Rumours Swirl Around Senators, Sabres

Tim Murray has officially put his stamp on the Buffalo Sabres.  And based on the rumours that are swirling around tonight, there may be lots more to come.

Ryan Miller is a member of the St. Louis Blues after a deal that sent Miller and Steve Ott to St. Louis in exchange for Jaroslav Halak, Chris Stewart, a first round pick in 2015 and a 3rd round pick in 2016.  In most situations, a deal between the Blues and Sabres wouldn’t be worthy of a new post here on SensChirp but this is obviously a little different.

The Senators and Sabres have been linked in plenty of trade rumours the last month or so.  And as you’ll recall, the Senators also had an interest in Chris Stewart in St. Louis.  While now he’s in Buffalo and the sense around the league seems to be that it’s only a matter of time before the Senators and Sabres pull the trigger on a deal.  Tim Murray knows Ottawa’s prospects real well and now can work on a deal with Uncle Bryan.  Chris Stewart will be at the centre of that.  Matt Moulson has been discussed.  Same goes for Christian Ehrhoff.

Meanwhile the Senators have a number of prospects they’d be willing to part with, including Rochester native Shane Prince.

The fun is just getting started, Sens fans!

  • Deadly

The writing is on the wall. All that is missing is the details. Remembering back to a conversation with Tim and I think SDC will be moved.

  • Joshua Delorme

Chris Stewart and Christian Ehrhoff to the Sens for S. Prince, M. Stone, C. Greening and 3rd round pick

    • Aaron 2.0

That a slight over-estimation of our players. 2 proven NHL’ers for two prospects, an over-payed dead-weight player, and a 3rd? It looks like Tim Murray may be good at the trading game. It’ll cost a lot more to get both of those guys. I’d be happy if we focused on getting Ehrhoff. But, given that he played a lot of minutes tonight, he’s not likely to be a target for us [sigh].

    • Hawkeye

Might be more like Chris Stewart, Matt Moulson, and Christian Ehrhoff to the Sens for Michalek, Greening, S. Prince, Z Smith, and Wiercoch

      • Joshua Delorme

        I would make that trade

      • CUP 2014-15

I am sure we would need to say good bye to one of Puemple or Stone instead of Michalek and one of the either Driedger or Hogberg in place of Greening

    • Matthew Rutldge-Taylor

Why the Sabres hands are tied with respect to Ehrhoff. In a nutshell, he’s not going anywhere due to cap recapture issues.

  • chief

Man I hope we get a dman

  • CUP 2014-15

Just posted by Buff is that there is also a cond. 1st round in 2014 should Miller resign or the Blues make the Conf. finals

    • FistsofNeil25

In addition to Halak, Stewart, Carrier, 2015 1st and a 2016 3rd? Really?? If so then Tim just pulled off highway robbery.

      • CUP 2014-15

        no shit

  • Senator-Stanley

Just arrived in Vancouver for the Heritage Classic.
Not a lot of hype in the city and still lots of tickets left for this game.
Great seeing lots of Sens fans at Vancouver Airport this morning.
Hoping the mood starts to pick up around here.

Sounds like there are lots of great Sens fans in Vancouver. You’ll have a great time.
When I was there, was sent to a bar called Mahony and Sons. Run by Senators fans. Amazing spot.

      • sprucesens

cool, will look for mahony and sons. I’m heading there tomorrow morning senator-Stanley! hopefully there is lots of sens fans so I don’t stick out like a sore thumb all decked out!!

  • Sandy

I just don’t want Murray to empty the cupboards to get two players…

    • MikeS

I just hope we dont send out Borocop and Claesson and not get a D in return. Ottawa’s biggest problem is their D suck… We dont need power-forwards rentals

      • SenaTHOR

I don’t see Boro as an upgrade on anybody we have now.

    • spinorama

I do… that was the whole point of stocking up. we still have our prime prospect lazar. we need to show bobby ryan we are serious about winning. we can still recuperate assets with a phillips or michalek or greening deal.

    • zippy

If BM is convinced Stewart or Moulson would resign in the summer then go for it!!!

      • Joshua Delorme

Moulson is Free Agent this summer and Stewart has another year on his deal

    • CUP 2014-15

only so much room at the inn Sandy. Let’s just say its 2 yrs from now
      CMAC KT RYAN
      ( Spezz trade)ZBad Stewart
      Hoffman Lazar Stone
      Grant Z Smith Schnider
Still leaves Puemple, Prince, SDC, JGP, Robinson and what ever return in moving older players such as Andy and Greening. The D still has Boro, Gleasson and Wickstand to go with the Ottawa six. These players can’t all be here and they can’t still be in Bingo in two more years asn the team above will still be very young in 2016-17. Truly has been a crazy rebuild by the Murrays. Pull out whomever from that line-up and throw in others as you will, I just quickly put it out there. I like Puemple a ton.

