Game Day- Lehner vs. Elliott at the CTC

Desperate for a win, the Ottawa Senators welcome one of the National Hockey League’s best teams to the Canadian Tire Centre tonight.

The St. Louis Blues have been among the league’s elite teams through the first 30 games of the season, posting an impressive 22-6-3 record including a 9-4-1 record on the road. The Blues have been scoring goals at will this season, sitting second in goals for behind only the league leading Chicago Blackhawks.  They don’t really allow a whole lot either, sitting 8th in goals against.  What I’m trying to tell you here is the Blues are really, really good.

The Western Conference has absolutely demolished the Eastern Conference this year in head to head match ups- a pain the Senators know all too well.  Ottawa is 1-9-4 against the West so far this season.  To come away with a win against the Blues, the Senators will need to be at their absolute best.

Looks like just one change for the Senators as Jared Cowen is ready to return to the Ottawa blueline.  Cody Ceci was called up on an emergency basis when Cowen and Methot were unavailable but he will stay in the line up.  Ceci has been pretty impressive in his first two NHL games and has earned another game.  As Steve Lloyd points out, they may need to change his status from emergency recall so he can play tonight.  Here is how the Senators are expected to line up for this one

MacArthur-Spezza-Condra
Conacher-Turris-Ryan
Michalek-Smith-Zibanejad
Greening-Pageau-Neil

Cowen-Karlsson
Wiercioch-Corvo
Phillips-Ceci

Robin Lehner makes the start for the Senators.  Anderson was pulled early against the Kings and has struggled badly so far this season.  If Lehner can get hot, I think MacLean would be willing to run with him for a little bit.  The Blues will counter with a familiar face in Brian Elliott.  Puck drop is scheduled for just after 7:30 PM with plenty of great tickets still available.  The Blues alone are worth the price of admission.

  • -It’s not hockey related but good luck to the newest CFL team, the Ottawa REDBLACKS as they make their selections in today’s expansion draft.  While I’m not quite ready to start up REDBLACKSChirp, I am excited for the return of football to  the area.  Will be interesting to see who they snag in today’s draft.  You can watch a live stream of their selections beginning at 11:00 AM right here.

  • Hax

Well if Methot is not expected to play (based on the pairings above) then they can leave Ceci as emergency.

    Has the coach commented yet?

    • SensChirp

Any minute. These are the combinations from the morning skate. We’ll see what MacLean says. Sure looks like Ceci will play though

    • sens23

even if methot cannot play the sens would have 6 roster defensemen available. karksson, cowen, wiercioch, corvo, gryba, phillips. so if ceci plays tonight the sens will have to convert him to a regular call up. emergency call ups only apply when teams have less than 6 dmen available

      • Hax

Is that the actual rule? Could be I suppose but I always thought it was specific to a player. I mean, technically we could play 13 forwards couldn’t we? It’s not really a huge deal either way since he’s waiver eligible. Not even sure why they might have used an emergency recall in the first place. Although isn’t there some limit to how often you can recall players before the waiver situation changes?

        Who’s our legal expert?

        • sens23

i dont see how it could be specific to a player since ceci would of never been recalled if cowen wasnt suspended. so technically couldnt he have been replacing cowen because cowen was out a guaranteed two games and methot is day to day. unless the sens had to declare ceci was replacing methot and that just doesnt get reported. but like you said making the conversion to regualr call up isnt a huge deal

          • Hax

Good point. And the NHL isn’t going to get into things like “well we need a right-handed shot” etc so it makes more sense that Ceci can’t be “emergency” any longer at this point. I expect the team has to give some sort of justification on an emergency recall and the league can technically challenge it. For example, if we still had Schubert and were playing him on the fourth line when Methot got sick the league could technically refuse an emergency recall saying that Schubert could go back on D and Pageau/Kassian could draw in.

Again, not really a big deal I guess but would be curious to know the exact rules around it.

        • SenaTHOR

No one on an EL contract needs to clear. The team is allowed X number of recalls per year.

          • Hax

Okay so perhaps they used the emergency recall so as not to “use up” one of the X recalls until they have to.

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Tough tough tough tough tough tough toughhhhhh game tonight against an extremely well coached and talented team. Sens are going to have to lock it down defensively and avoid the box tonight if they want to win. Probably their toughest match of the season tonight imo the Blues are an exceptional team.

  • Hax

Methot is out. So Ceci can still be up as “emergency” and can play. Or Cowen can slot in and Ceci can go down – but I think they’ll keep Ceci in over Wiercioch or Gryba.

  • Miguel

I have just about had it with PMac
    - pulling a goalie after 3 wins and player of the week… questionable
    - pulling your #1 after a big win in FLA… strange
    - playing CP4 and Neil on you PP… wrong
    - playing Condra wtih Spezza… bewildering
    - playing CP4 more than a Norris winner EK… plain stupid
    - playing Neil more than Turris Ryan… fukin obnoxious
    These decisions cannot be justified,
BUT PMac has the right to make these stupid calls b/c he is the coach
I have the right not to watch this shit anymore, until he explains these idiotic decisions!

    • Hax

I could explain most of those “decisions” to you but it wouldn’t make you less angry.

      • Miguel

you always have a way of making some sense out of PMac’s nonsense, but even you will have a hard time justifying CP4 over Karlsson and Neil over Ryan

        • Hax

Karlsson has gotten back to many of his lazy habits. He’s better now than he was at the start of the season but he’s STILL trying to put the puck through guys at his own blueline. I would assume Phillips is getting more ice because he’s doing his job and listening to the coaches while Karlsson appears to be in danger of being “enigmatic”.

Similar things can be said about Ryan though I personally think he’s playing the right way. Another poster suggested that Ryan’s ice time has more to do with the Sens playing too much in their own end. Ryan’s line is typically the best at getting the puck out which (ironically) results in a line change while other lines get hemmed in and have longer shifts.

Not saying I agree with every move MacLean makes but I hope/assume he’s just thinking more long-term about the players playing the right way than getting caught up in each game.

    • spezzerman

you sound like one of those spoiled brats on twitter who didnt get an iphone for christmas.

If hockey makes you this angry, you should re-evaluate your life. youve been spoiled the last few years. terribly sorry you have to deal with a prolonged slump.

FYI Chris Neil averages 31 seconds per game on the PP. He is getting one shift per game, no big deal considering he is the only guy willing to stand in front of the net. Phillips is 3rd in PP time per game behind Karlsson and Weircioch. Corvo might be the only guy you could legitimately wonder why he isnt getting more ice time on the PP than Phillips but even then its only 17 seconds less. At the end of the day, the PP runs through KArlsson/Spezza and its success depends on their play.

you’re over-emphasizing small samples and making the mistake of thinking this is the norm. when teams lose, coaching is questioned but your pathetic rants are a little over the top. But by all means, carry on being really, really, really angry at stuff you can’t control.

      • boom

So, you’re advising Miguel (and all of us, presumably) to only focus our anger at things that we can control?
So, why are all on this site…?

        • spezzerman

Is it to state you’re so angry with losing that you’re giving up on the team? 3000 – 5000 tickets going unsold every game. I like hockey in Ottawa and I’m trying to point out how ridiculous this finicky fan is being.

          • boom

Ok, that is a fair point. Criticizing Miguel for being angry wasn’t.

        • H POTTER

          Exact

      • Miguel

First of all I am not a finicky fan, always have and always will love the Sens.
I am stating that I have had it with PMac and the illogical decisions he makes that make absolute no sense at all.
Are you kidding me about Neil? He can literally play the game better without a stick at all!
His job is to hit and intimidate, he has never nor should he ever be on the PP, especially with Greening and Smith.
Here is a novel idea, how about you put you best offensive players out there for 90 seconds???
ie Spezza Ryan MacArthur EK and PW or Corvo or even Turris on the point, and maybe just maybe we can enter there zone for starters.
b/c we cant score if we cannot gain posession in their zone.
And please you “super” fan, tell me where in you world should Phillips ever play more minutes the EK?
or Neil play more than Ryan or Turris?
That is plainly idiotic, and not one person who knows anything about hockey could ever justify this stupidity.

