Game Day- Spezza, Cowen Out vs. Carolina

A night after an impressive win over the Calgary Flames, the Senators return to the ice at the Canadian Tire Centre looking to stretch their win streak to three against Eric Staal and the Carolina Hurricanes.

Playoff hopes are still pretty slim and the situation hasn’t really changed a whole lot.  They have eight games left to play and probably need to win all of them to have a chance at grabbing one of the two wild cards spots in the Eastern Conference.  Just one other game of significance tonight as the Panthers visit the New Jersey Devils.  The Sens could use a favour from the Panthers in that one.

This morning the Senators announced they recalled forward Jean Gabriel Pageau from Binghamton of the American Hockey League.

Pageau has 41 points in 44 games with the BSens and has earned another look up here.  He’ll take Jason Spezza’s spot in the line up. Spezza was injured in last night’s game against Calgary and is being held out for precautionary reasons. Jared Cowen is also out with an injury suffered in last night’s game. Just an optional morning skate for the Senators today so we’ll have to wait until game time to see how MacLean lines them up. A best guess at tonight’s line up.

Craig Anderson gets the start in the Ottawa goal. Puck drop is scheduled for just after 7:30 PM

  • Moudy Mahfouz

Spezza injured? damn that sucks. GO SENS GO

  • Moudy Mahfouz

Turris should get the C tonight.

  • Conor_smythe

Would love to see JGP on the “top” line with hemmer and 9MM

We gave that spot to Dacosta when Spezza was out early in the season..Why not give JGP a shot

    • Sensnation

They want to get Zibanejad more ice time, and he had some chemistry with Michalek earlier in the year. PM will likely try both at some point.

    • jimmyjohnson

JGP will be playing with Condra, Smith, and Greening before the 2nd period is half over. Watch.

      #noLongerTrustache

      • CUP 2014-15

Don’t think your far off, but Greening is out and I see him more with Kassian and Neil. That should make him look freakin great.

    • Brutus5247

Coming up from Bingo to play on the top two lines might be a bit of a stretch.

  • Sensnation

Really enjoying the late season rally from the boys. GO SENS GO!!!

  • Pasky

Hopefully Pageau canprove himself fir a spot next year, then slot Zibanejad in Michalek spot and resign Hemsky

    • Harv

Nope. Like to see Stone, Z’Bad and Hoffman next year.

      • Sandy

As the 3rd line, I think they would be very good.

        • Harv

Exactly. Give them time to grow and learn.

  • Jacques

Carolina is going to find us tough to play against! C’mon boys time to get on a roll!

    • Sandy

They won in Florida after they ran Luongo and injured him, so Andy better watch his back.

  • Zelle

A little alarmed by Cowen being injured again. Hopefully it’s nothing serious.

Go Sens Go! Don’t let the Canes sweep!

    • NO65*

Cowen has been a bust all season long. Even last night on the Monahan goal, Cowen was at the blue line trying to get the puck out while Condra was already there. This guy is totally lost on the ice. Hopes he get’s traded next summer.

      • Zelle

Good luck getting a guy who keeps getting injured at such a young age traded though. An injury to Cowen is bad for the Sens in either case.

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Well here is a chance for people to see what they have been begging for all year.

Could be interesting to see how this lineup plays, may ever so slightly give management an idea of where we would actually stand if they were to move Spezza…and Cowen hurt again….shocking

    • Brutus5247

I agree I think they will be watching closely.

    • Jacques

Anxious to see 4-0 without Spezza so far this year lets hope it continues!

    Kyle Turris named NHL’s 1st star of the week – 4g 3a-7pts and +7

  • CUP 2014-15

A win tonight is huge. Move to within 2 of the pack and 4 out of a spot with the Isle in town next. Would love for the blue team to be in the spoiler role when we meet, didn’t think I would be saying that a week ago. Question is, can they win 7 and grab 14 more points as the number sure as hell looks to be less then 92 now. CBJ has a brutal sched coming up and it is Wash that is more of a focus at this point for me. Nashville with a favor last night, stealing a point away from the Caps.
To bad about Cowen and Spezz as both have been playing so much better of late. I am interested to see PW and EG together, they were playing well just before the management team chose to exile PW to the press box for an extended period. As has been the case all season, this team will win on the backs of the Turris line again. I can’t remember the last time I saw two players jell so well after such a short time as CMac and KT.
Interesting to read BG’s tweets about Hemsky making his decision on next year based on the ability to play with Spezz, compile that with Ryan saying how excited he was to have a chance to line up along side Spezz and one would have to think that two world class players wanting to play with the captain speaks volumes. Big win on the way tonight. Go Sens Go.

    • sprucesens

very good to hear about hemsky’s comments. I imagine with the chemistry they’ve shown, they will get the deal done. I am just hoping michalek goes, and cammy comes in. I got my wish for ryan, but I can keep hoping. If not, let the rookies step in. Not another impact player that is going to come here and be better than our prospects, realistically. (vanek and moulson not likely coming here)

      • Harv

Don’t trade our youth. I like what we have right now,

    • Harv

They have us interested again. Is there a Sen’s fan not tuned in right now? Great stuff!

Da Costa is injured after taking a stick in the face on Friday.

      • things that make me go hmmmmmm

did not know that – thanks for the update
        apologies for my rant

        • MethotToMyMadness

Oh wow, that’s crazy. With SDC out and now JPG called up, we have depleted that Bingo team for the playoffs.

          • sprucesens

time for prince puempel and Schneider to show what they can do I guess.

