Game Day- Senators visit Desperate Stars

The Ottawa Senators begin a 13 game winning streak and march to the playoffs this afternoon against the Dallas Stars.

Ok, so maybe that’s not so likely but with just 13 games left in their season, it’s time for the Senators to play with a little pride and get their game back on track before the season ends.  The Anaheim Ducks currently hold their first round pick and nobody wants to see that end up as a Lottery pick.  To avoid that worst case scenario, the Sens have to find a way to rack up some points down the stretch.

And it starts this afternoon in Dallas.

While Ottawa is playing for pride, the Stars are getting set for one of the biggest games of their season.  They currently trail the Phoenix Coyotes by just four points for the final wild card spot in the Western Conference and have a game in hand.  The Stars have lost four straight coming into this afternoon, giving up 20 goals along the way.  In fact, both teams have had a heck of a time keeping the puck out of their own net lately.  Ottawa has given up 21 goals in their last four.

Paul MacLean met with the media this morning and was a little vague about potential line up changes.  Patrick Wiercioch has been scratched for the last six games and really should be back in the line up this afternoon.  We’ll have to wait until game time to know for sure.  Here is how the Senators are expected to line up.

MacArthur-Turris-Ryan
Michalek-Spezza-Hemsky
Greening-Smith-Neil
Hoffman-Zibanejad-Condra

Methot-Karlsson
Phillips-Ceci
Cowen-Wiercioch

Robin Lehner gets the start in the Ottawa goal.  Puck drop is scheduled for just after 3:00 PM.

  • Sens613

Play with no regrets and if that 13 game winning streak happens all the better. GSG!

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

HOLY SHIT THE WEATHER MUST HAVE FROZEN HELL!!!!!

Although would still have preferred to see

    Methot-Karlsson
Gryba(or anyone else for that matter)-Ceci
    Cowen-Wiercioch

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Totally unrelated but if anyone is looking for a laugh

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHae-jr30X0

    • Sandy

That was funny.. Too bad it wouldn’t happen more often. I hate when fans bang the glass..

      • Zelle

I hate fans that get up during play. You can’t see anything!

    • thirstytraveller

      Down in front!!!!!

  • Sandy

The next 13 games will tell management which players have the character to come to play and the ones who are just floating…

  • sprucesens

chirp, i could be wrong, but has the draft not changed so that every team that misses the playoffs has a chance to win the lottery, and can win the 1st overall pick, not just moving up 5 spots like before? I thought that was a change made during the lockout. The % was super low, like 2 or lower, but still a chance. something like 25%,15%,8% 3% then like everyone else gets smaller and smaller chances… So technically, we’ve already given anaheim a lottery pick…?

  • Lorenzo72

According to ottawasenators.com, there is no PW46 in the lineup. I hope they are wrong and Chirp is right.

  • thirstytraveller

Prediction of the day – TFC scores more goals today than Ottawa. Senators can’t seem to start well in afternoon games.

  • Sens613

I wonder if Thomas the sens killer or Thomas a la Lehner is playing. Both goalies have been playing terribly and without confidence. This game could be boring to watch or very entertaining.

  • FistsofNeil25

Well this has probably been the most frustrating season in Sens history. At least it was for me personally. While I kind of just want this season to be over already, there are some things that Sens fans can still cheer about.

    1) The B-Sens are back on track and are looking like a Calder Cup contender. They’re an offensive juggernaut and have a decent change of going deep in the playoffs, especially with a probable return of Ceci and Hoffman once the NHL season is over. The last time Ottawa missed the playoffs, Butler, Greening, Condra, Locke, Derek Smith, Wiercioch and Benoit all experienced some NHL games and were able to win the Calder Cup in Bingo. Hopefully we can see a similar result this season. It would be a great experience for guys like Prince, Peumpel, Hoffman, Ceci, Claesson etc

    2) The CHL playoffs are now underway and Lazar’s Oil Kings begin their first round match-up today. It would sure be fun to watch Lazar carry his team to the Memorial Cup tourney, but if his team is eliminated early we may see him dress for a few games in Ottawa at the end of the season.

    3) The Leafs inevitable fall. Who here wouldn’t love to see the Leafs slip right out of the playoffs? Nothing would cheer me up more about this season than seeing them miss the playoffs after holding down a position for the majority of the season. Please hockey gods, make it happen!

    • Sandy

The most frustrating season.. at least to start for me was in 2010…
This season hasn’t been fun either.. but with the young players maybe we should have expected it.
Detroit’s injuries may have gotten worse with Kronwall skating off wobbly after being checked face first into the boards. Can’t count on them now to catch the Laffs..

      • FistsofNeil25

You never know…Detroit, Columbus and Washington on hot on the Leafs heels. I know I’m probably in the minority but I’d love to see Alfie in the playoffs. I’ve also always liked Detroit so I’m cheering for them to get in now that Ottawa is toast.

        • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Yeah, I am totally over the Alfie thing…and don’t blame him so all the power to him…go win your cup!

          • Zelle

I would be pretty excited for him if he won the Cup. I think it’s going to the Blues this season though. They have been my pick from the start.

          • puckoff

Miller gives them a great chance. Goal was their weak point before.

          • Zelle

Yes with Miller they just improved ten fold. Their defense alone usually makes their goaltenders amazing looking though. And their offense is great as well. Great leadership. I think they will go all the way. I know that’s who I am cheering for this season!

          • puckoff

Great points. The goaltending issue was a big one for them. Your point about their defence making the goalies look good is very valid.

