Turris, Karlsson Lead Senators Over Leafs

FIVE QUICK THOUGHTS

-Last night’s game should serve as a helpful little reminder that there really are no easy wins in the NHL these days.  Even when the opposition is as terrible as the Toronto Maple Leafs are, you still have to put the work in if you want those two points.  Dave Cameron discussed that in his post-game press conference and you can be sure he reminded the team after last night’s game.  The Senators got the job done but that three goal second period should serve as a bit of a wake up call.

-Kyle Turris is playing some damn good hockey lately.  Consecutive two goal games and now has seven points in his last five games.  Watching Turris, you can tell he’s a confident hockey player right now and his comfortable with the puck on his stick.  He played more than 21 minutes last night and had five shots on goal.  The Senators are going to be counting on continued production from Turris down the stretch.

-One point back. One game in hand.  The Senators are right there now.  The Boston Bruins are on the tail end of a tough back to back today in Tampa Bay so it’s going to be another nervous night of scoreboard watching for Sens fans. And actually, while we’re talking about scoreboard watching, that Blues-Red Wings game that’s just underway is worth keeping an eye on too.  The Senators are just four points back of Detroit. Incredible.

-Injuries were a bit of a concern last night.  Both Milan Michalek and Matt Puempel left the game and did not return.  Full day off for the Senators so we won’t have any injury updates until tomorrow night but it’s safe one or both of those players may miss tomorrow’s game against San Jose.  Zack Smith was recalled from his conditioning assignment and is expected to play tomorrow night.

-Erik Karlsson is on another level right now.  Norris worthy, in fact.  Another multi-point game, bringing him to 58 points on the season, which leads all defenceman. Kris Letang is the next closest with 54. A month ago it would have been ridiculous to mention Karlsson in the Norris Trophy conversation but right now he’s certainly in the discussion. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to get my free hamburger and Big Mac.
