Senators Sign David Legwand

Senators Sign David Legwand

After losing Jason Spezza, you knew Bryan Murray was looking for a way to fill the void left at the centre ice position and this afternoon he did just that. The Ottawa Senators have signed David Legwand to a two year contract worth $3 million a season.

Legwand has played 977 games in the National Hockey League, picking up 577 points along the way.  Until a trade deadline deal to the Detroit Red Wings this past season, he had played his entire career with the Nashville Predators.  He’s certainly not flashy but what he does bring is a capable offensive game and defensive responsibility.  He should fit in well with the hard-working identity the Senators are going for this season.  This is a solid pick up that gives the Senators some depth down the middle.

Will be interesting to see if Murray still has another move up his sleeve or if this added $3 million puts the Sens at their internal budget for this season.

More in a little bit.

  • karlssens

Meh, not bad. Need one mlre forward though.

  • karlssens

Basically just a signing for some insulation for two years. Need one more forward badly.

  • markukihokej

Good deal, now extend Ryan !

    • sbs138

I can’t see it. do you honestly think the Sens will let that happen? Eugene did say when referring to retiring Alfie’s number “if I was a betting man, I would bet on it”. https://twitter.com/SunGarrioch/status/40727400728980275

    • Kohlmanator

      Not gonna happen.

    • jfk911

This would be now the second team he couldnt wear 11 cause of Alfie in Detroit he wore 17 because Alfie had 11

      • markukihokej

But in Detroit he had to wear 17 because 11 was occupied by Alfredsson. Here, it is not the case, nobody wears 11 and this number is not retired by sens

        • TookieIs100PercentRight

No chance, fans would flip out. Post-game would be full of angry guys going: “Guy wears #11 and didn’t produce, missed a defensive assignment. This is the next Alfie?” It would never and and would be pushed by the Sun.

    • SensDominate

No chance, I’m sure Legwand doesn’t want to start his career in Ottawa with such a mis-step.

  • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Two years at three a piece… I’ll take it

    • SensFanInMTL

Of course we will. We’re on a budget!

But even if Melnyk wasn’t that cheap, it’s a solid price without ridiculously giving what Kovalev made. Betcha Legwand does decent and even better thant what Kovy brought.

  • laffin681021

Solid signing. Now for that forward in our mystery trade and hope it’s not Chris Stewart

  • http://batman-news.com Johnny Skills

Love this deal. He’s a battler for sure.

  • FistsofNeil25

So with this signing, I’m wondering where Lazar fits in. Maybe one Stone, Ryan or Chiasson is moved over to the left hand side.

    MacArthur-Turris-Stone
    Ryan-Zibanejad-Chiasson
    Michalek-Legwand-Lazar
    Hoffman-Smith-Neil

    Greening, Condra, etc

I think there’s definitely a quality for quantity trade in the works or Lazar will be headed back for another year of junior hockey.

    • silver seven

great signing , and yeah you would think someone is on the move. i like this line up a lot actually.

    • Sensnation

Greening and Condra are on the block, so hopefully that’s close to our starting roster.

    • ProfessorPower

Flip Chiasson in a package for Kane And move Ryan back to RW

    • SensFanInMTL

That actually doesn’t look that bad at all.

  • Millennium

Wonder what this means for Pageau?

    • silver seven

i suppose it means hes first in line for call up, kids still young, we needed a guy of legwands experience in the line up

      • Millennium

Perhaps, but two years is a long time to wait for a guy whose already had a (small) stint in the NHL. I just wonder if he’s the prospect they think about moving on a deal. Unless something happens to Smith, I don’t see any C position opening up soon.

I like the Legwand signing though.

    • Kohlmanator

Greening, Smith and Pageau for Sharp and Leddy :). If only…

  • ChiassonDownTheCup

I think this signals the writing on the wall for Smith. Zibanejad, Turris, Legwand or Smith cannot be playing fourth line minutes and be as effective as the team would like. It would be a waste to play any of them as a fourth liner.

    • FistsofNeil25

      Smith is a better 4C than a 3C.

    • CrazyFish

I don’t think Smith is a waste at 4th line, he can pick up extra time on the PK.

      • Sandy

Smith can play on the 4th line.

    • silver seven

lets not forget how much mac played our “4th line” last year. this is shaping up to be a team that can rotate all 4, that should be the model (ahem lakings)

  • Kanata Knight

Hello all, first time posting LOOONG time reader. Good pickup and will help the kids play a 200 foot game

  • CrazyFish

Can’t complain about this signing, short term good cap hit and lots of experience. He’ll probably slot into the 2nd or 3rd line depending on how Zibby is playing.
I hope to hell they move Greening and Condra…

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Neither player had significant value. I’d personally hold onto Condra and hope fans stop being idiots and expecting 20 goals from him… He is a smart defensively sound player

      • CrazyFish

But easily replaceable, Condra is fine I guess at his cap hit but Greening is brutal.

      • ProfessorPower

Keeping Condra means either Stone or Lazar don;t make the team. Keeping Condra would be fucking retarded.

        • sbs138

          fucking retarded!

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Yes because I’d want either of those guys playing 5 minutes a game in the fourth line

          • ProfessorPower

so you want Condra playing 5 minutes a game? Stone will be top line with Turris or second line with Zib. Lazar playing third line with Legwand.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I want Condra playing fourth line minutes possibly with some pk time

What ever amount of minutes that equates too… If we move him I won’t lose any sleep though.. Just his contract is rather trivial so not really worth complaining about him

          • ProfessorPower

Neil is guaranteed 4th line RW whether anyone likes it or not. Milo Legwand Lazar Smith Greening Turris Macarthur can all play PK and are all better players than Condra.

          • sprucesens

haha, with pk time, condra will be 15+! lol

          • Jaskaran Purewal

They’re both centers… why on earth would we sign Legwand if we we’re gonna shift him to the wing?

  • Karlsson’s Euchre Partner

what does this mean for Zack Smith?? wouldn’t that put Turris / Legwand / Zibby as the top 3… maybe still a big trade on the way!??!

    • KingKarlsson84 – RSU is pathet

Zack Smith is a pretty good trade piece, Trade is totally possible now…

      • Karlsson’s Euchre Partner

i think that a move including Smith and Stone OR Hoffman is going down soon… probably for a D!! let’s hope for Leddy!!

        • sprucesens

smith, stone, PW for E. kane? Lazar takes 4c, continues to work on his defensive game with time on pp. Then works his way up 1 line giving us possibly the best young C core in the NHL?

          • Sokz

No thanks E Kane is a headache he thinks way too highly of himself .. No wonder the jets wanna deal him the guy acts like a fool in public ..

  • ProfessorPower

Jakester wins, might as well just give you the Hundred lol BM has done nothing to make us more of a contender so far, signing an injury prone Milo and a decent 2nd/3rd line center..as well as trading Spezza for an okay prospect(s). BIG MOVES

    • Jakester

Smith will be going to Chi-town! That’s why he hinted at Lazar playing center. The kid will be eased in at 4C or it will be Pageau’s spot!

      • ProfessorPower

with the signing you could be right, I really like Smith..good character guy. I retract my bet haha If we are trading to Chicago what do you think for?

        • Jakester

I don’t know, Leddy not needed cuz we have Karl and Ceci on that side, Hjalmarsson would nice. How bout Cowen,Smith,Greening, a prospect and a pick for Hjalmarsson and Sharp. Man would the Sens be the favoured in the EAST then. Things are taking shape, I have faith in Murray.

          • ProfessorPower

Im not sure they would want to give up Hjalmarsson – great second pairing for them, I could really see Sharp on the move. Garrioch seems to suggest Wiercioch is on his way out and Condra and Greening are trad-able assets. Getting those two guys would make us much better for sure, guaranteed playoff team imo.

          • Sensnation

Leddy is a left handed shot. In our system he’d probably play on the left side.

  • sbs138

I like it. another big, solid guy that is a battler, exactly what Murray wanted.

  • Jakester

    Great Move!

  • A-Train

News! And it’s not bad news! Good player, helps solidify things.

I just hope Zibanejad stays at centre in this mix.

    • KingKarlsson84 – RSU is pathet

I feel like Legwand and Zibanejad will probably rotate a bit between the 3rd and 2nd line

      • FistsofNeil25

This gives us a nice balance of three solid lines.

      • sprucesens

yup, it’ll be a 2a 2b scenario, which is exactly what we want

        • Shibal

This will only work if Mac can play Smith 10 minutes a night.

    • Jakester

      Very solid player.

  • Pasky

I think now we need a Q 4 Q trade to make room on our roster, otherwise Lazar and Weircioch won’t even get a chance to play on our team next year. The other thing we need is a Top 6 LW so that Michalek can play on the 3rd line and be more effective. I know everyone likes Stone, including myself, but if we can package Stone and Greening with our 2nd round pick to Winnipeg for Evander Kane our team would look a lot better.

    Kane-Zibanejad-Ryan
    MacArthur-Turris-Chiasson/Lazar
    Michalek-Legwand-Lazar/Chiasson
    Hoffman-Smith-Neil
    Pageau-Condra

    • Mat

Its funny that you say quality for quality and then suggest Greening..

      • Pasky

        Quantity for Quality

        Greening is Quantity lol

    • FistsofNeil25

Wow just saw this after posting the same thing lol

      • Pasky

We’re like in sync I guess…. Has your mom ever mentioned a long lost twin brother lol

  • clarkeinthedark

A solid signing. Still have a feeling a trade is coming though.

    • Mat

That’s the big question. I don’t want to seem greedy, I love the signing. But we still have too many 1 way contracts, and 8 NHL capable D… Something has to happen.

      • clarkeinthedark

I’m thinking a deal with the jets or hawks will happen. Us getting E Kane or Sharp in a package

  • Francis Carriere

    Love it. Nice signing Murray!

  • Harv

Turris, Z’Bad, Legwand, Smith. Not a bad center ice lineup.

  • adamie

I’ll take a crack at making my lines. Lol

Clarke MacArthur – Kyle Turris – Bobby Ryan
Milan Michalek – Mika Zibanejad – Alex Chiasson
Mike Hoffman – David Legwand – Mark Stone
Colin Greening – Zack Smith – Erik Condra / Neil

barring there are no trades being made, this would be my line up.

    • Harv

If we could depend on McLean giving Greening and Neil 4th line minutes – as in no more than 6 per game – it actually looks not too bad.

    • silver seven

honestly this line up compared to last years is better and more well rounded

      • Harv

If Milan stays healthy and Hoffman and Stone keep developing it looks like a playoff lineup at least.

Gee – maybe Bryan does know what he is doing?

    • Sensnation

I like it, just where would Lazar fit in if he’s ready? Can 1 of Stone, Ryan or Chiasson move to the left side? That’s really my only question left with this roster.

      • Pasky

I know Ryan can since he’s done it in Anaheim. My problem with that is our Top 3 RW would be Stone-Chiasson-Lazar, and that’s pretty young. Rather pick up a LW and keep Ryan where he is.

  • Sensnation

So much better than Lecavalier. Really happy with this signing as Legwand is a hard worker with some skill who can fill in the 2nd or 3rd line C role depending on how the young guys perform.

    • Senator forever

I don’t know much about Legwand as he was buried in Nashville all those years. How big is he, is he physical and defensively minded. If so I really like this lineup with him replacing Spezza. We are going to be a better team next year. Everyone should want to play defence now that Spezz is gone.

  • Pat D

could this mean a trade with chicago for sharp and leddy is possible?

    • Pasky

I think so, but if that happens then we have 9D instead of 8 so another trade would have to happen as well. Plus Leddy is LH so I don’t like they way he fits in the picture.

  • Karlsson’s Euchre Partner

he’s got the same agent as MDZ… hopefully he’s next!!

    • EK65

Haha yeaaaaah. 9th NHL Dman, here we come?

      • Karlsson’s Euchre Partner

he’s still better than Gryba / Boro / Phillips

  • FistsofNeil25

I have a feeling that we’re going to see something like Greening+Stone+Wiercioch for a left winger. Stone to his home town of Winnipeg for the head case Evander Kane.

    MacArthur – Turris – Ryan
    Kane – Zibanejad – Chiasson
    Michalek – Legwand – Lazar
    Hoffman – Smith – Neil/Condra

    • Pasky

That’s what I alluded to below, although didn’t consider throwing in Weircioch in there as well.

    • ChampIsHere

I like Weircioch but for Kane .. I’d move him

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

If they’d take that I’d run with it

    • ProfessorPower

      I would not trade Stone.

    • HamadBo$$

Lol jets would never agree to that

    • sprucesens

that’s a sexy lineup. And its still a decent amount below the cap! right around our budget. interesting to see if that’s what murray has planned. Wheeler would be a good fit too

  • rhume55

Nice. Lines are starting to feel nicely layered. Still wondering what that mystery trade involving prospects was. Is that deal now dead?

  • FBP

2.5 million in year one and 3.5 in year two. Seems weird to me considering our budget. A lot of contracts need to get done for the year after next.

    • CrazyFish

Cap will probably go up again.

      • FBP

        And maybe our budget too!

        • CrazyFish

          LOL

        • sprucesens

by that, you mean the floor right?

    • FistsofNeil25

Makes sense actually. Melnyk will have much a lot of money off the TV revenue by the end of next season.

      • Sensnation

        Exactly!

  • SensChirp

Obviously he’s not a star player or anything but after all the doom and gloom, it’s nice to have a player choose Ottawa.

    • Harv

      Doom and Gloom?

      Gee, hadn’t noticed!

    • FistsofNeil25

He’s no star but he’s a solid two-way center who can still produce. Gives us more balance at center with 2 lefties and 2 righties and the contract is perfect. This gives our line-up a much better look. Sens fans should feel good about this deal.

      • Mike

Thats a good pickup now a trade for Kane or Sharp?

    • silver seven

hey chirp, when you say choose, does that mean he turned down other offers, if so any idea who?

      • SensChirp

Tim Murray was in there as well apparently.

        • Harv

Maybe we can flip Legwand for Cody H?

          • Sensnation

You don’t sign and trade a UFA in July. That would destroy any rep we have left.

          • silver seven

doubt it, although according to steve lloyd this does not mean they are done on the trade market

        • Jakester

Than Legwand is a pretty smart guy than to choose the Sens.

    • sprucesens

actually this is a great move. Very similar to us signing macA. People will be pleasantly surprised. It also take some pressure off of zib performing in top 6 role this year. I like it a lot.

    • sens88

Agreed. Of all of the available UFAs, this is a great pickup for that amount of cash. Hopefully he can bring some leadership and experience to our young group. I’m hoping they use him as the 3rd line C and keep Zibs as 2nd line C.

    • Pasky

Also gives the team 2 years to develop younger players. I’ve said in the past this team will start to spend to be a contender after 2 more seasons. That’s when Phillips, Neil and now Legwand’s contracts are up. None of them will be resigned and our rebuild will be completed then. Legwand is essentially insulation in case Zib/Lazar/Pageau falter in the Top 9 next year or 2 and we can stay competitive.

  • FistsofNeil25

One thing is for sure, Bryan Murray has been working his ass off the last few weeks.

    • ProfessorPower

      and has done what exactly

      • Harv

Nothing. It is all DOOM and GLOOM!

      • FistsofNeil25

He’s done pretty well with the cards he’s been dealt. You think he could do better with such a strict budget? Do you expect to contend on a 55 or 56M budget? I think he’s done well all things considered.

        • Harv

Agree. His moves are starting to make sense. Jason who?

        • ProfessorPower

I have seen us add Chiasson and Legwand to our lineup. After we have lost Hemsky and Spezza, that is the extent to our changes. I am sure his job is extremely hard and the budget makes it harder. Expecting more however is not out of the question.

          • FistsofNeil25

and he’s still trying to do more.

          • ProfessorPower

which makes me nervous because I don’t know what the hell ‘more’ entails lol is it something amazing or something thats gonna hurt us even more.

          • FistsofNeil25

Probably looking for a top six LW

          • zippy

            Glad youre not GM

          • Jakester

Two guys who are much harder to play against, and Zibby will get more ice time. So far pretty good, plus two good prospects and a second rounder.

      • Heisenberg

done what? traded our captain and got the best return he could and is actively working to build our team as a more defensively sound team with the legwand signing. im sure hes not done for the summer. BM is a great GM it doesnt take a genius to see it

        • ProfessorPower

BM and great should not be n the same sentence. He is GOOD.

          • Harv

Your DOOM and GLOOM posts are becoming tiresome, PP.

          • ProfessorPower

Im saying it how it is, don’t overrate our GM. He is a really good one but there are many other GM’s in the league that are much better.

          • Harv

I respect that you are saying it how you see it not necessarily how it is.

          • ProfessorPower

so you are gonna tell me nothing? thanks Harv.

          • Sensnation

Funny how you only admit that he’s good when great is put on the table.

          • ProfessorPower

there is a big difference calling someone a great player/GM then calling them a good player/GM. You are not great until you win, this is my opinion.

          • TookieIs100PercentRight

PRetty much. We’re built in Murray’s image. Not very creative, kinda slowish with occasional flashes of brilliance (Karlsson, Ryan) and first or second round fodder at most. But hey, tickets will be cheap so that’s a plus.
            TOOKS100% OUT!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Rafi Bomb

But he hasn’t gotten much done at all. The team still looks fairly mediocre and lacks an identity. He has yet to add any high end skill or toughness so those two areas will need to be addressed over the coming weeks.

Murray still has a fair amount of work in front of him to make this team competitive or at the very least entertaining enough for fans to watch them on a regular basis.

      • Sensnation

What high end skill was he supposed to sign in UFA on a budget? I’d say our top 6 and even top 9 are pretty full now.

        • Rafi Bomb

Not through UFA, through trade. We traded Spezza and didn’t get a legitimate top six back like Tarasenko, Nichuchskin, Oshie, etc. Then with all the talk of more moves coming, and Bryan Murray explicitly stating that he has a trade in the works that should make Sens fans happy one would assume that he is looking to add a top six forward. Therefore he still needs to go and acquire a big name like Evander Kane, Patrick Sharp, Brent Burns, Patrick Marleau or Brad Marchand or a semi big name like Chris Stewart or Brayden Schenn.

          • FistsofNeil25

And he’s still trying to get a trade done. He’s not finished with this roster. Expecting tarasenko, Oshie, or Nichushkin was unrealistic.

          • Rafi Bomb

There is still a lot of work left for him to fix this team. I wasn’t a big fan of brining Michalek back, Chiasson seems like an OK piece and Legwand is an OK pick up, but those three haven’t improved the identity of our team. They are three players that can play and can do a bit of everything, but don’t really have any standout skills. We need to move away from that model because otherwise we will be stuck with the same identity issues going into next season. Fortunately they are shopping Condra and Greening which helps address that by ensuring that we don’t have an abundance of those type of players.

          • Harv

And, if who he gets is not on “your” list then he screwed up, right?

          • Sensnation

Tarasenko and Nichuchskin are top 3 talent, not top 6. Chiasson has top 6 potential with a guarantee of top 9.

There’s still a trade in the works but we don’t have many big pieces we want to trade that have value.

Hoping for a big name is 1 thing, but expecting it given our current situation is a bit too much imo.

          • Rafi Bomb

Tarasenko and Nichushkin were based off of a speculated return for trading Spezza.

At the end of the day the only thing that actually matters is what the fans think. We saw Spezza get traded for a few decent prospects and a good young player. Some fans can empathize with the situation and forgive Murray for the somewhat mediocre return. Then in order to win the fans back, Murray stated that he had a trade in the works that should make Sens fans satisfied overall with the look of this team. The names that I listed have all been rumored in trades and fit the type of player that we need and would help regain faith by Sens fans in Murray if they were acquired.

Aside from that, he has signed Michalek and Legwand who are both decent players but doesn’t really help our identity and aren’t really going to make that big of an impact on our team next season. They are better suited for a team that needs some NHL depth for a playoff run.

So as of right now, the pressure is on Murray to make some moves to give Sens fans some confidence. At this point the team doesn’t look like it has improved and isn’t more entertaining. Without something more substantial happening these are the types of moves that could lead to the organization parting ways with Murray and his staff.

          • spezzerman

I am also fan and I disagree with everything, and I mean everything, you have posted in the last hour. So, which fans perspective is more important to management, mine or yours? And how do you make that decision?

The LAST thing that matters is what the fans think. Fans like wins and pay when they come. it doesnt matter what fans think about how you go about getting wins because its impossible to get a consensus.

          • Rafi Bomb

LMAO, the fans are the customers of the organization. They are their primary revenue stream. If the Sens fans don’t like the roster and don’t find the games to be entertaining then they will stop going. If they stop going then the Sens will start losing money quickly which will force Melnyk to take action such as terminating the contracts of key personnel.

Aside from that, I really don’t care if you disagree with me. You are entitled to your opinion and there is no real point to continue our conversation if we have such divergent positions.

          • spezzerman

My point was, I’m excited about the team, you’re not. So clearly, customers have different opinions. Its impossible to make everyone happy, so you dont worry about making individual fans happy, you just build teams that win games that bring in fans.

        • ProfessorPower

the UFA pool was shit. And we are the Budget Ottawa senators, thinking we are going to pick up any big name UFA in the league is silly. Trading for that caliber player was and is the only option.

  • HamadBo$$

well here is what I think the lineup will look like

    Ryan-Turris-MacArthur
    Michalek-Zibanejad-Chiasson
    Stone-Legwand-Lazar
    Hoffman-Smith-Neil

    • AutoTurris

I have the exact same lineup set up in capgeek. Gunna be interesting to see how it does

    • FistsofNeil25

Don’t count on this line-up. Murray is still trying to make changes on the trade market.

      • HamadBo$$

I hope to God we get someone NHL ready rather than prospects, we need some experience on this team, and thats why I really like the Legwand signing

    • ill district

Hoffman is skill not checking, I’d really like to see him on the 3rd as well as on the PP.

I think Lazar stays in Bingo and we see someone like D Dziurzynski

      • zippy

Lazar can’t go to Bingo. He’ll make it here

      • HamadBo$$

As zippy pointed our, lazar can’t play in the AHL. As far as Hoffman goes, I’d rather have stone on the 3rd line with legwand because I think he can get more goals. On that line he can probably pull a 35 point season which is decent.

      • Harv

        Listen up, everyone.

LAZAR CAN NOT GO TO BINGO. HE IS TOO YOUNG.

        • joe

          Thanks Harve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • FistsofNeil25

    Jason York@jasonyork33

Just spoke with new Sen DAVID Legwand. Very excited to play in Paul Maclean’s up tempo puck possession system. Ottawa was at top of his list

    • Harv

There will be a lot of people here who will not buy that. Someone chose Ottawa and our crazy owner with the tight fists? Be still my heart!

    • TookieIs100PercentRight

Is the same up tempo puck possession system that saw the team be dramatically outshot and outchanced nearly every single night? If so, eeesh.

  • A-Train

Seems like a great guy to play with Lazar … if Lazar plays in the NHL this season.

  • Sensnation

Looking at our roster, it seems to me like the outstanding deal involves 2-3 of Greening, Condra, Smith, Wiercioch or Stone.

    • silver seven

man i hope its not stone

      • Hax

If any trade includes Stone instead of say Condra, it just means our return will be that much better. I’d like to keep Stone too, but if Murray deals him it would only be for a player that’s worth the price.

        • Sensnation

As long as that player isn’t named Stewart, I agree. Though I’d take Stewart for our 4th line extras lol.

        • ill district

If Condra skates like he did the first year or two, i have no problem. But when you see an undersized low skill player float it drives me absolutely insane. he looked horrible for most of the season. Can’t even pot an open net!

