Goal of the Year Candidate from Hemsky

  • Dirk-Diggler

To all the posters on here… I hope some of you attend games as well as watch them on TV. The Hemsky goal was unreal and even better live. I feel lucky that I was able to be there to see it.

I’ve been a season ticket holder since 05 and I wish more people would stick with the team through thick and thin. Last night there was maybe 14,000 people there. It’s got to be deflating to the team to see an empty building.
Tickets are as low as $25 though season tickets! C’mon most people can afford that. This team will be better when Melnyk sinks money into it, well he needs us to support the team in order to get a full bank account.
We get a bad name because we are fickle! Last night the guy behind me was just trashing Spezza the whole night. I wanted to tell him to shut the F up! If you think you can do better then lace em up and get on the ice. See what happens. Let’s show some support for these guys that have given us so much in the past and not destroy them for one terrible year

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Have a hard time agreeing that fans aren’t going due to being fickle… I have in some capacity or another had season tickets, be them mine, my dad’s, my father in laws, works since I watched us beat Montreal in our first game at the civic center.

Next year will be my first time without Barring something completely unforeseen. There have been a hell of a lot worse years than this when we started.

That being said that hemsky goal was absolutely unbelievable

    • MB

I was there, the goal was worth the time and money it costs to attend. That said the Sens are supported pretty well even through down years like this, laying the blame on the fans by saying “it has to be deflating to the team”? Really, you are going to put that on the people who watch every game and cheer for the Sens and only the Sens? Please, get real. The fans are the least of the Sens concerns this year because as far as I could tell last night that crowd was pretty decent for a game that meant nothing in late March, hell they were chanting Hemsky’s name.

As for the guy trashing Spezza, he paid his money he can say whatever he wants. Saying “lets see you do better” is pretty weak though because I would bet the guy sitting behind you hasn’t made 50 million dollars playing a sport that is funded by the type of people sitting directly behind you. There are expectations and Spezza for a decade has failed to meet them for the most part. People keep waiting and those same people will continue to wait.

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

What people need to remember or realize is that our Team is just now starting to get some generational fans, fans that grew up from birth sens fans are now having little Susie and Johnny baby sens fans.

It will get better… With more die hard… It just takes time

    • Zelle

I bought my cousin’s baby (Leafs fan) a Sens onesie. It didn’t take :(

  • senate19

I know this isn’t on topic (re: Hemsky goal), but I wanted to get my two cents in.

Lehner’s lost all his confidence – that much is clear. Last night he was really deep in the crease as Potvin pointed out. He’s either going to have to work through this, or start over next year – someone mentioned bringing another goalie to camp to push him, and it might take that.

I do think this year was bad, of course, and I can see big changes in the off season. Probably at the draft. Murray will have to make some game-changing moves because he can’t risk losing Spezza and Ryan for nothing. If Melnyk is still owner and we’re still on a budget, they can simply not afford to resign these guys at increases to their current salaries.

I can see them shopping Spezza and / or Ryan for 1sts in this year’s draft. Go with Turris and Zibby, bring in Andy for a couple more years, go out and send a D package for another #1D.

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Why the hell would you move either for a pick in this draft…. MAYBE a 2015 1st… But this year I don’t think I’d even move Philips for a pick in this year’s first

      • senate19

Well, again, going back to earlier this year with the rumors of wanting a first back for this year’s draft – but I do agree with you, draft picks for sure, likely next year would be wisest.

    • stone169

Truth is, if the defence would play a little bit tougher in front of Lehner instead of just letting guys walk in a do whatever they wanted, he might not be having a confidence issue right now.

      • zBernatchez

Agreed I don’t know how many times night and in and night out you see both defencemen in the same corner or leaving the man in front the net alone…didn’t they learn not to do this in peewee?

        • Sens613

2 or 3 games in a row we let in a goal in the first minute of the game over a bad turnover and giving up an odd man rush.

  • SensChirp

    On the Fan base…

I said it a couple posts ago but for all the talk about the defence, the forwards, the Coaching taking a step back this season, so too have the fans.

Now I know a lot of that has to do with the Alfredsson departure and Melnyk’s constantly crying poor but this fan base had made some serious progress over the past few seasons. After the All Star Game, the Alfie Countdown, the noise after the Turris goal, the #PeskySens stuff- this fan base was starting to develop a real swagger. Winning helps, obviously.

But this season has been a HUGE step back. Not only is the building rarely full but it seems like the attitude of fans has shifted from support to criticize. Now again, I acknowledge that this has been a brutal season and it’s not realistic to expect the same energy from the fan base but still, if we are going to point fingers at every other issue with the organization, make sure we take time to point the finger at ourselves too.

    • Dirk-Diggler

Yes… This is what I wanted to say originally…
We need to have our players backs, not stab them in it!

      • SensChirp

It’s not that we “need” to. There’s no right way to be a fan. But there are certainly better ways.

        • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Maybe they should ban the idiot RSU and their holier than thou bully tactics

          • SensChirp

They have the right idea, I think. Just maybe not going about it the best way. A group of passionate fans is a good thing.

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I whole heartedly disagree… They are a bunch of clowns.

          • MB

Complete morons who know little about the game

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I basically put them into the same boat as soccer hooligans… Just in the RSU case they are a bunch of lovers that live in mommy and daddies basements

          • MB

Pretty much man. I’ll give them credit though, I don’t think there is a collective group of people who have designed better franchises in NHL14 than them. Wait until NHL15 comes out for PS4… you ain’t seen nothing yet.

