Free Agent Frenzy Day Has Arrived (Spezza to Dallas)

Free Agent Frenzy Day Has Arrived (Spezza to Dallas)

(UPDATE 5:20 PM)- So after that press conference with Sens GM Bryan Murray, it sounds like that’s it for Ottawa for today.  Not an overly active day for the Senators but they did deal with the Spezza situation which has to be considered a positive at this point. Not an overwhelming return but in the end Murray took the best offer placed in front of him.  Important to note that the Senators aren’t “done” for the off season.  Speaking with people around the team, it does sound like they are working on one (possibly two) more trades/signings.

(UPDATE 12:15 PM)- The Senators have signed forward Milan Michalek to a three year contract worth an average of $4 mil a season.

(UPDATE 12:13 PM)- Call it the first surprise of the day. Benoit Pouliot was a top target for the Ottawa Senators but has instead accepted a five year contract with the Edmonton Oilers. Senators will now shift their focus to other LW options.

(UPDATE 11:57 AM)- Almost time to open the flood gates.  Keep being told this is going to be a busy day for the Senators.  A couple trade options in play as well as 1 or 2 free agent signings.  Should be a fun day!

(UPDATE 11:07 AM)- Done deal.  The trade includes forward Alex Chiasson, Alex Guptil, Nicholas Paul and a second round pick to Ottawa in exchange for Jason Spezza and Ludvig Karlsson.

(UPDATE 11:04 AM)- Dallas reporter is saying Jason Spezza has been traded to Dallas. Details coming.

(UPDATE 11:01 AM)- The day is young but it sounds like the Jason Spezza trade speculation is already heating up.  Senators Assistant GM Randy Lee talked about how the Spezza deal really has a large impact on some other things they would like to do in free agency.  Add to that a tweet from a Dallas reporter suggesting that the Stars will seriously pursue Jason Spezza today.  I know we’ve all been burned before expecting a deal but I’m pretty optimistic they find a trade today.

Draft Day was a bit of a bust for the Ottawa Senators but they have a chance to redeem themselves today on what has quickly become one of the most exciting days on the NHL calendar- Free Agent Frenzy Day!

Despite operating under a fairly tight internal budget, there could be some fireworks from the Sens today.  They have been talking to a handful of free agent forwards and ideally would like to get a couple of those guys under contract today.  Benoit Pouliot is at the top of their list but they have certainly held discussions with others.

While some teams may be able to offer a little more money and perhaps a better shot at a Cup, the Sens are in a unique position in that they can offer free agents a significant role on the team.  With the entire first/second line potentially on the way out today, there are certainly openings on Ottawa’s roster for next season.

And of course there are a couple other things on Murray’s plate today including a potential Jason Spezza trade.  Once Paul Stastny signs, the teams that miss out will certainly come calling.  Whether or not Murray gets an offer he thinks is acceptable is another thing altogether but teams will certainly reach out.  During an Insider Trading segment last night, Pierre LeBrun suggested that teams like St. Louis and Dallas would be looking for a one year extension from Spezza as a condition of a deal.  Not a lot of talk about this but I see it as potentially being a major roadblock to a deal.  Hard to imagine a player poised to cash in as a UFA would give that up for a one year extension.  The teams interested in Spezza better have some flexibility on that issue.

And there’s also a potential Bobby Ryan extension in the works.  No guarantee this gets done today but just another thing to keep an eye on.

For those of you that have followed along on previous deadline and free agent days, you’ll know I usually add news and rumour updates to the top of the post so keep an eye on this post for all the latest.

Happy Canada Day/Free Agent Frenze Day everyone!

  • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I REALLY hope that by 1201 Ryan is extended.

    • Sandy

That certainly will make the fans feel a lot better.

    • spgottawa

Set yourself up for disappointment already…
Realistically the extensions may have to wait while the UFA signings happen. It could take a couple days for the extensions – Friday I’d like to have as much of this sorted out as possible. There is not a massive rush to get Ryan, MacArthur, and Methot signed today.
Top priority at noon today are the UFAs and Spezza trade right after the Stasny signing.

      • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Oh I am not expecting anything today…I have set myself up for disappointment a few too many times lately, as a matter of fact I am pretty sure I am going to hit a beach prior to noon, and leave all electronics at home as I want to enjoy my Canada Day

  • Frankie Fives

Today has to be the day this saga ends, right?

    • Magnus Nor

U really want that after all this time we sensfans have been bonding? Won´t you feel empty inside?

    • jimmyjohnson

      I wouldn’t bet on it

  • Sandy

For what it’s worth. Saw these comments in a Garrioch article.

“Colorado C Paul Stastny has gotten calls from 15 teams and he has a decision to make. He can stay with the Avs for around $6 milllion per-season or get a deal in the $7 million-plus ranger on the open market. Two teams told me Stastny wants a four-year deal with every intention of going back to the Avs when it expires if he does go elsewhere.”
So he’s going to leave a place he loves to play for a difference of about 4M over four years?

    • spgottawa

Wow! 15 teams talking to Stasny? If that’s the case it’s great news. Increases the odds that he doesn’t go to St. Louis, Dallas, Chicago, or re-sign in Colorado. Also means there may be a few more teams interested in a top centre that haven’t been mentioned much

      • jimmyjohnson

He’s probably cut all but a few teams out by now. STL is still in, CHI is still in, COL is still in… It wouldn’t surprise me if NJD and NYR were still in too. Other than those $5, I doubt there are many teams still in play.

    • jimmyjohnson

He can probably make $7.8-$8M on the market. That’s an extra $7-8M more to play for a top contender. That’s more than 1 years salary with the avs

  • Senswest

I still see Col being involve here about a Spezza trade as soon as they loose out on Statsny!!! Spezza + Wier for ROR

    • Andrews theory

If Colorado loses Statsny, I can’t see them walking from ROR as well. They are a team on the cusp of contention and those two played a major role in that

      • PraiseAlfie11

Or, they were a disaster before Roy came on and got more out of them that they ever imagined. If Roy can’t repeat the magic, they are on the outside looking in again.

Parallel to Ottawa the year before?

  • Andrews theory

I had a peek at Colorados roster and prospects and I’m not sure there is a deal there to be had.

I would think Parenteau was one of the pieces that would have come back and he’s now gone.

Ottawa could ask for McGinn, Sgarbossa and a 2015 1st but I don’t know that either of these guys meet what Murray would be looking for. Sgarbossa is small and McGinn has limited offense

    • Senswest

      Spezza + Wier for ROR

      • Andrews theory

Would be amazing (although I like Wiercioch a lot)

Just can’t see Colorado parting with Parenteau, Statsny and ROR in one offseason

        • Senswest

Yes but that take care of their center position and they need to had defense!!! ya it would be amazing!!!

  • Sandy

I think some of you have mentioned this Cup 06 that posts on HB. He had this comment:

There have been ongoing conversations between the Sens and Avs. There is potential for a multi player deal. I think both teams have to see where they come out at the end of the next couple of days depending alon successful acquisitions.

Both teams are on a budget well below the cap. Sens do have some money to spend however.

    • SensChirp

Now, now, let’s just remember who mentioned talks with Avalanche first. And about 50 times since then haha

      • Andrews theory

So what do you think the pieces would be?

        • SensChirp

I’d be speculating, on that part.
Ottawa has obviously asked about Ryan O’Reilly but there would have to be a lot more involved.

          • Senswest

one of our defense would have to be had!!!

          • Frankie Fives

They’d also have to talk with ROR first or make sure the Avs sign him to a long term deal before the trade

      • Sandy

True Chirp. I read that you mentioned it first.
The issue with that, is who are they offering?

  • CUP 2014-15

What a day and what a great Nation. Happy Canada Day all, and here’s to the Sens celebrating more then the birth of a great Country. Bring on the Spezza trade, bring on 2 or 3 UFA’s and bring on the signing of BR, CMac Methot and Robin. Let this be a day where we can’t finish a beer or Caesar(a Canadian gift to us drinkers) without yet more news from the Capital. Chirp, please lock the back door so that Tooks cant find his way in. Lets have some fun, send out those positive waves man (puff). 2 hours and counting.

  • Millennium
    • Sensturion

      Iginla is a winger.

      • Millennium

        They are on a budget.

        • Sensturion

They are willing to offer Stastny 6 mil.

          • Millennium

Which is about what Iggy is gonna ask for

    • Sandy

So they would use Iginla to replace ROR and Spezza to replace Stastny.
I can’t see Ottawa getting ROR. He wants about 6.5M. I can’t see Melnyk going for two players at or above that range. Doesn’t fit the budget.

      • Frankie Fives

Sure it does. We lose Spezza’s $7 million and replace it with ROR’s $6.5

        • Millennium

Well no, Spezza’s $ is 4M, and its this season only. ROR will be 6.5 for presumably 3-4 years. That will eat up the money they have earmarked to resign all our young guys.

          • jimmyjohnson

ROR will be getting an Eric Staal level contract or more.

lmao at $6.5M…and now just for 3-4 years????? lololololoookokk

          • Millennium

            Calm down Glen Sather

          • jimmyjohnson

            He’s part of it, sure.

An offer sheet on this guy would have to tough $9M to outbid and have a chance at retaining him.

          • Millennium

I don’t think you can offersheet a guy in arbitration? Maybe I’m wrong though.

He either gets a 1/2 yr from the arbiter, or signs something independently with the Aves. I doubt he takes anything longer than 3/4 years at what they would be offering. The only other option is a trade, and I’m not convinced Aves will do that this summer.

          • jimmyjohnson

            Oh yeah!!! I forgot. Thanks.

        • jimmyjohnson

          lmao at ROR for $6.5M!!

You realize that’s qualifying offer, right??

          loloolll

  • Sandy

Not sure what Colorado has in prospects for a return. I don’t see any big names there, but then again I don’t know them all.
How about a crazy trade. Spezza, Wiercioch, Greening, Sens 1st rounder in 2016 for Gabriel Landeskog. LOL
I’m sure Sakic would hang the phone up pretty quickly.

    • Sensturion

Half the team and a draft pick for Landeskog? That’s actually a really bad trade for COL.

      • Sandy

        It was a joke.

  • SuckitPhaneuf

Dont buy into all the hype boys
Today is a win if we can sign Ryan and pick up a quality winger
Spezza will still be a Sen at the end of the day, it is going to be a long summer and he is likely traded in September or October

    • SensChirp

Nearly impossible deal to make in September and October with his cap hit. Teams will have their rosters set by then. No team wants to wait till then

    • EK65

I agree about the FA hype, but I still believe that as long as Murray is pushing for a deal (which will be now until training camp) we will continue to hear about Spezza rumors.

  • EK65

My patience has been tested far too much this off-season. There I sat, days ahead of time before the draft, refreshing my Twitter feed for and Spezza news, only to find that nothing happened at the draft. Now I’m supposed to wait another HOUR until anyone can be signed? This is bullshit.

  • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Brent Wallace basically said the Spezza deal has to fall in place before the Sens know where they stand in other regards…. Hopefully that means today is the day

  • Millennium

Sens AGM Randy Lee “Bryan was very active at the draft talking to a lot of guys so he’s got some things in place but it’s all going to fall into the big package. With Jason in play that’s sort of the big domino that has to fall to figure out where everything else fits.”

I dunno if he means ‘package’ as in a trade package, or meant the ‘big picture’ instead.

  • EK65

Huzzah. RT @MikeHeika: I’m hearing Stars are very serious about trying to get Jason Spezza today.

    WOHOOOO!

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Good.. They have been the team I wanted all along.

Now the big question, are they in his list?

      • sprucesens

no they are not on his list. That’s per me as the source. lol. NO MORE LISTS

      • Sandy

So I assume the Dallas is not in the Stastny sweepstakes anymore. Stastny must be headed to St Louis.

      • EK65

They aren’t, media members clarified this within the last couple days i believe. The original error was made by Lebrun but he retracted it.

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

But he had to submit a new list today didn’t he?

    Thank God I’m drunk already…

    • Andrews theory

St Louis was trying to rape us, this will be the better deal..

      • jimmyjohnson

Unless we know Stl wins Stastny, their earlier offers are irrelevant to me.

Once they lose that option (assuming they can’t sign him) they come forward with a proper offer.

My guess is that DAL held back Chiasson until now or let Murray have one of the 2 prospects they weren’t interested in trading initially.

        • Andrews theory

Chiasson was the guy I’d been gunning for for a few weeks now.

Big, powerful player that can slide into the top 6 and still young

Let’s make one thing clear: Jason Spezza has asked to be dealt several times in his career in Ottawa. #Sens

    #DRAMMAAAAAAAAA

    • Spoons

Garrioch and Brenan are the main reasons why Spezza asked to leave

    • Aaron 2.0

If true, what was he doing lobbying for captain? I’m not sure what I think of this or if I believe it. Maybe Murray will clarify, but will likely never know.

  • EK65

I know the Sens are limited, but does this mean that we also could be looking to land a winger like Moulson?

    • Sensturion

We have no choice, really. We’re WAYYYYY below the cap floor

      • EK65

        Niskanen and Moulson please!!

        • Sensturion

Niskanen looked good on an offensive team. He was average at best in Dallas.

  • esk

Alex Guptill: A big body that quickly impressed Michigan coach Red Berenson with his offensive ability. A terrific goal scorer that exudes offensive potential. He thinks on a high-level and can keep up with talented offensive minds. He goes to the front of the net well and can score on the rush with a quality wrister. A good skater that protects the puck well. Still learning the game and his defensive responsibilities. He has a very projectable frame and could grow into a rather powerful forward down the line.

  • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

So I’m guessing it’s fair to assume nobody predicted that trade haha

    • Spoons

      With those 2 shitty prospects… nope…

      • EK65

Guptill isn’t shitty. Will play for the Sens next year (2015-2016)

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Everyone is going to rage because they don’t know the prospects.. Chiasson is potentially good.. Guptill I agree could play in a year or two and be decent.. Other guy I haven’t heard of. And happy with a second next year too.. May be able to move up with that

  • KJ

Let’s surprise everyone and nab Stastny. ;)

    • Spoons

Stastny and Pouliot would be a complete redemption

      • EK65

How awesome would that be? Don’t think the Sens are close to being in on him though.

      • KJ

Murray warned us he would not be winning the trade. Good prospect haul, and the pick. Chaisson makes the team. Will be interesting to see how they plan on filling out the team. We didn’t qualify 6 RFA’s, so some prospects to replace these we gave up on like Cowick and O’Brien.

  • Richard Gough

Does everyone feel that is a fair return for Spezza ? I am still on the fence

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

After hearing the rumoured deals I’m happy with it

    • jimmyjohnson

That’s usually a good thing. I think the value is good. Spezza’s the best player in the deal though…clearly.

    • Sandy

Chiasson is better than a 3rd line injured centre.

    • laffin681021

I think it was probably the best Murray was going to get. We were all hoping for big time prospects or roster players that teams just weren’t willing t give up for Spezza. Like it, or hate it, we got Chiasson and a 2nd in a deep draft next year.

      • dazillion

You don’t think Bonino, Sbisa, and the 24th pick would have been better??

        • Frankie Fives

          Yes, much better

        • sprucesens

i’d say its about the same. but we went with better offensive potential

        • jimmyjohnson

          No that’s much worse.

        • laffin681021

Bonino has only played 1 complete season since coming into the league and by “complete” I mean 77 games. thus far his highest production has come this year with 49 pts (22 goals). when we get into advanced stats, it seems like Bonino is on the negative side of them. Chiasson has reached 35 pts (13 goals) in his first full season (79 games). Chiasson has more upside…Chiasson any day of the week over Bonino (have not looked into Chiasson’s advanced stats BTW). Sbisa is no better than what we already have in our system as a defenseman and the 2nd next year will be just as good as a late first this year, on top of OUR trade we get two prospects that can possibly be a solid 3rd line players in a few years. so yes I take our trade over Bonino, Sbisa, and a 1st this year

  • Sensturion

    Capgeek already updated haha

  • Sandy
  • Dirtysweetness

I’m pleasantly surprised. I hoped we be able to nab a defensman as well. Good job Murray!

    • dazillion

      wut

  • aegiszx

More importantly guys… that young line is going to be exciting to watch…

    Mac – Turris – Ryan
    X – Zibby – Chiasson

    • EK65

      Moulson please.

      • jimmyjohnson

I really hope not. I was ambivalent about it yesterday, played a little devils adv, but after thinking about it more, I’m very much against it.

    • Mat

In an ideal world, Zibby should not be on that second line this year. One more year of refinement on the third would be better…

      • Andrews theory

He needs more ice time I think he’ll do fine

    • jimmyjohnson

      Anybody but Michalek!

  • karlssens

I’m already not a fan of that trade.. Is this chiassen guy good?

  • EK65

I think people are forgetting about that 2nd rounder in 2015. Very deep draft. Worth a late 1st rounder in other draft years.

  • Sandy

I was just hoping for a prospect off their Texas Stars team.

    • Andrews theory

We’re better off getting longer term prospects at this point so there is a steady flow of talent

  • Andrews theory

I’m quite happy with the return

    Well done Murray!

  • The Apostle

that trade frees up a decent chunk of change to spend elsewhere. This may actually be an interesting free agency for the sens.

I honestly think we have the money to sign somebody decent.

    • jimmyjohnson

I wouldn’t get my hopes up

      • The Apostle

well there are two things – we are currently 5-6 million below the cap floor and losing spezza’s and michalek’s salaries takes 10 million away from last season’s salary bill.

  • dazillion

    This sucks.

    • jimmyjohnson

No, this was a great result.

  • Sandy

So do they go after Cammareli for 2nd line centre for about 5M for a couple of seasons?

    • Mat

      That’s a plausible acquisition.

      • Sandy

        Or Grabovski & Kulemin?

        • Mat

          Hope not!

    • sprucesens

i hope cammy, vrbata, pouliot in that order

  • Mat

I still have a glimmer of hope that the 2nd rounder becomes a 1st if Spezza signs long term..

