Game Day- Anderson Starts vs. Islanders

Around the NHL, teams are gearing up for the playoffs while here in the Nation’s Capital, a painful season is coming to an end.

Just four games left in the regular season for the Ottawa Senators. They take on the Islanders tonight before returning home for fan appreciation night against the Devils on Thursday. Then on Saturday they’ll take a run at the Ontario Cup against the rival Maple Leafs before closing out their season on Sunday against the Penguins.  And unless Columbus and Detroit lose all of their remaining games, that’s all that is left in the Sens season.

And then the long summer of soul-searching can begin. Some tough decisions will be made this off season but in the meantime, let’s try to enjoy these last four games and finish the season on a high note.

Just an optional morning skate for the Senators today so we’ll have to wait till game time to find out if there are any changes to the lineup. Colin Greening definitely won’t play and it sounds like Jared Cowen has been shut down for the season. MacLean suggested there’s a chance he makes a switch but he has not yet decided. For now, we’ll assume they go with the same line up as Saturday against the Rangers.

Michalek-Spezza-Hemsky
MacArthur-Turris-Stone
Smith-Zibanejad-Neil
Hoffman-Pageau-Condra

Methot-Karlsson
Phillips-Gryba
Wiercioch-Ceci

Craig Anderson gets the start in the Ottawa goal. Puck drop is scheduled for just after 7:00 PM.

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Omg Cowen with another Injury… This guy bugs me SK Damn much. Did absolutely nothing to warrant holding out and has done nothing to justify having held out

    • spezzerman

define “hold out?” I thought he just didn’t sign an 8 year contract, the only one offered him until he was offered a more reasonable 4 year contract?

    • Mat

      Patience young Jedi…
Why are we soooo rushed with Cowen? Big defensive defensemen take time to develop and get their lanky segments coordinated. Look at Chara’s first 5 years in the NHL – NYI (4)/Ott (1) combined. Disastrous stats. -27 twice in a row in years 3 and 4. Obviously that was on a crap Islanders team but would you say the Sens are any better this year?
The problem is not Cowen, its that we have 4 young D that are developing (i.e. prone to major mistakes), 1 that’s too old to follow the play (i.e. prone to major mistakes) and only 2 that can play (but one is prone to major mistakes).

      • spezzerman

Karlsson is very prone to major mistakes too; but he is so good with puck on his stick that you overlook them. Kind of like Spez…nevermind.

        • runningbear1974

Not me… I’m noticing… I spent the first half the year defending him… Thinking he’s just pushing himself to see where he’s at… But, as the year has gone on, I’m becoming more and more worried… Why does someone make bad decisions? Is this something he’s going to improve on? I talk with my friends that he’s ruined now… Good skater, good with puck on the stick, but bad decisions, does the same thing over and over again, not seeming to learn… As a defenseman, you should never skate past the point that you are willing to come back if something bad happens… I don’t know… I no longer believe in Karlsson, I hope next year he plays differently… Last year I thought Karlsson could fight for Norris trophy every year… This year, I don’t know, there are a lot more solid defensemen…

          • spezzerman

why does it need to be one extreme or the other? Its hardly surprising his true strengths return first and the parts of his game he has to put more effort into come back later.

          • runningbear1974

Brian Campbell, Mike Green, Letang…. All defensemen that were rated high… Then they stopped doing defense, and now, how do you feel about those guys?
It is possible he will recover and start making better defensive decisions… Who knows… After this year’s play, its not a sure thing anymore… He’s the guy I’m the most worried about, because he has the most potential…

  • Corey Trevor

Finally, Zibby gets some quality wingers! (facepalm)

I read somewhere that Pageau also plays RW… so why not try a 3rd line of Hoff-Zib-Pageau?

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

      Hahaha… My thoughts exactly

      • SensChirp

Him and Smith have actually looked pretty good together the last couple games. Although at this point, Zibanejad looks good with everyone.

        • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

He looks to be one of those guys that makes everyone around him better.

I think he is a real gem

          • Corey Trevor

            Like Spezza circa 2005?

        • Doc

I think it’s more that he looks good with anyone, like you mentioned.

Can’t wait to see the type of player Zibby becomes. So much potential.

          • Zelle

I think Smith is a good player though. I feel he’s underrated. The only thing that pisses me off about him is his useless retaliation penalties when he gets upset. I’d give Condra to Zbad on the RW though.

    • jtf927

I agree with this. let’s give the young kids a chance. our top line should be mcarthur-turris-ryan. zbad should #2 with stone and hoffman, lazar #3 with greening and condra, and then smith #4 with neil and kassian. solidify the d-corp with the money saved from letting hemsky and 9mm walk. trade spezza for quality d-men. flip Anderson for a stable tender to mentor lehner, or keep him around for another year. our focus should be defense and tending this offseason. bring up pageau full time. not sure where he will fit in though.

  • SensChirp

Scouts always warn against doing this kind of thing but it can make for good discussion. Let’s look at certain young players on the Senators and project a comparable player in the best case and the worst case.