          • Pasky

The problem with Condra is that he’s perfect on the 4th line, but Neil has that spot taken for the next 2 years. So the coach puts him on the 3rd line where he misses a bunch of open nets and we hate him lol

          • Hax

Exactly. Or he puts Neil on the 3rd line and he just puts himself offside.

      • A-Train

Gotta give to get. I thought we should have sold high on Stone a year or more ago.

        • Sensnation

He’s worth more now I’d think. A year+ ago there were serious foot speed issues, now it’s been reassured he can at least hang in the NHL.

          • A-Train

Hopefully! But at the same time I kind of feel like his potential to be a huge goal-scorer has come back to earth a bit. Then again I’m not an NHL GM.

          • Sensnation

That’s the part we have yet to see. I think he’s more playmaker than sniper, but this coming year should give him plenty of minutes to show us either way.

      • ProfessorPower

trading Stone would be a horrible idea, kids gonna be great. Hopefully its Prince or Hoffman..dont move Stone Lazar or Puempel

    • Rafi Bomb

      Stone won’t get moved.

As for the rest of the players you mentioned, they are all a possibility although I don’t think there is a high chance that they move Smith as MacLean has raved about his development over the last two seasons.

Other players who could potentially get moved: Craig Anderson, Mike Hoffman, Shane Prince, JG Pageau, Derek Grant

      • Pasky

Prince, Pageau, Grant and Anderson wouldn’t free up a spot up front so they wouldn’t be the main trade pieces.

      • Sensnation

I was thinking people that currently have an NHL roster spot. All our prospects and AHL people could be moved. Hoffman I could see. Anderson appears to be a deadline deal if anything.

  • Hax

Legwand has the same agency as Ryan – wonder if that helps in any small way.

  • ill district

Happy to see this signing. Hard working defensively responsible 2 way center. Much better signing than Vinnie. Be interesting to see if Lazar makes the club – will have big impact on lineup .

  • Hax

If signing Legwand does anything to make a current player more tradeable, it’s Smith. MacLean doesn’t appear to even want Smith to play 4C so unless he’s going to play LW with Zibanejad or Legwand, I’m guessing he’s part of the rumored trade.

    • Sandy

He played 4th line centre last season. He also kills penalties. He will do so again.

      • Shibal

He played third line center last season averaging 15 minutes a game.

      • Hax

MacLean played Smith much more than just 4C. Yes, when Spezza/Turris/Zibanejad were all healthy and playing center that made Smith the de facto 4C but when any one was injured or when Zibanejad was playing wing Smith was 3C.

I’d personally love to see Smith as 4C and PK guy but I just think MacLean has a higher view of him.

  • zippy

    CHI likes Smith and Greening.

Smith or Greening and 2015 2nd for Sharp. Puts them under the cap again.

    • ProfessorPower

I could see something like that.

    • SensFanInMTL

Call it a steal and a run for the playoffs. Chicago will never part ways with Sharp. And if so, it ain’t for the likes of Smith and Greening.

      • zippy

on second thought, I agree…we’d have to add Puempel or Stone or Chiasson

      • Sandy

Sharp won’t come to Ottawa. Forget that one. He has a NTC.

  • EHMatt

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy with the signing. I’m just a little curious as to if the ‘big trade’ BM talked about was for Lecavalier or not. I seriously hope not. If that’s not the case, then is this ‘big trade’ still being discussed? I still would like to see a trade happen as long as it’s not for Lecavalier. The team still needs improvement, unless a good draft pick is our goal this year.

    • Hax

Yeah just the fact that Murray is still working on “the big trade” means it can’t possibly be for Vinnie. Not that I thought it was before, but if it’s still out there after signing Legwand that confirms it’s not for Vinnie.

    • sprucesens

lecav is now off the radar. the one? spot is now filled. Now its a Q4Q only if at all. Probably a D, Greening/condra/smith/neil, and prince/pageau or similar prospect. Not sure how much that would really give us though. Still could be a cap strapped team interested

    • Harv

My thoughts on the “big” trade is that Murray cannot get the “big” trade unless the other guy wants to trade. Who do we have to offer up? Greening, Condra? I would rather not trade Weircoch (I have no idea why the coach does not like him), Stone and Hoffman. Bad enough that Prince may be out the door. These guys all have strong potential. So, who are we really going to get for guys we really do not want?

I think the “big” trade is history and that does not bother me at all. I think the team is shaping up quite nucely to make the playoffs and let our young guys mature.

      • EHMatt

I agree with you on Wiercoch. I have a feeling that BM doesn’t follow the “fancy stats” at all but he’s pretty good for driving possession. It would be interesting to see Wiercoch play a full season with a decent partner. Cowen really dragged him down. If he does have to be included, then the return better be good.
Chirp answered my question in the comment below, looks like its still in the works. I have a feeling that the deal is with Chicago (over the cap by $2 million) or San Jose (looking to retool).

  • SensChirp

This is Murray talking about that mystery deal. Definitely still something in the works.

    • SensFanInMTL

What do you mean? There’s friggin more!?

    • A-Train

He’s trying to “get satisfaction both ways”…. Kinky old devil…

    • Stephane Cantin

Steve Lloyd with tsn: @TSNSteveLloyd: Despite Legwand signing, the #Sens are still trying to get something else done via trade.

    • my2sens

I think he’s done. He says he is satisfied with the roster…. Good signing though. Let’s get this season started!

    • Sensnation

I missed it. Is there a link to the audio yet?

    • HamadBo$$

Hey chirp do you know anything about this alex guptill guy? is he NHL ready and what kind of player is he?

      • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I think he could play isolated minutes, but is probably better served with a year in the minors

        • HamadBo$$

is he an enforcer or an occasional goal scorer?

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I’d say powerforward with above average hands… Not really a fighter

          • HamadBo$$

            Well that seems interesting :D

  • dasammy89

Murray: We continue to talk, we’ve had discussions about a trade that has gone on for a period of time now, it’s just a matter of if we can get satisfaction both ways. We probably will do something else but I do feel comfortable with the roster. I think that if we have to add we will but it looks like our young players that have been drafted by the organization and have developed within — we’ve got a couple of guys that are ready and if they get a chance I’m sure they’ll perform very well.

    • ProfessorPower

      So..something like

      Macarthur-Turris-Ryan
      Michalek-Zibanejad-Stone
      Chiasson-Legwand-Lazar
      Greening-Smith-Neil

      • dasammy89

        looks really good. Defence though

        • ProfessorPower

Ya decent, we gotta move some D first.

    • Rafi Bomb

This isn’t that great of a roster. It also doesn’t have enough toughness yet, so they need to address that over the next few weeks.

In terms of players pushing for spots, at this point we have:
Mark Stone, Curtis Lazar, Mike Hoffman, Jean Gabriel Pageau, Shane Prince, Matt Puempel, Derek Grant and David Dziurzynski

Stone and Lazar seems like locks at this point. Hoffman is on the fence. Pageau, Prince and Puempel could surprise but they are most likely playing in the AHL. Grant and Dziurzynski might see some games but there only chance to make the team is if we trade Condra and Greening and then don’t sign any other 4th liners.

      • Pasky

I wouldn’t call Lazar a lock right only only because of the amount of guys we have. There are 9 guys on 1 way contracts and then there’s Stone, Chiasson, Zibanejad, Hoffman and Pageau on 2-way contracts which make 14. Lazar doesn’t play LW so that’s 10, and I would say Chiasson, Stone & Zibanejad will be on the main roster before Lazar so that’s 13 people ahead of him. So unless there’s a trade to move out some bodies I don’t think Lazar is a lock on this team.

      • Shibal

You want toughness? You want Kassian back? WTF! We already have enough big guys in this roster who can drop the gloves when prompted
        .

        • Rafi Bomb

Well for one, we definitely need some more physical players. Our current forward core only really has one big hitter in Neil and then two chippy forwards in Smith and Lazar. Depending on what kind of trade we make and which roster spots open up, it might be a good idea to add a physical energy guy to the 4th line via free agency or give a guy like Dziurzynski a solid look.

Aside from that, we need a heavyweight. The main reason why teams wouldn’t carry one at this point would be if there aren’t many others around the league. However, as we saw this offseason, Calgary loaded up on toughness and that forced a lot of teams to follow suit. It is important that the Sens sign somebody for the 13th/14th forward role that can be utilized in the games in which we need a heavyweight. With the Sens being so close to the cap floor, they have more then enough space to carry a heavy in an extra forward slot.

          • Shibal

Last time I checked – Teams like: Bruins, Kings, and Blackhawks don’t have heavy weight players on their fourth lines. They have players that can be physical and grind the oppositions.

Please! We don’t need another Neil on this roster – That’s suicide.

          • Terry

Neil will fight anyone, don’t eat up a spot for someone that plays 2min a game. Chiasson hits, Zibby hits, Stone hits, Michalek hits, McArthur hits, Smith hits. Detroit proves you don’t need a heavyweight.

          • Rafi Bomb

Detroit doesn’t prove shit. They are a shitty hockey team at this point. No one should be modelling their team after the current Red Wings,

Aside from that, the Red Wings have only been soft since Holland took over. This is the same organization that had the toughest fighter of all time in Bob Probert and also had Joey Kocur at the same time back in the 1990′s. These two were known as the Bruise Brothers. The Red Wings used to carry a fighter on every line and had elite power forwards like Keith Primeau and Brendan Shanahan. The Red Wings used to be an incredibly tough team.

          • CrazyFish

Things have changed since ‘the good ole days’.

          • Terry

So you think Ottawa should model a team that Brian Burke runs? Calgary loaded up on toughness? Who? Mason Raymond? Hiller?
Gone is the day of the “enforcer” unless they can play the game outside of just fighting.
And I don’t mind modelling a team after Detroit, who have consistently been playoff contenders for the past 20 years.

  • spezzerman

    I like it!

  • SensFanInMTL

Let’s make a run for Patrick Sharp! Not saying he’ll be our saviour but with the Legwand signing, it at least appears we won’t be taking a stab at McDavid.

    • Rafi Bomb

He could be a good pick up but I would prefer a player younger than 30. If we have to pay a premium, I would rather target Evander Kane or Brent Burns.

      • Stephane Cantin

        Please bring Burns

      • Harv

Kane or Hodgson but I don’t think you get either one. Not excited about trading our young guns for Sharp.

Why are we getting so excited about trades that will never happen?

        • Senator forever

Kane is a headcase and Hodgson is small with a wonky back. No thanks.

  • ProfessorPower

Legwand “Ottawa was my number one choice!!!”….(under breath) “between Ottawa and Edmonton”

    suck it Oilers!

    • Sensnation

I thought Toronto, Detroit and a few others were after him too. I heard he had a long list of suitors (8-10+).

      • Sandy

Detroit got him at the deadline last season, but didn’t re-sign him.

      • ProfessorPower

damn…that seems like a lot to end up with a 2 year 6 mil contract. Maybe he loves the city.

        • Sensnation

Sounds like he likes PM’s system and thinks he could thrive in it.

          • ProfessorPower

            its the mustache..couldn’t say no

          • Sensnation

            haha, very true :)

  • Sensnation

Any chance Legwand becomes our captain?

    • dasammy89

hell no. that would be a slap to the face to multiple players..lol

      • Sensnation

I could see Karlsson and Turris being hurt, but they are young. Beyond them Phillips maybe.

        • A-Train

Philips is for sure gonna be upset no matter who gets it. Hard to feel all that bad for him though.

    • Kohlmanator

If the C makes Karlsson happy, you give him the C.

      • Sensnation

If making Karlsson happy is our only goal going forward, we will die trying to prop him up on a pedestal.

    • A-Train

I was thinking about that. Goes against rumours of a youth movement in the leadership group, but does make a little bit of sense.

    • FistsofNeil25

Don’t think so. Murray said he wants to go young with this one. It’s gonna be Karlsson, Turris or no captain for a while I think.

  • Max2166

Welcome to Sens Army David Legwand. A good veteran presence for the Sens.

  • scorpio

Defently wana see condra gone and wouldnt mind haveing roy play in his home town

    • Rafi Bomb

We won’t be bringing in Roy at this point.

    • FistsofNeil25

      Roy is awful.

    • ill district

don’t mind condra playing 4 line minutes. provided he’s working his ass off. If he isn’t, get rid of him and give the spot to young talent.

    • HamadBo$$

I think Condra is a decent player its just that the walrus keeps playing him and giving him big minutes when he doesn’t deserve them.

  • sprucesens

ek now says our trade with SJ is off. good. hopefully this wasn’t want murray was talking about though.

    • I’m just sayin’

      ek = Erik Karlsson ?

      • Pat D

        eklund on hockeybuzz.com

  • dasammy89

Interesting: Ryan, Turris, Legwand, Methot, Michalek and Chiasson. @senators stocking up on Western big players.

    • A-Train

      what?

      • Pat D

They all played in the western conference……..

        • A-Train

Right. Since all are acquired via trade it probably has more to do with Murray’s desire not to trade within the conference.

  • Pat D

do we go after E.Kane or Sharp?

    • Pasky

Depends on the offers. For Sharp it’s Smith and Greening along with others, and we need to take another body because just Sharp still puts them over the cap. Kane would be better as he’s younger and fits in this rebuild, but he’s allegedly a hot head and may be more expensive. Turris was also allegedly a hot head though so I prefer Kane

    • A-Train

      We send Stone/Wiercioch/Dallas 2015 2nd for E.Kane.

      Macarthur – Turris – Ryan
      Kane – Zibanejad – Chiasson
      Michalek – Legwand – Lazar
      Greening – Smith – Neil

      • Pasky

Rather send 2 forwards if we can. Right now there’s Hoffman and Condra in the press box and Pageau in the minors in that scenario.

      • Kohlmanator

I have a feeling a 22 year old 1st line LW with 4 years left on his contract will cost a bit more than that.

        • Pasky

          Greening/Stone/Prince/2nd for Kane/3rd

        • A-Train

Yeah, it would. I hate to throw out BS proposals. Cowen in the deal?

          • Kohlmanator

Depending on Methot’s contract demands, yeah.

    • Jakester

I think it will be Sharp, he’ll look at the lineup now and see himself added and think Yep that could work pretty well.

    • I’m just sayin’

still need to sign Ragnar – any “budget” left after that ?

      • Pat D

        Who?

        • Kohlmanator

          Lehner’s nick name.

        • I’m just sayin’

Robin Lehner = our Ragnar Lothbrok

  • NewSensFan

What to expect from David Legwand.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pgyCZgmojc

    • my2sens

      Can’t forget the butt-end to Malkin’s nuts!!

    • MethotToMyMadness

So what you are really saying is, good thing we didn’t sign Dubnyk.

  • SuckitPhaneuf

If we trade Smith to Chicago for Bickell, we get a big LW
and they solve their cap issue and get back a decent centre.

    • Rafi Bomb

Bickell is over rated. If we acquire him then they should take back Greening.

      • Pasky

Yup, if we get Bickell they don’t get Smith. Rather Sharp anyways.

      • ill district

lol, you kidding me. this guy has been a monster in the post season back to back.

        • Pat D

gotta get to the playoffs first

  • sens88

I said this last year, and I’ll say it again, I think the Sens should consider Peter Mueller if the price is right

    http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Ty-Anderson/Peter-Mueller-on-Bs-radar/141/61136

  • MethotToMyMadness

This is the type of move I saw coming, way better than the VC rumors that were flying around the last 24 hours. Legwand will offer balance in the middle, with a lot of veteran experience. He has some scoring touch as well as minimal injury history. Legwand is someone our younger guys can look up too and learn from.

  • ProfessorPower

if that SJS rumor has any legs we should go after Brent Burns. He can bring the power forward presence if we need it, but can also solidify our D.

    Methot-Karlsson
    Cowen-Burns
    Philips-Ceci

    • Keregan

agreed Cowen and Burns on the same pairing would be really scary for any foward moving in our zone

      • ProfessorPower

Ya Cowen and Burns would be beastly together lol

      • jimmyjohnson

And any fan of the Ottawa Senators

  • Pasky

Hopefully we do 1 more trade for a guy like Sharp or Kane. I think once that would get done we can show Ryan that we do want to be competitive now, but set up for a cup run in 2-3 years and he signs his extension.

    • HamadBo$$

I don’t think the sens can land those guys and fit them under the internal cap.

      • Pat D

if they trade Smith and Greening they can. I wouldn’t trade Smith though

      • http://@CARLOSwSPECR1 CARLOSwSPECR1

If SENs can land one of those guys, I’m 100% sure Melynk will open up the purse strings, and we’ll see a rise in ticket sales.

        • zippy

          And Ryan will re-sign

        • HamadBo$$

if Melnyk didn’t open them for alfie, he aint opening them for sharp ;)

          • spezzerman

two seasons later, a lot has changed.

          • HamadBo$$

I wish I was as optimistic as you are…

          • Pasky

Any of these trades has at least 2 nhl contracts going back since we need to open room in our forward rank. Greening is probably one of them since we have been looking for a suitor, and we would need a LW anyways, so that’s 2.6M off the books right there. Add another player and your over 3M leaving. If Kane or Sharp comes back we’re only adding 2-3M in salary. We can do it and land close to the 56M that was reported.

        • Sandy

Maybe after the criticism he has received since Spezza left would make him consider it. Doesn’t need to be a lot. 3 or 4M more.

If he is still a billionaire, he should be able to provide that much.

  • Mitchell

Based our roster right now, I think we are pretty well set. for a nice developing year. if I see any trades i’d like to be departing of Chris Phillips, Craig Anderson, Jared Cowen, Coling Greening and Erik Condra if Chris Neil goes then Keep Erik Condra

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Ryan can play his off wing too

      • Mitchell

        thanks Tcharger forgot about that

  • NickofTime

I can’t believe that BM finally did something I wanted & that was to sign David Legwand. I certainly did not want to trade for Lecavalier when there was a better younger cheaper centre available who wouldn’t cost us any assets in Legwand. And at $3 mil per season that is cheap. Now the Sens have a legitimate experienced 2nd line centre who can fill in for Turris should he get hurt & add some much needed offence to this team to replace Spezza’s points.
Now I want BM to place Condra on buy out waivers.

    • Hax

Some people will never understand Condra.

      • HamadBo$$

I believe Condra is a decent player and we shouldn’t trade him but the Walrus shouldn’t play him as much as he played him last year…

        • Hax

That’s more about other players not playing well than about Condra. But I agree – there are several players that I like but also hope they play less this coming season. Simply because it should mean other guys are playing better.

      • WaitingSince92

        Right on.

I’ve learned that it doesn’t matter what you say, or how you explain it to people. Some fans just don’t know shit about hockey.

      • Sensnation

I truly believe(d) in Condra when our team was offensively top heavy, but defensively inconsistent. Now that our top end is pure 200 ft hockey, I question if Condra has a role on our team anymore. I’m not against it, but he and we may be better served by trading him … not buyout waivers though.

        • Jakester

          Great comment.

        • Hax

A buyout is beyond ridiculous of course. Some people just can’t see what Condra does but somehow still think he has value in a trade. He’s the exact type of player that teams don’t trade since their value on your own team is always higher than other teams’.

      • NickofTime

There are much better options in the organization, what else is there to understand. People keep wanting our best prospects to play well Condra is one guy where they can upgrade from within easily & quickly.

  • John Q. Spartan

    Ken Warren @Citizenkwarren 1m

Murray also says he continues to work towards a trade

    • A-Train

Does Murray know what this constant trade talk does to us?

      • Kielbasa

I’m sending Murray the bill to replace my keyboards’ F5 (refresh) button.

        • jimmyjohnson

We need that money for the budget, man.

  • NewSensFan

Does anyone see Curtis Lazar cracking the line up this year? Or is it too early to tell still?

    • HamadBo$$

I think he is definitely good enough but maybe they will let him play 9 games before sending him back

    • Andrews theory

i think alot of people see Lazar cracking the lineup this year including the 3 people that matter most; Murray, Dorion and MacLean.
it’s not as though we are loaded with veteran talent and he has nothing left to prove or learn in Junior

      • Keregan

With Legwand signing i’m pretty sure he is a lock for the 3rd line right wing spot

        • Pasky

Ryan-Chiasson-Stone-Neil-Condra on the right side, this is why a trade seems plausible to give him a chance.

    • spezzerman

yeah as andrews theory said, since his only other option to play next year is Junior, its a good bet mgmt would find the NHL better for development.

I’d even like to see him play in the NHL and then when World junior time comes, let him go and get that experience again, possibly even as team Captain, and let another prospect come up and take his place.

    • Sensnation

TSN 1200 just hinted that even as the 13th forward it wouldn’t be terrible as he would learn and progress a lot more than he could redoing junior again.

The hype train is definitely in full motion!

  • Pat D

Melnyk wants to make money… trade Anderson and sign Brodeur!!!

    • EK65

      Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh. No….

      *Tugs on collar*

    • sens88

      Worst idea ever

    • Kid Krayon

That’s a good idea…..Lehner will be the starter at some point why not trade Anderson and pic up a mentor for Lehner…..I’m with ya Pat D

  • Mitchell

is David Legwand #11? since alfie jersey isn’t retired..COULD IT BE!

    • spezzerman

nope, he will likely stick with 17. Second move in a row where Alfie has his #11…

    • NewSensFan

I think Legwand understands the circumstances and would not pick number 11 for his jersey number.

    • Hax

Legwand is a veteran – he’s not about to even ask for #11 since it would be a bush league move.

      • jimmyjohnson

He should ask for #6, seeing how it won’t be in use for too much longer

        • Sandy

          We don’t know that yet.

          • jimmyjohnson

if he goes into the month of November without a contract, #6 will be available for 15-16

  • Keregan

Our peskiness level just went up :)

  • spoons

how do the sens move forward with that defense tho. hopefully that is what the potential trade is, cause that D was terrible last year.

    • Spoons

      Troll. Get out of here

      • spoons

wow seriously? your real funny man

        • Spoons

Get your own handle! I do admit though that your previous posts aren’t trolling. We just both have the same name. It’s like 2 players wearing the same number on the same team.

          • spoons

haha ya never knew there was another spoons here. its a great name cuz who doesnt like spoons

          • Spoons

Got to love spoons, it’s the first cutlery you eat with as an infant, and the last cutlery you eat with as an old coot.

          • Pasky

Don’t disrespect the Spork though, pretty effective and I’ve seen one with a knife on one side of it… Is that called a Sporfe?

          • I’m just sayin’
          • Pasky

Thanks for making my day lol

          • knives

You guys need to fork off…you are so yesterday’s cutlery!

          • jimmyjohnson

            actually, you(!) are yesterday’s cutlery.

          • WaitingSince92

            I see you’ve played “knifey-spoony” before…

          • I’m just sayin’
        • MethotToMyMadness
  • NewSensFan

    MacArthur – Turris – Ryan
    Michalek – Zibanejad – Stone
    Hoffman – Legwand – Chiasson
    Greening – Smith – Neil / Condra

    Does this seem right?

    • Hax

I think there’s one more trade coming that will change that picture. And Lazar will force his way into the lineup as well IMO.

    • Andrews theory

I’d be shocked if Chiasson isn’t playing in our top 6. I think he has more upside than TSN has given him credit for and he adds some serious jam to that top 6 allowing stone to feast on 3rd line opposition.

      • ProfessorPower

I think we are going for a 3 line attack, basically trying to role three ’2nd line’ quality lines. If he is on the 2nd or 3rd it doesn’t really matter. He played LW in Dallas too. I see Michalek-Zibby-Stone Chiasson-Legwand-Lazar.

