Senators Recall Da Costa from Binghamton

With Mark Stone down with an injury, the Ottawa Senators have again turned to Binghamton to fill a spot in the line up.

Stephane Da Costa was recalled this afternoon and is expected to join the team on their current road trip in Washington. Da Costa started the year in the NHL but never really made much of an impact, spending a lot of time on the team’s fourth line. He has since gone down to Bingo and been a key part of the offence down there, racking up 37 points in 37 games.

There was no immediate update on Stone’s injury but initial word is he would not be joining the team on the upcoming road trip. Disappointing turn of events for Stone who was really hoping to stick with the big club for good but obviously a great chance for Da Costa to show what he can do.

The Senators visit the Washington Capitals tomorrow night. Craig Anderson is expected to get the start in goal.

          LOL, To much going on. I just responded to you on the other page Sandy but basically he would have to clear waivers on a call up, however this being an injury call-up, he will have a chance to show someone he belongs and they might be able to move him. IMO

    DeCosta has great hands but must protect the puck better. He was loosing the puck a lot to the bigger boys in the corners. Hopefully he’s worked on his corner play.

    Chirp – can you comment on the recent goaltender usage by the Sens? Are either of the backstops on the block (Andy in particular)? The organization has to be aware of the stats disparity between Andy and Lehner…is there something going on here that might explain this odd usage besides organizational loyalty?

          I believe that Lehner is the future of this team, but where is this *vastly* outplaying Anderson stuff coming from? Same was said in the last post. Other than a SO in his last game, Lehner has struggled. Not that Anderson has been lights out, but he has outplayed Lehner this year.

          That aside, Lehner has to play more games to get into a groove.,

            Going back to Dec. 21, with Anderson in goal, the Sens have points in 9 of 10 games (6-1-3). Lehner’s last 10 games have been 2-7-1.

            There is a fair point to be made that Anderson’s GAA and Save Percentage have been significantly improved in his last 10 starts or so. He’s started to regress more towards normal goaltender performances. Overall Lehner’s numbers have still been better but realistically Anderson has in general been solid in most of his last ten games. The more we play him and the more he recovers the easier he will be to trade for the right piece when we want Lehner to ascend into the #1 role.

            Lehner has not played much after the point where the Sens have “turned their season around”. Lehner played a lot of games when the Sens were still struggling. I think Lehner has 2 games ( not sure he might only have 1, I don’t feel like checking) since the Sens have turned their season around. Of course Andy will have a better W-L record. The one game I remember when Lehner was in the cage, he got a shutout. If you think Andy has outplayed Lehner this year, I think you better watch this team more closely.

            Well, the team “turned their season around” with Anderson in the goal. Would the Sens have had the same turnaround with Lehner in net? Maybe. Maybe not. We will never know. Like I said above, I believe that Lehner is the future of this team and he needs to play more. Up to this point, he has not “vastly” outplayed Anderson. I don’t believe that he has had the opportunity. His role is as backup.

            Stats are very subjective and can be bent to whatever point you want to make.

            Karlsson has 46 pts and is -12.
            Cowen has 10 pts and is +2.

            Who is the better player? Who has helped the team the most?

            Results tell a much better story.

            Everybody knows +/- can be a very misleading stat line. GAA and SV% on the other hand aren’t misleading at all. Anderson struggled all year up until this turnaround. Lehner…not so much. It was more of our defensive game that was garbage, Lehner was still making the saves that he should make during our horrid start, Andy wasn’t. Is Lehner our future? Yes. Has he vastly outplayed Andy this year? stats lean towards yes, and I think most fans will agree with me on this.

            Stats may lean towards yes, but the results say no. If Lehner had *vastly* outplayed Anderson, the wins would be there. You can quote stats all night long, but they do not equate to wins.

            I am not bashing Lehner. As I have said repeatedly, he is the future and needs to play more.

            I feel that you guys are arguing just for the sake of argument. We all know the old saying regarding “lies, damned lies and statistics.” I think we need to look at what’s going on during a game and try to ask several objective questions: who plays an overall better game, Lehner or Anderson? Which of the two is more likely to make a key save and hold the team together at critical junctures in the game? Which of the two has had more team support than the other? Which of the two has played more during a team slump? I’m not even sure anyone can answer these questions, as anyone will make the stats and facts fit with their personal bias. All in all, we come to a chicken-and-egg situation, when we ask whether the goalie makes the team better, or vice versa. In the end, I think it’s a matter of personal gut feeling. Mine tells me that Lehner should get more games.