    • Dirk-Diggler

My co-worker is his Ottawa mother…. This is what she just emailed me…

just Steph’s luck, he got high sticked in the face on Saturdaya nd is now out for who knows how long, his nose is shattered, he needs reconstructive plastic surgery….and the guy gets a 2 min…this is the Syracuse crunch team, they are bushwakers…i saw them a few weeks back and couldn’t believe their lack of respect for the opponent/game, they kept hacking and ankles, back of leg and head, but this is just awful. his whole face is swollen and the pain is just awful

      • Zelle

Damn, thanks for sharing. Hope he gets better soon.

        • Dirk-Diggler

The source is 100% accurate too… She billeted him and her family rents out a house to Sens players.. most recent tennant was Zibby…

But, Da Costa and her son have become best friends and the familes are tight…

      • Harv

Really bad news. DaCosta is a keeper. He was told what he needed to do to be an NHL player and he did it. Really impressed with his game when we was last up. And, he has experience with Hoffman.

I hope we are able to keep DaCosta and make room for him.

        • Jacques

If you want that to happen Spezza will have to dealt. I like DaCosta too.

      • Sandy

That sounds brutal. Any chance the AHL re-looks at that for a suspension.. considering the injury?

  • Inquiring Mind

    Interesting Christian Folin article here

    http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/eye-on-hockey/24499863/christian-folin-could-make-instant-impact-as-college-free-agent

Is Ottawa one of the teams after him ?

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Guaranteed they at least approach him.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

WHOA we can get – again!!!

    • Miguel

after the huge hype and experimentation on
      Butler
      Winchester
      SDC
I find it very difficult to get caught in the hype of these undrafted College players,
none have made the impact that was hyped up about them

      • Harv

I agree. We have too many prospects in the tank right now. Don’t even waste your time.

      • 0101001111101010010101011111

        They’re all forwards – CF is a D-Man.
Ottawa has almost the worst goals against in the NHL.
Seems like the best free agent D-Man available should be looked at by Ottawa

        • bjessima

And Bingo has one of the worst GAA in the AHL (but they score a ton), so defensive help is a priority.

      • do due dew doodoo

soooo – you won’t be complaining about Chris Phillips for the next 2 seasons ?

        • Miguel

if there is any hope that CP will earn his 5 MIl over the next 2 years, than your right I wont be complaining about him.
But do you have any hope, that he will get faster, and play better?
          thought so…

    • Sandy

Did he play with Karlsson in Frolunda?
My guess is Detroit would have the inside track because of all the Swedes. The Sens only have 3. But they should go after him.
Tim Murray will go hard after him as well…
Would be nice for the Sens to get him.. but what would their chances be?

  • big-d

Here’s some of the best finishes down the stretch (last 10 games) over the past 10 years.

2005-06 – New Jersey wins 11 straight to end the year, wins round 1 against the Rangers 4 straight but loses in 5 games to Carolina who would go on to win the Stanley Cup.

2007-08 – Washington goes 11-1 in last 12 games of the year unfortunately they lose in 7 games in the 1st round to Philadelphia

Many other teams have finished 8-1-1 down the stretch.

Here are some of Ottawa’s best winning streaks since their Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2006-07.

2007-08 – Ottawa starts the year off going 13-1 in 14 games (best start ever)
2008-09 – Ottawa goes 9-1 in the month of March
    2009-10 – Ottawa goes 11-0 in January

Let’s hope that Ottawa is due for another one of those incredible streaks!!!
    GO SENS GO!!!!!

    • my2sens

I think the advantage the Sens have right now is there isn’t any ‘pressure’. All the nay-sayers and media have foolishly written them off before they truly are done. And therefore, they seem to be having more fun out there…

Seeing Kassian stick up for Karlsson last night was something missing from the Sens as well…

So I am going to say – 10 games win streak. DONE. Book your 1st round tickets!

      :-)

      GSG!!!

  • A-Train

How can you not just love Kyle Turris as a player. The guy is amazing and seems to have a flair for the dramatic. Would love to see what he can do deep in a playoff run. Hope the Sens can build a real contender as he gets into his prime.

    • Zelle

The only thing I dislike about Turris is that he started his career as a Coyote and not a Senator so his rookie card is in the wrong jersey!

    • Harv

Turris or Karlson will be the next captain. Either way you get someone who works their tail off.

  • Sens613

3% is always 100% CHANCE to make the playoff!!! GSG!!!

  • Dirk-Diggler

I am excited to see some of the kids in the lineup and playing meaningful minutes. I hope JGP has a great game!

  • MethotToMyMadness

    As requested by Chirp!!

So here we are, Sens are showing some of the most promising hockey all year and we are 8 games away from the end of the season. Sure, anything can happen but the playoff’s are not something I think the Sens will reach this year, and I’m a very opportunistic guy. I think it’s just expecting too much bad luck to happen to all the teams ahead of us, nothing to do with the Sens play of late. However, I do LOVE how this team rolled up it’s sleeves, dusted themselves off and continue to say, it ain’t over.

9MM, Spezza and Hemsky continue to roll. Meanwhile CMac, Turris and Stone are on an equaling impressive run. So this starts the re-sign talk, bring back Milan. While I can understand the reason for it, he’s fitting in right now, if there is ever a time to work out some type of trade, it’s when his stock is the highest. He was worth nothing before the trade deadline and all the sudden, he’s now worth something. It would no doubt be a sign and trade type of situation, so the better the signing for Ottawa, the easier to flip him to a team for something at the draft.

