Zibanejad Recalled From AHL

This morning, the Ottawa Senators announced that forward Mika Zibanejad has been called up from Binghamton of the American Hockey League.

Zibanejad’s demotion caught most off guard at the start of the season but the kid went down to the AHL, worked hard, led the team in scoring and is now back up to the big team where he belongs.  The Senators are on the ice for practice at 11:00 AM this morning.

Mika has been freed.

    • Jacques

Good one , I’m on board. He’ll be coming soon,as well. He can really play. Can’t wait for the Ceci Era to begin.

      • Sandy

I don’t think it will be this season. The Sens have trouble in the defensive end of the rink as it is now…… don’t need a young offensive D-man who has a lot yet to learn in his defensive game joining that mess..

        • Jacques

He’ll be with the big team by the end of the year. Cowen has more severe issues if you ask me. Ceci has looked good in the AHL.

        • Conor_smythe

I dunno Sandy. Why would we play Gryba over Ceci at this point. Doesn’t look like Gryba is doing too well, and Ceci projects to be a better player.

Not to mention, an injury is sure to happen. I don’t think there’s many players in Bingo higher on the callup chart, maybe Claesson. But realistically, the team would rather ‘get a look’ at Ceci than anyone else.

I could see at least a 9 game tryout for Ceci at some point this year.

As far as “a lot to learn on his defensive game”… you could apply that statement to anyone on our roster not named Marc Methot.

  • ChronicallyInjured

Undefeated for the rest of the season. Calling it.

    • SebFromHawk

      #sarcasm

  • QSenFan

Can’t wait to see where Pmac inserts him in practice. My guess: centering condra and kassian on 4th line with some pp and pk time.

    • Carrai

That would be an unmitigated disaster – give him some wingers to work with – at least Greening

  • Cassidaus

I believe he leads the team in points at the moment, tied for number one in assists, but the leader in goals right now is Mike Hoffman.

  • TookieIs100PercentRight

    Finallly!
Now we can get back to winning!

  • xN1Cx

This is some good news! I hope he gets third line minutes with some looks on the PP. Put him on the point!

  • Alcatraz

Good news, I noticed at the end of last game PMac dropped Macarthur down to 3rd line and had Greening up with Turris. Using that as a small guide what if we saw:

    Greening-Spezza-Michalek
    Conacher-Turris-Ryan
    Macarthur-Zibanejad-Condra
    Smith-Grant-Neil

    • my2sens

If that is the case, those are sexy lines.

If the Sens can manage to stay out of the box, HIT the net, DRIVE the net, we will become dangerous fast.

Detroit – we are coming in hot!

      • Jacques

They’d be sexier with Condra on the sidelines, Honestly! Pageau in that spot would be sexier. At least he can hit an OPEN NET!

        • Sandy

According to McLean… Pageau has a minor injury. His size is a disadvantage against the larger teams… the next 4 games.
I hope Zibby can bring some intensity to the team .. it is dramatically lacking.

And no… they are not sitting Condra..

Just out of curiosity – does anyone know how they were lining up in Bingo? Curious to know who Zibby was playing with.

    • Alcatraz

top line I believe with Stone and Hoffman

    • NickofTime

1st line in Bingo before Stone got hurt was:
Puempel – Zibanejad – Stone … which is why I would like to see Stone replace Condra asap to add more size to the lineup but also more scoring potential.

      • Jacques

I agree Condra’s utility is coming to an end!

      • JAY79

        Isn’t Stone injured?

        • Sandy

          Yes he is…

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Finally, the plug in our bottom six depth has returned. Hopefully we can generate more offense on all four lines now, because so far this season we’ve been a one line team. The org really underrates Mika. I thought he was one of our best forwards last season.

  • NickofTime

First, I wrote one down and two to go when Da Costa was sent to Bingo & now I hope to see two down & one to go when Pageau is sent to Bingo. I have often said since training camp that this team could not win in the NHL regular season with two very small centres in Pageau & Da Costa & we have seen that proven. Now that PM has his centres in Spezza, Turris, Zibanejad & Grant, strength down the middle with Z. Smith as a spare how does he line up his wingers?