  • Sandy

I wonder if Spezza will take out a full page ad thanking Ottawa the way Fisher did.

    • aegiszx

I can see a big fat F U “this is for Jacques, this is for Clouston, this is for Hartsburg”…

    • jimmyjohnson

It should be a big picture of his goofiest grin and it should say “Thanks for nothing, Jerks!!” lollol

  • Mr Hockey

Meh. Don’t think he would be signing here next year anyways so at least we got something. It’ll be interesting to see how we hit the floor. Does Pouliot and signing rfa’s get us there or do they still need to do something else?

    • jimmyjohnson

One signing and Lehner should take care of it.

  • Millennium

Keep in mind this opens up significant budget space, so we are almost certainly going after some player(s) today

    • Mat

I hope it not Grabovski/Kulemin like Yost is praying for..

      • Sandy

They are good puck possession guys. That’s what the Sens want.

        • dazillion

Cheap, that’s what the Sens want.

  • whammer44

Good to hear there was no salary retained

    • jimmyjohnson

We retained it by paying it a few years ago.

  • Sensturion

I kind of feel like Murray chose Dallas simply because Spezza turned down other teams.

  • Aaron 2.0

Anyone watch a lot of hockey out west, who could comment a little bit on Chiasson? I know he was a piece of few of you were hoping would come back. The knock seems to be his defense, which is sort of backed up by his +/- last year. But, I’d love to here a few thoughts (strengths / weakness and potential ceiling)

    • Keregan

poward foward, strong shot, good skater 900k in salary 23 year old

  • Keregan

Better return than Berglund rattie etc

    • Mat

Really? I find that hard to believe right now. Excited for Chiasson but otherwise..

      • Keregan

Chiassion already a better player than berglund younger and cheaper

        • Mat

Its potentially missing out on Rattie that’s the issue in the package.

          • Keregan

we have Puempel don’t need rattie

      • Sandy

Just because we don’t know who these young guys are doesn’t mean they aren’t any good.

    • dazillion

      No, it really isn’t.

      • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

        Yes it really is

    • jimmyjohnson

      Insanely better.

This post made me happy. This return is miles better than that crap.

      • Keregan

        yup definitly

  • Sandy

So we are 4.7M from the floor with about 3M going to Pouliot (I’m assuming). Plus the $$ for Lehner. No problem getting to the floor.

    • karlssens

They have said many times we are not a floor team. We will be in the middle as speculated by Garrioch. 56-57

    • laffin681021

Sign Lehner and Pouliot and we can all speculate on another FA that Murray is/wants to sign or get in a different trade

  • Pugnacious Serf

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJ7I6LlC_fg

Nick Paul, looks like another Mark Stone.

  • whammer44

    Bruce Arthur ‏@bruce_arthur 1m
Ottawa doesn’t get a lot for Jason Spezza, unless you consider “not paying his salary” a lot. Well, it is Ottawa.

  • Millennium

This is a trade where we really have to trust our scouting staff’s ability to see diamonds where others see coal

  • PaulMacLeansDuster

3 power forwards and a 2nd round pick for Spezza. I’m happy with the return.

    • Pugnacious Serf

Dido. Ottawa just got a lot bigger. And all are 200ft hockey players.

      • Sensturion

        Chiasson is shitty defensively.

        • PaulMacLeansDuster

So was Spezza. And defence can be taught, especially to a rookie.

          • sprucesens

thought the coaches that trained spezza for the last 12 years. lol

          • laffin681021

Different player, different mind set. Can’t compare apples with oranges

        • Sandy

          He’s 23 and still learning.

  • Richard Gough

I was so hopping that JAMIE OLEKSIAK would been apart of the package

    • Spoons

I was too, but I`ve been reading he is soft

    • jimmyjohnson

I was praying my ass off that he wasn’t.

You’ll see over his career why you shouldn’t want him. You’ll see…

  • whammer44

Keep in mind Dallas has paid this for one year of Spezza

    • Keregan

      most important point

  • PraiseAlfie11

I don’t get people here. They say Spezza is a defensive liability and needs to go, so they get a guy who was a -21 and the hockey news says “Must also improve his defensive play”, yet the cheers are deafening.

I really don’t get it…we just lost our most talented offensive player and our real 1C for a salary dump. Unless there’s a huge signing in 35 mins, this team just took a major step back.

    • laffin681021

He may be willing to learn..he’s only 23

    • Aaron 2.0

The +/- number is ugly, but it was his first full NHL season.

      • PraiseAlfie11

TSN guys all say his is a 3rd liner.

YIPPIE!!! Another 3rd line guy…plus another two future third liners!

        • Sandy

          That’s McGuire saying that.

    • The Apostle

there is a huge difference between a guy who is 23 and still learning the name and a 31 year old who showed no inclination to improve that side of thing

yes, this may be a step backwards offensively for next years but this makes us a better team (somewhat dependant on what else happens this off season) down the road

      • PraiseAlfie11

I don’t agree, not for 1 second. Not one player is a point/game player at any level.

This was a huge salary dump. Vive les expos!

  • SensFanInMTL

Say what you will. This trade we clearly lost. I don’t know.

Happy Canada Day tout le monde.

Edit: Prove me wrong kids. Prove me wrong.

    • laffin681021

Murray said we would lose it 3 weeks ago. We weren’t getting the calibre of player that Spezza is back.

    • aegiszx

We were never going to “win it” though. I’m not sure if people around here were overestimating Spezza’s value or what?

    • Pugnacious Serf

We got four bodies back, I think the organization comes out of this ok.

  • spgottawa

Sens do this deal before noon because they expect to sign a UFA or two. They’ve dropped a bunch of payroll so they can be active.

    • Aaron 2.0

Hopping so, hard to know Ottawa’s mindset these days. But, really hoping there is some room to play.

  • Mr Hockey

34 minutes until Daniel Alfredsson signs in Ottawa.. please?

    • laffin681021

Why do people want him back? Move on already!

      • Mr Hockey

He’s my favourite player. I’m not saying we sign him for our cup run.. I’d just love to have him back so the fans could give him an actual goodbye. One year of his leadership would hardly hurt development.
(I realise this won’t happen. But one can dream)

        • laffin681021

Let’s just sign him to a one day contract when he decides to retire so he can go out as a Sen…kind of like what Modano did

  • Frankie Fives

I was hoping for Roussel. He’s a player I really like. I’ll trust the scouts on this one

    • Keregan

Roussel got less skill than Chiassion,he is more a 3rd line energy guy a la Neil

      • Frankie Fives

        He had 14 goals…

  • Spoons

Hey Melnyk, try selling tickets with such a shitty lineup…

    • jimmyjohnson

If the goaltending is even as marginal as it was last year and if the young D finally progress, this team as it’s constructed right now is going to make the playoffs.

  • NOBODY can play with Spezza

    GOOD BYE PORK PIE

  • knightstemplar

Terrible! Ottawa gets three guys who were 2nd, 3rd and 4th round Dallas picks – Terrible!

    • karlssens

Can’t believe he tricked Murray into getting his garbage. I thought these trades only existed on the boards!

      • Pugnacious Serf

        Somebody needs a hug.

        • jimmyjohnson

Come here buddy. I’ll give you a hug!

          Karlssens can suck it though.

Just be patient guys. This is a good trade. Possibly very good, but definitely good.

          • karlssens

He meant I need a hug lmao..
            Dumbass.

          • jimmyjohnson
          • sprucesens

its better than losing spezza for nothing in 1 year

          • Pugnacious Serf

I love this trade, this IS a hockey trade, and some might not believe we won today, we did.

      • jimmyjohnson

        Are you trolling right now?

You don’t even know these players… You’ve seen Chiasson play, what(?) once? and he didn’t produce in that game so you didn’t even know he was playing??

Yeah, why not wait to see these guys play first before getting your panties in a bunch?!

      • Sandy

Just because you haven’t heard of two of these prospects doesn’t mean they are bad.

    • jimmyjohnson

Paul Stastny was a 2nd round pick…He’s about to sign for $8M.

    • aegiszx

Stone, Wiercioch, and Methot were also picks outside of the first round… but I’m sure these guys are terrible, no one would want them right?

      • NOBODY can play with Spezza

        P K Subban too

      • Long Time Lurker

        Alfredson

      • jimmyjohnson

        You’re reaching with this one…

        Stastny, Lucic, Subban, Lidstrom, ROR…

all these guys and plenty more were 2nd round picks.

    • Frankie Fives

Zetterberg? Alfie? Lundqvist? All shitty late round picks???

  • SensFanInMTL

It is what it is. If it sounded like me complaining, it’s cause my debit card expired and I can’t withdraw $ and I’m across the street from today’s festivities and I’m dehydrated. Best of luck to Spezza and welcome our new boys!

  • Moudy Mahfouz

I really don’t like the Spezza trade but you gotta think Murray has other stuff on his mind and he is only getting started, Pretty excited for Chiasson. I will def miss Spezza. But stay patient Murray is going to be very busy today

    • Sandy

Murray wanted a big physical guy to play on the 3rd line. That’s Chiasson. Or would you rather have Chris Stewart. Unless Murray is going after him as well.
      OR Evander Kane maybe?

  • SuckitPhaneuf

Spezza is a UFA next season
    Dallas gave up alot

    • jimmyjohnson

How can I plus one this more and pin it to every subsequent post bitching about the return?

  • BeJamin

Lol scraps for Spezza. Franchise embarrassment complete

    • Pugnacious Serf

Stop being such a drama queen.

    • jimmyjohnson

      ?

      trolling.

    • Conor_smythe

      yup

  • Terry

Alex Chiasson -> “Potential top-six playmaking winger, like a more talented version of Blake Wheeler.”

    On Hockey Future.

  • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Our fanbase is nuts… Everyone is super high on Stone(a sixth round pick).. But is bitching about this return because of their draft spots.

    • aegiszx

Hahahahhaha when everyone else picks: “What a shitty pick! No one wants that!”

Yet when we pick: “BM is a GENIUS for finding this gem”

      • Millennium

This is my sentiment. We trust our scouts at the draft, so trust them here.

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Exactly.. If our scouts liked these guys now, they may have been high on them before and went before we could take them.

I’m actually very pleasantly surprised with the return

    • jimmyjohnson

      Stone is the tits.

      • zippy

Can’t stop laughing at your post.

  • Mat

    MacArthur Turris Ryan
    ?? ?? Chiasson
    Pouliot Zibanedjad Stone
    Hoffman Smith Neil
    Puemple/Lazar

I think Greening or Condra is moved today. Greening IMO.

    • Pugnacious Serf

      MacArthur Turris Ryan
      Pouliout or Michalek Zibanajed Chaisson
      Greening Smith Neil
      Hoffman Grant/Lazar Stone/Condra

      Greening isn’t going anywhere.

    • jimmyjohnson

Well, our GM just said that Zibanejad is out 1st line center, so….

    • sprucesens

      one can hope

    • knightstemplar

      Yes, pls move Greening

  • aegiszx

    Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun 1m
So in a league where it’s seemingly impossible to acquire top-end centers, Jim Nill picks up Tyler Seguin and Jason Spezza within 12 months

    • aegiszx

Ken Holland has mentored him well…

  • knightstemplar

I hope Murray makes a big splash in the UFA market. Come on Eugene – open the purse strings!

  • esk

how is chiasson any different than Schwartz (midget) or Tarasenko (russian)?

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

What.. How are they even the same? This makes zero sense

      • esk

        in terms of potiential..

        • jimmyjohnson

          I’d argue Taras = nichu
          Black = chase

  • Dirtysweetness

So Chirp, who won the Wisers package? Lol

    • SensChirp

I think I did, by default.

      • Dirtysweetness

Now that’s a happy Canada Day!

      • sprucesens

haha, those were the rules. Chirp wins if no one guess’s correct

        • Nikola Todorić

like us all chirp is just sad that Spezza is gone and the trade sucked.

Look out for the “after second thought, the trade is OK” article tomorrow.

          • Mr Hockey

I think the headline will be “on first glance, given the situation the trade is ok”.

          • jimmyjohnson

            lmao so good

          • SensChirp

I haven’t said anything negative about the deal

          • Nikola Todorić

I thought this wisers package was a bundle of alcohol. And you wanted it for the sorrow. ma bad.

      • Mr Hockey

        Congrats on the big win!

      • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Chirp is it too late to enter hahaha

  • laffin681021

I could care less bout the negative comments here I’m excited to have and watch Chiasson play. 35 points in his first full NHL season with plenty of time to improve is pretty exciting if you ask me. not to mentions we get a 2nd in a really deep draft and Guptil could be solid a few years down the line.

    • karlssens

No matter how we spin it, it’s a bad trade for the next few seasons at least. Should have been a conditional first.

      • laffin681021

going to have a hard time getting a team to give up their first in next years draft

    • Dirtysweetness

I agree. We weren’t going to win this trade to begin with. IMO it’s a better package than what Nashville offered.

      • zippy

A big part of it is Dallas allowed it without the extra year. Spezza is UFA after the year. Dallas gave up a fair bit.

3 200 lb’ers. Chiasson projected to be better than Blake Wheeler.

        It’s a fair trade.

  • Spoons

Lebrun points out that DAL GM got Seguin and Spezza as the teams top 2 centers within 12 months without ruining the core. Dallas is going places.

  • Nikola Todorić

Personally, hate the trade. Don’t know much about the other two prospects, but i don’t really give a fuck about prospects anymore… half our fucking team is a bunch of AHLers and prospects.

    • KJ

      Boo!

    • laffin681021

I think you need a hug

      • Nikola Todorić

        I’m just being realistic…

    • Mr Hockey

I like the part where you said you hate the trade, and then followed it up saying you don’t know much about the players involved..

      • Nikola Todorić

Like I said, It’s frustrating to get prospects for a franchise #1C considering the ‘budget’ situation.

        It’s really a ‘meh’ situation.

    • Jakester

      sniff sniff

  • ProfessorPower

We just cleared 6 mil in cap space..I wonder whats next.

    • Spoons

      Garrioch said another trade comming

      • sprucesens

maybe we piece something together with nashville for players that don’t have NTC?

  • knightstemplar

Why could BM not get AT LEAST ONE LEGIT, ESTABLISHED TOP 6 FORWARD out of this deal

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Why can our fans never be content

      • Spoons

We would be if it were a 1-for-1 deal instead of a ’4 quarters for a loonie” type deal

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

And by Murray not doing that deal it obviously wasn’t an option… In this case it involved three parties… Both teams needed to agree as well as Spezza

This is real gming not NHL 14

      • jimmyjohnson

Seriously. If anyone was going to be hard on this trade, it was me. And I’m good with it. Everyone should relax.

    • Pugnacious Serf

Isn’t that what he did with Chaisson?

      • aegiszx

Seriously… They werent going to get Nichuskin, Seguin, or Benn. After that, Dallas’ top 6 are very old guys in Cole, Whitney, Horcoff, Peverley, Garbutt.

It was realistically down to Eakins or Chiasson.

    • NOBODY can play with Spezza

SIMPLE – other GMs are not fools
Spezza in NOT THAT GOOD anymore

      • zippy

        He was good WHEN HEALTHY.

Senators are entering a new era. It’s exciting.

  • sprucesens

hahaha, runner up to spezza in st. louis

2 teams in the running for Dave Bolland are the Panthers ans the Blues. #tvasports

  • aegiszx

Chiasson has 42 pts in 86 games.
Zibby has 53 pts in 111 games.

    Not too shabby.

Time for Zib and Lazar to step up and play like men

    • Sensturion

      Chiasson, Zibby and Stone/Lazar

    • laffin681021

Relax…Lazar hasn’t even played an NHL game yet. He’ll be good but I don’t think he’ll be that good right off the bat. Now this IS the time for Zib to step up I can agree with you on that.

      • PraiseAlfie11

Dude…Lazar has literally been named next captain on this very board.

DO not underestimate fans ability to vastly overestimate rookies.

      • T K

Partially, it’s wishful thinking for Lazar but unless things change dramatically later today and this week, his window of opportunity will not get any wider than this season

    • sprucesens

i’m very excited to see zib in the top 6 permanently, playing with our BEST players, not the garbage he has been with the last 2 years. No more neil, greening, condra, kassian and so on with him

        • sprucesens

yeah, i devote most of my life to hockey, no time for other sports. However, if i were already in a location and someone offered tickets, i’d probably go to any live sport. However, i prefer ANY level of hockey over every other sport. But that’s just my sport tastes, not knocking other’s interests

nich is just the next top name. Chiasson has nearly the same potential. Produced the same, playing with less talent/minutes. we got a 2nd which is really good, and another bottom 6 power forward, as well as a player to fill in, in bingo. Not a bad return.

    • Aaron 2.0

Like yesterday on news of who we’d be targeting in free agency, I’m from the neutral planet on this one. It is what it is. Bad market. Only 1 year on #19′s contract. Injury issues. Defensive issues. Mobility issues last year. Hopefully, Chaisson’s game will continue to develop nicely (and Spezza looks like a pile of shit as he gets older). Still a little surprised Dallas didn’t give up a 1st. They shouldn’t be drafting particularly early next year…

  • Millennium

Colin Greening is our 4th highest paid forward…..

    • Spoons

      LMAO!

    • karlssens

Apparently on the way out today.

      • EK65

        Hope so!

      • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

If we don’t get Malkin for Greening I will be pissed!

    • peetypuck

Who is the 5th highest player?

      • Millennium

Neil, Smith, Condra are the next forwards on the salary list. Doesnt look at D or G

hopefully prince and a D for another winger or upgraded D

I’d be fine in parting ways with either Prince or Hoffman. I’d like to keep both Stone and Puempel

  • aegiszx

With Spezza gone, we are into the new Sens era… Well, Phillips and Neil are still here for whatever reason… but it’s exciting to say the least… We are officially into the Turris/Karlsson era…

  • Cicero

I like the value in return for Spezza! Pending they aren’t flipped in a follow-up trade, Chaisson and Guptil both are young, talented players that will fit into this quasi-rebuilding going on with the Sens. They’d fit well into PMac’s system, and grow alongside Zibby, Stone, Hoffman, and Lazar.

