Senators Recall Pageau and Ceci

A day after demoting forward Mike Hoffman to Binghamton, the Ottawa Senators have announced they have recalled Jean Gabriel Pageau in time for tonight’s game against the Sabres.

Since the demotion of Derek Grant, the Senators have struggled a little bit with their line combinations,  Zibanejad looks like he can play a regular shift with the top six forwards but with only four centres on the roster, Zibanejad was starting most games on the team’s fourth line.  Having Pageau in the line up will give Paul MacLean a few more options when he sets his line up tonight against the Sabres.

Marc Methot missed the game day skate and apparently will not play tonight.  Down a couple guys on the blueline, the Senators have also recalled defenceman Cody Ceci.  He is expected to make his NHL debut tonight.

Game Day post coming in a little bit.

  • RUSH RLZ

We have such depth… and easily 6 guys in Bingo that we can utilize on the big squad, there is no reason at all that we can’t hammer together effective line combos. We’ll see how we line up tonight and how we use JGP this time I suppose! I smell a blowout!

  • spezzerman

Chirp, would love to see those line combos you tweeted.

  • FistsofNeil25

JGP coming up to put the team on his back lol

  • SensChirp

    MacArthur-Spezza-Ryan
    Michalek-Turris-Zibanejad
    Greening-Pageau-Condra
    Conacher-Smith-Neil

And just leave it that way!

    • FistsofNeil25

I’d swap Ryan and ZBad Chirp but the rest is as it should be. The few times we’ve had a chance to see Mac-Spezz-ZBad, they’ve been dominant.

      • Doc

Agreed, and I would shift Michalek with Pageau and have Conacher with Turris. Conacher has been playing good lately and with Turris and Ryan, his speed and grit would be well utilised.

    • RUSH RLZ

I like those top 2 lines and IMO they should have been set something like that for SOME TIME now. If anything just tinker with swapping out Z-Bad and Ryan.

Fourth line looks solid but I’m surprised we have tried JOB there yet this season…

It’s the third line if anything that should continue to see a lot of flux unless Condra and Greening start getting their shit clicking.

  • SensChirp

MacLean has ‘em like this to start

    MacArthur-Spezza-Zibanejad
    Conacher-Turris-Ryan
    Greening-Pageau-Neil
    Michalek-Smith-Condra

    • FistsofNeil25

Well at least he has line #1 right lol

      • Pasky

Swap Pageau and Smith ad I’d be pretty happy with that.

  • FBP

Has anyone in the media asked MacLean where he sees the benefit in not practicing with the actual starting game lines?

I would guess it’s his way of implementing his systems or throwing off the game plan of the opposing coaches, but the benefit of this at the cost of building chemistry seems debatable.

It’d be great to hear it straight from the Walrus’ mouth.

  • sens23

i think Stone should of been recalled as well. being a point per game player on the 3rd line while being a plus player
if he is recalled at the very least it makes guys like conacher, condra, greening, pageau earn their spots because right now there is no incentive for the bottom 6 players to play their very best night in night out because they know there is no one to replace them with kassian being the only forward in the press box and he only comes in when needed

    • runningbear1974

Yeah i was hoping for Stone too… Would be nice if he could come in and play well with Spezza… That would be great…

  • Jacques

Pageau with zibby on his right side would be a dynamite 3rd line – something we haven’t had all year. I think Pageau is going to rip it up! The kid will be busting at the seems!

  • WolfInSheepsClothes

    From other thread…

No Methot this morning. Only 5D

  • Miguel

Personally, I have loved PMac for making an underdog into a playoff team.
However it seems he is really struggling working with some stars of the league, and he is certainly not getting the best from this team right now. The question “Why” has us diehards debating each other, but I would love for PMac to explain this himself.
I have questioned his linuep all season, and that has not changed with this game.
Hate to say this but maybe he is “disrespec” ing some players on this team, as they are not giving it their all every game like they in past seasons.
A solid victory at home vs last place Buffalo would be a great start in the right direction… failing that…. i shudder the thought :)

    • spezzerman

players dont give it their all and that is on the coach??? As a fan, I dont mind this year being a transition year. As a new captain Spezza is trying to do way too much, and taking on a larger defensive responsibility on the pk which isnt an easy adjustmet; young guys playing big roles, etc.

      • Miguel

if you make the playoffs with 4 – 3-4th line players, and then and 4 stars to that lineup, and you cannot improve the team, then yes the coach has a big part in the team not performing at their best.
A coach is nothing without his best players going, and right now he cannot get his best players going… Why is the real question

        • runningbear1974

If those guys were still injured, we’d be a better “team”… Those 4 stars didn’t just bring in some stardom… They brought in a lot of weaknesses too, unpredictable behaviour… Now, he’s going through process of maximizing strengths and minimizing weaknesses…

          • spezzerman

            exactly.

        • spezzerman

Its also hard to coach goaltending back to a .940 save percentage.