Second, it’s too bad that Stone is injured, he could replace Condra & create a better 3rd line. Or BM/PM could also bring up Hoffman or Robinson to replace Condra & give that 3rd line a little more size & scoring since Condra can’t seem to hit a barn door. Or, I would put Grant on RW with Zibanejad, he’s played RW in Bingo before & insert Robinson on the 4th line. Buddy has great size but is also a very fast skater with some offence against Detroit.

    My Guess:
    Conacher – Spezza – Michalek
    MacArthur – Turris – Ryan
    Greening – Zibanejad – Grant
    Condra – Z. Smith – Neil/Pageau/Kassian

    • SenaWalrus

No need to put any slash next to Neil… no way he ever sits unless he can’t stand.

  • spezzerman

People act like the Sens org has been unfairly holding him back. He has played 29 AHL games for crying out loud and more NHL games than AHL games.

If the org underrated Mika they would have traded him by now.

  • Tooks

Why even send him down to begin with, only to bring him up 8 games later?!?
    Sens management signs of fail!
Happy he’s back maybe he bring scoring to that 3rd lline now!

    • Jacques

He obviously wasn’t ready out of the gate – best to get him lots of playing time in the minors.

      • Carrai

And Decosta and Pageau were ready out of the gate? – very poor player management there – The Euge’s hands were all over this one

    • boom

If you swap Condra and Greening, that is what I think i heard on the radio, although I like your lines better.
And, as far as calling Zibby back up now, I agree – think it looks bad on the Sens.

  • Alcatraz

Because we kept bringing up his hot start…..Silfverberg has been relegated to 4th line, Etem taking his place….

Stealing this from Erin Nicks..This Mika move sure reeks of “Hey look over here Media, look what we did” to pull distraction away from playing Alfie tomorrow

    • Tooks

Maybe a good talk with Alfie is what Karlsson needs, he’s going to eat dinner there (At the Alfredsson’s) prior to the game. I dont doubt he misses his mentor and knowing Alfie, he’s gonna tell Erik what he needs to get him back on track. He’ll just ask that Erik waits after the game to start dominating… :P

  • ZibbyFan

Yea! G’luck Zibby. And, go SENs.

  • A-Train

Called out, sent down, then called up for a big game at a time when there are questions about this team …. great move. We’ll see if Zibby can seize the moment.

    • Tooks

Ya he needs to show up, its his chance to show the Sens made a mistake by sending him down. Would be terrible for Zib to come up and be invisible. Has to make an impact.

  • T K

I suspect that this whole process was engineered by management to thank DaCosta for his loyalty (increased pay) and to protect him from being claimed from waivers (less likely now that the season has begun)

  • hq8

they better show up tomorrow or else the snowball effect looms.
i think they should try Mika on Spezza’s wing…but then cory has played pretty good and loves to go to the net more than any sens player in the whole organization.
anyways…..tomorrow a new rivalry begins. sens will need to be careful against detroit’s top line, zetterberg looked beastly last night against SJS. Howard has had a good start too.

    • Alcatraz

      Agreed
We need to come in and try and show Detroit who is boss in this division. We can’t be intimidated and we need to play our game. Keep in midn this is also a very important game for maclean. His old mentor is coaching on the other side and after a nomination and Adams win, I think maclean would like to show Babcock a thing or two

    • Tooks

I think our D are going to get a severe dose of catchupitis, with our slow moving big bodies, the Datsyukian will thrive.

Lehner is gonna have to stand on his head again…

  • Alcatraz

Anyone find it weird Maclean said Zibanejads call up was due to a minor Pageau injury?
    #lieingthroughyourteeth

    • SensChirp

Didn’t like that at all. Almost seemed a tad immature. I mean, even if Pageau is injured, you could still say Mika went down, worked hard, led team in scoring and can help this team.

      • Alcatraz

And if the whole point of sending MZ down was to send a message, I’m pretty certain a minor injury replacement call up is not the right time to bring him up, since technically he should go back when Pageau is healthy.

