Game Day- Must Win Game in Winnipeg

Game Day- Must Win Game in Winnipeg

After leaving Alberta empty-handed, the Ottawa Senators find their playoff chances fading rapidly.  We use the term often around these parts but this afternoon in Winnipeg really is a must win game for the Senators.

Just a quick post for now as I have limited internet access.  Clarke MacArthur will miss the game with a hand injury.  No call up to replace him either which means Matt Kassian draws back in for Ottawa.  Jared Cowen will also play today which means Patrick Wiercioch comes out.  Here is how the Sens are expected to line up for this one.

Hoffman-Turris-Ryan
Michalek-Spezza-Hemsky
Greening-Smith-Neil
Kassian-Zibanejad-Condra

Methot-Karlsson
Phillips-Ceci
Cowen-Gryba

Craig Anderson gets the start for the Senators.

  • Dirk-Diggler

After all the craziness in the past couple days maybe we can gain some normalcy and hope if we win today…. A 4-5 game winning streak is just what the doctor ordered coupled with Montreal, Tampa and Toronto struggling… Let’s hope we can turn it around.

  • Simple Jack

    I’ve seen that title before…

    Go Sens!

  • Senators Pundit

Hahaha Kassian draws in for MacArthur.

  • Mat

Hey Chirp, I think you got the lines wrong. I think it should say:

    Greening-Smith-Neil
    Michalek-Spezza-Hemsky
    Kassian-Zibanejad-Condra
    Hoffman-Turris-Ryan

  • Mat

More important than the pre game routine, the stretching and the warm up for this team, every player should have 3 double espressos.

  • Spoons

Poor Zibby, stuck with shit linemates… again.

    • SensChirp

Won’t stay there. Expect a short bench. Also poor Zibby has scored once in his last 20.

      • Roar…

Large part of that is not being played where he should be. Permanently attached to Turris or Spezza’s hip. It’s funny how for some reason we’ve never tried him in Ryan’s spot on the wing. MacArthur-Turris-Zibanejad just sounds sexy as hell.

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Don’t worry…. If history dictates Ryan will play 12 minutes with the whole fourth line playing more. Leaves tonnes of time for zibby

Pure brilliance let’s put our four time 30 goal scorer somewhere he can succeed… Who needs him on the pp

      • SensChirp

        He’s hurt.

        • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Good then sit him and let him heal…. Like I said last time… All this is doing is running him out of town and turning him into our newest scapegoat

          • SensChirp

If anything people are blaming MacLean not Ryan. They made a decision to play through it and deal with it in the off season, I assume.

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Judging by the comments in here and other places and face to face people are blaming him… I can’t even count the number of times I have seen him referred to as the lasiest player on the team or that he doesn’t care.

          • Phoenix

Its fitting for him to cool down after coming in hot.

  • esk

i cant see this post on the home page eh had to google “senschirp winnipeg” lol

  • SensChirp

On the issue with new posts showing up….

This is from the caching that had to be turned on during the deadline server crash. It will show the new posts if you go to the front page and refresh.

  • i am just saying

    SIGH !

    YET – ANOTHER – AFTERNOON – GAME

    • Colin

They won their last afternoon game in Vancouver. That shitty curse is broken.

  • Phil.

I see everyone is in a fantastic mood today again. No worries. The Sens take this one 5-2.

    • Phil.

And Chirp, please post highlights ASAP as everyone will want to look at Kyle Turris’ sick goal in the second period.

      • Mat

Time traveller there Marty McFly? What else does it say in your 2014 almanac?

        • Paradocs

          The almanac was 1950-2000

        • Phil.

Biff loses at the end, or is that Buff?

  • Rick of the Universe

    Kassian’s back – I smell a victory

  • Jacques

The more Spezza plays the harder it will be for the SENS to win. His minutes should be smart ones! if there are injured guys they should be sat! and we should have healthy bodies from Bingo! Hell, Bingo has a big lead in the standings, they can spare a few guys till our invalids are well! Will be a tough game again, watch it closely not just the window dressing stuff, cuz that’s all that some people seem to notice!

      Hey Chirp!

Any chance of creating JacquesSquawk to give this troll a place to squawk out his daily diatribe?