    • Pasky

Right now yea. If they really want to add Lazar on the main squad next year that’s where another trade happens but as of today this seems the most likely. Porbably why Murray said he’s satisfied with the roster, but would look into trading some pieces so that Lazar can stay with the big club.

    • jimmyjohnson

      Switch Chiasson and Stone

      • Sensnation

Agreed, and Lazar is sounding more and more like he will be in there as well. Hoffman, Condra and Greening will be fighting with Pageau and others for those last 2 roster spots right now, of which one is bench warmer.

    • peetypuck

It could be like this too.
      Ryan- – - – Turris – Chiasson
      MacArthur – Zibby – Stone
      Michalek – Legwand – Lazar
      Greening – Smith – Neil

  • FistsofNeil25

Legwand at 3M is such a steal and we only had to give him 2 years. Last year we got Clarkie at 2Y/6.5M. This year it’s Legwand at 2Y/6M. After seeing all these ridiculous contracts handed out this week, could this be the steal of the summer?

    • HamadBo$$

I wouldn’t call it a steal but its a good deal for both sides.

      • Keregan

        yup fair value no doubt

    • spezzerman

great, great deal no doubt. He will be motivated too. Not unrealistic to expect his usual 50 points which is rather excellent. And, he put up 50 in nashville as the top line guy every year. Be curious to see what he can do with some easier competition in a complimentary scoring role

    • ProfessorPower

he was making 3.5 last season and is 33. Good contract, I think it is what he is worth so I wouldn’t call it a steal unless he manages to out perform it like Macarthur has. Have to wait to see him play in a sens jersey.

  • SensChirp

Anybody heading to the KRC tonight to watch the scrimmage? Puck drop ay 6:45 PM.

    • Spoons

If anyone goes, try to shoot some video bits and host it on Youtube. Those who can’t attend would certainly appreciate it! :)

      • Pasky

I’ll second this. Wouldn’t mind watching but a 6 hour drive from Sudbury to Ottawa is impossible.

    • Spoons

      BTW, Lyndon Slewidge for Captain!

    • KJ

      Thinking about going

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Hmmmmm I may try to bring the young ones

    • Sandy

Really wanted to — but this inner ear issue of mine has me about ‘benched’.
      Whoever is going, updates please.

    • IcySurfas

      Hoping to get there!

If I make it, I will be the one chasing around a 4 yr old, while my wife eyes the ice candy.

      Its a cruel world …

    • sprucesens

I dunno, but at first glance you made me want a bucket of chicken!

  • John Q. Spartan

    Legwand captain?

    • Pasky

      Charlie Sheen Sober?

  • Kielbasa

I’m glad nobody woke Murray up too soon. He’s made strong and smart signings…yet again…despite my initial misgivings and worries on Tuesday.

  • AutoTurris

Excited about Legwand, so long as he stays healthy. On a line with Lazar it will be perfect development. Also excited that Puempel is close to being on that roster. And don’t count out Guptil either. Their plans for the 25th anniversary being the cup in Ottawa could be realised… Or maybe I’m speaking too soon. I just have that warm feeling inside… Or maybe it’s the alcohol…

    • HamadBo$$

      Definitely alcohol.

      • Voice Of Reason

        I second that!

    • MethotToMyMadness

      I need me some alcohol!

    • peetypuck

      2017 is my theory. Canada’s 150th birthday, the NHL’s 100th and the Sen’s 25th.

      • Michenator

How perfect would that be?! Although, I’m rooting for next year! A man can dream…

      • dasammy89

winter classic suppose to be here..i was actually gonna post this theory the other day lol maybe there planning for the cup in 2017? eugene will open up wallets around then to make a run? makes sense

  • Richard Gough

Today’s quote by Brian Murray The sea is angry today, my friends. Like an old man trying to send back soup at a deli”

    • Jakester

Costanza! Was it a Titleist? How about that a Hole in one!

  • Kielbasa

It’s also nice to suddenly feel a change in the mood in here and elsewhere when it comes to the Sens. We needed a little bone to chew on for a bit.

  • WaitingSince92

Any line with michalek and Legwand should be tops in the league. Elite!!! Let’s get Daigle to round out that line.

    • Pasky

You should read Kielbasa’s comment right below yours…… No negativity today lol

  • Andrews theory

Legwand isn’t the elite playmaker that spezza is but he does have some other attributes that will be a welcomed change over spezza.

he doesnt turn the puck over as often
he plays a full 200 foot game
he plays harder and doesnt circle away from the boards and back up the middle of the ice to change and avoid being hit every shift.

Great veteran presence to bring in and mentor some of the kids.

    • I’m just sayin’

Dl is a PM type of player – a veteran who plays hard in all zones

    • spezzerman

good on the power play too!

    • Kielbasa

Legwand isn’t Spezza. That’s not a bad thing at all. I really hope Sens fans and the Ottawa media aren’t going to pull out ridiculous comparisons. This was a very good signing for so many reasons.

  • Cunning

Shane prince will not be playing in todays scrimmage. Interesting…..

    • Cunning

      Because of a injury though

      • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

        I doubt it… Maybe “injury”

      • jimmyjohnson

That’s just what they want you to think

  • FistsofNeil25

I’m actually starting to get excited for this upcoming season. I’m not sure what to expect from this current roster but Murray seems to be changing the culture of this organization. I feel like new energy from guys like Legwand, Chiasson and Lazar is really going to rub off on the rest of the group.

Hopefully Murray can swing a deal to bring in another solid left winger or a top four defenseman. If he can fill one of those two holes then I really think this can be a playoff team in a wide open eastern conference.

    • spezzerman

without a doubt! I think last year served as a wake up call to a young group where everything had gone right for two seasons (from a win perspective, anyway). Our young d will be better with the experience gained from last year. Still so much to be excited about with this team, even if nothing else changes.

    • Senator forever

The pesky sens are coming back. Should make the playoffs and perhaps win a round in the playoffs but I don’t expect more. There are a lot of very good teams in the NHL these days.

  • Sandy

No doubt the Sens are weaker offensively without Spezza, but they are much better defensively with Legwand.

    • peetypuck

I’m hoping that Zib and Stone have break-out years next season.

  • Skeleton

When will the Evander Kane trade be announced? Hate to see Hoffman, Stone + go, but for a player like Kane, you have to do it.

    • ProfessorPower

lol if Kane is worth twice what Spezza got then you don’t do the deal. I would not trade Methot+Stone at all.

    • peetypuck

Maybe it’s ROR that Murray is trying to trade for.

  • FistsofNeil25

Did anyone see Bobby’s twitter chirp on Legwand?

    • Sensnation

Haha, that’s hilarious! I like to see Ryan’s personality come out like that.

    • Andrews theory

      post it..
what is this “twitter” is it similar that world wide internet phenomenon?

      • FistsofNeil25

It’s a picture of Bobby dangling Legwand for a highlight reel goal.

        • Sandy

Or about to nail him in the head.

    • Sandy

They said on TSN1200 today that Legwand, Ryan & MacArthur all have the same agency group.

      • FistsofNeil25

        Newport sports.

      • Jakester

        That is great news!

    • PaulMacLeansDuster

      Show’s a picture of him undressing Legwand…Genius.

    • Jakester

      It’s Ryan’s signature goal!

      • sprucesens

that’s my favorite goal for some time now. too bad it was still in the Anaheim jersey. it was playoffs to boot!

    • dasammy89

      ??

  • spgottawa

So basically BM has turned the $3m saved in the Spezza deal into David Legwand.
    Spezza out. Ludwig K out.
In are Chiasson, Legwand, Paul , Guptil, and a 2nd in 2015.
    Also re-signed 9MM.
Hemsky gone but let’s face it, he was a rental.
    Corvo, Kassian gone.
Lazar in? Young guys should be better… Hopefully D have a bit of a rebound. Same with Anderson and The Lehner.
Honestly can’t see how this team is worse than last year. People who think we are in the McDavid sweepstakes are too critical.

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Personally I honestly have no clue what to expect this upcoming season

    • ProfessorPower

every year should be about getting better. I don’t think anybody thinks we are worse than last year, just not better in terms of roster players..I think the character is back in tact. Pesky baby!

    • Senator forever

Great post. The sens will buy in to PM system this year and the pesky sens will be back. We still need a top 4 defencemen.

  • Sandy

3:30 PM: We have gotten our hands on a copy of tonight’s rosters for the development camp scrimmage. The teams will break down as follows…

    Team Black

    Forwards

Garrett Thompson – Ryan Dzingel – Mark Stone

Vincent Dunn – Quentin Shore – Tobias Lindberg

Ryan Van Stralen – Shane Eiserman – Alex Guptill

    Defence

    Fredrik Claesson – Cody Ceci

    Kevin Tansey – Kelly Summers

    Stefan Leblanc – Matt Murphy

    Goaltenders

    Marcus Hogberg

    Tomas Kral

    Team White

    Forwards

Matt Puempel – Curtis Lazar – Buddy Robinson

Nick Paul – Robert Baillargeon – Max McCormick

    Francis Perron – Darren Kramer

    Defence

    Mikael Wikstrand – Troy Rutkowski

    Ben Harpur – Andreas Englund

    Miles Gendron

    Goaltenders

    Chris Driedger

    Alex Vazzano

Please note: Sens prospect Shane Prince will not play due to injury.

    • PaulMacLeansDuster

      Prince is totally getting traded….

      • FistsofNeil25

Doesn’t make sense for him to risk getting injured in development camp. Anytime I here the name Prince in trade rumors though I can’t help but think of Stewart.

        • Sandy

          Don’t need him.

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Please note: Sens prospect Shane Prince will not play due to “injury”

      • spgottawa

And they actually used the “quotation marks” lol

        • Sensturion

Not sure what you’re reading but there are no quotation marks.

  • sbs138

Legwand plays an 83 game regular season because he is that awesome.

    • Pugnacious Serf

Exactly, that easily makes him the Chuck Norris of the NHL.

      • MisterUtterbag

I thought your name was pugnacious smurf

        Serf?

    • jimmyjohnson

We’re trading him at the deadline?
      That sucks.

  • silver seven

anyone have any idea if the scrimmage is online?

  • Brock

    MacArthur – Turris – Ryan
    Michalek – Zibanejad – Chiasson
    Hoffman/Trade – Legwand – Lazar/Stone
    Greening/Hoffman – Smith – Neil

To be honest, I love it. If Murray makes a trade for a left wing and Hoffman moves down to the fourth line, I have no problem seeing this team challenging for a playoff spot. Even if he doesn’t and Greening stays on the fourth line, I still see this team being a good one. The only question mark is the defence. Cowen needs to be better. Wiercioch (if not traded) and Ceci need to get stronger. I think Methot will still be a solid defenseman for us and Karlsson… well he’s Karlsson. Go Sens Go. Shock the world.

  • Sensnation

If Zibanejad really is our 1st line C, as Murray states (thinks?):

    Michalek-Zibanejad-Ryan
    MacArthur-Turris-Stone
    Lazar-Legwand-Chiasson
    Greening-Smith-Neil
    Hoffman

    Methot-Karlsson
    Cowen-Gryba/Wiercioch
    Phillips-Ceci

    Lehner/Anderson

Stone and Chiasson are interchangeable, but Stone had some chemistry there.

    • Spoons

For some reason, I think MacClean will do something stupid and put Legwand as our 1st center.

      • sprucesens

just so long as the first 3 lines are the one’s getting the ice time, I don’t care who get’s labelled which line. Best player’s play, hopefully this time around

      • bluebuyyoo

Yeah. Stupid coach making decisions that affect the team.

      • Max2166

The Stache will not do that. Kyle Turris is the number 1 center.

    • spgottawa

Yes. This actually looks pretty competitive.
Condra and Boro need spots or to be dealt. With two extra forwards and an extra D I definitely think there is another deal to be done. A package for a top six forward would make the top 3 lines quite good. A package for a top 4 D would also work.

  • iKarly65

That’s neat – he’ll get to play his 1000th game in an Ottawa jersey.

  • boom

If anyone makes it out to the scrimmage, try to keep an eye on Ryan Dzingel, I seem to remember the Sens being real high on him. Of course, having said that, he’ll stink up the joint…

  • Spoons

No matter how you juggle the first 3 lines, the lineup doesn’t look too bad! As long as Greening and Condra are out, Stone and Lazar are in it looks good! No potent line, just 3 hard working lines. If W46 has a breakout (which I expect) we should be pleasently surprised.

    • dasammy89

we might fuckin trade him..i dont get it. GET RID OF PHILLIPS before you get rid of W46. Get rid of neil while your at it. cant just get rid of everyone except them lol

      • ProfessorPower

we have Ceci and Karlsson. Wiercioch needs to add muscle, was too weak in the corners..and thats why he was benched.

I agree, would rather trade Philips. But would trade Wiercioch over any other D except Gryba. He has value and is expendable, thats why I think he will be traded. Not because he is a bad player.

      • Spoons

W46 will be a solid top 4. It’d be stupid to trade him, I agree

    • jtf927

our centre position is now awesome. turris-legwand-zbad/lazar-smith. really rally awesome. so happy to read this today.

  • jtf927

awesome! awesome signing by murray. a player who puts up some pretty good numbers. proven offensive ability and the most important thing of all, defensively responsible too. man, i am so happy with this signing. way to go murray! GO SENS GO!

    • Rafi Bomb

      Younger player?

      • jtf927

nm. i just realized he’s 34. :) thanks for correcting.

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Was there a second signing I missed?

  • NewSensFan

I would like to see Cowen and Phillips go and have this, but :’(
    EK65 – Meth
    W46 – Grybs
    Ceci – Boro74

    • jtf927

i am still hoping murray signs a veteran dman. pickings are getting thin though.

      • laffin681021

Hoping he signs a veteran Dman?when we already have one in Phillips and we already have 8 D. No chance it happens

        • jtf927

we have too many d going into next season. if it happens, most likely via trade.

          • laffin681021

Technically not. Ceci can start in the AHL which I really think will happen so we’re down to 7 D. Unless we get a quality winger and ship out a D Ceci would strt with us then. Regardless Murray isn’t going to sign a D from free agency.

          • jtf927

ceci is the most likely a loack to start the season with the sens. if a couple of dmen are sent down, i doub it will be him. i think murray is maybe waiting to see how our dcorp looks during training camp and at the start of the season before he makes a decision. i agree with going via a trade option. we have enough pieces to make a trade.

          • laffin681021

Ceci is the only one we’re able to send down. Everyone else has 1 way contracts and he’s definitely not a lock to start with the team. Unless you can show me that management says he’s almost a lock then it’s all speculation. If things stay the way they are now I doubt Ceci starts with the big club unless he is dominating in training camp. Doubt they want to carry 8 D again next year.

    • Pasky

      Gryba isn’t a Top 4 D though

      • Brutus5247

Brooks Orpik plays the same game. Is he a 5/6?

    • Max2166

The Big Rig probrably has an NMC in his contract. Unfortunately it will not happen.

    • Captain Karl

Why are you so upset with our goalies

  • Max2166

It will be interesting to see Evegni Malkin’s reaction the first time he plays David Legwand in the Sens uniform. David butt ended him in a Detroit – Pens game on March 14, 2014. It will be interesting to see.

    • laffin681021

He probably doesn’t even remember anymore

      • Max2166

Hopefully. Maybe Legwand will find something else to do to Gino get him pissed off.

  • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

    Chirp where is the scrimmage?

    • CohMa

Kanata Recreation Complex. On Walter Baker rd.

  • Cicero

Great signing — looking at some of the line-ups posted here already, I really like the shape, the gestalt, of the 2014-15 Sens. I know we haven’t picked up a top3 FWD (yet), but the ship was sinking defensively and it looks well plugged now.

    • Deadly

After watching the up tempo playoffs lead by the younger playoffs, not everyone were panicking .

  • MisterUtterbag

Nice to see lots of positive vibe today

  • MisterUtterbag

I am starting to think Condra is expendable. Every line has to score. And he just doesn’t score enough

    • karlssens

Guy can’t even finish in a whore house

      • Keregan

        lol gross

    • Wyzerd

Such an abuse of the word “think” At least with karlssens there’s no pretense of synapses firing…

      • MisterUtterbag

        Ouch!

        I felt that.

      And Neil does?

      • MisterUtterbag

Well greening-smith-Neil are a line and they generate energy and score a bit. Condra is known mostly for D

        • SensChirp

Greening-Smith-Neil get dominated regularly. Only chance that line has is in a fourth line role, 6-8 minutes a night. An energy line, like you said.

          • Jakester

            Sluggish line. Skating issues.

          • KJ

Smith can still get us 15 goals and maybe more. Greening, not so much. Neil is regressing, but he is needed for what he does bring which is toughness. He gets the odd goal now and again. But, he cares! So, with the new “work hard” type team, he still fits IMO

          • HamadBo$$

yet they get like 15 for some reason

        • Aaron 2.0

They maybe are all capable of that individually (bringing energy). Together they are a defensive disaster that constantly gets owned.

          • MisterUtterbag

            Point taken

    • Jakester

      Not even in the bars!

    • Doc

      Yawn.

      • MisterUtterbag

        Attitude? Not from you Doc.

        Say it isn’t so

        • Doc

          You have that effect.

          • MisterUtterbag

I had a couple of beers already.

            Not my wittiest day

          • Doc

Yeah can’t wait for that too. I’m on call and I got called for work.

            On a Friday night.

          • MisterUtterbag

At least legwand will make it bearable

          • KJ

That sucks for you! :) but honestly, I know how that is, since I am on call 365:24:7. When it happens it happens. Sigh. Have a scotch when you fix it!

  • thepez

Chirp I have an idea for you. Keep a list of all of us Cowen fans who think he will rebound and become the d-man we believe that he will be (Top 4) and keep a list of all those who want him gone. At the end of the year those who were wrong have to come on here and admit to being wrong, a sort of confessional with Chirp. What do you think?

    • Pugnacious Serf

How about those that are wrong get stoned?

      • thepez

Admitting to it is enough. There has been a lot of negativity towards a 22 year old d-man who has the talent to be very very good and people want to get rid of him. Very short sighted in my opinion

        • Pugnacious Serf

There are a lot of people that are short sighted for sure. Some put a little too much emphasis on “pretty” hockey versus playoff hockey. Cowen, Greening and Gryba are big guys and will all have turn around seasons, how can they not?

          • thepez

The same was said about Redden, Philips and people were doubting EK65 when he was sent down to the minors in his rookie year. D-men take time.

      • I’m just sayin’

or have to live in Tookie’s or Jake’s house for a month ?

        • Jakester

Well , I was one who wanted Spezza gone and told you all last year that he was going to be traded! Took all sort of shit yesterday for wanting the Sens to sign Legwand.and am telling y’all lol that Smith will be traded and that Cowen will continue to suck balls in Ottawa or potentially where we ship him in the next few days. Oh and Condra….nah why waste my breath on him.

          • Aaron 2.0

Smith. Love what he brings. But, that’s also part of the reason why I think could be an important piece in a trade for the right player coming back. Right now, w/ him here, depth looks pretty good at C.

Cowen – Who knows. Hope he turns it around. He had a disaster of a year. But, coaching did him no favours, IMO. Response to his struggles were apparently to put him in our top pairing. Baffling…

Condra – People either love him or hate him. Personally, I have a hard time thinking of a better 4th liner (assuming he’s used that way). Puck possession wizard that’s always on the right side of goals for vs. goals against. And, arguably our best penalty killer. As as fourth liner, there is a lot of utility there (and for dirt cheap).

          • WaitingSince92

No one listens on Condra – I’ve been trying for a while now – but you summed it all up really well. He’s a spot on your fourth line and PK that earns dick all, but you don’t have to worry about upgrading. He could be a 4th liner on any team, contenders included, but most people just remember missing open nets.

      • SENSsmile

Stoned… in what sense? Actively getting stoned with drugs or having stones thrown at them? :-)

    • sell the team Eugene

I always laugh when someone suggests that SOMEONE ELSE do a bunch of work

      • thepez

Hey man, figured Chirp has the ability to do it. I would be happy to call out the people who are wrong. Plus this was supposed to be a fun thing.

        • John Q. Spartan

and if he doesn’t we can all point and laugh?

  • karlssens

I know one thing for sure.. In my opinion we are 1 top 6 forward OR one top 4 D away from being a bonifide playoff team. Make it happen Murray!

    • MisterUtterbag

      Why either or?

      • karlssens

        Money $$$

  • KJ
    • KJ

      Sens rookies are big

    • Magnus Nor

      Who don´t love big D´s!

      • KJ

We are going to like Guptil! What a shot. Harpur is huge. Lazar is great defensively- Picked Ceci’s pocket on a back check. Team black up 3 – 0 at intermission

        • Magnus Nor

So how far are Harpur from NHL? Any info on that?

          • KJ

Season or two I think. Not winning a spot this year, but then you never know.

      • dasammy89

        Pause

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Well I don’t hate the signing but I don’t love it either.

Still one top 4 D away from the team being a playoff contender this season.

    • Magnus Nor

Or some D step up the next season!

      • jasonontheoldsenschirp

        True, but risky.

One things for sure though, Legwand is a veteran player and that’s something we definitely needed.

        • Magnus Nor

I am very excited to see what Lazar could do in NHL as a rookie and im excited to see Chiasson, Ceci and the other guys if they can mature even more this season!

          • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Everybody keeps penciling in Lazar as an NHL regular, which I think is ridiculously premature. Chances are he isn’t NHL ready. There’s no need to rush a player to the NHL just because.

          • Magnus Nor

I think he will be given a shot to try and have the chance to make it if he really wants and if things fall into place, why not?!

          • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Oh he’ll be given every shot just like everybody else, I just find it funny that people have him in their starting rosters. Like let the guy at least play one preseason game before we start to speculate.

Looking purely at the prospect depth chart though, it goes something like 1. Stone 2. Prince 3. Puempel. But may the best man win

          • Magnus Nor

Every is hyped on him! Everyone loves his character and what he brings to the game, it might be more wishful thinking than being realistic but I really hope he will make it, sure will get everyone hyped i think to see him in the SENS Jersey.

          • Harv

Bottom line is, what is he going to learn in another year of junior? I think, unless he shows real bad, he stays with the Sens. If Bingo were an option, that would work but Bingo is a no-go.

          • WaitingSince92

Would you really be surprised if he made the team out of camp, though? It’s premature to assume, but you have to admit there are lots of ‘hints’ that suggest he could do it (attitude, skill, available spots).

Gotta say when I hear him speak, sounds like he’s gonna force them to keep him with the big club.

  • Phoenix

Love the signing and happy to hear that a player wants to come to Ottawa because of the coach and the system. It will be scoring by committee and that’s never a bad thing. Now hopefully what ever this deal Murray is referring too pans out and bolsters the team even further.

  • Max2166

Any idea what number David Legwand will have with the Sens? Bryan Murray is talking about a trade. When will it happen?

    • MisterUtterbag

I’ll give him a call and ask. He’s on speed dial

      • MisterUtterbag

        Kidding

  • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Wow Paul has one hell of a shot

  • Magnus Nor
  • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

    Guptill with a beauty

  • Spoons

Wow, Legwand sounds genuinely happy and excited to be a Sen! I think we’ll have a core of players that WANT to be here. Michalek, MacArthur and now Legwand. Obviously our youngins’ too. I’m just worried about Ryan and Karlsson (and maybe Methot too).

    • Deadly

With an avatar like that,I think you have more to worry about than 3 fringe players….jjjust kidding. Don’t worry,be happy.
Like the way things are developing.