      • hq8

uhoh SC taking the coach’s comments personally….
in all seriousness, it could be a ploy for Zib to still prove himself in-game so that he actually stays instead of a singly game yo-yo

      • Tooks

        From Jakubec…
Senators head coach Paul MacLean says Mika Zibanejad is here because of a minor injury to Jean-Gabriel Pageau.
Zibanejad will be considered for the lineup tomorrow, but does not sound like he is up with the Senators to stay.

        • TookieIs100PercentRight

          *FACEPALM*
Why are they messing with this kid’s head? I won’t be shocked if he walks once he’s a free agent with the way things are going.
          TOOKS100% OUT!!!!!!!

  • Andersonfan40

I know that the Senators have alot of centermen already but just wondering. Can
Shawn Matthias play as winger also?
Kind of like to see Murray trade for Matthias.

    • hq8

lol you want another guy to come here and show up zibanejad for the 3C spot???

  • hq8

Phillips is ufa at the end of this season. wonder how the sens will handle this in the near half. what’s the worst that can happen? them trying to trade him at the deadline? if the record is shit then would that be palatable?
the reason i ask is that either Borocop or Ceci could be in his roster spot, if not now, then soon, especially if Ceci keeps lighting it up.

    • Tooks

I dont see any contenders dishing our prospects or picks for Phillips…He wouldnt add anything to a team that is contending for a Cup, would probably bring mistakes more than anything.

      • The Apostle

Agreed. Plus he has a limited NTC which will limit the number of suitors even further. Let him play out this year, see what he’ll take to be a 7/8 dman next year and if we don’t like the number let him walk.

  • http://bftc-ehm.forumotion.com/ argun31

    Michalek – Spezza – Conacher
    MacArthur – Turris – Ryan
    Greening – Zibanejad – Condra
    Z.Smith – D.Grant – C.Neil

    • matsoukas45

Why everyone puts Condra on the third line all the time.Condra at best is a fourth liner, can`t score isn`t physical what does he bring once ottawa younger players in the system are ready he will be gone.

      • hq8

he brings resilience, durability, hockey smarts, penalty killing, offensive zone pressure even if it doesnt show up in points.

        • matsoukas45

We have enough penalty killers, and what offensive zone pressure does he bring he is not hard on the body and resilience I don`t notice that about his game.

      • sprucesens

End of year hopes for me….

        Michalek-Spezza-Conacher
        MacArthur-Turris-Ryan
        Greening-Zibanejad-Hoffman
        Robinson-Smith-Neil

        Methot-Karlsson
        Cowen-Ceci
        Wiecioch-Gryba/phillips
Condra traded for a mid round pick 3rd or 4th
        Kassian I dunno. healthy scratch.
Phillips traded, or swap in and out on bottom pair. Hope he retires next year, as a sen though. And leaves door open for Ceci.
We’d have 3 very good scoring lines, and one big and still talented enough 4th line that can grind, and pot some goals.

        • Sandy

They are NOT trading Condra.. He’s the best defensive forward they have.. You know.. they do need those as well. Sure he can’t score.. but he’s not on the ice to score.. he is on the ice to prevent scoring..

          • sprucesens

condra’s lifespan on this team is coming to a close. within 2 years condra will be gone. Our plethora of more talented players that can also play defensively will out perform him, and he will be one of the players that contributes the least to team success. Neil isn’t going anywhere until he retires most likely. Greening at least has size and can bring some offense, and can be moved to any line and not look TOO out of place.
Time to ask, who do you keep off the team so condra CAN play. Stone, puempel, prince, pageau, Hoffman, zibanejad, robinson, lazar… and the list will keep growing. He’s not the best defensive forward. He’s used the most on penalty kills and when we want to preserve a lead. Because frankly, they don’t really care if he gets hurt blocking shots. He doesn’t offer anything else to the team. He’s willing to do it, because it keeps him in the league. So its a win win currently. But he will not be on the team for any longer than 2 more years max.
I for one would prefer every single one of those prospects getting a shot over condra. Why have zib centering someone who will NEVER score. Seems like a waste of a 6th overall pick, and condra is too small for the 4th line, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen him knock over even a 5’8 player with a hit. He’s good at intercepting the pass between the D when they cycle it back and forth. That’s it.
Also, the PK has been brutal this year, and if it keeps up, there won’t be many saying he’s that good of a penalty killer, and just maybe it is stellar play of Andy and Lehner making everyone else look good when they actually do keep the puck out…

  • Mat

Anyone pick Cammalleri in their pools? He’s on pace for a record breaking season according to TSN… Move over Stamkos! lol http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=2476

    • hq8

lol last night was his first game back. hold your horses.

