End of the Line for Big Rig?

End of the Line for Big Rig?

The NHL Trade Deadline is less than a week away and rumours continue to swirl around the future of veteran defenceman Chris Phillips.

As the team departs for the West Coast, there is a chance that the long time Senator is playing his last couple games in an Ottawa Senator uniform.  According to Pierre LeBrun from TSN, the Sens have offered Phillips a one year deal.  Meanwhile, Phillips has made it clear that he believes he has at least a couple more seasons left and is seeking a multi-year extension.  It’s a tough situation that both Bryan Murray and Chris Phillips will have to make before Wednesday’s deadline.

The Boston Bruins are a clear frontrunner should the Senators decide to move Phillips with some suggesting the asking price could be as high as a top end prospect and a draft pick.

  • Doc

Prospect and a pick? Wow, kinda surprised by that.

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Think the rumor from a Boston source was Spooner and a pick

      • boom

Do that in a hearbeat. That Spooner kid can play!

    • thirstytraveller

No kidding! I’d run that to the bank asap. Do it Murray!

  • Joshua Delorme

Chris Phillips for a top end prospect and a draft pick, make it happen Bryan!

  • Simple Jack

Bon voyage chris, go get that cup.

With the sens bursting at the seams with prospects we need some space, we also need a veteran dman, do we keep chris with a new offer, or do we trade a young roster dman for an earhoff or simular vet?

    • PraiseAlfie11

They aren’t deep in d down in bingo.

  • FistsofNeil25

Okay seriously? Loyalty and nostalgia aside, if Murray can get a top end prospect and a pick for Phillips at this point in his career then they shouldn’t even be talking extension. Take the trade with Boston and run!

Yes the Sens need a veteran dman but Phillips isn’t the guy anymore.

  • Spoons

Ryan Spooner : Puck possession guy from Kanata. Murray probably has a semi on this kid… um, that kinda sounds wrong…

  • TookieIs100PercentRight

Yeah, if someone wnats to give us a pick AND a prospect for Phillips, I’ll drive him to the airport myself. He should have been let go with the rebuild anyway so…

  • Roar…

If the offer for Phillips that good the team should pull the trigger immediately. We aren’t winning Stanley this year. Phillips could help a contender to some degree. He’s done enough in Ottawa and I don’t think there is a lot left for him to do here unless he wants to come back on the cheap as the 7th guy.

  • MethotToMyMadness

So if the Bruins are serious, then they are planning to offer him at least a 2 year deal? That’s what he’s asking in Ottawa. Or does the fact he’s getting to play in Boston with a chance at a Cup change things?

If I’m Ottawa, I’m pushing my hardest for a high pick and a decent prospect in return. If no prospect, than at least a 1st. It will be close to the bottom, but that would at least provide Ottawa with a 1st in this years draft.

    • Dmare085

why take on a first in a very weak draft this year where a kid maybe a 3-4 year project. Take the Spooner kid and run with it. If you can get a pick with it then so be it but i would rather have that young roster potential roster player coming back.

  • A-Train

Deal actually really makes sense for the Bruins. Phillips could be really useful for them and they know their Cup window will be closing soon and they’ve got as good a shot as any elite team of making it out of the East this year. Win/win if we can get a first or a Spooner-type prospect back. Probably not both though.

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Who cares about a first this year.

    Philips
    3rd whenever they want it

    For
    Spooner
    2015 1st

    • FistsofNeil25

That’s a massive overpayment for Phillips.

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

That’s along the lines of what the team 1200 read from a Boston source

        • FistsofNeil25

They said a top prospect and a pick, not a top prospect and a first round pick in a reported very good draft year.

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

            Realistically I’d see something like

            Spooner and a 4th/5th,for Philips

Even then I’d run to the bank with it

    • Dmare085

if phillips is dealt, i still hope big rig stays opened lol

  • MethotToMyMadness

Wow, GIRARDI AGREE TO SIX-YEAR, $33M CONTRACT EXTENSION

    • MethotToMyMadness

Sorry, I had to edit my post ALOT!! lol This damn beer is doing strange things to me.

    • FistsofNeil25

I know. My offseason acquisition wishlist just got shorter.

    • MethotToMyMadness

      Isn’t 5.5 a year a lot for a guy who has 35 goals and 136 A’s through 548 games?

    • Dmare085

      huge overpayment

    • Sandy

Does that mean the end for Callahan in NY?

  • sprucesens

with girardi gone, the price just went up! lol. seriously though, take a good prospect and pick, and laugh all the way home. love the guy, but go get your cup, or better shot at it. We’ll finish the rebuild and contend when you are behind our bench as a defensive coach or something

  • sprucesens

also, reading a bit about st. Louis and that he asked for a trade to NY back in 09. very strange stuff. Now the bloggers and so on are going on to paint him as potentially selfish and so on. With this, and alfie in 6 months, it really lets us know that players are still always looking out for number one, but sometimes the media and so on maybe takes it a little too far. Different scenario’s obviously, but strange has fast the media and so on can turn on a player seen as classy and legitimate.