If 9MM is gone by next year, I see no reason why Stone could not jump on the line with Spezza and Hemsky, which puts Ryan back with Turris and MacArthur. Stone and Spezza already showed some chemistry, so I think it’s the natural fit.

Ottawa has probably the worst record against Carolina, than any team in the NHL. I don’t know why they have so much trouble against them, but here’s hoping for a big win tonight. Go Sens!!!

    • Roar…

Hemsky & Stone both very much prefer RW. I believe Hemsky has played left before in Edmonton but it really doesn’t gel with him very well – in his opinion.

It’s more likely one of the two would play with Zibanejad. And you still end up with a hole at 1st line LW. I think we’re better off re-signing Michalek as his surgery/recovery seems to have gone very well. If you can get him at a decent price then he has excellent trade value going forward. It only gets higher if his skating/defensive game come back together after a full summer of training for him and Spezza.

Moving Michalek now = still selling low. His value won’t be much less than it is now if we get him on a reasonable 3-4 year extension. It could however, get much much higher. The only way I see him leaving is if the team absolutely cannot afford to have both Hemsky & Michalek. Then I suppose the choice is pretty easy and we fill the LW spot from the Bingo kids.

      • Doc

Agreed. We just need a LW for the ‘top’ line and we could roll 3 lines. Not sure if Michalek is part of the plan, but I’ll leave that decision to the pros.

MY optimal top 9 for next year is as follows:

        ???-Spezza-Hemsky
        MacA-Turris-Ryan
        Hoffman-Zibby-Stone

        Boom.

        • A-Train

i like that look of that too. not sure how those ???s get filled though.

          • Harv

As I said above – Michalek. Give the chemistry a chance.

        • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Isn’t Ryan comfortable on the left as well?

May be easier to try him up there and find another RW for line 2…If Ryan, Spezza, Hemsky could get chemistry it could be absolutely lethal.

      • Harv

Agree. The dynamic of the team has changed with the addition of Hemsky and the emergence of Stone and Hoffman. Many of my complaints have been answered by these three. And, you have to credit Murray for focusing on Hemsky. He knew what he was doing.

No reason to break up Spezza, Hemsky and Michalek right now. If Michalek flames out next year then you can move him. You lose nothing by waiting. Stone and Hoffman are in next year and will fill some holes. Keep Condra for his PK. Love to see Z’Bad, Hoffman and Stone as a young line next year. If that worked you could have a top line in four or five years.

  • Zelle

Not only is Turris 1st star of the week as mentioned here, but he beat out Bergeron and Oshie:
    http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=447873

  • Lorenzo72
  • FistsofNeil25

It’s too bad Spezza’s out with such a big game to play tonight, especially if it’s just precautionary. He’s been great offensively since the Olympic break and we could really use him tonight.

I sure hope it’s Zibanejad that gets to take Spezza’s spot on the second line with Hemsky and Milo. Zibanejad always plays better with skilled players and bigger minutes. This game might be a glimpse of what the team will look like with Zibby as the second line center depending on what happens with Spezza this summer.

I know it’s been a small sample size but Mac-Turris-Stone has looked every bit as good as Mac-Turris-Ryan. Stone clearly looked like he belongs with the big club. Hopefully he continues his strong play.

    • MethotToMyMadness

With Spezza out of the lineup, we are going to see that Pesky Sens Attitude that we’ve been missing. They seem to spark that type of game when he is out, like it’s an all for one and one for all mentality, even more then we’ve seen in the last few games. I can’t explain it, but the guys really come together in his absence. I see a win in our future.

    • jtf927

i agree. 9mm-spezz-hemsky have been awesome. if the future of our club is with spezza (as i think it should), we should definitely try to re-sign 9mm and hemsky. they will both be able to be re-signed for less than ryan combined. we can put anyone with mcarthur and turris and they will play well. we should also be focusing on re-signing mcarthur long term. it seems it’s either sign ryan or mcarthur, hemsky, and 9mm. i prefer depth vs a singly player. we also need to sign a stud dman in the offseason to avoid a catastrophy again.

      • FistsofNeil25

I don’t think the future of the club should include Spezza unless he devotes himself to playing a 200ft game. I just don’t care about the excuses like “you can’t expect Spezza to play defense” or “he’s not a defensive player” or “but he’s a ppg #1 center”. If you want to be a cup contending team in this era of the NHL you need everyone to buy into the system and to play hard with and without the puck.

That doesn’t just go for Spezza, it goes for Michalek and Karlsson or whoever else has shown little interest in playing on the defensive side of the puck. Karlsson has shown he’s capable of playing defensive hockey, and he’s young, so we can expect him to mature and improve. I’m losing out hope for the veteran guys who still can’t/won’t play defense.

The highlight reel material is fun to watch, but when the going gets tough, every team needs to be able to trust their best players in all 3 zones of the ice.

        • A-Train

          Psst: They’re not trading Spezza…

          • FistsofNeil25

Psst: Don’t be so sure. There are several scenarios that could play out in the next little while..

            1) Spezza re-signed to long term deal
            2) Spezza re-signed to short term deal
            3) Spezza traded
            4) Spezza leaving as a UFA

There are a ton of factors involved in this including the organizations willingness to retain him, Spezza’s desire to stay or go, salary demands, length of contract, health/injury history.

  • Sandy

Just think about this.. Erik Condra has more points than David Clarkson… including more goals…

    • FistsofNeil25

Just think we offered him more money than Toronto did.