    • Spoons

The cupboards are overflowing anyways. For Stewart AND Moulson, I would guess 3 of Ottawa’s prospects plus a conditional pic if Moulson signs. In addition, BM would probably ask to take Condra or Greening off our hands.

      • Pugnacious Serf

And no more excuses for not having talent around him…

  • EHMatt

If it’s all 3 and we manage to keep some decent prospects out of the deal. I’ll be pretty happy. Even happier if we can keep Moulson, which unfortunately would be doubtful. What would piss me off is if a 1st rounder from next year goes to Buffalo. That’s a good draft year and I wouldn’t want to give that up.

  • 000000011111010101011111001010

AJ Jakubec (TSN sens host.reporter) saying Sabres want Mike Hoffman
in any deal involving Stewart along with possibly Puempel or Prince

    • CUP 2014-15

I am in at Hoffman and Prince.

    • Aaron 2.0

I’d be out on that. Stewart’s numbers are not really that amazing. I think his reputation is better than his production. I’d still love Murray to focus on Ehrhoff!

  • Matthew Rutldge-Taylor

The only Sens prospects that are untouchable in my book are Ceci, Lazar, and Puempel. That’s not to say that I don’t value Hoffman, Stone, Prince, Boro, and even Pageau etc. But, none of these guys are likely to be top players for the Sens down the road. The problem is Tim knows that.

But, if Tim will to take a low-ball offer from Uncle Bryan (he isn’t but we can pretend), I’d send any two prospects (except for Ceci, Lazar and Puempel) for Chris Stewart.

  • BigDaddy

I am on the get Chris Stewart bandwagon, especially if we can get him based on the value Tim was able to get from St. Louis #fleece

  • Conor_smythe

Lot of Speculation on what happens next.. Sounds to me like the swing trade only happens if Bryan Murray can:
A)Dump a bit of salary on another team first (phillips?)
    B)Convince Eugene

Could it possibly involve all 3 rumoured Buffalo players?

    • Conor_smythe

Michalek, Greening, Zibanejad, Prince, Pageau, Gryba

is that enough to get all 3?

      • FistsofNeil25

I wouldn’t trade Zibanejad for any of those guys. I’m not fully against trading Zibanejad, but I’m only interested if it’s in a package deal for a legitimate star player.

Obviously acquiring all three of Stewart, Moulson and Ehrhoff is a bit far fetched, but maybe we can at least acquire two of them? I would be all for a trade that would bring Stewart and Ehrhoff to Ottawa.

        To Ottawa:

        Ehrhoff + Stewart

        To Buffalo:

Greening + Wiercioch + Prince + whatever other prospects Tim wants (not named Ceci, Lazar, Puempel, Claesson)

Then for salary reasons and because he sucks…

        To Boston:

        Phillips

        To Ottawa:

        Spooner/Knight/Camara + pick

        • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

You only move zibanejad if it brings you someone of e Kane level… Not necessarily him(although I still love him)… But it would have to be another young well established player

  • A-Train

So is this Stewart-for-prospects deal going to produce more or fewer tears than Turris-for-Rundblad?

Judging from Twitter etc last night my guess is more.

    • Pugnacious Serf

Ha ha. When all know how terrible that turned out. Time to get rid of a few of the misfit toys and if its going to cost a solid prospect, so be it.

  • Dirk-Diggler

I want no part of a package that only has Stewart and Moulson coming here.

I’d rather Stewart and Ehrhoff any day though.

I’d be willing to give Prince, 2015 2nd, Cowen and Da Costa.

Even if we made those trades I’d still want to get rid of Michalek, Phillips and Conacher.

  • Pugnacious Serf

Stewart is in a very similar position as Turris; where his ice time has steadily declined to the point Hitchcock was giving him 3rd/4th line minutes. His break out year 2010 he played 17 minutes a game, his arrival in St. Louis he was up to 18 (and scoring a point a game), down to 15 a game the previous two seasons and down to 13 now. If he comes into town the last of Muckler’s university experiments can get sent off to the far reaches of the NHL. I’ve not seen a collection of Senators regress as fast as Greening, Condra and Conacher in the history of the team. I can’t imagine anymore then one of those guys has a Sens uniform on Tuesday. The Detroit game was an utter embarrassment and the above mentioned Senators have no purpose other than pirouettes and triple sow-cows.

  • Yukon Cornelius

Defence, Murray! This team needs D-E-F-E-N-C-E. Ya know like someone to teach Cowen how to skate. Defence.

Sorry for that I just hope if I said it enough that cosmic forces will transmit it into Bryan’s conscious.

Everyone knows that great teams are built from the back out. Everyone knows it is the senators’ defence that is failing them most right now. I’m not going to be upset if Murray gets an additional offensive punch but defence is what they need most. He better be making calls for Ehrhoff, NYI’s MacDonald or another bona fide Uncle Bryan’s extra special secret trade target. Especially when Phillips and Cowen are being played night-after-night (over our prospects down in Bingo).