      Thanks.

      • Yackbacker

        LMAO !

SensChirp could put him on “Conacher waivers”

He’ll be claimed by Stuntman Stupid’s blog.

    • do due dew doodoo

every time I read one of your posts I hear a Donald Duck temper tantrum in my head

  • illdistrict

I hope Hoffman succeeds on the first line. He is a fast skater, makes quick decisions with the puck and seems to be well positioned on the ice in the offensive zone. He actually reminds me a bit of Macarthur. I like the third line, but there isn’t any scored touch. Remember the first season we called up Smith and he could actually pot a goal…

    • Mat

Hoffman needs to contribute offensively ASAP. Not going to get many more call ups if he doesn’t. I don’t want him to suffer the same fate as other really fast and promising call ups who just never produced. Filatov? Wick? Zubov? Shannon? Conacher?

      • do due dew doodoo

Mike Hoffman = Bobby Butler 2.0

a star in the AHL – too small to be a regular NHLer

        • illdistrict

I don’t agree. He has looked very good on the PP. He’ll find success.

  • Millennium

I think it says a lot about our chances for the playoffs that the team won’t call up anyone and decides to run with Kassian. To me that implies they don’t think they can make up the points (and they probably can’t). If it were close, there’s no way they don’t call up Stone or SDC

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I tend to agree…. But here is a rare optimistic/positive post from me lately.

Our record with Kassian in is pretty good.. For whatever reason, maybe it forces Maclean to shorten the bench playing the proper players when they should be played…. Or who knows maybe Kassian is a secret weapon lol

  • Richard Gough

Hockey ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as hockey. But it ain’t about how hard you’re hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that! I’m always gonna love my Senators no matter what.

  • Jacques

Listen , we’ve won 1 of the last 5 against pretty average competition, you all tell me the Captain has been great, well the results don’t back it up! Let’s see after this one! The Leadership is really shining through! Alfie last year dragged this team into the playoffs! C’mon, hope your boy proves me wrong today!

    • the rest of the ducks

      QUACK – QUACK – QUACK – QUACK

    • Doc

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

        !!!

      • Deadly

        Just what the doctor ordered.

  • karlssens

It all starts with 2 pts here.. If we can get the win, it’s just a start. Boys need at least a 4 wins every 5 games remaining

    • nikeb613

wow seems like such a stretch when you put it like that :( lets hope we get some entertaining hockey atleast.

      Go sens go!

  • Roar…

This organization doesn’t know what a must win is. Zibanejad is on the 4th line – although admittedly he probably won’t stay there. And Kassian is in the lineup. Winning is only our goal if we live in opposite land and what you actually mean is losing.

  • T K

Is this the fourth military appreciation game that the Sens have played? They seem to be the Forces favourite now!

P.S. Healey is still an asshole

    • Millennium

      What’s he saying this time?

      • T K

        The usual CBC bias

    • A-Train

Definitely one of my least favourite aspects of watching pro sports. Appreciation nights, Historical tributes, anthems, etc etc….just drop the puck already.

    • Simple Jack

Seems like we are jinxed for those games too, i dont think we’ve won one in awhile.

  • T K

Spezza looks mystified by the rappelling guy…

    • Simple Jack

Its how he gets a military paycheck, much like the marching band.

      • T K

4-5 buddies of mine in the band…

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

God I hope this is the start of a massive run…. Even if we don’t make the playoffs I want to see effort

    • A-Train

I agree. If this thing tanks hard I fear trouble in the locker room …. not too mention the craziness on this site.

  • SensFanInMTL

Is Lehner going to see action for the rest of the season? P-Mac starting the checking line again. Zibanejad on the 4th line. P-Mac seriously needs to go. We’ll just not make the playoffs and wait until the May to get rid of him. Cameron as well. Greening hopefully will be dealt at the draft.

    • Deadly

Let start the coaching carousel again. It was so much fun in the past.

    • Rebel Held Suburb

Cameron is Melnyk`s boyfriend – his spy in the room

He`ll be the next head coach

      • Sandy

He should be fired. His responsibility is special teams.. He doesn’t know what he is doing.. the special teams suck… he’s out of his league..