        • MB

Yes because a standing ovation for a player is an awful way to show you are a fan… Hemsky got one.

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

            He got two hahah

          • SensChirp

I think you’re missing the point. It’s certainly not all fans but rather a general comment on the fan base. And like I said above, there are valid reasons for it.

          • zBernatchez

The fans that criticize IMO are the fans who haven’t been cheering for 10+ years, watch every sens game. It’s usually the government workers who bring their book to the game and leave with 5 mins left in the game that criticize every move, sure it’s frustrating but we can’t win every year.

        • thirstytraveller

I’d rather see a lively building with fans being rowdy than a building where you can hear a pin drop. I hold seasons to TFC and while there are supporters sections where those fans stand the whole game and sing songs or taunt opposing players the other sections have fans seated but making sufficient noise to add to the environment of the sporting event.
To force shy people into being someone they are not isn’t fair, but to critique supporters groups for being to rowdy is equally unfair. I agree with Chirp – there’s no right way to be a fan. The important thing is were pulling for the same team. If we can make our building loud and hard for other teams to play in all the better.

    • MB

The fans of Ottawa even as close back as last year in the playoffs were insane. CTC was the loudest building in the playoffs and yet we are ripping on the fans or even questioning how good the fans actually are?

Melnyk basically spit in Alfie’s face and a lot of people took that personally. Mix that in with him saying this team is on a budget, I am still losing money, etc, etc, etc, that kills the fans. All fans in any sport have is hope and that has been taken away from the city of Ottawa. So BS on you and anyone else calling out the fans in any kind of way, Ottawa has shown their true colours time and time again and Melnyk has come out in full force to show is.

The only voice fans have is making statements by not paying for a garbage product, yelling loudly about who they want, when they want after they pay their money. No realistic person or fan would have faith or hope in this team unless they are blind followers which it seems perhaps a couple of you are.

Hell the fans there were chanting and cheering last night in a loss in a game that means close to nothing and yet the fans are the problem? They got more support last night then they earned or deserved on any level.

      • SensChirp

Like I said, there are completely justifiable reasons for it. I am as guilty of it as anyone else.

        • MB

When apathy sets in, that’s when you worry. If people are booing, bitching, crying, complaining, cheering, yelling, posting on Sens chirp your fans care. If this site goes dead, people stop showing up, etc, etc that’s when you worry. I am glad people are negative because there is absolutely nothing to be positive about aside from a player here and a game there.

People pay their money, they have the right to say whatever they want about whoever they want (to an extent). I would rather have 17,000 assholes who care vs 1,000,000 who don’t.

          • Dadzsun

Long time reader, first time poster – and it was MB who brought me out of the wood work. I couldn’t have written his two posts above any better.

Sens ownership/execs, if you’re reading this, the two key lines are:
            1) “… All fans in any sport have is hope and that has been taken away from the city of Ottawa…” and;
            2) “…The only voice fans have is making statements by not paying for a garbage product”.

I’m 100% convinced that the GM/coaching/team moral/fan issues are all related to this ‘internal budget’. If you can’t afford to pony up and play with the big boys then sell.
All I ask is that you please don’t destroy what’s taken years and millions of our, the fans, resources to build. We’re the ones who invest this team, you simply manage our funds… and we’re NOT pleased with the job you’re doing.

          • MB

Rather the team leave the city if there is no hope for future success because if there isn’t, what’s the point? Sports is a release from real life and something people are passionate about, once that is taken away all that’s left is a building and a name. Kill the hope, next is the passion, after that who cares.

This isn’t to say you give up on a team that struggles, fact is that’s when you support a team the most IMO (like last night) but unless there is some resemblance of hope or optimism then it is fruitless. Again without hope there is no team so one being in the city would be pointless. With that said Melnyk isn’t taking the Sens anywhere and with their new TV deal people will be lining up (relatively) to but the team.

      • Dirk-Diggler

I think all the Alfie talk is so over played. I love the guy and I hope that Detroit beats out Toronto for that final playoff spot. Him leaving hurt us but the organization needed to move in a new direction. It failed though but at least we took a shot at something different.

        • SensChirp

Over played in the fact that maybe we talk about it too often but the impact of his departure can not be overstated, I don’t think. It hurt them on so many levels (on the ice, off the ice, among the fan base, with Karlsson, league-wide reputation). It was a massive miscalculation on Melnyk’s part.

          • MB

That’s what happens when you wake up and go to bed drunk.

        • MB

It’s not the fact that it happened it’s the way that happened. It’s a lot different if someone dies because of natural causes vs being murdered. Obviously Alfie and sports/hockey in general is no way comparable to real life or this kind of situation but in terms of sports and what happened with Alfie… he didn’t retire, Melnyk killed him off and that’s the problem with it all.