    Start with Mika Zibanejad…

    • The Apostle

Best case: Rootin tootin shooting hitting Mike Fisher
Worst case: couldn’t hit a cow’s arse with a banjo Mike Fisher

    • whammer44

      Peter Stastny
      Patrick Stefan

    • Miguel

      Zibby – best case Forsberg
      Worst case – MM9 ( player today )
      most likely – MIke Fisher

      • sprucesens

i agree with the most likely, and was just thinking the same thing before I read your prediction. I doubt he goes as high as Forsberg, that’s wishful thinking. My guess is a 25-30 goal scorer is tops. Maybe michalek at the top of his game type of thing, with better hands, but a bit less speed. I hope to see zibby manning the point with that big shot. Him and karlsson on the back would be much better than karlsson and Phillips. I like Hoffman there as well though.

    • CUP 2014-15

Best case: M. Hossa as a centre
      Worst case: A. Vermette
not that I don’t like Vermett , I think he’s a good player and see this as the low level for this talent.

    • MethotToMyMadness

The Hockey Writers Scouting reports, listed Ryan Kesler as his NHL comparable. And when I look at how Mika plays, I can see the resemblance to a degree. Kesler has become a big name with strong pedigree, that plays an aggressive style of game. I think Zibanejad has some work to do, but may very well get close.

      • Zelle

I would love it if Mika would rise to the level of Kesler or above. Kesler pretty much took the entire team on his back for two playoff series before he got hurt in the SCF.

    • Cicero

Alexander Mogilny — wicked shifty, quick release, keen vision and evasive when checked

      worst case? Daigle maybe I don’t know…

  • SensChirp

    Same thing as described below…

    Patrick Wiercioch

    • whammer44

      Lets do this one local…
      Steve Duchesne
      Christoph Schubert

    • Miguel

      best – Paul Martin
      worst – Kuba

      • whammer44

ha…Kuba over 10 years in NHL, including an all star appearance and even has a stint wearing the C with the Wild. If thats the worst case scenario, I’ll take it

      • bluebuyyoo

Is that the same Kuba that partnered with EK when he won the Norris? Kuba had a very solid year allowing EK to play his own game.

    • CUP 2014-15

      Best—S. Duchene
      worst- C. Campoli

    • spezzerman

I assume this is using only NHL caliber guys who at least stuck around awhile right? Cause worst case would be some guy no one is ever heard of.
      Best: Gonchar
      Worst: Marc Andre Bergevin

  • 383

Crazy to think that it’s entirely possible that our whole top line (spezza, hemsky, MM9) will be gone come next September.
Not a “bad” thing, but just food for thought.
Here’s to 4 in a row and the jackets or wings collapsing!!!! Go Sens Goooooo!!!!!!

    • Doc

Maybe Chirp can add to this, but Garrioch seems to think that Murray wants to retain Michalek as well as Hemsky.

  • MethotToMyMadness

Well here we are Sens Fans. 4 games left, most of us are scratching our heads wondering what will happen. I can’t see the Sens org giving up on PMac. It’s too early, and things were too close to just let him walk. Plus, we are paying him 3 more years, budget teams can’t pay people who aren’t around, it’s against the budget code. ;)

As for players, I can’t see the Sens blowing it up. We may see something moved and something brought in, but nothing too crazy. I just don’t see it.

If the Sens are going to do anything big in the final 4 games, make it a major win over Toronto at home, Saturday night. And as insurance to make it harder on Toronto, we should let NJ beat us, only so they can keep putting up the points against the Leafs just incase some strange thing happens with Columbus down the stretch. Normally I’d never say that, but at this point, anything to see the Leafs suffer!!

  • The Apostle

OT: I generally pick my draft day wishes around names that I find amusing or interesting. last year I was happy with Curtis Lazar although would have wanted Anthony Mantha. I’m still upset we didn’t draft Slater Koekkoek.

This year I want us to do all we can to trade into the first round and pick up Julius Honka.

    • Conor_smythe

Nikolaj Ehlers is the cream of crop this season IMO

      Virtkanen too

Would have loved Mantha last season but Lazar is certainly no slouch

      • The Apostle

        Names aren’t funny enough.

        • Doc

How about Jayce Hawryluk or Luc Snuggerud?

Say those names 3 times with saltines in your mouth.

          • sprucesens

ooo, snuggerud should be tops so far. that’s fun to say.

          • Doc

            It’s a keeper for sure.

            so many possibilities.

    • sprucesens

      Ho Sang!

    • MethotToMyMadness

Lazar is a great name. I can see in a few years, TSN will have a headline saying, Sens win in OT thanks to Lazar’s laser! Or something along those lines.

      • bishbosh

        Lazar Guided Missile!!!!

        • A-Train

          Hopefully no Lazar Eye Surgery

          • bishbosh

            tips hat

        • SENSsmile

Lazurus… rising (his team) from the dead.

  • Sandy

The end is coming to a disappointing season.

What we should take from this season.. is not to expect anything from next year. This team will still be young… maybe even younger… and with that comes inexperience and mistakes..
I would like them to win out… make them feel better about themselves going into the offseason.
Zibby will have to work hard in the offseason to be ready for Sept. I don’t think he really did that last year and just expected to be in the NHL… Hopefully he learned his lesson.
Cowen spent most of last offseason rehabbing his hip.. Let’s hope the injury he has is not related to the hip.. and he can have a good offseason of hard training…
I also thought about the team trading Andy.. Vancouver would probably be the place he would land.. as they are in desperate need of goaltending.. That comes with questions. Is Lehner ready to handle the #1 role? Would you bring in a veteran backup or go with a young guy..