    • PraiseAlfie11

Quasi-rebuild??? We just lost our whole 1st line man!

I lived through the expos. This “trade” is along the lines of what the expos did after 94.

      • Cicero

Quasi, in the sense that the young players already established as NHL level, are going to step-up. We have a competitive team, and in just got better. I supposed it comes down to expeectations and interpretation of changes.

  • Dirtysweetness

I think we see an upgrade on defense plus an additional winger.

  • Sensturion

    3 minutes.

  • SuckitPhaneuf

Blue chip prospects for a pending UFA
    If spezza doesnt resighn
    Who won this?

    • Sensturion

Obviously Ottawa. It’s exactly like the Ryan trade. If Ryan doesn’t resign, Anaheim wins.

  • OleHeaveHoFlipperoooni

This is tough to read!! You guys are pathetic. Chiasson is SICK!!! And tje kids coming back could very well turn into nhl ready players next for 2015-16

Trade wasn’t a steal for us. It had very little chance of being a steal. If course this is all “at first glance” see if we’re saying we hot hosed in 5 years. I don’t think so

Now go spend some money Murray

    • ProfessorPower

Give me the ho down on Chiasson

      • sprucesens

chiasson was probably similar to picking up silf in terms of potential. Less goal scoring, but still very good, however chiasson plays a harder game in power forward mold.

  • Kielbasa

I’m just happy the Spezza fiasco is done with so we can move on to more positive things for this team.

The trade doesn’t bring in a franchise player just yet, but I’m hoping that Murray isn’t finished. Chiasson was a good pick up. A good start.

  • SensChirp

Remember, updates will appear at the top of this post as I get them. Not automatically, of course. Reeeeeefresh.

    • sprucesens

      good luck!

  • Spoons

Its 12:00. Let the circus begin!

  • jimmyjohnson

I wonder if this indicates that Jim Nill think STL will lose out on Stastny, so he got ahead of it.

    • sprucesens

      Dallas signs stastny TOO?…..lol

  • Sandy

Maybe now the return doesn’t sound so bad

    The 6th Sens @6thSens · 14m

Per Hockey Prospectus’ 2013 org rankings, the Sens acquired the seventh, ninth and Paul (who wasn’t ranked) amongst Dallas’ top 15 prospects

    • RUSH RLZ

That sounds like a giant turd.

      • Doc

        That’s the spirit.

        • RUSH RLZ

Time will tell, but at a glance does an orgs 7th and 9th ranked prospects sound like a solid return for a star centerman?

They are going to sign Hemsky too. Imagine that one of the best teams in the league gunning for the Spezza/Hemsky tandem that we threw away. Dallas fans are rightfully thrilled.

          • Sandy

Neither wanted to stay. What were the Sens going to do?

          • Doc

Meh, we’ll see. Excited to see the big kid with Zibby.

  • OleHeaveHoFlipperoooni

I was hoping a trade with Dallas would bring us Brendan Dillon

  • Mat

Jim Nill: “We brought Jason for the sole purpose of reviving Erik Cole.”

  • Dirtysweetness

I’m surprised we got as much without a contract extension.

  • Pasky

I’m happy with Chiasson. A big, young power forward with a top 6 ceiling, which is basically what BM was looking for anyways. And a 2nd round pick in this year’s draft may end up being equal to a late first round pick from this year’s draft. And it’s not impossible to think BM uses a couple 2nd rounders to move up the draft.

  • Pasky

Erhoff in Pittsburgh for 1 year 4M deal.

Smart for him, play with Crosby/Malkin, pad his stats then sign another big contract like the one he got bought out of.

    • Millennium

Good deal for them, not sure why he took that though. He could have gotten more term elsewhere easily. I guess his buy out money lets him look to contend over getting paid as a priority

  • sprucesens

    still hope we get vrbata

  • Sensturion

Sounds like St. Louis doesn’t expect to get Stastny.

    • Pasky

      Good

    • sprucesens

i hope they overpay for bolland, like rumoured, lol

    • Dirtysweetness

      F U St.Lou! That’s what happens when you low-ball others.

  • SpezzaFan19.

    Murray should sign Thomas Vanek

    • laffin681021

      I’d rathar we get Cammalleri

      • EK65

Yeah. Cami/Moulson over Vanek any day.

      • Pasky

Agree with this, depending on how much he costs. I imagine he gets 5.5M a year somewhere.

  • hq8

SO ZIBANEJAD FINALLY 2C? or do they do the stupidity of giving it to Pageau or Smith

    • Pasky

Not that stupid, although I hope they trade Greening so that Smith doesn’t have to play with plugs all year.

  • Cicero

I wish him all the best, but I’m happy it’s all over with and we can move on.
Summer can be a distraction when somebody asks for a trade request.

    huehuehuehuehue

  • Doc

Lol at the Ehrhoff contract…. We could ahve offered 5 x 3 or something. Silly.

    • EK65

He wants a chance to win.

      • Doc

You mean we’re not contenders?? But Murray/Melnyk said…

    • sprucesens

      cup

    • aegiszx

True but we cant offer Malkin, Sid, Letang, Kunitz… He thinks the Pens can win the Cup next season.

      • laffin681021

not with MAF in between the pipes. His glory day’s are over IMO

  • Sandy

When Dallas first came up as a destination — a lot of you said Chiasson would be good. So they got Chiasson and now he’s no good?

    • Doc

Sandy, you’ve seen how things were in here the last few weeks. You can’t tell me you’re surprised by this.

      • Sandy

        I guess not.
For Sens fans not to complain about the return it would have had to be Seguin & Benn.

        • Dirtysweetness

There was the same fallout when Murray dealt Runblad for Turris.

          • Doc

Exactly. That turned out not too bad, didn’t it? :)

          • Dirtysweetness

            In Murray, I trust.

          • Doc

            Indeed.

          • RUSH RLZ

Trust in him or not, early indications points toward us being set back to more of a ‘rebuild’ mode. May as well do it right then, ‘tank’ for next year. Trade Ryan today, he will be gone after next year anyways. Explore getting rid of Greening, MacArthur, Neil, Methot, Anderson, Smith…

          • Doc

I don’t mind that though. It should have been done properly the first time. Melnyk didn’t want to do a full rebuild and now we are in the situation we are now.

          • RUSH RLZ

99% of the fans ADORED that trade when it happened, myself included. I was ecstatic.

          • Doc

Bah, I remember a lot of people questioning it. Seeing as Turris had ‘attitude’ problem it seemed.

          • Sens-fan-in-mtl

not true at all, I remember vividly how everyone on here was saying how bad of a trade it was, Runblad was so great, Turris was a reject and didn’t pan out, blah, blah, blah…people seem to have selective memories.

    • Michenator

I think this trade could turn out great BUT unfortunately it’s gonna take some patience, which our fans may not have…

      • Sandy

Sens fans do complain a lot.

    • Pasky

Course he’s still good. The sensible people said Chiasson, the louder people on Cloud 9 said Nichuskin, so this becomes a downer for most. I think getting a 2nd over a 1st bothers some as well but I’m ok with this deal.

      • Doc

Bingo. People that will complain are the same that thought we were getting Josi + Forsberg + 1st. Of course they’re disappointed.

        • sprucesens

that was my pick!! lol. but it was spezza, wiercioch 2nd, for josi, forsberg 1st

          • Doc

            No offense meant! ;)

          • sprucesens

none taken, i’m not a crazy fan, just trying to make a guess that was different than everyone else

          • sprucesens

also, who knows, maybe it was their offer? lol

        • sprucesens

but no, i’m not disappointed. I like chiasson as the main piece.

    • Sensnation

He’d be good as part of the deal, not the main piece.

      • Sandy

The Sens weren’t going to get 2 roster players for Spezza.

        • Sensnation

No I know, I would’ve preferred a better prospect or pick along with him though. I’m not mad at the deal, I’m just disappointed that’s the best Spezza could fetch. I know Murray did his best.

    • PraiseAlfie11

Yes, and for the reason to win a cup. There is now no doubt in my mind the convo between him and BM basically ended with BM saying his hands are tied financially and that they would not be bringing in talent, but drafting and grooming.

  • Pasky

Good interview by him, let’s face it the fans and media pushed him out of town so nobody really has a right to be upset with him for wanting to leave, and considering how happy he sounds I think a giant weight was lifted off his shoulders.

Good Luck to Spezza, wish you well in the future unless your playing the Sens, and Thanks for the memories.

Because if you ask me, they are no better then players that should have a shot before them like Puempel, Prince, Hoffman, Scneider, Pageau…..We have way to much quantity and not enough quality.

        • sprucesens

rumoured to be more sens trades coming, so calm down, it might still be on route

          • Sensnation

Who’s on the block for us?

        • Pasky

Hoffman and Pageau are starting on this lineup as of right now, Puemple and Prince will be getting looks come injury call ups. We do need to reach the cap floor and playing nothing but rookies won’t do it. We already have 6 players on their entry level contracts not counting Lazar getting a look.

  • Spoons

    Capgeek are on the ball!

  • SuckitPhaneuf

Hey georges, would you rather go to toronto or the worst team in the league
    Not toronto

  • Brock

    Stastny to St. Louis.

    • Pasky

      4yr 7M per

      • Doc

Hahaha totally not worth that money.

        Suck it STL!!

    • sprucesens

      4 years 7 mill

      • Spoons

        WOW!

    • RUSH RLZ

Why we did not wait for that shoe to drop first I will never understand! We could have hard balled with the stonets in Colirado.

      • Sensnation

I’m sure Murray knew Stastny was going there and what his options were.

  • Moudy Mahfouz

Thursday Jan 29th. Spezza return to Ottawa. Cant wait

  • jtf927

stastny to blues. 7 mill/yr for 4 years. ouch!

    • Sensnation

It’s good St Louis didn’t give him a huge term, but damn!

      • Pasky

When can we expect a new avatar from you BTW lol

        • Sensnation

Lol, when I get over the fact he got traded. Give me time!

  • Pasky

    Cammalleri to NJ

    • Sandy

      5 yrs @ 5M?

  • sprucesens

missed out on cammy, he’s a devil

    • sprucesens

      5 years, 5 per

      • Doc

        I’m actually happy we did.

        • jtf927

same. small guy. can score, but gets moved off the puck.

    • RUSH RLZ

Glad we dodged that one, he’s a plug.

      • Pasky

Good player but 5 years is too long, 5 per is fair enough though

      • sprucesens

he’d be similar to macA, but smaller. same work ethic though, just not as good at using it because of his size

        • Sandy

          Murray wants big.

  • Millennium

    Erik Karlsson ‏@ErikKarlsson65 25s
Sad to see one of my best friend leave, I wish him all the best. One of the best teammates I’ve ever had. Good luck Spezz.

Wrong. Ryan next then King Karl.

        • Sensnation

Are you guys talking captains or people leaving?

      • Michenator

crap eh? I really hope Alfie comes back to the organization when our dreams come true and Melnyk sells the team.

  • Jakester

Good signing of Michalek more offensive upside than Pouliot.

    • Millennium

Milan “Not as overpayed as Pouliot” Michalek

    • ProfessorPower

so because Milo if better than Pouliot this is a good signing?….what

      • sprucesens

because we were going to sign pouliot in place of michalek most likely

        • ProfessorPower

the fact that it has to be one or the other is stupid in itself…BM has got to do something that will actually make this team successful. For far its Spezza Hemsky out, Chaisson in.

  • Brock

    Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Jussi Jokinen signs with Florida, 4 x 4

This is going to be a bad day.

    • Michenator

      relax… Hasn’t been bad yet!

      • Doc

Agreed. Seeing the contracts that are being given, I’m actually quite happy with our current situation.

        • Millennium

The only deal so far I would have matched or beaten was Erhoff and maybe Jokinen

          • Doc

True on Ehrhoff, but he wanted a cup.

      • Pasky

Agree, I’m waiting to see what other possible trade happens with the team.

    • Spoons

      we’re only 40 minutes in

      • esk

        and everyone is gone..lol

        • sprucesens

vanek, moulson, vrbata, probably lots more still

    • Sandy

The Sens are never going to sign the top UFAs. That’s a reality.

  • jtf927

    jussi jokinen signs in florida.

  • CUP 2014-15

    Boyle to Rangers

    • Sandy

But Eklund said he was going to the Leafs.

      • CUP 2014-15

lol, I’ll take Brooks over Eklund anyday

      • Brock

        It was a fake account.

        • The Apostle

a fake eklund account seems a little redundant

          • Sensnation

            Haha so true!

    • bluebuyyoo

Toronto. No Gorges. No Boyle. Hey! You still have Phaneuf!

  • jtf927

mason raymond signs with the flames. that would have been a forward i would have liked to sign.

    • Sensnation

When did he become a C? He’s been LW to my knowledge.

      • jtf927

        my bad. i realized a second later he’s a winger. :)

    • hq8

not sure if raymond’s played center in a long long time. Leafs were using him on W and same for VAN. would have still been a much more solid addition than MM9

  • hq8

sens should try for legwand – really really thin at centre all of a sudden I think. Turris the only with bonafide trustable experience. Zib with upside, but you never know when the coaching guys will screw with him again. Smith good at 3 or 4. Pageau – upside but nothing better than 3C.

going with Grant or Robinson won’t change much either – it will be an experiment.

    Lazar……..?

i think the one sure way this team gets better though is by shipping Greening, Neil and Phillips out NOW.

    • sprucesens

      if only

    • Michenator

      Smith’s a stud.

    • Pasky

Good guy move for this team, maybe a silver lining for the guys in the locker room

    • jtf927

classy guy. i am glad he is back. he wanted to stay here and play for the sens.

      • Nico

Agreed, he can definitely improve on his 39 pt campaign last year.

        • PraiseAlfie11

          With who feeding him? Zibby?

          • Doc

If things don’t change, I expect a second line of Michalek-Zibby-Chiasson.

          • Sensnation

            Where’s Stone going?

          • CUP 2014-15

I Think Stone will play with KT and CMac like they finished the yr. Zibby between Milo and Ryan, ZS with Chiasson and ?

          • Sensnation

Why wouldn’t Ryan go back to KT and CMac? He was only not with them because he was injured.

          • CUP 2014-15

Balance out the scoring maybe, but the day isn’t over

          • Sandy

He’s played with Zibby before and they had some chemistry. Both are fast.
I assume Chiasson slides on the other side. But I’m not too sure what kind of skater he is.

  • RUSH RLZ

    Bolland to Florida

  • http://www.Merchaholic.ca Merchaholic

Awesome, just like every free agency day we miss all the top players. I liked refreshing my twitter feed and seeing them go to our rivals though. Still a couple big names left, we’ll see.

guys – everyone around the sens getting better or staying better as before. not sure if we make the playoffs this year.

    • RUSH RLZ

We will finish 10th in the East. No playoffs, no good pick. Leafs-like mediocrity.

  • RUSH RLZ

Wow, Sens are pumping the 9MM signing like we just acquired Stamkos. Bad sign.

    • Nico

      @ 51 mil now!

    • Brock

So is every other team. I’ve seen the Pouliot signing more than anything so far.

      • Nico

Dodged that bullet! Milan is better.

    • EK65

With Spezza gone, we need some experience. Not a bad signing

  • Millennium

Damn, I was hoping Toronto would overpay Bolland. But he walks.

    • aegiszx

Toronto hasnt done anything yet today… Me thinks they’ll start to panic shortly and fix that by signing Brodeur to a 1 Yr 10M contract. LOL

  • jtf927

looks like nashville is going to miss out on getting a topline centre.

    • Brock

Should have waited and seen if they would have offered more for Spezza.

      • sprucesens

        spezza nixed it, not us

        • Sandy

I would assume with Stastny is St Louis, and Kesler in Anaheim that Dallas was the only other choice out there.

    • Pasky

Not really surprising if true. Any info of where or for who or if packaged with someone else.

      • Brock

The only way I see Wiercioch being moved is if we’re making room for Del Zotto.

        • Sensnation

Del Zotto is finally free to acquire, I’m not sure if Murray can resist.

  • John Q. Spartan

    Michalek, bad signing.

Unrelated but Florida has 12 players over 30…

Granted he goes back to the GM he won a Cup with (Tallon)… and gets reunited with Kopecky and Cambell.

    • EK65

Paul to Bingo for several years. Not sure if he’s projected to make the N for a while

      Michalek-Smith-Lazar
      Hoffman-Pageau-Neil/Condra

Same D that couldn’t get the puck out of their of their zone….

      • Sensnation

        But a year older! ;)

        • Wyzerd

That won’t help when the season starts…..just months from the memories/experience from last season.

          • Sensnation

Another offseason of young 20-24yr olds working out and adding muscle and learning their craft. I was joking at first, but it will indeed help them personally. There’s never any hope for fans.

          • Wyzerd

Much more likely to learn ones craft alongside an experienced player…

    • Sensnation

Not sure Lazar is staying at C in his first year.

      • CUP 2014-15

True, P.D. Said they like him on the right side

    • Mr Hockey

Can’t see Condra being a scratch but I don’t know who I’d take out either. Lazar can go back the the CHL but then you’d probably need to add Pageau. Someones going to be moved.

      • CUP 2014-15

Lazar cant go to the A

      • Harv

Lazar is too young for the AHL. He stays in the NHL or goes back to junior.

    • jtf927

that second line is actually not bad. will be hard on the puck. i am hoping we sign a veteran dman before this is all over.

      • John Q. Spartan

Michalek loses the puck if someone touches him …

  • RUSH RLZ

    Orpik to Caps.

  • karlssens

I swear.. I’ll be pissed if there’s no more moves for Ottawa..