It’s eerily similar to the Sens when they were a powerhouse. Great defence, but the defence made the goaltending look much better than it was.

If you go down the list of Sens goalies at that time, I think all most all of them became back up goalies when they left the Sens. That is from memory. I know Hasek won cups with the Wings, but I can’t remember if he was the Wings #1 goalie

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Yeah, I don’t think Detroit has a hope in Hell, either the Blues or Bruins…but would be nice to see.

          • puckoff

I don’t like what happened with the Sens and Alfie. Personally, I don’t know who is to blame, if it’s Alfie the Sens or both.

But Alfie deserves it. He has always given his all to the Sens. I just wish he would have let the Sens sign him so they could have received some value for him if he wanted to leave.

  • FistsofNeil25

Oh wow, if anyone thinks this season was rough defensively, check out these stats from 2010/2011

    http://www.nhl.com/ice/playerstats.htm?season=20102011&gameType=2&team=OTT&position=S&country=&status=&viewName=summary

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

    Don Brennan ‏@SunDoniB 29m
Wiercioch may get in the lineup today. MacLean said decision would be made, based on “health consideration” of another D-man, after warmup.

Unreal that that is what it comes down too….

    • FistsofNeil25

Should have traded Phillips. It’s safe to safe that Wiercioch is as good as gone after this season.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I would have been happy with us getting future considerations lol

        • FistsofNeil25

Since the day we signed him to that contract, he’s probably been the worst player on the team.

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Definitely agree…But I would go further and say since the start of the season.

          • FistsofNeil25

            Cowen would get my vote.

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Yeah, toss up depending on the game.

          • Sandy

He’s 22 yrs old for crying out loud…

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

            And playing horribly

          • FistsofNeil25

Yeah he’s 22 years old but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s had a horrendous season. I’ve always said I still believe he’s going to be a good player one day.

          • The Apostle

You mean the contract he signed in 2011 right?

  • H POTTER

    Lehner again???

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

      Who else would it be

      • Lorenzo72

Hammond. Why not? What is the risk?

    • Zelle

Hey he rode Andy through bad times. So why not Lehner? At least he’s being consistent from that front.

  • H POTTER

Chirp, gotta say though I live how you started the post. I don’t know how the energy and confidence level is in the room but a few games on the road to start a small winning streak is what this team needs and then we never know

  • FistsofNeil25

I still can’t believe how early Boston gave up on Seguin. What the hell were they thinking?

    • aegiszx

Really the same thing Ottawa management probably thinks. Bad attitude = Bad player, cancer, will spread the virus to other players yadayada (Jeff Carter/Mike Richards and their stanley cup/gold medal smilin over at you Philly)

    • puckoff

Tru dat. Actually Seguin is much better at 22 than Kessel was. It’s something like a 16 point difference with 4 less games

      • FistsofNeil25

Actually if you compare the two head to head at every age, Seguins’ numbers have been better than Kessel every year

        • puckoff

That might turn out to be the worse trade of the last decade. When you add in Hamilton and the 2nd round pick to the Bruins, it’s laffable.

  • Sandy

How long before they score? I mean Dallas..

    • FistsofNeil25

      Will Gonchar score? Probably.

    • Zelle

Depends, does Dallas have a player on the team that hasn’t scored yet this season?

  • Spoons

GO SENS GO! They can still make the playoffs! They only need to win 14 of the remaining 13 games in the season! I have faith! GO SENS GO!!

  • Sandy

So they get Lehtonen instead of Thomas…

  • Sandy

Oh yeah.. forgot about Nikushkin.. the one who ran over Andy and put him out..

  • Sandy

    Hey we scored first!!!!

  • FistsofNeil25

Jared Cowen has adopted the Chris Phillips “point” quite nicely. Directing his teammates when he has no clue what he’s doing himself. Nice turnover Jared!

    • xiorcal

Philips used to be one of best shut down D in the league.

      • FistsofNeil25

yeah those were the days. Phillips-Volchie were so sick back in the day.

        • Sandy

          Best was Phillips-Chara…

          • puckoff

Chara- Mezz was very good too

      • Jacques

Used to be! Volchenkov had a lot to do with that too!

  • Mark

    Woooooooot Karlsson!

  • aegiszx

I will never get tired of hearing “Condra’s got it… SHOOTS IT WIDE OF THE NET’

    • Jacques

      I’m tired of it!

  • mr.slapshot

Condra’s shot misses wide… (echos on through eternity)

    • Sandy

Reminds you of Chris Kelly when he was in Ottawa?

      • aegiszx

He’s exactly what Pmac has been preachin’… consistent. What you see is what you get! Can always count on Condra!

        • Jacques

Just like Kelly lets get rid of the CLOWN! He couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn from 10 feet out!

  • Sandy

    “F” off Neil… Don’t give them any momentum… Stupid, stupid, stupid…. I hate these f’in staged fights..

    • Cicero

I thought you were addressing FistsofNeil….

    • FistsofNeil25

Yeah so pointless… Fighting will always be a part of the game but those staged fights are ridiculous. They’re just a reason for these guys to justify their spot in the line-up. Neil doesn’t have to participate in that stuff to justify his.

  • Mark

Just let them play loose Maclean. Let’s see an exciting game for a change.

  • Mark

Good job by Cowen. Offensive dynamo!!!!

  • FistsofNeil25

Good shift from Cowen. Hey wait a second…we’ve heard the suggestions of moving Karlsson to forward, but maybe the real answer is moving Jared up to left wing!