      • CUP 2014-15

        Toronto offered more term

      • A-Train

For sure. As much fun as it is to laugh at the Leafs over this one, we barely dodged the same bullet.

Just goes to show that for all the scouting that goes into these decisions, stuff like this can still happen.

        • Zelle

He also could have been a different player on the Sens, like Mac.

          • A-Train

That’s true too. But I gotta say, watching him a bit this season and watching 24/7 the guy seems like a bit of a jumped-up idiot.

      • spezzerman

Sens offered him something, but did we offer more?

        • FistsofNeil25

It’s been mentioned in several places, including here, that he was offered a more lucrative contract by at least Ottawa and Edmonton. I know it’s hard to believe.

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

      Hhahaha wow really?!?!

Haven’t they used up their buyouts already too?

      • FistsofNeil25

They used up their compliance buyouts so they won’t be able to buy him out without penalty.

        • Phil.

If they buy him out at the end of the season, the cap hits will be (capgeek.com):

  • Sandy

Some guy on Hockeybuzz did the math:

i was doing the “math” for fun:

if ottawa goes 6-1-1 (13pts)…..not likely, but also not impossible given their schedule, 2 of the 5 teams in front of ottawa would need the following amount of pts for ottawa to MISS the playoffs

    Det – 5 pts (8 games remaining)
    CBJ – 7 pts (8 games remaining)
    Wsh – 9 pts (7 games remaining)
    Tor – 10 pts (6 games remaining)
    NJ – 12 pts (8 games remaining)

essentially, ottawa would have to almost win out, and detroit and cbj would have to collapse badly for ottawa to make it.

    • CUP 2014-15

not CBJ and DET but one of. Look at CBJ sched.

      • Sandy

Columbus gets 8 pts out of that remaining schedule.. easily.. Chi, Isles, Pho, Dal. Fla..
Detroit probably gets 6+.. 2 games against Buffalo, 1 against Carolina — the rest are tough. But Detroit is playing really well. The young guys are carrying that team. That says a lot about how you develop your prospects in the AHL for 3 yrs.. It certainly pays off…

  • FistsofNeil25

I saw a rumor today suggesting that Luke Richardson could be an option for the Leafs when and if they fire Carlyle. That would not be good.

    • Sandy

      No it certainly wouldn’t…

    • 383

      PFFFFFFFF, they wish.

      • FistsofNeil25

He was drafted by the Leafs and played 5 seasons there. If they offered him a head coaching position he would probably consider.

  • FistsofNeil25

    B. Murray was just on CTV news and he said he likes the group we have and things we’re a good hockey team. He mentioned he doesn’t foresee making many changes this summer. He said he wants to retain Hemsky and add a gritty third line player.

It’s awesome that he thinks that the 23rd ranked team in the NHL is a good hockey team.

    • CUP 2014-15

I think their a good team as well. Just a bad year.

      • FistsofNeil25

Good teams don’t have bad years.

        • CUP 2014-15

          LOL, Come on

          • FistsofNeil25

Give me an example of a good team that has had as much go wrong for them as this team has.

Good teams find ways to win. Bad teams find ways to lose. We’ve found too many ways to lose this year.

          • Jacques

I agree, good teams play two way hockey. This team just plays pond hockey and hopes for the best. The pesky team of the 48 game schedule played the right way!

        • karlssens

          Good forward group, bad defense.

          • FistsofNeil25

The forward group contributes significantly to how bad the team is defensively. It’s not just on the 6 defencemen. The forwards aren’t just responsible for scoring goals and the defence isn’t only responsible for preventing them.

Good teams play well as a unit offensively and defensively. Many of our forwards are either unwilling or incapable of playing away from the puck, and when you combine that with the defensive play of Karlsson, Cowen and Phillips this year, you’re going to have a bad time.

          • Sandy

Half the team is 25 and under. Experience counts.. They will develop together — they more they play the more they learn.. usually. With the budget, this team needs the young guys with the lower salaries in order to be able to sign good top players… like Ryan & McArthur..

          • FistsofNeil25

Hey I’m not saying we don’t have good pieces in place. I think we have a ton of really good young players here and I realize experience will only make them better.

I still just see a few big holes that need to be filled and I’m not convinced that they can be filled from within. I still think that there are a few fairly significant changes that need to take place, and not just the addition of a third line gritty forward as Murray suggests.

        • Sandy

Tampa last year? Colorado last year? Anaheim last year? It happens.. Injuries, etc..

          • FistsofNeil25

Injuries happen sure, but we’ve been one of the healthiest teams in the league. Colorado and Tampa have improved because changes were made. They weren’t good teams last year. They had good pieces in place but they weren’t good teams.

          • spezzerman

ya, and Habs and ducks from two years ago. Happens all the time, actually. And, you’d also have to assume that all of our defense have peaked and couldnt possibly play better or improve. That doesnt even apply to Phillips.

    • Jacques

That is what has me worried.

    • Sandy

IF.. big if.. Toronto doesn’t re-sign Bolland, would he be a good option? He’s had an injury filled season with the tendon cut.. but that guy is dynamite in the playoffs… If they buyout Clarkson they may be able to re-sign him.. Right now they need to sign 10 plays for about 22M cap (if the cap next season is at 71M and it’s not supposed to be..)

    • A-Train

Ug. Hard to know how to seriously to take these comments, but a “gritty third-line player” seems like about the last thing we need.

      • Sandy

        It couldn’t hurt..
He also mentioned the defense did not play they way they were expected. Well a bunch of younger guys… go figure..