    • Chaps

I’m sure there will. Garrioch said earlier to expect at least another trade. Brennan mentioned we’ll likely trade a D for an established forward. Personally, I think maybe another LW UFA and a trade for a centre. Have to remember that Murray said we wanted 4 forwards, one of which would need to be a C to replace Spezza. So far, we only got two – Chiasson and Michalek.

  • esk

People who are worried about our team without Spezza. We’ve been a much better 200 foot team with him out of the lineup over the past 2 seasons so don’t fret too much. We’re getting bigger and grittier with that trade.

    • Brock

Made the playoffs with pretty much the same team as we have now without him AND Karlsson.

      • PraiseAlfie11

With three goalies who were all playing lights out.

    • Spoons

      Chiasson’s -31 tells a different story

      • Michenator

Rookie year, lots to improve on obviously. BUT he brings size and a hard nose.

      • Pasky

-21 not -31, still not the greatest but he was a rookie in all fairness, with a subpar Dallas defence.

  • John Q. Spartan

Bolland 5 year at 5.5 … that’s just ridiculous. Every contact in the NHL looks good compared to that?

  • sprucesens

i bet spezza signs a new contract today too

      • Pasky

My cousin is ecstatic I can tell you that much.

  • Brock

    Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Ryan Miller is a Vancouver Canuck

To be honest, I didn’t really care that we were trading Spezza until now…just a little bit.

Their top 6 will look something like:

      Benn-Segin-Nichuskin
      Whitney-Spezza-Hemsky

      That’s just filthy.

      • aegiszx

Wow, so they have the young top line, the experienced second line, and then the energy third line that can score… Impressive!

        • Sandy

They are in the West. They have to try to keep up.

          • Doc

They are definitely contenders in the west now. They are one of the best young teams on the rise. Kind of like LA was 3-4 years ago.

If he can put a good season together he has a lot to gain by waiting, including choosing a destination if Dallas doesn’t blow him away throughout the year.

  • Moudy Mahfouz

Michalek over Hemsky. Has Hemsky scored more then 20 goals once?

    • aegiszx

Hemsky has also according to his words, never had a legit C… and well, now he does. And we saw what he could do.

      • Moudy Mahfouz

Good for them and I already liked Dallas with Benn and Seguin. Good luck to both.

    • Brock

He’ll score 40 with Spezza as his centre.

  • markukihokej

Hemsky 3 years, $4mil per to Dallas.

WE COULDNT OFFER THAT? Melnyk please, sell this team

    • esk

no i believe we offered more..he just wants to play for dallas, spezza.

    • Sensnation

We did offer something similar to that. He wanted to play with Spezza.

    • RUSH RLZ

No, we rightfully asked him to take a “Stanley Cup discount” to play for us.

    • aegiszx

As everyone else has already mentioned, he knew they were trying to trade Spezza. And he wanted to play with him. No chance he stayed in Ottawa if Spezza was gone. Also knew he had probably no chemistry with Zibby/Turris.

  • BeJamin

Roflmao same money for milo… And we give up spezza for a third line guy with mediocre possession numbers and two no name dime a dozen prospects. Brilliant. We look so shit right now. Disaster.

    • Doc

      Drama queen, aren’t you?

    • In the Bleachers

go cheer for the Leafs Eeyore – we won’t miss you

  • In the Bleachers

Don Brennan traded to the Dallas Morning Star for a used typewriter and an
    armadillo to be named later

  • Sandy

Spezza didn’t want to stay in Ottawa. Dallas appeared to be the only destination that was stepping up.
Hemsky wants to play in the playoffs. Didn’t want to stay.
    Get it now?

  • Millennium

I AM EXTREMELY DRUNK RIGHT NOW, SO WE BETTER TRADE GREENING SOON.

    • Sensnation

but Greening-Chiaisson will be our new dynamic duo

    • Nico

      *thumbs up*

  • Moudy Mahfouz

Sign Bobby already please. and Niskanen

    • jtf927

      this would be awesome.

      • Moudy Mahfouz

Well man twitter been talking about Ottawa being very active. Lets see very active and not average active

    • Nico

Doubt we’d go after Niskanen till we move some D out.

Actually, doubt we can afford Niskanen altogether, as good as he looks.

      • Sensnation

We shouldn’t WANT to overpay him.

    • Doc

Nah, Niskanen is overrated and will get his big pay day somewhere.

I want to sign Grabo. Do it Murray.

      • Moudy Mahfouz

grabo would look nice in Red

        • Doc

He would most definitely. He’s a possession wizard and would be a great fir in MacLean’s system.

          • Sandy

But I guess he’s still considering Wash.

          • Doc

Probably is, but he would be a cost effective player to get. Hopefully Murray is at least in contact with his agent.

  • Rafi Bomb

I wonder if Heatley signs with Dallas now. I figured that whatever team acquired Spezza would have the first right of refusal on players like Hemsky and Heatley. With Hemsky signed I guess Dallas likely has a good chance of signing Heatley if they so choose.

  • Millennium

    Don Brennan ‏@SunDoniB 5m
Spezza told Hemsky is joining him in Dallas. “Wow, that’s great to hear,” he said. #sens

*runs away crying like a 8 year old girl*

    • sprucesens

you know there is a $#!-eating grin on his face right now, running up and down the halls of his mansion

      • Nico
  • Sandy

Gionta to Buffalo. Too small for Ottawa.

    • jtf927

way too small. need to stay big and fast.

    • Wyzerd

seemed offensively ineffective in the play-offs

  • Harv

So, Spezza is going to be in Dallas for at least three years.

    • Sensnation

      What?

      • Brock

        Hemsky signed for 3 years.

        • Sensnation

          Ah 1 +1 = window

    • jtf927

he hasn’t agreed to an extension yet.

  • Pasky

Hey Chirp, what was the previous record in the comments section? Have we ever hit 2000 yet cause I think it’ll happen today

    • Millennium

Not at the record yet I don`t think. Alfie`s leaving was the record.

  • jtf927

jersey is buying out a-train. think this is an option we should explore?

    • Millennium

      no. period.

    • RUSH RLZ

      God no!

    • Sensnation

      Where have you been?

      • jtf927

lol. okay. obviously an unpopular suggestion. thought maybe he would be willing to sign a cheap short-term contract to be able to play hockey. never hurts to have a shot blocking and hard hitting dman. would not sign him for longer than a year at 1-1.5 mill max.

        • Sensnation

Haha, I guess, but Volchenkov is old, slow and half the reason people hated Spezza’s drop passes cause he always backed off them like a good defensive only defenseman.

    • markukihokej

      NO

    • Doc

      And may I ask why?

  • Mitchell

We still need to get to the floor, is bm looking for scraps?

    • Sensnation

Lehner gets us there. But BM said 4 forwards if Spezza is traded, so far we’ve got 2.

      • markukihokej

well for spezza we got 3 forwards, and then we signed Michalek

        • Sensnation

The other two aren’t even AHL from what I heard, don’t think they count.

          • markukihokej

            I hope so

  • In the Bleachers

    Montreal trades their CAPTAIN
    P K the new one ?

  • Sandy

I hate losing Spezza, but I wonder how his back will be after getting pounded by the big physical western teams. As a Sen throughout the season there weren’t as many games against the West.

    • sprucesens

other teams can hit too. its not like the east is just a bunch of soft players or something. i hate that people always assume this. Size is almost the same across the league. very rarely is there a team that is smaller. Players bounce from coast to coast every year. Yet the east is always seen as soft. This just isn’t the case. It’s just something that everyone likes to talk about, because its a widely accepted talking point, with little to nothing to really say that it’s a harder hitting conference

      • Sensnation

Agreed. And imo Boston is the toughest team in the league and we faced them plenty every year.

    • jtf927

absolutely. such a valid point you brought up. i wonder about both spezza and hemsky. the west is a much tougher conference physically.

  • Doc

    So 5 x 5,5 for Orpik? lol…

    • Millennium

So many bullets dodged today. We won`t need the cap to compete if teams keep throwing money at shitty players like this…

      • Doc

That contract is just retarded lol…

    • Moudy Mahfouz

      JOKES.

  • Sensnation

Murray said if he loses Spezza he’d need a C. Which C are we going after?

    • Doc

      Grabo!!

      • karlssens

Grabo + kuleman then trade Greening!

        • Doc

And call it a day. Boom.

          • karlssens

Would be a very happy sens fan.

          • Moudy Mahfouz

Sign Bobby and Mac and maybe some d and that’s the cherry on top

          • Doc

That, would be delicious as well!

          • Moudy Mahfouz

Def will treat me to some cake as well. Maybe some beer

          • Doc

Perfect day for it. About to rain too.

          • Moudy Mahfouz

Suck cause I am attending escapade tonight. Second guessing my decision

          • Doc

Your voice seems a bit a rough. Are you getting sick?

          • karlssens

Grabo and Kuleman would probably come to 7-8 mill for both. Bringing us to our self imposed cap.

      • Sensnation

Would be more than happy with that!

        • Doc

Not one to usually do this, but I’m in a good mood. Check this out:

          MacArthur-Turris-Ryan
          Michalek-Grabo-Chiasson
          Hoffman-Zibby-Stone

          Not too bad?

          • Brock

            Lazar.

          • Doc

True, but still not sure he’ll stick with the big club. That being said, I actually like that top 9.

          • Sensnation

            I like it!

          • In the Bleachers

            Not too bad at all

The Sens now have 3 players attending Canada’s WJC Summer Development Camp. Curtis Lazar, Ben Harpur & Nick Paul. #Sens

    #silverlinings

    • Sandy

So one of the ‘scraps’ that the Sens got for Spezza is good enough to go to Canada’s WJC Development Camp.

      • Millennium

As I said before “We trust our scouts on draft day, trust them today”

        • Sensnation

Good point, Bm obviously spoke to his scouts about these 2 “scraps”!

      • CUP 2014-15

        LOL, Well said

      • Sensnation

Veto the trade quick, he’s gotta be useless, fans know best ;)

      • In the Bleachers

        BOO YAH

      • spgottawa

A lot of very good players don’t get an invite – he would have to qualify as a very good prospect. It’ll be a couple years though. BM needs to add a decent player or two that can play this year.

  • Mitchell

I lost who said it but what about Weircoich? 4 forwards needed 2 LW complete but one Center and maybe depth but within the organization we have all this. So these will be trades or Ida to keep Bobby Ryan

  • CUP 2014-15

    Damn it, power out.

  • Moudy Mahfouz

If and I hope Murray signs Bobby to a long term deal at 6 million. I will have a smile on my face for the rest of the day, May even consider him as a captain eventually. Always positive and mature. DO IT SOON

    • Sandy

I think he signs at 7M.
That’s probably why Murray went for a young Chiasson and prospects. Needs to keep the salary increases for next year within the budget.

      • Moudy Mahfouz

Hope so anything. I am all for Turris, Ryan Mac leading this team

  • t_mac78

so Edmonton and Buffalo are now far better teams than Ottawa…:(

    • aegiszx

      No.

    • Millennium

Step back and look objectively. We’re not terrible. We’re just broke.

    • Sensnation

      How?

    • In the Bleachers

Who gives a rat’s ass about Edmonton ?

      • aegiszx

Do they even have a goalie?

    • Sandy

Edmonton has a lot of first overall picks.
Buffalo was over 20M under the floor. They had to overpay for someone.

  • Cicero

Michalek is missing from the Official Sens roster. http://senators.nhl.com/club/stats.htm?season=20132014

Expect an announcment? Was he signed to trade?

    • Michenator

he was a UFA so maybe they removed him this morning?

    • Sandy

Maybe someone’s out for lunch and will update it when the return. I don’t know.

    • Mr Hockey

It seems unlikely that the sens employee updating the website would be faster than the media in this.

      • Cicero

Why is it I can’t un-see Eugene hammering away at a laptop playing with the Official roster? :)

      • Sensnation

Sens employees are too busy following Senschirp today to work!

  • Sensnation

Hiller to Calgary is an interesting move. Good for both sides I think.

    • Sandy

      Is he truculent?

    • jtf927

good move for them. good goalie. thought he would sign with a playoff team.

  • Spoons

Come on Murray; Anderson to ANA, make it happen before he leaves us.

    • markukihokej

Lol, ANA doesnt need a goalie

  • Sensnation

$293 Million in signings so far today. Who’s jealous?

    • Sandy

Some of those contracts are insane. Too much money.

      • Sensnation

Agreed, good not chase all that silliness!

  • Sensnation

Vanek to Wild 3yr/6.5 per year

    • John Q. Spartan

We’ll see if they can play defense …

  • BigTrev42

well today is the day that it would either make or break this team and it looks like its break. its going to be a long time before ottawa is in the playoffs again

    • Sandy

You know that before they even get on the ice?
They are young yes. But with youth comes energy and willingness to learn.
They are not a contender for the playoffs next season, but in the near future you don’t know that.
Free Agency teams way overspend and regret that spending as seen by what happens today.

    • Sens-fan-in-mtl

disagree, pesky sens will be back in the playoffs this season

    • Wyzerd

This team is to young and inexperience to waste money in free agency. Better to save the dollars for when the team is a player away from being a contender. This team is still a few years away from their young talent playing to full potential.

What’s the book on Guptil and Paul. Sorry if someone’s already gone through this. Only get a few minutes to check at work.

What I really want to know: how far off are they from being NHL players and what are their ceilings?

    • Doc

Guptil is close to getting a look, Paul is a few years off.

      • Sandy

Guptil is in the NCAA Can’t remember the University. His coach is Red Berenson for those of you who may remember him

Good sign that Guptil is ahead of Puemple/Prince/Hoffman, although who the hell knows for another three years. Either way I wouldn’t call them a bust anytime soon.

        • Sensnation

Definitely not busts this early, and given how recently they were drafted I’m sure our scouting staff was interested in them.

  • SuckitPhaneuf

If we don’t extend Ryan, there’ll be an uproar from the fan base and probably 1000 less season tickets sold.

  • SuckitPhaneuf

I dont think melnynyk gets that if he wont spend money
    The fans wont either

    • RUSH RLZ

He MUST though and that is the most alarming thing of all. Just fucking sell it dude! Mark Cuban, Bob Jovi, Steve Ballmer, Weird Al, I really don’t give a fuck at this point.

    • Sensnation

I don’t think fans get that he’s not made of money and the new tv revenues haven’t kicked in.

      • SensDominate

The Sens woes are directly correlated to Melnyk’s lack of money. He’s leveraged the Sens so much that the amount of debt tied to the team is enormous now which carries a large debt-repayment schedule. Meaning, even if the Sens net out +$20 mil, on paper they still make no money. Thanks uncle Euge…

        • Sensnation

Was he responsible when we went bankrupt too? He’s in a small market, stop acting like the little brother who wishes he could have the same curfew as his older brother.

          • Aaron 2.0

I don’t know if anyone has this information 100%, by it certainly has been suggested by more than a few that the big economic problem in Ottawa is mainly related to the team’s financing (very, very high interest rates). Sure, Ottawa is a small market compared to the big boys, but not tiny by league-wide comparisons. If true, I guess you could take it as a good or bad thing. Bad, in that the financing is a problem, and not sure how you fix it, unless you find better lenders. Worse, if the team is leveraged for other enterprises. And, finally, good, in that the issue might not actually be the Ottawa market. In other words, the long-term sustainability for a team in Ottawa may not be a problem at all!

          • SensDominate

I don’t think anyone thinks that Ottawa isn’t a strong NHL market. The problem is (as you mentioned), that Melnyk is using the Sens to finance other ventures. That’s fine for any other business…but not cool to do to a hockey team that legions of fans follow and that represents the city of Ottawa.

          • Sandy

I wonder what the league thinks if he is using the Sens as collateral for loans on his bad ventures.
I’m sure they aren’t too happy about that.

          • SensDominate

In fact when the Melnyk’s bought the Sens he kept much of the debt on the team. Back then it was purely for tax purposes. However since he has lost 100s of millions from biovale, lost 10s of millions from his start-up that didn’t take off and got divorced which cost him many more million. The debt that is leveraged on the Sens is no longer just about a tax write-off – it’s been accumulated to fund his other ventures. The Sens don’t lose money, plain and simple when the debt servicing is not part of the equation – they make a bunch. But with the debt-load, the lose. This isn’t new news.

  • Pasky

If Ryan walks, Karlsson won’t be far behind. It’s a good thing Melnyk can hide in Barbados.

Ottawa and Buffalo talking trade as per Chirp retweet

    • Sensnation

      Stewart finally coming to Ottawa?

      • Pasky

        Cost per point……. *rolls eyes*

  • Sensnation

    Iginla to Colorado, wow!

    • Pasky

Good pickup for them, they still won’t go far without fixing that back end though

      • Sensnation

Agreed. Last year was a lot of emotion driven results imo. Don’t expect them to repeat that.

  • Moudy Mahfouz

    ……

  • MikeS

This forum is feeling like last July 1. However it changed pretty quick after the Ryan trade….. I just hope Murray has something up his sleeve again!

    • Pasky

After Chirps remarks it needs to be Ryan again, extension this time.

    • RUSH RLZ

They need to change free agency to a different date so Melnyk stops ruining our Canada Days..

      • MikeS

        I agree!

  • Samsquanch

what a terrible trade for spezza. We get a guy who’s -21 and only 1 season under his belt + 2 other Nhl noobs???

    • Sandy

So Spezza as an experienced #1 centre was -25.

      Chiasson is a rookie.
FFS. This site is becoming a bummer.
      Chirp, need good news.

      • Doc

Not a rookie per se, but new to the NHL somewhat. He will 24 in October.

    • SuckitPhaneuf

      Hi troll

    • Wyzerd

Only a bad trade if you are looking for instant gratification.. Plenty of potential/upside for the future of the team.

  • Doc

    COST-PER-POINT! COST-PER-POINT! COST-PER-POINT!

  • karlssens

    Kuleman and grabo still available..

  • Moudy Mahfouz

  • jimmyjohnson

I’m not reading through 1000 ppsts to find out if I’m the first to bring this up lol

Has anyone else noticed that Alex Guptill was taken exactly one pick after Jakub Culek? Feels like a do-over.