            Great point! I love Lehner and believe that he is now and will continue to be a great goalie. I have also said that he needs more starts. I only questioned the “vastly outplayed Anderson” quote.

    Hope Da Costa can produce tonight because IMO he is no longer in our long term plans. Its probably to just showcase him. It will be interesting to see the line ups as he is a natural center and i believe he would struggle to play winger same way someone like spezza would.

    Was hoping we call up one of petersson, peumpel or hoffman.

        what possible evidence could exist that would prove intent? Short of a video of Cooke admitting he did it on purpose, its all conjecture. No matter how compelling the conjecture and circumstantial evidence, its not enough to make anything happen.

          wellll lets see what happens? I can understand why eugene is pursuing this though. His number 1 asset was injured for an entire season. Cost him $$. I would do the same.

            While no CBA-expert, I suspect there is zero legal backing for a team to receive financial compensation for a player lost to injury, intentional or otherwise. If Melnyk somehow affects anything here, it would be a dangerous precedent for the league to set.

            I see what you mean. I heard something about a criminal case or something though when emery had that goalie fight. Tsn calling for an “assault” case or something…and no one got hurt. It might be a possibility?

            I suppose, if somehow Melnyk had found hard proof of premeditated assault, there could be a scenario in which that was pursued. I don’t know if that would go through the league (unless Melnyk is trying a ‘pay me or I go external’ move).

            Anyways, as you say, its a wait and see what happens.

          The only thing coming into question was the stomp.,. and you can’t prove that was intentional..

      I’m of mixed opinion on this. If he somehow manages to prove something, then great, string up Cooke by his short laces. No great loss for hockey as a whole.
      On the other hand, it seems to me that nothing can be produced that will be conclusive so it just invites ridicule.

      But that little innocent boy inside of me, the one that still believes in Santa, is hoping like hell that he can prove malice and deliberate intent to injure….

    Moving Spezza to RW position? could be a good chance to try it out with Stone out for a few..
    MacArthur – Turris – Ryan
    Conacher – Zibanejad – Michalek
    Greening – DaCosta – Spezza
    Condra – Smith – Neil

    My thought is putting a good 2 way offensive centre with spezza playing offensive setupman/sniper on the wing also Spezza is still a capable centerman who can take draws and just rotate back into his wing position.

    Call me nuts but MacArthur & Turris are the ones with Chemistry on that Line Ryan just helps them along… think of Spezza playing RW…

    Conacher – Zibanejad – Ryan
    Michalek – Smith – Stone
    Condra – Greening – Neil

    While I like Spezza & Stone gaining chemistry together or at least trying too… i wonder if Spezza would play better 2 way by playing a wing position and leave center to someone faster and better defensively or if Stone could play LW

    Stone – Zibanejad – Spezza ( ? ) Another possibility is can Ryan play LW and also would he want to?

      My first objection would be the faceoffs. Spezza is the best faceoff man the Senators have.

      I actually think M-T-R all have chemistry together. They seem to know where they are around the ice. Ryan often finds Turris, who often finds MacArthur.

      I just can’t see moving your number one center to the wing. Spezza is a pure possession player that excels when he has players that can get themselves into openings. I don’t have an issue with it per say, just don’t see it happening

    I love SDC s game.His vision and anticipation is NHL worthy. I had a talk with Tim Murray one time about Stephan and he said he loved his skill set but at that time questioned his commitment ,That year he had stayed in France to work with their National team and came back with a major ( undisclosed injury). This year I think we all saw a stronger version and maybe he will be shuffling off to Buffalo.

    As most of you pointed out there is correlation between sens playing an afternoon game and sens losing. We can add to that with the sens dressing in black and losing. And when you put both of them together as was the case this weekend you get a result like that.

    Either of our goalies would have much better numbers if the TEAM didn’t consistently allow 35+ shots, 2-3 breakways and many 2 on 1s and 3 on 1s.