    • Mark

      He can take Ryan’s spot.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Idiotic comment of the day is awarded really early today

        • Mark

I think it’s clearly sarcasm. Get your head screwed on.

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

            Around here unfortunately it isnt

      • FistsofNeil25

No way man. I think he replaces Michalek on the first line. Cowen-Spezza-Hemsky. Problem solved!

    • puckoff

Do you remember during the last Sens game when I commented on here that Cowen was very under rated offensively?

      • FistsofNeil25

I do. It’s too bad he’s overrated defensively at this point.

        • puckoff

Loul, good comeback! I really do think he will be much better next year. Many NHL dmen suffer a 2nd year jinx

Add in him being injured most of last season and the holdout and I think that he has a good chance to improve next season

          • FistsofNeil25

Yeah I agree. He still has a ton of potential. Just a bad season I hope.

          • puckoff

Yep. At his age, it’s way too early to give up on him. Of course he doesn’t even come close to comparing how bad Chara was at the same age.

Chara was -27 at the ages of 22 and 23

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

    Jared Cowen is an enigma.

    • puckoff

Many dmen suffer a 2nd year jinx. Add in the fact that Cowen missed all most of of last season and then had to rehab himself while missing training camp and it’s understandable why he is having a bad year.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Not when he held out for his contract it isn’t.

        • Sandy

For part of this season he was still dealing with hip issues. It takes about 1 yr for it to heal.

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

You do not hold out for a contract when you have done literally nothing to justify it….period

          • Sandy

Well prior to the injury he was playing pretty well.

          • puckoff

He had a very good first year. He was called up to Bingo when Bingo won the Calder cup because Bingo had so many dmen injured,

The reports that came out was he was 1 of the top dmen for Bingo in those games.

Then he was very good for the Sens in his first year. He was physical, fought, hit and scored and was not bad defensively.

Do you remember him fighting Fanoof and beating him and then fighting another Laff in the same game?

  • Cicero

    Potvin is a closet Cowenophile.

  • puckoff

    Go Sens Go!

  • Cicero

I like Lehner’s body language today! The Bear has been poked enough.

    • Sandy

He should get mad at himself for his play the last 5 games…

      • FistsofNeil25

I think he is. One thing I love the about most the Lehner is that he always acknowledges when he’s playing poorly and he never makes excuses.

        • Zelle

Agreed! He always strives to better himself too. I think we are well served with Andy/Lehner, it’s just been a bad season for everyone.

  • sprucesens

wtf phillips. just lets him walk out of the corner and get like 3 jabs at the net…. why not stop him…??

  • Sandy

Come on guys… we need another goal or two to get a gap.. Can never seem to get that 2nd one.. when they need it..

  • Cicero

Hmm…looked like both were just trying to avoid a knee-on-knee mishap…

  • BeJamin

I think Cowen is at his best when he forces himself to skate more and get involved in the offense. His brain gets more engaged with the flow of the game. Still a lot of bonehead errors in his own end but those should disappear with age.

Phillips as always has been terrible. Really no justification for his ice time at this point. Press box please.

    • FistsofNeil25

The only justification for his ice-time is the ‘A’ on his chest. Pretty sad..

  • Sandy

Off topic..in the Tampa/Pitts game.. Tampa puts in Lindback against the superior Pens.. while the Sens got Bishop??? Don’t get that logic…

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Because he used to play for us I would assume

      • xiorcal

He did not have a good game against us either.

At this point of the year they will start resting him for the playoff.

    • aegiszx

Well, the Pens had Zatkoff in net today… so battle of the back-ups I guess.

      • Sandy

So was Lehner. It was odd that it was back to back for Bishop as well… The last thing Tampa needs is for him to get injured..

  • FistsofNeil25

That was a good period for Lehner. Hopefully he can build on that.

    • Cicero

      Yup. He’s showing some grit.

  • FistsofNeil25

Oil Kings up 2-1 over Prince Albert in game 1. Lazar with an assist.

    • Jacques

      Lazar is a Star!

      • FistsofNeil25

He was named WHL first team all-star this week.

      • puckoff

He was very good at the WJC. He was probably the best Canuck. I’m not sure if he will be a top 3 player.

He might turn out to be 2nd or even 3rd line, but a possible future captain

  • FistsofNeil25

Make it 3-2 Oil Kings. Lazar with 2 assists.

  • Cicero

Lehner is keeping us in the game.

    • Cicero

      Love, Cpt. Obvious.

      • Zelle

haha i like you you’re hilarious

  • Zelle

Nice job by Gryba there to cover for Cowen out of position.

    • FistsofNeil25

      Cowen out of position? Never.

      • Zelle

Good job by Cowen to keep the puck in the zone instead of heading off for his change though. Gotta admit the good with the bad :)

  • FistsofNeil25

    Lehner’s got his swagger back!

  • Zelle

Bobby Ryan always setting up Turris for phenomenal chances.

  • H POTTER

Si far Lehner making me eat my words
    I love it..lol

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

    DENIS KILLS ME LOL

  • FistsofNeil25

Can’t wait for TSN broadcasts. I can’t believe our fan-base has been subjected to Denis Potvin for as long as we have.

  • Zelle

Wow anyone see Speeza cover the guy in front of Lehner? Good job!!

    • SensChirp

      ‘jbassdd’ojb’jaosf d’jbasdf’oasdjfbjooasbgfojhbasdf’ojgbasjdfgbdfasdnv dfjbg’afjobg’ojadfbgjfadbg’joadfgojadf’gojnafdjogbafdognoadfjnjofdngonfg.