    • Pasky

That wasn’t brought up, but it was mentioned that Chiasson was also picked 1 spot ahead of Silfverberg

      • jimmyjohnson

Interesting. It’s funny how I was just looking at that and completely missed the connection lol

        Alcohol is a … thing… I think… I don’t know anymore.

Why the hell did we sign Michalek!!!

        F***!

  • Cicero

Once the momentum winds down from the trade, the Spezza Fiasco will be officially over. We can start looking at the value we have gained in return.

We have a good, young team that just got younger and — considering we were a year from losing Spezza for nothing — better.

Next season, expectations will be much lower, fans will get to see some highly touted prospect emerge into NHL-level talent, possibly earning roster spots.

    MacArthur – Turris – Ryan
Whether we like it or not (we deserve it, it seems) is our #1 line. We should see Chiasson move up on occasion as well. This solid 200′ line will continue to grow. By the end of next season, we can expect there to be no further doubt about them as a legit #1 line in the NHL.

    Michalek- Zibanejad – Chiasson.
This is a line that might post some surprising numbers. All three forwards are big and enjoy getting into the gritty areas. Some are put-off by the Michalek signing, but with the prospects coming in from the Spezza trade, and 9MM coming off his 2nd best year as a Sen, we get the most by re-signing him.

    Hoffman – Lazar – Stone.
I am putting small money on this as our 3rd line after training camp, knowing full well that players and Smith, Greening, Pageau, Condra, Neil plus newcomer Puempel will all be battling for 3rd line minutes (Paul and Guptill, acquired with Chiasson, are both Bingo bound for development).

    • Wyzerd

Well said, but what about the D

      • Cicero

        I dare not! Thanks though. I can’t help but think there’s a D-for-D trade coming soon…..

    • CUP 2014-15

I like it a lot but drop ZS in place of Lazar. P.D, has said flat out that the team sees him on the right side.

      • Cicero

I thought Lazar was always going into the C slot. RW is great though, as he might rise through the ranks quickly.

        • CUP 2014-15

I think he would be a great C but we do have KT and BM said he felt KT was one of the best 2nd line C’s in the league and that Zibby was going to become a legit number one. That along with what PD said lets us know this guy needs to be RW. Can’t wait to see him in a Sens uni.

  • SensChirp

Derek Roy an interesting (local) name that remains on the market.

    • Doc

      Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

    • Mitchell

3rd line Center as long as term and dollars is low

      • Pasky

Wouldn’t be a bad pickup if the money is right, but it seems we still have too many bodies for another forward unless we pull off a trade.

  • Sensnation

Stralman to Tampa? Maybe some more dominoes can fall now.

    5yr 20mil total

    • Pasky

Curious as to what happens to Niskanin

      • Sensnation

He’s holding up a lot supposedly. Too many options.

  • Brad Bernatchez

I’m really hoping we sign Richards to fill our C hole. I doubt it because melnyk sits on his wallet and let’s players walk like it going out of style

    • Doc

      Mike or Brad?

      Either way I disapprove.

      • Brad Bernatchez

        Brad :(

      • Brad Bernatchez

        Better then dramatic Grabo

        • Doc

          Really? I strongly disagree.

Grabo would be a perfect fit for our system. Brad is barely a second line center anymore, and would probably cost more.

          • Brad Bernatchez

Hopefully that drops his value for our low budget team

          • Aaron 2.0

Agree, thing Grabo would be a good fit, and a realistic option too.

          • Brad Bernatchez

Your right it is realistic. That’s my problem with this team or management they are to cheap to go after that top end player and it’s getting frustrating watching our top players walk away for literally nothing. If the sens don’t sign a big name at attendance will drop

          • PalladiumDrive

            Grabo = Kovalev 2.0

          • Doc

            Umm…ok?

  • Terry

    Sign Ryan

    • Sensnation

Relax. Today’s the first day he even can and Spezza/UFAs are the priority. Ryan extension could be a while.

      • Pasky

As long as it’s before training camp, but I won’t it’s soon enough just to stop the negativity in the comments. Makes for a long summer.

      • Terry

Getting Ryan locked up long term may entice UFAs?

        • Sensnation

The UFA’s he’d entice we’re not going after or getting.

  • Dirtysweetness

I thought Ottawa was supposed to be busy today? According to local media…

    • Sensnation

Biggest trade of the day, no?

      • MikeS

They were supposed to be busy after that….

        • Sensnation

I thought free agency started today, not ended today. Plenty of time still.

          • Dirtysweetness

            Who’s left tho?

          • MikeS

Im not saying its over. Last year at around this time we signed McArthur and around 430 traded for ryan

      • Jakester

  • Kielbasa

I’m starting to think this organization likes all those empty seats at the CTC.

  • Jakester

Q4Q trade coming- wouldn’t be surprised Sens snag another forward. So far so good.

    • Doc

I call a trade between Nashville and Ottawa for a forward.

      • Jakester

        Forsberg?

  • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Not surprised to see hemsky ho to Dallas

  • Zachpraisetheswedes

I honestly think its time to move on from Murray. It’s starting to become the norm to be disappointed with the big days in then ho for moves. He never does enough. I know Melnyk has a lot to do with it but Murray could still do more with what he has

    • Sensnation

Never? Where have you been? Ah fans and their right to an “opinion”.

    • Brock

Murray has one of the hardest jobs in the NHL. I think he is doing a fantastic job with what he has. Bring in another GM and he doesn’t improve the team half as much as Murray has over the past couple of years.

    • Wyzerd

You might want to put a bit of thought to what your are saying. Every bit of top-end talent on this team Murray has either drafted, traded for, or signed as a FA. And the cupboard is full of NHL caliber prospects. Definitely one of the best GMs in the league.

  • Sandy

It wasn’t that long ago that many were saying ,other than Stastny, it was a weak UFA.
Now everyone’s complaining that the Sens didn’t sign any of these players. I don’t get it.

    • Doc

I think most were also expecting a trade. The day’s not over yet, so I’m keeping faith.

    • MikeS

There isnt any superstar FA this year, however there is alot who are better than 80% of ottawa’s players

      • Sandy

8% of the Ottawa players are under 25 yrs old and haven’t reached their potential.

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

      Agreed Sandy… Very confused.

I’m not a huge fan of the Michalek deal, but it’s at the high end of where I said I’d be ok with

    • Aaron 2.0

I think the market actually got a little better than expected with the buyouts and whatnot. But, for sure, our supposed target just got a really good contract out west. Even without a budget, I’d pass on that contract. And, then you have the other end. Hemsky’s contract by comparison looks pretty nice for Dallas, IMO. And, then you also need to convince players to come here. A team just doesn’t necessarily get whatever they want in unrestricted free agency.

Really, I think I’m most confused by the back-end right now.

      • CUP 2014-15

One thing to keep in mind with Hemsky deal is with the no State tax in texas, he would need to sign for about 5.5 per to take home the same here.

        • MikeS

Im not sure why the league hasnt done something to adress that. Basically dallas has an effective cap of 100+mil in comparison to ottawa

        • Aaron 2.0

Ah, good point. I wonder how many players actually think about things like this. I’m sure there’s a few smart ones out there that do. I guess that’s why their are agents though.

          • CUP 2014-15

I am sure that the agents are not to quick to point it out either as they are paid on 2-3% of earnings so 5.5 looks better to them then 4,lol, greeeeeeeed

          • Aaron 2.0

LOL. Maybe more should just pull a Phillips.

          • Sandy

That is exactly what today is all about. Greed.
I’m really surprised the Flyers haven’t blown their brains out today. But then again, they are in cap trouble because they blew their brains out last July 1st.

          • Harv

They may not. But, their accountants sure do.

  • AutoTurris

Been following, haven’t posted, been in the midst of a cross-Ontario pilgrimage.

I’m usually optimistic but I must say I’m disappointed with today. The Spezza trade I am happy with but our UFA luck seemed to leave with Pouliot. I really don’t know what to think.

I must add however that I am reading The Fault In Our Stars, as per my girlfriend’s request, and even that book is less depressing than this message board.

    • CUP 2014-15

LOL, Pouliot went for way too much so BM resigns Milo and it’s only 2:45 so lots of time left Auto. Keep trucking pal.

  • Zachpraisetheswedes

I’ve always hated the trades where a superstar is traded for numerous “lesser” assets instead of a 1 for 1 trade similar to the St. Louis for Callahan deal

    • Sandy

Anaheim got Kesler. St Louis got Stastny.
      Spezza wouldn’t go to Nashville.
Where else was Spezza going to go.
A lot of us wanted Chiasson. I would have liked Ritchie to come back. But I trust what the scouts saw in these young players.

The 2nd rounder next year should be a good pick unless it is used in a trade.

      • PalladiumDrive

I’ll say this much – Chiasson > Bonino. IMO.

  • Sandy

It’s not even 3 hours into free agency FFS.
Yes we lost Spezza. Got back a big young gritty winger that ‘projects’ to a 2nd liner and got two big gritty and reportedly skillful young players.
    We re-sign Michalek.

    • PalladiumDrive

We also got a 2nd round pick in a DEEP draft.

      • Doc

I’m actually excited that we got a pick in 2015 too.

        • Sandy

If the Sens aren’t done and trades are expected, that 2nd round pick could be in play in a trade.

Why do I have a feeling the Sens are targeting Evander Kane?

          • Doc

            Sorcery?

          • PalladiumDrive

that would make the day brighter.

          • Zachpraisetheswedes

Yes please! That would make our team competitive. Otherwise were definitely not making the playoffs.

Our teams 2nd line just became our 1st and our 3rd became our 2nd and so on and so on

          • Sensnation

If he could pull that off, like he did Ryan last year, a lot of fans would change their tune.

          • Sandy

He has to do something or season ticket holders are going to start cancelling, especially if Ryan doesn’t stay.

          • PalladiumDrive

Ryan stays if Sens get McDavid next year. He signs extension about 5 minutes after lottery.

          • Sandy

He’ll be gone from Ottawa if he doesn’t sign before then.

          • Sensnation

            Haha, so true!

          • Jakester

THat was what I was alluding to earlier , I have the same feeling. Something like Cowen,Hoffman,Stone and Anderson for Kane and Pavelec

          • PalladiumDrive

Stone AND Hoffman?? Whoa. bit much. It’s not Patrick Kane. It’s Evander. :)

  • Keregan

Thank god we didn’t sign Pouliot i much much prefer keeping Michalek

    • PalladiumDrive

      Really?

      • Doc

        Considering the contracts? Yes.

        • PalladiumDrive

who cares? it’s not like the cap is going be an issue! :(

          • Sensnation

            Budget still is.

          • Doc

So you would be willing to give Pouliot 5 years?

          • PalladiumDrive

His corsi is very good. I think he fits well with what Senators are trying to do. 5 years is probably too much term. I don’t disagree.

          • Doc

I agree that his advance stats are good, but it’s still a gamble to give him 5 years.

          • Keregan

yeah five year for a guy who career high is 36 pts no thank. Even if he has a good corsi my guess is that the guy is only capable against weak competition like 4th 3rd liner at best

      • Keregan

yeah really Pouliot would have been a waste especially for the same money.A wounded Micalek is still way better than Benoit freaking Pouliot

    • spgottawa

      Agree!

  • Sensnation

This is a list of Sens GMs:
    Bryan Murray
    John Muckler
    Marshall Johnston
    Rick Dudley
    Pierre Gauthier
    Randy Sexton
    Mel Brigman

This is a list of good Sens GMs:
    Bryan Murray
    Pierre Gauthier

Get off Murray’s back, he’s doing the best he can!

    • PalladiumDrive

Didn’t Marshall Johnston pull off the Yashin deal for Spez and Chara? I’d put him in the good list just for that!

      • spgottawa

        Yes he did!

      • Sensnation

That’s pretty much all he did, yes.

      • PalladiumDrive

I think he drafted Havlat, Fisher and Vermette too. But I could be mistaken.

        • Sensnation

He drafted 1-2 2nd or 3rd line player a year. Not many home runs, but overall not terrible. There are good arguments for including him on the good list.

    • spgottawa

Muckler benefited from some of the moves that Johnston made and then screwed a couple things up big time. Particularly messed up the whole Hossa-Heatley, Redden-Chara situation. He did hire Bryan Murray though….

      • PalladiumDrive

I give him a pass on Hossa-Heatley. At the time, I loved the move. Redden-Chara was a colossal F up.

        • Sandy

Don’t forget he sucked at drafting and raided Binghamton for 4th line players.

          • PalladiumDrive

            Bondra. That is all.

          • Sandy

Scored in his first game and did he ever get another one? Was a bust in the playoffs.

          • PalladiumDrive

may even have been his first shift. and i don’t think he ever potted another goal in Sens uni.

        • spgottawa

Chara left because Muckler screwed his buddy Hossa. I think they live on the same street in the off season.

  • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

What a stupid mindset. If you don’t blow your wad on July 1st you’re fucked!

      • spgottawa

        Maybe he meant another year?

      • Sandy

I don’t think that is the case.

    • Sensnation

It’s after Joe Thornton retires, cause he won’t waive his NTC.

  • Mr Hockey

I think a trade will happen to free up some roster spots, but it doesn’t need to happen just because it’s July 1st. A trade can happen a month from now and there’s no difference from the Sens perspective.

Same goes for the B Ryan signing. As a fan I’d love for a signing to happen today. But if it’s two weeks from now? Who cares as long as it happens. Fans need a bit of patience.

    • spgottawa

      By Friday would be nice…

    • RUSH RLZ

Actually… the season ticket drive already started and the longer this situation remains festering in status quo then the more damage the bank account takes…

      • spgottawa

Season Ticket drive started 3 months ago….

        • RUSH RLZ

Exactly. And tomorrow should be the big day-after-free-agency whoooosh of excitement and opportunity that the marketing team capitalizes for a big push.

Whadda we got now? Well we lost another superstar Captain and Hemsky for prospects but hey! We re-signed 9MM!

Remember we are coming off a season where we already struggled with ticket sales thanks to penny pinching and the departure of Alfie.

edited to say I love 9MM by the way, but obviously that was not an Earth shattering move for us.

      • Mr Hockey

Definitely true. Just saying that the roster isn’t set in stone as of tomorrow.

  • Brock

    Ken Warren @Citizenkwarren
Hemsky says he had talked to Spezza in the last couple of weeks, wanting to know what Spezza’s options were

    • Keregan

Dallas got themselves a scary top 6

      • PalladiumDrive

i’m not sure Hemsky and Spezza can stay healthy.

    • Shibal

Maybe Hemsky was already planning on signing with Dallas before the draft – influencing Spezza’s decision of not accepting the Nashville trade.

  • Doc

Stralman would have been a good pickup.

  • Pasky

If we still look at signing a center I’d take a run at Daniel Winnik if he doesn’t command an arm and a leg.

    • spgottawa

      Can Legwand still play?

      • Pasky

Not very effectively, I’d rather give Pageau a shot than Legwand TBH

  • Kumar

Only way Ottawa going to add player or two is by trading assets. Bryan is not going to keep players in roster. The beast way for an upgrade would be trade with Flyers. I believe we can move Greening for LeCavalier straight up.
Or trade Greening for Tyler Ennis

    • Sandy

Tyler Ennis. 5ft 9 Tyler Ennis.
      Doesn’t fit the size chart.

    • PalladiumDrive

Trade Greening to the Phoenix Suns! :)

  • Sandy

So what’s missing from last year’s team?
Kassian, Hemsky & Spezza? Can you even count Hemsky because he was here for less than 2 months.
Spezza, offensively, is a huge loss and his points, as of yet, haven’t and won’t be replaced.

    • spgottawa

Made the playoffs 2 years ago without Spezza(injured).

      • Sandy

        You are right.
So why is everyone f’in complaining and gripping on here today.

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Because they aren’t taking a second to look at the deal and realize it’s a good return all things considered

          • sprucesens

yeah, remember the 2nd round pick is likely to be a very good player too, similar in value to chiasson

          • Sensnation

I completely agree with this. Destroyed more than most that Spezza is gone and could not fetch more, but given the market this was a good deal!

        • Hax

          Because it’s the internet.

      • PalladiumDrive

We had Alfie. We had Gonchar stabilizing the back end. We had ridiculous goaltending. We had a shortened season.

        Don’t expect the same.

  • KJ

It’s only 3pm. I am sad that Switzerland lost today, but happy Roanic won this morning. I could be happier though … I know, while I am waiting for the shifting FA sands to settle and stupid money to clear, I’ll grab a scotch on the rocks, and hope we sign Someone for decent term and money. I have a feeling we will need to trade to meet the remaining forward needs. Maybe the Jays will win on Canada day? Good day for sporting events.

  • AutoTurris

We have a first line. We have a third line, with variants essentially being centered around Zib, Stone, Chaisson and Lazar. We need to build a second line. MM9 is a start, albeit a slow one, but we are one decent 2C away from not being the new Sabres. A winger wouldn’t hurt either. I have faith.

    • Shibal

All the good wingers are off the table now.

      • CUP 2014-15

        Trade

    • SensDominate

The 2nd line is pretty set with Milo-ZBad-Stoner. 3rd line looks to be shaping up as Hoff-Lazar-Chaisson…that one will be a work in progress

      • Brock

        Switch Chiasson and Stone.

  • PalladiumDrive

    As of now:
    Line 1: Ryan/Turris/Mac
    Line 2: 9MM/Zibby/Stone
    Line 3: Hoffman/Lazar/Chiasson
    Line 4: Greening/Smith/Neil

    Condra, Pageau

Pair ‘em anyway you want, this is a gong show:
    D1: Karlsson/Methot
    D2: Ceci/Weircoch
    D3: Phillips/Cowen

    Boro/Gryba/Claesson

    G1: Anderson
    G2: Lehner

    • hq8

i would make phillips and Cowen 7th D before making Gryba 7th D. unless ofcourse the sens are also failing at learning from coaching mistakes.