    • sprucesens

the only thing i’ll say about this is, for the most part, its the younger guys that have been great, save macA and ryan. then spezza and hemsky for the last bit, with michalek stepping up. It was mostly the vet’s that had poor years. Ceci, gryba, wiercioch, karlsson, turris, zibby, dacosta, stone, Hoffman, I think all looked pretty good this year. Cowen is basically the only young guy that took vast steps back, hopefully due to injury. Lehner also had a very tough time for stretches this year. For a large part of the year, I would say Phillips, Anderson, spezza, neil, greening, condra, michalek have been the much worse players. Anderson was streaky, but mostly bad this year. Michalek and spezza both picked it up big time after the Olympics, but a season is 82 games. Can’t have that happen, we need a full year, every year, from all our players. So while there will certainly be growing pains from the young guys, I think, at least this year anyways, they certainly were not the problem on either end of the rink.

  • Deadly

Someone in a white SUV ( Buick) with personalized plates ( chirp) seemed to be in a big hurry today in the west end today.
    Was that you Chirp?

  • MethotToMyMadness

Chirp, to chime in on your tweet about Anderson. I don’t think we have a Goalie in our system who’s ready to be a starter, taking upwards of 65+ games, not even Lehner. While he’s showed some promise at the end of this season, Lehner needs to split games next season with a veteran.

Andy, is the perfect guy to fill that other half. He’s already well known and liked in the org and if he doesn’t mind being in a system with a 1a/1b rotation, why not? I say they should try to sign him to a 2 year deal, and use his sub-par stats this year to get decent value.

The benefit here, if Andy and Lehner come out rock solid next year, you then know Lehner is ready to take over 1st job duties, with a quality backup. And with Andy, we have a goalie of value to trade at the deadline, who has a decent cap hit for 1 more year.

    • A-Train

With all the work Murray has to do with signings and trades in the next little while I be he stands pat with Lehner and Anderson until at least next year’s deadline. At that time, depending on where he are in the standings, an Anderson deal would be possible.

    • Zelle

Although I would have agreed before, after seeing his interviews where he was healthy and not starting, I don’t believe Anderson would be happy with 1a/1b duties.

  • CUP 2014-15

Hope the lads finish with a win streak, starting tonight v NYI. Nice to see most of the young guys take the optional skate this morning. Both Net minders. Kass and Greening along with some guys trying to close out strong, ZBad, Hoff Stone, JGP, CC and EG all taking on the extra ice time. Can’t help but to notice the only kid missing is PW, has to make me wonder if he is hurting as looking at the guys out there he is the only one that I would expect to see, wonder if the coaching staff looks at any of this stuff as it is an optional. Hope he’s ailing and not just taking the day, no way he’s tired. This is still a big week for the young guns.

    • Sandy

PW is playing in his 100th game tonight..

      • CUP 2014-15

I get that but teams generally practice game day, a so called “boo boo” might keep him out of the optional or he just choose to skip it.

      • Lorenzo72

Congrats to him. One of my favorite player.

    • Zelle

I hope they were having fun. With all the rumors about the ‘toxic’ atmosphere in the management areas, as fans we have to hope that the guys will want to stay and play for each other, if nothing else.

  • MethotToMyMadness

Well, Mike Gillis is officially out!

    • Jonny

Long time coming, he’s the one who started the whole mess.

    • Zelle

      Good.

  • SensChirp

    From Garrioch

“Changes are ahead. I can guarantee that. This team won’t look the same next season.”

    http://blogs.canoe.ca/offtheposts/hockey/on-the-brink/

    • Doc

I swear, if they fire MacLean I will seriously have reservations supporting decisions from management from here on out.

Prepare for 3 and a half months of this type of stuff, Sens fans. Ugh.

      • Jonny

I wouldnt be at all surprised, if management and players have a toxic relationship with PMAC, is a disaster waiting to happen.

But some players need to go aswell, Condra, Greening, Michalek, Cowen, Gryba could all be gone and we wouldnt miss a beat, I mean, we would probably play a little better, lol.

        • Doc

MacLean is probably the best coach we had (have?) and I’m really not ready to put all the blame on him, even if some of it falls on him.

If he goes, what are we looking at? 6 coaches in 8 years?? Idiotic.

          • Sandy

Exactly… when does most of this blame start falling to the players?

          • Doc

This summer is my guess! ;)

          • The Apostle

            Paddock lost the dressing room.
            Hartsburg lost the dressing room.
            Clouston lost the dressing room.
At some point you need to change the dressing room.

I think MacLean deserves the opportunity to prove whether this is the real Paul MacLean team or the one from the last 2 years is. Also I can’t see Melnyk being willing to pay yet another coach to not coach this team. I think the changes are to the playing staff.

          • sprucesens

my biggest point in our coaching situations, sure we had 6ish coaches in however many years. BUT NOT ONE WAS A PROVEN NHL COACH. I think hartsburgh is the only guy that has gone on to coach an NHL team since? Murray was the last guy to coach our team, that had any prior experience. I said it before, but nobody commented much. But maybe its time we get a coach that has a proven track record? I’m not saying fire maclean, or promote Richardson or whatever. But the next time we switch coaches, maybe we should get someone who has been doing it for years, not a first timer?
just an idea. Probably not gonna happen with budget talk I guess.