  • Sensnation

Great penalty kill boys! Good to see the key saves so early in the game.

    GO SENS GO!!!

  • T K

A reputation for taking penalties begets more penalties. Refs are less tolerant with borderline infractions from Sens.

    • T K

My autocorrect is pissing me off today

  • Brock

    Why are they booing Karlsson?

    • SensFanInMTL

      Haters gon hate.

  • Sensnation

    Woohoo!!!

  • T K

    That’s gotta be a goal!

    • Sensnation

      Definitely!

  • Mat

That’s a goal. Shut up Dean.

  • xiorcal

”You can see white from the review but that doesn’t mean the puck cross the line” dumb ass

  • T K

    Ales with 3 goals in 3 games…

    • Sensnation

Really like his PP with Spezza and Hoffman.

    • A-Train

      Liking him. Seems happy too.

  • xiorcal

not a big fan of kassian but what is our w-l record with him now?

    • Rebel Held Suburb

Kassian sitting on the Ottawa bench keeps the other team honest.

      • Mat

Ironically, he hasn’t had many fights this year. 6 fights in 26 games.

    • Brock

I thought he looked pretty decent on that last shift.

    • Sensnation

It’s actually 13-13 this year. Back to normal.

  • SensFanInMTL

Hoffman is doing EVERYTHING but putting up the numbers. When will he get his first damn point!?

  • A-Train

Neil & Spezza chatting on the bench there: “you read those comments on SensChirp? Yeah…really hurts.”

  • xiorcal

Good game today. Just need to keep the tempo for the next 47 period

    • Mat

      hahaha…

  • SensFanInMTL

Has Zibanejad been sent down to Bingo? I am starting to get concerned for the guy.

  • T K

    Ryan on the PK. Interesting!

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

But apparently he is hurt…. Great use

  • Mat

    Nice effort by Anderson. Alas…

  • Sensnation

    COWEN!!!!!!!!!

    • sens88

      I always knew I liked him….

  • xiorcal

    I like this line

  • yannrock

    Good for Cowen!

  • T K

Spezza line on post-goal-against shift pays off. Usually that would be the Smith line and amount to nothing.

    • Sensnation

Chemistry on that line making a huge difference!

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

    We should re-sign Hemsky.

  • A-Train

Think Cowen is chirping Neil after that sequence?

  • esk

    that cbc stream sucks

    • xiorcal

You can remove that and stream and your sentence still work

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

So I am not alone… I am screwing around hard-core with my network trying to tweak things

  • Brock

Loving Hemsky so far. A 3rd and 5th with 50% retained salary is an absolute steal for him.

    • xiorcal

Especially if he click with spezz and we can resign at a decent amount.

  • T K

Maybe PMac was listening to players suggestions on lines & shifts after the Banff vacation

  • A-Train

Great period. Team’s showing a lot of pride today.

  • http://www.crashthenet.ca/ Luc Wolfe

I don’t like Cowen and I wanted him out and I still do, but go for him and the goal.

  • Kumar

So far good first period. Hemsky was good. Hoffman needs a break.

  • Sensnation

    WOOOOHOOOO!!! What a game!

  • T K

Wow. What a crazy sequence. GOOOOOOAL!

  • xiorcal

What a strange start for the 2nd

  • Brock

    lol

  • A-Train

Hemsky and Spezza, i now pronounce you…

    • T K

Is Spezza learning to speak Czech? He should.

  • Paradocs

Got a feeling Hemsky is gonna get Michalek a new contract :S !

    • Richard Gough

Just need a snipper for that line

      • Brock

        Bobby Ryan.

        • Richard Gough

Just what I was thinking lol

  • SensFanInMTL

This is probably the change of scenery Hemsky was in need of. Only problem I have is that now we have 2 playmakers on the line. Hemsky makes Spezza more of a sniper so that isn’t so bad. I’m hoping for a Czech connection between he and Milan. Let’s build for next season!

    • Richard Gough

They should put Ryan on Spezza line with Hemsky and see what happens

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Mac has Bob out killing penalties.

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

WHAT a save by Anderson my goodness.

  • Richard Gough

    Lazar / Spezza /Hemsky

    Hello you sexy line !