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Move Philips out add Boro next year… We are already much improved

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Or maybe slightly better… Drop Corvo… Have Philips as #7(although I suspect from his comments he isn’t ready for that type of role yet)… Move Boro up.

  • Don Ciccio

You would have to think that if Buffalo has any plans of trading Stewart then, he was probably told not to report to them……Why would you have someone come into the dressing room only to trade him away in the next couple of days.

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I have a feeling if we get a D from Buffalo it will be Meyers… He is a classic Murray acquisition.

Could end up being a Turris 2.0 trade. Was Tim Murray high on Cowen?

The other parts I’m kinda torn on though… Hard to argue with the value in the players, but would be useless acquisitions if they are only this year rentals(Moulson)

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Chirp throw a bone…. Saw you mention tonnes of names on twitter

    Spill some beans

    • FistsofNeil25

Yeah Chirp, what are you hearing?

  • Frank

The Sabres are in a full rebuild. They didn’t need Halak and Stewart. Obviously Tim had prior discussions with other teams before making the Miller deal. My guess is Stewart is all but done with Ottawa. It’s a matter of whether or not there are other pieces involved

  • whammer44

Seems apparent that the Hoffman call up was to showcase him. Not sure if Sens are on Erhoff’s choice of teams but if they can pick up Stewart and Erhoff for something like Hoffman, Greening, (Wiercioch or Gryba) and a pick…I’d do it.

    • FistsofNeil25

I don’t think the Hoffman call up had anything to do with showcasing him. When the team returned from the Olympic break, Maclean stated that he wants Zibanejad at center from here on out, pretty much ruling out a Da Costa or Pageau recall. Not to mention Hoffman has been by far the best forward for Bingo this year. He deserved another shot.

I would prefer if we kept Hoffman and gave him a chance to the rest of the season in the NHL. Speed is a great asset and he is the fastest skater in the organization.

      • whammer44

Maybe, but I’m guessing Tim wanted to see Hoffman in a couple of more NHL games as he worked on this deal with Uncle Bryan…we shall see shortly methinks.

Was also thinking that Tim might value Cowen because he drafted him…maybe there is an even bigger deal here, perhaps with both Cowen and Meyers involved!?

        • FistsofNeil25

I would be very much in favor of a deal involving Cowen and Myers. Cowen is a Tim Murray guy and he may not feel strongly about Myers. Cowen may be the more physical player in the long run but Myers possesses the athleticism and offensive upside that Cowen doesn’t.

I think Myers is a better fit for the type of game Maclean wants this team to play.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I’m not sure what their plan is… Obviously they aren’t going to come out and say hey we are only calling him up for a showcase.

But it makes sense to move others before hin

    • Simple Jack

thats not enough to get those players, but hey i would take that trade if available

  • Simple Jack

i say ottawa still needs to dump/trade roster players to make room for new sens coming up from bingo and trades. carrying 8 dmen no longer.

    on the block
    conacher,condra,cowen,weircroitch,michalek,neil,greening,philips,corvo,spezza,hoffman,kassian.

    keep sakes, karlsson, methot,ceci,turris,ryan,macauthur,anderson,lehner.

    anything can happen.

  • thirstytraveller

Bryan better not sell the senators prospects the way Muckler did. dump phillips greening 9mm, and if a good haul maybe maybe spezza.

    • Doc

That’s what I’m scared about. I couldn’t care less about any of the rentals, we are not contenders.

Not a big fan of Stewart, he’s been on the decline for a little while. And Moulson is a pure rental. Hearing the names that are rumoured to go back to Buffalo scares me to no end.

      Ughhh….

  • Sensnation

Sounds like this Sens – Sabres trade is going to surprise a lot of people. Package could include Moulson, Stewart and Erhoff and obviously cost most of the cupboard. I sure hope Puempel isn’t a prospect we move for a rental, but I’m definitely intrigued if BM does indeed stir the pot to this extent. Should make for a fun end to the season, if not controversial.

    • karlssens

Where do you hear this? If anything the rumours have kind of died down.

      • Doc

By all accounts, yesterday’s major deal between Buffalo and St-Louis was a precursor for a trade with Ottawa.

      • Sensnation

As Doc said, it’s everywhere. Ottawa was almost the 3rd team in the deal yesterday, and it’s believe Buffalo only accepted Stewart as part of the deal because Ottawa wants him and Tim wants some of our prospects he picked.

    • Sandy

That wouldn’t be smart to remove most of the prospects…

      • Sensnation

Agreed, it all depends who goes, but either way we are so deep that if we start chasing the cup for the next 3 years, our next round of picks will be ready by the time we need them.