          • Sandy

If they fire McLean.. it won’t be long before some team picks him up.. Vancouver, Toronto?

          • runningbear1974

I agree… Some players are un-coachable… Which players are un-coachable? They’re the ones with all the skill, and the big paycheck…
Build team around Maclean, or find a coach that can deal with Karlsson, and Spezza (good luck with that)…

        • Sandy

We don’t know if there is a ‘toxic’ relationship between players and the coach.
The last couple of seasons, these players had a lot of respect for Paul McLean.
But because they missed the playoffs.. it’s now possibly — toxic?
I will not support the firing of another coach.. just for having 1 bad season in a re-build after his first 2 seasons of making the playoffs — which was completely unexpected during a team re-build.
This was probably McLean’s toughest season in way of how it played out. He is new to being a head coach as well.. but a lot of fans won’t give him any leeway at all..
Murray (& Melnyk) had to go with youth on the blueline due to the budget concerns.. and that hurt this team, big time..
If McLean is fired… Murray had better walk out as well.. Start with a complete clean slate.. including Cameron..
If they are firing the coaching staff.. ALL of them have to go…

          • spezzerman

Fans cant handle a losing season. Its simple as that. The over-reaction to this season is laughable. Shows how spoiled we have been to success. Adversity is a good thing, folks.

          • Sandy

Well, the Sens have missed the playoffs (including this one) 3 times since 1996-97.. That’s an incredible streak.. and spoiled the fans for sure.
Adversity happens in a league that now has so much parody.
The Sens defense is not even close to being good enough for a long playoff run.. That and the team budget could produce the same results next season..

          • runningbear1974

In that time we never had a legitimate cup contender… We were always a mediocre team with lots of skill… St-Louis had 50 years in a row of playoff appearance, and loss… We have not been spoiled, we have been mediocre… Lots of way more exciting teams going on…

          • Zelle

Well I was expecting the cup so…

      • sell the team Eugene

If Murray fires yet another coach that he hired then he needs to appoint himself as Head Coach

      • runningbear1974

It’s only ok if we sign Richardson, or Murray decides to coach the team… Otherwise, bad vibes…

    • spezzerman

Technically, this has to be true to some degree. Every team changes slightly year to year.

      • boom

Well, Garrioch isn’t exactly going out on a limb here – of couse the team won’t look the same next season.
Most of the team will be either an RFA or a UFA this summer or next, so – as many of us have pointed out, alot of hard decisions will need to be made as soon as possible, to avoid an overload of these decisions next summer.

    • Sandy

Lehner, Karlsson, Ceci, Turris, McArthur, Ryan, Zibby, Hoffman, Stone, Smith, Neil.. and I guess Phillips.. are totally here next season.
      Anything else can happen..

    • my2sens

      Another logo!?

      • Doc

        New chip stands.

        • my2sens

Oooh!!! I like the change! Perhaps a paved parking lot!?

          • Doc

            Easy now, big spender.

            Budget.

          • my2sens

Michalek for a new parking lot then!?

          • Doc

            I’m listening…

          • The Apostle

            MIchalek under the parking lot?

          • Jakester

Has a Jimmy Hoffa ring to it!

          • Sandy

They can spend a lot of money putting in those fancy TV’s to improve the fan experience…

I would prefer they take that money and spend it on the players.

      • runningbear1974

        Fearless

    • Jakester

      Awesome, fans should be happy!

  • Lorenzo72

I hope mr. Melnyk is reading this last sentence of the canucks news: “We are committed to bringing the Stanley Cup to Vancouver for our fans and we will continue to do everything possible to reach that goal.”

    • Jonny

      Vancouver = Big City Market
      Ottawa = Small City Market

Vancouver’s owner had very deep pockets.
Melnyk has those fake pockets on suit, stitched up and all.

  • Brutus5247

Does anybody think along the lines that Karlsson might be moved. He is a Norris Trophy winner who is usually questionable defensively. This guy has value galore that could bring a top 3 forward and top 3 D from many teams along with a high pick. Team defence has been a factor and 3 of our top players are also bottom in plus/minus. This area MUST improve!

    • my2sens

      Oh boy….

    • SensChirp

      No.

    • Doc

      Hahahahahahahahhahaha…. *wipes tears*

      Ahhh… Thanks I needed that.

    • my2sens

If anyone were to entertain your idea, yes he has value, could you imagine the effect it would have trading our franchise player after God left Ottawa!?

      • Brutus5247

Franchise player or not he needs to be EFFECTIVE offensively and defensively. Can this team win with your top players not working it defensively. We know they can do it offensively.

        • Colin

          Well, that didn’t take long…
Watch out EK65. Once JS19 is out the door, the “fans” will need another whipping boy.

          • Brutus5247

MAybe it is alright for some if his line is on for 2 goals for and 3 against. Just not my way of thinking. We just don’t have the overall supporting cast that can cover his defensive liabilities.

          • Doc

So instead of getting said supporting cast, you would move Karlsson.

