Senators Cruise to Convincing Win in Calgary

FIVE QUICK THOUGHTS

-They don’t make road wins much better than that. The Ottawa Senators walked into Calgary and made it look easy, cruising to a 6-0 win over a Flames team that had played pretty well before running headlong into The System. The Sens have now banked four points on their trip through Western Canada and have a chance at two more later tonight. A lot was made about finding a way to tread water without Erik Karlsson but this team has done much more than that, playing damn good hockey without their Captain and best player. They have now outshot the opposition in all four games. Just a lot to like about the way Ottawa has started this season.

-Close games have been the norm under Guy Boucher so it was a little bit strange to watch the Senators embarrass a team like that. Strange but satisfying. Ottawa’s biggest margin of victory all last season was four and that wasn’t exactly a conventional blow out with two empty net goals. Calgary pushed a little bit early in the game but for the most part, it felt like the Senators were in complete control. Good time to be able to cruise to a victory too because it allowed Boucher to distribute the ice time more evenly ahead of a tough game against Edmonton later tonight.

-Ottawa’s power play woes have been well-documented early this season but they’ve still managed a way to bank points despite struggling with the man advantage. They were much better against Calgary. Derick Brassard’s goal late in the second period didn’t end up counting as a power play goal but you could tell that it helped take the edge off a little bit. They officially broke the drought in the third period on an absurd one timer by Mike Hoffman. When he shoots the puck like that it makes you wonder how Ottawa’s doesn’t have a top 10 power play. The Senators finished 2/7 on the power play.

-The Thomas Chabot development plan is officially…complicated. While the Senators have been pretty open about the fact that they never planned to call him back up this quickly, he has looked comfortable in his two games and at times, seems to be earning the trust of the Head Coach. Not an easy thing to do. Chabot picked up his first point in the National Hockey League on Ottawa’s 5th goal of the game and played a career-high 15:06. With Karlsson and Oduya coming back, Chabot might be heading down again soon but it’s pretty clear he can play at this level.

-So how is everyone enjoying the surprising Cody Ceci Redemption Tour? Goals in two straight now for the Sens ice time leader and an assist on the slump-busting power play goal by Mike Hoffman. Outside of that one third period against the Washington Capitals in the season opener, Ceci has been quite good for the Senators.  No player has been asked to do more in the absence of Erik Karlsson and to this point, he has come through in a big way. This is an important season for Ceci as the organization tries to determine exactly what they have before handing out another contract to the RFA to be.
