NHL Releases Regular Season Schedule

The NHL off season hasn’t even kicked into high gear yet and we already have the next season to look forward to.

Today, the NHL released the schedule for the 2014/2015 season.

The Ottawa Senators will open their season on October 9, 2014 against the Nashville Predators.  They’ll play their first home game of the season one week later when they host the Colorado Avalanche at the Canadian Tire Centre.

The start of the season is just 109 days away . Or about 2626 hours. Or 157,584 minutes. Or 9,445,070 seconds. But who’s counting?

A full breakdown of the Senators’ schedule is available on the team website at the link below.

  • Pasky

Only 4 afternoon games compared to 11 so there’s a huge improvement. Does anyone remember how many back-to-backs we had last season? We’ve got 12 this year, 5 of them both on the road.

    • Pasky

Answered my own question, 13 total 6 both on the road last year, so I guess they didn’t fix the amount of back to backs that much.

      • Sandy

Every team has quite a few back to backs.

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Back to back are pretty common… The fun think to look at is how many times we will face divisional rivals on the second night of a back to back

      • Sandy

They have a 2nd game in a back to back against the Leafs but I don’t think they have that situation against the Habs.

      • Zelle

It was bad for that last year…

  • I’m just sayin’

only 4 afternoon home games – YEE HAW

  • peetypuck

25 of their home games will be played on either Thursday or Saturday with 7 more on Friday and Sunday. That’s great.

    • Sandy

Yes — I like that. Saturday nights are for hockey.
The only thing I’m sad about is no Florida trip in March. They go there in Oct & Nov. That sucks for me, as I love those Florida trips but at the end of winter not at the beginning.

      • peetypuck

        Try Carolina this year…March 17.

        • Sandy

OR I could get rich between now and the end of Feb and do the California trip.

        • Sandy

Actually I obviously don’t see well.
They are in Sunrise Mar 29th., then to Detroit for the 31st and back to Tampa for Apr 2.
Just gives me more time to shop and tour.

  • Sandy

3 home games against the f’in Leafs this year. But get this 2 of those games are on Wednesday and one on Saturday.
Maybe those Wednesday games the buses stay the hell in TO.

    • peetypuck

Shut the highway down “due to construction” on those three nights. he he

  • NewSensFan

Hey Chirp. I think it’s about time I follow my home town for a full 82 game season this season, so I think I’m in for a treat haha… #IsItOctoberYet

    • SensChirp

      Ha. Welcome aboard!

  • AutoTurris

Karlsson next for the C? Not surprised on the front that most young teams give it to their young superstars, but I get the impression that everyone in the locker room thinks he’s a bit weird; I mean, lets face it, he is weird. Is he leader material?

    • PraiseAlfie11

Honestly now, how do you know he’s weird?

      • aegiszx

I’m sorry, have you seen his tumblr? He’s weird… Like he’s definitely a litttttle bit strange lol

    • I’m just sayin’

So your calling King Karlsson names.
Is that you Don Brennan ?

      Captain – Shmaptain – WHO CARES ?

Bobby Orr was never an NHL Captain.

    • Zelle

Nothing wrong with being weird. I’m weird and I lead projects at work and represent my department on trips from time to time. Weird is awesome!

    • AutoTurris

I’m just worried that Senator’s captaincy has turned into a sort of Defense Against the Dark Arts situation… These last two years we’ve lost both our captains and I don’t want Karl to be next

  • Sandy
  • Floridasensfan

Hell yes Karlsson for Captain, Crazy that the sun is such a rag bashing our players.
I would not even let them talk to our players some of the things they have said.
    Banned from the CTC

    • KJ

Remember that the media are the “voice” of the fans, and are therefore absolved of what they write or report. :)

  • Max2166

I just checked out the schedule. One good thing is there will not be very many afternoon games. Go Sens Go!!!

  • Max2166

Erik Karlsson would be an excellent choice as Captain. I do not want The Big Rig nor Neil getting the C. My only other for the C would be Kyle Turris.

    • Sandy

Go with 4 A’s next season. We’ll see who steps up.

      • AutoTurris

That’s what I’m advocating for, many As on the team, can’t see a clear cut C

        • Jakester

Put TUrris as Captain, it will remove the bad taste from our mouths!

          • KJ

It doesn’t matter who is Captain. We will rip him down anyways.