  • Hax

Would love to know what’s going on behind closed doors here. But since that’s next to impossible I’ll just be happy to see Zibanejad back and hope he plays great. Also hope if there is an injury to Pageau that it’s not serious. He needs to be playing top minutes in Bingo for a while.

  • Alcatraz

    Slowly winning me back:
“Daniel Alfredsson says his kids sport many different NHL jerseys. Asked if that included Leafs: ‘You’ve got to draw the line somewhere.’”

  • 383

Sooooo is Rockin’ Robin starting tomorrow?!
    Or is Andy?

    • Tooks

I believe it was already announced that Lehner gets the start?

      • SensChirp

Did not announce a goalie this morning.

        • Tooks

Where the hell did I see that then?

          • SensChirp

Based on your avatar, I’m gonna guess it was a wee bit of wishful thinking.

          • Alcatraz

I made a joke to call up Z-Bad, start Lehner to help us compete in the battle of the swedes with the Red wings? lol

  • Hax

Not sure how I’d build the bottom six at the moment. Zibanejad has looked really good with Neil on his wing in the past and I think Greening is a good match. But every time I type out Greening-Zibanejad-Neil I feel like it’s a waste of Zibanejad on a “fourth line”. Maybe Condra on RW instead as argun31 suggested? Would love to steal Conacher and have 14-93-89 but he’s looked too good on the first line.

    • Alcatraz

Personally I would revisit old lines in order to find new ones
      Greening-Spezza-Michalek
      Conacher-Turris-Ryan
      Macarthur-Zibanejad-Condra/Neil
      Smith-Grant-Neil/Condra

    • Tooks

And according to Jakubec, Zib aint up longterm so I think he only see’s spot duty on the 4th line.

  • 383

I obviously don’t have a problem with Rockin’ Robin-but why not start Andy after Lehner had a questionable game?
I’m cool with it either way!
Huge game tomorrow night, let’s get jacked!!!
    GO SENS GO!!!

    • Tooks

I think they will go with Andy according to this:

Who’s hot: Craig Anderson, the expected starter for the Senators on Wednesday, has stopped 74 of 79 shots (.937 save percentage) in winning his past two starts.

  • SensChirp

Interesting to hear that the Senators have finally settled their dispute with Dany Heatley. Maybe a little extra spending money for Eugene? Or a little less?

    https://twitter.com/SunGarrioch/status/392720700135325696

    • Alcatraz

Oh Bruce, how is that exclusive lol you didn’t give any real details or inight. I can do the same:

EXCLUSIVE: Maclean settles on starting goalie for tomorrow night’s game vs Detroit. Details not yet revealed.

      • Millennium

He’s the organization’s mouthpiece. They tell him its settled with no info. Hence the exclusive. Garrioch is a shill, and is not worth anything except the info the club feeds him because they want it leaked.

        • Alcatraz

          touche, and fully agree

    • Robert Cyr

My guess, is that the $4million dollar bonus, paid to Heatley, was chopped in half and Heatley had to pay back $2 million dollars, to Melnyk who took Heatley to court for collusion with the San Jose Sharks!

      Snoopy Senior

  • Alcatraz

Kind of playing off of Chirp the other day. Which player do you think is best primed to breakout/turn it around after an average start to the season?

    • Millennium

I get the feeling it won’t be one player, it will be a line. Something will click, or a change will be made that works, and a line will start clicking. Specifically, I’m thinking of that first line.