      • PalladiumDrive

like i said, pair em anyway you want. it’s a disaster.

    • Ryan

we were so horrible defensively last year but we competed offensively yet for some reason we just keep wanting to add more forwards? what is BM thinking, this team needs better defines!!

so finally with spezza leaving, all the good from the 2007 core is now gone. the crap, i.e. phillips and neil is still here. a sign of how things have gone under BM’s tutelage.

sens fans should be frank, BM is just as crap as a GM as EM is as an owner.

    • Doc

      Lol. Cute.

      • Wyzerd

        Like someone puking on themselves…

    • Andrews theory

      Get your resume ready lol

    • Mr Hockey

Turris deal was amazing, his contract even better. Anderson was great (somewhat ruined our chances on Landeskog but still solid). I actually think the Heatley deal was good considering the circumstances. No gm is perfect. I don’t think he’s been great but crap is a long shot.

      • SensDominate

Heatly was Muckler….aside from bring a screw job to Hossa it was the only thing Muckler ever did that wasn’t a disaster (at least not immediately anyways)

        • Mr Hockey

Sorry I meant the Heatley trade (which was murray).

    • spgottawa

Most of the Presidents Cup winning team core is gone too…. C’mon man 7 years ago, will be eight at the end of this season….

    • CUP 2014-15

      LOL

  • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Regin resigned in Chicago… Good for him!

  • spgottawa

Players I would not be shocked to see traded before the end of July if BM can pull off a deal for a top 6 forward or top 4 D.
    Anderson
Anyone on D except Karlsson or Ceci. Preferably a quantity for quality deal.
Any one or two of Greening, Condra, Smith, Pageau. Maybe Stone, Hoffman if the return is good enough.
    Any combo of the above…

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

So we may trade the whole team or we may not?

      • spgottawa

Ha. Don’t be surprised to see a trade I guess is what I’m saying…

I didn’t bother going to him or Peumple who both play a hardnose in your face style.

  • PalladiumDrive

Who do you want to see Murray sign based on forwards available?
Penner; Morrow; Ott; Brian Boyle; Ribeiro; Roy; Grabo; Other_________

    • MikeS

Grabo is the only one im interested in. Didnt he say at the draft that we need 4 forwards though?

    • CUP 2014-15

      Boyle

    • Wyzerd

A solid stay at home Dman that can clear the front of the net, or just can just one that can clear the puck out of the zone on the first try…

      • PalladiumDrive

Lots of UFA D men still available that could help us:
Willie Mitchell; Francis Bouillon, Douglas Murray, Matt Niskanen (will be too much $),

heck – would you bring back the A-Train? Bet he’d be better than Cowen, Phillips or Gryba.

        • Wyzerd

          Someone younger…

        • Brutus5247

Look at his recent #’s he’s not.

          • PalladiumDrive

A-Train: +3, led Devils with 129 hits. Second on Devils with 91 blocked shots. He’s 32. I’d take him over Phillips, Gryba or Cowen in a heartbeat. At least the Cowen we saw last season.

          • Sensnation

2nd half Cowen was much better. Still too young to be acting like that’s his ceiling. Give him time!

      Vrbata

    • Andrews theory

Grabo all the way, he’s highly underrated

  • HamadBo$$

what a shitty deal for Spezza!!! Chiasson is decent probably a 40 point player at best and the other two are nobodies. Guptill is just another stupid college player..how many of those have turned out for us?! Then you have Nicholas paul who had 46 points at age 19 in the OHL…. A 4th liner if we are lucky. This has to be the worst trade I have ever seen in my life. If we couldn’t have gotten anything better then we should’ve kept Spezza and traded him at the deadline. Besides we got so many fucking prospects we don’t need more!! We need someone who can make an NHL impact. Fuck this sens are done for

    • Shibal

You can’t really say that Chiasson is a 40 point player at best , when he has already scored 35 points in his rookie season.

      • spgottawa

And Chiasson is only 23… Paul has been invited to WJC Camp..

    • Doc

      What were you expecting?

      • HamadBo$$

        At least a top 6 forward…

        • Shibal

Chiasson was Dallas’s top 6 forward last season. He had one more point than Nichushkin in point scoring totals – of course Nichushkin will be the better player in the longterm.

        • Sandy

You mean like Seguin, Benn, Nichuskin.
It was just a few days ago people on here were saying if it’s Dallas I hope it’s Chiasson.
Well Chiasson it is but now he’s not good enough.
We don’t know who these young players are as we haven’t heard their names before… therefore they are crap. Right?
God, this site is so fucking depressing today.
It’s worse that Alfie last year.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I am actually floored at the reaction, I guess it’s because most fans really only pay attention to the Sens.. Really all four pieces mean nothing to the average fan

          • PalladiumDrive

It’s depressing. But it ain’t close to Alfie last year!

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

We should have traded Spezza for Malkin, Crosby, Ovechkin, Patrick Kane and Jonathon Quick.

      • Sensnation

        That’s not enough! ;)

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

What if we get Gretzky q youth elixir and he agrees to come with Messier?

    • Andrews theory

Chiasson will get more than 40 points, if not this year then the following year,I’ll put money on that.

As for the prospects, a smart GM staggers his prospects so he has a steady stream of talent instead of having all of his prospects ready for NHL duty at the same time.

For everyone shitting on the deal, the dominos had to fall and the market dictated the outcome.

Sens will have a great shot at an impact player in the draft next year and with two seconds they could likely flip those into an additional first.

      • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

        Nailed it

  • Kielbasa

So. Be honest. Can people look at our current roster and honestly believe that this team is better than we were last year?

We lost two unbelievably talented franchise players today and have not brought in pieces to push this team in the forward direction in which we can push for a playoff spot. I don’t know what to make of the direction Murray and his group are going are taking things in.

    • spgottawa

Two franchise players? Are you kidding?
Oh, you read the Ludwig vs Erik name wrong….

      • CUP 2014-15

        lol

    • Aaron 2.0

Honestly no. But, I’m not sure it’s as bad as people are saying either. Hemsky was only added at the end. He played lights out w/ Spezza for sure. But, he was only a ‘rental’. And, most of the season fans said keep Spezza out of the lineup; he’s a liability. I’m not necessarily agreeing with it. But, really, things haven’t changed all that much. We’ve lost one player, that a lot of fans wanted gone. And, we picked up a good young player from Dallas (+ a few other prospects) that will hopefully pan out.

The issue of only spending about to the cap floor in a Canadian market is probably pretty despicable, if the Sens are done. But, that didn’t happen overnight (i.e. I don’t blame what happened today on that).

    • KJ

      Patience

    • Sandy

Two players? Spezza yes. Hemsky was here for 6 fucking weeks. His highest goal total in his NHL career was 23 goals.
Not denying he and Spezza have some chemisty and he may get more than 23 goals if he plays the entire season.

      • PalladiumDrive

If either play an entire season!

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Who is the second franchise player we lost today… You do realize it wasn’t Erik Karlsson right?

    • Harv

Uh, we didn’t lose Karlson. We lost Karlson.

  • BigTrev42

Hey Chirp! Anything new yet? lol

    • mr.slapshot

He’s been pretty quiet for a while now. Shock?

Bryan Murray will speak at 4:30.

    • mr.slapshot
    • Doc

      Maybe Ryan extension? Teehee…

    • bluebuyyoo

I wish he would speak the truth:
Fuck! I should have moved Spezza last year.
      Bastard Hemsky!
Eugene is passed out and is unable to green light anything

    • RUSH RLZ

Good tactic, speak when everyone is distracted by the USA World Cup match!

  • Moudy Mahfouz

    Brutal if Murray is done

    • KJ

If he is done in FA, he is certainly not done by any means

  • HamadBo$$

Melnyk’s miser policy is going to bite him in the ass. Next year Ottawa is going to be a lottery team with more and more empty seats. Who can blame the fans when your team has only one legit superstar in Erik karlsson (possibly turris). Ryan will probably not resign and leave in the free agency, I mean who wants to play in Ottawa. If bolland can get 5.5m then Ryan can get more and thats whats probably going through his mind

    • spgottawa

Chill. Ryan is worth more than 5.5 and BM knows that…

      • MikeS

        Does Melnyk though?

        • laffin681021

Melnyk probably thinks Crosby is worth no more than 6 million. cheap drunk bastard.

      • Lucretia

Sometimes it’s not about money. I don’t think Melnyk is an owner players are falling all over themselves to play for. This “the money is going to be there” schtick is getting old and obviously players aren’t falling for it anymore.

    • SensDominate

If Ryan isn’t resigned before the season starts he will be traded. No way he walks for nothing. Murray will offer 7mil/season with decent term. The question won’t be money for his contract not being available. He may have a similar question as Alfie and Spezza had though on whether there will be money available to make the team better. We know what happened with those guys…hopefully history doesn’t repeat with Ryan…

    • PalladiumDrive

Melnyk is going to have to spend some dough next year to reach the floor. He has some RFAs to sign, but not sure it will be enough.

  • ProfessorPower

Any news on these other trades that are supposedly suppose to happen?

    • spgottawa

They don’t have to happen today….

      • ProfessorPower

I assumed he would want to make a trade soon to distract us from his other shenanigans….I dont want to wait all summer lol

  • PalladiumDrive

If you’re a UFA and you received an from the Ottawa Senators, given the owner, wouldn’t you wait to see what else is being offered to you and quite possibly take a bit less to play somewhere else?

I don’t think players want to come here. I think maybe only Edmonton and Winnipeg rank lower for most.

    • spgottawa

I’m sure 9MM had other offers.

      • PalladiumDrive

different in that he’s already here.

        • CUP 2014-15

          CMac

          • MikeS

Last year alot of people werent too happy with CMac signing

          • CUP 2014-15

Today a lot of people are not happy with the trade. I have full faith in the scouts and BM

          • PalladiumDrive

Scouts, GM – they are NOT the problem. The problem is our owner.

          • laffin681021

I’m with you. Believe our staff and have a little faith. Worst comes to worse…we get McDavid or Eichel!

    • ProfessorPower

The FA pool is pretty shitty, if we wan’t high end players we have to trade for them. That way they don’t have a choice:)

    • Andrews theory

Really depends on what you are looking to do with the contract.

Some guys will look at the depth chart in Ottawa and think, hey I have a great shot at playing some big minutes on a team with some great young talent

Guys looking to hit the reset button have a great shot here

  • Doc

We currently sit at 50 271 667 according to capgeek.

    • ProfessorPower

so we have about 6 mil to spend to reach our internal budget correct? some of that goes to Lehner

      • PalladiumDrive

Did Melnyk say 56 or 53? Not sure why he would SAY anything! Dumbass!

        • ProfessorPower

I think it was Garrioch who said the budget number…I’m pretty sure it was 56-57

      • spgottawa

Yes, still potential for a UFA but I am guessing that there are some trades to be made where we may take back more in salary than we give up.

        • ProfessorPower

I agree, right now if we are signing someone it will be a depth player who is extremely cheap. A trade would make the most sense for us now to solidify our top 6 or top 4 d.

    • spgottawa

It’s salary you need to look at not cap wrt the budget. The floor is not an issue as Lehner still isn’t signed.

      • Doc

        That’s actual salaries.

  • Kumar

Our current cap stands at $50.3M with 22 players under contract. We still have to ink Lehner. OF the 22 players, four guys (Ceci, Hoffman, Pageau and Stone) have two way contracts. It is save to say Stone, Hoffman and may be Ceci retained in NHL. We have 8 Ds under contract, unless we are moving a player or two, Ceci might end up in AHL. Similar fate to Pageau too.

Our depth in center is weak, but by signing some veteran Wingers will help.

    • Mr Hockey

In my opionion we trade Greening and a D. (Cant see Greening having huge value and I have no idea which D they’d trade) Pretty certain Ceci plays with the big team so something has to happen. Pageau at C makes sense too.

      • CUP 2014-15

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Thought I saw it somewhere.. Can’t find anything about it now though

  • Sandy

Chicago is over the cap. They have to do something in way of a trade for money out, less in.
So is Philly. They have to dump salary as well.

    • Andrews theory

I’d take Oduya off their hands for an interim fix

    • KJ

Maybe he announces some trades at 4:30? Richards? Anyone’s guess.

      • Magnus Nor

        Where can i watch it?

    • CUP 2014-15

Take a look at the Rangers, who they have left to sign and their dollars spent, they are in need of a salary dump as well.

    • spgottawa

Philly is over and is still short a goalie and a forward!

  • laffin681021

    Off topic but…LETS GO USA!!!!

  • Moudy Mahfouz

Lets go Belgium I think Murray is done for the day. On to soccer

  • karlssens

They must honestly want to stack up in this draft then complete the rebuild.. Definite bottom 5 team.

    • Andrews theory

They don’t look soft I can tell you that. This will be a team that is harder to play against especially if they can add a solid top 4 defender with an edge

      • karlssens

Like they will do that.. I have no faith for this team attaining another player.

        • Andrews theory

I don’t see them being a cap floor team

Eugene is cheap but he also needs to fill seats

          They aren’t done

          • HamadBo$$

Well clearly he isn’t doing a good job at filling seats

  • Harv

Wow, a lot of folks here believing it is the end of the world as we know it today. Well, at least, the end of the Senators. Amazing how many armchair quarterbacks have a greater knowledge than a guy who has been doing this for years and years – decades, in fact. How many here wanted Spezza gone? He’s gone. And, we got four guys in return. We gained a lot of youth and a lot of potential. Now, we are shooting at the guys left even before they have had time to mature.

Well, this is my team right or wrong and I am going to wait and see how things go next year. choose not to run around and yell about the sky falling while publicly slandering the owner, the GM and anyone within range.

I have no doubt that Murray is a better judge of hockey players and the team’s needs than us.

    Go Sens!

    • HamadBo$$

we wanted him gone, but we wanted a decent return, not a bag of pucks

      • Harv

No matter what you are selling, it is only worth what people will pay you for it. You got what Spezza was worth.

        • HamadBo$$

Spezza was worth more. I’m not really mad at Murray, I’m actually mad at Melnyk because he wouldn’t let Murray take salary back

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

So you think that Murray left a better offer on the table?

          • HamadBo$$

yes only because Melnyk’s internal budget didn’t allow him to do so

          • Harv

With respect. You and I and no one else on this board have a clue what Melnyk and Murray discuss, what their “internal” budget is or why they decide what they decide.

Isn’t it time to give management and the owner a break?

          • laffin681021

Do you even have any information that none of us know that there was a better offer on the table or are you just speculating because Melnyk is cheap? either way you have no idea which teams offered what and from what the media says, there were only a couple teams offering up for Spezza. St. Louis wasn’t going to give us what all of us fans wanted unless you think Berglund was a great choice. If that trade would have happened fans would have been just as mad. I just don’t see your reasoning. remember there was also the list of 10 teams (make it 12 because of TO and MTL) that Spezza wouldn’t go to.

          • laffin681021

Give me a team that would be willing to part ways with what you wanted

          • Harv

Well, that is the point, isn’t it. A lot of people here seem to think a) Murray had better offers but took Dallas, or, b) should have held onto his property hoping the buyers would pay more. I always remember my real estate agent telling me to take the first offer because it is usually the best. She also said to make sure you set your price right.

Seems to me that’s what Murray did.

          • laffin681021

I agree with you. Even looking at St. Louis and how everyone wanted Tarasenko or Schwartz. Those two players are going to be/are a big part of their core, and Some fans think that they would actually part ways with one of those two players for 1 year of Spezza? not a chance.

          • Harv

Yes. And, if those two guys were Senators and Murray traded them for Spezza he would have been drawn and quartered.

          • Harv

You may think your house if worth $500,000 but if no buyer will pay you more than $300,000 then it is worth $300,000. That is a cold hard fact.

        • Sensnation

We got his worth in the current market, which you have to admit is a buyer’s market. I’m not upset at the results given the market, looking forward to the future!

      • KJ

You have no idea. We won’t know what these players will turn into for a year or two yet, but I bet Dorion and his team advised BM

      • Sandy

In the end it was only Dallas left of teams that had legitimate interest in Spezza.
        Murray had to get something.

Would you prefer they keep him for next season and let him walk for nothing?

        • Dirtysweetness

Also, Dallas didn’t get an extension with Spezza. So as it stands right now, Spezza is a one year rental.

          • Andrews theory

Bingo, watch him sign an extension same day to say shove it up your ass to Euge lol

          • Dirtysweetness

I really feel bad for Murray. Hall of fame GM that has to spend the twilight of his career working for a Harold Ballard type owner. IMO

          • KJ

And it cost Dallas 4 pieces for 1 year thus far. Spezza said he hasn’t even considered an extension

          • Dirtysweetness

It’s bittersweet. It’s sad to see Spezza go but, we will end up better off.

      • Deadly

3 years ago,and 1 back operation ago he was worth more but all things considering I think we will be pleased with the 2014 draft and trade additions.

      • bluebuyyoo

Reality sucks for the Spezza bashers.

      • Lucretia

For those so anxious to get rid of Spezza…watching him play in Dallas next year should be mandatory viewing.

    • Sandy

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Did I say thank you?

      • Harv

So, I am counting you “IN”, Sandy?

        • Sandy

          Yes.
It’s getting stupid here today. Nobody is giving these new guys a chance.
They are pissed that Nischuskin (sp?), Benn or Seguin wasn’t the return.

          • laffin681021

Some fans needs to realize that giving up one of those players is like us giving up Turris, Karlsson, or Zib. That’s their core and if Murray even mentioned them he would a big ol’ click and dial tone.

          • KJ

It’s not like BM didn’t advise anyone, heh heh. He was very upfront about it. Agree with you a Sandy.

          • Sandy

This team wants to get fast, big & physical. They are getting there.
Will there be growing pains with a young team? Absolutely. Not going to argue that one.

          • KJ

Yep. BM has wanted this for some time. it must be killing him the Sens aren’t the ANA of the east… yet

    • KJ

      Yes. Agree!