  • T K

This may cost the Sens a PP

    • Sensnation

Worth it even if it does

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Neil seems to have taught Cowen something useful

  • Richard Gough

    Cowen is pissed lol

    • SensFanInMTL

Yeah. As much as we pretty much buried him. I hope he can turn his game around. I hate to give up on a young player still developing. Could we recall Pageau or Da Costa for MacArthur?

      • Brock

My money is on Mark Stone.

  • xiorcal

That was elbow to the face. Not intentional but still elbow in the face.

    • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Easily an elbow. What the heck is Galley talking about? It was an elbow straight to the face.

      The CBC man…

      • A-Train

For what it’s worth I don’t think a single hockey fan of any Canadian team things the CBC gives them a fair shake. Of course, Senators fans are right…but still, just some perspective.

        • Sandy

Except for Leaf fans… their team is loved by CBC and it shows..

          • jasonontheoldsenschirp

            Yep

          • A-Train

It’s funny though. Watch a game with Leafs fans and they will claim CBC is always down on them. Ditto the Leafs media: Cox, Mirtle etc. Most Leafs fans will tell you these guys all hate the team.

      • Simple Jack

If its not elbowing, then its atleast contact to the head peanalty. Either way it should be called.

  • Greg

It’s a size hit when any other team makes it, but when Cowan or Gryba makes one it’s a hit to the head.

    • Sensnation

Agreed. Definitely a late hit though, no matter what part hit Condra’s head.

  • T K

I vote to eject Galley from the city. Off to Boronto with you!

  • T K

Galley just disclosed the NHL’s worst kept secret: officials are tainted against Sens due to too much mouthing off

  • xiorcal

They need to create an app that lets you put the game with the broadcaster you want. Image cbc with sound from tsn1200 or the jets radio guys for people from wini

    • A-Train

Turn down the TV and turn up the radio? Bit of a synch issue, but it works.

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

K does anyone have a non CBC website feed… This is horrible, I have a 25 mb connection and it streams worse than anything I’ve ever seen

    • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Choppy for me; after experiencing about ten minutes when it went completely off line.

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Like for fuck sakes I don’t give a shit about your ads… But they stream in Crystal clear hd

    • Brock
      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

So far much better… Thank you!

Relatively new to this cord cutting going to start book marking things

  • xiorcal

    Momentum as turn

    • xiorcal

      and its back

  • Sensnation

    Wow! What a move!

  • T K

    Turris!

    • T K

      F’ing auto correct

      • A-Train

        hahaha

        • T K

Tutus? Jesus, where did that one come from? LOL

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

    Hoffman pass my goodness.

    • Sensnation

      First NHL Point!

      • jasonontheoldsenschirp

And it’s about time. I thought he’s played well.

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

      Unreal

  • sprucesens

HOFFY, hell of a first point. great finish by turris too

  • Sensnation

    The boys are back!

  • Richard Gough

    Hello !!!!!!

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

    HOFFMAN.

  • sprucesens

    HOFFFFFFFY

  • Sandy

First NHL goal… finally. So is guy a keeper now?

    • sprucesens

      always should have been

  • T K

    Hoffman! Grab that puck! Finally…

  • xiorcal

My mood is so much better than during the last two game.

  • karlssens

This game is great for so many players

  • Sensnation

Hoffman now taking Michalek’s contract renewal away! ;)

  • Guest

    HOFFMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • FistsofNeil25

Where the F has this F’n team been all F’n season?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

    Hemmer’s got 4A’s and counting…

  • SensFanInMTL

    HOFFMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Paradocs

Really, really need to get Ryan a goal now!

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

How the hell we shit the bed so bad in Alberta and then come in to Winnipeg and play do much better

    • FistsofNeil25

      I don’t get it either.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Honestly had we played this well we would he looking at our 6th points today

    • Sandy

Do they play ‘down’ to the competition?

  • A-Train

We just expect it now….but that pass from Spezza.

  • Mat

Wow. You guys have to check out Phil’s comment from 4 hours ago.. Nostrafuckingdamus!

