When the Ottawa Senators called out Francis Perron‘s name in the 7th round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, it wasn’t exactly an eye-catching selection.
He was the 190th player selected in that year’s draft and was at best considered a bit of a project. An undersized forward with less than a point a game in the QMJHL. Expectations were pretty low.
Fast forward two years and Francis Perron has solidified himself as one of the top prospects in the organization.
For those of you that are just catching up, Perron put together a terrific regular season with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. As Captain of the top team in the QMJHL, Perron racked up points at an incredible rate all year. He finished the year with 41 goals, 67 assists and 108 points. In just 62 games.
His spectacular regular season earned him the award for league MVP.
And he’s kept it rolling in the playoffs too.
Last night, his Huskies closed out the QMJHL final with relative ease, cruising to a 7-2 win in the series clinching game. In 18 playoff games, Perron racked up an incredible 33 points and won the Guy Lafleur Trophy, handed out annually to the QMJHL’s playoff MVP. Perron is just the 8th player in league history to win both MVP awards in the same season.
Not bad for a 7th round pick.
Next up for Perron- an appearance in the Memorial Cup. The Huskies play their first game of the tournament next Saturday.