  • Spoons

Bahaha… Here’s the video Rayn is refering to in his latest tweet.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hwLhWZmRWk

  • FistsofNeil25

At dev camp scrimmage. Dzingel has been has been really really good for team black.

    • jimmyjohnson

      ty
      lazar?
      englund?

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

He was really good, Lazar looked good as well.

Paul didn’t really look into it… Guess could be due to not really knowing the system

      • FistsofNeil25

Yeah I’m more impressed with Guptill than Paul.

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Yeah he’s looked good. His goal was a great shot, happened right in front of me.

          • KJ

Maybe it’s because I was sitting in the team black end but team white players I noticed were 13, and 27: Paul and lazar. Lazar was everywhere but Paul was not getting back when possession was lost. Lazar is going to be a great player for us! It was difficult for me to notice team white D except for Harpur. He is huge and was in on a few rushes.

Classon will be good steady D. He was paired with Ceci.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Some of those guys were massive, I mean I am 6’2″ 220 lbs, and some of them looked significantly larger.

          • KJ

You just reminded me- I saw a lot of 55 tonight as well. Robinson. Yes. They are massive. Murray is building team BIG! :)

        • FlapJackKing

Funny because I thought Paul looked better than Guptill. The puck really seemed to follow Paul around and he can really move for a big guy…a good hockey IQ. He just needs more polish in order create space for himself…absolutely a cannon of a shot.

I though Guptill floated a lot. Quick when heading into the offensive end but then he let up on the quick transitions. The skill is there but the effort could have been better in my opinion. You can just tell he loves to move into the tight spots though.

  • Millennium

    RW depth … check
Ryan, Chiasson, Stone, Lazar, Condra, Neil

    C depth … check
    Turris, Zibanejad, Legwand, Smith, Pageau

    LW depth … Needs work
    MacArthur, Michalek, Hoffman, Greening,…..Prince/Puempel/Guptill

If we could move Greening is some package deal that sends back a solid 2/3 LW, and use Neil as 13th forward, we’d have a pretty damn balanced attack.

    • jimmyjohnson

Neil is forward #13 in our hearts, but forward #1 in Maclean’s mind.
Every lineup should just embrace that fact. Neil is in the top 12, unfortunately.

      • Kumar

It is the saddest part. McLean should lower ice time for Neil and Greening

        • Sandy

The idea with Neil is that he would go to the net. Not too many forwards on the team did that last season
I expect a lot more do that this year.

          • zippy

            Legwand anyone?

  • FistsofNeil25

Spotted: Shane Prince watching the scrimmage from the bleachers.

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Is he in with management or just around?

      • FistsofNeil25

He was sitting on the bench side of the rink as far away from management as possible lol

    • dasammy89

      go ask him whats up

      • KJ

        Injured. That’s all

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Did anyone ever figure out one way or another if that guy from the other day was legitimate?

          • KJ

Don’t know. But the line up card tonight at senators.nhl.com was showing Prince as injured. Not reading anything into it beyond that at the moment.

  • jimmyjohnson

    how does englund look?

    • KJ

Truthfully, I didn’t notice him much, but I am erring on the fact that he was on team white And I was in the wrong end to see his D play closely. I noticed Harpur a lot and Kwitkowski (sp?). He got team white’s only tally. Harper is a monster at 6’6″ tall so hard not to miss.

  • KJ

Pretty sure fans are going to like our two new prospects.

  • jimmyjohnson

You know what, forget Englund…How does Wikstrand look? Does he look like he could play yet?

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

He looked out of place when I noticed him.

Kinda getting in the way. You can see the skill is there though

  • WaitingSince92

Kinda neat about Legwand’s GP last year because of the trade. Based on that, I’m assuming he will be able to give “110%”

  • Kumar

Folks, are we done with our free agent signing ?
I saw in Ottawa Sun that Bryan is open to trade Greening and Condra PLUS Wiercioch

    • Millennium

Well we are done with signings, since we have a full roster, but we’re still trying to make a trade apparently. Hopefully for a LW or Top 4 D.

      • Kumar

I believe Bryan and Eugene wants to put a team that will win games for fans traffic. We know it will be a tough ask for the team to compete for a play-off spots. I wish we win and make the play-offs or be a team able to pick within top 5. Stuck in the middle is not good for the teams future. Either make play-offs or pick within top 5.

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Next year truthfully all first round picks are likely to succeed… The draft is unreal

    • Sandy

Is that a Garrioch article? Somehow I don’t think Murray tells him what players he is trading

  • Dirtysweetness

I was talking to a buddy tonight and he mentioned that Gretzky was looking at partnering in a franchise in Seattle. If only we could get his attention and invest in Ottawa. Talk about bringing back credibility and excitement to the Senators’ organization.

    • A-Train

Gretzky is a bit of a disaster on the personal front. All kinds of prior issues and zero success off the ice.

Also: He likes California, so running a franchise anywhere in EST isn’t really going to work.

      • T K

Valid on both counts. He did own the Hull Olympiques for a while but that was a financial investment and he got out as soon as he could.

  • karlssens

Can anyone give a review on some of the top prospects they saw tonight? Who stood out well, and who stood out poorly. Would be greatly appreciated by us all!

  • A-Train

Hm. As Chirp points out the team must be close to or at the internal budget.

But Murray wants to make a move.

Sending just prospects out won’t clear enough salary if it’s an impact player coming back.

So who could be on the way out in a deal? Greening maybe, but he won’t fetch anything even packaged with prospects.

    So. Methot, Cowen….Anderson?

    (Ryan is signing here)

    • Millennium

Biggest deadweight contracts: Greening, Phillips, Cowen (as of right now) = $8M approx.

Most movable contracts (that they would even consider moving): Wiercioch, Smith, Condra, Anderson.= $8M approx.

      • jimmyjohnson

With competent replacements already in line for Anderson, Phillips, Greening, and Condra, I believe strongly that we’d be a better team if all of them were moved elsewhere.
And I KNOW I’m not alone on that one lol

    • jimmyjohnson

      “Ryan is signing here”
      ?
Am I missing something? Why so confident?

      • KJ

Don’t know if you saw Ryan’s tweet or not, but he was one Sen (maybe first one) welcoming him to the team! You don’t do that if you don’t expect to be here.

        • jimmyjohnson

Lol KJ. That’s one massive assumption.
Maybe he just saw a chance to crack wise about undressing the guy and took it.
Until he puts his sig on a ‘tract, I won’t believe he isn’t Vanek-bound early next season. (And really, we should all be praying they trade him early, if he hasn’t signed by the end of October; otherwise, we very likely lose him for nothing or minimal at the deadline).

          • KJ

LOL. This is funny. Like there aren’t any assumptions running wild all over this site. I agree with you Jimmy but I have a good feeling about Ryan. I think all our “UFA’s to be” get signed. New vibe post Spezza era.

An article by Lowetide on puckrant, good Oiler blogger with his own site.

    http://www.puckrant.com/slapshot/DAVID_LEGWAND/3697

  • jtf927

talk about a scoring touch. this guy sizzles. ;)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OajUip0BFcU

    • ProfessorPower

omg the guy has scored more than 20 goals twice in his 15 year career.

  • Jakester
    • jtf927

nice. this guy is really good at both ends of the ice. i have noticed that alot of his goals are a result of forechecking and outbattling his opponents. great player to have on our team.

  • karlssens

David Legwand is a very similar player that Lazar is projected to be. I love how he is here for two years to warm Lazar’s spot and provide some guidance.

Now, if we can trade for Tyler Myers, or another top 6 forward, I’ll be officially pumped with the upcoming season :).

Also, resign MacArthur, Ryan, and Methot for the love of God.

    Any predictions on their contracts?
    YearsXmoney
    Ryan: 7×7
    MacArthur: 4×4.5
    Methot: 5×4

    • Sandy

      About right for Ryan
      MacA about 4×5
      Methot 3×5

      • KJ

        They will resign for sure

        • jtf927

with the haul we got back in the spezza trade and now signing legwand, i think murray is doing a good job showing that the organization is committed to a smart and effective re-build, in order to build a winning franchise.

          • KJ

Absolutely! Now that I have seen with my own eyes what we got back, I am excited! Guptil has NHL shot and hands. Paul could be power forward in two years. He also has some soft hands.

          • jtf927

right on. with legwand and chiasson, we have a much more harder team. drive to the net. i am hoping 9mm has a bounce back season and re-gains his form. happy he re-signed.

          • KJ

It doesn’t mean anything, but Guptil and Paul both scored in their fun shootout attempt after the scrimmage. Guptil is slick! Just sayin… :)

          • jtf927

it’s good to know. good to know we have some potential talent in the pipes.

    • zippy

      For the love of God!!

      • karlssens

        ? What

        • zippy

“Also resign MAcArthur, Ryan and Methot for the love of God!!”

You’re too easy to make fun of dude.

          • karlssens

Any guy that makes fun of another person on the internet clearly gets/got bullied themselves in real life.. I’m sorry you get locked in lockers and pushed around in gym class… No need to take it out on a blog!

          • zippy

I was just in a good mood yesterday after the signing and having fun. Everyone else was too (I thought)

Yes you’re right I was “that” guy. Not sure it’s relevant here though.

Apologies. I’ll back off. Didn’t mean to piss you off.

    • Nikola Todorić

macurthur @ 5 million EASILY. if he has another 60pt campaign… maybe even a 5.5 million dollar guy. If Michalek is 4 million then Mac is definitely 5.

    • jtf927

bang on. we need to re-sign those three, especially ryan and mcarthur.

    • FistsofNeil25

      That’s too much for Ryan.

      • sens88

It’s true. It would be good to get him somewhere between 6-6.5 mil for 5 years. 7 years seems a bit long

  • Tooks

So when I said Legwand would be a decent plug for a year or 2, it was blasphemy…now the Sens actually do it and its a great move, lol. You guys crack me up :)

    • Spinorama

Go back into your trailer tooks….u never said that

    • KJ

      Whatever…

    • sens88

No idea what you’re even talking about.

    • Jason Spezza

      POLKAROO

  • ProfessorPower

Mark Stone was the best player on the ice tonight

    • KJ

Expected. It was more interesting to me too see who else has it. Dzingle was impressive, and so was Lazar. Dunn had some great shifts too.

    • FistsofNeil25

Yeah Stone and Dzingel were great for team black as were Ceci and Claesson. I really liked Claesson. Lazar was the only stand out for me on team white. I was hoping to see more from Puempel.

      • ProfessorPower

I thought the same about Pumps as well. Lazar played very good, Stone Ceci Dzingel Claesson and Dunn played great for team black.

      • FlapJackKing

I really liked Paul for team white. He was hard on the puck and has a good motor. The puck seemed to follow him around a lot. If he can polish up his game (improve skating, puck control) he has a chance.

    • spgottawa

Stone is considerably more experienced than most of the group. He was expected to be one of the top players at this camp. Nonetheless it is encouraging that he is doing as expected – bodes well for him for this season….

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Ryan Dzingel is the most ‘underrated’ prospect in the system. He was a Hobey Baker Award nominee and killed it in college. How did they find this guy in the seventh round

    • MisterUtterbag

BMs scouts rock… Pure and simple

    • things that make me go hmmmmmm

108 points in 110 games at Ohio State
7 points in 9 games at Binghamton

      HMMMMMMMMM

    • Spoons

I don’t want to bust anyone’s bubble, but in the past 20 years, the Hobey Baker award was given to 5 noticeable NHLers, including Matt Gilroy. lol. Lets not get overly hyped on Dzingel.

      • EK65

Yeah, but on the other side of the coin, Ryan Miller, Brendan Morrisson, and Paul Kariya all won it.. You are right about the majority of the players fizzling out though

        • jimmyjohnson

Johnny Gaudreau is going to be a Kariya level player. Just watch. As everyone agrees, the kid is sick.

      • HamadBo$$

yup and Capurosso (spelling?) was also a nominee but look what happened to him… he couldn’t even make the AHL

  • Captain Karl

A lot of people are worried about defence (for good reason) but I’m expecting a bounce back year now that all the forward lines will be playing the same system. Our team was disjointed last year with Spezza’s line playing run and gun and the rest of the team getting caught up in that style. I suspect it will be much easier for Mac to have the team buy into his system this year.

    • ProfessorPower

we should trade for Brent Burns. If the Sharks are willing to make a splash he could be available. Burns would add to the ‘Pesky’ identity. We can use him on the second pairing, or if the D we have perform fine we can move him up on Zibbys wing to bring that Power Forward presence. He can play both wings and both D positions.

      Macarthur-Turris-Ryan
      Burns-Zibanejad-Stone
      Michalek-Legwand-Lazar
      Chiasson-Smith-Neil
      Greening

->with Burns on Defense move Milo and Chiasson up and insert Greening.

      Methot-Karlsson
      Cowen-Burns
      Philips-Ceci
      Boro, Gryba

->with Burns on Offense move Ceci up and insert Boro or Gryba

      • jimmyjohnson

Lazar will not push Chiasson (assuming he isn’t traded before the season starts) out of his spot on the RW.

      • Pasky

Chiasson is a Top 9 or Top 6, and the centerpiece of the Spezza trade. No way he plays the 4th line on his off wing that he doesn’t play anyways.

        • ProfessorPower

Lazar and Stone are better prospects. Roll 4 lines. And yes he can play LW if you have ever watched him play.

If the trade happened we would most likely use Burns as a D man, moving Chiasson to top 9. The option is still available however.

    • FistsofNeil25

Part of their defensive struggles were due to Maclean’s system. He even said at the end of the season presser that he needs to bring a new defensive system in for next year that will make it easier for his players to defend.

We should be a better defensive hockey team next year even if we have the same personnel on the back end.

      • zippy

Funny I only remember MacLean saying he was too hard on them. And planned to lighten up this year

        • Sandy

He’s going to have to lighten up. Go back to the way he was. A lot more young players will be on the team.
He has to go back to the instructing and approachable side than he was last season.
Does anyone know of the health status of Mark Reeds. He’s usually at camp. We can all guess he’s fighting cancer by watching him at the end of last season. I hope he has a full recovery.

    • Conor_smythe

Lol.. Spezza was run and gun?? he could barely even skate for half the season (recovering from back surgery)

the only player that was Run and gun was your boyfriend Karlsson, and it cost us dearly, as he barely ever made it past our own blueline

Our defence improves this year if Karlsson plays less selfish AKA, uses his defensive partner Properly to create space, instead of trying to rush the puck or long bomb pass every time

      • SensChirp

Run and gun meaning a focus on offence and cheating away from defensive responsibilities. So ya, Spezza did do that often.

The defence improves if the other 5 defenceman step up their game. Karlsson was their best defenceman last year and it wasn’t close. But yea, he’ll admit he can be better.

        • zippy

I thought Ceci played well all things considered.

Phillips, Cowen .. both were eaten alive. Especially Cowen.

Gryba was ok. I don’t recall Methot.

I’m sure noone wanted to play with Cowen. He sucked sooooo bad.

          • Michenator

Cowen by the end of the season was getting better though… He was still recuperating from his injury. Hopefully he’s had a really good off season and can find his old form, otherwise I am afraid he’ll never get back to what he could be.

          • zippy

Cowen will get better for sure. And he’ll get the full benefit of training camp.

I also think the whole team has time to adjust from losing Spezza. And the whole team will be on the same page. Which IMO makes a huge difference

          • Pasky

At the end of year Cowen said that his other hip was banged up for a while so he was only skating with the one hip that was in the middle of rehabing. He’s going to have a solid season I’m betting on unless there’s another injury.

          • zippy

Why did he continue playing? Isn’t that what IR is for?

        • Conor_smythe

its funny, your definition of run and gun is exactly the way I would describe Karlssons play.. he was our best dman.. but thats like saying he was the smartest guy with down syndrome.. He didnt play a defensive game until after the olympics. he was pure run and gun before that.. and he made tons of mistakes.. more than spezza I would argue.. I would love to sit down with you one day chirp, and go over videos from this past season… I don’t know what you’ve been seeing, but we spent Hours inside our own blueline, with karlsson just trying to dump the puck up the boards, and nobody there except the other teams player, ready to shoot the puck right back in. OR trying skate through3 players and getting stripped of the puck- when all the while, he could have just made a simple play and passed it to his D-partner

it was a poor effort on his part.. and if it wasn’t for Spezza, EK65 would not have had nearly as many points, and you guys wouldn’t all be here saying how great he was last season

Or is that something you guys didnt think about.. Karlsson minus Spezza = way less points.. he’s probably a 50 pt/season guy without Jason feeding him Gimmies and finishing impossible plays for him

          • zippy

Dude. Have a little respect. My daughter has Down Syndrome.

Spezza feeding Karlsson gimmies, holy shit have you ever watched a single sens game?

I’m sure Chirp would love to sit down with you too there Conor… I’m surprised Chirp doesn’t ask you to go to games with him so you can point out how much Karlsson sucks.

        • Sandy

He was still hampered by a numb foot last year and his pivoting was affected.
Let’s hope he’s back to 100% come next season.

      • jimmyjohnson

The defense improves if he plays better…yeah that’s pretty obvious to everyone. Thanks for the insight.

what were they to gaurd against…?

    • Spoons

Bettman. Betman was the Super villain mastermind

    • jimmyjohnson

On the NHL site, the poll is which team improved the most this offseason and of course Ottawa isn’t on the list.
I think we might actually be the most improved team, not only by addition and (assumed) growth of our youth, but also subtraction and cohesion (more players playing the same game).
It may not look like it yet, but if we can get some better stuff out of the youth, I wouldn’t be surprised if we were better than either wild card spot next year. The whole division is pretty even I think (except Buffalo).

  • jimmyjohnson

Did anyone get a look at Francis Perron yesterday? He wouldn’t likely stand out (in fact, he’d probably be the least NHL ready player there) but I’m interested in whether he has more upside than his draft status.

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I noticed the name a couple times, sort of in an ohhh who just pulled that off sort of way.

      • jimmyjohnson

oooohh. neat. I’ll be interested to see what he does next season.

  • Spoons

To answer Chirps latest tweet: Who stood out at dev camp?

Prince. He literally stood out of dev camp. That’s my final answer.

  • Sensturion

The cooking video of the dev camp was pretty entertaining. They look like they have no idea what they’re doing haha

  • Andrews theory

Very excited to see what Stone can do this year if he stays healthy. Even after the Juniors there were a ton of posters on here saying he’d never be a decent NHL player due to his skating. Something about you can’t improve your skating that much to make up the difference. Guess what… Ya you can..kid has done everything the org has asked and he’s probably the forward I’d be most disappointed about trading if he were part of a package,

Our success next in reality will rely on one of two players if we don’t add to our D core.

    1) Cowen rebounds and has a monster year
    2) Wiercioch actually gets a shot to play top

    What I’d like to see;

    Karlsson Wiercioch
    Cowen Methot
    Ceci Gryba
    Phillips

    Have a great Saturday everyone

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

That was one thing that really did stand out to me….Stones skating, it is seriously night and day to when we drafted him.

By no means do I expect him to be the best player of that draft year, but he just may end up being the steal of the draft.

      • Andrews theory

Ya I’d say that’s a very good possibility

At this stage I see him projecting as a 25 goal, 50 point player- not bad at all

    • Hax

You’ve got two lefties and two righties in your bottom two pairs. MacLean likes LR pairs.

      • Andrews theory

Hmmm maybe Murray can make a hockey trade for a leftie or two

        • Hax

Uh, we already have five. Karlsson, Ceci and Gryba are the only NHL righties.

    • Andrews theory

      Ok far less sexy

      Wiercioch Karlsson
      Methot Gryba
      Cowen Ceci
      Phillips

Just don’t see Gryba as a top 4

          and PW and JC

  • AutoTurris

So I know BM has been working on trades and this whole Prince business is sketchy, but let’s say – for the sake of argument – that the trade falls through. Would everyone be alright with not bringing up Lazar and running a Stone / Legwand / Greening third line, as well as with sending Ceci back to juniors?

Thought about it… And if we can’t get a deal done, I’m alright with it. Also I don’t want to lose PW

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Not sure what else Lazar can do with the Oil Kings, but I am not 100% against him going and being absolutely dominant to pump up his confidence even more.

    • AutoTurris

Edit* Bring Lazar up for his prescribed amount of games and then send him back*

    • Hax

Wouldn’t be against Lazar in junior or Ceci in Bingo … but I’d rather see both playing for the NHL club. Murray can clear the spots.

      • AutoTurris

I agree with you 100%, I just mean if it came to that

    • A-Train

One thing to remember about Lazar is that he hasn’t actually “dominated” in any of his junior assignments.

His status as an exciting prospect is based more on positive reviews from his coach at the WJC, the Sens staff and his great season and playoffs with the Oil Kings.

He wasn’t team captain. He didn’t lead his team in points. He was not clearly the best player in any of the games I watched him play in.

He appears to be a guy with a great attitude and a very solid 2-way game. That’s all good, but I don’t think we can say having him spend another season in junior would be an obvious mistake.

    • Pasky

Lazar will get his 9 game tryout but I think signing Legwand means the team doesn’t want him as a Top 3 C for the team, and unless there’s a trade Smith is locked in as 4th C…. And considering the logjam on the right side I just don’t see Lazar on the team ndxt season unless in his audition he completely rapes the competition. But he isn’ta player that dominates, he’s more of yhat complementary piece that wins you games like Brown is a good example.

I would still like to see a trade for an upgrade at LW but if it doesn’t happen the team won’t look too bad. Worst case is if they keep Lazar then Ryan can shift to LW and Hoffman & Greening can share 4th line.

      MacArthur-Turris-Stone
      Ryan-Zibanejad-Chiasson
      Michalek-Legwand-Lazar
      Greening-Smith-Neil
      Hoffman-Condra

This is what I would role with for his 9 game tryout. Swap Chiasson & Lazar based on Chemistry

  • Tcharger – #TheFansFault
    • Hax

      I assume that’s from today?

GOODPOINT–> NO STATE INCOME TAX:You hear this all the time about states like Texas and Florida, that their free agent pitches have a built in competitive advantage. Here’s my question; in cap-centric leagues like the NBA, NHL and NFL, I wonder why this loophole wouldn’t be closed. In my opinion, the cap is set up to ‘level the playing field’ and teams in states that have a distinct advantage with the net income equation have the upper hand. Not sure if this has ever been considered but my thought is based upon this advantage – why don’t the leagues set the cap based upon what the money means on the back end in net income per team, so it’s equal. In 98 per cent of the cases you’re dealing with players that are in the highest taxable tax bracket in their state or Country, so why not do the research and base the cap number (which is equal) to the after tax value in each market and even the cap that way. TSN

    • Hax

Then it would cost more money to run a team in a city with higher taxes. The goal of the cap (really) is to fix spending for the teams. Competitive balance is secondary.

      • dasammy89

how would it cost more money

        • Hax

Aren’t you suggesting that teams in high tax cities would have a higher cap number? And that they could offer players the same pay after taxes as they get in no tax cities?

          • dasammy89

reporter covering the raptors on tsn actually wrote that. i think he is suggesting that teams with no taxes should have there cap lowered to level the playing field…its definitely possible just got to work it out.

          • Hax

Okay so then it costs less to pay a team in no/low tax cities. Either way, it gets away from the real reason these league owners want a cap – to fix spending. That’s why the cap is and always will be based on the amount the team spends, not the amount the players get to keep after taxes.

          • dasammy89

its a pretty significant advantage..id like to see it addressed somehow.

          • Hax

            Not disagreeing there.