        • A-Train

I guess, but a top 4 defenceman and a top 6 left-winger seem like bigger priorities.

I know…easy for me to say, harder to actually find (and pay) them.

          • Sandy

They have the top 6 forwards right now.. IF they keep the same players… and the same combos.
Stone moves down with Hoffman to play with Zibby..
            Neil-Smith-Condra/Greening..
That’s not such a bad lineup up front. But agreed.. they need a good top 4 D.. Issue is the budget…

  • Jacques

I think we should give up a lot less shots on goal tonight. I have a feeling.

    • Sandy

They have played 2 games so far this season against the ‘Canes and the Sens have been outscored 10-4…

  • karlssens

So for the habs/ leafs games it’s going to be what? 60/40 for the visitors? It’s going to be sickening..

  • Zelle

Wier you will be loved by all! I have to say it’s refreshing having someone on the blue line not afraid to just shoot the puck!

  • xiorcal

    Sign him now

  • Moudy Mahfouz

    Hemsky is just too dirty

  • Zelle

Love the pressure Stone and Pageau put in the offensive zone when they don’t have the puck!

  • ProudSens

Was at the game last night with my son. Not easy for him in Habs land. I enjoyed the metal rock. I believe with about 3% chance to make it or worse case a higher pick for the ducks. GSG

  • xiorcal

    Unlucky bounce

    • Zelle

      bad giveaway :(

      • xiorcal

not as bad as this one

        • Zelle

yeah that was bad… coach needs to settle Karlsson down

  • Aaron 2.0

Karlsson not good enough defensively tonight. Needs to think things through a little more.

    • Zelle

      Pageau looking real good though.

      • xiorcal

This is a nice energy line. There not that big but good position player. And will probably bring more scoring chance than gsn

  • Cicero

Sick moves that Hemsky — part Hemmer, part android.

  • Zelle

Great play by Gryba. Definitely tipped that in and chased it just to make a big hit.

  • karlssens

Man Turris just flying out there!

  • xiorcal

Not sure about why they are doing that but banging the puck on the board from behind the net without looking is really not what i call a good first pass.

  • Aaron 2.0

Nice to see Hemsky look just as good away from Spezza. He’s just a good player. Off-season priority # 1 is locking him up, IMO.

    • Jacques

He’s just a really smart hockey player and he’s Also aware defensively!

    • Mat

Actually, the number #1 off season priority should be to hire a really really really good contract lawyer to find an out to Philips’s contract…

  • Zelle

OK bad period for Karlsson so far, not good.

  • Moudy Mahfouz

Karlsson looks like he smoked a joint before the game.

    • Cicero

      The Wolf of Elgin Street.

    • CUP 2014-15

Turris needs to look him in the eye and say WAKE THE HELL UP

  • karlssens

Pretty good period so far considering back to back.

  • Zelle

Sens have good puck possession considering how many faceoffs they are losing.

  • Zelle

Stone, Hemsky and Turris were just plain out stealing the puck from the Canes all period long. Good period.

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Turris line and Mika line skating circles around Hurricanes.

    • Zelle

Only Kassian and Karlsson seem to be really struggling tonight.

  • Aaron 2.0

Really good opening frame by the good guys. Zibanejad should not be buried in the bottom 6. Move him to wing for now. He can develop doing both. Nothing wrong with being versatile.

  • Cicero

A statement game for Zibanejad. The statement?: “Hey yo I’m gonna be your #1 centre!”

  • Jacques

In between periods, Hemsky said that Zibby is the best center he’s ever played with! Haha just kidding!

  • Sandy

Well NJ up 3-1 over the Panthers in the 1st period.. Sucks. Need them to lose — but looking at their schedule.. it’s really an easy one to finish.. Could they sneak in?

  • Shibal

I’ve always said Zibanejad needs skilled players to play with not Condras and Smiths.

  • Jacques

Sens only gave up 9 shots that period. Refreshing!

  • karlssens

    Spezza to LA for Taffoli, 2015 1st, 2014 5th

    • karlssens

      Sorry, couldn’t help it!

      • Jacques

Haha, TUrris and Zibby can do the job! They both play real hard!

  • CUP 2014-15

Zibby going to be an outstanding 2nd line centre

  • Shibal

The problem is when Spezza comes back, Mac does not even have space for Zibanejad on the pp – Stone is always going to be with Turris, Hoffman always takes the point on the first unit, and PW and Ceci are part of the second unit.

  • CUP 2014-15

number one line in Bingo early this year was Hoff ZBad and Stone, how would that look as a third line next year ?

    • Mat

As good as Condra, Neil and Greening would look as a 2nd line in Bingo.

  • Moudy Mahfouz

    Sit back. 2nd period….

  • CUP 2014-15

Canes have no reason being in this game right now

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

    Mika is so good

    • jasonontheoldsenschirp

And Hoffman like wow this guy could skate through worms.

  • karlssens

Mika is indeed playing very well.

  • xiorcal

You have to wonder why edmonton got rid of Hemsky.

    • CUP 2014-15

      He was their Spezza

      • xiorcal

They should have found someone to play with him there. This guy is an elite player.

        • CUP 2014-15

lol, where have we heard that before.

          • xiorcal

I can’t picture Murray giving spezz for the same price he paid for hemsky

          • CUP 2014-15

injury issues, leaves you wanting more. same old same old. Every city has its whipping boys and in Edmt. the question now is who will it be. The same as if we ever see Spezz leave then someone has to take that role.