    • xiorcal

So I guess we can close the tv now

  • SensFanInMTL

LMAO I love Hoffman! Good for him. Read his lips when he scored. “FUCKIN RIGHT!” I agree. FUCKING RIGHT!!

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

We stole Hemsky from Edmonton. This guy can play hockey.

    • Richard Gough

He just has a lousy shot but time can fix that

      • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Time? He’s been in the league for 9 years lol.

      • karlssens

Shot didn’t look lousy agaisnt us..

  • karlssens

    Get. On. A. Roll.

  • Paradocs

Yo, Phil! Are we making the playoffs?

  • SensFanInMTL

He’s been through a rough journey on his route to the NHL. Great things will happen to those with patience and dedication. Everybody get your Hoffman t-shirts ready. Hoffamania is running wild!

  • karlssens

Hoffman always had the tools necessary to be a top 6 forward. He just needed to do some maturing and growing up. We are looking at the definition of proper development.

    • xiorcal

And then you look at number 2 and you see what happen when you rush

      • Michenator

        Although he’s a had a decent game!

        • xiorcal

Yes but this guy development with the way he was manage and injured is way under where it should be

          • Sensnation

Or maybe his injuries just mean he hasn’t progressed further at this level while he was recovering. Doesn’t mean he was mismanaged, you just weren’t willing to give him this half season to get back up to speed.

          • xiorcal

I would have love to see him play more in the ahl. He only as 3 regular season game with the Bsens.

          • Sensnation

He had 4 WHL seasons and was more than physically ready for the NHL. He really just needed fans to give him time to get back this year as well as not be forced to play 1st line minutes.

Hoffman was a 5th round pick, it’s expected he’d need years in the AHL to develop to the extent he has.

            Different players, different circumstances imo.

          • Sandy

Bryan Murray admitted they made a mistake putting Cowen in top pairing minutes coming off that brutal injury and recovery. Said it should have been softer minutes for him. Next year will tell the tale. An offseason of working out rather than rehabbing..

  • A-Train

Brawl coming at the end of this period i think

    • Michenator

      think you’re right.

  • Paradocs

Buff elbows Smith in the head: No call
Smith retaliates with a slash: 2 mins
Buff re-retaliates with a slash: no call

  • SensFanInMTL

    Hemsky – 4 assists
    Spezza – 3 assists
    Hoffman – 1 goal, 1 assist

    • Michenator

      The game ain’t over ;)

  • karlssens

Hopefully the boys can get a few more goals to get the confidence up!

  • xiorcal

I think this guy think driving an honda is a big deal.

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

I like Kassian’s big boy attitude today. Can’t have the Jets running around bullying our players. They’ve been pretty reckless.

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Yeah its been a good game to dress hin

      • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Smithy’s been sticking up for himself, too.

  • yannrock

    Stupid penalty by Kassian.

    • esk

nahh he needed to get him for that hit on condra

    • Michenator

Winnipeg player lifted his elbow as he was hitting him…. Selfish penalty ya but I don’t blame him… dirty play.

      • yannrock

Selfish indeed. But they should just make them pay by scoring goals and not trying to fight an unwilling combatant.

        • Sandy

I have no use for the ‘figher’ on the team unless he can play a regular shift — a la Neil and Smith,

          • yannrock

Agreed! Nothing wrong with having tough guys on the team.

In Kassian’s defense, I find he has been forechecking really hard this game. I just didn’t like his last penalty

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

      Hardly

      • yannrock

It resulted in a power play for Winnipeg. Good thing they managed to kill it

so no harm no foul. But like I said I would rather have the opposing tteam pay for their cheap shots by scoring goals against them.

        • esk

pretty sure everyone on the bench knew it was coming ..hoping for a 4 on 4 though

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Anderson has finally gotten hot… If we have Any chance of making the dance we need him to be out of this world

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Like I said a couple of days later in an earlier thread… I would really like to see Milo back. I think he’s been decent all season long and even when the team was playing poorly, was never a liability. I think he’s earned a spot.

    • SensFanInMTL

      ok, but one year max.

      • jasonontheoldsenschirp

        DONE.

      • yannrock

I doubt he would sign for one year. He could potentially get more term from other teams.

I like Michalek as well. But anything over 5 mil would be too much.