    • thepez

Expectations placed on this team by us fans after last season has turned us to point fingers. It starts at the top. I put the blame squarely on Eugene’s head. He was the reason behind the Alfie fiasco and it went south as soon as Alfie walked. And then the blame continues with Bryan Murray for not having the vision of trading Craig Anderson in the summer and keeping Bishop and Lehner moving forward. Next is Paul MacLean. I’ve said it on here many times but he has changed his coaching style. In the media he says all the right things however his actions behind the bench prove otherwise. How many times have we heard “best players play”. Well it started in November when Lehner was on a roll and inexplicably he removes him from the net. Or if you look at our best stretch of the season just prior to the Olympic break, Stephane DaCosta comes up plays 9 games, the team goes 5-2-2 during those games. The guy hasn’t had a sniff since. Finally I blame the players and especially the guys we count on. I know I won’t be popular by saying this but EK65 has to be better. He has been soft all year in the defensive zone and as much as I like to watch him scoot up the ice, his risk taking is hurting this team way too much. He is our best player and it starts and ends with him.
We the fans who also pay for tickets expect that the players will keep improving and that they will show us that they care as much as we do. I know that the Montreal game was a kick in the gut, but to play the way they have these past three games at home with the season on the line is unacceptable. Hard not to be negative this year, especially when we all believe that this team should be better.

    • Sicilian

I’m still a Sens fan! I’m going to buy my Spezza Heritage Jersey today

  • Sens613

Love or hate Spezza, he’s been the most improved player after the trade deadline with the addition of Hemsky. Happy we finally found the skilled player we’ve been looking and asking for to play with Spezza at the price we got him for.

Hemsky’s goal is definitely a candidate for goal of the year! Let’s get him signed to an extension.

    • thirstytraveller

Agree. Essentially the Hemsky deal added three players – Hemsky, 9mm & Spezza, the latter two simply woke up from their 50 game slump.

      • Sens613

Great boost, let’s hope the pace doesn’t fade after getting paid.

      • MB

Yet they have won 1 game since then. At the end of the day that’s all that matters.

        • Nicholas Rawlins

Imagine what the scores would’ve been had they not been playing so well?

    • No Look Drop Pass

Michalek-Spezza-Hemsky have combined for 25 points in 7 games since the trade and they are making things happen almost every shift. Hoping Hemsky signs because him and Spezza seem to have chemistry even after only 7 games.

  • thirstytraveller

what a dirty dirty dangle! Now i wish i hadn’t stop streaming the game after TB’s third goal. What can I say, Suits was starting.

  • thirstytraveller

BTW where was Phillips on TB’s third goal. On one of the replays he was near a faceoff dot and not backing up Karlsson in front of the net on the PK.
Trade Phillips movement has to start and gain momentum this summer.

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I got into an argument with a few people around me who said that was all on Karlsson and secondly Lehner…. Oddly enough one of the idiots had an RSU scarf, so can’t say I’m shocked they had no clue what they were talking about

    • aegiszx

I like CP4, he’s a great guy, but as a defender my god, he’s not who Jared Cowen or Marc Methot should be modelling their game after… Maybe if they want to learn to have steady durable careers, but we need those two guys to step up and be impact shutdown D. They need mentoring from guys like Weber, Kronwall, Doughty, Timmonen, Vlasic…

      • Zelle

Marc Methot should be modeling his game after Marc Methot. Love this guy and his hip checks rock!

    • SensChirp

He’s a part of this team and will be for the foreseeable future. They will not be able to deal him. What they can do, is put him in situations where he can succeed and that’s as a 5/6/7 defenceman. And Phillips himself, needs to simplify his game. Trying to do way too much right now. Drifting all over the ice and losing his position way too easily.

      • thirstytraveller

his extension does have a limited NTC. Not out of the realm of possibility. I agree he’d be a useful #7 Dman to rotate in. At this point in his career, his focus should be on mentoring the younger Dman. I could see him following the footsteps of Luke Richardson, in taking on assistant defence coach role but I’m not sure Phillips has the drive for that role.

    • The Apostle

Whilst I agree that Phillips should be gone, I think you should save your energy for a movement that has a chance of a positive happening. The organisation aren’t going to trade away a guy that they just signed to a two year extention when they had chances to move him at the deadline.

    • No Look Drop Pass

Oh there he is, keeping watch over the open ice…

      https://twitter.com/BrianJKemp/status/446800904243933184/photo/1/large

  • aegiszx

This fanbase has said the same thing all year long. Bring in the young guys, ship out the vets, give the AHL team a chance, yada yada. But what strikes me is the fact that you need people to lead those guys. Murray said it in the summer, he needs those D-men with 400-700 game experience. You want a team of all rookies? Look no further than the Edmonton Oilers. It takes a lot more than skill to win in this league, and these prima donnas in red, black, white, and gold are learning first hand.

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

We need veterans that aren’t a bigger liability than putting a 95 you old gramps on the ice

  • Richard Boyd

I’m a little upset with the Senator’s DJ after Hemsky’s goal. We had just started the Hemsky chant and he plays a song drowning us out. Luckily we were able to start a second chant after the song ended but we weren’t sure if we’d be able to get it going seeing as how this is Ottawa and all ;)

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

The Dj was horrible… Except for the song(drawing a blank what it was) after the McArthur cuffufle

      • Richard Boyd

I thought he picked the appropriate song for the Hemsky goal (Dirty Deeds) but the timing was awful.

        • SensChirp

Dirty Deeds done “Dirt cheap” no less. Cost per point!

  • Lanny79

That was a terrific goal by Hemsky. As a leaf fan, I hope he goes elsewhere this summer. BTW, where has Ryan gone?

    • SensChirp

There has been talk that he’s playing through an injury of some kind. Watching him struggle to get around the ice it sure looks that way.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I still maintain that if there is an actual injury causing this much decline in his game that he should have gone and gotten fixed prior to the fans having turned on him.