    • ProfessorPower

time doesn’t equal success. BM has never won a cup. His moves are not horrible, but not good enough….I believe there is more to come, and for now I will trust him to do so.

      • Sensnation

3 years ago he was tasked with rebuilding this roster. Right now we have a wealth of depth and skill throughout the org with tons of potential in just about every position. More top end skill would be nice, but I hear most teams saying that. Will be an interesting next chapter.

        • ProfessorPower

3 years later he is still making moves which suggest a rebuild. I am not saying his job is easy, but those who think BM is amazing are just as clueless and those who think he is absolute garbage..he is a mediocre GM who ices a mediocre team. He has lost fans, players, and coaches…I wan’t nothing more to see Ottawa and BM win a cup. I just don’t understand what the hell kind of direction we are moving in, I hope he does.

          • Sensnation

Suggest a rebuild? You mean continuing a rebuild or do you think Turris, Ryan, Zibanejad, Chiasson, Stone, Puempel, Lazar can’t fill our top 9 going forward? Lehner in nets. Karlsson, Ceci and Cowen on D among others. Worst case, in their prime this group should be able to compete with an injection or two added.

          • ProfessorPower

Yes, getting 4 prospects is a deal for the future. I am not saying it is a horrible deal, but personally I would go a different route pushing for a one-for-one type of move. Switch Chiasson with a true established top 6 and ice a much better team. I still think BM is looking for another big trade/player and I hope so. Compare those players to other teams, we are good..good. At some point we have to make a move for contention..and if he want’s to win in the next 2 years that move should happen soon. This team is set up for the future for sure..but, we dont have an identity, we are lacking toughness, we are lacking leadership/experience, we are lacking defense, we are lacking scoring..all things that can be solved with time as you suggest. But fuck it I’m impatient

          • Sensnation

I’m sure if Murray could have found a good 1 for 1 he would have. I’m trying to avoid debating the ifs. Not 1 offer we heard involved that other than maybe Sharp, and honestly I prefer the return we got.

      • Andrews theory

He’s never won a cup but he has set the foundation. Realistically, Murray is setting up his successor with a pretty decent core and they may need to bring in a guy at the right time to add the key pieces.

Muckler wasn’t brought in to build the prospects he was brought in to tweak what we already had and he did a good job from that perspective. Clearly he failed at other areas but you need different managers at different times just like any other business

        • ProfessorPower

except BM has not brought in any prospects personally, he has hired people who can. BM is great for a rebuilding team because he hires a staff that knows what they are doing..BM didn’t know a damn thing about Karlsson before he was drafted. Dorion and his staff get all the credit for our prospect pool, BM deals with the pro stuff and he is mediocre at that. He built the pool in Anaheim and could not make it over the top, after being fired a GM with balls made the right moves to win. I don’t see BM winning, I see him setting another GM up to win in Ottawa.

    • spgottawa

Well said. The world has not ended and the season is still a ways off. I am keen to see Lazar and Chiasson in Sens uniforms and I’m expecting a developmental growth season from Zibby and another step forward for Turris. Even Karlsson should be better with a better start than last year coming off his injury. I think it’s reasonable to see a bounce back from Cowan and progress from Weircoch. Neil and Phillips will likely slow down a bit but their roles and minutes will be lower.
Goalies could also be better. Let’s face it – last year the team performed under expectations so a rebound is possible.

      • Sensnation

I’m not saying we’re as good as Colorado was last year, but we also don’t need to get 1st place. Lots to look forward to and I completely agree even matching expectations of last year’s roster minus Spezza, could be possible.

        • Sandy

Colorado has a couple of 1st overall picks. The Sens have one of those but he’s about 35 yrs old.

          • Sensnation

Not disagreeing, but youth and a low budget are not guarantees of a bottom end finish if there’s skill in that group.

Turris, Karlsson, Ryan are comparable to just about anyone Colorado has, we aren’t devoid of talent.

          • Sandy

But the key for this franchise is to sign Ryan.

      • Harv

Well, call me silly, but I agree with you. I like our team and its potential and it looks like the Spezza return fit into the plan.

      • PraiseAlfie11

Ahh, the age old question: did they underachieve last year, or over achieve the year before in a short season?

        • Sandy

I guess we will soon find out

  • Rafi Bomb
    • Sandy

I think a lot of people on here need to do that today.

    • Doc

Smell that Randy? Can you smell the shit in the air? There’s a shitstorm coming…

      • Aaron 2.0

Hahaha. Nobody have a shit-attack out there today. The winds of shit are blowing.

      • mr.slapshot

You better haul in the jib ’cause it’s about to get covered in shit.

      • WaitingSince92

You guys are a bunch of fucking shithawks!!!

        • Doc

          Lol. Gotta love that show.

  • John Q. Spartan

Maybe this will finally be the year they get “tanking” right. They should have got RNH or Landeskog in 2011. This is the year they get either McDavid or Eichel, I can feel it! Go Sens Go!

    • CUP 2014-15

“we” like any of us are buying that, LOL

  • BeJamin

Murray is not the issue, it’s Melnyk

    • Doc

      Nuh-uh. It’s the fans fault.

      • Aaron 2.0

Bwahahaha. I don’t want to know how to fix it. All I want to know is who’s to blame. Ruble-rubble-rubble. Seriously though, it should be interesting to see what Murray has to say.

    • Sandy

That I agree with. He cheaped it out for 3 years and now the team and the fans are paying the price.

  • SuckitPhaneuf

    Seriously, is Murray alive?
    Someone should check on him

    • Sandy

Maybe he’s nipping at the bottle.

    • not YOUR wingman

Seriously – give it a rest

  • SuckitPhaneuf

What is Murray going to say??
    I decided to do nothing

    • Dirtysweetness

“I can’t work for this idiot any longer.” “I’m stepping down as GM.”

      “Good luck Ottawa, I’m out.”

      • Doc

        *drops mic*

      • RUSH RLZ

Him and Leeder both. Lots of upper level executives are already gone in marketing and sales.

  • Kielbasa

People can complain about the negativity in here today all they want. No need to sugar coat the reality which is, right now, this team and city cannot keep star players they have or lure more to come on board. Name two other teams in recent history that had two captains in two years pack up and run? That says everything about this organization right now.

    • Sandy

Spezza was here for 11 yrs. Alfie was here for 17 yrs.
I agree what Melnyk has done has hurt this team big time.
There is nothing we can do about it.
If Ryan signs it will calm the masses. If he doesn’t, then it’s all out war on Melnyk.

    • RUSH RLZ

Amen brother. And saying the sky is falling is only stupid if the sky isn’t falling, which it is.

My rant from two days ago, the worst case scenario is taking place.

Mark my words we will be hearing the B word by end of next season.

  • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Anyone have a link to the presser?

    • WaitingSince92

      ANYone? Bueller?

  • esk

so looks like we won that heatley trade…mm9 still a senator and productive meanwhile heatley is looking for a job :D

      … in the KHL

  • LeafsSux

Thank god for the NHL package on Direct TV it will be alot cheaper watching the games for me this year.. :/

This team has become a fucking joke. Poor Murray, must suck having to work for Dickhead Eugene.

    • do due dew doodoo

Salient point – would you willingly work for Eugene ?

No choice if that’s the case.

  • bluebuyyoo

    HFBOARDS lite!

  • Sandy

So the Sens & the Leafs have conferences at the same time. I expect 30 minutes of the Leafs and 10 sec for the Sens.

  • esk

murray gonna announce extensions or what?

  • ProfessorPower

anyone have a link to his interview? where is it?

  • Keregan

i’m i the only one here who’s happy with our lineup. I much prefer a lineup without floater and fill with kids with alot of gaz to burn anyway we will see soon enough what kind of team we are next year

    • Sens-fan-in-mtl

      agreed, let the kids play!!!

  • Dirtysweetness

Love it! TSN is ripping Euge for not spending money.

  • Doc

Hahaha TSN analysts talking about Ottawa situation. Love it!

We know it’s all public now.

    • esk

ahh eugene gonna be pissed..that tv deal lol dont think partners should be talking about each other like this haha

      • Doc

I think they should! Something needs to be done, and it’s the livelihood of many many people.

    • Sandy

You should have heard the Reporters.

      • RUSH RLZ

Caught a bit, yeah it was brutal.

      • CUP 2014-15

They are such a joke. Bringing up Yashin as if Ottawa was the problem, ask NYI how he worked out for them. Then they include Hoss and Heater when in reality they were traded for each other. They know what sells in the T.O. market place.

        • Sandy

They hate Ottawa anyway, so why would they bother checking facts

        • sprucesens

yeah, i was telling that to my wife. glad they are calling out melnyk, but fuck are they stupid. Hossa wanted out? Yashin? Seriously 10 years ago? we got heatley, spezza, chara from those moves. dumbasses, but good for them for knowing what they are talking about

    • RUSH RLZ

      Yeah listening…

    • Sensnation

“They’ve got a lot of 4 through 9s, the problem is top 3.” – Agreed

  • esk

    murray lost mad weight..lol

    • Doc

He’s big on CrossFit now. The guy’s a beast.

    • Kielbasa

He probably through up most of it today.

    • Sandy

      That’s what I’ve been saying.

    • do due dew doodoo

Looking like Jack Layton at the end
hope he’s not – you know – SICK

  • Kielbasa

    Richards to Chicago

    • Sandy

Maybe the trade is not with Winnipeg but now with Chicago. They are 2M over the cap.

  • esk

trade in the works murray says

  • Doc

Trade in the works, waiting on other team to choose which prospect they want. Interesting.

    • KJ

Who is this mysterious centre now? I am on the edge of my seat.

      • sprucesens

        ladd?

        • KJ

we do need some more veteran leadership, not sure we are dancing with the Peg though

  • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Link to the presser Damn it!!!

  • Sensnation

Murray’s right, this is the end of the transition from a top end team to a 3-4line full team. Should be interesting.

  • Doc

Gotta love Murray’s honesty. So candid.

    • Sensnation

One of his best qualities for sure. Helps me deal with today’s loss a bit better.

      • Doc

Usually does. He has that effect.

  • Max2166

Working on trade. This should be interesting.

  • Moudy Mahfouz

Really wonder who the trade is

    • Sandy

I tell you. It’s Evander Kane.

      • Sensnation

        Stop teasing me lol

        • Sandy

With the Richards signing in Chicago — it has to be a trade with the Hawks.
They are 2.2M over the cap.

          • sprucesens

chicago has 28 other teams they could trade with

  • Sandy

    What about Ryan’s contract dammit.

    • Max2166

      Good question.

    • Kielbasa

      They seriously better ask

  • Dirtysweetness

How could anyone not feel for Murray? He’s keeping this team’s head above water.

    • Spoons

Not Murray`s fault. We all know that

  • Max2166

    Bryan seems frustrated.

    • esk

cause of the non-stop questions about the budget

    • Kielbasa

      Frustrated with us armchair gm’s

      • Max2166

I would be frustrated working for Gene.

  • Sensnation

    1 more NHL Center!

    • Kielbasa

      Kane?

    • Doc

      Grabo! Grabo! Grabo!

  • Doc

Murray not looking at Free Agent Market any more, looking towards trade.

  • Sensnation

“More inclined to trade than do anything!” – BM

  • esk

No free agents signings for the day! maybe during the week

  • WaitingSince92

    Fuck. You. Gene.

  • JAY79

I will say this regarding today’s trade. Although I am not happy with the return, let’s be honest with each other. Until we fix our defensive issues (which are plenty), the Senators were not going to be that great and even if we made the playoffs it would have been as the 7th or 8th seed and probably out in the first or second round in a weak eastern conference. Given how cheap Melnyk has been combined with us losing pretty much our top line, I am somewhat exited at the very real possibility that Ottawa has a great chance of drafting Connor McDavid next year. Our defense was horrible last season and if not for our offense being pretty descent, we would have been right there with Buffalo and Florida. Combine all that with the fact that Lehner will probably transition to being our number one goalie and although I have high hopes for him, he still is really young. I can truly see us in a lottery position come next year’s draft and to me that is better than always just making the playoffs or just missing them.

    • WaitingSince92

Problem is we’re still not a basement team. We could have a chance at the #1 pick if we got rid of Ryan, Turris, MacArthur, Methot and Karlsson, but that would be stupid.

      I still see our team as a 10th-to-13th-in-the-East-type. No man’s land…

      • JAY79

But that’s just it, we can’t get rid of everybody due to the Salary Cap Floor and look at how bad Pittsburgh was before drafting (or should I say being handed Crosby via what I think was a rigged lottery). Adding a franchise type player like Connor McDavid would Definitely speed up the rebuild. Melnyk himself said he would spend when the time was right and it would put us over the top. Although I’ll believe that when I see it. All I’m saying is drafting McDavid would go a long way in players wanting to come or stay in Ottawa and finishing last for a few years while restocking the cupboards with top end prospects is better then toiling in mediocrity year after year.

      • JAY79

Sorry I misread your comment. I disagree, I think we are pretty close to a basement team. Turris, MacArthur and Ryan will have a much tougher time scoring this year without teams focusing on Spezza. I’m not expert but in my opinion our defense stunk and now so will our Offense.

  • RUSH RLZ

Poor Murray, god bless the guy. He looks like he is going to die. I love you Bryan.

  • esk

damn murray going off. love it!!!

    • Doc

Took shots at Dumb & Dumber. It’s awesome lol.

    • Max2166

      Bryan is pissed.

  • Doc

Boom! That last little comment was directed at Brennan. LOVE IT.

  • Kielbasa

The one thing I love about Murray is he is honest and direct.

  • KJ

“More inclined to trade than anything”… New it. Murray makes a lot of sense to me.
    Love Michalek now!!!

  • Doc

Confirmed that Michalek took a hometown discount. True to his words that he would give Ottawa a chance.

    • Sensnation

What a guy! Gotta love anyone who wants to be here!

    • Sandy

Had another offer more money and 2 yrs longer.

  • Brock

This conference is making me feel so much better about this team.

    • Max2166

Bryan Murray knows what he is doing.

  • esk

this is the way murray needs to be all the time!!! upfront, bold and stop the little rumours. Murray for mayor

  • SuckitPhaneuf

    Respect to Michalek

    • Max2166

      Well said. Congrats Milan!

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

      Agree

  • Doc

Said the young guys will get their chance, that some bring a different brand of hockey. Named Boro and Lazar.

  • Kielbasa

Thank you Murray for calming me down….somewhat. Now…how about Ryan?

  • Sensnation

“1 of the young people” getting a shot at the 4th available forward spot!

    • Doc

Stone or Lazar? Is Stone considered a lock yet?

      • Sensnation

I think Stone has a spot that’s his to lose if someone outperforms and he doesn’t make progress, but most lineups include him.

        • Brock

I think he may be the prospect that gets traded.

          • Sensnation

Can he afford to move out a roster player? Would that open up another forward spot for the remaining youngins?

  • Dirtysweetness

How could you not love Murray?

  • Sandy

Sounds like the Sens will be a team others are going to hate to play.

  • Doc

Gotta love Granpa! Tells it like it is.

  • MikeS

So any ideas on what trade is comming?

    • esk

      not a center

    • Spoons

its a packge that involve a prospect

  • esk

did he just say …”we put the C on the wrong ppl”

    • Sensnation

As a joke though, but ya lol

    • MikeS

      Yep

    • Max2166

      Yes.

  • Doc

Training camp will determine if they see if Lazar more as a center or winger.

Might be easier for him to start off as RW, but definite possibility that he plays Center in the long run.

  • ProfessorPower

okay best guess on the player we are targeting!

    • Brock

      Evander Kane.

      • Spoons

        Gigity

      • ProfessorPower

        please

        Macarthur-Turris-Ryan
        Kane-Zibanejad-Chaisson
        Michalek-Lazar-Stone
        Greening-Smith-Neil

      • JayRuN

        That would be amazing

      • Doc

Does he really fit the identity they are trying to build, though? I don’t see him as the right fit.

        • Brock

Young. Big. Strong. Seems like what Murray was just talking about.

          • Doc

Compete level ain’t there though, and he’s been rumoured to have attitude issues.

Exactly what they are moving away from. They are trying to build a character team.

          • Brock

He also doesn’t want to play on the Jets. I think if he went somewhere else, he would play a bit harder.

          • Doc

That could be a gamble that pays off, à la Turris.

          • ProfessorPower

Pmac could work wonders with him.

        • ProfessorPower

there seem to be character issues, but I feel BM would love to get the guy.

          • Doc

He definitely fits in our “size chart”.

          • ProfessorPower

            haha very true.

      • do due dew doodoo

NOT a PM type of player

    • MikeS

      He said center

    • Max2166

      ROR – Colorado.

      • Doc

Not sure that would be possible seeing as they didn’t sign Stast, but man would I ever be happy.

I would build a statue of Murray on my front lawn.

  • Dirtysweetness

I’m surprised there’s no plan to upgrade defense?

    • Sensnation

Murray’s said for over a year he believes in the guys that are fighting it out, they just need to start distancing themselves from each other more and step up.

    • CUP 2014-15

Well we will see how our young D looks when we have 12 forwards working their asses off backchecking. I t was as frustrating as hell watching Dmen trying to figure out witch of the three attackers to cover.

    • Harv

We are going to upgrade our defence.

Cowen is going to have a rebound year. Karlson is getting his speed and quickness back. Ceci continues to shine. Weircoch improves. Gryba improves. Methot soldiers on. Boro is amazing and Claesson comes up at the mid point.

  • Moudy Mahfouz

    Okay, I am calm

    • Max2166

      So am I.

      • WaitingSince92

Not me. Let’s riot! Turn over Eugene’s car! TP his house (the one in Barbados too).

  • WaitingSince92

    Welcome to the perpetual rebuild!

  • Dirtysweetness

I think it’s Patrick Sharp. Chicago just picked up Brad Richards for 2 million and they were already close or over the cap.