I mean, no sorry, I missed it. Seems strange that there would be issue with Spezza’s defensive game though.

      • SensChirp

Wait, unless this wasn’t sarcasm. In which case, carry on :)

        • Zelle

That was me being excited not sarcastic. Methot followed a guy behind but then two came out from behind the net, instead of leaving one man in front of Lehner, Karlsson and Spezza setup shot and he couldn’t go. Beautiful!

          • SensChirp

I always assume the worst when people discuss something related to Spezza in his own end. My comment has been edited appropriately.

          • Zelle

Understandable! Rereading it I can see how it could look sarcastic.

  • FistsofNeil25

Dean-o telling us Dallas signed Gonch to a 3 year deal. It was only a 2 year contract. I don’t know where these guys get their facts. Just brutal.

  • FistsofNeil25

    Yeesh… hope Turrie is okay.

  • Zelle

    … *readies stabbing tools*

  • Zelle

There is no way he could see that puck come on…

  • xiorcal

underneat ??? What is Potvin smoking?

    • Zelle

Was it not? Maybe my feed is too low quality, I couldn’t see the puck.

      • xiorcal

the puck was a good 3 inch away from lehner. Easy too see from the replay from above

        • Zelle

Yes there I saw it on the overhead. Defense needed to take that one :(

      • FistsofNeil25

It was lying right beside Lehner. The ref had a good view of it too. Don’t know what the hell Ceci and Cowen were doing.

        • Jacques

          Cowen is Amazing!

  • FistsofNeil25

    Give Lehner some help boys…

  • Mark

    Wow, those cheerleaders…..so hot. Lol

    • xiorcal

I was mad for the goal and once they showed them i felt better. lol

  • Cicero
    • xiorcal

      Good one

  • luckan20

way too many PP for Dallas. Potvin is way off in his analysis.

    • puckoff

Potvin admitted his mistake after seeing the review

  • Cicero

Don’t think Cowen has a mean bone in his body. Would love to see him decpaitate these guys storming the crease.

  • xiorcal

    Nice chance for Green there

  • xiorcal

That goal woke up some of our players

  • FistsofNeil25

    Hemsky is actually fearless.

    • Jacques

At least that crappy slogan applies to one guy!

  • FistsofNeil25

Condra hacked down in front of the net – no tripping penalty.

  • xiorcal

It suck that this goal is prevented because the guy was pushed

  • Jacques

Condra quite the finisher on that line!

    • FistsofNeil25

He was tripped then crosschecked. Guess you didn’t see that.

      • karlssens

        Scoring condra does not

        • Jacques

          He has no clue!

    • Jacques

Still before he got hit the puck was in his wheelhouse. It’s like he’s f-ing surprised its on his stick all the time.

  • FistsofNeil25

Detroit with a 3-2 win over Minni. Now only one point back of Toronto with a game in hand.

    • luckan20

If we don’t make it, then I will like to see Leafs out of play-offs too. However, Leafs are getting back Bolland and Bernier for tonight’s game.

  • Cicero

I think I am going to go on a safari and shoot some fuckin zebras.

    • xiorcal

      a full zeal of them

  • xiorcal

Intermission player interview are so pointless. They either ask boring questions or questions with the answer in it.

  • FistsofNeil25

    4 on 4. Let’s put out Greening-Smith instead of Spezza-Hemsky. Great idea.

  • Zelle

I have to think that the most glaring fault of the Senators this season has been penalties. You can’t have 6+ penalties a night and expect to have the energy to finish off games.

    • puckoff

Tru dat. But aren’t most penalties the result of bad team defensive play?

Players are out of position so they resort to hooking, slashing and tripping to try to impede the other team’s players

  • xiorcal

Was the diving penalty remove from the book last summer?

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

That is a TREMENDOUS glove save by Lehner.

  • FistsofNeil25

    Lehner isn’t getting any help.

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Notice where Cowen was on that goal. Standing with NO ONE around him. Just standing and looking.

  • xiorcal

That face from Lehner is the least happy thing I have seen in a long time.

  • Moudy Mahfouz

Still dont get that Condra no goal..

  • BeJamin

Thanks for getting the puck 200 feet Cowen….. Thanks for covering nobody and having a giant clusterfuck retarded orgy in front of your net… Everyone on the ice.

    • Jacques

      Cowen is terrible!

  • H POTTER

Cowen and Gryba just standing there not knowing what to do. I’m so freakin tired with the team can’t sustain 60min effort

    • CUP 2014-15

22 could have helped. Cowen has the far post and Gryba is on the ice with his guy.

  • Sandy

How many f-saves must Lehner make before they clear the puck or it ends in the net..

    • SENSsmile

      Not enough.

  • xiorcal

I’m pretty sure every coach last words to the players before playing us is: remember guys where playing Ottawa so do not forget to fall to the ice every time someone touch you.

  • FistsofNeil25

We’re on pace to give up 50+ shots AGAIN!!!!!

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

I don’t know if that was a bad attempt at a save or an absolute snipe.

  • H POTTER

    This is just depressing

  • FistsofNeil25

I know the season is over for these guys but it would be nice to see some fight.

    • puckoff

It would be nice to see the Sens at least beat the Laffs. Even more so if the laffs need that game to make the playoffs

    • LeafsSux

      Why start now!

  • mr.slapshot

…and they never won another hockey game again.

  • Moudy Mahfouz

DEFENSE……………..All i can say about this season

    • xiorcal

Really Hard going from one of the best defensive sqad of the league for so long to this.