  • Dirk-Diggler

Hey Sens Chirp, spill the beans!!! We wan to know the names you are hearing…

  • A-Train

I’m not sure how Bryan Murray could have been any clearer: He sees this team as a being a couple of veterans away from contending in the next two years. View his moves through that lens.

    • Doc

Key word is ‘next two years’.

Moulson brings nothing has I highly doubt he re-signs here. Stewart is nothing exceptional and is signed for only another year.

Just not feeling it I guess.

      • A-Train

Not offering an opinion on the trade really, just pointing out that is what he said he’d do.

But on the subject of Moulson — who knows? Some salary’s coming off the books plus the guy hasn’t exactly played for winning/coveted franchises. Maybe the idea that he’d be a key piece on a team that’s consistently in the playoffs would be enticing.

        • Doc

I hope you’re right, because I really don’t miss the Muckler days. Erhoff is the only piece that I think could fit in our system and that is signed long term.

          Queasy feeling…

Erhoff and Stewart for PW, Cowen, Prince, Hoberg and Stone or Puempel. yes, no or interchange.

    • Sensturion

I wouldn’t give up on Hogberg already. He hasn’t even gone to an NHL training camp yet.

      • Conor_smythe

hogberg is worth less than nothing to us right now.. he hasn’t even gone to an Nhl training camp yet..

    • Sensnation

Seems like too much for me, but I’m the only guy in the room still high on Cowen. I would be willing to only give up 2 of Cowen, PW, Prince and Puempel.

  • A-Train

For the record, none of Stewart/Moulson/Ehrhoff get me really excited.

But I can’t say I’m any more attached to any of the guys playing in Binghamton either. As long as Zibanejad/Ceci/Lazar/Lehner stay in the org…and I think they all will…I’ll find it hard to get upset about any of these trades.

    • Doc

Not giving up on Stone yet, he showed that he’s about ready for some NHL action. Hoffman has all the tools to succeed, and I hope he sticks with Zibanejad to see what he can do.

Puempel is probably our purest goal scorer in the system and will no doubt be a good NHLer one day. But I get what you are saying.

      • A-Train

My main issue is that the guys they are bringing in are not really elite level talents, more solid B+ types that would be good on a winning team.

To be a real contender you really need 3 or more truly elite players — the kind of guys who play for their countries in the Olympics and are in the mix when you talk about best at their position.

Karlsson is that. Spezza was once that. Ryan might be that.

Hard to obtain, but necessary to be a great team (see Sens teams of the ’00s)

        • Doc

          The good old days…

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I am in the same boat…torn on a deal around them. Stewart is WAY too streaky….will get torn a new one every other game because of this. Moulson…who knows would need to be signed…and Ehrhoff…dunno don’t think that is who they would be after.

  • luckan20

What ever it is Greening should be part of the deal. Eugene will not take lots of money, when the team is not showing any resilience. I also don’t want to see Sens lose Claesson or Puempel.

I will take Ehrhoff contract from Sabers, if they are taking Cowen back.

  • Millennium

A rental seems pointless this season, and Stewart probably isn’t the answer to Spezza’s winger problem (unless he’s the next MacArthur). Not to mention our defensive woes.

Some of the prospect names being talked about in terms of a trade for Stewart (and maybe Moulson) just turn me right off it further. Names like Puempel, Hoffman, Stone. I’d rather keep all three of those guys than take either name being offered by Buffalo. Call me overly-attached to our prospects, and I understand you pay for proven ability over potential, but a rental and a guy like Stewart for any of those guys? Not for me thanks.

    • Doc

      Agreed.

    • Deadly

Agree that we should be keeping some of our young guys. Stone,Puempel for sure. On defence Claussen for sure. Lazar is a keeper.

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

This site is SO confusing…One day everyone is all about the Q4Q trade…when something starts to materialize everyone says we should hang on to all of our prospects except the guy ranked 10th on their list.

Fact is…we do not have enough space for absolutely everyone on our farm/current team….Kudos to Murray and staff for that…but the real test is how they use our overabundance of talent and translate it useful players.

    • Millennium

Q4Q is great. But Stewart is hardly ‘Quality’. The kind of Q4Q trade I would like to see them make is another Ryan-sized deal. A REAL top 6 winger, and a REAL top-4 D man.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I tend to agree…I kind of hope that all of this speculation is off base. Personally I think offensively there are better targets.

  • CUP 2014-15

Nobody wants to see our top prospects sent packing for a rental and it looks like that’s not going to happen. Then we all have our own favs, like Stone, Puemple and Lazar. and we don’t want them to be part of any deal. Fact remains that if you want a 30+ goal scorer like Ryan it cost huge, we saw it for Ryan. Stewart is a rare talent of size and skill and plays with an edge. He’s not playing to what is expected of him in the 30+ goal scorer everyone wants but if he was playing to his potential he would cost ZBad, Puempel and a number 1. With the buy low sell high mentality, I would like to take Stewart for much less then he will be worth IF he finds his game. Something feels right about this.
No GM is going to take what we don’t want in quantity for a quality player.