        • BeJamin

“This much decline” how many posts and chances has he had? Tons. If he had 3 more goals he would be on pace for 30. He still probably will end up with 26-27. Also, out of the top 50 point getters… Only 3 have less than 17m avg TOI…. Ryan is one of the 3. His play is just fine. Maybe a little sluggish from injury but if he was playing appropriate minutes he would have 30g pace.

          • SensChirp

Ya, I don’t know that he’s capable of playing more minutes right now. Seems to be a struggle, as is.

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I am a huge fan and watched a tonne of his games in Anaheim, he is not playing the same game

    • boom

The same place as Clarkson, except he got there cheaper.

      • Lanny79

I think a more accurate comparison would be MacArthur. Clarkson was brought in to be an upgrade from Mac. That does not seem to be the case. But as for Ryan being ” cheaper”, don’t forget what Murray gave up.

    • CUP 2014-15

Joined a posse to locate Dave Clarkson.

  • Dirk-Diggler

TSN is saying E Stall or Skinner could be traded this summer. What do you think it would take to get one of those guys?

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

      Skinner would be great

      • Dirk-Diggler

What would you trade for him?

        • CohMa

I’d trade Spezza for Stall. Both could do with a change. Both are top line centers and we’d be trading one “leader” for another.

        • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Honestly no idea, so many of our guys have almost no current. Value due to such atrocious seasons.

    • MB

Need to get things straight in house before you can add anyone to the team. Last thing the Sens need right now are more players coming in from all over the place that won’t fix what’s wrong with the Sens. Simply throwing skilled guys out there and hoping shit sticks to a wall isn’t the solution.

The Sens need to focus on a new core, a young core and work from there. Getting a guy like Staal would be trying to put a band-aid on a slit wrist. Sens are bleeding out, they need to get that fixed before anything else.

    • aegiszx

      Skinner is Briere 2.0

Like the kid, but he’s so injury prone its ridiculous. Hasnt he had like 4 concussions to start his NHL career? No thanks.

  • Doc

    Next game guys. Must win!

    • Dirk-Diggler

      Afternoon game :(

  • Andrews theory

Said it before, if Ryan needs to get patched up over the summer, start the process now so he’s 100% for training camp. There is 0 value in having him play through an injury at this stage

  • Andrews theory

Nice to see Phillips with more appropriate ice time last night

    • Mat

I think appropriate ice time should be Kassian ice time…

Unless he wants to up his minutes by carrying the flag with the little kids at the start of the game, and shovel the ice with the crew during TV timeouts.

  • SensChirp

I’ve already started dreaming about next season. “Dreaming” being the key word here. In fact, I don’t even know if they could make it work under the cap. What would be your ideal line up next year?

    Michalek-Spezza-Hemsky
    MacArthur-Turris-Ryan
    Hoffman-Zibanejad-Alfredsson
    Greening-Smith-Neil

    Methot-Karlsson
    Cowen-Boyle
    Wiercioch-Ceci
    Phillips

    Anderson
    Lehner

    • CohMa

Did you forget Boro’s on a one-way next season? Or did we trade him in your dream? And I’ve been kinda anti-Alfie since he left, but I’d accept him back. Just don’t give him back the C….. Well don’t give Spezza it either :)

      • SensChirp

I actually just switched Wiercioch out and put in Borowiecki. Which would mean a Wiercioch trade, I guess. It’s a wacky dream.

        • MB

          Spezza won’t be back

          • SensChirp

I actually think five players from that line up won’t be with the team but that’s not the exercise.

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

            Let’s see that exercise!

          • MB

5 is probably a good guess aside from Alfie as that truly is a dream. Ideal lineup next year? Never happen the way I would want it to but…

Trades are coming so for the sake of this I’ll just assume Stewart and draft picks are coming back.

            MacArthur/Turris/Ryan
            Hoffman/Zibanejad/Hemsky
            Lazar/Smith/Stewart
            Thornton/Da Costa/Neil
            Greening

            Methot/Karlsson
            Cowen/Boyle
            Phillips/Ceci
            Boroweicki

            Lehner
            Gustavsson.

          • Mat

Whaaaaaaaaat? Where did Spezza go? What did we get in return?? Did he waive his no trade to go to Boston for Shawn Thornton?? Or do we trade him to SJ and now we have Joe Thornton playing wing on the 4th line?

          • MB

“Trades are coming so for the sake of this I’ll just assume Stewart and draft picks are coming back.” Read.

          • Corey Trevor

Not with the team: Alfredsson, Boyle, Michalek, Wiercioch and… Greening? Don’t say Hemsky… please let Hemsky come back.
Also, what are your thoughts about removing Kassian, Greening and Neil from the roster? I think we’d be better for it.

            Michalek-Spezza-Hemsky
            MacArthur-Turris-Ryan
            Hoffman-Zibanejad-Stone
            Schneider-Smith-Condra
            Prince/Puempel-Da Costa-Pageau

            Ehrhoff-Karlsson
            Methot-Ceci
            Cowen-Boro
            Phillips

            Anderson
            Lehner

          • Jason

Lol so you just want to call up half the B-Sens to play?

          • Corey Trevor

Ya, sort of… although, Hoffman (13GP), Stone (7GP), Pageau (21GP), Borowiecki (13GP), Ceci (37GP) and Da Costa (12GP) have all played with the Sens this year. Schneider, Prince and Puempel haven’t. I included 5 forward lines, knowing full well that Schneider, Puempel and Prince still have another year in the A. I think we could see Schneider next year for 10 or so games.
Don’t forget, we’re owned by Scrooge McDouche… so, saving money by playing AHLers might be where we’re headed.

