Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

As we turn the calendar to 2014, I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you for helping to make the SensChirp community one of the best you’ll find anywhere online.

From humble beginnings almost five years ago, SensChirp has grown from the occasional anonymous tip to a respected source for Ottawa Senators news and discussion.  It goes without saying but that would not be possible without your continuing loyalty and support.  The site itself has evolved significantly over that time. The most recent and most significant upgrade came this past year as we made a number of changes designed at improving the reader experience here on the site.  We could not be happier with the results!

It goes without saying but 2013 will obviously go down as the most important year of my life.  Mrs. Chirp and I welcomed our first daughter (and a future Sens fan!) into the world this past November and the kind words and support we received from loyal readers during that time meant a lot to both of us.

2014 figures to be an equally exciting year both for me personally and for the site.  We have a few things in the works this year that we think will continue to improve the reader experience here on SensChirp.

So again, thanks to all of you for your support in 2013 and all the best to you and yours in 2014.

Happy New Year!!

Happy new year to all. Here’s to the Sens continuing to roll into the new year and giving us something to cheer for until the snow is gone. Congrats on the arrival of your daughter Chirp, mine are all grown up with little ones of their own. Nothing like children to teach us what really matters in this crazy world. God bless. Stay safe everyone and GSG…

Here’s my New Years Senators wishes in no particular order

Spezza and Michalek miraculously turn their seasons around and perform the way they did 2 years ago
Craig Anderson builds on his recent moment and returns to the goalie we opted to keep instead of trade
Conacher continues to build on recent momentum and solidifies himself as a legit top 6 threat

  • LeafsSux

Happy New Year to you as well!!!! Go Sens Go!!

  • Jacques

Happy new Year Chirp to you and your lovely family! We have our differences of opinion on certain players but one thing is for sure we ARE fans of this great TEAM! All the best to everyone !

  • Mitchell

Happy New Years too all!! Um has anyone popped over to see that Tim Gleason will be a maple leaf? I thought at one point his was coming to us last year

  • Sandy

Happy New Year to Chirp and his family… and to the ‘Chirpers’ on this site.
Hoping the Sens start the new year on fire… and get into a playoff spot…
Chirp? Do you think Lupul gets a suspension for that crosscheck to Eave’s neck/face? That he got 2 min is disgusting. That was a deliberate attempt to injure..

  • Sandy

Much better 2nd period that the first… Wings outshooting Leafs 18-6.. Watch Toronto, with the horseshoe up their ass that they have, will score first..

  • Sandy

Bernier is saving the Leafs’ ass today…

  • QSenFan

As usual, laffs getting calls their way and then tie it up.

    • Sandy

As I said.. they have a horseshoe up their ass.. Bounces ALWAYS go there way. I guess the hockey gods favour them…

      • ZibbyFan

The hockey gods have to favour them…they can’t do it on their own!

        • Sandy

          Good point..

        • s3nsfan

That and the hockey gods hate listening to the incessant leaf whining.

  • Sandy

I don’t watch CBC unless I have to. NBC so much more professional and UNbiased..

  • Sandy

    SOB — 3 pt game..

  • Richard Gough

Here is a trade thought Heatly would be happy with this deal
    Sens
    Spezza

    For
    Wild
    Granlund
    Ballard (salary dump )

  • T K

Happy for Alfie that he got the opening goal but couldn’t he have worked a bit harder to win this in regulation? Now it’s a 3 point game making Sens one point further away from playoffs..

  • SENSible

No Bobby Ryan on Team USA!

    • Mike

What is Team USA stupid?!?! He 24th in the league in scoring and is 5th in scoring amoung american born players and 11th overall in goals scored this season whoever is picking that team must be high or incredibly stupid

      • SENSible

On the plus side at least he won’t get hurt and he should be fresh for the post Olympic period.

        • LeafsSux

How in the heck would he get hurt in the Olympics? It’s like an all star game.. Cant imagine whats running through his head right now.. :/

          • Sens-fan-in-mtl

Short memory? Hasek screwing us doesn’t ring a bell?

          • s3nsfan

Apparently you don’t remember Dominik Hasek in a Sens uniform

          • LeafsSux

Hasek played 14 yrs in the league before we took him for Lalime.. He lasted 2 lackluster years after that with the Wings is all im saying. Olympic hockey to me is boring as hell.. The nostalgic part of the game is no longer there. I live an hour from Lake Placid and remember the buzz going around in that little town during those games and it will never be the same as long as the pros are playing.. Just my honest opinion..

          • s3nsfan

Here I’ll simplify it for you

Dominic Hasek went to the Olympics while a sens player. He got injured and never played again.

