Da Costa to Binghamton

Da Costa to Binghamton

A day after placing him on waivers, the Ottawa Senators have sent forward Stephane Da Costa to Binghamton of the American Hockey League.

Da Costa may not have had much of a chance to succeed up here but he was strong in training camp and earned himself a trip to California and an NHL paycheque.  His skill set is more in line with a top six forward and there just wasn’t room for him up there right now.

He’ll be an important addition to the line up in Binghamton though and should add to the offence down there.  Bryan Murray addressed rumours of the next call up yesterday and said that there was no decision imminent on that front and that he wasn’t in any rush to do something.

Mika Zibanejad seems like the logical choice but both Derek Grant, Mike Hoffman and Jim O’Brien could also be in the mix.

  • KJ-Sens

Its’ only 5 games in and 77 to go. will worry at 15-20 game mark if things haven’t changed by then.

    • SensChirp

Agreed. I just really want to have a little more festive environment here in the comment section. That game against Anaheim was rough!

      • Tooks

And I wasnt even there…and they say I’m the problem, pfft

        • The Apostle

          you’re a DIFFERENT problem

          • Tooks

            Ahh yes the good problems!

      • KJ-Sens

I agree Chirp. I was really shocked to see all the negatives getting posted over the weekend. really sad, actually. We haven’t even had our 1st home game yet. One thing that is surprising to me came up on the Pierre McQuire spot on the TGOR this morning. Teams from the western conference are apparently that much better than teams from the East.

        • WaitingSince92

Why are you surprised that a fickle fan base is nervous after winning one (unconvincing too) game out of the first five?

It’s only 5 games, but at the same time, we haven’t shown many of the positives fans would look for at this point (Spezza/Michalek/Andy/Karlsson aren’t playing as well as they could).

A playoff team (forget contender for a second) has got to win at least 3 of 6 on a road trip like this.

          • KJ-Sens

But vilifying them? C’mon. It’s not like they weren’t trying. There just a little out of focus at the moment.

  • FBP

Terrible news about Noesen. I hope he recovers.

I wish the game was on at 8:00 pm EST.

  • ReleaseTheKarlsson

“Sloppy” is an understatement. That said, they aren’t far off. I liked the look of Ryan-Turris-MacArthur after Maclean switched the lines up against Anaheim. Michalek and Spezza just don’t seem to have it going right now together. switching Michalek out of line 1 and maybe throwing Zbad back in on the wing with Spezza and Ryan would be interesting to see. I cringed the most when Neil’s line was out there against Perry & Getzlaf. The line matching didn’t go well against Anaheim. Here’s hoping they can get something clicking tonight.

  • The Apostle

The west coast swing has traditionally been tough for the Senators, I think our issues are being magnified this time round because we have no body of work to fall back on, this is our first look at the team. There are plenty of things that I
don’t like about what has happened so far, but a win tonight and we
finish with 6 pts out of a possible 12 which is none too shabby.

We did look out matched against the Sharks and Ducks and that is
worrisome but I’m going to try and wait until the 15th game of the
season before joining up with the trade him, sack him, shoot him
    brigade.

Focusing on the limited positives – really like what Turris has
brought so far, feel he’s been our best player. REALLY like the fact
that bobbyfuckingryan is amongst the goals. We gave up a lot to get him
but I don’t think we are going to be disappointed in his production this
year. There have been touches of the proper Karlsson but he’s still
some way from his best. The positive of that I think is that there is so
much more to come from him. Lehner has been great in the games he has
had so far, he is everything that we want in a back-up goalie this year
and let’s not forget that that is what he is for us, a back-up.

I think we’ll be better able to judge this team once it’s got some
home cooked meals inside it and it’s the middle of November. Absolutely
there are things we need to improve, not least the fact that we seem to
be trying to break the team’s personal best for shots allowed every time
we hit the ice. Anderson has not been lights out for sure, but I
question how effective any goalie tandem is going to be when they are
facing 45+ shots every night (and that’s just the ones that require
    saves).

    • Tooks

League highest 43 shots against a game…I dont care who we have in net, we wont win many games giving up that many shots…Ducks had like 20+ scoring chances…Thats insane.

    • GoSensGoEh

New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils, and Ottawa Senators have a combined 1 home game so far. All three are playing tough games to start, but it will get better for all three teams. Long season ahead.

I’m thinking all the predictions about how well Ottawa was going to do this year has skewed our realistic expectations.

I do have a new respect for the West though. SJS, Ana, LAK, Chi, StL are tough to beat, and in the East, I only see Pit and Bos as tough to beat, with Det, Tor, Wsh, and Mtl (in no particular order) as decent teams, like Ottawa.

      • HamadBo$$

devils suck, nothing will save them

  • KJ-Sens

As a positive stat that came from the weekend- Lehner’s save % is a whopping 0.948! :)

  • SensChirp

Change made to the post above. Not an 8:00 PM start but another 10:00 PM puck drop. Boy it will be nice when hockey games start happening at a reasonable hour again!

    • Conor_smythe

All these game-day naps are messing up my non-game-day sleep schedule. Add 3 turkey dinners in there, I can barely keep my eyes open this week

  • Icemen11

Well the Sens have played spotty on the road trip. Only a couple real glimmers so far out west. But hopefully they can put a full 60 minutes together because they haven’t yet. They are playing in a environment that isn’t to tough so if they can keep their heads down and keep the sun out of their eyes LOL they should be able to win this game!! GO SENS GO

  • Hax

Too bad for Noesen but in a weird (selfish) way it makes me feel a little better about the price we paid for Ryan.