  • Phoenix

I’d go with McArthur as Captain. He really showed what he can do at both ends of the ice last year with his 200 ft game.

  • 383

Don Brennen is the definition of a hack. Has anyone heard this guy fill in on TSN 1200 the odd time? He can’t even read a damn email out loud. He’s an illiterate d-bag that probably couldn’t get a job anywhere else, other than the Ottawa Sun.

He and his cronies are jokes and should NEVER be referred to as sports journalists.

If I were EK65, I would Darryl Sutter his ass in interviews and give one word answers until he fucked right off.

    EK or Turry for captain.

    GO SENS GO!

  • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Spezza will soon be turning in that target that has always been on his back. Looks like Erik Karlsson is next in line http://m.ottawasun.com/2014/06/22/ottawa-senators-superstar-erik-karlsson-could-be-frontrunner-to-follow-spezza-as-captain

Predicted this months ago…and Brennan isn’t the first one ive seen say things like this, heard TONNES of fans already calling for his head.

    • MoeDozer

I don’t get why many still give him attention by reading his crap. worst part are I know plenty of fans that truly believe him and other shit the Sun come up with.. do people need a reminder of calling karlsson “a garbage pick”

      • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I have never understood why people read it. I mean I do occasionally if I am bored, and usually am ticked off before I make it three paragraphs in

  • MoeDozer

The schedule isnt too bad. as far as divisional rivals go, we play leafs on the 2nd night of a back to back twice (once home, other in toronto). and do the same with Florida and Tampa. and Montreal only once on 2nd nighter.
    with only 7 afternoon games.

    non NHL related:

im glad to see many here are following the beautiful game, the world cup and noticed Chirp become a new fan.

Been a great day, sens released a decent schedule and my home country Algeria become first African nation to score 4 goals in world cup history. bring it on russia!

    • Zelle

It seems to be the case where OTT faces TO on two+ ends of back to backs but TO never has that against OTT :/

      • MoeDozer

got curious and searched leafs sched. funny enough they too face us twice this season on a 2nd night of a back to backer.
as for rest of the rivals, they face the red wings twice in 2 days. so no advantage there.
they only face tampa on a 2nd night of back to backer..the rest of the rivals are spread

so we face our div. rivals a total of 7 times on a 2nd nighter. leafs 3

        • Zelle

ooh ok cool, ty for the research :)

    • son of a Diefenbaker

“I’m glad to see many here are following the beautiful game”

Yeah – I’m not a soccer fan but this is sure worth watching
so00oo many teams going “full throttle” – like they’re playing in
a Stanley Cup 7th game or a Super Bowl

best fan costumes so far ?
France’s musketeers and USA’s Teddy Roosevelt

  • son of a Diefenbaker

Don Brennan needs to learn that Erik Karlsson is not Ottawa’s version of Justin Bieber

  • Max2166

Sportsnet will televise 28 Sens game. So Sens Army will be watching most of the games on TSN, which I think is great news.

    • Sandy

Absolutely. I don’t think Sportsnet gives a damn about the Sens anyway, at least the people they hire don’t. Kypreos, Cole, and rumored to be Glenn Healey just to name a few.

      • Zira1

Just another reason I must again subscribe to “NHL Gamecenter”. Although I like listening to Friedman and Oake I admit to disliking Healey and Kypreos enough that I will watch on Gamecenter instead. Anything for Sens games without the Toronto bias.

      • Max2166

I rather listen to Duthie, Mackenzie and Dreger on TSN. It will be interesting to find out who will do the play by play and analyst on TSN since Dean Brown and Denis Potvin will not be doing the games. No fan of Kypreos, Cole nor Healey. I think they have the Leafs their back pockets.

    • peetypuck

That’s 1/3 of the 82 game schedule. The Sens will have to be compensated for that many games. Normally teams only get 1/30th of the revenues from nationally broadcast games.

      • Sandy

I would think that would be split evenly with the Cdn teams getting a bigger cut?

        • peetypuck

I hope so. It wouldn’t be fair to lose that much TV revenue and then be forced to share the nationally broadcast (Rogers) revenues equally with all the American teams that show most of their games (and get paid directly) on local TV.

        • peetypuck

You realize that all the Canadian national broadcast revenue is divided up equally between all 30 NHL teams. It was the same when CBC had the national broadcast contract. US teams will receive 23/30ths of the $432 million a year that Rogers pays to broadcast Canadian games. Minus whatever the Canadian teams will get compensated for losing so many extra games from their local TV broadcast schedules this year.