      Couldn’t agree with you anymore. We need to tighten up on the defensive end.. The offence should just come with the team we have. Is there any leads on any possible trades before the break?     The good news is that Cowen doesn’t drag Karlsson down noticeably. The bad news is that without Karlsson, the opponents dominate the Senators when Cowen’s on the ice. It’s pretty clear that Karlsson is keeping Cowen afloat in this pairing.

    This isn’t isolated to just Karlsson, though. Looking to Cowen’s with or without you numbers, most of his frequent linemates fare better when Cowen is on the bench than when he’s on the ice with them.

        Karlsson has the most average time on ice at — Cowen has the 3rd most time on the ice..

    So Leafs won… the Sens now sit 6 pts in back of them… with 2 games in hand. The Leafs are now 2 pts behind the Habs to get into the top 3 in the East. I certainly don’t want that. They have winnable games coming up… The Habs have a tough stretch coming up… They could flop spots…
    This road trip for the Sens is so important to keep with the pack.
    If Tor keeps winning.. the only spot open will be the last wild card spot.. for about 5 or 6 teams to fight over… Yikes..

    I agree, but at the same time i really don’t think that da costa was the best call up. if you want to try spezza on the wing, i would recommend bringing up curtis lazar and give me some pro ice time and let him learn what it takes to play in the big league. Don’t get me wrong da costa is a great puck handler but he’s not consistent. Spezza needs someone to play with, and honestly i think that person to play with him is Lazar, call me crazy but the kid is talented and would definetly adapt the same way Cody Ceci did. My lineup would look something like this.

    MaCarthur – Turris – Ryan
    Conacher – Zbinajed – Michalek
    Condra – Lazar – Spezza
    Greening – Smith – Neil

    Karlsson – Cowen
    Methot – Ceci
    Philips – Weircoch

        Actually I think it would be better with Ovi in. Sens shut down Ovi really well. If Ovi is not in the lineup it means the lineups change, which means it’s more difficult for the coach to pair up, especially as the visiting team.

      I’d actually rather he play. We usually do a good job keeping him under control (especially if Neil is playing). And this season any “on paper” reason for us to have a better chance of winning usually seems to translate into us not bringing our best effort. It’s too easy to picture us down in the third period and someone pointing out “Wow it’s like with OV8 out the Sens just felt like they’d like have no trouble”

      I can see Hax’s point – sometimes it gets a bit old to see nothing but complaints, and usually from the same culprits (Sandy hates the owner, NickofTime hates Conacher, Boom has very little time for Condra….)
      On the other hand, fans do have the right to voice their opinions, and I don’t think you want to spend your time being a censor, any more than you have to.
      What about a permament ChirpED entry devoted to line-up/coaching/etc. decisions.
      That would provide an opportunity for those who feel the need to vent without annoying those who get annoyed by the constant venting…
      Just a thought.

    Personally I think advanced statistics are great for the game, but it also gives fans more reasons to bitch
    Cowen and Spezza and Andersone tc can all be picked apart for certain stats. On cie svp or corsi, or fenwick, or PK sv%
    You literally can choose a slew of stats to protect your argument
    Follow Yost and/or Hope_smoke on twitter(leaf guy) and its negativity constantly. I liek Yost but he uses whatever stats he can to always take a egative approach on any topic.

    To clarify, I would never suggest that people shouldn’t be allowed to post whatever they want. I was really just remarking about how this season seems to be filled with more negativity from fans than previous ones. Not sure if it’s a shift in the fan base at large or if there’s just been an influx of more “bitchy” posters here – probably both.

    My best guess is that most fans can sense that this team is “close” and they’re just impatient/anxious for the final pieces to fall into place.

    And yes, the comment section here is still light years ahead of anything else out there.

    Without Methot.. that defense looks really inexperienced along with Phillips, who we all admit.. isn’t like he used to be. Anderson who has let in bad goals the last couple of games that cost the Sens points.. behind a defense, which, based on who will be on the ice.. could be defensively challenged tonight. Breaking up of the Smith checking line.. it’s going to be a tough game… Ovey or not..
    Karlsson sounded over-confident when asked about playing Wash the other day… that’s not good either.

    This team has to play the way they did against Mtl. Control the offensive zone and the neutral zone. Do that.. they can win…. Take Wash for granted because they have a win streak against them.. and it will bite them in the ass..