I hope he signs a 2 or 3 year deal here

        • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Ya 5mil+ is a bit too much.

    • Sensnation

Depends on price. 6 mil no way, 4-5 mil on 2-3 yr term sure.

    • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Ya I’d like to see a reasonable extension for a couple of years max. But I think he’s played quite fine.

      • Sandy

He was really concerned that he would be traded at the deadline.. as he did not want to leave..
I guess.. now.. he can just play. Having a countryman on his line probably helps as well..

    • Senator-Stanley

Time to move on and let some of the prospects play.
I like Milo but I don’t think he is top 6 anymore and very injury prone.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Don’t disagree… But has he been hurt at all this year?

  • Kumar

Great to see Hoffman scores, but I was equally impressed with his one hand pass while falling to Turris.

  • Kumar

If MM can click with Hemsky, then it will be an interesting to watch next season.

  • yannrock

I saw Hemsky play in Hull many years ago. He was amazing then and I have been hoping Ottawa would acquire him for many years now.

I hope he stays for a little while. especially since it seems like he has been playing well with Spezza and Michalek.

Glad to see they found someone who gels with them.

  • SensFanInMTL

    Andi Petrillo wins.

  • MacK

So I just go home and turned on the game delighted to see that Hemsky has 4 pts already, but what is with the 8 mins of ice time? penalty trouble for the team?

  • T K

My washing machine just EXPLODED. Oh well, it’ll have to wait until the game ends

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

    *Gulp*

  • A-Train

Feeling really bad for Bobby Ryan. The guy is really labouring out there and is a shadow of what we saw early in the season. Must be a question of surgery that ends the season (or close to it) but isn’t really necessary in the short term if he can play through the pain.

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Yeah… I kinda wish we were out of it do he could take care of himself

  • T K

    Andy, Andy, Andy!

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

These two teams seem to really hate each othet

    • T K

It should be that way with e.v.e.r.y team…

  • xiorcal

Last year Andy is in goal today

  • esk

icing and penalty very questionable calls

  • sprucesens

poor decision from phillips to not play the puck there

  • SensFanInMTL

Is Hoffman outplaying MacArthur? Or is MacArthur’s eventual return hopefully make this team better?

    Michalek – Spezza – Hemsky
    MacArthur – Turrs – Ryan
    Hoffman – Zibanejad – Condra
    Greening – Smith – Neil

I am confident with Hoffman as top 6. I hope that doesn’t impede his progress as a player. Or maybe Mac goes to the 3rd?

    • Sensnation

Relax buddy, it’s the 1st time he’s put points up. MacArthur has been the catalyst for just about everything positive this year, let’s not go crazy here!

      • SensFanInMTL

You’re right, I hope he gets sent back down by Monday.

  • QSenFan

Andy stealing us a game today

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Wouldn’t say he stole it…. We did score 5… So far

      • QSenFan

and they scored 3. Shots are 40 to 30 for jets with several high quality chances. Sens have been struggling in the 3rd.

        • xiorcal

It was expected to see the jets coming strong in the 3rd

    • T K

Solid yes. Stealing the period, probably. But when the team has 5 goals, I don’t think that it’s fair to say that the goalie is stealing the game

  • sprucesens

good lord we’ve fallen apart this period. way too defensive. keep it up andy!

    • Sandy

      Too long a practice yesterday?

Also I follow lots of hockey guys on twitter. Came across this today.. Hoping for a get well soon for Grady Whittenburg’s son

  • CUP 2014-15

Tough hard fought game, man no love lost out there today. Good on Cowen and Gryba. Physical and both scored. Great time for the Hoff to break out. Big win

  • Moudy Mahfouz

I actually did not watch the game just too changes things up hoping the boys can get a W only to miss Hemskys 4 assist game. Twitter is actually a key spot for updates. HUGE 2 PTS in a must win game!

  • sprucesens

so is mac injured? i missed the start of the game…

    • Michenator

Injured during the fight in Calgary… In Ottawa being evaluated.

      • sprucesens

ah. so hand problems or something else?

        • Michenator

          yessir!

          • sprucesens

hope he’s good to go soon.