        • H POTTER

Some people think they know hockey by putting stoopid stats #… I totally and 120% agree with you. pmac has not shown any jack Adams skills this year. It’s totally understandable to be upset as you are and I am to! I would go further to question Mr spezzerman and his nonchalance towards this ridiculous usage of players and their ice-time by pmac. After I think about it, I think I do understand the nonchalance if I look at Spezza..lol
          Enjoy tonight’s game boys

  • boom

re: Hax ” I would assume Phillips is getting more ice because he’s doing his job and listening to the coaches”

You absolutely have to be kidding, right?

If not, here’s a new drinking game – every time Phillips
    makes a blind pass or
passes to someone who’s covered or
puts a pass in someone’s skates
    that results in a turnover…

    have a drink.

I’ll take a drink every time Karlsson does any of the above. At the end of the night, I’ll be sober, and you’ll be asleep.

Edit – I would have included “every time Phillips points to the oncoming rush, when the only thing he is good at covering is his own ass…”

but, if i did, you’d be be pissed by the end of the 1st…

    • Hax

“Doing his job” as in actually sticking to the game plan. Not suggesting that Phillips hasn’t made mistakes but as a coach when you have to choose between a plugger who’s giving 100% and a skilled player that continues to make lazy plays you’ve told him not to do, sometimes the best way to get the message across is to let the plugger play.

Phillips’ “job” isn’t to be more skilled that Karlsson.

      • boom

See, that’s my problem with Phillips. He tries to make skill plays when he is not able to. Just watch the plays he makes in his own zone. Play like a plug, and make the simple play, and I have no issue with him. He tries to make thse bullshit blind passes and puts his team mates in bad positions.

        • sens23

this is the problem with the entire sens team and it falls on the coaches. far too many non skilled guys are being asked to be skilled guys or are getting the ice time of the skilled guys. phillips should never be below the opposing teams ringette line or leading the rush but he has been put in situations to do so. condra should not be on a 1st line EVER. smith and neil should not be getting more ice time than ryan and turris.

          • Hax

I assume the Condra thing is about A) balanced lines and B) puck possession. Not saying I’d do the same thing of course but it’s not like MacLean is trying to say Condra is better than Zibanejad compared one-to-one.

As for Smith/Neil I think it’s more about Smith’s PK time and Neil’s line getting hemmed in than about MacLean saying “hey let’s play Neil more than Ryan” to his coaches.

          • sprucesens

yeah. but I think even the player’s are confused at this point. Just going by ryan’s “I must have kicked mac’s dog or something” comment. He is probably trying to play the turris line in the offensive zone as they are the only one’s scoring these days. And trying to run the other 3 lines in our own end to get it up ice. Either way, they should still be getting more time. Turris and ryan both drive possession and move the puck up ice every time they are out there.
            sigh

    • Bob

HA!! Karlsson leads the team in give aways!! You’d be passed out by end of the first! Safety first, drink responsible :)

      • boom

Wayne Gretzky (heard of him?) used to lead the league n giveaways dumb-ass.
Guys who have the puck the most tend to give it away the most….
Read my criteria for the drinking game. These are Phillips specialties…

        • runningbear1974

Not all giveaways are equivalent… Sometimes it’s because your pass got intercepted, or you passed it too hard or too soft, or you were off by 15degrees… There’s those types of giveaways… Then there’s the you tried to skate through 3-4 guys, types of giveaways… And then, there’s the blind pass (drop pass), to nobody giveaways…

          • Bob

That’s the point.. You can have that drinking game with ALL players, especially when you have certain rules to the player in question. Phillips is the least of this teams concerns, hell, people wanted Gonchar to stay, 3 years older and questionably slower.

        • Bob

But of course.. wasn’t trying to be a dumbass… dumbass.. the same theory applies with the same and/or different players and the asscoiated “rules”

          • boom

Sorry about the dumb-ass…i fell into the same trap as (some) other posters do. Just because I disagree doesn’t mean i have to resort to name-calling.

            Childish, on my part.

        • CUP 2014-15

The bruins had #77 and called him Ray Ray give away for years, as you said, when you have the puck all the time, your going to give it away more.

  • CrackAttack

I wish Spezza would have a character-defining moment and really show the the team he is a leader. I dream that one day he will say to the coach “put me on the 3rd line with Smith and Neil for this game, and I am going to take an energy role, and go out there and hit everything that moves first, and worry about the puck second”. You know the team would rally behind that! Of course, it’s all dreamland – Spezza’s back isn’t exactly in the best shape to decide to go around throwing the body at anything that moves, but man it’d be nice to see that sort of spirit and leadership shown by him. I look at his play, and I see nothing but lackadaisical effort. Part of that is being a larger forward (you don’t look like you’re skating hard when you’re lanky) but I still think he could do a lot better. That was one thing Alfie could bring to the table – if he wasn’t scoring, he was at least playing hard in other aspects of the game. Led by example.

Ok, back to reality. Carry on folks.

    • ReleaseTheKarlsson

Why does hitting equal “leadership?” Why isn’t putting up points leadership? Spezza has been doing that. Spezza is putting forward a pretty good effort this season, I would say. He seems to be in position a lot better and when he is playing with better forwards he is connecting on his passes a lot more often. Don’t expect Spezza to go out and hit like a Neil or a Smith. That’s not his role on the team, and it shouldn’t be.

      • CrackAttack

I’m not saying he should be a full-time 3rd line grinder, what I am saying is I’d love to see him go outside of his usual comfort level, even for a little bit. Be a bit like “eff this, I am going to try to show a high level of passion and compete level”, and just do something a bit crazy. For a game, that’s all! Overall, I just wish he was more of a complete player – regardless of the back injury, I doubt he’d have made the Olympic team anyway because he doesn’t have that complete game of skill, compete level, physicality on all sides of the ice.

And I LIKE the guy, I really do. I just want to see him be that presence out on the ice like so many other captains are. But, that isn’t his thing I guess. Or he really is still recovering from the back surgery more than we know.

  • Shibal

Is it really hard to make the logical possible for this guy(Mac)? I mean last game the sens did not score until Zibanejad started playing with Spezza, and Macarthur started playing with Turris and Ryan. This coach is producing as much or more WTF! moments than Clouston right now.

  • sprucesens

its tough to look at those line combo’s and be excited. But we all know once the puck hits the ice, condra will drop back down to 3rd line, and zib moves up. Are they just trying to show case condra or something? Maybe get his points up so his value goes up in a trade? Oh well. go sens go

  • Hax

The line combos change a lot. More than with CC even. And while before (with Clouston) it seemed to come from a desperate coach with no plan, I think with MacLean it’s about driving home the system. He’s trying to imprint the system on these guys and some players are getting it faster than others.

I would much rather a set of lines that are more traditional (i.e. skill, two-way, checking, energy) and more set in stone but if MacLean believes the better plan is to get the system ingrained first then I’m not going to pretend I’m smarter than he is.

  • ReleaseTheKarlsson

Ugh. Maclean, it’s easy. Why does every game have to be a “lets try this and see” combo to start and then see lines that work by the end when it’s too late?
Mac-Spezza-Zbad. Put Zbad in the top 6. It’s worked, and hasn’t shown any sign of not working. The rest of the lines I’m actually good with if they would switch Condra and Zbad.

    • runningbear1974

Mac was better with Turris and Ryan… We should put that line back together… They looked so happy together too…

  • runningbear1974

I’ve explained this before about Spezza…
When Spezza plays with less skilled players, he stays in the centre of the ice, and he shoots the puck…
When Spezza plays with more skilled players, he skates to the boards and passes the puck to someone else…
Which Spezza do you want on the ice?

    • Eugenius

I actually prefer the Spezza that gets traded to the Rangers for mcdonagh, boyle and a 1st round pick

    • Jacques

Both of the Spezza’s you describe Suck!

  • cc

I am confused.. Why is Zibanejad not on the first line with Spezza? Why is condra on the first line? Why is Milo so lost out on the ice? Come on MAC – get this team rolling!