            Makes sense.

          • Brutus5247

Great value for the asset? Nobody can turn his defensive game into something positive.

          • Doc

You can’t replace Karlsson. Period. He’s a generational talent.

You make sure he’s partnered with a legit top 2 defenseman and his ‘shortcomings’ will be easily disregarded. You don’t trade him away because he has ‘value’. You build around him, not the other way around.

          • Brutus5247

If i’m another team playing against us I’m putting my best players to play against Karlsson/Spezza. I’ll save my best checkers for the 2nd best line. Why?
Can you WIN with negative players? You are then expecting your bubble players to win it for you.

          • Doc

            You’re bad at coaching?

          • Brutus5247

Why? Every team knows that they give up more than they get so you put your best players on to maximize the results because you know their defence is suspect and the numbers show that. You ever actually play?
You nullify our top line with your top line(numbers prove this) put your checking line against Turris etc and hope your 2nd and 3rd can outplay our 3/4.

          • Millennium

            Starts with “trade Karlsson”.

Ends with “do you even play?”.

Sounds like a well thought out, organized, and fact-based argument process.

Honestly, trolls like Tookie used to atleast make an effort.

          • Brutus5247

This team, unless spending to the cap, will never win with Karlsson/Spezza. They will have positive games but that will be sporadic at best. Your top players cannot be your worst defenders! This is a major source of the problem this year. You would be very shortsighted to say that a player who has 70pts and is minus 20 is having a stellar year.

          • sprucesens

why not get top defensive players to play with them, so they can do what they are best at? You can’t win with a bunch of smith’s and methot’s on the team either you know.

          • Jakester

He played most of the year with Cowen the Pylon and has a leg that is still recovering! Plus, he’s got guys on the ice that don’t know how to cover for him when he rushes up the ice! And we have forwards who don’t back check! So give King Karl a break!

          • Millennium

If you think points and +/- tell anything close to the whole story, you really need to learn the sport.

Karlsson is the single best breakout player in the league. Bar none. No one starts a rush like him, even with his massive injury. That is a crucial requirement on any NHL back end.

Every player will always have stuff to work on, but Karlsson is the closest to untouchable this team has ever had. There is no trade in the league that would be worth trading a generational talent.

          • Doc

Annnnnnnnd this is where I lose interest in this discussion.

          • Sandy

How about having 49 goals and be a -35… That’s Ovey.

            Edler is -34
Keith Yandle is -25.. same as Spezza.
            Byfuglien is -20

        • Zelle

Although this year didn’t show it, he does have defensive skills. I would be extremely upset if they moved Karlsson.

        • Jakester

He’s still on one leg. Long summer off and next year he’ll be back to the full package!

    • whammer44

They should move him for a puck moving dman. Someone who can play close to 30 mins a night, quarterback a powerplay and make those around him better. He should be young too…maybe a point a game player and have the desire to play through injuries…you know a character guy and the kind of guy who is worth the price of a ticket. Someone who will likely be in the Norris convo every year.

Its wishful thinking but maybe they can trade him for someone like that.

      • Hax

I see what you did there – Wiser’s clap to you, sir.

      • Deadly

        Great comeback to Brutal’s suggestion.

      • Zelle

There can’t be too many of them out there though, maybe a handful in the entire NHL at best.

        • sprucesens

          nay, the world

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Wow I’ve seen some bats hit insane things on here… But Brutus, you sir take the cake.

Not only is he going to be a perennial Norris candidate he is also signed to an extremely reasonable salary.

      • Jakester

U never trade Karlsson! He’s the guy that makes our team interesting!

    • Senator forever

You never ever trade a Norris winner!!!

  • aegiszx

If Murray fires yet another HC, I will have lost a lotttt of respect for the man.

What kind of message does that send to the rest of the league? “You better win in your first season or you’re out”… Yeah, no thanks, who would take a job like that? You’d have to be stupid to relocate your family and start new, knowing what kind of organization youre about to enter.

Some people have mentioned the prospects of coaching an elite talent like Karlsson… well so what? If I were a HC looking for a new job, there are a lot more rebuilding teams that I’d consider before Ottawa… Edmonton (RNH/Hall/Eberle/Schultz), Carolina (Staals/Skinner/Ward), Florida (Huberdeau/Barkov/Luongo)…

    • Zelle

I think Maclean is handling the young guys just fine. Firing him would be two steps way back, imo.

  • Millennium

I’d hope the change is the firing of our assistant coaches, special teams coaches, defence coaches etc.

Our system was garbage this year. Guys aren’t in position, guys aren’t engaging in the defensive zone properly, and guys aren’t playing the same system. Our breakout only works when its carried singlehandedly by Karlsson or a nice pass by Ceci or PW46. All our other Dmen are incapable of initiating a breakout. That is a coaching problem.

Our coaching has to go back to the basics and start from step one on how to position and block shots, how not to take dumb penalties, and how to setup/score on the PP. I think Maclean could do that, but his supporting cast is garbage in my opinion.

    • Doc

So no blame on the players??

      • Millennium

Oh sure, I think there is blame there as well. I was more referencing the comment that change was coming up top. If there’s change coming in management/coaching, I’d want it to be in the areas I listed.