      • Sensturion

Ottawa hasn’t had a good defensive corps in a while. The goalies were simply able to hide the deficiencies it had last year.

        • xiorcal

Was speaking of the Chara/Philips/Redden/Volchie/Salo/Meza era

  • Nicholas Rawlins

    What a joke

  • FistsofNeil25

This is actually a horrible fucking hockey team. They’re actually terrible. So depressing. Their minds are clearly elsewhere. Just forfeit the rest of the games and save us the embarrassment. Do they have any pride left?

    • SENSsmile

      Nope.

  • Mat

YOUR “SYSTEM”, WHATEVER IT IS, DOES. NOT. WORK. MACLEAN!!

    • Sandy

It’s the same system as in the past two seasons… It’s just the some players minds are not on the game… or Gonchar made that much difference. Now that’s hard to imagine..

      • CUP 2014-15

Or the Goaltending Tandem almost set an NHL sav % record.

        • Jacques

What is the big diff before this year and last year? LEADERSHIP!

  • Sandy

    40 shots — 3 goals.. Lehner is in a shooting gallery…
I’m all for changes coming for next season…

    • FistsofNeil25

I don’t know what changes we can expect Sandy. Melnyk is broke or cheap. Murray and Maclean’s new contracts kick in after this season so neither is going anywhere. Murray’s committed to Spezza, Phillips Neil.

      • Sandy

I don’t mean Murray or McLean.. Melnyk would be nice if he would just get mad and sell… But that D has to be fixed. They can’t go on like this next season.. unless they want to tank for McDavid.

      • Jacques

Committed to Neil and Spezza? He’ll be committed alright if he keeps these 2 guys! Wake-up Murray!

  • Mat

We’ve been losing the same way all season long. What’s the solution? More Neil line I guess.

  • FistsofNeil25

Fuck poor Bobby. He went down hard.

    • xiorcal

      rip 2013-2014

      • FistsofNeil25

I accepted the Sens fate when they lost both Alberta games earlier this month.

        • xiorcal

Wait if the win every other games they get 93 points. There is still hope.

  • LeafsSux

    Say goodbye to #6..

    • Sandy

I missed the hit… what happened?

      • LeafsSux

Just went awkward into the boards

        • Sandy

          That sucks..

  • H POTTER

Maybe now he can officially say he’s injured and continue to suck

  • xiorcal

That was nice. At least Neil made me laugh.

  • Jacques

Dallas gets away with stuff that the Sens never get away with!

  • BeJamin

How hard is it to just place Zibanejad in the one timer Stamkos money spot? Seriously…. Our special teams coaches seem completely clueless.

We have guys who can hammer time like Malkin and Stamkos but we elect not to use them. Turris is good on that one timer spot as well.

    • Jacques

No they’d rather have our Capatin miss the net from there.

    • FistsofNeil25

It’s pretty easy to defend a powerplay when there isn’t any player movement. The Sens just stand still and pass it around. Player movement is every bit as imporant as puck movement.

      • Zelle

That is the most aggravating part of the Sens’ power play. It is the same issue as last year. Whoever coaches special teams needs a serious kick in the ass.

  • GeeGee1313

I love Bobby Ryan…just wished there were more “concerned-looking” teammates around after he went down…

  • GeeGee1313

I’m not sure its MacLean’s system that the problem… it seems like the teams “lack of commitment to the system” that’s the problem… the 2012-13 SENS had nothing else to believe in than the system (star players injured, back-up goalie starting, little NHL experience), so they trusted the system and tried their best… regardless of talent we’ve seen the success that teams (NHL and international) have had when they just stick with the coach’s system…

    • H POTTER

It’s the job if the coach to get all players to 1: believe in the system and 2: actually apply it during the game

      • Sandy

These players are men…. It’s up to them to execute the system… which they haven’t done.
These players like an up tempo style.. but they forget they have to play defense as well.

        • H POTTER

This is not pond hockey! There’s a coach and his suppose to make them play in the system! If the message isn’t going through, maybe it’s not the message the problem not the receiver but the messenger.

          • FistsofNeil25

            The coach isn’t going anywhere.

          • Sandy

Don’t you think he practices, practices and practices that? He can’t play for them….

          • Mat

Perhaps they are making them practice the wrong things? Perhaps they are not using what they knows about the teams weaknesses to turn them into strengths? Perhaps they don’t adjust the plan to the different teams?

And I use “they” because Cameron and Reeds are just as guilty. I don’t think PMAC gets fired, but those 2 have got to go. Like fucking 2 years ago.

          • Jacques

One guy skates around like it’s an All-Star game every game!

    • Mat

      Defensively: shit.
      Special teams: shit
      Team effort: shit

All responsibilities of the coaching staff.

People refusing to see the obvious are the same who continue to use “Sens” and “playoffs” in the same sentence..

      • FistsofNeil25

Blame coaching all you want but the players just aren’t good enough.

        • Mat

          Again, coaches responsibility.

And there are tons of mediocre rosters who perform year in and year out because of good coaching and good systems. Phoenix, Nashville, Columbus the last couple years, New Jersey.

          • FistsofNeil25

So every team that has a bad season has their coach to blame? It’s always on the coach? That’s what you’re saying.

So many things have gone wrong this year. They lost their captain to Detroit. Maclean has sucked. Murray didn’t put the best team on the ice. The leadership group is shit.

It’s not all on the coach.