That said, MM and Macarthur could use big games soon. Mac’s stats have been good, but his points are missing. MM is sorta the opposite; his points are ok-ish, but his stats are junk.

    • Conor_smythe

      Cowen

he hasn’t shown anything special, but we all know what he’s capable of

      • Jason Brose

playing time is needed, more minutes he plays the better he gets

    • Aaron 2.0

Spezza. It can’t be easy playing after basically missing a year of hockey with back surgery. His point totals are okay so far, but, he’ll eventually start carrying way more possession, I think.

  • Conor_smythe

Macarthur should get a shot at 1st line wing.

Yes, I know he’s shown chemistry with Turris. But the way Turris is playing, he will have chemistry with anyone.

It just doesn’t seem like there’s a real “possesion” guy on the first line. and we have 2 of them on the 2nd line, so why not split them up. Spezza would Benefit from Macarthur’s style of play. Michalek would benefit from Turris’ style of play.

where that leaves bobby ryan, I dont know. Maybe we can double shift him and drop conacher down to 3rd line (genius)

    • Hax

Not sure there are many better possession guys in the NHL than Spezza. Unless you mean something different by that term.

Agree that Turris can play with anyone right now though.

      Maybe:

      MacA-Spezza-Michalek
      Conacher-Turris-Ryan

      or

      MacA-Spezza-Conacher
      Michalek-Turris-Ryan

      • Alcatraz

He’s playing off the new “posession” metrics ie Corsi in which Spezza has not favored well this year.
Spezza isn’t the issue on that line

        • Hax

          Ah.

        • hq8

spezza is great at individual puck possession. turris on the other hand promotes great line puck possession hence the amazing corsi numbers for all his linemates too. part of it has to do i think from my limited viewing is that turris is safer defensively, has better wheels and maybe a little better in the neutral zone.

i dont think macarthur is going to work with spezza very well. spezza needs a true sniper and that means eventually bobby ryan is going to find his way next to him.

what they maybe really should try and this is because they have shown chemistry before:
          ryan-spezza-conacher
          mac-turris-MM9

          • Alcatraz

The possession numbers is based on shot attempts. Its been simple as I’ve watched the games. Turris has held the puck longer, cycled and is controlling the play. There for his corsi numbers are high because he is limiting the opposing teams chances. They sustain some pressure. Spezza on the other hand has scored more points because he is more of a risk/reward guy and will enter the zone and “try” to do more. Cross crease passes, drop passes, take someone one on one etc.

For this reason Spezza numbers aren’t there, but also shows why he has more points

Playing style I would be surprised if Spezza had better corsi numbers at the end of the eyar against Turris even if Spezza puts up 25 more poitns

Regarding Michalek vs macarthur, I’m in the opposite boat, I’d like to create 3 trios

            Spezza-Michalek
            Turris-Ryan
            Zibanejad-Macarthur

          • Voice Of Reason

I too thought about spreading out the offense and experimenting with possibly these line combinations:

            MacArthur-Spezza-Conacher
            Greening-Turris-Ryan
            Michalek-Zibanejad-Pageau
            Neil-Smith-Condra

I will admit that the first line is not ideal. I like Conacher but I don’t think his style compliments Spezza very well. On the upside, I do like that 2nd and 3rd line very much. I think Greening could flourish on this fast skillful line. Dropping Michalek on the 3rd line with two young speedy linemates could see some chemistry develop between these guys even if Pageau is more effective at centre.

            So we’d end up with 3 offensive lines and 1 defensive/crash line.Worth a shot I think.

        • Conor_smythe

NO! I’m not a fan of advanced stats. Hockey has too many intangibles. its not like baseball. There’s way too much going on. advanced stats are interesting, AFTER the fact. but not a good predictor of anything.

Hax was right. I agree that Spezza is a good possession guy himself, but he could use some help. Macarthur is better possession guy than MIchalek IMO, and could offer Spezz some support in all 3 zones.