  • CUP 2014-15

LOL, Our D tonight might be the softest this league has ever seen and were playing the Freakin Blues, is there a better fore checking team in the league then St. Louis? Get ready for a whole lot of down low play in our end. Saves should have been made last game but great pass from Ceci to Richards on the 2nd goal and he was out muscled on the 3rd in the slot. He’s going to be a stud but he can’t be in this line-up with PW-Soft, Corvo-Soft, and man was he soft on the 4th goal, got walked around and then stood there as the rebound is tucked into an empty net. I would love to be shocked tonight but can’t see us matching up with this D. Need Methot Gryba and or Boro soon…. GO SENS GO

    • hq8

yup, tonight’s game has very high likelihood and potential to be one of those hard-to-digest ones. i think our best hope lies in Lehner keeping it decent. a win though would require a miracle to happen. this is one stacked and nuts St. Louis team with a defense corps built like a tank.

      • CUP 2014-15

Their D is outstanding and I am not sure we are headed in the right direction with our D. How many offensive Dmen can/should a team have? 2 or 3. Obviously it’s not 4. It is called Defence for a reason and I would not trade Karl for any one player in the league but where does it stop, how do you run your PK with oh lets say Karl, PW, CC and JC. If CP or JC take a penalty well, LOL.

        • hq8

well…..STL does have two offensive guys: Bouwmeester and Leopold. Pietrangelo probably counts as one too, but most people call him more of an overall d-man.

i agree though. this is the kind of game you dress Gryba for. hurts that Methot is out. outside of Sobotka, Roy and Tarasenko, STL is big heavy team.

          • CUP 2014-15

The difference here is that JayBow and Pietrangelo are both solid in their Dzone and Jaybow has also thrown some big time hits. Our D is looking a lot like it will have 3 very soft players as starters next year. Karl, PW and CC. Along with MM, JC and most likely Robo. That’s one soft D but you have to like the puck movement. What is the right move on D, does CC’s quick advancement allow PW to be moved and would you move him?

I love y’all for visiting this site on a daily basis but man oh man, you are a cranky bunch lately. I find after every ready through of the comment section I need to go hold my daughter for 15-20 minutes to cheer myself up :)

Hang in there gang. We’ll get this thing turned around! I challenge you each to say one good thing about the Ottawa Senators. Annnnd GO!

    • runningbear1974

Yeah, sorry about that… If there was separate section for bitching, I would spend some time there… I think we all disagree what the problem is including what the solution would be… I wish those injured guys would have stayed injured… It was so easy to cheer for that team last year… This year, I’m embarrassed to talk about the sens to other team fans…

      • SensChirp

You have miserably failed the positivity test haha

        • runningbear1974

sorry, could I have a bad day section then please?

    • boom

Ok, challenge accepted. I, honestly, think the Sens played a good game against the Kings, and deserved a better fate. Down 2-0 after 4 minutes, and they dug their heels and did not fold up their tents and go home.

      • runningbear1974

Yeah and at the end of the game MacLean put MacArthur, Turris, and Ryan back together and they were looking good…

      • CUP 2014-15

O.K. I see where this is going, hell if you can pull it off boom then so can I.
This team has all the pieces in place to go on a long run and right the ship. Lots of fire power up front, strong between the pipes and a young but solid D. We have the Jack Adams award winning coach. Go Sens Go

    • Kohlmanator

They’re called the OTTAWA Senators… Support your team, go to the game and be loud!

      • CUP 2014-15

I go to the games, Cheer the team but will always voice my opinion. Good or Bad.

    • Conor_smythe

Well we have a lot of cap space. Near the top of the league :)

    • sprucesens

we have lots of excellent rookies that are likely to make the jump in the coming years, if we can find someone to take the players we no longer need. And this should improve our team. And this year is likely the worst all the players on the team are likely to play as a collective unit.

      • Jacques

No room for them , Condra greening! smith! and Conacher will forever be clogging up the system,

    • Millennium

Well here’s the real question: is it just all Sens fans right now are cranky, or are cranky fans just drawn to your site?

Certainly our fans have a reputation for being more than a touch overdramatic, and we haven’t had a season this bad in a long time, so we’re not like Leaf fans who have learned how to accept mediocrity. Our team has set its own bar very high by being competitive every single year, and as such the fans have been ‘spoiled’ with success.

      • SensChirp

Good question. Have always taken pride in providing an optimistic outlook on the team and have found that in general, that has been the makeup of the readership.

        • Millennium

As someone who has followed you for years, I would certainly agree. Which leads me to believe the problem is more fanbase-related, and not your readership

        • sprucesens

yeah, the bar has been set high, and we get let down when we aren’t performing to be a competitor. And its very frustrating as a fan to see something that looks good on paper not measure up. I’m slowly getting less frustrated by their play though. Partly because the team is gradually improving here and there, but mostly because I’ve taken the oiler’s fan stance:
“Here comes another loss.. wait what? we showed up and played a half decent game. Hooray! But I bet next game we disappear and return to normal. So lets not get our hopes up”
Might be a crappy attitude of complacency, but it keeps the blood pressure from rising too much I guess

          • Jacques

It’s not just that last year this team fought for every inch and this year they float around , then fall behind then attempt a comeback only to fall on their faces again.

    • hq8

      this one’s easy:
the ottawa senators’ roster looks great on paper. thats a positive.
just dont ask how it looks after the coaching staff has tinkered with it and then on the ice. oh, and the roster includes the goalies too btw – for those who keep lamenting the first 10 minutes of the LA game.

    • MikeS

I like their third jerseys :)

      • MikeS

I generally like to be positive about this team but I have sort of accepted that its now very unlikely this team will make the playoffs unless they change something to get on a roll

    • hq8

      more:

this season ends in 4-ish months, probably sooner for the sens. always good to start fresh and new, ASAP. hey, there is always next season. sucks for those of us who have been waiting since 2007 though – restart your clocks.

oh and anderson, michalek on expiring contracts. thats a good positive.

CP4 expiring contract – but they are making a better attempt at keeping him here than they did with alfie, so thats a double positive. good vet and they learnt their lesson – as long as they include in his contract that he will only play as 6th D (better if he insists on it – its for his own good).

PMac contract also expiring – wait, scratch that, that is a negative at this moment. although keep playing Ryan at Chris Neil levels and hell Melnyk himself is going to fire him. by the looks of it, he doesnt seem too worried about what he is doing next year though. thats too much comfort for a paid job i think.

all that remains is the formality: but Lehner is our starting goalie.

Kyle Turris became the team’s 1LC for 15-20 games…..until the team decided to be politically correct and his wing(er)s got plucked from him.

Zibanejad, as much as the sens organization likes to give mixed messages, is here to stay. Support player be damned.

its bad to say, but i guess silfverberg and noesen both hurting makes the loss of the 1st rounder and the ensuing slump a negative-positive or a positive-negative – depends on your flavor.

melnyk’s revenues are up. thats an important positive.

leaf fans will never like us

1: We got a future goalie that will bring us a cup.
2: We got the best alternate and heritage jersey in the league.
3:We dislike the owner but still cheer for our team. (well I do)
4: If toronto continues to suck we’ll have no choice to make the playoffs
5: We do need a trade though.
6: Me & Chirp got the best daughters in the world!

    • Sandy

Thanks for that Chirp. It does get you down after reading some of these comments..

  • Andersonfan41

Will the Senators get into a playoff spot by February?

    • Eugenius

In the words of a wise man: “Probably not”

  • boom

Ok, here’s a joke to lighten things up….(my last post made me think of it)

A pair of Indians (not a racist joke, they need to be Indians for the joke to work)
went camping, but after they each set up their teepees, they found they were unable to sleep. Do you know why?

    two tents

    • boom

They were too tense….c’mon, that’s a little bit funny, isn’t it?

      • Sensturion

This is a classic “face palm” moment. You should be ashamed of having told us such a horrid joke lol

  • Hax

If everyone else has to be positive does that mean I have to be negative?

  • Hax

I think a lot of the “negative” posters here are as or more committed to the team as anyone. It’s more a reminder from Chirp that while it’s fine to discuss/debate what’s not working and even vent, we should all make an effort to enjoy that we have a team to root for first and foremost.

And that we’re not leaf fans (shudder).