          • Sandy

Murray didn’t have too many choices of who he got in the way of players.. when you have a fucking Owner who has no money. or what money he makes from the team goes to his other failing businesses..

          • SENSsmile

            You mean, a fuck-all owner.

          • Mat

Actually, we haven’t had a respectable PP since Murray was the coach. And last year’s PK numbers were highly influenced by goaltending miracles but this team has allowed league high shots since the MacLean 200 ft system was implemented. That might have worked in Detroit when they had Lidstrom, Stuart, Rafalski, Chelios and Kronwall, but it might not be the best system for young rookies. The coaching staff should have assessed that last year.

          • SENSsmile

You’re right… it’s not ALL on the coach. However, he’s part of the problem, not the solution. And they have a BIG problem.

          • xiorcal

None of those teams where in the playoff last year by the way Mat

          • Mat

Maybe, but they have consistently over performed in the last 3-6 years given the talent on the rosters.

          • xiorcal

Last 6 seasons Colombus missed the playoff 5/6 Phoenix 3/6 NJ 2/6 Nash 2/6. But i know what you mean.

We most not forget that the sens are in a really bad sequence now, but for most of the year they have been an around or above 500 and that in spite of the bad november they had they where almost in the race for a playoff spot. They are still a really young group and the last ten games are really hard for everyone. This is where the lack of veteran hurt. For a young coach like Pmac it must be very hard to get is message across with the young guys and I have a feeling Alfie was a good tool for him in case like that.

          • Sandy

10 players under the age of 25… 6 under the age of 23.. 3 of those on defense… in Karlsson, Ceci & Cowen.

          • Senatollah

Don’t understand this argument. Sens barely made the playoffs last year in a 1/2 season. If the lock out ended five days earlier the sens would have most likely missed the playoffs. It was an unfair tease

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Holy shit… I leave for a walk at 1-0 playing decently and come back to this…. Where is Ryan?

    • Sandy

      Hurt..

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Uggg well at least people will stop complaining about him then

        • Zelle

Gets hurt on a blocked shot, then hurt on the back check, and still gets no love :(

  • FistsofNeil25

I wish this season was over already. Looks like the players do too!

    • xiorcal

12 game winning streak start monday

      • Lorenzo72

        Tampa? LOL

        • Sandy

Well I’ll be there.. Leaving tomorrow. Maybe, if I can find Bishop I’ll hit him over the head with my umbrella… as it’s going to rain every day I’m in Florida… But at least it will be warm..

          • LeafsSux

Well hope it stops on Thr when I get there for race weekend..

          • Sandy

It probably will, as I’m leaving Thursday at noon..

    • LeafsSux

      It is…

  • senskarlsson57

Hey guys, would really appreciate it if you gave my new Sens twitter account a follow. @sensofhumour1 Hoping to provide a little humour in an otherwise dark time for us Sens fans

  • Doc

Wow, this place if fun during games.

    • xiorcal

More fun than the sens locker room right now doc.

  • thepez

Sad! Once again play about 20 good minutes and then look like a junior team. How many times does Nikushkin have to go by Karlsson before he figures it out. Sorry but not impressed with the effort level of our best player. Looks like he is ready for the Worlds.

    • Jacques

Effort level, look at 19′s effort level, it’s a joke!

  • Lorenzo72

    Good bye mr. McLean.

    • FistsofNeil25

3 year contract extension kicks in after this season. You think Melynk is going to allow Murray to fire Maclean and still have to pay him not to work for us? Not going to happen.

      • Lorenzo72

        It will be necessary.

        • FistsofNeil25

If Murray fires Maclean than he should just resign. How many coaches will Murray have fired? Coaching is an issue this season but the Murray just hasn’t put a good enough team on the ice either.

        • xiorcal

The guy was nominated for two Adams and won one during is first two seasons and you want to fire him for a bad season?

          • Sandy

Agreed… McLean is a good coach.. He didn’t have much to work with.. especially on defense.
How many times on the PP.. the other team gets a 2 on 1…

        • Simple Jack

better assistant coaches will do wonders, especially if they have good nhl experience.

    • Sandy

If the young players played well for him last season.. then why are they not this season?

      • Lorenzo72

Last season was just occasional. Paul Maclean is not a good coach. He made a lot of bad decisions all year long.

        • xiorcal

          What about is first year

          • Shibal

Michalek, Karlsson,Spezza, and Alfredsson were playing amazing.

          • Jacques

And now Spezza blows! Only 13 more games of his great leadership to watch! Amen.

  • SensGod

And you just know Anaheim is loving this.

    • Sandy

If they pick in the top 5.. then yes.. But after that, how good is the draft.. and the player will show up in the NHL in about 3 or 4 years..

  • FistsofNeil25

Well Oil Kings win 5-3. Lazar with 1g 2a’s. At least we have that…

    • Mat

      Hey, Bingo’s doing just fine.

  • Mat

MacLean’s not getting fired. But Cameron and Reeds should. Add Wamsley in there too. Some people on this coaching staff need to be accountable for this shit.

    Then deal with the players.

    • Sandy

I think you have to look at Binghamton to see what forwards can graduate to the NHL.. and what prospects are coming into the AHL to fill the spots..
If they can get Hemsky, Ryan & McArthur signed going forward then that’s good for the top 6.. to go with Turris, Zibby.. and whoever else is kept.
But they need help on D.. and I’m not sure any young guy from Bingo is going to fix this defensive mess.
My suggestion to ALL of the players is to watch this season’s playoffs and take note of what defensive play is all about..