          • LeafsSux

Hid did play again.. 2 seasons with the wings… You don’t have to simplify anything to me… End of story

          • s3nsfan

Dude you asked “how in the heck would he get hurt in the olympics” Hasek got hurt in the olympics and never finished that season.

    • Sandy

Apparently members of the selection committee were ‘too nervous’ about selecting him. What?

      http://espn.go.com/olympics/hockey/story/_/id/10195703/how-us-hockey-team-bound-sochi-olympics-was-named
But they select Jimmy Howard.. when both Cory Schneider & Ben Bishop have much better stats. Now the 3rd stringer most likely won’t play… but have they ever heard of injuries?

And Orpik is on the team… and not Keith Yandle?
Wow.. I hope they miss the medal round… would serve them right.
So they have all of this speed.. but if you can’t put the puck in the net at the other end… how good is that speed?

      • aegiszx

To be fair though, Howard is much more experienced than those two. Don’t get me wrong, Bishop is a great goalie, having a great year, but he’s also still relatively new, and inexperienced. He doesn’t know what its like to play on the big stage since he has really just started his career finally after many delays…

        • LeafsSux

Everyone knows you go with the hot hand.. This dude is a stud this year and deserves it..

        • Aaron 2.0

I actually think that’s the perfect reason to take Bishop. The 3rd string in not likely to play! It’s the perfect spot to take an inexperienced goaltender if you think he will continue to be in conversation for future international teams. It gives him the experience, and lets him learn something about playing at that level. Personally, I think Bishop will be a good goalie for TB for a long time. If I were picking that team, I’d want him to have this experience now.

    • Sicilian

      Their loss, our gain

  • Mike

Well looks like the Sens will miss the playoffs this year because the Leafs and Wings will make the playoffs this year too little to late for the Sens I’m afraid looks pretty bleak at this point and what a waste it is pointless for the Leafs to even make the playoffs because they won’t get past the first round if they have to play Pittsburgh or Boston what a waste of a season well there is always next year and besides the rookies on this team should be over their sophomore slumps by then and this team will be able to at least make the playoffs and contend for a cup

    • Sandy

The Leafs had better hope they are not in 8th place at the end of the season.. IF they are tied in the standings.. all of those SO wins are gone.. Their ROWs are lower than those teams chasing them… including the Sens.. They could miss out… How sweet would that be.

      • Aaron 2.0

I agree, the Leafs are really not a very good hockey team this year. I’ve always had a problem with the SO. But, even more, I hate that not all games are awarded equal points. How can one game be worth 2 points, and another game be worth 3 just because either team couldn’t get it done in regulation. I think i’d have a lot less issues with the SO in general if regulation wins were worth 3 points. If you don’t get it done in regulation, the winner gets 2 and the loser 1 point. Apply those points, and we’d have a much better representation of how good teams have actually played. Teams records would not nearly be as over- or under- inflated based on the SO. And, there would be much more incentive to not sit back on a tie game in the 3rd.

        • karlssens

The 3 point reward for a regulation win is actually a great idea.

          • Aaron 2.0

Thanks, i’d like to say it was my idea, but it’s been floated around by a lot of other people. I think the hesitation of it to gain any traction is that 3 points for a win is a little too “soccer-y” for a lot of old-school hockey types in charge of the NHL. It just really drives me mad that one game can be worth 2 points (regulation win) while another game is worth 3 points (OT or SO). This basically says that some games are more important than others. To me, every season game should be weighted the same. They are all equally important. Why reward teams for not being good enough to win in 60 minutes.

But, the NHL does all kinds of crazy things. Like 2 uneven conferences. Sigh…

          • Sandy

Yeah.. that would not be so bad. I don’t know why the NHL doesn’t go to that.. But anyway.. I think after this season the shootout is gone in favour of 4 on 4 OT… then 3 on 3 OT.. or a tie if no winner.

    • LeafsSux

That hurt my brain just reading it…..

Hopfully this new year will bring better luck for the Senators!
Will the Senators be able to get into the playoffs?

  • Andersonfan41

Just wondeing will the Senators be able to
squeek into the playoffs or get into the playoffs
    in this new year?

    • PraiseAlfie11

Yes. I actually like what I’ve seen for the past while, and they’re getting better. A .800 team will gain 4 points over a .600 team every 10 games. Theres 40 games left. They won’t catch Boston, but they can certainly catch Detroit and Toronto.

  • jess

    Great job Chirp!

  • Roar…

Callahan and Stepan over Ryan? That’s just atrocious. What a crock of shit.