  • Mclovin

If Phillips goes, we’d need to move a young dman for someone more experienced. Say Cowen for Erhoff or something like that. Can’t be throwing too many young dmen to the wolves all at once. We’d still have Karlsson, Wirecock, Gryba, Ceci, Boro all under age 25 next year.

  • Brock

Currently, 666 points in 666 games played for Spezza. Just sayin’.

  • Andrews theory

If a team offers up a top prospect for Phillips I’d take that n it’s own lol….

Funny how just this morning everyone was saying we’d essentially get nothing for him.

Chiarelli knows Phillips as do Kelly and Chara. He’d likely help their PK out and they have the horses that he doesn’t need to play top 4

    • FistsofNeil25

He would also be very insulated there by a great defensive system.

  • Sandy

Sell what you can for prospects. This year’s draft is not suppose to be very good.. next year’s however they are saying is similar to 2003 draft..
The Sens are 5 pts out of the last playoff spot with 4 teams to climb over. Their next game is an afternoon game… so with the history of losses in afternoon games this season.. their chances of winning that game are very low.
Don’t want to sound like a downer.. just being realistic..

  • ProudSens

Don’t care right. I’ll care on Monday after the Heritage Classic. Enjoy the game with family and friends. My buddy flew out yesterday for the game. Lucky basturd. Go sens Go
Ie. a pick and a prospect? Ok I’ll take it. Lol

  • CUP 2014-15

Miller and Ott reported as scratched for tonight, the chips may start falling soon. Hope there is lots left for the 5th. Makes for a good pub day.

  • Sandy

3 weeks from Sunday I head to Tampa & Sunrise for hockey and shopping and getting away from this freakin’ cold City..

  • CUP 2014-15

Mc Kenzie just tweeted possibility of a three way between Buff, ST.Louis and Ottawa. LOL,

  • Sandy

Miller and Ott scratched for Buffalo tonight..
    Something is up…

  • i am just saying

Spooner ? Really ? Another center?

Not what Ottawa really needs IMHO

  • i am just saying

    posted 2 minutes ago

    Bob McKenzie
‏Don’t know the specifics yet but Miller is going to STL and Halak is going to BUF.

  • SensFanInMTL

Hopefully he’s got some sort of trade value left and Chiarelli is stupid enough to give us back our 1st rounder and we can grab Josh Ho-Sang.

    St. Louis Blues ‏@StLouisBlues 1m

BREAKING: The Blues have acquired Miller & Ott from Buffalo for Halak, Stewart, Carrier & two picks. INFO

    So.. no Stewart in Ottawa…

    • CUP 2014-15

this would be step one of the possible 3way as Tim now has the guy BM wants and you know he has his wish list in BM ‘s hands already

      • Tyler Oakman

it’s not done. i bet ottawa is involved somehow

edit: bob mckenzie says no impending deal between bufflo and ottawa

        • CUP 2014-15

McKenzie just posted nothing pending between OTT and Buff but I posted on Monday that I believed this possible and was looking for feedback so I am hoping it happens as its not often that I guess right. lol

          • Tyler Oakman

ottawa is still flying to vancouver mind you. could change when they land

          • CUP 2014-15

            Very good point

      • Moudy Mahfouz

wow what a trade. I love this time of the year!

      • Aaron 2.0

I’m not personally in love with Stewart as a target. Ehrhoff would be great though! That would give us 3 D that are top-4 good right now with a few good candidates to eventually become solid top-4 D in Ceci, Cowen, and Weircioch.

    • Aaron 2.0

Good job by Tim Murray. Picks include a 1st in 2015 and 3rd in 2016. Considering Buffalo still has Enroth, that is one hell of a trade for them.

      • Cicero

        It’s a win-win for sure.

      • CUP 2014-15

wow, is there a limit on how many draft picks one team can handle without having their scouting team laugh themselves to death. Tim has got huge ammo to hire a great team in the field and in the office, They are going to be special and the Blues just moved to the final four talk.

        • Senatollah

No real limit – but can only have 50 players under contract, so unless a lot of them remain in junior they may have an issue managing the contract limit. Not sure if they can trade a drafted player not under contract (why would the other team take the risk if he doesn’t sign see Shultz flight risk)

  • Aaron 2.0

Chirp, just seeing your tweet on the side about Phillips. Assuming that BM can get a prospect and a pick for Big Rig, I think they have to do that.