          • Mat

Maybe not, but that’s a more interesting conversation. Who are the 5 then? If I were to guess:
            9MM, PW46, CG14, ZS15, AH83 (signs elsewhere).
Maybe a combo of 14/15 and 46 are packaged for a replacement winger for 9MM.
Sadly, Philips is still on the team and Neil plays 1st line minutes. Condra is omitted from everyone’s conversation, but he remains our top defensive forward (excluding MacA).

    • esk

i would love alfie back…but spezza as captain that would be kinda awkward lol

      • Jason

If Alfie came back Spezza wouldn’t be the Captain.

    • Jason

      Vanek-Spezza-Hemsky
      MarArthur-Turris-Ryan
      Hoffman-Zibanejad-Alfreddson
      Greening-Smith-Neil
      Condra/Stone
      Methot-Karlsson
Cowen-Phillips(just because we are stuck with him now)
      Weircoch-Ceci
      Borowiecki
      Anderson
      Lehner
Sign Gryba to a 2way contract and send him back to the AHL.
I was actually thinking of this all morning.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I don’t think Gryba on a two way would allow us to put him down.

    • Zelle

This may be a dumb question, but you can dress 7 defensemen right? So like Phillips could play a bit, but Wier the most?

    • Zelle

What about Zbad on the wing and get DaCosta or Pageau to center? They are better on faceoffs I do believe, and their speed would work well on that line.

  • Dirk-Diggler

I just called the Sens to get 4 more tickets to the Leafs game for a guy on my hockey team and the price was close to $550 with my season ticket holder discount! Yikes! The guy on the line said it straight faced and justified it as being a “big game”. Their dynamic pricing is ridiculous. No wonder us season ticket holders sell off our Leafs games, it creates a market for us to make enough to almost pay off our season seats.

  • Senators Pundit

Not sure if this has been mentioned already but I noticed an interesting difference in defensive strategy last night between our boys and the opposition.

When TB retrieved the puck in their zone they would flip the puck up high in the air to clear it. This got them a change, slowed down the game, and limited our momentum.

When WE retrieved the puck in our zone (and this is almost always the case no matter which defenceman gets it) they play is along the ice, sometimes hard shots, sometimes soft shots, sometimes backhands, and it almost always ends up with their D, who are ready to either move the puck to a forward or take a point shot immediately. This puts us back on our heels, out of position, and susceptible to an easy goal.

I mean it’s easy to say we should do this, but it’s also easy to flip the puck up in the air. We set up the other team’s D for shots more than they do, on a nightly basis. This is both a player judgment problem, and a coaching problem. Why aren’t we teaching our guys to avoid that? Or to do anything other than clear the puck along the boards or to the middle? Those spots are always covered. This cost us the game last night, it cost us the game in Montreal, and god knows how many more.

Anybody else notice this is a critical and easily correctable problem for our D? Why do they keep doing the same damn thing and expect a different result?

  • FBP

    Joy Lindsay ‏@PuckJoy 7s
#BSens have added goalie Philippe Trudeau to their roster, per #AHL transactions. Trudeau played this season for the #Ottawa67s. #Sens

    Did we draft/sign this player?

    • CohMa

He was an over-ager this year and undrafted, therefore a free agent. I assume Randy Lee just signed him to contract / PTO(?) because of the injury situation.

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Does this mean Anderson is done and Hammond is up for the rest of the season.

      • CohMa

Not necessarily. Maybe Lawson is out long term. Or neither and they just want insurance for Bingo’s playoff push and to get a look at Trudeau since Lawson is a UFA at the end of this year.

  • Moudy Mahfouz

I really think we need to sign HEMSKY to 5 million per year if he can keep this play up. Take over michaeleks contract because wow that goal last night i have watched about 25 times…and everytime i watch it i just scream on how amazed I am

    • xN1Cx

Do you actually scream? You working? :)

I agree though, he needs to stay on board. I could see Mich. easily being replaced by Puemp or Stone next season and remain as effective if not more so.

      • Moudy Mahfouz

I am a student and the whole Library stares at me like I am some hard core sens fan (indeed I am)

        • xN1Cx

I accept and would cheer with you!

  • CUP 2014-15

    Tough, tough freakin year.
First off we loose the face of the franchise in an ugly manner
Then we have to listen to our Owner go on about being broke and loosing 10 mill per. Well as a fan I must say that the owner is either full of it or a bad business man. Play-offs almost every year, near full building, etc.
Most of the talking heads put this team near the top of the conference.
    2011-12 Over perform
    2012-13 Over perform
Health of key players this year
    Kids a year older
    Bring in Ryan
    Top tier Goaltending
    Jack Adams
Well key players don’t get it done, kids take a step back, Ryan looked great early and just OK of late, Goaltending has been of Jr. level and Jack Adams has been more like Jack Daniels after a long night. The end result is a bad season, the perfect storm if you will. Anyone who thinks 20 pro athletes mailed in the season have no idea what these guys are made of. This season has hurt them more then us, that is the way pros are. They care and they hate to loose. Sens fans are great and want a winner as bad as any in the league. Unfortunately it’s tough to watch the season end like this. Here’s to going down fighting.

    • Andrews theory

“This season has hurt them more then us, that is the way pros are. ”
I disagree and let me tell you why…

      1) MacArthur’s comments the other day lent credibility to the idea that players were in fact mailing it in otherwise, why say it?