    • MikeS

      Sharp isnt a center

      • ProfessorPower

I think he wants a center but might be prepared to put Lazar/Pageau in that spot..thus targeting a winger.

        • Harv

Think he said Lazar is going to be a center.

          • Sensnation

Sounded more like he plans to have him at wing to start his NHL career, no?

          • Harv

Got to read between the lines. Murray’s the MAN!

          • MikeS

Ya sounded like Lazar on the wing… My best guess is kane or ROR

          • ProfessorPower

I think he said when they first got him they saw him more as a winger, but training camp will decide. He is a natural center, I guess it depends on what position the player BM is targeting in a trade, Winger/Center will determine Lazar’s fit.

          • Doc

They will decide that after training camp. He might play both at some point.

          • Harv

True but it sounds like Lazar has a roster spot to lose.

          • MikeS

Yep, sounds like hes our 4th forward murray wanted. Chiasson, Michalek, Trade to come, and Lazar

          • Doc

He’ll get his 9 games for sure.

          • ProfessorPower

ya he is guaranteed 9 games, the rest it up to him.

          • Harv

That works for me. I will not miss a game. I’ll even buy a ticket. And, he has a great chance to stick.

      • PalladiumDrive

        Yep. Must be Toews ;)

        • MikeS

          Can you imagine

  • Sandy

James Duthie you said it all right there.

Too much expectations on a young team that made the playoffs the first two years of the re-build and there were too much expectations this year.

    • Sensnation

I’m so happy he’s at TSN to fight for our team’s image from time to time!

      • Doc

        Local boy.

    • Harv

That comment impressed me as well. Maybe he actually sees beyond the Laffs.

  • Harv

I am buying into Murray. The guy just told us what the plan was and it sounds good. Of course, he can’t name names. The next three years should be interesting. The sky is not falling. The sky is not falling. THE SKY IS NOT FALLING!!!!

    • HamadBo$$

I wish I was as optimistic as you were :(

    • WaitingSince92

Wait, he told us the plan? What plan is that? Musta missed that one.

As far as I can tell, the plan is to develop talent, let them leave when they get good and we can’t afford them, then restart the rebuild every 3 years.

      Vicious cycle.

      • MikeS

did you not listen to his press confrence, said he has a trade lined up for a “prominent center” and is just waiting on the team to pick a prospect

        • WaitingSince92

No, I only caught a small bit

      • Sensnation

He said if we are making a run in a given year he now has assets to add to the core for a run when the team is ready.

  • Kumar

Player Murray hinted was a center and it has to be via trade.

    • Doc

Gotta be Grabo. Please be Grabo.

      • MikeS

Grabo is FA, he said trade

        • Doc

          True.

    • Jason P.

He said not necessarily a center.

  • bluebuyyoo

    Eric Staal

    • Sandy

He’s paid over 9M in cash. Not going to happen. His cap hit doesn’t matter at 8.2.

  • JayRuN

Eric staal, evander kane, ryan o’reilly, patrick sharp. Id take any of those guys.

    • RUSH RLZ

ROR and signing Ryan long term would be a great start. Don’t hold your breath though.

  • BigTrev42

so is there even any decent UFA’s left to sign?

    • WaitingSince92

      Niskanen

      • JayRuN

        Went to the caps

        • WaitingSince92

Oh, oops, didn’t see that one.

          • Sandy

7 ys at 40.25M or something like that.

          • esk

holy i missed that one..and didnt they sign orpik for like 5.5 mill for 5 years….what the hell is going on there

          • Sandy

            Spending stupid money.
            Sets the market for Methot.
Orpik is no longer a 5.5M dollar player. And is Niskanen worth close to 6M a year?

          • esk

seriously sometimes im glad we have this budget..at least it makes us think twice before spending money

      • BigTrev42

        any decent centers?

  • WaitingSince92

Anyone who thinks Melnyk will pay Staal’s salary – I have some properties to sell you in Florida…

    • Harv

My property in Florida went up 40% in the last two years. Sounds like a good deal to me!

      • WaitingSince92

We’re also trading Greening for Crosby. Sources say the deal is done, just waiting to be announced.

  • Harv

Murrays the man. He got your blood going didn’t he?

  • Dirtysweetness

What teams are close/over the cap right now?

    • PalladiumDrive

      Flyers. Hawks.

      • Sandy

        Bruins as well.
Maybe he’s going after Loui Eriksson? It was rumoured Boston was looking to trade him.
That would keep EK happy as he’s a friend.

  • Max Power

    Please Eric staal

    • PalladiumDrive

Doesn’t he have an NMC? Doubt he waives to come here if he does.

      • MikeS

I doubt staal would leave his brother in Carolina

    • WaitingSince92

      Hello?!?! Remember?!? Melnyk? $!?!?!

    • Doc

      Yuck.

  • laffin681021

EVERYONE JUST HAVE FAITH IN MURRAY

    • BigTrev42

dont you remember the conacher/bishop deal?

      • WaitingSince92

the exception that proves the rule…

      • laffin681021

We’ve been over this over and over again. One goalie had to go and that’s what was offered up. Hind sight 20/20. We didn’t know Bishop was going to be a Vezina candidate a year later and also didnt know Conacher was going to be a bottom 6 guy given his production in TB.

      • Sandy

        Rundblad/Turris
        Elliott/Anderson

    • WaitingSince92

I think a lot of the ‘panickers’ here (like myself) have full faith in Murray; just none whatsoever in Melnyk.

Goddamnit Eugene, you have one FUCKING job to do ($) and you fuck it up.

    • ProfessorPower

every time BM talks I feel far less nervous lol I am confident, but also cautions of his decisions. Hopefully we see that trade within the next few days.

      • laffin681021

He knows his stuff and has a great staff so fans just need to sit on their couch and take a deep breath. We all know it’s going to take a few years to be a contender. Patience!

  • sens_bud

    Mac-Turris-Ryan
    MM9-Incoming Trade-Chiassion
    Hoffman-Zibby-Stone
    Greening-Smith-Neil/Condra

Might flip ZIbby and the new trade depending on who it is. Maybe Stone goes in a trade and Lazar fills in?

    • WaitingSince92

Zibby won’t be traded. Not a chance. For all practical purposes, untouchable.

      • RUSH RLZ

Zibby is not and should not be untouchable. He is a high-value asset is all, depends on the return.

        • WaitingSince92

We’d have to be working on something bigger than big to trade Zibanejad – I’m talking an elite player.

I was typing a list of his attributes, but it’s easier to say he’s a complete package, especially for a young guy. Basically parting with what could be a franchise player? I still say it’s just not going to happen.

Helps our franchise a lot that he’s young and cheap, not fully developed.

    • Brock

If we trade Zibby, I swear to god…

      • laffin681021

Isn’t the plan to have him as our 1C? he won’t be traded

        • Sensnation

          1C? What?

    • Sandy

I think he meant flip him to the 2nd line,

      • WaitingSince92

Hahahhaa, ooops. Missed that one! Right you are.

    • FBP

Why wouldn’t a trade have happened today? I doubt it does.

      • sprucesens

he said the team that he’s trading with is looking through the list of prospects they were willing to include

      • Sandy

The other team is deciding which one of our prospects to take.

  • SuckitPhaneuf

    Brad marchand

    • Doc

      He is a LW…

  • Sensnation

MacTavish makes Murray look even smarter. We are in good hands!

    • RUSH RLZ

      We’re spending like drunken sailors!

      • Doc

        Cheers!

        I’m half way there!

        • RUSH RLZ

I was waiting for my wife to come home from work before imbibing. But I am hammering some back now. Need it after another depressing “frenzy” day. What next a tornado will touch down on the CTC?

Happy Canada Day to all of you!

          • WaitingSince92

If that happens, we should arrest you for controlling the weather. Could get a new arena built, though.

      • Harv

And, what the hell is wrong with drunken sailors – hick?

  • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I am going to go out on a limb and say that it is Evander Kane…and Stone is at least one of the pieces going their way.

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

      Evander Kane

      For

      Stone
      Prince
      2015 2nd
One of our D(this is the piece they are trying to decide on)

      • Sensnation

If that were the package and it’s not Cowen, Ceci or Karlsson (of course), do it!

        • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I am purely speculating no inside knowledge, but it would be along the lines of other similar deals.

Cowen has too much potential for that deal, but I don’t think he is 100% untouchable.

          • laffin681021

If i were to put a % on how untouchable Cowen is at this point in time i’d put it at 95%. We really need to give him another year or two IMO.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I sorta agree, but if he keeps following his same projection his value will be absolutely nothing by then.

          • laffin681021

True but I’m in the boat that’s willing to risk it. If anything see what he’s got this year and explore a trade next summer if Murray thinks that he doesn’t have what it takes to be a top 4. Even next summer might be a little early. Some defenseman take awhile to mature as everyone knows.

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Agreed again, he is a tough frustrating situation.

          • laffin681021

Let’s just hope he takes a big step forward this year

          • WaitingSince92

            I really think he will.

Seems like when he first played in the NHL, we were all salivating at the idea of him and Karlsson being a possibly elite tandem in a few 3-5 years.

I know that seems laughable based on last season, but his injury clearly hurt him and I don’t think it’s more likely he lost his confidence than he became a progressively more ‘stupid’ hockey player.

          • WaitingSince92

Have to risk it, I’d say, just based on the pre-injury version when he started his NHL career. I’d rather risk having a should-have-been, worthless Dman and keep Cowen, rather than trade him and risk another team having a franchise D. Seems there’s no middle road.

      • sprucesens

i would be ok with that. they’d probably have to send a C level prospect back just for contracts purposes. Similar to ludwig going to dallas today

      • ProfessorPower

        no

    • Harv

Kane I want but not for Stone.

      • laffin681021

Agree. I want to keep Stone

        • Harv

Stone is the type of guy we need. He worked his buns off learning to skate and he has the natural ability. Now we just need DaCosta back to play center.

        • sprucesens

and that’s why it would take stone to get kane

          • laffin681021

True but I’d rathar give Puempel

          • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

            Not me

          • sprucesens

i’d rather keep puempel, as he is the best pure goal scorer we’ve had in our system. Not too small either. Also, stone is probably more likely to stick in winnipeg, because he’s from there, and would sell more tickets, not that that’s a problem there

          • laffin681021

Well let’s find a way to keep both and get Kane! one can only dream.

  • FBP

Why is everyone happy? Is there a link to this BMGM presser somewhere?

    • Harv

He speaks without forked tongue. He tells the truth. He doesn’t hide the limits of what he can do. He is a hockey man. We are in good hands. And, I am going for another Ceasar or Ceeser, whatever!

      • FBP

But all we did today was get rid of our best forward. The honesty of a GM doesn’t help this.

        • Sensnation

Listen to it. It will let you know it sucks, it’s life, but the sky isn’t falling.

        • Harv

It is all good. Repeat after me.

“Bryan is the MAN and we have a locker full of future.”

        • CUP 2014-15

wrong. one of our best forwards got rid of us

        • Sandy

The best forward wasn’t going to re-sign. At least Spezza had the decency to tell Murray that and both agreed to a trade.
It’s certainly more than Alfie did for the Sens.

          • Harv

Gouldn’t agree more. Spezza is a class act and gave the Sens a chance. I am wishing him the best in Dallas and will be watching every Dallas game I can get my hands on.

          • esk

thats actually really a good point…should be what the fuckin SUN writes about tomorrow

    • Sensnation

Murray was honest, to the point and very informative on all the decisions that were made, the reasons for those decisions and the reassurance about the current roster as well as upcoming trade he has in the works.

  • JAY79

You see I think that’s stupid if Murray is going to give up prospects and youth for a “Prominent” Center when in the grand scheme of things it won’t do us any good. I would much rather finish near the bottom of the league then consistently finishing between 10-7th in a weak eastern conference. Melnyk said he’d spend when it would put us over the top so unless he’s lying which wouldn’t surprise me, I don’t think we should do anything drastic. I think it was mistake to trade for Ryan as well. We lost prospects, it got us nowhere (we still missed the playoffs) and he might leave for nothing next season.

  • Dirtysweetness

I love my PVR! Murray- ” I tell it the way it is” “I don’t usually fib anybody”

    • esk

      keyword: usually

      • Dirtysweetness

You typically won’t see “don’t” and “usually” in the same sentence! Lol

    • Harv

      HE’S DA MAN!!!!!

  • Brock

Damn. Nonis looks like he just shit his pants.

  • Doc

Chirp has been awfully quiet today…

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

      I have figured it out

      Chirp is MURRAY!

      • Doc

        Gasp!

      • Terry

        “Faints”

    • Doc

At least Tooks is at Summer Camp and doesn’t have access to the Internet.

    • SensChirp

Ha. Spent some time at the beach from 2-4. Updated now at the top. Still think they are working on a couple things.

      • Doc

Jig is up “Chirp”….or should I say Murray?

      • Sandy

Good for you Chirp. You missed a lot of crap on here today. Aren’t you lucky.

        • SensChirp

Always watching. Not sure I’ve missed a comment in five years.

  • CUP 2014-15

Watching and listening to Nonis, there is noway BM would ever deal with this guy as he would feel like he took advantage of the poor fool

  • Zachpraisetheswedes

I bet you that centre is Berglund

    • Sensnation

      nooooooooooo L(

  • Sensnation

For those that missed the BM press conference, here’s the audio:

    http://proxy.autopod.ca/podcasts/chum/1/23396/bryan%20murray%20presser.mp3

    • CR Sens

      Thank you!

  • Dirtysweetness

Murray is looking to add an “NHL ready player” and “not necessarily a center”

  • Zachpraisetheswedes

I desperately want E. Kane but I highly doubt it will happen

  • FBP

I dont believe in this GMBM press conference.

Edit – Sensnation to the rescue!

    • Doc

      Do you believe in Magic?

    • Sensnation

Man I gave you the link 2 mins ago and started playing it at the same time. You are saying this without listening to it completely.

      • Doc

        lol…

      • FBP

I listened to it. It didn’t give me any hope at all. Sounds like someone running through a list of excuses.

        • Sensnation

Sorry you see it that way. He gave more than most gms do or need to, and if the Michalek and Vermette stories aren’t positive for you, hopefully you can find a way to just keep cheering the team.

          • CUP 2014-15

            Don’t feed the trolls please

          • FBP

Shit. Sorry to fuck with your day m’am. I’m only trying to
engage in opinions about the team I support.

          • FBP

            What is the Vermette story?!

          • Sensnation

It was in the press conference clip.

The day he had to trade Vermette was really tough and hard trade to make. He got Leclaire back who didn’t pan out, but he also got a 2nd round pick back that is turning into our goalie who will be our starter for a long time. Sometimes the true value for the trade is much further down the road than we want and not always obvious the day of.

          • FBP

I guess I’m not looking for a GM that gives. I’d rather a total ass GM who produces hope, ticket sales and results.

          • Doc

So you’re blaming in all of this?

        • Doc

You must be fun at parties.

          • FBP

I get provoked for not buying shit from management and ownership over and over. Oh well.

          • Doc

            No, that’s not it.

    • Harv

      That’s called “free will”.

  • Deadly

Just saw them comment on the Red Wings inactivity.
    Any news on Number 11?

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

Nope, apparently he is waiting a while.

    • Sandy

He wil decide in August if he will play for Detroit or retire.

That’s per someone called Helene St James.

  • CUP 2014-15

    B.Boyle to TB

  • Sensnation

Listening to the press conference again, he says Lazar might have to play C instead of RW because Chiasson and the trade he’s working on now. I guess that means another RW is inbound in the deal, not E Kane or Staal or the other names being mentioned?

    • CUP 2014-15

Back to the Stewart trade again maybe?????

      • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

God I hope not…that would be a major let down(as a major trade)

      • Sensnation

Someone said something about a Buffalo rumor earlier. Could be. Giving Tim a pick of the B and C prospects he drafted here.

      • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I really hope that T Murray gets stuck with him

    • Brock

Kane can play the wing, can’t he?

      • Sensnation

        LW

    • spgottawa

      Wayne Simmonds!

      • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

        ohhhhh that could be nice!

        • spgottawa

Philly is over the cap but still needs a forward – they need to give up quality for quantity and spend less money – we need to do the opposite

      • CUP 2014-15

They would make today a National holiday, oh wait. Could you imagine?

      • Doc

        lol…

    • Pasky

Just to name off the current RW he have:

      Ryan
      Chiasson
      Stone
      Condra
      Neil

So its not like theres plenty of room as is. To me it means the trade doesn’t involve a C and might even include Pageau as the prospect.

      • Sensnation

Or as some have said it could involve Stone and Condra becomes an extra forward.

    • Aaron 2.0

Oh, good pick up. But, didn’t he also say he thought we were thin down the middle, and was looking to rectify it through trade?

  • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

So predictions on what that other team with an offer for Milo was?

    Dallas?

    • Brock

      Nashville.

  • WaitingSince92

Here I was saying we weren’t going after Staal, but if you listen to the presser, Murray clearly tells. When asked if the pending trade would happen today, Murray said the other team told him “…it looks like they’re Staaling to pick one of our prospects…”

He also said “…when- if it happens…” so it’s obviously a done deal.

  • Sandy

So a trade for a prominent player
So it has to be Murray is trading one of the excess D, a prospect yet to be decided (not name Lazar or Puempel), the 2nd round pick just received from Dallas.
So to do a trade supposedly quantity for quality, you have to be dealing with a team that is dumping salary.

  • JayRuN

I bet it is chris stewart

    • Tcharger – #TheFansFault

I doubt it, T Murray would know exactly who he wants.

    • SensChirp

Think this is one of the moves they are looking at, for sure.

      • Doc

        *clears throat*

        Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

        • JayRuN

If stewarts just one of the trades i wouldnt mind. But i hope its not the main trade murray was talking about

      • Aaron 2.0

Disappointing presser (not really Murray’s fault I’m sure, feel bad for him) and disappointing if Stewart’s on route. Stewart’s not a C though? That gives me hope. He was pretty specific in the presser about being short at C. He thought the wings were fine.
