effort from most of the guys and we need to be better.”

          • Terry

            Start picking the bones!!!!

  • two to Tootoo too

    (Poached from another blog)

When Robin Lehner brings home furniture from IKEA it assembles itself

Robin Lehner has a no-trade clause, Bryan Murray just doesn’t know it yet

    • Doc

      #LehnerFacts

    • Righteous Smoke

Or Rene Bourque assembles it for him

  • Terry

Ian Mendes had a good Senators article on TSN.ca about The Anderson/Lehner Situation, which I don’t consider a situation, that is definitely worth a read.

  • FBP

So much trade chatter today. I want a move! Ha.

  • NickofTime

Anybody miss Condra last night? No, I didn’t think so, 3 down & one to go. What team could use a defenceman (Corvo) & two forwards (Condra & Conacher) & what would they be willing to give back for them? Not very much, unfortunately. And if you add JOB, SDC & Petersson it’s still not worth much, sad considering there was such high hopes for some of these guys. I don’t know any team that would trade quality to Ottawa for quantity.

The Sens were lucky to get out of that first period with a tie last night. They still have to work on managing the puck better as a team. I have no idea what is going on with Spezza but he looks lost most of the time & he still leads all forwards in scoring, go figure. If they can ever start playing a puck possession game, reduce the penalties & shots on net & continue to score they will be very hard to beat. If not, they will be easier to beat, you can’t continue to give the puck away & not expect that teams will take advantage of it, Chicago certainly did.

    • 010101111010101011110101010101

Joltin’ Joe Corvo signed with Ottawa for peanuts – no one else wanted him last summer.

Now that he has fallen to Brian Lee status – no one else will want him now.

    • Sandy

So you would sooner have Kassian in the lineup than Condra? Wow…

    • Jacques

Condra, to me isn’t an important piece, we can do without him.

    • Jacques

Would love to know since the start of the year what the shots are against the Sens when Spezza is on the ice. Maybe Yost will let us know.

  • Thor02
  • Sandy

I may have missed something.. but when I first bring up the home page.. the latest article I see is the Sens-Blue Jackets highlights…
Anyone else have this as well?

  • SuckitPhaneuf

    Michalek Spezza Zibby
    Ryan Turris MacArthur
    Pageau Greening Conacher
    Neil Smith Condra
Just set the lines and let them play together for 10 games

    • JBL11

Smith has looked pretty solid so far this year. I think he deserves the 3C position more than Pageau at this point. Love the kid, but he’s still young.

  • hq8

hmm…kinda split about all this trade talk regarding the sens. i feel the solution is in-house and requires simple creative tweaking to fix.
it starts with giving Chris Phillips less than 15 minutes in a game and giving Methot more. also, they have to really talk to cowen. guy needs to stop being so jumpy. i thought in last nights game, he was almost scared of the puck, atleast at the start. you cant be scared to play in this league, its the fastest way out of it. hell you can commit glaring mistakes and still stay long enough. but if you are scared of the puck, dont know what can help you then.
When i see Borocop play, i notice one thing: no headless chicken mode running around trying to kill people. I think thats a step that makes him this much closer to cementing a spot. Also, doesnt try to do too much either and never shies away from physical play. great signs from a 139th overall pick from 2008. Cowen needs to learn from that and adapt. Cowen is lucky in this case too because he has a bigger body and is more gifted, he just needs to simplify and be confident.
also, i think the sens get a real kick out of beating montreal and also beating them up. i feel like smith, neil, gryba, phillips and methot really get a jump out of it. and now it looks like they have got lehner excited too. gallagher should definitely re-think because the way he got owned yesterday, it didnt matter how much everyone praises his heart, he got made to look quite easily push-able. and i think that was the underline to the sens win. they gave Mtl a lot of chances, and Mtl will get that with their speed and more even spread of skill on defense (i think), but what Mtl lacks big time and even more importantly is size. 8 of their guys are under 6′ – thats not going to win you nasty games. especially when the guy they depend on the most is also diminutive. the sens owned Mtl in the hit game, especially gallagher who they absolutely pulverized every chance they got.

    • JBL11

I agree with your Cowen assessment. Missed a lot of time last year, missed training camp, lost Gonchar. His confidence isn’t quite there yet. Funny, I almost feel like Gonchar has been missed more than Alfie so far this year. Have to believe that 55 was a calming presence back there.

  • Tony Gallo

Really hoping BM can shop around for a proper winger for Spezza. Being the creative sort Spez is, he abosutely needs a “straight forward” type of sniper… not another creative sniper like Ryan. I’m glad the Ryan has great chemistry with Turris and MacA, but we really do need some talent playing with Spez.

  • Jacques

I hope that people don’t think that our team has turned the corner just yet. We were outplayed in these two wins. I hope Murray is still looking to pull something off. Lehner is so good that he’s camouflaging some major deficiencies.

  • Jacques

If MacTavish is giving Bryzgalov more than 1 million a year he’s the worst GM in hockey. That franchise is for the birds , MacTavish and Lowe not much brain power there. They have about 6-7 million in cap space now, must be another trade coming too, you would think.

That Smid trade was bad. Lol

  • 65kwhissell19

hearing oilers are just blowing everything up now. there saying hemsky is on his way out now to. hemsky for 2 players

    • Tony Gallo

that was generated from a fake twitter account… (if you’re refering to schenn + Simmonds for Hemsky)

  • Tony Gallo

With Smid gone… one has to wonder if a larger deal is coming down on Edmonton. My gut tells me Cowen may be involved… but according my friend has pretty much shut that thought on me… looks like earlier talks with Ottawa are fizzling… but he said talk is heating up at work with Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Toronto

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

I’ve been meaning to say this for a while, but it’s kind great to see Jesse Winchester back in the NHL, and producing to boot.

    • MikeS

Cody Ceci’s also off to a good start.

He’ll be on this team next year.

Just caught the EDM/CGY deal to clear up EDM cap space. How can a team with all sorts of defensive issues give up a capable defender like Smid? He’s a young and hard-working guy with an absolutely great contract. Bryzgalov may be somewhat vindicated this year with how bad Philedelphia looks so far, but i’m still shocked EDM couldn’t find another option to clear up the cap space. Hell, they might as well give up Hemsky if they’re intent on dumping a quality player. At least with Hemsky, they’re not giving up someone that would be an important player in the future. Shocked. I’ve mostly like what Murray has done with OTT, but i’m certainly appreciating him a lot more tonight!

    Keep calm. Stay the course.
    Fun facts -
    1) Karlsson who has been weak defensively, is just starting to get back to his old self. His defense and decision making is only going to improve.
    2) ottawa is 8th in the league in scoring
    3) ottawa had a rough schedule to start and I think it really threw their team game off. I think they are only starting to get their chemistry back. Their next 6 games look pretty winnable. They could easily go 4-2 in those games and find themselves at 10-8-4 and most likely in a playoff position.
    4) Cowen has been struggling. I think his passing has been bad. He often looks a little lost out there. That being said, he has only played 30 some games the past two seasons and 100 or so in his career. He’s a big young defenceman who needs to grow into his body. Just for comparison at Cowen’s age (22 years 9months)
    Zdeno Chara – 149 games 4 goals 14 assists minus 34
    Jared Cowen – 106 games 8 goals 13 assists plus 1

Hope to see the Game Day Post including the Lineup very soon.
Lehner should continue his superb goaltending , and let’s get some positive
work from our defensive brigade, who still need more fine tuning.

    GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!