          • Conans River

Its is not that hard to do. Only thing holding it up is the basic fact that all NHL teams in these low tax zones are not that great with little evidence of a potential dynasty on the horizon.
So how would you do it if the NHL wanted it?

TAX cap factor and it is simple math. It is the cap multiplied by a number less then one.

          • peetypuck

I think this could easily be fixed by a group of experts. For example, players getting a tax advantage could have their tax advantage taxed away by the league and players union with the money distributed evenly to all the players. That’s just one way to level the field.

          • MisterUtterbag

Id be in favour of that

          • Hax

That might work – i.e. they “tax” players to even things up and the money goes into the NHLPA escrow or something.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Well thought out…Is the NHLPA hiring?? apply hahaha

          • peetypuck

It seems fair enough to me, at first thought. It would level the playing field for Canadian teams vs US teams.

    • peetypuck

I wrote about “leveling the field” when it comes to tax advantages last week. Not much response.

      • Conans River

        U2 ….good idea

    • Conans River

      good idea

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I think this is a good idea on paper, but getting it approved and implemented would be almost impossible.

    • Phil.

I don’t see the NHLPA being in favor of this because of the risk that some players might take home less money (I don’t think you could increase the cap for places with higher taxes, you would have to lower it in places with less taxes).

      • Hax

They could phase it in. Next year if/when the cap goes up only raise it in the highest tax cities. Or raise it more there etc.

        • Phil.

I am not oppose to the concept or similar alternatives. It has, however, been my observation that if a single player risks losing a single penny, the NHLPA will oppose it.
And it would have to wait until the current CBA expires. So we have a few years to debate this…

  • CUP 2014-15

I think what amazed me most about Stone was not his improved skating, although it was great to see. I was surprised at how good his stick work is. He has to be one of if not the best on the team at take aways. Looking forward to seeing what he can do this year. One thing to keep an eye on is before the call up of Zibby last year the line was Zibby with Stone and Hoff. Might be the starting third line this year unless BM finds another quality left winger to bump Stone and Zibby to 2nd line min.

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I was one of the guys who truly doubted Stone would amount to much more than a third liner with a little more scoring touch than most. Needless to say I am extremely surprised, impressed, and excited.

I have even recently used him in trade suggestions, and still think that he very well may be moved(but at a massively larger value than when we drafted him), but we may end up regretting it if he keeps progressing at the same rate that he has been.

      • A-Train

Oh, I agree. So much potential. But also the potential to net a good piece back if that’s the decision Murray takes.

I actually think if he can put his game together he has the potential to be an NHL captain.

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

He does seem to have leadership, at least I perceived him to at the scrimmage yesterday(hard to really know what players are saying to each other)

Oh also something kind of interesting I just remembered, some guy sitting close to me at one point was decked out in all Chicago Blackhawks gear. Wonder if he was a scout…should have asked him, he kept talking to my son and was shocked at how large he was for only being 2

      • CUP 2014-15

I hope they don’t move him. I like the way our right side is coming together. Big, aggressive with lots of offense. Ryan, Chiasson, Stone and Lazar will be a nice tough 2way group

        • ProfessorPower

I highly highly doubt you move Stone. You don’t trade away guys you stole in the 6th round, you keep them and be proud of your scouting and developing abilities. Not putting in all that work just to trade him before we see what he truly becomes. Future Team Canada player imo.

          • CUP 2014-15

agreed, I also like his kid like reaction to the team scoring. He just seems to be one happy camper every time he’s out there. I can see him being a strong 2nd line RW behind Ryan for years to come.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

at 6’3″ I’d like to see him throw a few extra pounds on, anyone know what he came into camp at this year?

          • ProfessorPower

I think he is around 210

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Not bad, its hard to get a good indication of weight with all of their equipment on.

          • ProfessorPower

hockey players are all bottom heavy, He’s got a big frame that he can probably add 5-10 pounds on easy. I think he could possibly end up being close to 220

          • CUP 2014-15

The problem is they still list players at their draft weight in some cases. JC was listed at around 225 last year and C.Schwartz in an interview last year said JC plays at a solid 238. Same as Gryba. met him last year and if that guy is 220 then ZS is 150lbs.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Hahaha, yeah I saw Cowen at Baton Rouge and there is absolutely no way he is almost 240.

          • CUP 2014-15

when I saw ZS and EG they were with Methot and I just noticed that the website has MM outweighing EG and there is no f#@&ing way MM is close to the same size.

          • ProfessorPower

hah Ya I love the way he gets amped up when someone scores. Exactly, Stone and Ryan will be great RW’s for years to come..6’2 6’3 210 scoring wingers. I am thinking he is going to play 2nd line next year which should really help Zib out, Stone is a great passer and Zibanejad has a rocket of a one timer.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I was looking at our potential lineups, and I have a feeling Ryan moves to his off wing to start the season. He played there lots in Ana, and apparently he has said he prefers it.

          • ProfessorPower

So you think they are going to move him on Zibs wing? I think most people pencil him on the Turris line because everyone work so well together. But I could see it..something llike

            Macarthur-Turris-Stone
            Ryan-Zibanejad-Chiasson
            Michalek-Legwand-Lazar

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Yeah, I basically came out with that. I think if we move Michalek down that far he has a much more likely chance to regain his offensive touch. He really isn’t a top line player night in and night out anymore.

Those are three VERY well balanced lines, that would require attention at all times.

          • ProfessorPower

Ya and I think Legwand will be good for him. You can roll those 3 lines evenly and have a competitive group.

          • Keregan

i really like that top 9

          • peetypuck

            That looks really good.
How about bringing up Peumple and putting him on the 4th line with Smith and Neil. Give him 4th line minutes plus PP time.
            Peumple – Smith – Neil.
Keep Condra as our 13th forward and move Greening. Or… move Greening and Smith and put Peumple, Lazar and Neil on the 4th line.
            Peumple – Lazar – Neil.

          • CUP 2014-15

I have the same thing scratched into a number of lineups I have played with. I think this is the right move unless BM gets Kane or another top 6 LW or Puemple knocks their socks off in camp and can grab that 3rd LW moving Milo into 2nd. Can’t wait to find out what happens with this trade if it happens.

      • Andrews theory

I think you need to let him progress before trading him. Prove his worth at the highest level then if you need to do something so be it.

Not easy to find guys that big with hands that soft though especially on inexpensive deals

    • Sensnation

Would be a nice line to see translate the chemistry. Murray keeps hinting at 1st or 2nd line for Zibby though, not sure I want a full season of Hoffman playing that many minutes.

      • CUP 2014-15

Ya, I am hoping for a Kane type of LW to add to the Zibb and Stone or Chiasson line. I think Stone and Chiasson will be an interesting battle for 2nd line min. behind BR

I think BMurr needs to save MacLean from himself. Needs to trade Greening and Neil before they can be overplayed this season.

Shouldn’t have laughed as hard as I did at this, but am now cleaning my laptop screen of the coffee I spit on it.

    • Pasky

lol…. Ithink Chiasson replaces Neil as the big body on the PP at least so I’m not worried about that. Greening hopefully goes to Chicago or Winnipeg for one of Kane or Sharp, or for whatever if that doesn’t work.

I know Yost blog mentioned Condra being shopped as well. I think that happens only because we have Ryan Stone Chiasson & Neil already wigh Lazar in the picture.

    • ProfessorPower

Why dont we trade Greening in a package with prospects and picks for a top 4 D or top 6 power forward. Then sign Carcillo for 1 mil, if our 4th line is Carcillo-Smith-Neil they wont play much at all…and when they do it will at least be entertaining lol

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Man, I actually really like that lineup, and what is even crazier is there is still 12 mil in space! So it isn’ t even unrealistic.

        • CUP 2014-15

Like it a lot but two problems, EK and MILO are both LW and PW is a disaster on the right side, the only player worst on that side is JC and take a look at Methot’s twitter account. NHL Defensman preferably on the left side.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Yeah, the D is by far what needs the most work there.

          • AutoTurris

While I agree, realistically we are not going to be able to land a top 4 D man without giving up a PW or JC. The Phillips contract could be the worst decision that has ever been made in sporting history, but I could be exaggerating. With that oaf on the roster, we’re going to have to give up top end youth to get someone worthwhile

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Not sure you are exaggerating lol

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I’m still holding out hope that we somehow snag both Kane and bufuglien

          • AutoTurris

Okay if we were to do a blockbuster like that I would be okay with shipping out some players people wouldn’t wanna see leave; Weir, Stone, etc

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

yeah, I honestly am not sure what it would take.

If we got both those guys, I think I even be OK with moving our 1st next year, there is NO way we would be near the bottom of the East.

            Weichioch
            Stone
            Greening
            2015 1st
            2015 2nd

            for

            Evander Kane
            Byfuglien

Is that even close to enough?

          • AutoTurris

I would do Weir, Gryba, Greening, Prince, Dallas 2nd and our third 2015. That is more than enough I think, and I want to keep our 1st, that’s not moving

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

True, didn’t think to include Prince, who I am sure is moving after skipping the scrimmage.

I think if we deal with Winnipeg though it is almost 100% Stone going to them .

          • AutoTurris

Although I didn’t give one good piece in mine, but whatever it doesn’t matter. Is BM even speaking with WPG to your knowledge?

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

            No clue haha

          • Jakester

            That’s plenty.

          • laffin681021

We aren’t going to not have a 1st rounder 2 years in a row. 1st stays with us

        • Sandy

If you are trading for Evander Kane, then my guess is Stone would be going the other way. He is from Winnipeg and I assume that would ask for him.

  • In the Bleachers

rhetorical question of the month (just heard on CBC)
“I wonder who’s going to take the Argentine penalty kick?”

  • peetypuck

I see that Boston needs to move a big salary to re-sign about 5 players.
If you were Chiarelli and Murray would you swap Tukka Rask ($7 million) for Robin Lehner?

    • AutoTurris

      Hahahahahahhahaha

Wait just let me re-read that…

      Hahahahhahaa

      • peetypuck

It sounds funny at first glance but Boston has to move a big salary. I don’t think it will be Chara, Bergeron or Lucic. IF Lehner is as good as everyone says, Boston moves salary and still gets back a #1 goalie even though he is very young.

    • In the Bleachers

I like your cloning Booby Orr and Terry Sawchuk plan better

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

      ummmmmmmmmmmm

      • peetypuck

It all depends on how good Chiarelli feels that Lehner is. Everyone in Ottawa feels he will be great.

    • Zelle

I’m not trying to say Rask is a downgrade but why would we trade Lehner?

      • peetypuck

Rask is a proven playoff goalie. His numbers are among the best in the NHL. Just what Ottawa needs…a proven #1 goalie with tonnes of playoff experience.

        • AutoTurris

That is exactly why he will never be traded

          • peetypuck

Probably not but Chiarelli is in a tight spot. He can move his proven goaltender for a hotshot rookie or he can start dismantling his team.

          • AutoTurris

Trust me, I would do Lehner for Rask in a heartbeat, but it will never happen, ESPECIALLY into the East. Chara will be moved before he is

          • peetypuck

That’s what happens now when your team goes over the cap ceiling. Everyone else has you by the short and curlies. There just aren’t that many teams that can take a big salary this year without sending back a big salary.

          • MisterUtterbag

Maybe seidenberg, boychuk, kreijci or Eriksson

            And more likely west

          • peetypuck

He’ll get nothing back for them but scraps. That’s what you get when you are forced to trade someone this year. Did you notice all the trades and UFA signings done already.

          • MisterUtterbag

Goalie swap is interesting if they weren’t in our division.

          • peetypuck

They’re trading Quality 4 Quality. Where else is Boston going to get that?

          • MisterUtterbag

            I’ve always liked boychuk

And of course krejci but he’s not moving

        • Zelle

True, although he did get lit up against the Habs. Plus the organization has pretty much groomed him. Plus Lehner is the perfect age for the club.

          • peetypuck

Then he has to move several other players to stay under the cap ceiling. That’s why I posed this question.
What would you do in Chiarelli’s place?

          • Zelle

            Touche… good question!

      • SENSible Voice

Proven stats always win over potential. I’d take Rask over Lehner.

Rask has a 7M cap hit however, we’d probably be spending over 5M on the Anderson/Lehner tandem. With a cheap backup goalie, we’d probably be spending only 2M more but that would solidify the goaltending for years… something Ottawa has never had for any length of time.

    • Sensnation

If I was Chiarelli, hell no. If I was Murray I’d say thank you peetypuck for making me gm of the year!

      • peetypuck

What would you do to keep the Bruins under the cap?

        • Sensnation

Under the cap? Capgeek says they are and that includes Marc Savard’s salary that will be put on LTIR. I know they have to sign a few people still, but I’m not sure it’s that tight. Worse comes to worse though you trade Marchand, Kelly or Eriksson, not your core premium players.

          • peetypuck

They are $2 million under the cap. They have five players they need to re-sign, Torrey Krug and Reilly Smith included. They are going to want substantial raises. That will push the Bruins up to $75-$76 million, about $7 million over. Minus Savard’s salary, ($4 million) that still leaves them $3 million over approximately. Then they need to replace Marchand, Kelly or Eriksson. Add a couple million on there.

          • Sensnation

They obviously would have to replace them internally or via UFA for cheaper. I highly doubt they are moving their key pieces for that. When Chicago won the cup and then went over the cap they kept their main pieces intact and moved some average to above average ones.

          • peetypuck

I believe they traded their goalie.

          • Sensnation

SJ offer sheeted their dman, to then force the goalie trade. They are now trying to get a better/additional goalie because he’s good but as I said just above average. Position doesn’t equate to elite skill level.

          • SENSible Voice

Did they not go over the cap last year and thus as a penalty their actual cap this year will be reduced by the amount they went over last year?

          • peetypuck

            I think you’re right.
I think that was bonuses where they went over.

          • MisterUtterbag

How much did they go over?

          • peetypuck

I’m not sure. I hadn’t even thought of that before you mentioned it.

          • MisterUtterbag

Capgeek shows 600k or so in bonuses. Doesn’t seem to be reflected in the over-age

          • peetypuck

What about Iginla. Wasn’t most of his salary in bonuses?

          • MisterUtterbag

I heard that. So maybe they need to pay up now

          • SENSible Voice

Actually CapGeek shows a carry-over of 4.78M from last year’s bonuses leaving BOS with only 1.6M to re-sign 5 players. They are the team with the most serious cap issue and so expect some moves from them. They will try to get rid of Kelly’s contract but in all likelyhood a big name will have to be moved.

          • zippy

So they went for broke signing Iginla, and lost huge to MTL.
Now they come down to earth. I like it.

We could move some assets for Kelly/Krejci/Boychuk

          • SENSible Voice

I wouldn’t touch Kelly. They may have to move a big key player (Lucic, Krejci, Chara or Rask) or a couple of smaller ones (Kelly, Marchand, Boychuk). My bet is that they move a key player, either Lucic or Chara. Chara would make the most sense given his age (37) and signs that he has begun slowing down yet still has 4 yrs left at a cap hit of just under 7M.

          • SENSible Voice

They were over by 4.75M and to further complicate things for them, they have to be cap compliant before they put Savard on LTIR.

    • laffin681021

Rask isn’t being traded. Don’t even think about it because it would never be an option at this point in time.

  • ProfessorPower

Our forward group is decent now with the kids coming up. I am going off the SJS/Ottawa rumor – if true, we should target Brent Burns hopefully throwing Greening as part of the package, possibly adding guys like Prince Wiercioch Hoffman and 2nd round picks. Sign Carcillo and target a top 6 forward at the trade deadline to put us over the top, potentially trading Anderson at that time (based on Lehner). Start the season with:

    Macarthur-Turris-Stone
    Ryan-Zibanejad-Chiasson
    Michalek-Legwand-Lazar
    Carcillo-Smith-Neil

    Methot-Karlsson
    Cowen-Burns
    Philips-Ceci
    Boro Gryba

    Lehner
    Anderson

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

      Another interesting option.

      • ProfessorPower

I just like him because he’s Pesky. I think the only reason he could be available is because SJS might want to make a big change..and if they can’t move Thortton or Marleau another key piece could be shipped out. The best thing about Burns is he can also be a power forward..Ryan-Zibanejad-Burns would be a very hard line to play against. Like you said however, getting Kane and Byfuglien would be better..just more expensive.

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Yeah, I think we’ve got the assets to pull off the bufuglien/Kane deal… Big buf can do the power forward gig as well, especially on the pp nobody can move him from the front of the net

          • ProfessorPower

Buff is more likely to get traded than Burns is too. AND he has won a cup!

          • Sensnation

If we could afford Kane and Bufuglien on our budget I feel like Spezza would still be here. 1 may be doable, but I doubt both.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Yeah that Damn budget… Although it is a little more open without Spezza (i would assume)

          • Sensnation

            The Legwand Flexibility Coefficient lol

    • peetypuck

Where does this rumour originate? I hope not from Ekland.

    • sprucesens

our 4th line would never leave the penalty box

    • laffin681021

      Keep weircioch!

  • Zelle

Legwand on choosing Ottawa: “We had other options. I think Ottawa is a place where I liked the coaching staff, I played against Paul MacLean a lot when he was with
Detroit and obviously with Jason Spezza leaving I thought it was a good fit for myself. Obviously they have a great group of young hockey players and they’ve got a top five
defenceman in the League and guys up front like Clarke MacArthur, Kyle Turris, Bobby Ryan, Milan Michalek and those guys are great hockey players. It’s an exciting time there and it should be a good season for us.”

Awesome that he mentioned the whole first line and sees an opportunity in Spezza leaving instead of a problem.

    • spgottawa

How is this possible? It’s proven gospel according to some posters on this site that no one wants to come to Ottawa. Lol.
Next up, Ryan and MacArthur are extended (maybe Methot)….
      Lehner signs. And the Trade

      • Harv

I wondered about that as well. Interesting that Legwand sought the advice of know nothings like Fisher and York when the real knowledge is right here. He could have just signed in and saved the price of a phone call.

Seriously, though, have you noticed how wrong many of the negative comments prove to be?

        • peetypuck

          Mass hysteria.

          • Harv

Interesting detailed discussion of the mythical trade of Rask for Lehner. Where do these imaginations come from?

          • peetypuck

Just speculation. You have to think outside the box.

          • MisterUtterbag

Well it lead to interesting discussion about BOS

          • peetypuck

It gets really tiring listening to all the negative talk around here.

          • MisterUtterbag

            I ignore it

        • 010101111010101101010111100011

The Negative Nellies who hang out here (you know who I’m talking about) aren’t about solid analysis and even handed opinions
They’re all about bashing the same players over and over and over and over and over …
It’s kind of pathetic that this is their only pleasure in life.

    • Sensnation

A career in Nashville sure makes a player look at the cup as half full. Truthfully if we’re becoming the Nashville of the east, there’s no better player to be adding to the team. Great signing, and great attitude coming in!

  • spgottawa

Question? If you are BM do you try to extend Craig Anderson? An extension may make him more desirable in a trade if you decide to take that route and would give you the option of trading him after the playoffs as opposed to before the deadline…

    • Sensnation

Personally I feel that only works if he has a bounce back year. Considering Lehner will be stealing more starts from him, it may be hard. His value may actually be best as a deadline rental to a team bound for the playoffs with weak goaltending or goalie depth. The fact he won’t be signed in longterm lets them know they won’t be stuck with an aging vet they just wanted to rent. If it does work out for them they can always re-sign him. Goalie market is a tough one in the NHL, hard to expect much back for Anderson without a top 10 season.

      • HamadBo$$

Anderson wasn’t bad this year considering how bad the defense in front of him was. I think they should sign him an extension for like 2 years so he share duties with lehner or serve as his backup

        • Sensnation

Anderson was like Gerber, not good enough. I would not re-sign him at all, we have 2-3 more goalie prospects working up the system right now, no need to tie money into a backup who will want to be paid like a starter.

          • Laurence Babchyuk

You’re kidding right ? Not good enough ? Anderson is the best goalie that this team has ever got. You must have a very short term memory cause he put this team twice in the playoffs while they were suppose to be at the bottom of the league.

This year… It was continuous 2 on 1 cause by our beloved captain. Now he’s gone they won’t have as many odd man rush and they will be able to do a nice break out.

Lehner had a chance to shine this year when we were fighting for a playoff spot and Andy got hurt. He simply drop the ball and didn’t do a good enough job to keep the team within reach of the playoffs. He loss like 7 in a row and he was sub par when we needed him the most.

2 on 1s and odd rushes are a killer for every goalie.

If you think that Andy isn’t the best we’ve had I wonder who was better.

As for Lehner, I was a fan until he dropped the ball last year… But he’s still very young and might be a very good goalie one day. Just not sure if I want to give him the #1 spot that he hasn’t earned yet.

If he would’ve won 5 out of those 7 games last year, we would’ve made the playoffs ( cause spezza and Hemsky were finally starting to play good ) then he would’ve earned that #1 spot… But it didn’t happen that way

          • jimmyjohnson

Oh we’re putting the consistent 2-on-1′s on 1 guy now? lol okay.
Anyways, Anderson is easily the best goalie this team has ever employed (other than 6 months of domination).
THAT BEING SAID :), Lehner is the 2nd most naturally talented goalie this team has ever employed (again, save for 6 months of domination).
Imo there’s nothing to lose in releasing the Lehner this season. He has nothing left to learn other than how to be the starter and perform day-in, day-out. I’d rather they struggle to adapt to him this year than some later year.

    • Rafi Bomb

I would trade him. He won’t want to sign an extension without being guaranteed that he will be the number 1 for the rest of his contract.

With Lehner as the number 1 moving forward, Anderson won’t want to stick around.

  • MisterUtterbag

Just looked at burns. He’s a big boy and versatile

Question: is he first or second line? (On the Sens)

    • MisterUtterbag

      I meant as a forward

      • peetypuck

How about Ryan – Turris – Burns?
        MacArthur – Zibby – Chiasson
        Michalek – Legwand – Stone
        Peumple – Lazar – Neil.

        • MisterUtterbag

That has grit on every line.

Man the suspense is killing me

          • peetypuck

            I’m getting goosebumps.

        • HamadBo$$

I really like this lineup!! If only we could land burns :D

          • peetypuck

About a month ago I speculated that Bryan Murray and Melnyk might be aiming at 2017 to take the Stanley Cup. Canada’s 150th, the NHL’s 100th and the Sens 25th. Something like this would sure get us ready in advance. Maybe the Oilers might meet us in the finals. How good would that be?

          • HamadBo$$

Lol I’m glad you’re optimistic but thats just not happening, Melnyk’s internal cap won’t allow the sens to ever become contenders. But who knows maybe Melnyk will become rich and more generous?

          • MisterUtterbag

            Maybe more generous

            Gotta keep hoping.

I think he’ll spend more when Murray tells him it’s worth it

          • peetypuck

A good hockey team sells more season’s tickets and playoff games are pure profit for Melnyk.

          • MisterUtterbag

Yes but I think he wants to spend really wisely

            Maybe too wiselywisely for us

          • peetypuck

He only likes to spend on himself. Everywhere else it’s save, save save.

          • Magnus Nor

You think he would be able to spend more freely now that he is not bound to any wife.. :PPP

          • laffin681021

            Well you sure are Pessimistic…

    • spgottawa

I just don’t see SJ giving up Burns. Their D would look pretty weak without him. Still think Philly, Chicago or Boston are more likely trade partners because of their cap issues….

      • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I am pretty sure someone from Chicago was at the scrimmage yesterday

        • MisterUtterbag

          Bickell or versteeg?