    • Zelle

I thought Hemsky wanted out of Edmonton?

      • xiorcal

If your edmonton you bring a playmaker to make him happy. Its not like they don’t have the pool of prospect to bring something good the other way.

        • Zelle

          fair enough

  • Zelle

Wow NJ – Florida 4-3 wtf

  • karlssens

This is one of the most complete games I’ve seen the team play.

    • xiorcal

Yep. The only problem is that ward is in the zone right now.

      • Zelle

Sooner or later Hemsky will solve him :)

  • xiorcal

Andre Roy, Patrick Lalime and Benoit Brunet are all working for RDS now.

    • xiorcal

How many sens alumni do we have to cover our game in english?

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

I’m not saying this because I’m a Sens fan [I watch a lot of hockey and like many players], but I seriously think Kyle Turris should be nominated for the Selke this year. The guys has just been fantastic this season.

    • Zelle

After all the Sens fans I had to fight with last season about Kyle Turris it sure is fun reading these comments about him now!

      • CUP 2014-15

Any so called Sens fan that argued with you about KT’s talent last year has nooooo idea of a players ability

        • Zelle

Unfortunately at the time it was most people on the NHL.com boards. Lots of bitching about his lack of points and goals blah blah blah, completely overlooking everything else he did.

          • CUP 2014-15

Obviously they overlooked his age as well, third overall pick and still a pup, you have to be nuts to think he has peaked at this age. Hope you remember at least one you can drill. lol

          • Zelle

I know right! Also he was forced on the first line prematurely because of injuries.

      • Jacques

TUrris is quite the player, the other teams are starting to take notice!

  • karlssens

This is our win! Keep playing hard boys!!

  • Jacques

Man do I love that Gryba. Best penalty killer we have! Look at that Hemsky work hard at both ends.

  • Cicero

There’s been about 20 comments in a row without a grievance.

    Morpheus, what does this mean?

    • Sandy

Because this team has had a good 4 game stretch.

  • CUP 2014-15

dear baby Jesus, please let that be Kassian last shift…….ever

  • Zelle

Oh come on protect yourself, don’t squat down to touch the ice.

  • Aaron 2.0

Pretty much identical interference plays both for and against Pageau. But, for some reason only one is a penalty (against Pageau). When I see things like that it really turns me off the NHL.

  • xiorcal

Dangerous hit by Gryba but to see the guy get up quickly after selling the call was pure bullcrap

    • Zelle

Those hits happen all the time. He saw Gryba and practically bent over, then laid on the ice until the whistle. Pathetic.

  • Jacques

    That wasn’t a penalty

  • Aaron 2.0

Tulusti sees him coming and ducks….

    • Jacques

      Exactly

    • Cicero

He didn’t protect humself at all in doing so either.

    • xiorcal

Still that was a sure call and if Gryba avoided the hit this guy was getting a diving penalty for sure.

      • CUP 2014-15

you mean not do his job??? and play D

        • xiorcal

If its pageau getting hit like that at the other end of the ice we are asking for a suspension.

          • CUP 2014-15

Maybe you are but if he doesn’t bend over to trr to find his balls he gets knocked off the puck and the play moves on. Gryba is not striding into him, does not hunt the head, does not leave his feet does not hit him from behind ????????

          • xiorcal

I know cup, the problem is that a lot of foward know whats coming and sell the hit as way worse than it was.

          • CUP 2014-15

Agreed but not a penalty, JT is lucky he was not carried off

  • Jacques

    PESKY effort boys!

  • karlssens

    Should be 5-1

  • CUP 2014-15

that’s a better second then we have seen in a bit

  • Aaron 2.0

I can live with the ref missing the Gryba hit. If he doesn’t see Tulusti see him, that might be hard to see exactly what happened depending on the ref’s angle.

But, that missed interference penalty against Pageau, when Pageau was given a penalty for exactly the same thing. It’s inexcusable to not ref a game consistently. Either they’re both penalties, or they’re both not.

    • Zelle

I don’t blame the ref for the boarding call. What Tulusti did was pretty pathetic though.

      • Aaron 2.0

I agree. I don’t like the call. But, refs are programmed to watch for anything they think is blind. And, they had the common sense to make it only 2. I get how that can happen, even if I think that one is a bad call. But, that Pageau business is just ridiculous.

      • xiorcal

The big joke is that on the following pp for the canes the refs let them go with interference behind Andy.

        • Zelle

Well with a little luck the refs will see what Tulusti pulled and take it out on the Canes.

          • Sandy

            Really.. sorry that never happens..

          • Zelle

            I can dream :(

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Look at Bergeron’s stats and then look at Kyle Turris. Almost identical. Both great two way players. If Bergeron gets nominated so should Turris.

  • Cicero

Panthers had a better 2nd and chased Brodeur from the net. NJ 4-3 end of two.

  • NickofTime

Should have called up Grant, Ottawa needs size in the lineup that can deal with NHL players. Pageau is too small & too soft for the NHL, he is a decent AHL player but not good enough to handle NHL players in a 82 game schedule. Can’t wait until Stone kicks Condra off the roster as well but that may have to wait until next season when Ryan comes back. This team can be & should be bigger, tougher & harder to play against not smaller & softer, they have already been too easy to play against all yr. Hoffman also has to start contributing on the score board or he could end up like Conacher out the door, Puempel & Schneider are waiting in the wings.

    • Jacques

Give Pageau a chance he’s playing with plugs!

      • xiorcal

Pageau is playing a good game.