          • Sandy

No idea how it works except it was reported the Sens would get about 16M. Then add the 30-40M from TSN and Melnyk gets close to 50M in TV revenue and he’s not raising the budget.

          • peetypuck

National TV broadcast revenues are paid to the NHL. The NHL then divides the money equally between all 30 teams. Each team receives an equal share or 1/30th. This year Rogers has also bought the rights to Sunday games which were broadcast on local TV in years past. That means the Canadian teams lose their revenue from Sunday games now. They should be compensated for that loss of revenue.
Local TV broadcast revenues are paid directly to each team. They don’t share it with other teams.

          • KJ

So…? You calling him cheap? I am glad we are not the Rangers paying out Richards for 50+ million after 3 seasons!

          • Mr Hockey

Cheap or absolutely frivoulous.. there’s no in between eh?

  • PraiseAlfie11

So if Melnyk changed his mind about the sunday afternoon games, maybe he’s also changed his mind about cost per point (aka moneypuck)?

    • son of a Diefenbaker

We can only hope that Uncle Eugene no longer has Billy Beane on his speed dial

  • WaitingSince92

Schedule? Can’t you just make the Spezza trade happen already, Chirp?

    • SensChirp

      This week

  • peetypuck

If Murray doesn’t get a 1st round draft pick this week it’s going to be a boring draft for the Senators this coming Friday.

    • spoons

i’d say any trade involving the sens would still make the draft exciting

      • peetypuck

I didn’t say the draft wouldn’t be exciting. It just won’t be very exciting for the Sens with the picks we have left.

    • Sandy

A lot of the ‘experts’ are expecting a lot of activity around trades during the draft.

      • peetypuck

I wonder if Spezza will get traded during the 1st round of the draft? That would be exciting.

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I honestly hope he doesn’t unless it’s a top 2 pick involved, if not wait on the trade

    • Hax

True enough – but I’d rather be a little bored this week than see Murray force a trade for a pick rather than get the best return he can.

I still think the trade happens in July.

  • Jakester

Did we trade him yet(are we there yet, are we there yet)? Sorry was in the car with one of my little guys today!

    • peetypuck

Sorry Jake but you have to wait until Christmas to open your presents.

      • Jakester

        Or draft day you mean?

        • peetypuck

Draft day is Christmas for hockey fans.

  • Jakester

NEWSDAY: Arthur Staple reports NY Islanders GM Garth Snow is willing to trade his first-round pick (fifth overall) for an NHL-ready player who can help the club now.

Come on Spezz New York is a great place to play hockey! 2C behind Tavares would be great! Lol

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Meh outside the top 3 I’d be interested in

      • ProfessorPower

Okposo and Strome would be nice

        • Jakester

Yeah , they have a deep talent pool.

    • peetypuck

It’s Garth Snow. Maybe we could trade Ales Hemsky for the #5 pick.

    • A-Train

Islanders are moving to Brooklyn soon. It’s become a great place for a young family, especially if you are very rich. Islanders made a smart move locking up Halak. Honestly, I think that franchise won’t be on No Trade lists that much longer.

  • sprucesens

    interesting post on hockeybuzz.

we could almost flesh out our entire team under 24. just add in ryan and macA and we’re set

    • SensFanInMTL

Yeah for real. What happened to Mac & Bobby? Anyhow, hockeybuzz or not, it knows the display pic. Surely it’s not for nothing eh?

  • Mr Hockey

I realise it’s a long shot but if anyone finds a stream for the draft on Friday please post it!

    • Sensturion

Doesn’t TSN usually stream the draft on their website?

  • A-Train

Karlsson for Captain is the obvious choice. He displays that intensity and competitiveness we hope for in a Captain. And when he’s “on”, he’s a great quote after the game too.

But somewhere in the murk of Brennan’s article there’s some truth though: Karlsson is a quirky character, and one of a new breed of athletes who are thoroughly immersed in social media. That can be a good thing. But is Ottawa ready for a guy without a filter?

  • FBP

I’m ready for a trade. Or at least for the Leafs to sign someone to a ridiculous contract or something.

  • SensChirp
  • FistsofNeil25

Is this the week that Spezz gets dealt?