      • xiorcal

        Karlsson-Methot
        Ceci-Boro
        Gryba-Cowen/Phillips

If no trade this is the dcore next year

        • Sandy

I don’t think that is still good enough. Unless they get a really experienced… tell it like it is defensive coach.. that may just be the same issue next season that they have this season..

  • Harv

Hard to know where you go with this mess. All the options have been looked at and discussed ad nauseum. My problem is that the team has not changed since the beginning of the year. All year I have been hearing how they need “to find a way”, how they need to “play better” and many more dumb statements of the same quality.

If a professional team keeps doing the same thing over and over again for 70 games then there are deeper issues than a few bad players, a cheap owner, a poor coach or a dumb GM. The Sens seem to have a) all of the above or, b) a major problem within the team which is going to take a lot more than a few trades to fix.

The Phillips signing is a disaster. How can management not see that? You have to believe that Ryan has had it with Ottawa. I see him in Philly as soon as he can get free of this mess. Karlson plays his heart out and all he gets is huge minutes, losing results and sh– and abuse from many fans. He’s gone as soon as he can get free.

It is going to be a long, hot summer and this team needs to make some big decisions.

    • Sandy

Offensively Karlsson has been awesome.. but he has major defensive issues that have to be corrected.
Karlsson is here for 6 more seasons…
They win as a team… they lose as a team.. but some pieces of that team.. both offensive & defensive have to take a good hard look in the mirror.
They seem to get so disorganized and paniced when they get behind…
The playoffs are done… just play…

      • Harv

Agree with your last, “just play”, Sandy. I know Karlson is signed for 6 years but not sure he is here for six years.

  • Simple Jack

can we send zbad and ceci down to bingo for the playoffs? it would be a great experience for them.

  • Simple Jack

i wonder how Patrick weircroitch would be as a defencive forward and switching to d if needed.

    • Jacques

Why bother, Bingo has a bevy of good forwards ready to make the jump!

  • Jacques

Little stat that Yost had about the game:

We are now seventy games into the season. I am at a loss to describe the decisions Jared Cowen makes sometimes. And, for record, Dallas had 77% of the possession when he was out there.

  • runningbear1974

We did fine near christmas time, when Spezza and Phillips got injured… We did fine when Spezza came back into the lineup as the 3rd line centre… We did shit all year with Spezza as the #1 centre, and with Karlsson playing with Methot…

    • Jacques

      Ex fucking Actly!

      • Sensturion

Last I checked, Spezza and Karlsson were pacing the offense. If it wasn’t for them, these blowouts would be even worse. This losing streak is on the defense and goaltending.

        • runningbear1974

I’m not blaming them… I’m saying there’s a correlation… Our Def has been really bad while Karlsson has played with Methot, I don’t blame them for that… It just means when they play together the rest of the Def suck bad… And, with Spezza, not sure how to say it, but i’m pretty sure the other teams superstars love it when Spezza is on the ice…

          • bluebuyyoo

            Rant on:
Don’t be such a ficking duckhead all of the time. Spezza draws the opposing teams top line every night. Darling boy Turris has done sweet fuck all during this latest slump. Ryan has also been a complete non-factor. Consistent losing is a team effort. Forwards, defence and goalies.

          • runningbear1974

I try and be polite about my views… Spezza does draw top opposing lines, and he’s not great defensively, so that’s a bad combo… I don’t think we can be successful with him as our #1 centre… I am concerned about our identity… And yes it does start with Spezza…

          • Jacques

Keep apologizing for his lazy ass, he’s terrible! Every hockey fan of other teams thinks He’s a joke! Our national team doesn’t even blink at this guy cuz they know his game is SO WEAK!

          • bluebuyyoo

Jacques. Either you are a complete hockey moron or a troll. Likely a bit of both.

        • Jacques

I have no issues with Ksrlsson! I just don’t understand why the forwards don’t react when he pinches. Bad coaching there!

          • runningbear1974

It has to be a good decision… He can’t rush in every time… I’m sure there’s been some talk about that, but it requires the whole strategy to revolve around him if he goes in hard each time… This year he’s been crazy, trying to prove something or something, but he needs to make better decision, less risky for us… I’m sure the coach has mentioned to the other players they will have to cover his butt…

          • Harv

Don’t you think he is trying to generate something all the time because, let’s face it. no one else is generating a damn thing? I think we need to cut Karlson some slack here.

          • runningbear1974

I’m not sure why he rushes in all the time.. I don’t think it’s good strategically… I have no idea how he’s going to develop… He’s got lots of potential, but i wouldn’t make him the captain right now, nor have my strategy revolve around him… Not responsible enough yet…

          • Aaron 2.0

I agree runningbear, there are times this season when Karlsson is trying to do too much, including on the rush. His decision making and timing on risky plays can (and I think will) improve. I think he deserves some slack this year though. If # 65 doesn’t start the rush, we almost never get out of our own zone! He’s practically our whole break-out strategy. The team relies on him too much, and it’s having an impact on him this year. He’ll be okay.

          • runningbear1974

I agree he deserves some slack… Coming off major surgery, and losing Alfie probably hurt him most… Also rumours of a divorce, within first year of marriage… so… things are tough for him… It’s hard to tell how things will develop….