          • Miguel

well said, and a fair statement :)

    • runningbear1974

I don’t know… I sympathize with the coach… At the beginning of the year, a lot of players were playing poorly… A lot… Michalek, Pageau, Condra, Greening, Cowen, Wiercioch, Gryba, even Karlsson… So, would be hard to manage team… Help each player get their game, find a system that works with them not playing well… I sympathize…. The guys are starting to play better, so now the coach can start to build a system…

      • Miguel

        fair enough

  • SensChirp

Cody Ceci up too. This will be interesting

    • spezzerman

Wow! I must say he has looked really, really good in Bingo this year in the small sample I have watched. Honestly didnt see him getting a shot this year though, especially over Claesson the way he has played. (again, small samples I have watched)

    • RUSH RLZ

Nice! Shak’er up a bit! Can’t wait to see where we slide him in!

    • runningbear1974

      wow, that’s exciting…

    • FistsofNeil25

I hope people don’t have high hopes for Ceci’s defensive game. Sure doesn’t hurt to try him out against the worst offensive team in the league though, This should be really interesting. I really needed to study tonight but now I have to watch this game lol

    • Miguel

Wow exciting yes, but who is going to clear the front of the net? or make a hit ?
How will they line them up???
      Karsson Phillips
      Corvo PW
      Gyrba Ceci
Wouldn’t you expcect Boro to come up?
Wow I am sooo Freaking confused

    • TookieIs100PercentRight

The future captain. At least the guy I’d want as captain a ways down the road.
Born here, played here, educated here, drafted here. Ottawa born and bred.
He’ll be my favourite player once he starts getting regular shifts.

    • boom

I assume this means that he will play, and Gryba won’t? I know the response from most would be “so what?”…but I would have liked to see him back in the lineup, for a few games…

      • Millennium

Methot and Cowen are out, so Ceci and Gryba are both in.

        • boom

Well, sure – if your arithmetic is better than mine…thanks…

  • Millennium

You get a callup! And you get a callup! And you get a callup! Everyone gets a callup!

  • RUSH RLZ

Cruising through player stats, daydreaming about who we could theoretically bring in to take 9MM’s spot. I notice that MacArthur is tied for 8th in points amongst left wingers. I know he’s been one of our strongest, most consistent players the past few weeks, but that is great!

  • Alcatraz

Ceci should be interesting and a perfect game for him to get his first career start in, against a Buffalo team that doesn’t generate a lot of sustained pressure
Hopefully Ceci can also get a few chances on the PP

  • WolfInSheepsClothes

    Hopefully Methot can go tonight….

    3-65
    4-5
    46-77

    • Millennium

He can’t. Flu. That’s why Ceci is up.

  • Millennium

My guess is that Maclean is using small stints up on the big team to reward top players in Bingo. They have so many guys close to making it, they need to keep them engaged and hungry for that next challenge.

    • runningbear1974

The more guys that get experience, the better the team will be…

      • Millennium

Not only that, but from the players’ perspective, it’s important to know that their hard work will be rewarded. If they think they are 5th on the callup list and there won’t be 5 callups in the next couple years, maybe they get discouraged, disgruntled, etc. If they know that strong play gives them a shot at an NHL debut, that’s hella motivation.

    • sens23

then how come no stone call up yet?
hopefully ceci will take CP4′s pp minutes tonight

    • Kohlmanator

The money for a young guy is a great reward.

  • Bob

Ok, let me see if I got this right.. They send 2 back, call up Hoffman, gets to play, what, 2 games? A few in the press box then gets sent back to only call up 44, and is on the 3rd line. Should I not be drinking water from the tap here in Kanata??

    • runningbear1974

I think Hoffman gets paid NHL dollars while he’s up here… Which would be huge compared to what he’s getting… It’s like getting a Christmas bonus… Great for the team to do this… And he got a couple of games in :)

  • FistsofNeil25

Ohhh man I’m excited for this game now. This is going to be a different looking team tonight that’s for sure.

  • FBP

    The flu again? Weird.

  • FistsofNeil25

Do we have any idea what the D pairings will be? Is Ceci going to take Methot’s spot with Karlsson?! It’s funny how we can go from having not enough offensive defensemen in the line-up to almost too many lol hopefully it pays off tonight and we don’t spend too much time in our own zone.

  • NickofTime

I don’t get this latest call up at all, Ceci is a right shot & the Sens are down two left shot defencemen. Boro should have been the call up since he is a left shot & played well up here. Now they will have Karlsson, Corvo, Gryba & Ceci all right shots. Earlier this yr they had too many left shots on the roster & all of them had a hard time playing the right side. Now they have the reverse problem, they just can’t seem to get anything right this yr.

And why bring up Pageau, he has already demonstrated this yr that he is too small & can’t handle NHL players especially in the faceoff circle. We were just beginning to win more than our share of faceoffs & Zibanejad was starting to win more. Stone is the guy they need in Ottawa along with Grant to replace Condra & Conacher two guys who are not contributing. Is Buffalo dressing Scott for tonight’s game? If yes, are they expecting Pageau to fight him? This team could have a bigger, tougher team & yet they always go back to the little guys who just can’t cut it in the NHL. Yet they want to be tougher to play against, makes no sense.