          Bickell is LW

          • spgottawa

Bickell makes more sense for Ottawa because of his position and he’s about the right age that Murray might like in this kind of deal. With a cap hit of $4M Chicago wouldn’t be able to take much back in salary and still stay under the cap so prospects and/or picks may be what they are looking for. Ottawa still needs to give up a forward in the deal but someone cheap like Condra.

          • MisterUtterbag

Bickell would be awesome with zibby

      • ProfessorPower

Burns played forward for them this season. We would most likely be giving up Wiercioch in that package…I do agree that those other teams are evidently going to make moves, making them trade partner candidates.

        • Sensnation

Burns is rumored to be going back to D for them next year.

          • Rafi Bomb

They might have to move him in order to restructure their team due to the fact that Marleau and Thornton don’t want to leave and they have no interest in moving Couture, Hertl or Vlasic. That basically leaves Burns and Pavelski as their most valuable trade pieces.

          • Sensnation

I don’t think they’d have let Boyle go if they were going to replace him with Burns and then trade Burns. I agree they have to do something, I just would be amazed if it’s Burns as he seems like a bigger leader on that team than Thornton.

        • Pasky

At their end of year they said that they would let Boyle walk and put Burns back in the back end.

    • Wyzerd

I like Burns a lot, plus he can play D.

    • ProfessorPower

Burns give us the option to target the best player at the deadline EITHER forward or D. Then moving Burns to D or forward based on the acquisition. He can play both Wings and both D positions, gives us tons of options.

      • Keregan

imagine him and Cowen that would be quite a behemot pairing and scary as hell

        • Rafi Bomb

Ya, that would be a solid second pairing and it would make us harder to play against. A guy like Burns adds some much needed nastiness to our group on top of his skill.

        • ProfessorPower

they would be dynamite together, crushing forwards left and right. Coach McLellen called Burns “a one man wrecking ball” lol

          Forward:
          Ryan-Zibanejad-Burns
          Macarthur-Turris-Stone

          Defense:
          Methot-Karlsson
          Cowen-Burns

          • Keregan

plus he got such a manly beard

  • Sandy

Someone on Yost’s article wrote down a proposed lineup showing height & weight.

    MacArthur (6’0″, 195lb) – Turris (6’1″, 195lbs) – Ryan (6’2″, 207lbs)
    Michalek (6’2″ 216lbs) – Legwand (6’2″, 205lbs) – Chiasson (6’4″, 205lbs)
    Hoffman (6’0″, 185lbs)- Zibanejad (6’2″, 211lbs) – Stone (6’2″, 205lbs)
    Greening (6’3″, 210lbs) – Smith (6’2″, 210lbs) – Condra (6’0″, 190lbs)
    Neil (6’1″, 215lbs)

    Karlsson (6’0″, 180) – Methot (6’3″, 230lbs)
    Ceci (6’3″, 209lbs) – Cowen (6’5″, 228lbs)
    Phillips (6’3″, 220lbs) – Gryba (6’4″, 225lbs)
    Borowiecki (6’2″ 210lbs) – Weircioch (6’5″, 206lbs)

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

      Giving Karlsson 6’0″ is generous.

      • Sandy

That’s what he is now listed as. He is taller than Alfie who is 5 ft 11.

      • Keregan

        on skate maybe

    • Rafi Bomb

Neil is definitely a regular in the lineup. Both Condra and Hoffman will be extras at this point and Lazar is ahead of both. In terms of his current size Lazar is 6″0″, 203 lbs.

Overall we have some decent size to our lineup but not a ton of jam. It would be beneficial to add a bit more mean and nastiness to that group.

      • Keregan

also Dallas Gm said that Chiasson was more like 220lbs

        • Rafi Bomb

I wonder how well he has filled out his frame at this point. Nick Paul claimed to be 218 lbs and he still looks like he could put on a fair amount of size. So maybe Chiasson still has some additional weight that he could add to his frame.

          • Keregan

all in line with Murray philosophy Skill and Size

      • sprucesens

i would say hoffman and condra are ahead of lazar, simply because he can go down without being lost. we aren’t going to risk losing hoffman for nothing just to play lazar. conrda could be available through trade for a cap team, or any team wanting a defensive 4th liner. We’re running out of room for his skill set

        • Rafi Bomb

          That makes sense.

But Murray basically alluded to the fact that Lazar would be on the team during his press conference on July 1st. It has also been clear that Hoffman is far from a lock and still needs to crack the roster and may end up playing for another team this season. Then with Condra being shopped, there is a small chance he will be on the team.

    • spgottawa

      Bryan Bickell 6’4″ 223

      • Rafi Bomb

So in terms of potential trade targets:
        Evander Kane 6’2″, 195 lbs
        Brent Burns 6’5″, 230 lbs
Dustin Byfuglien 6’5″, 265 lbs (probably closer to 300 lbs)
        Patrick Sharp 6’1″. 199 lbs
        Andrew Ladd 6’3″ , 205 lbs
        Chris Stewart 6’2″, 231 lbs
        Patrick Marleau 6’2″, 220 lbs
        Brayden Schenn 6’1″, 190 lbs

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Two separate deals, get burns to play forward and bufuglien on d or vice versa haha

We would have to be one of the biggest teams in the league

          • Magnus Nor

Ye lets hope no one steps one our “small” players! ^^

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I swear my phone auto correct byfuglien to something different everytime

          • MisterUtterbag

I would like a”load nhl names ” button

          • Rafi Bomb

That would be awesome and the funny thing is that we likely have sufficient assets to acquire both without decimating our team. Those two would be pretty useful against big teams like LA and Anaheim.

          • Sandy

            SJ won’t trade Burns

    • Sensnation

Neil over Condra for sure. Nice lineup, probably the closest one to what we will see come the fall. Boro’s starting to look small in that group!

    • Garrioch’s reliable source

In which alternate Universe is King Karlsson 6 feet tall ?

      • jimmyjohnson

He’s like 5’10” and a half. That’s not a big deal. If it said 5’11 would you be happier?
        Who cares.

  • Rafi Bomb

So with Condra and Greening on the market, which teams might be interested in acquiring them?

    • HamadBo$$

I think we should keep Condra, he’s a good 4th liner as long as he is given 4th line minutes

      • 010101111010101101010111100011

he’s certainly getting 4th line money

      • Rafi Bomb

No, we have enough players that play a similar role to him. Also have of our team can play penalty kill so we aren’t in much of a need of a pk specialist.

We should have a different type of forward in that extra slot.

        • HamadBo$$

He plays a role in our good penalty kill…

    • 010101111010101101010111100011

Greening – none – unless an equally bad contract comes back

Condra – any team near the cap ceiling that needs a really cheap contract to fill out their 4th line

      • MisterUtterbag

I thought CHI was high on greening

        • 010101111010101101010111100011

          but way higher on Smith

          • Magnus Nor

Dammit I want some new rumors or proof of anything im starving!!

          • MisterUtterbag

Greening is the guy you trade then bites you in the ass in the playoffs

          • Magnus Nor

            I´ll take that chance!

      • Rafi Bomb

Condra might fit in well on a team that has a defense first mentality, plays a puck possession game and doesn’t have much concern about having grit or toughness in their lineup. Maybe Detroit would be a good fit.

    • Kumar

      None

  • peetypuck

Spezza is practically forgotten already. That didn’t take too long to get over.

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I am not surprised, it is pretty obvious that the team took this opportunity to completely change their identity.

Even as the team stands now(in our speculated lineups) I am actually cautiously optimistic about how we do. I have a feeling next year will either be a total boom, or a complete and utter bust. I don’t see us finishing in the middle, it will be competing for the top, or the bottom.

      • peetypuck

It makes me really look forward to October. I can’t wait to see the new team. Bigger and playing a full 200 foot game. I don’t think that we will lose much offence if any at all but we should be better defensively. Big and Pesky.

        • zippy

Me too. Rock on!!! Go Sens!!

Bring on the next huge winger.

      • jimmyjohnson

“I have a feeling next year will either be a total boom, or a complete and utter bust. I don’t see us finishing in the middle, it will be competing for the top, or the bottom”
Sorry but this ^^ doesn’t make any sense. I’m not going to get into it, but just know that there is no defensible logic to the above statement and it’s correlating concept.

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Thats fine, you don’t typically agree. but let me briefly explain my logic.

It basically boils down to whatever system is put into place…if Maclean decides to keep using players in the most odd situations we will be screwed. If he keeps benching players that shouldn’t be benched over old geezers we will be screwed. If he plays our lines the proper amounts and in the proper situations then I think we have a legitimate shot to make waves.

It really has nothing to do with the bodies them self, but the situations that they are put into and being given the proper opportunity to succeed considering their skill sets. Kind of like how I feel last year went down, I don’t think that we were as bad as the results showed.

          • sprucesens

i agree. If we give top time to turris and put zib in with quality wingers, playing 2nd line time, and legwand also with good wingers and 2b line time, we could be a very solid team. It all hinges on our 4th line playing 4th line time. If they get 2nd line time like they did this year, then we will be at the bottom of the league, because the young guys won’t have enough to be comfortable and create chemistry. Could be a large amount of turnover from last year, with 2/3rds of “top” line gone. Essentially chaisson and legwand in. Could be another 2 bodies on the move, 1 D and 1 of condra/greening/neil/smith. Thus making a spot for lazar, and getting down to 7 D.

So if we put zib with neil and condra, playing them 4th line minutes, then have a line with say… hoffman, smith, greening playing 2nd line minutes, we probably won’t do well. And i like hoffman more than most

          • jimmyjohnson

That’s fair, but let me explain my logic:
If they are potentially good enough to be at the top, they are potentially good enough to be somewhere in the middle.
If they are potentially bad enough to be at the bottom, they are potentially not-that-bad enough to be not all the way at the bottom.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Fair enough… But Maclean has demonstrated his stubborness so he may stick with a program that he thinks should work just to be stubborn.. Making the team drop a lot further than they should

          • jimmyjohnson

He’s said explicitly though that the system needs tweaking to make it easier on the team. I doubt it’ll be an issue. We’ll be right there with Tampa, Montreal (although losing GIonta could have greater consequences than expected), Toronto, and maybe Detroit and Florida (all of whom are as likely to be trailing Boston as we are).
All of that ^^ is a very convoluted way of saying the tiers in this div Imo are:
            Boston
            -
            -
            -
            Tampa, Mtl, Tor, Ott
            -
            Detroit, Florida
            -
            -
            -

            —————–
            Buffalo
            (lol)

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

            Haha pretty accurate though.

          • jimmyjohnson

Yeah maybe, I think if I post something like that again tho, it’ll show Ottawa with Detroit and Florida. I think just given the way last season played out, it’s unreasonable to have Ottawa with teams that were legit for most of the season.

Edit: I’m actually going to adjust it. What do you think?

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Boston hasn’t really done anything to improve though have they?(drawing a total blank on any moves that they have done this off season)

          • jimmyjohnson

They lost Iginla and Thornton. That’s it, IIRC.
That’s still not enough to limit their potential. That team was built to roll with the punches. As long as Chara is playing at or near his peak, and Rask is healthy and playing in that system….they’ll be leading the division, almost assuredly.
I see what you’re saying though. A fall from grace is usually inevitable. I still have them as a Cup contender.

Another good example of why Boston should still be considered a lock for the top is a team like Toronto. All they did was lose roster players, but they are all the more likely to benefit from addition by subtraction and the maturation of young players (especially Reilly and Gardiner), not to mention the increased comfort and confidence of Bernier in the crease. They are a definite team to watch in the East. Still not Cup worthy, but will be a tough team to beat.

          • jimmyjohnson

I’ll leave this as is and I’d welcome your feedback, but even as I look at it now, I feel like Ottawa being with DET and FLA is maybe a little more accurate.

      • laffin681021

I disagree. I think we’ll be challenging for a wild card spot next year.

        • zippy

          Spezza/Turris/Zibanedjad/Smith

          VS
          Turris/Zibby/Legwand/Smith/Lazar

Legwand brings a lot of determination, and leadership for Lazars.

There’s much less pressure on Zibby this year, and a year more of experience.

And likely C for Karlsson..who IMO can handle it. His game will not change.

          • laffin681021

I don’t know why you guys are so high on Lazar so early. He’s going to be a great hockey player and probably the star of the team someday but this kid hasn’t played 2 second of an NHL game and you guys think he’s going to be a game changer night in and night out right off the bat. It probably wont happen and hell if it does you can come back to me and I’ll admit I was wrong but I don’t see it happening. We’ll be battling for a wild card spot..mark my words

    • jimmyjohnson

There’s about 15-25 people crying in their sens gear over at the RSU.
Everyone else is just happy to have a team full of people who want to be here.
Personally, the Michalek-Spezza tandem being at an end is the best gift possible this off-season.

  • MikeS

So I remember a couple years ago some people suggested the sens change goalies for the shootouts but most people said it was a bad idea, Netherlands just did it in the world cup!

    • spgottawa

      And they won!

  • zippy

So. Bickell or Evander Kane? 4 mill/3 yrs vs 5.2/4 yrs.

Both would look good with Zibby.

    • sprucesens

kane 10 times out of 10. take the young gifted goal scorer with speed, and has produced with less talent by himself, than the pricier slower bigger bodied bickell, who is really just a more expensive greening, riding the coat tails of top talent

    • Keregan

if you want Kane, ou will have to give Zib as a starting point :( well likely

      • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

        Im not convinced

        Weir
        Stone
        Greening
        2015 1st
        2015 2nd

        Kane
        Byfuglien

You add those two pieces and I am certain that our 1st next year is a late pick(unless Maclean becomes Maclown again and plays Neil 20 mins)

        • Sandy

No way the Sens should give up the 2015 first round pick in a really good draft. That’s not happening.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Consider Kane that pick. If you add these two pieces ir won’t be a high pick.

He’ll add these two to our current lines and I think we would be battling for top in the east

          • Jakester

You complete that trade and Sens are pretty close to being the best team in the East!

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

            EXACTLY

But but but what about the 29th pick in the first round! I bet half the people saying its an amazing draft don’t know anyone after Mcdavid, and Eichel.

          • Jakester

Like you, I wouldn’t care. Let’s just win.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

If that first is the sticking point you can try Prince(and obviously I anticipate that would be where it started) who knows, maybe you can swap him out for Stone.

There are SO many prospects with legitimate shots we actually have to make a deal like this.

          • peetypuck

Hanifan… rated #3 prospect in the draft.

          • Jakester

            You show off! Lol

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I would put money that 9 out of 10 posters would have to even google that tho, let alone going much further.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I do typically agree with that sentiment though

          • Jakester

You get two pieces like that and who gives a Rats Ass about the 2015 draft. We have prospects coming out of our Ying Yang!

        • Maxwell Smart

the OLDDDD bag of junks parts for another team’s
          top level player offer
fifth one if these that I’ve mocked today

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

What piece included in that offer is junk?

Only one is Greening(and a fair number of teams are rumored to have at least some interest in him, so maybe as usual we are being harder on him than we should be)

          • sprucesens

what was the spezza trade, dare i ask?

      • ProfessorPower

Neal Spezza and Kesler didn’t get a prospect close to Zibby’s value. Neither will Kane.

        • Magnus Nor

          contracts and NTC?

          • ProfessorPower

Doesn’t matte, BM will not give up more than he got back from the Spezza trade. That would put his job at risk.

    • HamadBo$$

just to be clear has evander kane been in the rumors or is it just a wish sens fans have?

      • Spoons

Both Kane and Bickell are fan sourced rumours.

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Well Kane is always rumoured to be on the block

    • savagestix

I have no clue what you see in bickell he doesnt average 30 pts a year and is not a top 6 forward

Evander kane yes for sure maybe for wiercioch stone and prince would make it happend
      Wishful thinking i guess

  • Kumar

Kane will cost us more. First Bryan should look to resign Bobby Ryan. If the talks don’t go well then he could be the piece we could move to get a player or two.

Greening and Condra will not get us anything. In fact, no team will take them, especially Greenings contract is steep.

If Ryan signs with us, then we can look to address Kane. Definitely we should try to throw 2016 1st not 2015. Stone will be part of the deal. Jets will ask for Lazar too.

Honestly I will like to add Andrew Laad.

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

You don’t think the NHL scouts know the 2015 is a better draft, you need to give to get quality pieces

      • Kumar

First of all, we are not sure Kane is a team player or not. I will not risk too much on an known asset.
We need team players and if he is then it is worth throwing top picks. First of all, 2015 draft is something we should hold on to get a top level player. With the exception of Karlsson, we never drafted a top tier in the last decade.

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

And what’s to say we do in that draft?

          • Magnus Nor

I doubt Murray trade our 1st rounder twice in a row + when its so strong..

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I tend to agree, I would be surprised, but with our scouting he may feel he can steal enough quality in the 2nd and beyond that a mid to late 1st(which I admit I am assuming is where our pick would be if we made a deal like this) won’t kill us.

          • Andrews theory

Plus Sens have two seconds in 2015..

I’m not a big fan of trading Wiercioch but it’d be tolerable if he’s part of a package to bring in Kane, ditto on Hoffman. Teams aren’t getting a kings ransom on first line players.

We just gave up Spezza for 1 guaranteed NHL player
Pitts gave up Neal for a small return and Vancouver didn’t do much better IMO.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Exactly, I am not sure why people are thinking that suddenly the trade market is going to provide returns three times any of the others this off season.

    • 010101111010101010101010101010

Assuming that Kane is even on the trading block the
junk that you people are offering for him will
easily be topped by teams like the Islanders

Kane would cost Ottawa at least one of Zibby / Ceci / Lazar
and another NHL player and a high draft pick.

Willing to pay that price ?
      NO ? THEN MOVE ON

      • Keregan

        agreed

      • Jakester

You’re nuts, he’s isn’t worth that much.sorry thought you meant all 3 haha

Probably Stone,Hoffman, prospect, and our first in2015. I’d do it. Winnipeg needs forwards!

  • spgottawa

I know Chicago is in the mix and Winnipeg keeps coming up but I still have a feeling it’s Philly or Buffalo or Boston….

    • laffin681021

Is there actually a rumor for Winnepeg or is it just people having their fantasies because I haven’t heard anything with them

      • Keregan

        fantasies all the way

        • spgottawa

I think you are correct. Chicago, though has been rumoured in more knowledgeable circles. And so have Philly and Buffalo.
          What about Boston?

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

For what it is worth there was an older guy decked out in Chicago gear at the scrimmage(the outfit looked very similar to the Sens issued ones)

          • jimmyjohnson

            That’s just….that’s so, SOOOO random.
I’ve never seen that before. If there’s ever been reps from other teams before, they’ve been in plain clothes.
I’m very surprised by this news. I think it narrows the team down to one. I’m not one to speculate on trades, but Murray says there’s a trade all but worked out save for the other team deciding on a prospect; and now there’s a CHI rep in team apparel watching our prospects play? lol. That’s pretty straight forward, I think.

      • zippy

WPG has been chatting about trading Kane for about 6 months.

But that was about “issues” with him. Which makes a trade less appealing

    • peetypuck

Chicago, Philly and especially Boston have to shed salary. We have lots of cap space. They have to be speaking to Murray. Any one of them could offer up something if they are desperate enough.

      • Sandy

Philly has Pronger’s LTIR which will get them under the cap. If they were stupid enough to do the Lecavalier contract well too bad live with it.
Boston has Marc Savard’s LTIR, but the young players they have to sign may be more than his salary coming off.
Chicago is stuck — they need to trade someone without taking salary back.

        • peetypuck

Boston has to re-sign Torey Krug and Reilly Smith (plus about three others) who are going to want big raises. Even subtracting Savard’s salary Boston will still be over the cap by several million.

          • Sandy

They are stuck, so are Chicago.

    • zippy

Well Murray likes the West more for sure.

But if it’s prospects he’s dealing then that’s less of an issue.

I’m thinking CHI all the way

  • Kumar

I only threw scenarios. I believe we are done with signings for next season. May be I am missing something here. Where do guys see that there is a potential trade to happen ???

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Because there are essentially too many players for every position. There actually almost has to be another trade.

      • Jakester

We should deal Neil out west for a pick. One less body. Slowly chip away at the numbers. Then Condra and Greening. Just find a way to move these guys!

        • laffin681021

I’d rather keep condra on our fourth line..may not score a lot but he’s solid defensively and drives possession.

    • spgottawa

BM came right out and said he was working on a trade but that was pre Legwand. I believe they still have to be working on something – even if you think the roster and budget look ok, 8 D is too many.

  • jimmyjohnson

If Tcharger is right that there was a CHI rep at the development camp, I don’t think there’s any point in speculating about other teams players. Like I said below, Murray says there’s another team that just needs to decide on the prospect they want, and now there’s a Chicago rep watching our prospects play. That’s pretty straight-forward.

Any trade ideas between us and CHI?
I’ve seen Sharp and Leddy for Greening, Smith, 2015 1st and a b+ prospect somewhere.
    Any others?

    • Deadly

How many defencemen do we need. if Leddy comes ,another d goes.

      • jimmyjohnson

I guess the theory is that the “maybe another deal” part of what Murray said was packaging a D or 2 and getting a pick or prospect in return.
I see what you mean though.

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Could this be a possible three way deal? Hence the hold up?

I mean I like Sharp, but I am not sure someone of his age helps us long term. Maybe we are flipping him and another D for another piece?

          • zippy

With Spezza we also lost leadership in offence, which I think Sharp could bring. There’s also the fact that not many players think as fast as Karlsson. When Spezz and Alfie and Karlsson turned it on, they were miles ahead of everyone else

          • Jakester

            Could be a doozy coming.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I am still thinking maybe just maybe prying one of the big guns out of Colorado. They are SO young, that having a veteran on the team could do a tonne for them.

          • Deadly

Which of our veterans would they be interested in obtaining? Do we have a veteran? Phillips for …

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I have had a few more than a few beers so going full on crazy three way trade speculating haha

Send something to Chicago and get Leddy and Sharp, then swap Sharp with something to Colorado

(could explain the delays, due to the fact that it isn’t as straight forward of a deal as usual)

          • Deadly

So let’s get Murray, Bowman and Sakic in a room and get them hammered.
            ROR to Ottawa.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

My wifes out…bring them to my living room! hahaha

          • Deadly

Beam them up Scotty.Sorry wrong Bowman.

          • peetypuck

We’re all coming over. Hope you got lots of beer.

          • Jakester

Wonder what Bryan sounds like when he’s hammered?

          • zippy

I bet he does great Monty Python impressions

          • Jakester

            Lol

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Don’t even know that we would have to send a TONNE to them on top of Sharp to get Oreilly.

          • jimmyjohnson

            Spezza for Chiasson ++

Chiasson, Wiercioch, Prince, 2nd for Sharp, Leddy

Sharp, Smith, Puempel, 2015 1st for Mackinnon (plus Murray agrees to tranquilize Mack and E.K. for a minimum of 20 games this season to make our 1st a little more worthwhile).

            And BOOM rebuild over…next year.
Definitely what Murray is planning! Book it.

          • zippy

That seems like alot for MacKinnon. Esp since it’s a strong draft.

            I’d keep Puempel.

          • jimmyjohnson

You’ll get nothing and like it!!

          • zippy

You must be married..just like me

          • peetypuck

You want to trade Chaisson, Wiercioch, Prince, our 2nd, Sharp, Smith, Peumpel and our 2015 1st for Leddy and MacKinnon?

          • jimmyjohnson

I replied to myself with a response to you lol.
I knew this type of reply was coming!!
            Short Answer: Yes.

          • peetypuck

Sorry, but giving up our 2nd is just going too far.

          • jimmyjohnson

I agree! That’s why it’s the DAL 2nd. Those ?? spots are too valuable to risk. Especially now that our 1st line is playing for DAL.