    • MethotToMyMadness

      Well said

    • Miguel

absolutely Hax, but to suggest that those of us that are not happy with the way things are going right now, will stop supporting our team, is very unlikely.
I love my Sens, but am not happy with the way they are playing and the way they are being coached, right now.
however if they were to start winning, with Condra on pace for 30 goals
and Neil pots 10 PP goals, and Phillips gets 15 PP points, I will be all to happy to say to all “I was wrong” however I really cannot see this happening.

  • runningbear1974

I really hope we re-sign Bryan Murray… I love the additions he’s made to the team: Methot, Turris, MacArthur, Ryan, Anderson… All really good quality guys…

    • hq8

      you forgot kassian and conacher……

      • runningbear1974

I actually really like those guys… I feel conacher has been trying really hard… There’s a lot of little things he does right…
And Kassian seems like a nice guy, but not a very good player… Possibly the worst to ever play for the sens…

        • Hax

Brian McGrattan was/is much worse. Kassian can at least contribute to a decent forecheck when asked. He’s no star or anything but far from the one-dimensional type guy that’s only useful when he fights.

    • Hax

And considering the next two years are crucial with decisions on those guys (and others) – I hope Murray sticks around as well. Though I suppose it’s possible that a new GM (Tim Murray) might have as good or even better luck resigning the guys we need/want to keep.

Simmer seems to talk like Methot will be gone since we have so many up-and-coming D, but I think he’s an important guy to keep. Ryan, Spezza and MacArthur too. Anderson seems destined to be traded once we have Lehner locked up.

And of course, we may not have the money to keep everyone we’d like to keep or some of them may demand too much etc. Going to be an interesting summer actually.

  • Hax

Calling a Sens win tonight – 4-3 with Ryan having (another) big night.

    • hq8

just wondering – have you seen the blues play this year?

      • MikeS

I think hes counting on them falling asleep

        • SenaTHOR

6-3 blues to soft in own zone.

          • SensChirp

Or he knows that the #SensChirpCurse is in effect tonight. Sorry St.Louis :)

          • MikeS

            Whats the SensChirpCurse?

          • SensChirp

Anything I bet on in sports tends to lose in hilarious fashion. So what I do is put a small amount on the Blues to win (tonight I said in regulation) so that the Sens may even grab a point even if they do lose.

Listen, I’m not saying I control the outcomes of professional sporting events but….

          • hq8

lol if it works this time – that would be a giant killer. Blues too formidable quite frankly. most complete team in the league right now.

          • SensChirp

            The Curse lives on!

    • Miguel

That’s one thing to say, but I a certain you would not bet the house on this prediction :-)

      • hq8

haha, even Melnyk doesnt bet on sens these days, let alone someone else betting their house on them. may explain why he refuses to spend more money.

    • spezzerman

Well, it is their turn to win…

  • yogo

    ‘Daily Chirp’ or ‘Monthly Chirp’?

    • SensChirp

Busy times for ol’ SensChirp. Add ‘em as I have them. Unfortunately not many “active” rumours right now with the budgetary issues.

To be fair, I did say to expect that the term “Daily” would be terribly misleading.

  • MikeS

Sens have only 1 win in 13 trys vs the west…

  • Simple Jack

Wow, been reading forever, waiting to get setup on redone senschirp site. finally done. Anyways why is there so much negativity? Anderson is not himself, he got ran over twice in a week, it took miller almost a year before he was normal. Where the hell is the goaltender interference calls? they should be 5mins!
Bobby ryan is a gem! awsome player cant wait for the team to click so we can get on a roll. we are pretty much a .500 team right now, struggling to find our identity without alfie. with such a premier veteran leader gone its tough to find ourselves when we are down. macarthur is stepping up, i’m impressed. I was pissed when we signed him but now i’m glad to have him on our team.
who the hell is teaching our D men to drop a leg and try to block a shot/pass ??? your a sitting duck soon as your not on 2 skates. i think kids learn that at a young age.
anyways. cheer up. Go sens, get well andy and methot. yes i said andy, i think he’s got some kind of post concussion issues right now.

    • SensChirp

Welcome aboard! Glad you finally made it over the new site. What took so long??

      • Simple Jack

i wansn’t getting any confirmation emails, still confused thought i was Black Dog not Simple Jack. anyways nice to be back.
i still read senschirp everyday, happier now i can put my two cents in when things go arai around here. keep the peace.

        • SensChirp

Hmm not sure what was going on. Will let the tech guy though in case that’s an issue others have as well. Glad you could finally join us!

  • T K

To me, a key to success tonight will be physical play. When the Sens hit a lot, they do well. St Louis is a team that thrives on physical intimidation by wearing opponents down. If the Sens can up the ante and out hit the blue team, they will do well.

    • SenaTHOR

Karlson Wiercioch Ceci Corvo. Ya were going to be punishers. St Louis is going to have a class action coma to lose this one.

      • CUP 2014-15

That’s my concern as well, I like this roster and there is room to improve but the reason I have carried this silly handle is I believe we are that close. I just don’t know where we are going with the D. We are going as soft as possible tonight against this team? That worries me, but man you know they have the lads to get on a roll. Looking too soft for me tonight on D

      • T K

I get you’re point but it’s a team of more than 4 players. Having some skill-only guys doesn’t invalidate my point.

      • H POTTER

        Hahahahaha

    • Jacques

Yet we don’t dress Gryba one of our only Physical D-men. Explain that one to me?

      • CUP 2014-15

Led the team with 6 hits v buff and another 3 v L.A. Good hit on Brown.

  • Simple Jack

still think the sens are trying to showcase a few players and they are getting ice time more than usual. suspects are condra, michalek, conacher, gryba, weircroitch, cowen.

i still think one or more of these players will moved very soon, just hope it don’t cost us games showcasing.

    • SenaTHOR

Don’t think Gryba is being showcased. He hardly plays.

  • Jacques

If sens start like most of the games this year it will be over early! However, if they can play with intensity from the get go, like they did in the middle of the Kings game and sustain the intensity it should be a good game!

  • luckan20

There is no competition in this game. St. Louis is expected to win this one. All we need is to play strong and make the critiques believe Ottawa can dance with top teams. Lehner needs to stand tall. Any weak goals means there is no come back with solid defensive minded team.

  • Kielbasa

I just hope this isn’t an embarrassing spanking for the Sens as I think it is going to be. I’m tired of the “must win” conversations before each game. A really pathetic circus of a season this has become.

  • Mike

Pageau Pageau Pageau and wtf Zach Smith

  • Mike

Zach Smith needs to be benched what is PM thinking?

  • Tooks

Yeah Smitty needs to wake up, 2 bad penalties back to back!

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Well at least they look like they decided to show up today….well other than Smith the tool

    • Mike

      Lol

    • sprucesens

looks like he’s picked it up now

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Yeah, I hope he makes me eat crow!

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I am not sure how they are going to send Ceci down after this…I think we may have just found our D we need internally.

  • Deadly

Two penalties to Zack,he needs to play softer .

  • luckan20

    Refs are clowns tonight.

  • Aaron 2.0

Great start to the game by the sens. Lehner catching a few breaks, but looks okay. Pageau looks like he’s feeling it. Zebras out to lunch in consistency in this one so far. I don’t have a clue what’s a penalty in this game…

    • Deadly

Don’t think you bench a player because the refs blow two call.

      • Aaron 2.0

Come again, i’m lost? Bench who? Why?

  • sprucesens

what the hell teams IS this!!!

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

The one I expected to show up 34 games ago!

      • sprucesens

indeed, crazy! i missed the first couple minutes, but they’ve looked like they are dominating! what the heck happened all of a sudden

        • CUP 2014-15

heavy two man fore check and they are skating awesome to see

    • CUP 2014-15

lol. I was just thinking the same thing

    • Deadly

      Dare we say ..pesky

      • sprucesens

hell with that. They look dominant. Keep the foot on the pedal

      • CUP 2014-15

they don’t look pesky, they look big and fast with skill, whf

  • luckan20

We need to bury a goal. We can’t afford with out scoring in PP. We suck in the last few games and lets make some amends by scoring.

