This afternoon, the Ottawa Senators announced that later this season, they’ll honour the first number in the history of the modern day franchise.
Daniel Alfredsson’s number 11 will officially be raised to the rafters at the Canadian Tire Centre before a game against the Detroit Red Wings on December 29th.
Goes without saying but this a well-deserved honour for Alfredsson. In case you’re in the mood for a walk down memory lane, this post from Alfredsson’s retirement is a great place to start. Alfredsson is without a doubt the most popular player in the history of the franchise and his influence on this organization and this city is certainly worthy of this honour.
As an aside, kudos to the organization for keeping this announcement mostly under-wraps until this afternoon’s press conference. Not easy to do in the age of Twitter and with a fan base clearly starved for hockey news of any kind.