          • peetypuck

So we replace Chiasson with MacKinnon but now we have to replace Smith too.

          • jimmyjohnson

Our center depth after the deals is Mackinnon-Turris-Zibanejad-Pageau
I think we’ll be okay lol

          • jimmyjohnson

The end result on this is Spezza, L.Karlsson, Wiercioch, Prince, Smith, Puempel, and our 2015 1st for Mackinnon, Leddy, Guptill, and Paul.

Find me one person who wouldn’t do that deal and I’ll find you someone needing some sense slapped into them lol. We get Mackinnon and give up none of Karlsson, Turris, Lehner, Zibanejad, Ceci, Lazar, and maybe Cowen (he could still find his way into that group).

It’s maybe the most unlikely thing ever, but it’s damn fun to speculate on :D

          • zippy

            I’ll take a slap for 100 Alex.

          • jimmyjohnson

            And the answer is:
A team filled with A-level talent.

          • Sandy

Well for one, Sakic is not trading Nathan MacKinnon.
Sharp is not waiving his NTC to come to Ottawa.

          • jimmyjohnson

            Anyone can get traded.
No one has any clue where Sharp would waive to play.

          • jimmyjohnson

            Hoffman-Mackinnon-Ryan
            MacArthur-Turris-Stone
            Greening-Zibanejad-Lazar
            Condra-Pageau-Neil

            Cowen-Karlsson
            Leddy-Ceci
            Methot-Gryba
            Phillips-Boro

            Lehner
            Anderson

            =
            Playoff team for a decade

          • Jakester

Having lots of Cap space and tons of (nhl ready)prospects makes the Sens the ideal trading partner right now.

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I want to know what Chirp has heard…He has been oddly low key this weekend!

    • Sandy

Reps are in plain clothes not jerseys. We met a Pitts scout several different times in Ottawa last season, he was in a suit.

      • peetypuck

But why would a fan get all dressed up in Black Hawks gear to watch the Sens prospects practice?

        • Sandy

          I don’t know. But it’s not a scout.

          • jimmyjohnson

That’s a pretty big presumption. So is the fact that he is a scout, but stating 100% that he’s not a team rep for the Hawks because scouts wear plain clothes during the season? There’s such a huge hole in that logic, I’m not going to bother spelling it out.

      • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

And I ran into Bryan Murray in the Philadelphia airport and he was wearing a Sens jacket….whats your point? There is no reason for him to be wearing that then either.

        • Sandy

He’s a GM not a scout. He was travelling with the team.
Scouts are not going to broadcast who they are.

We also met a Minny scout at the Civic Centre when Landeskog was in Ottawa playing the 67′s. He was in plain clothes as well.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Why would he not advertise who he was? Do you really think that Murray/probably Maclean, and our scouts wouldn’t know who he was already in plain clothes?

I know just because I am out of where I work I still recognize the people I work with…

          • Sandy

They probably know who scouts are for other teams.

            But the fans don’t.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

So?! Who cares if the fans know or realize that someone from another team is there…it would actually be kind of nuts to assume that other teams didn’t have scouts there.

          • Sandy

The ones I have seen in way of scouts were in plain clothes.
The one from Pitts had an NHL pass, the guy at the Civic Centre told us because we asked him.
I’m just going by the ones I saw and what they were wearing.

          • jimmyjohnson

I see what you’re saying, but that is 100% different. Scouts scouting during the CHL regular season want to draw as little attention as possible. If it’s possible to watch a game without being seen or recognized, they will do that. Same goes for NHL games.
Being at our dev camp, though… that’s just incredibly transparent.

  • Jakester

Well Sharp and Leddy for Greening and Smith plus a prospect and a first (or pick or picks or another prospect)would save Chicago 4 million on the Cap(and they are at 70 million as we speak). Chicago has to shed salary, this falls into Murray’s plan of raping teams in Cap trouble. Sens would be at 56 million with Lehner to sign. Sens could then move Neil,Condra, and one of Cowen or Wiorcioch(cuz Leddy is a left D). Sens would have a hell of a team for the 56 million imposed budget.

    Sharp-Zibby-Ryan
    MacArthur-TUrris-Chiasson
    Michalek-Legwand-Stone
    (Hoffman)or big winger-Pageau-Lazar

    Methot-Karlsson
    Leddy-Gryba
    Wiorcioch(Cowen)-Ceci
    Phillips

    Pretty awesome team.

    • zippy

I think I just drooled all over my laptop

    • Sandy

Sharp is not waiving to come to Ottawa, so forget that.

      • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Can’t help but notice…if you were in charge of everything that happened in the world absolutely nothing would ever happen

        • Sandy

So you actually think Sharp would waive to come to Ottawa? Lecavalier wouldn’t.
Just trying to be a little realistic.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

And Michalek left term and money on the table to sign here, Macarthur signed here, Legwand had other offers and signed here…

          • Sandy

Michalek has played here before and liked it. MacArthur — don’t know his reasons but I guess he wanted to play in Ottawa, just like Legwand.
I’m not going to argue with you anymore about this. But I doubt very much Sharp would waive to come to Ottawa. He probably would go to Pitts, Col, Dal, etc places he could win the Cup.

          • peetypuck

Remember the big broughhaha in Philly a few years back when Hitchcock threatened to feed Havlat his lunch? If I remember correctly, Spezza fought Sharp that night.

          • Jakester

Hitchcock giving a meal away makes no sense! Lol

          • peetypuck

You’re right.LOL Hitchcock is too greedy to give away his own meal. He actually said that he would feed Havlat his (Havlat’s) own lunch.

          • Jakester

You don’t think the above lineup is as good as Boston, or Pitts. Take a glance at their lineups heading into next year. I think Sharp could be convinced. He’s from Ontario isn’t he?

          • peetypuck

Ryan, Sharp, Turris and MacA should be counted on scoring 25 goals and up. EK65, Zibby, Chaisson (and possibly Stone) should get 20. With luck maybe Milo and Legwand get near that. That’s an awful lot of firepower.

          • Harv

Why are we projecting goal production for a guy that is not even on the team?

          • spezzerman

lecavalier has always refused to come to Canadian teams. Its not specific to ottawa

          • FistsofNeil25

Adding Sharp and Leddy to our roster would make us one of the best teams in the east. Sharp would instantly become our best forward and Leddy makes our defense so much more mobile.

I think Murray has completely bolstered our depth with Legwand and Chiasson as well as having Stone and Lazar ready to step in to the league (hopefully). We’re a top forward and a top four defenseman away from being a serious threat in the east. I think with jakesters roster above we could challenge Boston and Tampa for tops in the conference.

I think Sharp could see a lot of opportunity here with the moves we’ve made.

      • Jakester

        Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    • peetypuck

For our 4th line I prefer Peumpel – Lazar – Neil.

      • Jakester

Le choix du chef! The chef’s choice, if that’s our biggest worry we’re going to be damn good.

        • peetypuck

Lots of firepower on the forward lines.

    • Spoons

That’s a pretty awesome lineup! No clear 1st line, but three 200 feet 2nd lines. If MacClean can coach such this brand of hockey (of which I have no doubt) then this team would be a very frustrating team to play against. Especially for the one-dimensional higher talent teams.

      • Spoons

… of which Lyndon would be Captain of course.

        • Jakester

          Oh but of course!

    • Captain Karl

we don’t want to trade any picks in next years draft and especially not a first. I say a big No to this deal.

  • Nikola Todorić

The fact the Chrip hasn’t confirmed these CHI rumours, to me, means it’s all hearsay.

    • Spoons

So is the whole ”Lyndon Slewidge for Captain” campaign. Doesn’t stop us from having fun with it ;)

    • jimmyjohnson

There’s not one rumour that has come true in years, from anywhere.

      • Spoons

I beg to differ; Rob Ford DID end up smoking crack

      • Nikola Todorić

        Kovalev
        Gonchar
        Legwand
        Hemsky

        All rumors that came through

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Hemsky had been a rumor for about four years…that hardly qualifies

          • Nikola Todorić

Sure. Hardly an argument though. If he hasn’t heard about it then it’s hearsay. A Senschirp confirmed rumor is the only one I’m going to go with here.

Every rumor brought up is usually shot down by the budget immediately.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

OH for sure, by no means am I saying there is an immediate trade with Chicago…just said what I saw at the scrimmage.

          • Spoons

Jesus H. Christ, we can’t even have fun speculating without the ”rumour police” moderating the chat room. What else are we to do (Sens related) in the dog days of Summer?

          • jimmyjohnson

Exactly, I’m happy to speculate on rumours. I just refuse the idea that some are more likely to come true. I’ll admit that I think the Senschirp rumours are legit in the sense that he doesn’t get them from stuff his kid mumbles, but I seriously doubt that anything we hear now isn’t exactly what the org wants us to.

          • jimmyjohnson

            ?
Since the Heatley leak, nothing has come out of that organization. Not one.

          • SensChirp

Have had a few things on here but nothing like the early days. They definitely tightened up. Since then I’ve had to sort of change my approach and be a little less direct in my language. There’s still good stuff in there but you need to do a little decoding sometimes.

          • jimmyjohnson

I should make it clear that I’m not criticizing the site. It’s the best Sens Blog out there. The rumours are what they are…
I don’t have an issue with the idea that rumours you speculate on and try to piece together are more legitimate. I tend to put more faith in your sources than in those of any other Sens “insider”.

          • peetypuck

I think there is a three year time-limit on rumours. The Hemsky rumour went void a year ago.

        • jimmyjohnson

          Hemsky? lol
          Gonchar? nope.
Kovalev was rumoured for like 20 minutes before it happened.
          Legwand was reported everywhere.
Regardless, that’s a pretty pathetic list, considering the amount of other moves that have taken place and that not one of them was a trade (and a trade is what we’re discussing).

          • Conor_smythe

            bobby ryan
            kyle turris
            nikita filitov

          • jimmyjohnson

Bobby Ryan was less than an hour ahead.
            Kyle Turris is a lie.
Nikita Filatov was never rumoured until day 2 of the draft.
Mike Fisher was the most obvious trade call ever.
Thanks for your input. I think HB is calling you.

          • Conor_smythe

bobby ryan was rumoured one full calendar year ahead of time
Kyle turris was rumoured about a month in advance
Filitov and Fisher – a rumour is a rumour.. and these two were called a mile away

            what is HB?

    • SensChirp

Where do the rumours come from? Is this still from the Hockeybuzz article? His latest suggests that the addition of Legwand may mean the deal is dead.

  • sprucesens

personally i just don’t see a reason to add sharp. Not that he’s a bad player, and could mentor the young guys, but unless we are giving up something like one of our extra D and a C level prospect, it doesn’t make much sense. They need to make cap space, and we certainly aren’t going to pay top dollar to help them out. No need to send top picks that will be worth more to us. If it was sharp for greening and a prospect, that should be about enough. Its not a good return for them, but it should be our top offer. The only way we should offer more, is if we have something else lined up for a younger winger who is gonna be a senator for a long time. I guess it depends on how bad they want sharp gone. I personally don’t see it

    • Captain Karl

Totally agree. Let these teams that are over the cap come to us and we can play hardball. We are not in need of making any big moves but if a team offers us a deal we can’t refuse we can take it. Definately we don’t want to give up any draft picks for next years draft. If anything we should be accumulating them.

      • spgottawa

We are not the only team well under the cap. If there is an opportunity to improve the team without mortgaging the future then BM needs to do it – that’s his job. I recall him saying last year that the Sens had a lot of prospects that he believed would play in the NHL – but not all would play for Ottawa. There are not unlimited positions available on the Sens.

Take a look at our lineup today for example and see how there could be room for Puempel, Prince, and/or Wikstrand if they developed into being “NHL ready” this season, not to mention Lazar…. And then there is Paul, and Guptil, and Englund, etc.

in some cases the Sens will want to make room for some of these guys instead of stockpiling more draft picks and prospects. I agree that it looks like 1st and 2nd round picks in 2015 are worth holding on to but at some point if you can package picks and prospects for elite level talent then you have to do that…

    • jimmyjohnson

HOW has this received 5 plus-1′s?
      WOW.
Sharp put up 78 points last year, won a Gold medal on possibly the best team in history, and was one overtime game 7 away from going back-to-back as a member of the Western Conference Champs.
Your offer for him is Greening and (a C level) prospect.

And this actually makes sense to people…
      ?
      k.
See you in the fall everybody.

  • SensChirp

“Best wishes to Bryan Murray who’s struggling with some health issues.”

    http://www.torontosun.com/2014/07/05/young-canadians-still-need-to-elevate-their-tennis-games

    • spgottawa

Not much to go on there…. Any other news/ corroboration?

      • SensChirp

No other specifics, no. But a couple media types mentioned that he didn’t look great at the Draft in Philadelphia.

        • EK65

I can’t stand Simmons. He’s such a joke. How does he just slide that in there after talking about the Chicago Cubs too?

          • FistsofNeil25

            Another hack sun media journalist.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

            Is there another kind?

The only guy who I used to like reading passed away(drawing a total blank on his name atm), but it was mostly opinion pieces and he’d target criminals who were on the lame etc… Remember he was very invested in the ardeth woods case about ten years ago r. I. P

          • CUP 2014-15

            Earl McRae RIP

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

            Yes!

        • Sandy

If he does have a serious illness will he still be GM to start the season?

      • Rafi Bomb

I have seen him at the development camp and he looks like he has lost a ton of weight and when he walks he seems to move pretty slowly and seems like he is in a bit of pain.

I don’t know what kind of health issue he is struggling with, but it does appear to be pretty evident that he has one.

      • Sandy

None that I can find. If he does have an illness, the Ottawa media is respectfully keeping it quiet — unlike the Toronto media who likes to create a lot of upheaval in Ottawa.

    • Sandy

It did appear that he lost a lot of weight from April until now.

I hope it’s nothing too serious.

    • Andrews theory

I can’t understand what keeps Murray working for this organization to be honest.

He’s financially handcuffed by an owner that repeatedly oversteps his grounds and causes a shit storm.

If he is having some health issues, retire Bryan… It’s just a job and you’ll be fondly remembered in Ottawa as one of if not the best GM is team history.

      Get well

  • SensChirp

Looks like Tcharger really got things fired up in here last night. I’ll ask if anybody else noticed a Chicago scout in attendance.

    • zippy

If I recall correctly he said there was someone wearing alot of CHI swag.

      Odd att a Sens event.

      • A-Train

Kind of odd for a scout too no?

        • zippy

I have no idea. I guess if they don’t want anyone to know who they are.

        • Deadly

Not really what you would expect.
While we have ,give us the details on Gretzky problems that you alluded to.

          • A-Train

            Nothing that isn’t well known.

Someone on here mentioned bringing Gretzky into the organization would inject some credibility and stability to the front office.

Wayne Gretzky was unsuccessful has a head coach in Phoenix. His ownership stake in the team ended in an ugly dispute with the NHL, which was eventually forced to pay him a settlement — he is only just now beginning to re-associate with the league. His wife and Rick Tocchet were wrapped up in an illegal betting ring (though she and Wayne mostly escaped legally). Then there are the TMZ-style antics of his daughter over the years.

Many of these things aren’t directly his fault or even fair. But if we’re looking to dial down the drama and up the credibility of the Ottawa Senators, Gretzky might not be the most obvious choice.

          • Deadly

Right, all well publicized but not if it was you or me. Also Seattle would be a different opportunity.
Don’t think too many individuals or companies that would see the Ottawa opportunity as a great investment.

          • A-Train

I have no doubt a new franchise ownership group in Seattle (or any city) would beg Gretzky to be involved. Great publicity etc. The NHL would also embrace it with open arms, at least publicly — behind closed doors you can bet things are more complicated between the league and the Great One.

Ottawa seems very far-fetched for a number of reasons. And as I pointed out, his involvement might not necessarily be the stabilizing influence we are looking for.

        • CUP 2014-15

Missed most of this convo. but I have had seasons for over ten years in the 200′s Zamboni end. Lots of scouts in that section. I have seen many with team jackets and in a few cases have seen golf shirts but that’s it. Never a sweater or ball cap. That’s all I’ve got.

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I don’t know for sure if he was a scout, or just a fan of the blackhawks, who happened to be watching the Sens scrimmage.. I mean maybe he just missed hockey.

Basically the guy was sitting in the middle of the stands on the season ticket side was wearing a relatively discrete Chicago hat and black pants with a small Chicago emblem and a similar jacket. The only reason I even noticed is because as soon as the first period ended he was making small talk with my son.

      • CUP 2014-15

Minus the cap, sounds like the clothing of choice for many scouts I have seen over the years. Generally dress pants with shirt or golf shirt, team jacket and making notes. They also seem to watch the game from higher up in the stands.

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I’d say he was about 2/3 if the way up, and basically right in the middle of the crowd on the fuller side.

        • http://www.Merchaholic.ca Merchaholic

I wonder who Chicago would want.. and LOL at #TheFansFault hashtag. Spezza (assuming this is the situation it’s about) has clearly said in multiple interviews that he wants to win and Ottawa isn’t the place to do that. So it will be the fans fault for all our players eventually running for the cup.

      • Sandy

I thought he had a jersey on?

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Never said he had a jersey

          • Sandy

I thought someone did and that’s what you referred to.
            My bad.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

No worries. It very well could have been nothing. I just found it odd that someone that was bare minimum a hawks fan was at the scrimmage

          • jimmyjohnson

I’d be willing to bet that less than 5 people in Ottawa own the type of Hawks gear you’re describing. I would add to that bet that likely none of them were attending the Sens prospect camp.
If what you say about this guy’s attire is true, there’s definitely something to the rumour that CHI and OTT are about to consummate a deal.

        • jimmyjohnson

All of your “he’s not a scout” talk was based on the belief that he had a jersey on?
Why would anyone think a guy with a jersey on is a scout?
          /wtf

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I’m kind flabergasted by that too… Obviously some guy in a jersey isn’t a scout.

          • jimmyjohnson

Sounds like something a member of President Kumacho’s staff would do if they were a scout

      • Spoons

Scouts don’t wear their team’s logo. They’re more discreet

        • Deadly

Like Lyndon, they don’t want to be noticed.

  • WaitingSince92

The way Murray described that trade, like it was ready to go, just waiting on a small detail, I decided not to subdue my excitement. I should have. Wonder if it’s still in the works or if the deal fell through.

    • spgottawa

Quite possible it’s just much less of a priority with the Legwand signing. It gives BM the opportunity to be patient and get the right deal – much more patient than we are…

  • SensFanInMTL

Has anyone been able to attend the development camp during these last few days? Been reading a lot of the posters from HFBoards of people attending and observing. Puempel & Lazar have been trio’d up in 3 on 3. Lot of mixed reactions with Puempel. Many saying he’s leaning towards bust territory but hoping not. Many say he’s in his 3rd year of camp and doesn’t have anything to prove in these 3 on 3 scrimmages. Of course as fans, everyone’s expecting a little more only because he & Prince are the veterans in this development camp lol. Don’t know how many spots are left in the upcoming season. Maybe someone (Greening, Condra) is on their way out. Come on August arrive sooner!

    • Sandy

We can all speculate how long it is before Claesson vies for a spot in Ottawa. He is the best D in Binghamton right now.

Who does he replace when he comes to Ottawa?

      • Rafi Bomb

Claesson still has a while to go. We have too many left handed d men for him to get serious consideration and he isn’t really all that better than any of them at this point.

        • SensFanInMTL

Thanks for all these bud! Appreciate it!

Wish I still had me car to make the drive. :(

      • Sensnation

Personally I think his development curve will coincide with Phillips’ end. Then he can seamlessly slide in with Ceci if he’s ready.

    • Rafi Bomb

I have seen pretty much every practice thus far. Puempel looked pretty invisible in the scrimmage so it appears as he has farther away from making the team than initially expected. With that said, having watched nearly all the practices, I can tell you that Puempel has an incredible set of hands on him; he is a great sniper. Overall there is a pretty big disparity in skill among the prospects attending this camp and I would include Puempel among the elite group of Stone, Lazar, Ceci and Paul.

Another thing worth noting is that Puempel had a pretty big hit at the end of the scrimmage, so he does have a physical element to his game. The main thing about Puempel is that if he isn’t scoring goals, he isn’t going to “wow” you with his skills; he will look like a decent player but won’t stand out. But when you see the calibre of goals he can score that is when you start to take notice. I think anyone who is claiming that Puempel is in “bust” territory is out to lunch. He may take a while longer but any player who can lay some big hits and score the types of goals he can, while having decent size and skating ability looks to be well on his way to at the very least become a serviceable NHL player at some point.

No way can we trading Weircioch for Subban, he’d be really good if it wasn’t for PMac…

      • Zelle

I am probably in the minority but I dont believe pw is in pmacs doghouse as much as he wanted Cowen to play through his difficulties and grow or he wanted to give Cowen a full season to see what would come of it. Maclean is a long term guy and he will inflict short term pain for long term benefits.

    • HABS fan – coming in peace

For those who don’t know the situation…

Michel Therrien used to work for the French station RDS after he got
fired from Pittsburgh. He made it clear during that time that PK Subban
was the kind of player he was not fond of. He really did not like PK’s
attitude, and he didn’t think he was a good fit in the long term.

Then he got hired as the new coach of the Canadiens. I can’t see him
changing his idea overnight. He probably still has issues with PK, even
though I guess he must have matured a bit, but you can still see PK has
      attitude problems.

PK probably doesn’t want out, and Canadiens probably don’t want to get
rid of him either, but the fit isn’t good with Therrien-PK.

MTL would be stupid not to take it!

    • Conor_smythe

I thought MTL cant trade him after he files for arbitration

they would need to sign him before arbitration ends and then trade him. or, wait the process out and if he wins, wait a year and then trade him

    • Keregan

Well Mtl have 15 mil of cap space but still need to sign Eller rfa and Subban so depending on how both player will command they migth be tight on budget. Looking foward to how they will deal with this:)

  • AutoTurris

A trade between the Sens and the Hawks involving Greening, Gryba and Hossa would cut the cap surplus in CHI to $841795. As well, Hossa doesn’t have a NMC so would be the most likely candidate for a trade actually coming to fruition. I still think that if Murray is going to do anything it will be adding Stewart, but if CHI is desperate this is the move I think they will make

    • Sandy

Would absolutely love Hossa, but he’s now 35 yrs old and I don’t know if Murray would go for that.
The one issue Chicago will have with that contract is the cap recapture if Hossa retires before the contract is finished when Hossa will be 41 yrs old.
He’s paid 7.9M for the next two seasons and the money goes down drastically after that.

      • senate19

With all due respect, and I could be wrong – point wise -, but for his age, Hossa is above his peers. He’s still got it, and if he would come back to Ottawa I’d gladly take him.

    • Keregan

Hossa contract is something hard to swallow

    • not YOUR wingman

      Stewart = SHUDDER

    • Wyzerd

I can’t see BM giving up prospects for short-term gain. Hossa is old and is often injured. If a trade is going to happen, it should be for a Dman. The only way I can see taking Hossa/Cap is if we get a good defenseman in return…

  • Brock

Had a dream we traded for Evander Kane last night. What a wonderful dream it was.

    • Sandy

That’s what I’m thinking the trade is.
‘Rumours’ are the Jets want to trade him. What would it cost in addition to Stone who the Jets would ask for.

      • peetypuck

I’m thinking this is a buyers market right now. Philly, Chicago and Boston are forced to make trades to become cap compliant. So far teams are waiting to get a steal of a deal. This may affect other teams forcing them to trade a player for much less. If Murray is patient he might get Kane for a discount.