  • Rick of the Universe

Saint Louis just won their first Stanley Cup

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Absolutely massive deal for both clubs!

Curious to see what happens now.

  • FistsofNeil25

What an absolute fleecing by Timmy Murray. Now what is Bryan going to give up for Chris Stewart?

    • karlssens

      Prince + greening :)

  • karlssens

If we somehow get Stewart and Erhoff, while also getting rid of Greening, that would be a dream come true!

  • Sandy

Off topic.. B-Sens losing 5-0 at the end of the 2nd period to St. John’s (the Jets farm team)..

    10 penalties for the B-Sens.. 2 for St. John’s

  • karlssens

Cowen, greening, prince for Stewart, Erhoff, first?

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Getting Chris Stewart or PA Parenteau won’t make a difference in the Sens making the playoffs unless we get a defenceman. We don’t need a forward. I think Murray is going to make a deal out of pressure.

  • Sandy

    Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie 4m

BUF picks up difference between Miller’s/Halak’s salaries, which is $1.75M annually, but in actual dollars it’s $288K. Both expiring deals.

    Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie 17m

I’m told there aren’t likely to be any more BUF moves tonite. I’d say BUF will try to flip Jaro Halak to MIN and Chris Stewart to OTT.

  • SensGod

I would trade Phillips for a roll of toilet paper.

    • karlssens

      2 ply or 3?

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

        How about used?

  • FistsofNeil25

Bob MacKenzie just floated the idea of Buffalo shipping both Moulson and Stewart to Ottawa.

    • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Hmmmm that could be interesting, assuming that both resign

      • FistsofNeil25

        Moulson-Spezza-Stewart
        MacArthur-Turris-Ryan
        Hoffman-Zibanejad-Michalek
        Greening-Smith-Neil

        • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

And if wingers 25 and 26 don’t work with Spezza your decision on him is made.

          I like it!

          • FistsofNeil25

I wonder what number Stewart will wear with Neiler wearing #25.

        • karlssens

So beautiful.. Instantly one of the best forward groups.

    • karlssens

Moulson scares me.. Throw in Ehrhoff instead.

  • Moudy Mahfouz

geez what a nerve racking friday night

  • karlssens

SC what are you hearing? For the love of god talk to us!!

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

We need a defenceman why can’t BM see this.

    • karlssens

Why prevent goals if we can just score them! When Murray clears out bodies in the summer, there are people in bingo capable of playing.

      • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Not worth it, imo. I don’t think scoring more goals will necessarily mean playoffs, or a successful one at that.

        Defense wins Championships.

        • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

We have capable d….. Just not on our team currently

          • jasonontheoldsenschirp

            Huh?

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

They are in bingo while we continue to play dead weight

          • jasonontheoldsenschirp

NHL ready defencemen in Bingo? Oh. Why aren’t they with the Sens then.

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I would assume you hadn’t watched a game by that comment….but I know you have been around for ages…so going to assume someone pissed in your cornflakes this morning and you still aren’t over it.

          • Sandy

At this point in time, other than Boro, we have no idea how those young Bingo defensemen will do in the NHL…

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

            Yes….

He is the primary one I was implying

      • SenaTHOR

        Washington?

    • luckan20

      Exactly.

    • Sandy

I was thinking the same thing. This team can score.. at least most nights. But it’s the keystone cops a lot of nights on the backend…
This team needs defensive help. Some of you said before the season started — looking at the defense at the time — it could turn into a nightmare.. and it has..

  • luckan20

Ottawa needs to unload dead weights. I will close my eyes and trade Phillips to the Bruins. I will gladly take their top pick.
Move guys like Cowen, Greening and Condra. Solidify the team by promoting Stone, and Grant to NHL. Get some young guys who can skate and bring energy to the team.
We need to address on our top 4. We have Karlsson, Methot, Ceci, need a top 4, Wiercioch…..

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Truth be told, I just want Cowen to GTFO.

    • IcySurfas

I get being frustrated with his defensive zone brain farts from time to time .. but “GTFO” ? You don’t just give up on a player like Cowen like that. Defensmen take longer to develop. Lets not pull the plug just yet on the kid.

      • Simple Jack

I’d like to down vote that!

  • IcySurfas

I’m sure Miller and Ott are over the moon right now. But you gotta think Stewart and Halak are feeling pretty shitty right now … this morning they were playing for a legitimate Stanley Cup Contender … now, they play for the last place team in the league.

    • CUP 2014-15

I don’t think Stewart ever plays a game for Buff.

  • SensChirp
  • Sandy

    B-Sens lost 6-2.

  • EHMatt

Screw signing Phillips. Think logically, high end prospect and a pick? Do it. Phillips can always resign with Ottawa if he really wants to stay here. Take one for the team.