      2) if you were to go back and watch the game tapes beginning in Edmonton you can see the body language and compete level alter drastically half way through the game.

      3) This is not a team of seasoned veterans, this is a team of young kids learning what it takes to compete night in night out and no they don’t always show up.

      4) We the fans contribute significant portions of our income to supporting the team and while no one likes to lose, I’m not sure how “hurt” any of the roster have been by this experience except potentially a guy like Wiercioch who has had his development completely stunted through lack of opportunity.

      • CUP 2014-15

I am not saying they worked their ass off, I am saying that when you work for something as a group and your whole focus is compete and win for your entire life, yes, they likely care more then you or me and when this is also your profession that pays for your family and this year happens, yes I think they care more. It’s their Life.

  • BeJamin

Melnyk is an idiot and the fans have every right to be mad. I’ll show my displeasure exactly how I should. Which is by not supporting such utter nonsense as giving away Conacher to save a few hundred grand or losing a Franchise Icon because our owner is a putz. Only way anything will change is if fans speak up and put together serious petitions to make it known we won’t spend our dollars if he doesn’t clean up his act or get out of town. Simple as that. Power to the people.
This is NOT the Toronto Maple Leafs. I will not put up with this crap and I will not sit and watch my team toil in mediocrity and cheer them on for it. The issues with the team have been glaring since early in the season. We’ve done nothing to fix it. We aren’t even playing Da Costa, Stone, Pageau, Conacher, Wier, and possibly Claesson/Borocop who by all accounts have already proven they are better than what we’re putting out on the ice.
Greening, Neil, Phillips. Can we really justify these guys playing NHL games at this point? Even Smith is barely better than grant, possibly not even better when you take into account all the retarded penalties he takes. The team has been a complete shit show and there is one man to blame.
The Buck Stops with Melnyk. Literally.

  • Andrews theory

i still think Michalek is resigned this offseason

    • sbs138

agree. there’s no one to replace him. Spez, Hemsky and Milo have looked great together. that line just needs to limit the chances they give to the opposition.

      • MB

        Too easy

      • runningbear1974

That’s all they need to do… I think Spezza has proven a career of not limiting the chances to the opposition, there’s no reason to believe he’s going to change that next year…

        • SensChirp

Must drive you nuts to see Spezza playing so well lately.

          • runningbear1974

            No, proves my point… He’s playing “well”, but still losing… He’s still not solid defensively… He’s still a liability…

          • runningbear1974

It does suck for me that because he’s playing “well” that will increase the chance of re-signing him, and therefore extend the length of our mediocrity… It’s too bad the general population doesn’t see it as well…

          • runningbear1974

sorry for 3 quick replies… So, what you’re happy? this is good for you? You’re rejoicing at his wonderfulness…

          • bluebuyyoo

Why do I get the feeling that even if MacArthur was named captain and he scored 50 goals, you would still be disappointed.

          • runningbear1974

You are wrong… I can’t explain your feelings… But, I love the hard working 2-way players… So MacArthur is one of my favourites…
I hate the skilled, got in on pedigree, don’t practice, don’t get better, don’t hit, but get lots of praise from fans because of their fancy dangle…

          • Colin

Well, when they consistently score 80 points per season, it’s pretty easy to see why they are coveted by most teams. It would be great to have a team full of guys that worked there asses off, but you need skilled players in the mix.

          • runningbear1974

I agree you need skill… It sucks that’s it one or the other… I think the dominant teams have players with both skill and effort…
My concern is that we stay a mediocre team for a really long time… And that is very possible depending on what we establish as our identity…
If what we care about are fancy highlight goals, then we have and always had a team good enough for that… But, if we want to be a cup contender elite team, then we need more, especially from our more veteran players… We are perceived as soft…

          • bluebuyyoo

that’s the tricky part. Getting the proper balance of grit, effort and skill is what makes a team a winner. Hopefully, Murray can get closer to this goal next year. He sure has a busy summer.

          • MB

He’s playing fine, not great, not bad, somewhere in the middle. Exactly what you want of your captain, right? A guy that plays well when he wants to and even then doesn’t bring much else.

Since blaming Greening for that OT goal against the Pens the Sens have won 4 games. Maybe nothing to it, maybe something to it, not sure.

      • Zelle

That line played with two more ‘stay at home’ defensemen is perfect. Maybe Methot – Ceci, or something like that.

    • Mat

If he does, I hope its for spare parts for Hemsky.

    • The Apostle

I agree. If that’s the case I would hope it’s nothing more than a 2 year deal but I’m not convinced that’s how it goes.

One consistent AND (to my mind) valid criticism of Bryan Murray’s GMship of this team is that he too often finds a way to sign free agents that he should let walk.

  • Moudy Mahfouz

I really think macurthur could be a potential leader if he wants to sign long term. Plays hard every night. Says the right things off the ice. Really hope he signs for 3 more years. Him and Turris look great

    • Andrews theory

      YES

    • MB

After the season MacArthur has had vs the Sens what damn reason is there to stay for him? He’s going to cash in either way, same ask Hemsky.

Unless there is a serious change in philosophy along with player personnel and a clear indication that this team is trying to turn the corner you are going to see the same crap next year (good year for it though). If the fans don’t have hope why the hell would a player who has a choice of 29 cities to play in have any kind of optimism?

After the needed change (and that’s moving Spezza) they need to gain some credibility back but IMO that doesn’t change until Melnyk is gone. Too big of an ego, too large of a drunk, and too much debt outside of the Sens for him to let go of the only real solid investment he has ever made (legally).