    • Mike

This is the Blues we are talking about this team was lucky to get one

  • Aaron 2.0

Lots of rubber on Elliott. I know his numbers are good (edit: great) in St. Louis, but I still have a tough time buying that he’s actually good now.

    • Mike

His numbers are only good because he is on a top five team in the league

      • Millennium

Hitchcock has made a legacy out of making average goalies look like Vezina candidates. The guy is an amazing defensive coach.

  • CUP 2014-15

Does ZBad look like a better fisher…NO, he looks like a young Hossa

    • Millennium

Zibanejad drives more powerfully than Hossa though. He’s got a wicked shot, but he also plays with a lot of grit.

      • CUP 2014-15

Let’s not get carried away, they called him Hoss for a reason other then his name. He is a bull, ZBad still has a way to go to get to Hoss and his breaking to the net one hand on the stick and leaning on the D, just a great player.

  • sprucesens

best period we’ve played in a LONG time

  • luckan20

We played a solid ist period. Both teams got 2 PP opportunities. We were much better PP, unlike the games against the Kings or Sabers, but we need to find the net.

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

I miss when Smithy used to fight :( But maybe that’s asking too much he’s playing well.

  • Aaron 2.0

Wow, that was really fun to watch. We came to play! I have a feeling that St. Louis might have taken this game for granted a little bit (not to take away from our own play though). Hitchcock is probably losing his sh*t right now. Sens better be ready in the 2nd because I have to think the blues will dial up the intensity.

    • CUP 2014-15

We all know the push back is coming. Lets hope they don’t break if the Blues get one.

  • Millennium

The one thing this team needs to remember is that St Louis is notorious for being bad in the first, then amazing for the rest of the game.

But that aside, that was the best first 20 of the season for this team. Really dominant play.

    • sprucesens

i think it said the blues lead the league with 34 first period goals. so that might not be accurate

      • Shibal

That was referring to the sens I think.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Pretty sure that was us with 34 first period goals….which shocks me.

  • weirdcock

did anyone see that guy streaking down the aisle in section 303???? crazy stuff at ctc….

    • T K

Streaking on such a cold day? That’s an invitation to get frost bite in the worst place

  • luckan20

`Ottawa usually known to dish more goals in the 2nd period. We are -6 in goals differential in the 1st and 2nd periods. Hopefully we can hold the fort in the 2nd period.

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

WOW Thank you for covering Philips ass Ceci.

He is really growing on me freaking fast.

  • Eugenius

wow….nearly another play of the year

  • luckan20

Spezza hits the post. The first two shifts of this period we royally sucked.

    • Aaron 2.0

They managed not to give up any real solid scoring oppurtunities (thank you Ceci for some really solid plays to save a few chances). D must have been absolutely gassed.

  • Deadly

Tough start , long way to the bench .

  • sprucesens

anyone have those detroit diving gif’s from a few weeks back?

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Why is Jared Cowen scared to shoot the puck?

    • Deadly

      He’s not.

      • jasonontheoldsenschirp

        He is.

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

This could have been a fun game

Why is Jared Cowen…fill in the blank

      …afraid to hit
      …worth 3 mil a year

      • jasonontheoldsenschirp

LOL. I mean I like him.

But I notice he always hesitates when he has a clear shooting opportunity and opts to pass it off.

  • Michenator

    WHAAAAAAT!

  • T K

Elliott never made those saves as a Sen

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I am hating watching Elliott, I am bipolar this game yelling at the screen for guys to shoot from half because he ill let it in, then being upset when they do a nice play that should beat any goalie…but not Elliott

      • T K

Haha, sounds a lot like my living room!

    • Eugenius

      beach ball brian? god no…

  • Bissmeister

I don’t know what it is tonight, but I’m seeing a much more fueled team than the beginning of this season.

  • CUP 2014-15

    Man what a fast game

  • Aaron 2.0

I know the blues are a great team and they are having all kinds of success, but I have to say I don’t really like their shoot and chase style offensively. It seems so old fashion. If you can be quick with the puck out of your own zone, you can have success against this team. They are very tenacious on the forecheck though.

    • Millennium

      That’s Hitchcock. He plays ultra-boring, ultra-conservative, but ultra-success style.

      • Aaron 2.0

I understand how he can get into play-off trouble. If he goes up against a team that is good at moving the puck out of their own end, they’ll barely play any offense.

  • luckan20

How the heck Condra missed on his 2nd chance. Pageau missed the follow through too. Michalek hit the bar. Come on! we are playing well without any luck.

  • T K

Is the islanders mascot a dragon or a crocodile? And why the hell would they even have either?

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

I’m in love with Pag’s game. A true two way centre. Kid is too good for his age.

  • Deadly

    Great save

    • Michenator

So good! I was like ahhhh shiiiiiiYA!!!!

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Also Cody Ceci is damn good.

    • Eugenius

…and this is only his 3rd NHL game lol

  • Bissmeister

    LEHNER

  • Michenator

    fack.

  • Tooks

The Sens have awoken the Beast…

    • Deadly

      So far one breakaway.

      • Tooks

That flew right over your head I see…Stewart is the Beast… and he is now awake.

        • Eugenius

          point proven

  • Deadly

Let’s settle down and get some momentum from our goalie who continues to excel.

    • Tooks

Yep with Lehner atleast you know we wont have to score 4+, lol

  • Eugenius

    well…thank god we started Lehner…

    • Deadly

No,I think anderson made it possible.

  • Deadly

    CRAP, but no panic.

  • Aaron 2.0

Michalek too slow on the stick. Can’t just let a guy stand there like that…

  • Tooks

Karlsson is terrible defensively, just bad…

    • SensChirp

Unfair generalization. He’s not great at outmuscling guys in front of the net. Other parts of his defensive game are actually quite good.

      • Tooks

Fine if you wanna get super picky….He had Stewart, he couldnt stick check him, which is apparently his strong suit.

Just saying, he’s always around or responsible when a goal is scored against us.

        • sprucesens

…he’s on the ice for 1/2 the game

          • sprucesens

so there is a good chance when we lose games, he is getting scored on. But he also out there getting points and leading our offense

          • Tooks

Yep, way too much. Hurts him in the long run.

          • sprucesens

i doubt it. all the best D play that much. If he’s not too tired and not getting banged up, get him out there. He’s the best player we have. If he’s making bad plays and costing us games, yeah, he needs less time. If not, he starts all our offense, and is no worse defensively than the rest of the D, aside from maybe methot

          • Tooks

He has cost us games this year. I dont mind him playing 27min a game but not over a minute a shift, thats where ALL his mistakes come from…fatigue.

          • sprucesens

i’m sure nobody including him, doesn’t want him to be on the ice for a minute

          • Tooks

Well he has been, many times and has cost us goals.

        • SensChirp

When it changes from a skating, moving your feet, stick checking, angles game to a stand still and shove someone, he struggles. Not surprising. Stewart is a big dude.

Does not mean “he’s bad defensively”

          • Tooks

Nevermind, you have your Sens goggles on. Karlsson has not struggled on D this year. He must be +7 with all his pts scored…

    • SenaTHOR

Only when the other team has the puck.

    • Aaron 2.0

That whole play is tough to criticize. Cowen caught a weird edge and slid behind the net. Karlsson was the only defender. If he takes the player then somebody finds open space on the other side of the net. I’d put the miscue more on the fowards to pick up the stick so Karlsson can protect cross-crease. But, things happen so fast. Cowen losing his edge was unfortunate.

  • Millennium

Ryan looks like he hurt his neck on that play. That’s a direct head into the boards. ugh.

  • Aaron 2.0

It sucks to be chasing again. Period was pretty even. Sens played good. Need to bury those chances.

  • Eugenius

fans need to get in elliott’s head

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

I know we’re down…. but man it’s hard to blame the guys. They’re playing quite well [relative to the rest of the season]. Need to generate more shots in the third play hungry and we’ll be alright.

    GSG

    • Eugenius

yep, keep crashing the net, brian will choke. come on boys!

  • luckan20

Last goal is a momentum shift. I hope we don’t leak more goals.