      • ProfessorPower

I would not trade Stone for Kane.. Stone has great character and knows the system. Will be a future 30 goal guy himself. Counter productive if that’s why the want. I think Prince Puempel or Hoffman could entice them in a package since they are all ready now/next year left wings who can play top 6.

        • Harv

Any deal that includes Stone is a non-starter. I agree that he will be a big part of the Sen’s future.

          • ProfessorPower

I would put him in the untouchable section. He shows up in every big game and that’s exactly what the organization is looking for. WJC, every NHL call up, Binghamton playoffs, development camp scrimmage. Plays the best when pressure is on, a guy who will help us win a cup. Lazar Ceci Stone should not be considered in any trade.

    • A-Train

Been thinking a lot about Kane too. Have dreams of him playing on a line with Zibanejad and Chiasson.

That said…with all Murray’s emphasis on “character guys” and “good people” I wonder if he’d hesitate before making the deal. And honestly, Kane’s issues in the ‘Peg will be the same as Ottawa. Similar market, similar reaction to a guy like that.

      Or not…just musing.

      • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I think the old white guys club needs to be addressed, as more and more people from different backgrounds are getting into the sport of hockey(It has been almost exclusively a white sport for years) you are going to find more and more eccentric and a bit more in your face personalities….If the league is going to continue to grow it is going to have to find a way to embrace that….or at the very least accept it.

        • Zelle

I dont mind in your face. In fact I like Simmonds because of that. But I dont like mefirst drama being associated with the team. It’s why I dont want Subban.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

My statement is actually kind of funny rereading it, because I used to be a fairly big Basketball fan as well…until it became more of a who has more of the individual stars who can essentially beat the other team by themselves as apposed to a team effort.

        • A-Train

Kane’s problems in Winnipeg seem to have more to do with the city, fans and media than with his play or attitude in the locker room. It’s just a smaller, more conservative city and an outsize personality invites that much more scrutiny and, eventually, criticism. Ottawa is the same.

By contrast, look at Patrick Kane. All kinds of shenanigans off the ice early in his career…but you never heard about the Chicago media and fans piling on him.

Race probably plays into all this, but I don’t think it’s the major factor.

    • Zelle

I was high on Kane until I heard about his attitude issues. Ottawa is now a very young team and as we saw last season they can easily get down on themselves. The last thing they need is drama in the locker room. We need either more young aspiring players or stable, strong presence veterans that have been there and done that and can stay the course positively.

      • Cicero

I agree with you 100%. Drama on or off the ice is not in the best interest of a team trying to consolidate leadership, and in a town where the fanbase is…well, how about ‘a little frayed at the edges’?

    • not YOUR wingman

      a NIGHTMARE to me

      not gonna happen anyway

NY / Brooklyn / Washington / Philly will all offer better packages for him If he is on the market

      • jimmyjohnson

Brooklyn should just give them Dal Colle. Fair trade, both teams get what they need, and Kane’s attitude isn’t going to be an issue there.

    • WaitingSince92

Somehow, I don’t think the guy who pretends his stack of $100s is a cellphone will sign in Ottawa… Probably looking to cash in as much as possible.

  • Cicero

This report [http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2105315-will-the-salary-cap-force-the-boston-bruins-to-part-with-johnny-boychuk] states that Boychuk leaving is not a matter of ‘if’ — but ‘where’.

I see him as a Top 4 D in PMac’s system, arguably the one we need. He’s a veteran with Stanley Cup experience, but not over-the-hill at 30.

With top pairing being Methot-Karlsson, Boychuk would play RHD alongside Cowen or Wiercioch, providing a stable, veteran anchor for the young D.

    • Sandy

Considering the cap room that Boston needs, it will probably be a pick and a prospect going to Boston from any team that deals with them.

      • AutoTurris

        Dallas 2nd and Prince

        • Spoons

He only has 1 year left on his contract. So make that a conditional pick if he extends in Ottawa.

          • AutoTurris

Would we want him after a year though? Our young guys should be ready to go by then

          • Spoons

            good point!

          • jimmyjohnson

yeah, so let’s just give away two long term assets in a year where we aren’t a Cup contender for an asset that won’t make us a Cup contender that will be redundant in about a years time.
            Great plan.

          • AutoTurris

I’m not sure why you’re coming after me all full of piss and vinegar but let’s try and sort this out in a civil manner before we become another Senschirp brawl. 1) I was suggesting that package for a trade. Suggesting. 2) Prince wants out so I’m not sure how he is considered a long term asset, and the pick, well anything can happen with a pick but if we were to give one away, I would hedge my bets that it would be the Dallas 2nd we use, not our own. That’s why I included it

          • jimmyjohnson

Until Prince is traded, that trade request of his is a) speculation, and b) irrelevant. Plenty of players request out and then go on to play for a long time with that org.

Regardless, none of what you wrote justifies the idea of going after Boychuk. It sounds nice, it solves our problems in the short term, but it just adds to the potential calamitous July 1 that’s approaching fast. We don’t need more players walking away next season.

          • Cicero

It would be nice to actually be in a position to have that choice!

        • SENSible Voice

I don’t think the cost would be that high. Not many teams can still add 3.67M without sending anything the other way which is what BOS would prefer. Also, Boychuk has one year left on his contract. Is he a rental or a long term acquisition? A rental will return even less. Any team looking long term would probably want to shed some cap to make room for him which goes against what BOS wants.

    • AutoTurris

I’d be more than happy to have him on board, only thing is; we’d have 9 NHL D. We would certainly lose PW as a result. Ah, the Phillips contract comes to help us out again

      • Cicero

We’re forced to move LHD regardless of who we pick up, but I think that might be one part of the trade-in-the-works that Murray is working on for another top forward.

    • Wyzerd

      Perfect!!

    • jimmyjohnson

Does nobody consider the context of these trade proposals?
Boston isn’t trading him in division.

      • SENSible Voice

I’m sure we wouldn’t be BOS’ first choice as trading partner but it may very well come down to us being the only team willing to take on cap without expecting salary to go the other way which is what the ideal trade BOS would want.

        • not YOUR wingman

Edmonton – Calgary – Phoenix – Colorado are my guesses

      • Cicero

There’s precedent to not rule it out entirely — the Kessel trade to Tronto, for example, and the Chris Kelly trade with the Sens.

        • jimmyjohnson

The Kessel trade was an offer sheet in trade format and everyone knew Boston wasn’t looking at Kessel longterm.
The Kelly trade was a deadline deal entering a rebuild.
As if Boston is going to actively make a direct competitor better by trading Boychuk here.

    • SENSible Voice

Why does no one put Ceci on that 2nd pairing? I honestly think he is our 3rd best D. I’d put Boychuk on the 2nd pairing along side Ceci. Then pair Cowen and PW if they are still on the roster come October.

      • Cicero

For sure, except CC is a RH D, same as Boychuk.

    • FistsofNeil25

Boychuk will be too expensive to re-sign next summer. I like the player but adding him doesn’t make sense for a number of reasons. If Orpik got 5.5M this summer Boychuk will easily get 6M next year.

      • whammer44

Even at one year for $3M I would take him if it didn’t cost too much. It would buy the team a bit more time to see what we have with the “kids” back there.

      • Cicero

You’re probably right, but maybe not if he wants to play here and is willing to take less than $5.5M

I was thinking about peetypucks question last night about Boston needing a trade to stay under the cap and the first name I thought of was Boychuk. Now I see an article stating something similar. Someone needs to step in and stop me from getting too excited here lol

    • whammer44

I had suggested looking at Boychuk and Marchand a couple of articles ago because of the cap issues Boston has.
Boychuk is in the last year of his contract so he could be had at less than his real value…and at $3M he is a bargain.

      • Zelle

So agreed! On Boychuk anyway. Man do I hate Marchand.

        • Deadly

Often hating opposition players means wanting them on your team.

      • sprucesens

would love boychuk, but i bet a team in the west ends up the team to beat, if they are considering moving him. I bet edmonton tries to get him and kelly for prospects and picks. They need a C and D. Edmonton 2nd pick and a prospect might land them both

      • Deadly

You can look at them all you want, adding them to your lineup will cost you our future. Ie. Lazar,Stone plus..plus

          1) Boston was never looking at Kessel long term
          2) Burke was very aggressive in his negotiations
          3) They overpaid to get him
          4) Toronto wasn’t a good team and couldn’t have been considered a contender
          5) Kessel’s damage done to other team’s is in the regular season. Boychuk is clutch in the playoffs.
          6) Boston looks at the division this year and I’m sure they see Ottawa as a dangerous team. They aren’t going to make that worse for themselves.
          7) Divisional playoffs. 2 rounds in division now.

          • sprucesens

“kessel’s damage done to other team’s is in the regular season” HAHA, of course it is! He’s played 7 playoff games with the leafs! Not disagreeing or anything, just taking a shot at the leafs

      • Zelle

        …damn it you’re totally right.

  • silver seven

Just my two cents, but I honestly don’t think we need a kane or sharp deal. The way I see it we have two big young forwards with a ton of potential in stone and chaisson who need the ice time to develop instead of adding an expensive, and in kane’s case, bad attitude forward. These deals strike me as being better suited if there is something available at the trade deadline if it actually looks like the playoffs are in sight. Not trying to be a killjoy here but to me adding another D makes way more sense if there is to be another deal this summer. If you look at the cup champs they had two players in Pearson and Toffoli (sp?)who played huge parts in there success paired up with jeff carter. I know legwand is no carter, but throw him in between those two and look out.

    • Harv

Well, I like your two cents worth. I am glad a lot of the folks here are not the GM. I think the current line up with Legwand looks like it has possibilities and one more year for the young guys will let us see what we have. Don’t understand flipping Chaisson. Isn’t he a big power forward and isn’t that what we need? So, we trade for what we need and we flip what we need for another old guy?

      • HamadBo$$

Chiasson is slow and is an ineffective 2nd liner…will probably play on the third line with 30 points… thats what dallas fans were saying at hf boards.

Many even said guptill was the main part of the trade.

But I hope Chiasson does turn out to be a 50 point player

        • Deadly

More fan opinions, from Dallas to boot.

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Guptill was the guy I was most excited about… After seeing Paul’s release and hands he is no slouch either.

          • HamadBo$$

Paul has been invited to the wjc camp for a reason ;)
Even Jim Nill stated that Paul was the guy he didn’t want to give up but Murray insisted. Apparently he is a good two way centre with an excellent release so probably a high end 3rd line centre behind turris and zibby

        • Sandy

He’s 23 yrs old BTW. He just came off his first NHL season.
I’ll reserve judgement to see how he does later in the year as he will have to adjust to new teammates, coaching staff and a new system.

          • HamadBo$$

eaves was 21 when he scored 20 goals as a rookie…and after that everything went downhill

          • Sandy

We don’t know what Chiasson can do. Let’s give him some time.

        • silver seven

I dunno man, I saw him play more than a few times and he looked pretty good, big body, drives to the net, scraps when he has to, Dallas fans are just consoling themselves after what they gave up, while we do the same over spezza. Different kettle of fish I know, but still, as the hockey fan world turns.

        • laffin681021

Slow and ineffective? Guess you know everything about him through hfboards right? Have you even watched this kid play for more then a few games? How about you give him a shot before you try to bash him. Also last year was his first season. There’s not too many players that can contribute night in and night out their first year. Enough with the negativity…especially when you have no idea what the player is all about.

          • Magnus Nor

I think he will suprise us in a good way!

          • HamadBo$$

True, I was just stating what dallas fans were saying

          • laffin681021

A lot of fans say negative things so they can feel better about losing a good player.

Quite the difference in Bryan Murray in 2 mos.

    • Cicero

Weight loss and fatigue. But he’s probably doing better than I ever would under all that pressure. Let’s send him some positive fan vibes :)

  • sprucesens

any bets on hoffman’s production this year if he stays on the team? my bet is 42 points. 16 goals 26 assists. I think he’ll have a great year if he has good linemates, and his speed will give other team’s fits

    • Deadly

I fear he will not make the grade. Hoping I am wrong and you are underestimating his production.

    • Spoons

I’m not as optimistic as others about some of our prospects. Hoffman, Stone, Pageau, Puempel and Prince are all players I unfortunately don’t see having long careers in the NHL. I hope I’m wrong of course, but I just on’t see any one of them amounting to anything significant other than short term bottom 6 players.

      • sprucesens

just curious as to why? most of our prospects had us at the top of the nhl for quality of top potential. Yes we traded lots away, but they still project to be good. I doubt any turn into 1st liners, except maybe puempel. Some of our talent has to turn into good players. Every team has them, when they give them a chance. Not everyone has to be in the top 10 in their draft to be great talents

        • Spoons

Not saying we don’t have good prospects. Lazar, Ceci will be good, but also high draft picks as you mentioned. Boro and Claesson are some of the more obscure players I see making it to the top, but there just isn’t any room right now on D.

          • jimmyjohnson

It sounds to me like you just don’t know how to judge mid-level talent.

      • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Have you had a chance to get out and see Stone play? I have been one of his biggest doubters until this year’s prospect camp.

I don’t think he’ll be an elite top line player, but I think he has potential to be a very good second liner, now Given playing against prospects is one thing.. I’m not about to appoint him the second coming of Alfie until at least he has demonstrated he can continuously pull it off in the big leagues (yes the second coming part is kinda a joke based on the fact they were both drafted late)

        • Deadly

Not counting the injuries,Stone has looked good, and improved with every chance he has had so far. Last year he looked especially good to end the year.

      • Deadly

I guess you have a lesser opinion of our scouting staff also.

  • zippy

So do you think Ryan would sign without another big trade?

(Where Ryan and Stone are our 1-2 kick on RW).

    • ProfessorPower

      If out top 6 was:

      MacArthur-Turris-Ryan
      E.Kane-Zibanejad-Stone

We would be set forever lol

      • Deadly

Kane seems like a perfect fit for us. Team guy,low profile, hard working.
Personally I would rather pass thanks.

        • MisterUtterbag

          Sarcasm warning?

        • ProfessorPower

I don’t care what the hell he does off the ice as long as he’s scoring goals. Him and Zbad Would be a tough duo to beat.

          • Deadly

I do care about the character of our players and I am hoping it is a core part of the Sens brand.I believe it is according to Murray’s recent statements.
Maybe Sean Avery could make a comeback.

          • ProfessorPower

We need competitive people, Kane is a competitive person. If we surround him with character guys and a coach that can bring the best out of him he can become a 40 goal guy. I don’t think he has the best character either, but I think we have the staff and team to enhance it. Putting avery in the conversation demonstrates your incompetence, Kane is not nearly that bad. Shy away from mean tweets if you want, Kane would be a great addition.

          • MisterUtterbag

Long and short if he’s an ass I would rather not.

The bad attitude will tear the team apart from the inside.

If he’s open to a new beginning and wants to play here then fine

          • ProfessorPower

I don’t know him personally, and if management truly feels the guy will be that horrible in the dressing room then sure..don’t trade for him. I think Maclean can work wonders with him, but I could easily be wrong.

          • Deadly

Think the last time we took a chance on a situation that was somewhat similar was with Heatley .It was shortly after his tragic accident that he ended up with us. He was great for us until things weren’t going his way and. Then it went off the rails taking the team with him.
Sometimes you can read a book by its cover.
I think we are headed in a good direction and Murray will avoid as much stress as he can. There is a lot of youth in the room and if we need anything it might be more veteran presence .

          • sprucesens

yeah, if you ignore twitter and facebook, which i do anyways, then there isn’t a big problem with kane. Every problem related to him has been stupid stuff done on the internet. Pictures, tweets and so on. The guy competes and is what, 22? I did stupid stuff when i was that age too. He’ll grow past it, and be a first line winger for a long time. If they are selling somewhat low now on a 30 goal scoring winger, because he’s had a few offensive tweets, now is the time to buy buy buy

          • Deadly

If Kane comes he will be surrounded by a lot of youth on our team as we have a very young team. Will he lead them or will they lead him? Our coach is still a head coaching rookie,we are thin on veteran leadership so I think Murray will not make the move.
Everyone seemed to think our assistant coaches were not the best last year but you think our staff can change and improve his behaviour .

    • Deadly

Yes,I think he will sign without a problem. The reality in the NHL is that winning is so difficult that no one can really predict who will win the cup.Playing good minutes, with good line mates in a good city matters.

  • sens_bud

    Mac – Turris – Ryan
    VOID – Zibby – Stone
    MM9 – Legwand – Chiassion
    Greening – Smith – Neil/Condra

This is how i see our forward group as of today. Defense is a whole other story.

If the rumored pending trade falls through, Hoffman and MM9 will compete for the 2nd/3rd jobs, or maybe Puempel pushes for Hoffmans spot since he’s on a two-way.

We all know that PMac will be throwing the lines around but maybe it will kept to a minimum and perhaps just alternating playing time, ie giving Zibbys line 3rd line minutes and Legwands group 2nd line minutes depending on success. Hopefully the fourth line stays as the fourth line. It also might take a little rotating of those middle 6 players to find chemistry since there is for sure 2 new guys maybe one more.

Short term I’m looking forward to this rumored trade and who might be coming in to join the group. Longer term, it will be interesting to see the contract extensions that BM needs to address. Above all I can say I look forward to see what this group can do come the fall and I can definitely get behind this young but talented group.

    • Deadly

Hoffman should get a long look because if we send him down we will lose him on waivers.

      • sens_bud

Forgot about that. Then I guess if we have a LW coming in on a trade I assume greening or Hoffman is going the other way. If its a right wing my guess would be Stone going the other way. I would really like to see how Stone turns out in a sens uniform though.

  • Sharmarke

I’m really confused about Hoffmann. Why wasnt he given a one way? Why isnt he a full time nhler now? I really cant see a weakness in his game. He can play with the top line and look natural. I dont think his defense is bad. The coach puts him on the first pp. He has skill. So someone tell me what is about him that people dont have him in our lineup going into next season but everyone automatically pencils in stone.

    • spgottawa

3G in 25 games. Yes, pencil him in on the first line!
Seriously, neither Hoffman nor Stone (4G in 19 games) have really proved they are full time NHLers. However Stone did look pretty good playing on the wing with Turris and MacArthur at the end of last year which is why almost everyone has him pencilled in higher on the depth chart.
Given the departure of Spezza I think the likely first line is MacArthur-Turris-Ryan so Stone is going to have to prove himself playing with some other linemates.

      • ill district

I think Hoff is ready for 3rd line duties and some time on the PP. He has tremendous speed, and has had some good looks on the PP. Give him a shot.

    • Dirk-Diggler

He’s not waiver eligible so the two way part means that if he has a bust out of the start of camp they can send him to the AHL and pay him his minor salary but a team can pick him up while he’s being sent down if they want to claim him.

I don’t think it’s a big deal and I’d like to see him play on the 3rd line with Legwand and Stone

    • Deadly

Pretty sure he has a one way contract. The point is ,if we send him down,he will be selected. I think Brian has given that contract in order that he gets a chance to fulfil his goal,if not with us,then somewhere else.
He has been a late bloomer in all the leagues he has played in and has not yet proven himself to be the scorer he needs to be in the NHL. He is not a gritty player,so needs to be near top 6, needs to score to be there.
Now or never ( with us)

    • Wyzerd

Lots of players on one way contracts right now. Need the flexibility to move players down.

      • Pasky

Technically we have Zibanejad, Chiasson, Stone, Hoffman, Pageau and Ceci on 2-way contracts which isn’t bad. The bad part is we don’t want to send any of those players down, asides from maybe Pageau.

      • Deadly

No flexibility with Hoffman unless he clears waivers which is doubtful.

  • my2sens

Awfully quiet in here… is Chirp making another table on his cell phone again?

    • SensChirp

Ha. Just nothing new over the weekend. This mystery deal is being well-guarded, it seems.

      • my2sens

Do you truly believe something else is going to happen? I think we need to shed a D and one forward…

Could you see a 3 way deal happening involving Anderson as well and bringing up someone to back up Lehner?

        • SensChirp

          Definitely another deal coming.

          • my2sens

Alright. Good to hear we aren’t done. I feel with an additional piece we can be a surprise in this upcoming season.

          • spezzerman

likely before the staff take their summer cottage leave?

        • Pasky

I don’t see an Anderson deal right now. I think they keep him until minimum to Trade Deadline, maybe until the end of season. Goalies just don’t have much trade value unless your in the Top 10 in the league, which Anderson is not. It wouldn’t surprise me if we get in a playoff spot, the team lets him walk at the end of free agency so that they can sign their own back up for Lehner.

          • my2sens

Good point. I don’t have anything against Andy, would just be nice to see The Viking take over!

      • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I’m fairly convinced that it is something big and a three way… Or at least a trade with am immediate follow up deal.

  • Pasky

Well today is the last day of the development camp. Hopefully this gave BM a chance to view where he sees his prospects playing next year. I think one thing for sure is that Stone almost locked himself a spot in the Top 9 this year. Hopefully we see a trade coming that involves Greening, and unless we talked to Methot and he has no intentions of resigning with us then Weircioch might fall victim to the numbers game.

But since they seem content to give the D a chance to bounce back next season, priority to me is trading Greening for a Top 6 LW, and then sign Ryan to an extension. I know Sharp has been rumored and I think a deal for him isn’t completely out of the question, and hopefully that’ll show Ryan a commitment to staying competitive while our young guys learn the game, and then we can challenge for the cup in a few seasons.

    • Jakester

If we get Sharp, I think the intention will be to contend for the Cup this year. The Sens lineup would be pretty formidable. Three solid lines!

      • Wyzerd

How does sharp make this team a contender for the Cup? Same team that gave up a gazillion goal last year.

        • spezzerman

wasnt that all Spezza’s fault? sarcasm

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Because it’s rumoured to be bringing us Leddy as well

          • Wyzerd

As much as I would like a Leddy, a player with just a year and half NHL experience does not make a team a cup contender. Also, I’m sure a few of our Young D would have had much better years playing for Chicago.

      • Deadly

Wow,this must be the easiest rebuild ever.
Personally I think our timing should coincide with Lazar,Stone ,Puemple,Claessen, and this core group.
Turris,Ryan,Macarther ,Chaisson , will be our veterans. So 2-4 years , add a couple of veteran players and go for it.
Too early to not let the young guys develop.
Letting the young guys play now has a 2015 draft as an option if we don’t develop as well as I think we will.

  • Zelle

I know we don’t like to talk about the Leafs and Habs here but I was wondering if other people also thought that Reimer filing for arbitration was maybe just a way of getting to UFA status?

  • Zelle

    Personally I like this:

    MacArthur – Turris – Ryan
    Michalek – Zbad – Stone
    Hoffman – Legwand – Chiasson
    Smith – Pageau – Lazar
    Condra / Neil

    ? – EK
    Methot – Gryba
    Wiercioch – Ceci
    Phillips

    Lehner
    Vokoun

If they can’t make a deal happen they can give Cowen one more year to see if that pairing will improve with both guys recovering from injury. With Legwand as a center and Chiasson on the wing the Senators have enough to put Smith on the LW and fill that gap. Now Pageau has two solid wingers. If Lazar doesn’t pan out then Condra or Neil can step in. In this scenario Greening becomes pretty expendable.

Solid scoring first line. Good potential scoring on the second and third lines with both lines having big bodies in C/RW positions and scoring and speed on LW. Fourth line just becomes a solid defensive line with more potential to score! I don’t know, I don’t find it looks too bad. Yeah OK we don’t have Toews or Crosby or whatever but the talent is dispersed through four lines.

  • Zelle

      That sucks..