  • Sandy

The only thing at this point in the hockey season that would make me happy… is if the Leafs fall out and stay out of a playoff position…

  • Sensturion

Is anyone aware that, this year’s free agent class is absolute crap? Unless you want Heatley again. Should we get rid of Spezza this off-season, we can be sure of a few things:
    - Unless Murray pulls off highway robbery, we WILL NOT get equal or better value for Spezza.
    - There is absolutely no point keeping Hemsky if Spezza leaves. We’ve seen what Hemsly can do without anyone to play with in Edmonton. It’s absolutely nothing. Hardly worth 5 million.
    - After Turris, Ryan and Macarthur, we have no offense. As much as you may bemoan Spezza’s defensive play, he’s currently our second highest point getter.
    - If you take Spezza, Hemsky and Michaek out of the lineup, Melnyk saves nearly 20 million in capspace. We also fall WELL below the cap floor. Melnyk may be happy about saving money, but that just means we need to spend money on shitty free agents à la Florida. Where are they right now? Oh yeah, BELOW Ottawa.
    - You may think, well we can get better players by trading our unwanted pieces for stars! If we don’t want Cowen, Philips, Condra and Greening on the team, WHY WOULD ANY OTHER TEAM?

So SensChirp and Sens fans… ENOUGH WITH THIS BULLSHIT “FIRE EVERYONE! TRADE EVERYONE! BLOW IT ALL UP!”. Because doing so only makes everything, and I mean everything, worse.

    Rant over.

    • Jacques

Oh yeah pretty weak lets keep Spezza to make the cap floor, trade his sorry ass, he’s terrible! Oh Hemsky wouldn’t be good with lets say TUrris??? Trade Spezza for a couple of good assets. If the UFA crop is weak it makes Spezza an option for some teams, don’t understand your logic on that one! He sucks the life out of Our team, playing this guy 20 minutes a night is like playing short handed. We give up so many shots cuz this guy shows no fight in the defensive zone. If they resign him it will be pitiful for the length of time he’s here! Do people actually look at what he does out there??? Our only winning streak was when he was out of The lineup, no Coincidence there, made me think of last year!

      • Jonny

Spezza has been playing much better than Turris the last 15 games…Why not trade Turris? See what I did there…

        • bluebuyyoo

          Don’t feed the troll

  • aegiszx

FistOfNeil already mentioned it in an earlier post but if Murray fires Paulrus after this season, this organization will officially be a fucking joke. You dont go through 5/6 coaches in 4 season. Remember, this guy won the Jack Adams and made 5-star cuisine out of a bunch of canned food last season.

It’s a lot more than the coach, it’s the assistants who dont seem to be able to adapt their game plan, it’s the defense that doesnt know how to pay defense, its the god-damn owner who wants to put together an all-star team on $50 million dollars, theres so much wrong with this organization and team that no way can you lay the blame squarely on ONE person.

Also, stop calling up the AHL talent just because. You want to see what happens to players who aren’t developed properly? Jared. Cowen. Give these kids some time to learn, some time to mature. Let them get some experience playing against men or until the big club can figure things out…

  • Gordon Ramsli

Organization needs to promote Richardson to assistant either now or in off season fire our weakest assistant coach or both. We need our defense to learn from a real vet a bonus that he’s a veteran who isn’t burdening our roster.

The way our roster is shaped I think we need to adjust our system on the ice. Our teams strong point is offense with average/streaky goaltending with inconsistent and young defense.
Keep the possession aspect of our playing style but our defense need to position themselves to force the shot from the blue line and keep the shots that hit our goalie to be low percentage plays then we gain possession of the puck and bring the attack down the ice.

A fresh start is also what our team needs, A strong training camp for everyone with rookies playing for spots.

    MacArthur – Turris – Lazar
    Michalek – Spezza – Hemsky
    Hoffman – Zibanejad – Ryan
    Condra – Smith – Neil

    Grant

    Meyers – Karlsson
    Methot – Ceci
    Borowiecki – Gryba

    Phillips

    Anderson/Lehner

Stone, Cowen, Greening for Meyers & 3rd round pick

I believe Lazar will surpass Stone on the depth chart and make him trade able to obtain Meyers and Tim Murray gets his kid and we get Meyers to add to our top 4 D

If Lazar plays for the Sens this year i believe it’s RW with MacArthur & Turris, Giving Ryan to Hoffman & Zibanejad

Phillips still plays but I would like him to sit to allow Borowiecki to start playing for us at least 25-30 games, But i doubt it…

Give me this team next season and watch the fireworks! Hopefully the fireworks aren’t against us either! Haha!

  • aegiszx

This just in: Leafs lose! Leafs lose! (Glen Healy is still a douchey blind Leafs homer)

  • PraiseAlfie11

Our Top 6 is perfectly fine. Both mm9 and hemsky should be signed to a new contract.

They NEED to get defensemen. Markov is ufa, so is boyle. Boyle is an upgrade over phillips and markov is your top 4 guy to play with Cowen.

    Karlsson – methot
    Markov – cowen
    Boyle – boro/gryba

This will shore up defense and give some offensive punch.

    • Aaron 2.0

Markov / Boyle would be upgrades (assuming management somehow finds money to sign them both, and somehow they both choose to sign here). Phillips just signed an extension though [sigh]. Realistically, you have to put him in our lineup [longer & louder sigh]. The problem with our D core isn’t really Phillips per se (or any other single D-man), but that management thinks he’s a 2-year solution. Most of us said it at the signing – But, that makes zero sense.

    • xiorcal

      No more Ceci?

  • Jacques

Pageau and DaCosta 2 goals each tonight 6-5 WIN! at least one team on a winning streak Bingo now 5 in a row I think! Too bad those guys aren’t better than 2 of our current forwards.