          • hq8

well i will disagree slightly because advanced stats do reveal if the foundation of a team’s game is solid or not and how much is the team dominating the opposition when its not scoring. this in turn can predict if the team will have trouble eventually in a season or playoffs. for examples, the leafs impending doom last year was always predicted based on what their advanced stats were showing up to be, even though they were one of the highest scoring teams in the league with a goalie who was looking more and more comfortable as a starter. but as with this year, their corsi caught up to them in a bad way and culminated in them filibustering in 10 minutes when leading 4-1 in gm7.

        • Millennium

Well, the Corsi debate aside, Spezza has been mediocre for large stretches of time this season. Aside from 6 points in 2 games, he’s struggled to be consistent. Historically, Spezza is big on possession, but this season has been a slow start for him. And I say that as someone who watches the games, not the stats.

        • Tooks

No he isnt, the issue is Michalek, I would drop Michalek down with Turris so he can play lesser comp and actually find his game.

Spezza and Conacher shoudnt be split, CC89′s points are nothing to write home about but its the little things he does that makes space for Spezza. He’s one of the very few who goes to the net hard and regularly demands double team and wreaks havoc everywhere, leaving Spezza some space to find a trailing Karlsson or to blast it on net!

      • Tooks

l’d def try your 2nd option.

        MacA-Spezza-Conacher
        Michalek-Turris-Ryan

Ya not sure Turris is better at possession than Spezza. You have to remember opposing teams key on Spezza…not Turris. MM9 isnt helping Spezza much in terms of creating space or going into traffic, taking out a guy or two…CC89 does that and hence why Spezza got 3 goals while playing with 89.

CMac could be tried on the 1st line to see if it helps out Spezza even more, personnaly IMO, Michalek aint a top 3 player, should be 2nd line from the start.

What is missing is the drive and intensity from the Sens game. If they get it back tomorrow.. then they have a chance to keep it close. Control Zetterberg & Datsyuk is a must for a chance..

    • Mat

I don’t think our team is anywhere close to matching a team like Detroit right now. They’ll have to do more than keep Zetterberg and Datsyuk in check to have a chance to win. Personally, I’m lowering my expectations to “will Neil finish his checks on Alfie?”…

  • s3nsfan

Personally I like Ryan with Turris, they’ve shown they work better together.

    I wouldn’t mind seeing :
    9-19-14
    89-7-6
    89-93-25
    28-15-22

But hey, I’ll leave the line juggling to Maclean, he knows what he’s doing

    • Hax

Flip Michalek and Greening and that’s not bad. Though would still love to see an actual player on the fourth line instead of Kassian but you could give Greening a few extra shifts perhaps.

And agree that MacLean will figure it out.

    • Mat

I agree with Hax. I wouldn’t mind not seeing 28. He’s a shitty insurance policy don’t even want in the first place..

      • Tooks

There is a reason Maclean keeps Kassian there, cuz no one else has been doing better, If Pageau or Da Costa or JOB would have stepped up they would be there…they did not, hence why Kassion plays.

Kassian is actually playing well, he’s not a liability when he’s out there and I’m sure he boosts guys confidence up by just dressing. We all know how fast an NHL game can get out of hand and if it would, who would defend our stars? Pageau? Conacher? Condra? Neil and Smith and Smith is a bit of a joke, kinda like fighting Avery. Need Kassian, maybe not every night but still need him.

TSN are on the ball as always. Their first video clip is apparently an interview with Senators forward Daniel Alfredsson.

Can’t believe Chirp missed that story.

havent had a chance to read comments today. but here are the highlights from the last bingo game where zibby had 1g2a

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAk9_nAtQrg

as i said in a previous post. zibby on the point for his slap shot is what we can really use. or him on the right side taking the stamkos-one timers.

Schneider completely ripped a couple. Don’t know much about him. NHL potential?

Looks like J.G.Pageau has an undisclosed injury, and will not play.
Joe Corvo to draw back in, with Gryba a healthy scratch.
Anderson to start according to Ottawa Sun, but Coach has not confirmed so far .

Mika Zibanejad to play Centre on Line 4 with Grant on LW and Condra on RW.

Will be a very emotional game for Alfredsson, as he plays his first game
against his old teammates, where he was a great leader and mentor !!

    GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