I hope the Sens stay away from Stewart. He is more name recogintion than anything else. Now Erhoff would be an intriguing piece. He would be good for Karlsson, but it would probably mean the end to Spezza as I doubt the Sens would want another long term contract on an older player.

  • MakesSens

Why does everyone believe that Stewart would be a rental? This guy is phenomenal, he brings a little bit of everything to the game. He’s the type of guy you want in the deep playoff rounds. Look at how valuable Bryan Bickell became to Chicago in the last playoff series.

    • Millennium

Guys like Bickell and Stewart would be the finishing touches on a team that is strong through the regular season and need that extra something after 3 rounds of playoffs (although I’m not sure Stewart even fills that roll, but that’s not the point).
We need guys who can just get us to the playoffs in the first place, and that calls for an entirely different type of player. We aren’t looking for size, or grit, or heart, or energy. We need to be looking for a top-6 scoring winger, and top-4 shutdown D man. Once we have those, then we can cross the 3rd-line character player bridge.

      • A-Train

That’s what I’ve been getting at in earlier comments. I’m the opposite of a prospect-hoarder mentality. But I’m also disappointed in the quality of player we seem to be targeting. I was hoping we’d be aiming higher / thinking bigger…but I’ll wait and see what happens.

        • Millennium

Its the giant elephant in the room/beaten dead horse, but you’ve gotta figure its money keeping BM’s sight so low. He can’t be so blind as to think a Stewart-grade acquisition makes us a contender without some other, much bigger, deal.

          • CUP 2014-15

Like who, what 30+ goal scorer are you thinking that is not a rental. To get someone like that you draft, sign or trade…Lazar/Zbad + Stone + Puemple. sorry but that’s the cost not dollars

Agree with you. The guys we would love to see aren’t available, and if they were, other teams would be in on them too. Now, I’m just kicking a dog while it’s down (because I’ve said it so many times), but Ehrhoff is the right player that would pay huge dividends, IMO. His contract is until the end of time, but the salary and cap hit are very reasonable. For a team that worries about spending, and only has 2 top-4 D today, I would have thought Murray would be all over that. It would take significant pieces for sure.

          • CUP 2014-15

Agreed. D like him don’t become available often. He’s also a lefty and will slide in nicely next to Karl. I believe he is a big part of the talks today and like you hope he is wearing the red white and black soon.
The good thing about his contract is that even at 4m per as a cap hit most of the dollars were paid out upfront. The last 3 or 4 years are at 1m per in real dollars, and actual cap space should not be a problem with the sens.

          • SenaTHOR

If Erhoff comes I think Gryba Methot are back together and that leaves Ceci Cowen Phillips Wiercioch Corvo in the last two postions. I’d say Ceci/???????
Could Phillips and Cowen both be gone?

          • Aaron 2.0

Yeah, and Boro on a 1-way next year too, I think. If Ehrhoff ever landed here, you’re right, we have to clear out some contracts on D. Corvo and Phillips both have expiring contracts. That would have to be part of the solution, IMO.

        • illdistrict

          Michael Cammalleri

        • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Problem is….higher caliber players aren’t regularly available.

Evander Kane is really the only one I can think of that would fit

      • MakesSens

I agree that we need to put in a bigger effort to getting a dman but I’m not going to complain if we get Stewart.

    • Aaron 2.0

Just have to point out that Stewart has not been good in the playoffs.

  • SenaTHOR

    Few points!
If they want to extend Ryan some POSITIVE changes need to be made. This team has got to get better. Why the fk would Ryan want to stay if we are not in contention. Then we lose a PILE.

What are positive changes? Nobody is giving us their stars for our depth guys. At this point many of our stars are playing worse than our depth guys. It is likely rental, high contract, or underachiever trades.

    Who are the non-tradables?
    Karlsson
    Turris
    Ryan
    Mcarthur
    Lazar

Everyone else is available for the right trade.

    • CUP 2014-15

I would include CC and still for now at least Lehner

      • SenaTHOR

None have done enough to make them no trades. Ceci could easily be in a Meyers trade.

    • Dirk-Diggler

Zibanejad, Ceci, Pumpel and Lehner as well…

      • Mat

Not sure Puemple earned that yet..

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I’ve got a feeling T Murray wants to bring one of the coaches from Bingo into Buffalo. He was really high on Richardson.

I wonder if the rumored trade discussions have anything to do with the rumored issues in front office.

    • SenaTHOR

Losing Richardson would be a huge loss!

      • Deadly

Eventually I will happen and we will all be happy for him.

      • Sandy

        Would be a major loss.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

And now Twitter is blowing up with this speculation.

        Ouch

  • Mat

My prediction is that you will see moves from the Sens only after the outdoor game. Murray’s a classy guy, he’s going to let any outgoing players enjoy the event. This would be particularly relevant for players like Michalek and Philips who, its highly anticipated will be moved.

