Senators Put Varone on Waivers

A day after a loss at the hands of the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Ottawa Senators shuffled their roster a little bit.

Phil Varone, who was a pleasant training camp surprise but hasn’t done much during his limited ice time in the regular season, was placed on waivers for the purposes of a demotion to Binghamton. Varone has been in and out of the Ottawa line up so far this season, appearing in three games and averaging just under 8 minutes a game.

Assuming he clears waivers, Varone will join the team in Binghamton on Monday.

It may also pave the way for Curtis Lazar’s return to Ottawa.  Lazar has appeared in three games with the Binghamton Senators, and scored a goal the other night with General Manager Pierre Dorion in attendance.  The Senators are only carrying 12 forwards now with the demotion of Varone so it makes sense to bring someone else up ahead of their three game swing through Western Canada.

It is a little bit strange that the move hasn’t been announced yet though.  It’s possible the Senators may plan to just carry 12 forwards and 7 defenceman on this road trip.

We’ll find out later this morning if Lazar is getting the call.

The Senators are on the ice for practice in Vancouver later today.