    • Alcatraz

If we dress Pageau, then shouldn’t Buffalo realize they need more speed and Scott will hurt them? We always look at it as meeting toughness for toughness, why can’t we let them realize its foolish to have Scott

Secondly, its about rewarding players. Stone hasn’t stood out in Bingo this year, Pageau has since he went down. Like another poster said it creates competition, you play well, you get called up and earn big boys bucks for a few games
Pageau being insulated with greening and neil will allow him to have space on the ice

Finally, Ceci has been great, and buffalo is weak (even though we lost to them) so why not give him his first NHL test against a weak offensive team? Rather than lets say LA on Saturday

      Makes sense to me

      • Millennium

There’s a really interesting point in there that I think we often overlook as fans. Our lineup matching is always reactive: if they dress goons, we dress goons etc. But why do we have to be on the defensive in that area? Why can’t we be proactive in shaping the game to our style by dressing the type of guys that force them to bench their goons, or at least play them less or risk being exposed as slow and ineffective at playing hockey.

There’s obviously a risk factor in playing small guys against headcases like Scott, but if we play our game first and foremost and make them adjust to us for a change, then we are better off.

        • runningbear1974

          agree

        • Alcatraz

Thats the exactly the point I’m making

Detroit has had success for years with this mentality. Who cares who is on the other bench. Shanahan and the referees will do their job if Scott becomes an idiot. We need to stop being reactive to this type of stuff. And not just us, the whol eleague. Slowly it will eliminate the use of goons, and at this point I really only think there are about 10 goons left in the NHL (Kassian, Orr, McLaren, Scott, Parros off the top of my head) People like Thornton (suspension not included) Neil, Prust, all have actual roles, and fighting is ok from their perspective in my eyes)

Anyways lets get our speed game going and say “catch us if you can”

          • NickofTime

Detroit has had Bertuzzi for yrs, he’s 6’4″ & a very tough player & good fighter. They also have another guy who fights whose name escapes me plus a few other guys who will go if need be, didn’t Smith their D go with Neil last game? Jacques Martin didn’t like fighting & got his ass handed to him many times by Quinn & the Leafs, check our history.

Speed game hahaha with Phillips, Wiercioch, Corvo, Neil, Z. Smith, Spezza & Gryba in the game. LOL.

        • NickofTime

Because if we don’t dress Kassian & they dress Scott & he takes a run at someone than who will have to fight him? Neil, & that isn’t fair to Neil. Have we not seen this before? We dress a small lineup & the other team, mostly the Leafs dress their goons & run rickshaw over our players & everyone is pissed we didn’t dress a tougher team.

Fucking bleeding heart liberals don’t like fighting & don’t want our team to respond but it’s okay if they get their heads beat in. We are already missing Methot & Cowen two of our tough players & now they are inserting two soft players, still makes no sense. Let’s hope Buffalo gives us a break tonight & doesn’t turn it into a rough game.

      • sens23

Stone hasnt stoon out? point per game player on the 3rd line, plays all situations, and is a plus player
sens needed a center that is the only reason pageau was called up over stone

        • Alcatraz

Does the Murray comment help you understand the logic?? He wants Mika in the top 6 and without Pageau we keep using MZ in the bottom 6 as a Centre

Calling up Stone doesn’t change this fact

          • NickofTime

Grant is a better player than Pageau & played great his time up here, they should have & could have brought him up. What is it with the love for Pageau, I just don’t get it? He hasn’t been that good this yr at all.

          • sens23

did you not read my post i said the only reason pageau got called up was because they needed a center. so zibanejad could play in the top 6.

      • NickofTime

Stone is a point per game player in Bingo, that is when he hasn’t been hurt. He is doing much better than Pageau & he would have been much better than Pageau in Ottawa. When is this team going to learn that our small guys just can’t cut it in the NHL

    • Miguel

Careful who are we to question PMac,
Seriously the fact that many of us are constantly scratching our heads with regards to some of the decsions, is certainly a major reason for some of our frustrations.
If PMac was making decisions and we are winning… he is a genius
however many of the decisions have NOT been logical, which are then maginified when they lose
Many of the decisons have NOT worked this year, lets hope this Ceci call up finally be the one that makes him a genius again.

      • aegiszx

Ceci succeeds expectations, stays up, and we ship out the BUST that is Cowen… Please Murray make it happen…

        • laffin681021

Kind of early in Cowen’s career to call him a bust. Just because he hasn’t played up to expectations so far doesn’t mean he’s a bust. IMO he’s been starting to come around so let’s just hope this suspension doesn’t take him back a step.

    • spezzerman

if you’re basing your game plan around the WORST player in the league, you’re not doing it right.

  • RUSH RLZ

Anderson to start. Damn there goes my endorphin trifecta!

  • Alcatraz

    Cody Hodgson out for tonight

  • laffin681021

They really gave Hoffman a good look huh? SMH