  • Jacques

When the second Stewart goal went in you see Old Spezz finally crossing our own Blue line hustling hard to get back. great effort big boy! It’s becoming comical. At least Michalek was in the same postal code as the goal scorer.

    • Tooks

Haha funny, Spezza had nothing to do with the goal, we had 4 Sens there already…Cowen, Karlsson, Mac and MM9.

      Funny tho.

  • T K

It’s odd how fast people jump on and off the bandwagon. How some players can do no good regardless of strong play. How other players glaring mistakes are ignored because these darlings can do no wrong. Criticize, criticize, criticize…

Some critics need to lace up some skates and go get their assess handed to them by the 6 worst players in the NHL.

    • Eugenius

which players are you referring to?

      • SensFanInMTL

Tony Twist, Trevor Gillies. Those 2 of 6 that we would get our asses handed to if we as critics, ever faced them.

        • SensFanInMTL

I cannot figure out the other 4 however.

          • SensFanInMTL

Oh. Add John Scott & Andrew Peters so we need 2 more.

    • Millennium

I agree with the bandwagon comment, not so much with the 2nd half of your comment.

      • sprucesens

yeah, i’m not that good, and only play beer league now, but i could probably make a couple goons look terrible on a few plays. I bet there are thousands of people not even playing recreational hockey that can. lol.

    • sprucesens

i would say today most of our players have had strong games. That includes the players that most of us criticize on a daily basis. Greening has been very strong today. Conacher has been so so, and condra has mostly just been in the way on a few plays. But he had a few chances too. Ryan has made some sick moves. Hopefully he is ok. I think he has the best hands we’ve seen from any senator. Seems to more successful one on one than spezza. Turris is pretty good though too

  • SenaTHOR

    13 giveaways in 2 periods..ouch

  • Jacques

Chirp wants positive, here ya go, man do I like Ceci’s game! This kid has tons of poise with the puck. I want to see more of him and less of Spezz on the Powerplay! We will maintain zone presence this way. Our better pp has been with 5-7-16-9-46 or65.

    • sprucesens

i would say spezza has actually had one of his better games this year. but i do like seeing more ceci

      • Jacques

Can we get Pageau out there a bit too?

  • Millennium

The Ceci experiment is awesome, although is throw’s Zibanejad’s handling into sharp contrast. Clearly Mac is willing to give certain players a few games with big minutes, just not Zbad. I just wish we knew what Mac’s reasoning is, because it seems completely irrational.

    • Shibal

I was thinking the same thing. But Zib is getting alot of ice time today.

      • Millennium

Fair point, he does seem to be on quite a bit tonight.

    • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Agreed. I’ve been trying to wrap my head around the Mika bias since training camp. It doesn’t make any sense. All the guys does it play good hockey.

Don’t understand Mac and his decisions this season.

  • Millennium

    Ryan is back. Thanks god.

  • SenaTHOR

    Need a new advanced stat
    BY – battle won
BL- battle lost. Some of our defense would be very low.

    • sprucesens

i would hate to be that stat guy. would be very busy. lol

    • CUP 2014-15

They can sure skate though…I agree we need more D from our D

  • T K

Lol. I doubt Jackman will even be able to see after that tilt. Multiple shots right to the back of the head (the lobe of the brain responsible for vision).

  • Eugenius

the boys starting to show a little heart. i like it!!!

  • Tooks

    FUCKING SHOOT BOBBY!

    • T K

      Maybe he heard you

      • Tooks

Thats how it should be!! He’s the damn SNIPER! lol

  • Deadly

    Beauty

  • sprucesens

    wooooooo bobby

  • SensFanInMTL

That pass just impregnated every woman in the arena.

  • Jacques

    Now that is a goal!

  • sprucesens

    HELL of a pass

  • Aaron 2.0

All i’m going to say is WOW.

  • sprucesens

this is what happens when you play turris and bobby ryan more than smith and neil.

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

I HAVE THE BIGGEST MAN CRUSH ON BOBBY RYAN

    • Eugenius

      filthy filthy mitts

      • sprucesens

i’m so glad i got my wish with the trade for him. I was swooning over it the very first time there was a rumour in anaheim of him being on the trading block. Thank you murray.

        • Eugenius

oh for sure. kid’s a beauty

  • Jacques

Ceci is going to bethe other threat to compliment 65. Bobby looking like 8 million bucks! Sign here bro!

    • jasonontheoldsenschirp

      Wish. But doubt he will.

      • Aaron 2.0

If he doesn’t re-sign, we made a big mistake acquiring him…

        • jasonontheoldsenschirp

          Yep.

  • Jacques

TUrris not a number one centerman?????? Who said that? He’s amazing! What a f-ing trade that was!

    • Sandy

He is growing into one.. that’s for sure..
But a lot last season said he wasn’t ready. But him playing in Spezza’s role last season sure helped him mature as a player..

      • Tooks

Yes like Sandy said, Turris looked terrible last year in Spezza’s shoes. He’s the perfect 2C.

  • Sandy

Rolling 4 lines most nights will help this team in the long run. Play as hard as you can for your shift and by the end of the game they are still fresh while hopefully wearing down the other team a little..
IF they continue to play the way they are tonight — then the wins will come.

    • sprucesens

thats key. CONTINUE to play like this. Not fall back on old habits. THESE are the kinds of efforts that fans want, regardless of which column we end up in. Thats what puts fans in the seats

      • Michenator

        so true…

  • CUP 2014-15

O.K. SC When are we going to start calling him the Ryan Express

  • Sandy

When can they start re-negotiating with Ryan and Spezza as well?
    Is it after July 1st?

    • luckan20

      Yes. After July

  • SenaTHOR

Might be early but I think Ceci is ahead of PW 46 in his overall game.

    • Millennium

I’d put most of our D core above Wiercioch right now. Gryba and Boro inlcuded. He’s had a rough season, but Mac seems to like him

    • Jacques

      Cowen-Karlsson
      Methot-Ceci

And people were saying he wouldn’t be ready.
I saw a few Bingo games and Ceci looked pretty good and confident.

    • Tooks

Yeah pretty much ahead of everyone, espacially Cowen.
      Methot Karlsson
      PW46 Ceci
      Boro Gryba

  • Sandy

I missed what Dean Brown said there… Who is out the rest of the game with an upper body injury?

    • T K

      Backes

      • Sandy

        Thanks

      • Sandy

NHL.com had the replay of the injury.. He was hit by Greening…

    • Deadly

      Backlund

  • Deadly

Unfortunately this season has made me a clock watcher..

  • CUP 2014-15

    Pitt 3, T.O. 1 Final

  • Aaron 2.0

Canadian Tire commercials are actually pretty funny.

  • CUP 2014-15

always scared when 77 and 46 are out there together.

    • Sandy

I was surprised that Gryba wasn’t in the lineup considering how tough the Blues are..

      • CUP 2014-15

unfortunately I think he’s done, they just don’t seem to give him 3 games in a row. He wouldn’t have played two if not for the suspension.

        • SenaTHOR

This is a team that never had any plans for him. Poor kid is caught in limbo. Really needs to get moved for his sake.

          • CUP 2014-15

Agreed, Can’t keep everyone and sure looks like he’s not in their plans plus Ceci has arrived.

    • Tooks

Scared when 2-65-77-46-4 are out there, lol.

      • CUP 2014-15

maybe it’s because I am an old man but I like to see D that are big, strong and clear the net while controlling the Dzone boards.

  • Jacques

Spezz we want at least a point get the F off the ice please!

  • Aaron 2.0

    Spezza giving me an aneurysm.

  • Tooks

Wow Cowen almost gave the game away with that hit.

  • Jacques

Michalek saved it but wonder how close that was to going in! Haha

  • Mark

    Karlsson is buzzing tonight.

    • Tooks

Yeah but showing dissapointment (body language) when his teammates dont pass it to him, wow, I mean, when has he started that? bit of an ego problem?

      • Deadly

        Wow, always negative.

        • Tooks

I know thats what I’m saying, why is Karlsson so negative towards his teammates. He hasnt done this all season?

        • Sandy

          Yes Tooks is negative.
I don’t know how you can tell through a TV screen that a guy is mad at another one by a body language..

