Hammond Signs Three Year Contract

Nothing like a little Senators’ news to get you through a quiet day in May.

This morning, the Ottawa Senators announced they have signed goaltender Andrew Hammond to a three year extension that will see him earn an average of $1.3 million a season. $1.2 mil in year one, $1.35 mil in the second year and $1.5 million in the final year of the contract.  Andrew Hammond was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.

Mentioned this on Twitter but this is a little more expensive than what I was expecting and probably a year longer than I would have guessed but still a good contract for both sides.  Hammond will be on the books for a cap hit of $1.3 million a season which is quite reasonable for a back up goaltender.

And make no mistake about it, Andrew Hammond is going to be this team’s back up goalie next season.  It started with the signing of Matt O’Connor a few weeks ago and this signing is another indication that the Senators will be trading a goalie this summer.

The Robin Lehner rumours started well before the emergence of Hammond and the signing of O’Connor and will only pick up steam now that Hammond has been locked up for a few more years.  Going to be an interesting summer in the crease.