But by the sounds of it, Buffalo might not be ready to deal either..

  • Mat

Turris was never anything special in Phoenix either. Some players just need a change of scenery, or a different style of coaching. Some get screwed by the circumstance around the team. Stewart’s minutes have been reduced yearly in St -louis. That cant be good for confidence Or production…

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Agree completely…which is why if there is a deal to be had there I hope it is Meyers coming our way on D. Not sold on Stewart but would be am extended tryout essentially.

    • aegiszx

Yes, agreed… Not every player works under the system they are currently in. You get the same excuses “Oh, they’re f-cking professionals, they should learn to thrive under any team…” BS. It doesnt work like that in real life. Some times, coaches, players, teammates, leaders, etc dont see eye-to-eye for whatever reason.

I think Cowen is going to be a good player for some team, I just dont think it will be THIS team.

  • SensChirp

Shane Prince a healthy scratch for the BSens tonight. Safe to say he’s on his way out.

    • Moudy Mahfouz

      interesting, is something brewing?

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Not at all surprised he would be a piece

    • Spoons

Are Halak’s and Miller’s Physical done yet? I’m guessing that’s what BUF is waiting for before making more trades.

So Prince out. Hoffman may be in play.

      • Deadly

Don’t mind losing Prince but hoping Stone and Puempel stay.

    • Sensnation

It’ll be sad to see him go, but if it’s him over Puempel who we trade I’m happy. If we lose both, I’m concerned.

      • Aaron 2.0

Pretty different players. I haven’t seen any B-sens hockey, but I remember Puempel being the finisher. Prince is a little more complete all-around, but his ceiling is probably 2nd line. I’d be very sad to see Prince go. But, hopefully the player coming back makes me forget about it!

    • Millennium

Cowen looks like a scratch too, and even though that’s just from bad play, its fun to dream :)

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I have a feeling Cowen has played his last game in a Sens Jersey.

Unsure how I feel… Think if it was a swap with obviously more pieces going both ways for Meyers I’d be OK.

Or Murray will pull another trade no one saw coming out of his hat

        • Millennium

I would be shocked if Cowen is gone to be honest. But IF he is, its gotta be for someone with term, or something. Maybe Ehrhoff? Cowen and Prince for Ehrhoff and Stewart? I’d have to think about that one….

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I would be absolutely floored if it was ehrhoff… Wouldn’t he have to approve the Move?

            Maybe

            Cowen
            Prince
            ….

            For

            Meyers
            Stewart

The dots could be subbed for Moulson and whatever it takes… Although I am not sure I like the trade when he is added to the mix.

          • SenaTHOR

            Last place team why approve?

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Well they asked for a list of 8 teams he would go to, so I assume there is a limited no movement clause

          • Sensnation

Erhoff has a limited no trade clause, already submitted the teams he won’t go to.

          • Aaron 2.0

I don’t think Cowen is moving either. His value is too low. What’s the point moving him now. Erhoff coming back the other way – That’s probably the only thing that would make sense to me. Buffalo has all kinds of time to develop Cowen. Obviously it would take more than a straight-up trade. And, you’d think Buffalo would be concerned about not really having anyone to mentor their young D.

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

If he is moved it is to buffalo… It is the absolute only place that we would get any value.

I was always under the impression that Tim Murray was pretty high on him

          • Aaron 2.0

I definitely agree with you Tcharger. Buffalo is probably the one place that might assign some value to Cowen (w/ T Murray @ the helm, and that team in a ground floor rebuild).

  • Deadly

Boston really, really need a veteran defenseman. Any ideas?

    • Sensnation

      Joe Corvo? ;)

      • Deadly

        That’s a start and…

        • Sensnation

Personally if we could get Loui Eriksson I’d send them Phillips, Corvo and a prospect or pick.

          • Deadly

            Let’s do it.

          • Sandy

Well is a friend of Karlsson’s

      Les trios: Michalek-Spezza-Conacher, MacArthur-Turris-Condra, Hoffman-Zibanejad-Ryan, Hoffman/Kassian-Smith-Neil. #Sens #HeritageClassic

So either Hoffman is listed twice, or Smith is listed twice, or its a blender on the bottom line :p

      • Moudy Mahfouz

        Kassian smith neil…

        • Millennium

Sounds like its Greening on the 4th line with Kassian taking some rushes in his place. That’s pretty standard.

    • Sensnation

Is he going to Buffalo too? Will we recognize our roster after this trade lol

  • Spoons

Prince is from Rochester , NY. Considered a local boy in BUF. If TM manages the team anything like Uncle BM, then he’ll certainly look for a few locals if he can.

  • Millennium

Here’s my question: If we are looking for a winger for Spezza, and we call up Hoffman, why aren’t we trying the two together? I like Hoffman with Zibby and Ryan, but isn’t the whole point here to try and get Giggles rolling again? Playing Spezza with Conacher and Michalek is just more of the same pairings that haven’t worked all season long.