    • Zelle

For the love of all that is hockey, please, please, PLEASE make changes to the special teams coaching. Whenever they are on the PK or PP I just think ‘fak’.

    • BeJamin

Arguably it’s a talent problem. Phllips, Gryba & Cowen are all complete shit with the puck on their stick. This has been known for some time. Neil & Greening also play 15+ minutes per night and can’t handle a breakout pass to save their lives.

      • Millennium

We certainly do need some roster help from Murray. No denying that. But even our good players look bad in the current clusterfuck that is our Defensive zone play.

  • Greening sucks

Wouldnt surprise me to see a team like Vancouver or WPG take Maclean’s salary off Melnyk’s hand and he promotes Richardson.

    • Sandy

But will they still be stuck with Cameron…

    • sell the team Eugene

Menyk’s boyfriend will get the job ahead of LR

  • Billy Bob

Guys, PMac isn’t going anywhere, at some point the players have to take a little responsibility.

    • Millennium

I think its interesting that people seem to think the problem has to be in or the other place, and not both.

Both sides need to improve. PMac regressed this year, just like the entire team did (excluding a few names). Next year he will have a chance to rebound just like the Sens will, I’m guessing.

      • Cicero

Character building year for all — fans no exception :-)

        • Zelle

    • H POTTER

Yeah, responsibility in sitting on the bench while I’m suppose to be on the ice helping out offensively. Or goaling the next game from the bench after I watch my supposedly #1 get crushed on a crucial game AT HOME. Yeah, real responsibility

      • Billy Bob

Anderson could have won the vezina just two seasons ago man, when you’re starting goalie has a horrible game you give him a night off, then you put him back in

  • Miguel

we really need to understand why PM made so many of these controversial decisions.
He seemed to have gone against BM, against many of his own players, and against the fans. He certainly has gone off the rails in terms of how he coached the team last year.
Once our Management understands why he did this, that may have cost us some points that could have put us in the playoffs, then a that poiint they need to make a decision moving forward.
The Sens, the fans, cannot go through another year of this shit again for sure.

    • Brutus5247

It’s entertainment for the fans who like to see them win, vs. an obsession for the FANatics who can handle anything less than winning.

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I am going to be so bipolar if I watch the game tonight.

In the finals of my money pool and the guy I’m against has both Anderson and Lehner. I’ve got Turris and Karlsson… So I am hoping for a 9-8 loss!

  • IBelieve

GO SENS GO! Hoping Phoenix pulls a W out over Columbus!

  • BeJamin

If we’re comparing our centers by including what they do on Special Teams:
    Turris (+33)
    Spezza (-5)
    Zibanejad (-8)

Now, there is the factor that Spezza gets 3m/PPTOI time and Z only gets 2. Adjusting for that you’d have Z at -4 as opposed to -8.

I’m not sure why special teams play is ignored when it comes to plus minus. It doesn’t make sense. It’s not a great predictor of good or bad play (possession is better), but we can at least get an idea of the players raw contribution. And if that’s all it’s about, then include special teams. Especially when you’re handing out minuses for SH goals.

So to me what this says is that Spezza more or less helps the team win. If you can find a player like Hemsky + another left winger of a similar ilk to insulate him then you’ve got a great line that will shred the opposition.

In fact, it would be really interesting to see Spezza’s combined +/- with PP points included for the 16 games Hemsky has been here. If he comes out on the positive, and I’m pretty sure he does. Those naysayers suggesting we’re better without him would just be wrong. Their possession numbers together have been excellent as well.

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

    Paul Maclean strikes again.

    Kassian in for Hoffman………

    • I’m just sayin’

meh – Islanders have lots of goons

    • Deadly

    • Harv

      Will it never end?

  • Nicholas Rawlins

You guys should want spezza around so you guys can shit on him and overlook EK.

  • Millennium

Its amazing how the play just dies on Phillips’ stick. The guy just can’t move the puck to save his life.

  • Harv

Kassian loses fight to a newby? Why are they playing this goon?

    • timwrx

Gallant has been around a bit. He has torn up the AHL the last couple of years fighting. We had him down here for a few preseason games a couple years ago and he KO’d Boulerice

      • Harv

I know but a relative newby to the NHL. Kassian is a dud and waste of space.

        • Millennium

Drafted ahead of Kris Letang. Let that sink in.

          • Sandy

            What? That’s insane…

          • Millennium

            And Quick. And Yandle.

2nd rounder 50th overall or there abouts in 2005.

      • Sandy

Goons are a waste of space in a lineup…

        How has Dzingel looked?

        • timwrx

Not bad at all. Decision making needs to be quicker. Needs to be a bit more physical, but for just starting out pretty good.

  • Millennium

What ever happened to the fighting with a visor penalty? Did that only ever get called on Ottawa?

    • Nicholas Rawlins

      Right?!

  • Sandy

So 10 sec of Kassian over 10 min of Hoffman… Makes sense.
In a way, I hope at some point the NHL goes down to 11 forwards and the roles of enforcers will be gone.. Unless of course, you have a goon on D.
You rarely have that.. unless that tough guy can play hockey, like Carkner…

    • Millennium

Carkner was the kind of goon you could live with on your team. Kinda like Neil. I guy who can actually move around the ice and potentially make the other team pay with a hit or a fight. Kassian is a face-puncher who can’t even stay on his feet in skates. Waste of a roster spot.