    • Jacques

Hoffman brings tons of speed that keeps the other team on its heels!

    • Zelle

Pageau hits harder than most guys bigger than him. He’s also stolen many pucks, and creates great offensive pressure without the puck. Wish people could see past size and goals.

    • Cicero

Grant needs an additional syllable to bump Pageau off the roster. Pageau works better in the OLE song for games vs. MTL. [Disclosure: I'm not a pro hockey manager.]

  • Jacques

    C’mon boys! Big third coming!

  • xiorcal

Potvin is right never bend down when there’s a big D coming your way.

    • FistsofNeil25

LOL are you saying what I think you’re saying?

  • Cicero

I hope they didn’t save their second period effort for the third :-/

  • xiorcal

Starting to wonder if 2 games in 2 days is too much for Karlsson ankle.

  • Jacques

Zack Smith never hits the net??!

    • CUP 2014-15

      Can you say Mike Fisher

      • FistsofNeil25

Mike Fisher without the wheels, defensive IQ and hot wife.

        • CUP 2014-15

          LOL,

          • FistsofNeil25

I miss Mr Underwood. He was one of my faves.

          • CUP 2014-15

Me too but man nobody missed the net with authority more then Fish

          • FistsofNeil25

I know and he was still able to be a fairly consistent 20 goal scorer. Imagine if more of those shots hit the net

          • CUP 2014-15

would have been one of the best 2nd line C in the league.

    • Cicero

He has four more GWGs than Eric Staal.

      • Jacques

        Staal has been brutal!

  • Jacques

    What bull!

  • H POTTER

Don’t know if any of you all notice but since Karlsson two turnover in the first, he has not been carrying the puck out of the zone. Keeps ringing it around the boards, glass etc. Not sure if it’s him doing this on purpose as being mad at what MacLean would have told him or if it’s MacLean telling him to cool it down with the risky plays…

    • Cicero

Giveaways: CAR 9 – OTT 4. I think it’s a team commitment to more discipline in the D zone.

      • Jacques

        More responsible effort tonight!

    • xiorcal

That’s what make me wonder if maybe back to back game might put to much stress on is ankle. He’s not looking comfortable today and I can’t remember if it was like that in past back to back situation

  • Jacques

    What was Karlsson doing there?

    • karlssens

Tried a slap pass but the puck bounced

  • Zelle

Zbad just got hit with the same type of hit that Gryba laid down but took it like a man.

    • CUP 2014-15

And unlike JT Zbad still in the game

    • Cicero

#20 was it? He left his feet on that hit.

      • Zelle

Didn’t see that, but in either case the hit was equally as bad or worse.

  • FistsofNeil25

I love Hemsky’s skills but man I wish he would shoot more.

    • Aaron 2.0

He knows he doesn’t have much of a shot. But, he should do it once in a while anyways. If nothing else, just to throw off the defenders, and keep them guessing. He would probably pot a few here and there in the process too!

  • Cicero

Andy’s a stud between the pipes.

  • Zelle

If Sens were winning more faceoffs the Canes would barely ever have the puck.

  • Cicero

NJD 6-3 over the toothless cats :(

    • Cicero

      SORRY! BUMMER :( DELETE! DELETE!

    • Zelle

No Luongo between the pipes I think. Sens weren’t so fortunate.

      • Sandy

No Carolina took him out. That’s why they won that game..

        • Zelle

I suppose that’s one way to win a hockey game.

  • FistsofNeil25

    Stone is wicked good.

    • Aaron 2.0

Amazing how strong he is for a young guy!

  • xiorcal

This game is going to end on an ugly goal.

    • H POTTER

Has to be one for us though

      • xiorcal

Condra? trying to pass hit the goalie than in the net.

  • H POTTER

Come on Hemsky ! Shoot da damn puck

  • H POTTER

    Don’t like EK’s game today

    • H POTTER

      At alllll!

  • ATFIELD

    Can’t buy a goal.

  • FistsofNeil25

So 9-93-82 is every bit as fun to watch as 9-19-83. Zibanejad is a different player when given good line-mates and more ice-time.

    • H POTTER

      Agree there.

    • CUP 2014-15

So now put that ever as good as number 19 back in there and put 93 with Hoff and Stone, huh, huh, come on you can admit that would work just don’t let 19 and 65 out there together

  • Zelle

Great rush by Smith :O had he not gotten tripped he probably would have scored on the wrap around.

  • karlssens

Zibby is going to be better than his draft comparison Kesler in a few years. This kid is 20…

  • Aaron 2.0

’bout time on a call in our favour.

    • Zelle

Three slashes and finally the way too obvious to ignore tripping call.

  • FistsofNeil25

and Wiercioch has been one of if not Ottawa’s best defenceman tonight, yet this guy has been rotting in the press box all season while Cowen and Phillips struggle.

  • ATFIELD

    Just not ek’s nite

    • CUP 2014-15

It has to be his night if he’s going to be the guy. Alfie was the guy. This is that type of night

      • ATFIELD

He’s having a rough it happens

        • ATFIELD

          Nite I mean

  • ATFIELD

    Wow

  • H POTTER

I don’t get this shit! 4 players looking at staal on a power play, whole another canes player cruising in, no-one notices him and we’re on the freaking PP

  • Zelle

How is that puck not going in?!

  • Aaron 2.0

I don’t know what’s going on w/ EK tonight. I’d be tempted to try Weircioch and Hoffman on the points. Prove me wrong EK.

    • FistsofNeil25

or Ceci…Karl looks off for sure.