      • Zelle

With the Sens he just tied for his most goals in a season with plenty of games left to up on that. I imagine he enjoys playing with Turris. I think he will stay.

        • MB

Maybe… he won’t stay if they have another year like this one or the leadership core stays the same. There’s a reason he called everyone out.

    • The Apostle

Agreed, that’s the main thing that I took from his “there’s a thing called pride” comments. He sounded like a leader.

    • runningbear1974

I agree… I think we should put more focus on the guys that work hard, and less focus on the guys who get into the league based on pedigree and skill…

    • Zelle

I still think Turris would be the best candidate for a Captain on the Sens. First team and fans gave up on him, comes to Ottawa and improves year after year. shows leadership by doing his job day in and day out, and training hard in the off season. Very humble guy, very driven, and a team first guy since he’s been here. I like Clarke too though. They make a great combo.

      • runningbear1974

ok… I agree with you again… Turris is a real captain in the Yzerman type mold… He also doesn’t retaliate when someone hits him… I wish I had a vote…

  • runningbear1974

I know Hemsky looked great in that goal… BUT… He’ll only score that type of goal every 5 to 10 games, and won’t be doing that in the playoffs… He looks good, and he follows our established Identity, but, I’m hoping we changing our identity to something more, substantial…

  • Miguel

    Rant alert:
    Hello… Hello….. Helloooooooo
where are all you Phillips lovers now?
    Good D-man?
Great leader? maybe he is the one mentoring Cowen? and yah if you want to lead your D to the most goals against in the league!
Honestly as I have be saying, if he was not such a great character guy, and good guy in the community, his career would have gone with the Gill’s and the Commodore and the Komiserick, but fuk NO… we have this shit for 2 more long fukin years… not sure I can take it!

    • runningbear1974

I was at the game last night… I saw Ceci pointing around too.. I hope he doesn’t learn his bad habits… 2 icings from Phillips, and several non-pressured giveaways… But, he had that disappointed in himself look… I guess that’s sincere since he does that a lot…

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I honestly think that Philips is one of the key problems…. Unfortunately he just is not very good on the ice anymore… Decisions are horrible.. Pointing at what looks like nothing, head down.

People blame Karlsson or Lehner for the third goal, what was Philips doing not covering the backside of the net?

It’s unfortunate that apparently he is or chosen veteran leadership… I want to still like him as he is a very nice guy and great in community and has opened a business implying he intends to stay here after retirement… But it is almost impossible when he is regularly the direct cause of a fair number of our defensive gaffe every night

    • The Apostle

Some of us were complaining when he signed the 3 year deal at the end of 2010/11. Imagine how we feel.

    • runningbear1974

The thing about Phillips is I don’t think he works out in the summer time… There is no freaking way he’s practicing… He’s not even trying to get better… This is not what we want as an example to our youths… He’s the opposite of what we want, he got in on pedigree, and he’s been running with that the whole time… He’s taken a reduced role on the team (defensive defenseman), and has barely managed that… Given his pedigree, he could have gotten a lot better, if only he had the drive to do so…

  • whammer44

So just got back from 2 weeks of vacay without any internet or worldly access to see my Sens nightmares while I was gone came true. Disappointed but not surprised. Watching my first game in a couple of weeks last night it seems some of the problems that have been with the team the whole year didn’t magically go away…go figure

Defense needs a shake up. Beyond EK, CC, and MM, everyone else is possible trade bait. Not happy with CP4 resign, but hopefully he ends up as one of the highest paid 6/7 dman in the league. Hopefully Uncle Bryan can re-sign Hemsky and extend MacArthur. I’m still prepared to let Michalek go…and tough decisions on Ryan and Spez on term and money. I’d move Ryan for the right return. It would likely take at least $30 million to keep Spez…tough call! If he stays healthy I keep him, but the crystal ball is full of static.

    Here’s a fantasy lineup for next season…

Spez-Hemsky-Simmonds (traded for Ryan with a 1st rounder also coming our way)
Turris-MacArthur-Stewart (traded for Cowen, Greening, +?)
    Zbad-Stone-Hoffman
    Smith-Neil-Condra

    Lazar

    EK-MM
    Boyle(FA)-CC
    Wiercioch-Boro

    Phillips

Lehner-Jonas Hiller (Andy, Gryba traded for Hiller…not sure how feasible this is or what it would take)

  • runningbear1974

Last year was an abnormality… That wasn’t the real senators… Too many injuries… This year is the real senators…

    • Dirk-Diggler

      This doesn’t make sense..

      • runningbear1974

Next year will be closer to this year… Not as good as last year… We were more defensive team last year, and we can’t go back to that style with Spezza and Karlsson… Makes sense to me, in my crazy non-Spezza loving world…

  • senate19

I hope Murray brings the guys in to a closed-door meeting and says “look guys, I know this sucks and you all want to leave town. I would too” “but please, please bare with me, we should be getting a new owner and everything will be all right… stick it out for one more year”

    • Jason

      Lol we’re not getting a new owner…

  • esk

and conacher had 3 pts last night

    • Miguel

yes everything we touch this year turns to shit!
does anyone have any doubt at all that we become a lottery pick, and we lose the highest pick we would have had in what 15 year when Spezza went 2nd overal
Fuk this year keeps getting worse and worse!