      • Sandy

        Agreed…

  • Sandy

First penalty to the Sens.. surprise.. surprise.
That’s something they have to correct next season.. It’s ridiculous…

  • Harv

I wonder if Hoffman is enjoying watching the game. Great message to send a young player.

    • jasonontheoldsenschirp

For playing just fine, to boot! Doesn’t make sense.

      • Deadly

Not really convinced that Hoffman is playing great but he sure can skate. He really needs to score to make the team next year.

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

I still fail to see how scratching Mike Hoffman for Matt Kassian would help us win this game. I don’t get this idiotic coach man. Like, is he really this stupid?!?!?!?1

    • FistsofNeil25

Because at this point in the season this game doesn’t mean shit. May as well get everyone into the line up at some point with 4 games remaining. Kassian is as good as gone after the season anyway.

      • jasonontheoldsenschirp

But Hoffman is a young player who they need to play as much as possible for him to develop properly.

What kind of message is this idiot sending to a talented young player who’s played well by scratching him for a guy who average 4 minutes a game???

        • Sensturion

He’s going back to Bingo in 5 days for the cup run. He’ll get to play.

    • Sandy

His thought is toughness in the lineup of the Isles… I can see why he did it… It’s not the first time an NHL team does that. It happens a lot and depends on your opponent..

I don’t agree with it.. but it is what it is… And I’m not going to call a coach stupid for doing that.. just because I don’t agree..

    • SensChirp

This is kind of a no brainer if you look at the Islander line up. Lot of meatheads. Games like this have the potential to go off the rails a little bit.

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

The guys don’t look like they care. Maybe they’ve given up on the coach.

    • Sandy

Nobody knows that. They’ve been playing like this all season..

    • Sensturion

What about given up on the season? At this point, they’re playing out the year and getting their clubs ready.

  • FistsofNeil25

People complain about Maclean having Kassian in the line-up. Maclean wouldn’t ever have to make that kind of decision if Murray didn’t waste a roster spot on Kass to be begin with.

    • Sensturion

It’s not a wasted roster spot if Kassian isn’t playing. Ottawa also has a better record with Kassian in the line-up. Just saying.

  • Sandy

Bishop just got hurt. He jumped at a puck to stop it and landed ackwardly on his shoulder.
Tampa’s done. Fucking Leafs will win this game..

    • Deadly

With the Leafs defence clicking on all cylinders I think Tampa might be able to pull it off.

      • Sandy

It looked like a serious injury.
Against Mtl they don’t have a chance with Lindback in net.

I remember watching TSN after the first 20 games of the season… Sens, Rangers, and Flyers were all on the outside after a disastrous start… the panel was asked “Which 2 teams make?” and all 4 unanimously said Flyers (“Claude Giroux will carry this team”) and Rangers (“Henrik will get back to form, and all players will buy into Vigneault’s new system”)… I thought they were sprouting BS and not giving the Sens enough credit… but I guess I was the naive homer…

  • Sensturion

Love him or hate him (I personally think he’s great), it’ll be weird not hearing Dean Brown doing the Sens game next season.

    • xiorcal

This guy was such a surprise this year. We knew the stats where good but this guy feel like a natural leader for a team. I like Spezza as a player but i don’t think he was a good choice as a captain (too nonchalant).

    • Sensturion

People want him back. The problem is that people don’t seem to realize he won’t be back if Spezza is traded.

    • Mat

Maybe some people are concerned that the budget will be an issue relative to his demands? I can’t imagine we won’t try hard though

      • Sandy

If Hemsky is back… my guess is so is Spezza..
2 good scoring lines is a threat in any game…
They fix that defense and get a good special teams coach.. this team will be better next season..

        • Mat

Totally. I would love to see Luke and someone else replace Cameron and Reeds. That would be a step in the right direction. If we don’t offer him a job in the big club soon, Luke will be offered a head coaching job somewhere else. Guaranteed.

Defense is definitely the other issue we need to resolve. Wish we had pursued Ehrhoff and maybe Murray still will in the off season. But we need 1 veteran top 4 to replace what was lost when Gonchar left. I suspect that Gryba is offered a 2 way contract, refuses and walks. Boro is a 7th D next year and Wiercioch is part of a package that helps us land a low draft pick this summer.

        • Senator forever

Luc Richardson should be coaching the defence next year!

      Ryan – Spezza – Hemsky
      MacArthur – Turris – Stone
      Hoffman – Zibanejad – [???]
      Condra – Smith – Neil

Trade (give away) Greening, Gryba. Free up some money, get us a legit #2 D man.

      • Harv

I thought of that but think Spezza needs a back checker. Do you want that to be Ryan?

        • sprucesens

ryan has been decent defensively. he isn’t gonna catch a speedster on a breakaway, but he’s tough on the puck, and throws solid hits.

          • Harv

True. But, the lack of speed is a problem and I want him on offence as much as possible.

          • Zelle

He actually is very good on the defensive, minus the whole speed thing.

      • CUP 2014-15

Greening will be tough to move with his new contract but Gryba will be real easy to dump. Start with Boston and T.O. Both would love him in the line-up.