      • Moudy Mahfouz

Doent require surgery. might be back next saturday agaisnt MTL

    • T K

May have a boxer’s fracture in his hand. More to follow. He’s back in Ottawa for examination.

      • Cicero

I had a similar injury after punching my monitor last week…

      • Sandy

Ottawa Sun said it’s a tendon injury..

What we need is more afternoon games, LOL

    • Sensnation

Haha, ya at least 3pm ones, not the 12-2 or 4-6 pm ones though.

      • Moudy Mahfouz

that game was being played a 2pm game WInnipeg time

  • Phil.

    Dear Mat,

There you go. Close enough. Clearly, I know hockey. It wasn’t just a wild guess…

    Phil. • 6 hours ago

I see everyone is in a fantastic mood today again. No worries. The Sens take this one 5-2.

And Chirp, please post highlights ASAP as everyone will want to look at Kyle Turris’ sick goal in the second period.2

Mat Phil. • 4 hours ago

Time traveller there Marty McFly? What else does it say in your 2014 almanac?

    • Mat

I gave you massive props for that. Now, can you save us all some time and tell us what comes next?

  • Kumar

Great game by Anderson after having two average outing against the Oilers and Flames.

Ottawa needs to keep this going. Still unclear why Zibanejaad was not given more minutes. He could have had couple shifts on Smith’s line.

  • Colin

So, Kassassination stays in the lineup? :-)

    • Spoons

For some reason, the Sens win when he’s in the lineup.

      • Senator-Stanley

Other players get more ice time.

  • Cicero

On that PP that Hoffman lost his cherry on, I thought to myself it would be sick to see 83-19-68 on the top line. Can a RW like Hemsky ever slip into a LW spot on a regular basis? (Prob a noob Q).

    • Gordon Ramsli

I have been wondering about RW question for a while myself, usually it comes down to a players comfort level on his off wing I just don’t know which wingers on our team can properly play on their off wing.

      Hemsky – Spezza – Ryan
      Can I dream?

  • WaitingSince92

I was never a huge Hemsky fan. I can only hope he continues to prove me wrong.

  • H POTTER

Thank God for the 2 pts this afternoon. Good to see they won another afternoon battle. Sucks that they can’t play a full 60 min. That’s a real head boggler… it’s either they lead by a nice margin and suddenly feel too good and stop playing or they get out played 20min and suddenly start skating but are already playing catch up and it’s too late. To me this is all coaching. You have to get into their head and make sure they always start flying and shooting da puck. When they have a confortable lead, it’s the coaches job to go in between periods and tell them boys, I want 10 goals tonite! So they know that whatever goals they got in they can put more and more…to make sure they play 60 is on the coach, to actually play hard and put em in the net and prevent them from going the other way is on the players. I truly hope for a nice winning streak here. Man has Hoffman played nice..since his last year call up when he got injured after a check, I had already seen how much of an offensive impact he would be
I’m so happy to see him get a nice goal and pick up an assist…it was just a matter of opportunities for him to start scoring..i can just imagine with MacArthur back, Anderson strong play…

  • Aaron 2.0

It was great to see the boys win today (especially in the afternoon), but that game didn’t leave me too optimistic about any sort of magical run. A few thoughts:

    (1) Hemsky is looking great, and playing good with Spezza!!! 4 A and +2. So why only 14 minutes of ice time (compared to 16 minutes for Neil and Smith)??? Baffling….

    (2) Our team defense is horrid. They’ve earned that 2nd worse rating this year, and I continue to be amazed to see the same mistakes over and over again, with little to no improvement.

    (3) Greening – Smith – Neil –> They are doing everything they can to keep us out of the playoffs by insisting on giving the other team power-plays. This makes Maclean look even more insane, as these grinders continue to eat up way too many minutes. I don’t get it.

    • SENSsmile

I don’t know why so many people on these blogs keep defending MacLean’s actions. They’ve even created an affectionate little moniker for him, “Pmac” — which sounds like the cute little Pacman character. Yet, I see nothing cute in Paul MacLean’s character this year.

I think the Jack Adams trophy was probably the worst thing that could have happened to him. I believe that his ego has become so over-inflated that he will deliberately at times stick to crazy decisions and refuse to make changes, just to prove that HE is the BOSS.