          • Tooks

Not mad, dissapointed and showing it by yelling at them or shaking his head.

          • Tooks

            Sandy as per SC:

“Ha. Karlsson is furious with Greening”

          • Jacques

The Leafs lost so he’s pissed!

      • Aaron 2.0

I often look for body-language, especially from goal-tenders when pucks go off defenders. But, I think Karlsson just really wants to win.

  • Jacques

Get the TUrris line out there enough with Zack already!

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Well I guess we are playing for overtime instead of a win considering who they are putting out there.

  • Sandy

Good job Sens.. They got a point against one of the toughest teams in the West…

    • CUP 2014-15

that’s 4 back lets get it to 3. Great game from the Lads

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

    Hard fought point.

  • Aaron 2.0

Win or lose, the team played a really, really good game tonight. I haven’t seen puck support like this since the first game against Detroit

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

I love Lehner’s attitude. Guy is so much better than Anderson in every facet. Look at him dapping up the players on the bench.

    Hates to lose.

    • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Lehner has a winning attitude. We need players like him.

    • Tooks

I agree its definitely his time, BUT we need to up Andy’s value by playing him, cuz right now I doubt we get a 3rd for him.

      • Righteous Smoke

OMG You are just here to argue.WTF! Everytime Andy starts, you complain and say it should be Lehner! Now you say the opposite!! GO AWAY!

      • jasonontheoldsenschirp

You don’t play a goalie to help your trade chances. You play a goalie to win games.

Right now we have a better shot of winning games with Lehn. I don’t care about Andy and that trading nonsense.

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

SOOOOOOO El Predicto time…..Anderson next game??

    • jasonontheoldsenschirp

      LOL probably. Knowing Mac.

      Makes no sense.

    • T K

Andy will get the Florida game

    • Jacques

      No!

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

    GREAT HUSTLE SPEZZA!

  • Sandy

PP — Guys your time is NOW..

  • Jacques

    TUrris and Ceci please!

  • Tooks

holy fuck 4 one timers blocked, LOL!!

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

    Lets see Ceci – Karlsson

Ryan – Turris on this PP!

  • SensFanInMTL

I am thoroughly enjoying the 4 man tandem of Spezza, Karlsson, MacArthur & Zibanejad.

    • Tooks

Ya if not for Blues insane shot blocking….that was a good PP.

      • SensFanInMTL

P-Mac pas de confiance de mettre Ceci & Turris? He could get his 1st NHL point.

        • SensFanInMTL

          I stand corrected.

  • Sandy

When did Elliott learn to stop the puck?

    • Deadly

Same time as anderson, but he has the mojo still.

  • Mark

    Crappy PP

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Like to complain? We controlled the puck the whole time

      • Tooks

We had a half dozen shots haha.

  • Sandy

So .if it goes to shootout.. which goaltender has the upper hand?

    • Aaron 2.0

I was just thinking that myself. Lol.

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

No excuse not scoring on that PP. That’s unacceptable.

    • Aaron 2.0

Maybe not scoring. But, they didn’t really get much in the way of chances. Skaters need to move their feet.

  • Jacques

Cecil should be on the point on the PP, he’s a pp specialist with a hundred mile an hour shot

    • T K

      Someone called that!

  • Sandy

    CECI!!!!!!!

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

    FUCKING RIGHT

  • Tooks

    CECI!!

    • Michenator

      MAKE HIM CAPTAIN!!!

      • Tooks

Hahah no but give him Cowen’ spot in the top 4. That would be a good start.

  • Deadly

    Perfect

  • T K

What a goal. Great first one

  • SensFanInMTL

    Best finish. Ever.

  • Jacques

    That’s our guy!

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

    SEE-SEE

  • Sandy

And what’s most important it was a ‘ROW” win..

  • Jacques

Jeez even his wrister is a LAZeR,

  • luckan20

Pageau, Ryan and Ceci = Sweet

  • SensChirp

NOW say something good about the Ottawa Senators!

    • sprucesens

if they play like that the rest of the year, we will make the playoffs

    • Tooks

      Ceci is amazing!

    • luckan20

Pageau and Ceci. Two call ups perform

    • CUP 2014-15

Over the top happy with the win BUT… Even more happy with the way they played, that’s the team that makes me happy I dropped my cash to go to the game. Win or lose, just play like that and I’ll be happy.

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

I don’t know about anyone else, but in three games Cody Ceci looks NHL ready to me. I mean how do you send him back down!

    • Tooks

Yep, they wont have a choice, Ceci up, Cowen/Gryba down.

      • jasonontheoldsenschirp

        Yep.

      • Sandy

What exactly was wrong with most of Cowen’s game tonight?

        • Tooks

Ill timed hits, slow, out of position.

          • Aaron 2.0

I think he’s slowly improving though.

          • Tooks

Could be, if we sacrifice Gryba then Cowen goes 3rd pairing. Big slow D shouldnt be in the top 4.

          • MikeS

            I like Karlsson/Methot, Ceci/Phillip, Cowen/(weircoch/corvo), Good defensive d, and offensive d on each pair

          • MikeS

Do we all agree that Ceci is up to stay now though?

          • CUP 2014-15

if not it’s only until a D is traded.

          • Tooks

He cant stay unless we get rid of someone.

          • CUP 2014-15

He can still 23 man roster but back to 8 D

          • MikeS

Mac has basically said hes game to game, he will be here as long as he is making a big impact. “we are going to ride the wave and see where it goes”

          • H POTTER

            G R Y B A

          • CUP 2014-15

Looks good but PW and Cowen have been awful as a team as neither can play off side. Still not enough toughness back there. I would put Boro with Cowen. Their both lefties but boro can play the off wing.

          • MikeS

Cowens been looking stronger as of late, Also notice I put them as our 5/6/7 d

          • CUP 2014-15

yes and I like it but I am thinking two offensive minded D is enough. PK is so important. and we don’t need three of these guys.IMO

          • H POTTER

            I like this!!

      • CUP 2014-15

Not sure but Cowen may have hit his 130 game mark and Gryba needs wavers so he will not make it to Bingo.

        • Tooks

Yes we screwed up with Cowen, he should have been down in Bingo when he was exempt, Gryba, who really cares if we lose him, especially if it means keeping Ceci up. Let him go play elsewhere.

          • CUP 2014-15

Agreed just don’t let him rot in the stands

  • aegiszx

    Erik Karlsson.
    Bobby Ryan.
    Robin Lehner.
    Cody Ceci.

    Fuck, the future looks bright!!!

    • Sandy

One additional point to that.. get Ryan signed on the dotted line..

      • aegiszx

Hey, maybe if we move out Spezza, Ryan might jump on the opportunity to flank a top line of Turris and himself, as he’s shown that the Captain confuses the fuck out of every player, gm, and coach lol

    • luckan20

Please include Pageau, Turris and Zibanejaad too.

    • sprucesens

      Kyle Turris, Mika zibanejad

      • Eugenius

Excited about Lazar too. I think he’ll be a very good player.

  • SensFanInMTL

No disrespect to poor Anderson but, if Lehner takes over as starter for the rest of the year while Andy plays the shittier teams, it may be the difference in salvaging this season and making it to the post season while there’s still time. Of course with the continuous play from our fowards & d-men.

  • Millennium

AMAZING game. Ceci, what a monster.

  • MikeS

Ok I think I’m going to stop watching games, they only win when I am at badminton….Every game in December I have watched they lost

  • Jacques

Here’s a positive SENS hockey will be exciting in the future with 65 and 5 skating the puck up the ice. Oops I meant the PRESENT!

  • Shibal

Zibanejad with Ryan and Turris looked great. Paguea also had an excellent game, I REALLY hopy Maclean keeps these lines for a while.

  • aegiszx

We needed this win… because the Panthers are only 3 points behind us… well, 5 points now. And we’re now 3 points closer to the Leafs… Imagine the Leafs continue to bomb, and get passed by the Panthers…

    • aegiszx

Which means tomorrow is a BIG game for those two clubs. I will be watching and hoping the Panthers beat the Leafs and close the gap.