        • Senatollah

With Greening I see two options. 1) Hope he can fullfil the Nick Foligno tweener role (line 2/3) and put up points or 2) Sens have two compliance buyouts (which arn’t needed given the cap room) but become attractive to another team as part of a sign and buyout. So many options available

Lazar scores again in WHA playoffs.

    • Zelle

I’m really excited for Lazar but I hope they don’t rush him to the NHL before he’s ready.

A Dying Leafs Fan’s Last Request
( with apologies to: Steve Goodman)

By the shores of old Lake Ontario
Where the north wind blows so cold
An old Leafs fan lay dying
In his midnight hour that had tolled

Round his bed, his friends had all gathered
They knew his time was short
And on his head they put this dark blue cap
    From his all-time favourite sport

He told them – “it’s late
and it’s getting dark in here
And I know it’s time to go
But before I leave the lineup
Boys, there’s just one thing I’d like to know

“Will they still whine the blues in Toronto
When the playoff season rolls around ?
    When the snow melts away,
    Will the Leafies still play
In their tear covered burial ground ?”

When I was a boy they were my pride and joy
But now they only bring fatigue
To the home of the brave, the land in the North
    And the National Hockey League”

He told his friends “You know the law of averages says:
Anything will happen that can. – That’s what it says.”
But the last time the Leafs won a Stanley Cup banner
Was the year we hosted the Expo 67 World Fair”

“The Leafs made me a criminal
They sent me down a wayward path
They stole my youth from me
    and that’s the truth

I’d get a ticket by selling my new shoes
and sit in the Garden’s End Blues
    In flagrant truancy

and one thing led to another
and soon I’d discovered alcohol – gambling – dope -
    football – baseball – lacrosse – tennis

    But what do you expect,
When you raise up a young boy’s hopes
And then just crush them like so many plastic beer cups?
Year after year after year after year,
after year, after year, after year, after year

Until those hopes are just so much popcorn
for the pigeons beneath the CN Tower to eat”

He said “You know I’ll never see the ACC,
any more before my eternal rest
So if you have your pencils and your note pads ready,
I’ll read you my last request”

“Give me a double overtime funeral at Centre Ice
on some snowy weekend day (no lights)
Have the organ play the National Anthem
and then a little “na, na, na, na, hey hey, hey, Goodbye

Have six league scorekeepers carry my coffin
Have six Zamboni drivers clear my path
Have the referees throw me out with all their holy wrath
Get Ward Cornell to come back,
and conduct just one more interview

Have the 67 Leafs skate out into the middle of the rink,
but have Eddie Shack race right on by
Give everybody two glazed doughnuts and a Timmy’s coffee
And I’ll be ready to die

Build a big fire in the parking lot out of old hockey sticks,
    And toss my coffin in
Let my ashes float into the beautiful snow
With help from the 40 mile an hour north west wind”

The dying man’s friends told him to cut it out
They said stop it – that’s an awful shame
He whispered, “Don’t Cry, we’ll meet by and by
at the Heavenly Hall of Fame”

He said, “I’ve got season tickets to watch Teeder now,
So that’s just what I’m going to do
but you the living, you’re stuck here with these Leafs,
So it’s me that feels sorry for you!”

And he said, “Ahh – please, play that lonesome losers’ tune,
That’s the one I like the best
And he closed his eyes, and slipped away
What he got was the Dying Leafs Fan’s Last Request

    And here it is
“Will they still whine the blues in Toronto
When the playoff season rolls around
    When the snow melts away,
    Will the Leafies still play
In their tear covered burial ground
When I was a boy they were my pride and joy
But now they only bring fatigue
To the home of the brave, the land in the North
    And the National Hockey League”

Games like tonight always make me wonder why anything has to change at all in the off season, player wise. More effort, more chemistry, less penalties, more defense: success!

But then games like the last two against Montreal make me want to flip tables.

      • Zelle

hahaha yeah that would be me in Melnyk’s office while yelling ‘wtf is this shit?!’

    • Shibal

We still let Anderson handle 42 shots against a rookie filled team.

      • Zelle

True! But clearing rebounds in front of the net, clearing the guys in front, letting Andy see the puck, those are all positives, even with a large shot count.

    • Cicero

The best value the whole community (players, management, fans) can extract from this season is to hold onto the leaders and prove next year how this squad matured from all this adversity. The Leafs, however…LOL

    • Zelle

The sad thing is that the two players the fans hate have ridiculous contracts.

The second caller just wants the whole team gone lol

Today’s fancy stat: In every game Kassian scores this season, we get eliminated from the playoffs.

He is great with the media, and I loved that he touched on the fact that the team had blown so many “solid” leads.

  • Sicilian

Chirp. Please let us down vote comments again. Or let’s at least put it to a vote

    • Millennium

Its Disqus, not Chirp’s site, that removed downvoting.

      • Sicilian

Oh ok, I thought it was a setting of Disqus he had on his site

great to see the sens win. atleast they are going down swinging. would have liked to see them in the playoffs and on cbc well into the summer…but, i will be watching the off-season movement very closely. here’s hoping for some positive changes. how many weeks until July 1st? ;)

When the Best players are the best players we win. Seems to be a pattern! Too bad they are so inconsistent.