    • Zelle

      I miss Conacher :(

  • Miguel

by all means do whatever it takes to sign Hemsky
I do not buy all this floaing crap, he played for a shit team in EDM, that mistreated him once the high profile drafts came in.
he is a keeper, even if it means we would have to move Ryan

    • runningbear1974

I don’t agree about Hemsky… We’ll be regretting it later when he stops hitting and stops trying hard… He is a skilled player… He’s not in the league because of his work ethic… And… Apparently Skilled players get paid more than Hard work players… He does fit in real well with the Senators identity though…

      • Zelle

Sens still have many hard work players though. They are just all young, except for Neil.

        • runningbear1974

I agree… But, it’s the amount of ice time… And, ratio… If we have too many skilled such that as a team we’re soft… That’s where I think we’re at right now…

  • Miguel

WTF has PW done to deserve this treatment?
I cant understand why we would punish a young kid with huge potential, and keep playing an aging veteren, who admittedly by the coach is hurting this team.
5 damn losses with 1000 goals against, yet he does not even get a sniff.
Media someone please ask the obvious question “why have you benched PW and keep playing shittier player”

    • Andrews theory

second best +/- on the the backend and second best offensive defensman.
same logic you put Chris Neil on as your 6th skater when trying to tie it up of course..

    • boom

I think we have to accept the fact that the Jack Adams award was a fluke.

There’s a direct correlation between this award and goalies having career years, and last year is a perfect example.

If it was one or two questionable decisions, it would be acceptable, but he has continuously bafled everyone with his decision making. Wiercioch is a prime example, but just one of many.

I really feel that this summer will be the proof of the pudding – if our potential FA’s sign, then maybe we are all overstating how badly he has coached.

I suspect, however, that they may want out, and who could blame them?

      • Miguel

great points Boom, it really seems like many on this team are moping, and who can blame them 5 straight losses when we needed points the most will do this. But to the point, if we keep playing Cowen to give him experience, why not PW46?

        • runningbear1974

It is too bad because it does seem that Cowen has responded well by being sat out…

      • runningbear1974

I don’t accept that conclusion… What does a coach do when he has 1-dimensional players… He has to protect them… What if he has 3 or 4 1-dimensional players? That’s tough to deal with… What if these 1-dimensional players don’t like to play defense… What if you ask something and they refuse…
Put your money on Maclean… Or put your money on Spezza, Karlsson…
Maclean could have gotten better results this year, but instead he’s exposed what are team really is… We’re very loosy-goosy… Not very man-ly… More skill than effort…
Maclean made a big mistake this year trusting our veterans rather than trusting our youths…
I would do the opposite… I bet on Maclean… Ask him which players he wants on the team and trade the others…

    • runningbear1974

This “Shitter Player”… That’s Phillips… He’s our veteran, with over 10 years experience… I dare you to say that to his face… I agree with you, but apparently management think he’s valuable to the team, and therefore how can Maclean possibly insult our glorious veteran by sitting him out… catch-22…

      • Don Ciccio

Not trying to insult Phillips in any way because I have been watching him and liking his game since he came into the league but, if you are starting to hurt your team’s chances of winning then, veteran or not, you have to sit. Look no further than what NJ is doing with Brodeur.

  • Nicholas Rawlins

Still don’t understand the spezza trading ideas, the guys been unreal since the olympic break, and if we can get hemsky to stay those two could do some damage. I’d shop Ryan first, guy clearly doesn’t want to be here.

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

The Ryan doesn’t want to be here is probably only second to calling people who disagree with your view a leaf fan in the idiotic comment scale.

He has been trying hard all season, sure he hasn’t been lighting it up, but when Smith/Neil/Greening get all the PP time and offensive and defensive draws what do you expect??

The guy was brought in to be a top line player…and some games he plays 3rd liner minutes….some claim he is hurt, I could buy it…and comments like ^ are the exact reason I say that if he is in fact hurt that he should be taken from the lineup and allowed to heal….all we need is fans making him our newest scapegoat.

      • runningbear1974

Ryan is awesome… He took out 2 guys yesterday… Generates plays… Sacrifices his body… He’s a man… A real man… He’s what our identity should be… “Should”, if we want to be a cup contending elite team…

      • Sens-fan-in-mtl

Yeah, i don’t understand the Ryan hate, especially since he is most
likely playing hurt. the anger and emotion he showed at the end of the
Habs game would basically suggest the complete opposite of what you are
        suggesting.

        • runningbear1974

I find it sad… That the fans prefer some types of players over other types… And it’s sad to me because Ryan is more the type of player I wish we were as an identity… So sad for me… Great for you Spezza lovers…

        • Zelle

I think it’s time for me to make a compilation of awesome things Ryan does on a nightly basis. I saw him cover for EK several times last night. He also broke up many plays in the Sens’ zone. His back checking is impressive, and his forechecking is good too. He had two really good scoring chances as well but Bishop had him. And yet some people were still criticizing him?

          • runningbear1974

            I agree with you… I’d give you 2 thumbs up if I could…

    • bluebuyyoo

Playing hurt cannot be used as an excuse. If you play hurt and your performance is sub-par, expect to be criticized. The alternative is to leave the lineup, get the proper medical help and give your spot to a healthy body.

  • thirstytraveller

This summer, 9mm out, Dave Bolland in!

    • Zelle

Bolland and Reimer? Maybe they’ll turn out like MacArthur..!

  • Zelle

People probably aren’t watching the Rangers v Jackets game, but Nash just pushed Bob after the whistle!

Haha I guess Bob kicked Nash’s stick away when he went to pick it up.