  • luckan20

Good freaking come back win against a team considered the best in the West.

Now we have to put some wins together. Devils our next opponent, followed by a home against the Panthers.

    • Tooks

Blues are 4th in the West. IMO ANA, SJ, CHI, STL

      • Aaron 2.0

Blues have actually played far fewer games than those other teams. They are at least in contention for best in the west. But, yeah, happy the sens aren’t out west. The east is so much more moderate.

      • Mexican Baby Jesus

        I think ANA is overrated

  • son of a Diefenbaker

    RAGNAR LOTHBROK FOR THE WIN

    • Aaron 2.0

Which son are you? Apparently there are two Diefenbaker’s out there. Lol.

      • SenaTHOR

        John Deifen boink her.

  • Millennium

Games against Panthers and Devils next are huge. 3 points behind the Leafs, with a half dozen teams on our tail, Devils and Panthers included.

  • Hax

    ;)

  • Sandy

Just checked the Leafs schedule.. pretty easy the rest of Dec. The only tougher ones are Detroit & Phoenix..

    • Aaron 2.0

I think if we catch anybody it’s the Leafs or Detroit. The wings are still a little ways up in the standings, but I just don’t believe they are actually that good of a team anymore. I don’t think we can catch BOS, MTL or TB.

      • MikeS

TB without stamkos is not going to stay on course. Imo its TB or Toronto who we can catch

        • Tooks

Stammer is already firing pucks! He will be back by the time you know it…

        • Millennium

Tampa are 5-3-2 in last 10. They miss Stamkos, but aren’t crumbling like ppl expected. They are still a strong team; stronger than Detroit or Toronto.

      • Luc Wolfe

i think Detroit are much better then Montreal. they are just too small. i think the east teams are not far apart although Ottawa aren’t allowed for 4-5 games meltdowns again.

        • Aaron 2.0

I think MTL is built just fine to succeed in the regular season. Playoffs is another story.

          • Luc Wolfe

3 goals in the last 4 games hurts and kinda hope it continues

          • Aaron 2.0

Hope you’re right. The more teams we have to chase the better. MTL just seems to play this very fast yet different style of hockey that gives a lot of teams fits. I agree with you, on paper, they don’t seem very good.

          • Luc Wolfe

Briere and Coach are not on the same page either!

        • aegiszx

As my boss just came back from MTL for the first time he goes “Man have you been to Montreal? The people there are tiny! Ive never seen so many small people in one city before.”

They wont make it deep in the playoffs…

  • Tooks

16,000 people tonight, whats going on, its one of the best teams in the League and we cant even sell out.

    • Luc Wolfe

      were you there?

      • Tooks

        Yep.

    • xN1Cx

      Monday… just a guess

    • son of a Diefenbaker

      Kettle calling pot black ?

    • SensChirp

You found it. You found the one negative.

    • sens88

Can you just not be miserable for one night? Seriously, you can be miserable tomorrow, but for now just let us all enjoy this.

      • Tooks

How is posting attendance being miserable? Did you actually think we sold out and are just now finding out we didnt?

Its terrible that we cant sell out as a Canadian team. It has nothing to do with the win. You can still enjoy the win.

        • sens88

Everyone is aware that the game was not a sellout. The point is that you constantly need to harp on the fact that the game was poorly attended. We know.

          • Tooks

Its the 2nd time I post attendance. Not sure you know the meaning of “constantly”.
Against BUF I predicted it be real low and it was, but against the Blues? Only 1000 more people showed up…

          • sens88

Out of conference so often those games don’t bring in as many people I guess?

    • T K

I once read this quote: “If you aren’t willing to adopt, you have absolutely no right to criticize someone else’s stance on abortion”. I think that the same goes for ticket sales. If you didn’t buy a ticket, who are you to pontificate about attendance?

      • Tooks

I have Corp. tickets, give alot of them away to emp’s.

        • T K

You mean, your dad has tickets…

    • Sicilian

It’s a fragile fan base. After they put a stinker like the game against LA. No one’s sure if they can handle the pain of watching them do that again

  • Luc Wolfe

I found that Spezza played a more composed game, and Michalek charged hard.

  • Tooks

Lehner .938sv%, PLEASE PMAC, leave him in!!

    • H POTTER

      Pleaaaaaaaaaaaaasse

  • H POTTER

Man, what a game tonight!! OMG could this have been the best effort all around ? Pretty much all the forwards playing 2-way, helping the D out when they pinched, playing physical all the way, forechecking like crazy, putting pressure, clearing our all rebounds, having the goalie’s back when there was traffic in front of the net after the play stopped. Lehner making good saves, powerplay moving real nice…man I just wish I was at the game…I just hope, pray, that this is how OUR Sens will play from now on!

  • sens88

Such a great game. So great to see Ceci get the game winner and Karl was flying. With Methot coming likely coming back for NJ, I think Corvo might be the odd man out. Love to see this team play up to their potential.

    • Tooks

You might be right, I would sit out Cowen/PW46 instead of Corvo.

      PW46 Karlsson
      Methot Corvo
      Phillips Ceci

      or

      Methot Karlsson
      Phillips Ceci
      Cowen Corvo

      • sens88

I figure Corvo would be out simply because they have more invested in Cowen/PW and might want to let them build on the win and hopefully get the team on a roll. I am done trying to figure MacLean out though, so who knows.

    • SenaTHOR

Pw46 played like crap. CORVO didn’t play much better.

      • sprucesens

corvo was ok, not great. PW definitely looked lost out their tonight. But it didn’t really cost us tonight, so thats a positive

  • H POTTER

Just loved the lines tonight: 16-19-09, 93-07-06

    • sprucesens

yeah, zib, turis and ryan was a damn good combo.

Just to be negative, phillips was terrible tonight. Made a lot of stick handling moves he couldn’t complete, and 3-6 bad passes that put Ceci in a terrible spot, luckily he made a smart play to recover from each pass. Michalek was so so, conacher was mostly invisible. And condra was condra. Wiercioch looked a little lost at times, but also made a few decent plays.

But i can write a lot more about the good for once. Karlsson played well. Lehner looked composed and made a few solid saves. Macarthur probably played his worst game as a sen, and it was still an amazing effort! yes thats still a positive because he has been that good. Ceci has looked amazing, and i was calling it on the play before, how awesome it would be for Ceci to get his first at home against arguably the best team in the league FTW. And then it happened on the next shift!

Greening look’s like he’s finally embraced the grinding role and is hitting every shift. Pageau played solid and still has room to grow. We took very little penalties! Neil had an excellent timed fight to get everyone in it, where we scored right after. The lines that didn’t fully contribute to offense, actually played relative decent defense. The team played as a team, and the goaltending didn’t take the wind out of our sails.

If they can play the game like that more often, we will be climbing in the standings. And at least if they lose, with that kind of effort, at least its good hockey. Nice to say that i said that only a few games ago. That must mean we are actually putting together better efforts!

      • Deadly

Phillips did handcuff Ceci a few times for sure

  • sprucesens

Sadly Ceci likely won’t be up for too much longer, barring a trade. He certainly doesn’t look out of place, but we won’t carry 8 D. He’ll likely get sent back once methot is good to go. It will certainly keep him hungry. They sent boro down when he was probably playing as our 2nd best D.

There has to be a trade to make room. PW or Gryba and maybe condra in a 2 for 1. Not gonna be a big upgrade, but makes some room, and saves $. Holiday freeze is in 3 days. Interesting to watch and see what happens

  • lbernier

Chris Phillips has not been the same since loosing Volchenkov as a partner, but I have to say with him play with Ceci, I see the old Chris Phillips back, they obviously gained some quick chemistry and both compliment each other very well. No way Ottawa can send Ceci down, as he is helping the team out on the back end so much right now! They will trade Weirchoich before they send him down I think!

If Methot comes back for Wednesday, PW46 should come out for Ceci. He wasn’t good tonight. And for some reason he doesn’t pass to his now new immediate competition in Ceci when on the PP with him, I wonder why :<

Watched the game last night, had a great sleep but dreamed that we beat the Blues with some young kid scoring the winning goal. Had to check in to see which one was real.
    Wow, both.