When he was in Detroit, he was working for Mike Babcock, who made him look good. Last year’s Jack Adams trophy was a fluke, thanks to many factors: short season, outstanding goaltending (including Bishop, who’s now gone), and injuries to key players that allowed young hungry wolves to play desperate hockey. Well, there is none of that today. This is a real 82-game season and the defensive aspect of the game has been brutal all year. Marginal players are being over-utilized, while stars are being under-utilized. The same glaring mistakes are being repeated over and over. In many games this year, players were simply not ready or motivated.

I can’t lay all the blame squarely on MacLean’s shoulders, but I think he’s part of the problem, not the solution.

  • Gordon Ramsli

Honestly that game almost reminded me of a game I would of seen us playing in the 07-08 season cheered up my depressing Saturday afternoon!

I was not a fan of Hemsky trade rumors over the past 2 years as I figured it would of costed us a arm and a leg. but like I said previously for the price we paid and the potential upside he has for our team Murray and staff deserve a pat on the back!

Our shortened bench method that PMac uses works but I have some issues.

Zibanejad, 7:51TOI Unless he got injured and I missed it but He’s our top prospect and he shouldn’t be getting Kassian’s minutes

Greening, 16:09 TOI: Just no. We brought Hemsky in so we could get Greening out of top 6 minutes if he was playing Between 9-13 minutes a night thats appropriate for what he brings to the table which is a bottom 6 2 way forward with a bit of offensive puck luck.

    Why not just do

    Zibanejad – Smith – Neil

and put Greening to the 4th line minutes.

The impact of an intelligent argument is lessened by an inability to effectively communicate through the use of basic sentence components such as the simple differences between words such as there, they’re and their, or then and than, or the even more intuitive of and have.

No question Pmac has been part of the problem however, how many coaches do we need to burn through before realizing the root cause isn’t the coach himself.

A knee jerk reaction here is a bad idea. If he starts next season horribly then they gotta do what they gotta do

18 games left, 4 points back

Good to see Detroit lose today.

    • Sandy

Just looked at Detroit’s schedule the rest of the season.. Other than playing the Oilers once and the Sabres twice.. they have a pretty tough schedule to finish the season and they have key players out of the lineup. Howard will have to be excellent for them to finish in the playoff race..
So Mtl went 1-3 on the 4 game Ana-La-SJ-Pho getting 2 pts out of 8

  • Deadly

    On the farm.
Now that Prince failed to talk his way out of Bingo,it is time to work his way out.Goal today is a start but he must prove his value..either as an Ottawa player or a valued piece in a move to acquire a player we need.
Sounds like Bingo has some deficiencies on defence so had to add some players at the trade deadline.

    #9 Milan Michalek LW/RW – #19 Jason Spezza C – #83 Ales Hemsky RW
    #16 Clarke MacArthur LW – #7 Kyle Turris C – #6 Bobby Ryan LW/RW
    #68 Mike Hoffman LW – #93 Mika Zibanejad C/RW – #
    #28 Matt Kassian LW – #15 Zack Smith C – #25 Chris Neil RW
extra: #14 Colin Greening LW, #22 Erik Condra RW

#3 Marc Methot LD – #65 Erik Karlsson RD
    #4 Chris Phillips LD – #5 Cody Ceci LD/RD
    #2 Jared Cowen LD/RD – #62 Eric Gryba LD/RD
    extra: #46 Patrick Weircoich LD/RD

    #41 Craig Anderson G
    #40 Robin Lehner G

IMO We either get a centremen to solify a line with Greening and Condra which we ultimately mean we have to many forwards. Or bring in a RW for Hoffman and Zibanejad.

We have all the right parts it’s either wait for development or Sign BIG

    • sben

there is no need for five lines. Plus we have Dacosta pageaua and lazar who’re all centremen. We also have wikstrand who will come up at some point in the next 3 years or so plus boro and claesson. We also have stone pushing for a spot. We’re way too stacked and need a trade to upgrade on our current players not bring in more.

    • Yackbacker

hmmmm – I’m liking what Puempel has been doing lately playing