    • Sensnation

Agreed, though perhaps trying to get Conacher going/showcased. Hopefully he does better this time around.

    • Deadly

I think the winger will come by trade and they want to let the young duo of Zbad and Hoffman develop chemistry. At least see if it can translate. Also if they had space would Stone play with Spezza.

Tim Murray staking a claim in Buffalo. Pretty ballsy, but you gotta respect him for owning it.

  • A-Train

Wow. Reading between the lines and looking at the history both Lafontaine and Nolan sound like bad news. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Nolan out soon too.

    • Sandy

      Yeah for Luke Richardson..

  • luckan20

I dont think BM will go for Tyler Myers. It is a rich contract to take. Only possible player Ottawa will take is Ehrhoff. We need to move Greening or Cowen part of the deal. Eugene will never take a contract without one heading the other way. According to K.Weeks of CBC, Phillips will be moved.

    • Deadly

Some of the speculated returns for Phillips are too good to resist.

    • Sensturion

According to the reader gds (guy has some good insight – works for the sens I think), Philips isplaying injured and wouldn’t pass a physical if he was traded.

  • Deadly

    Cowen sitting tomorrow.

    • A-Train

      hooo boy. here we go!

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Good…. Even if it doesn’t mean he is part of a deal… It is about bloody time

      • A-Train

Ironically the typically bad ice in these stadium events would probably help him a bit.

    • Doc

It was said yesterday that he was going to watch from the press box. Not part of a deal.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I am not convinced he isn’t on the table…that being said, Garrioch is a moron posting that 20 minutes ago like it is news.

        • Doc

He’s doing it on purpose to cause a stir. That’s what he does.

People are so hungry for any type of information right now, that they will latch on every little rumour. Twitter is depressing tonight.

  • A-Train

Here’s a thought. I can’t see the Ottawa Senators making a major trade — or really any deal at all — with Toronto or Montreal. It seems crazy, right?

But if it’s Buffalo or Boston…there seems to be no prob.

Kind of wish Tim Murray had got a job in Phoenix.

    • Deadly

With the Ottawa ownership in Phoenix that might of been possible.
      You just want Yandle.

      • A-Train

        Haha. Maybe.

I’m just pointing out the obvious: Doing a deal with Buffalo that involves us sending them young guys with upside has the potential to be very painful for many years. Not quite as soul-destroying as doing a deal like that with say the Leafs could be…but still a bit of a white-knuckler.

Chirp, u gotta be hearing some rumours? Same names I suppose as everywhere. Anything on what Colorado has offered for Phillips? Or which prospects Tim Murray is targeting?

    • SensChirp

Been busy moving all day but like I said below, Prince is as good as gone. Buffalo the likely destination. Sens still after Stewart so I suspect that’s at least part of the deal.
      Moulson and Ehrhoff also mentioned.

      • Doc

Seems there’s still interest in Parenteau. Have you heard anything?

  • luckan20

Even we don’t make the play-offs, it is the best time for us to find some guys who are expandable new homes. BM need to find new homes for Greening, Phillips, Cowen, Michalek (if plans of not signing), Condra (may be), Corvo (if possible) and Prince (thinks highly of himself).
This will give 3-4 roster spots for guys like Stone, Grant, Pageau, Claesson and Borowiecki to make a run at.

    • A-Train

So we can tank and grab McDavid? Adding four rookies to a roster that’s already one of the league’s youngest is a recipe for a historically bad season.

      • Deadly

The voice of reason. You are right but it would be great to clear a couple of spots to be able to promote a couple of B sens that might be ready to continue developing at the NHL level.

  • Gordon Ramsli

I want Greening, Cowen and Prince & pick for Meyers & Stewart from Buffalo

Phillips goes to contender for prospect conditional pick if he resigns?

Michalek should just be offered to Phx for the sake of playing with his brother. He has served us well.

Kassian either flipped for pick or let go at end of season.

Flip our prospect cabinet for new pick at next years draft

    MacArthur – Turris – Stewart
    Conacher – Zibanejad – Ryan
    Hoffman – Spezza – Stone
    Condra – Smith – Neil

    DaCosta/Grant

Lazar will take Spezza’s job at Center in the future

    Meyers – Karlsson
    Methot – Ceci
    Borowiecki – Gryba/PW46

  • Tony

Had a lengthy chat with my brother inlaw today and he mentioned some rumblings that surprised me… it seems that they’re hoping Ottawa don’t deal with Buffalo and become sellers… here’s what opened my eyes
One… Edmonton has interest in Philips. Rumour floating around is Daniil Zharkov plus a second in a future year.
Second… Edmonton are ready to talk about Michalek. They’re hoping to get him on the cheap and want him if salary has to come back to Edmonton in a deal.
Third… Nurse may be available in a larger deal (with other pieces) that would include Philips, Michalek, Cowen, and either Greening/Smith.
Last… Edmonton has been exploring trading their 1st rounder and has let BM it is available (along with other GMs obviously)
Edmonton is under lots of pressure to get some vets in and start winning… might be a busy week (or offseason) for Edmonton

    • Sandy

Why does everyone want Smith traded?