  • H POTTER

I don’t like our chances going into OT and/or SO….they should’ve closed that game longgg ago.

  • CUP 2014-15

how many take aways does stone have, holy f

    • Zelle

I was going to say that but I felt like I commented enough already! haha

      • CUP 2014-15

fire away all the better for SC

    • FistsofNeil25

      So good.

  • xiorcal

that was a stressfull 2 minutes

    • H POTTER

How about the OT coming up!

  • Aaron 2.0

Start looking for another colour commentator. Hemsky and Michalek are giving Potvin an aneurysm (lol).

  • Cicero

Karlsson’s definitely hurt. Left leg, likely pain-free with a local, but it’s sapping his stride and pivot on the shot.

  • Zelle

Neil giving a hug to Karlsson haha awesome

    • FistsofNeil25

Probably telling him to step his game up here for 4 on 4

      • Zelle

        I hope so!

  • karlssens

    Need the two points here.

  • Zelle

Do the passes right in front of Anderson make anyone else super nervous?

  • H POTTER

Phillips on the point in the OT makes my blood pressure RISE!!!

    • karlssens

Makes mine rise in normal time

      • H POTTER

        Lmao…give me your medicine

  • ATFIELD

Chug a lug Phillips sloooow mo

  • Zelle

    Woo go Mac!

  • xiorcal

hope they don’t count mac as 3rd man in

    • Zelle

      Technically Gryba wasn’t fighting.

  • FistsofNeil25

    3 on 3? SICK!

    • xiorcal

Pmac is sad he wanted to go with gsn

  • FistsofNeil25

    PHILLIPS ON A 3 ON 3?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

  • xiorcal

    Big rig?

  • H POTTER

With phillips on the ice! Not sick !!!

  • xiorcal

both team are out of fuel.

    • Sandy

      Go with the young legs…

  • FistsofNeil25

    3 on 3…why not go with 2 forwards and a d? ridiculous.

  • xiorcal

how can they dont call that shove in the face of turris?

    • H POTTER

Imagine if they would’ve scored after that on the 2-1

      • xiorcal

that’s the story of our season

  • Zelle

    Man Canes play dirty…

  • Zelle

    Zbad – Turris – Pageau!

  • Aaron 2.0

That last play exposed Weircioch’s only weakness. Not the fastest guy. Really impressed with his game tonight though. Has to be careful not to get caught too deep with his foot-speed (at least not 4 on 4 or 3 on 3 with all the room on the ice).

  • BeJamin

Lol P-Mac fucking 2D and Phillips of all people. Really nice to see one of the teams best skaters in Hoffman not touch the ice in OT so philly can be out there. Christ our personal decisions drive me nuts.

    • FistsofNeil25

      It’s insane man.

      • CUP 2014-15

Its as if he plays not to loose instead of playing to win

        • FistsofNeil25

That’s exactly what he does. So foolish at this point of the season.

        • Aaron 2.0

If the team had a really good SO record, it would make sense…

    • FistsofNeil25

      3 on 3… why not go with Karl+ZBad+Hemsky or Wiercioch+Turris+Mac or Ceci+Hoffman etc…

  • Mark

What’s the love affair with Phillips. Why was he playing the 3 on 3?!?

    • xiorcal

I guess Pmac still as no confidence in Weir. Gryba is sitting for 2 but still wtf.

      • Zelle

Perhaps because Ceci and Wier move up with the puck a lot and Karlsson was already out there.

  • H POTTER

    Can’t watch…email me if we win..lol

  • Terry

    way to go Sens!!!

  • Aaron 2.0

Very strong game for Andy. He had defensive support tonight, and that just helps so much. He looked so composed!

  • H POTTER

    Yesssssssssssssssssss

  • Zelle

Great game by the Sens, honestly they should have won in regulation but Ward had some monster saves. Two points though and a hell of an outing. It’s fun to see them play with pride, I’m loving it even if they don’t sneak in those playoffs.

    • Sandy

It goes to their character.. that they are still trying so hard..

    • Jimmy!

Love it! Loved the 3 on 3 OT action! Loved Andy showing the business in the SO!

      We’re winning bitches!

      • Zelle

I am all smiles right now and for the past week. Not just the wins but how they are winning.

  • Cicero

    YAYYYYYY!!!

  • Sandy

2 important points to keep up with NJ.

  • xiorcal

my son will not be happy but he was in bed for the s.o win in tampa and tonight and up for the lost in miami. This is enought of a pattern for me to send him to bed everytime the sens play for the rest of the season. ;-)

    • H POTTER

      Lmao

      • Jimmy!

        Classic!
Put kid to bed. We’re winning bitches!

  • Jacques

Great game boys! 7 more would be Galactic!

  • xiorcal

Well that was fun. Good night sens fans.

  • Floridasensfan

Pmac stayed with lines, no juggle juggle juggle, sure was nice to see

    • Mat

And he gave his top 2 lines real minutes.

    • Jimmy!

I’m thinking Murray had a little ‘chat’ with him…..

      • Sandy

No, the lines as they are — are playing well.. That’s probably why they are staying together…

        • Shibal

Zack Smith got 18 mins of ice time. If Spezza was playing, Zib would have ended up with about 10-11 mins of ice time.

  • Nicholas Rawlins

Some fan base is gonna be really pissed when they miss out due to those 2 blood points the red wings were given by the leagues.

  • Andrews theory

    Any remaining doubters about Stone?

    Kid is an NHLer…

Going to the Habs game Friday, would love to see this ride continue