  • aegiszx

It sucks that Ryan didn’t make the cut. Hopefully he uses it as fuel, but you can never be sure. Knowing how good of a player you are, and what youre capable of… knowing that you arent ‘good enough’ would definitely dampen his mood. Seriously, kids do dream of representing their countries on THE biggest stage…

    • PraiseAlfie11

Purely selfish, but I’m glad he’s not going to the Olympics. Domenik Hasek says what?

      • aegiszx

And what about the positives? What about all the players who win a gold medal, and then use that as a spring board to their cup run? Luongo, Toews, Sid (albiet he won the Cup before he won the Gold), Doughty, etc.

        • PraiseAlfie11

Again, purely selfish to say, but hopefully he sees this as an insult and it fuels his desire to prove them wrong.

Sucks for him, good for the Senators.

          • aegiszx

I hope so too! But again, look at Spezza.

True, two completely different players, but I’ve always wondered what if Spezza had a crack at Team Canada, would he take his skill to another level? Not sure… but at the end of the day, those Team Canada players, all 23+ of them, are more than just elite players, they’re all a special breed of players (and of course nearly all of them are captains), and I guess Spezza just never could be that ‘truly generational/elite’ talent. I’m not holding my breath that ‘this time’ he’ll show them, something thats always said every time he has been left off the roster and of course he’s never rebounded or has gone on a tear…

However, for the guys that DO go like Karl or Lehner, I hope they come back with a crazy intense drive that pushes this team into the playoffs.

  • luckan20

Shocking to see Ryan is not part of the USA Team line up. I thought Ben Bishop will get a shot too.

  • Aaron 2.0

No Ryan or Okposo for USA. I really don’t get leaving off these 2 guys. I think their current roster has some trouble scoring goals this year in Sochi.

    • Aaron 2.0

On the flip side for us, the US selection committee has labelled him a lazy skater. He’s not a strong skater, but I don’t see how anybody can call him lazy. Maybe this slight helps us sign him for a few less $.

  • Sandy

Real shocking to see no Ryan on Team USA considering he played in the last Olympics..
Mr. Poile and his selection committee should realize this is a sprint not a marathon.. and goals do matter. They can have all the speed they want… but if you can’t score.. what’s the point.
I hope Ryan does use this as motivation…

    • Aaron 2.0

The only thing I can think of that would justify not selecting him is that I think his game is much better suited for the smaller rink (just bc his skating is really his weakest skill-set in an otherwise very rounded set of elite skill-sets). But, man you look at the names included that made it, and think exactly what you wrote. They need to score goals against elite D cores & elite G. He sure could help do that, especially on one of the PP units…

  • Jacques

“He is not intense. That word is not in his vocabulary,” Burke says. “It’s never going to be in his vocabulary. He can’t spell intense.”

    • Jacques

Well Bobby Ryan, I hope this will motivate you for the next 7-8 years in a senators uniform. You are intense in my eyes, luv the way you play hockey! With number 7 and 65 you will rack up big numbers year after year! To hell with Hockey USA and to hell with Burke the blowhard who proves again that he can’t identify what it takes to be a good player! What a jackass!

    • Sandy

That was completely inappropriate… Burke had him as a rookie playing under Carlyle.. not exactly the type of player to play in a defensive system… a la Turris..
Burke should learn to keep his big yap shut.
He also said he should not have listened to his scouts and taken Ryan at 2nd overall.. but taken Jack Johnson..
      What a stupid fool.
I really hope USA falls on it’s face. Poile doesn’t know how to build a team.. and you also have the old Atlanta Thrashers GM.. Waddell in the decisions as well.. as others..
Mike Modano took to twitter not understanding how he is not on the team either…

      • Jacques

Cuz he plays in a Ottawa now Sandy, it has Burkie all freaked out! another chance to get back at the Sens.

  • Jacques

TSN2 right now best football game I’ve seen all year central Florida 28 Baylor 20 at the half, Fiesta bowl worth a watch a real track meet.

  • Mat

Okposo and Ryan are currently #2 and #5 in NHL scoring for American-born players with solid numbers. Both productive on shitty teams this year. Those are the kinds of decisions that will either haunt the management team – if/when they lose, or will make them look like geniuses if they win. We’ll have to wait and see… In the meantime, I feel bad for Bobby and I hope he gets a hatty tomorrow night vs Jets. Get angry BOBBY!

    • Sandy

Too much bias on the selection committee… How in the hell a puck moving D.. very good skater and on ice vision in Yandle is left off in favour of Orpik?
Other teams forwards are going to have a heyday with that D after Shattenkirk and Suter pairing.

      • Tooks

And isnt Orpik out with a concussion? baffling…even if he was healthy…

  • Tooks

Really liked the way they presented the whole Team USA thing at the Classic, hopefully Canada does something similar and not just plaster the names on TV…