      • Deadly

Earlier his name was mentioned a lot but not so much recently.
He is however a player that has some appeal and value.

      • Aaron 2.0

I don’t necessarily want him traded, Sandy. But if you have to spend to get, I get why his name keeps coming up. A lot of teams could add a player like this. And, I think he’s one of only a handful of players that are living up to expectations this year. So he has value. And, unfortunately you don’t get much value back for free. Although my mom says that the best things in life are free!

  • SensChirp

So if we add together all the names being speculated. Chris Stewart, Matt Moulson and Christian Ehrhoff from BUF. Shane Prince, Mike Hoffman and maybe Matt Puempel from OTT?

That doesn’t seem like enough going Buffalo’s way. Framework of a deal though, perhaps? You can see why everyone is talking potential blockbuster between these two teams though.

    • Tony

I think a D would have to go back to Buff

      • SenaTHOR

        Cowen, Good chance 7/10
        Wiercioch, Fair chance 6/10
        Gryba, Fair chance 5/10
        Methot Some chance 4/10
        Phillips Good chance 7/10
        Ceci, poor chance 2/10
        Boro Fair chance 5/10
        Corvo Fair chance? 6/10
Could be any one except Karlsson.

    • Millennium

The problem I see in that deal is that assuming Moulson walks in July, Ehrhoff adds to our already crowded list of 1-way D contracts (which means domino effect in trades), and Stewart is not enough return to merit a blockbuster.

I like Ehrhoff, and I would like to trade a couple of our spare D men (Gryba could easily be gone, Phillips perhaps. Cowen’s gotta be considered.). But I’d skip the other two if it meant keeping Puempel.

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

So ehrhoff has us on his list then?

I seriously think that is a fact everyone is ignoring

      • SensChirp

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Murray can make a trade “right now” that isn’t just for “right now” though. If Moulson is indeed part of the discussions, Bryan Murray must believe he has a chance at extending him.
Rentals don’t make sense for Ottawa this year.

      • Dirk-Diggler

So are you implying Moulson is the guy?

I have to wonder why Buff would now trade Stewart away when if they could just re-sign Moulson & they would have a pretty good 1st line with Moulson, Girgenson & Stewart. They have two decent goalies & some good young players coming & three 1st rd picks for the 2014 draft. If I’m TM I wouldn’t trade any more players but try to build from what they have now. IMO Ottawa doesn’t have any prospects that are better than what Buffalo already has so what would the purpose of dealing with uncle BM be? It doesn’t make them better, TM now has some decent pieces to build with IMO.

Ottawa on the other hand lacks an identity, they don’t know what kind of team they have. Are they a finese team like the diminutive Habs or are they a big tough team that is hard to play against or something inbetween. Right now they are a non-playoff team looking for answers as to what to do with some of these players & which way they need to go to get better. Team Canada was a big tough defensive team that was hard to play against & should be the model Ottawa follows. But Ottawa has too many small & soft players in their organization that play a finese game who want to make pretty plays & that has not worked for them at all this yr. This team has stagnated all yr long & have not improved. They also don’t look like they will be any better next yr, I’m not sure any trade will change that.

    • iKarly65

Good point, but it might have to do with other variables, like players not wanting to remain in Buffalo, or Murray wanting to build his own team.

They can either draft prospects with their picks or trade those picks/prospects for NHL players.

I imagine Buffalo and Edmonton both have the problem of attracting players, so locking up young guys to long term, inflated deals is key to building, or trading for term.

  • Godless_Lawyer

Any move for a rental will just be throwing good money after bad at this point. Management (and ownership) need to recognize where we are now, instead of chasing whatever expectations we may have had at the beginning of the year. I get that it’s probably hard when you’ve made the moves and invested the time (and money) working towards an expected outcome; but at some point you have to look objectively and be prepared to cut your losses if it’s clear that outcome is getting less and less realistic. We should not be considering rentals. We should be considering some of our players as potential rentals.

  • SensFanInMTL

I just want to say that, I remember reading back in the day of if and when we would pull a blockbuster type of a deal, Puempel’s name was often tossed around as part of a deal. Safe to say that everyone now realized how much of a pure goal scorerer he is, being 2nd in Bingo’s scoring behind Hoffman.

The day Tim became GM and left Ottawa was a mistake of a lifetime. My statement will be reversed if Lazar & Puempel are to remain apart of the Sens team for years to come. God I have the worst feeling about Wednesday. Please go by quickly Wednesday!