Not sure why anyone is panicking though. 4 points in 5 games is not great but it’s hardly panic-worthy on its own. The sloppy play is a big concern but the fact that we did manage to piece together 4 points while playing like shit is actually good (every team will go through a shitty stretch). And we only had one game where we lost by more than one.

Agree completely that a win tonight will ease things for everyone but I’m hoping more for some consistent play and less mistakes. If we play a solid game and lose 1-0 or something I’ll feel much better than if we play like crap again but manage to win 4-3.

    • Tooks

Yeah too bad I really like Noesen and still do even if he’s with another club, I dont only like Sens players, a good player is a good player! Hope he comes back from this!
Basically like the broadcast said, we have 1 win in 5 games…Not the way you want to start, SENS needa win tonight, wether its sloppy or not, just win! You play to win the game!
A loss to PHX and the SUN tomorrow has the Sens trying to sell the club…

    • Conor_smythe

I really think the term “panic” is getting used too much.. most of us are just being critical

    • HamadBo$$

      are you a psychic?! :P

      • Hax

Well I sorta got half way between. We didn’t play 100% “solid” but much better than we had previously. And we still managed to win 4-3 anyway.

  • SenaWalrus

I wonder how much of a difference it will make when we are back home with last change… I know the SENS don’t line match as much as possible, but it would certainly help to a degree to get more favorable matchups.

Would like to see Zibby brought back up soon.

Also, I liked seeing Ryan and Turris together – I agree that Turris has looked very strong so far. Had another sweet move short-handed in the last game.

I wonder if the top six juggle will continue… what about:
    Ryan – Turris – MM9
    Conacher – Spezza – CMac

Ok, just kidding… but so far Turris has outplayed Spezza this season. Still early and Spezza isn’t 100%.

    • Tooks

Turris has outplayed Spezza in sorts, you can say its because he’s not the main focus of the other teams best checking/top line players which are all on Spezza/Ryan/MM9, I think Turris is growing up real nice as a 2C, fits him perfectly. Keep em there.

      • Kohlmanator

Couldn’t of said it better myself.

MacArthur and Turris have had great chemistry, they need a solid winger that will go to the net. I think that guy is Bobby, but it leave Spezza and MM9 with the same problem as last year.

    • HamadBo$$

      spezza read your post

  • hq8

my prediction is tonight pageau gets to sit in favor of Kassian. the #freeMika campaign may not be successful, but the #lockpageau secret clandestine campaign will probably have immediate success. can’t go through western conference buildings with a 30% faceoff percentage. no knock on the kid, by all means a heart and soul performer-and I myself am a big fan, but the time is not right now.
i have been trying to find out, but did Noesen play against the B-Sens in the weekend back-to-back? Anaheim’s AHL team is norfolk and they split the back-to-back with the sens on the weekend.
phoenix has the most unheralded elite defense corps in the league with first rounders littered all over it and they are very very well coached. Mike Smith usually plays like his life depends on it. its going to be a tough one.

    • Conor_smythe

its a bit of a double-standard when it comes to pageau. 99% of commenters seem to agree that Dacosta is only useful as a top-6 guy and giving him bottom 6 minutes is a waste of his skill set.

Why do we expect Pageau to work miracles on the 4th line, but Dacosta gets the benefit of the doubt?

      • hq8

i think the statement that DaCosta is a waste in bottom 6 is still true and valid. the only thing is that DaCosta has been on the ice for goals for. I think his faceoff win resulted in a goal against LA which was key as we were three down. also, I dont think DaCosta has been caught in a bad spot like Pageau, atleast not till this point. Pageau i think got eaten up on the 2nd anaheim goal and the 4th anaheim goal – each coming right off the faceoff.
as for working miracles, i think noone expected DaCosta to work miracles. Definitely people were expecting positives from Pageau based on his playoff performance from last season and all the positives about his work ethic from the pre-season.
I think Pageau has the upside going forward for the sens, the time is just not right now. i said it in another post too, even within the sens division, other teams are sporting much stronger bottom 6 centremen than what we have going right now. Pageau+Smith/DaCosta is not going to cut it against the Kellys, Ellers, Brieres, Helm/Emertons, Bollands of the Atlantic division. teams are too smart now and line-matching against weak centres is an easy fall-back.
everyone, fans, coaching, management, they all thought this bottom 6 combination would work, and i think there was defintiely evidence that it could fly. but its failed the toughest test it could have faced in the western conference. its time to go with what we all have seen works which is really Zib riding 3C and Smith riding 4C.
the other part that needs to be addressed is what the hell has happened to the sens defense. could losing Gonchar, promoting PW46 and Gryba and adding Corvo as 7thD really cause this type of drastic change in style of play? its mind boggling. one thing I noticed in the anaheim game is a lot of bad pinches. nothing major, but enough to result in dangerous rushes. luckily the sens D is not slow so thats a positive.
and the last part, which has been the common theme in all the games the sens have played: BAD PENALTIES. i think every major sens player has taken one this season already. Spezza, Neil, MacArthur, Smith, EK65, Methot.
honestly, panic is not the right word here, but definitely a bad start if you take into account past performance and the changes made to the sens team this offseason. we can all say that its 5 games in etc. etc. but the fact remains that this has been a fail start given the expectations everyone had – that includes management, coaching, players, fans and this time hell the pundits were also on our side. I dont think the sens need a roster change in terms of trade or signing because we all know this team can play better than they have shown, but they definitely need to get back in line fast.

      • Phil.

Pageau can play PK. So he can get minutes even if he’s not on the top 2 lines. Having said that, he’s probably not going to get much PK time until his face-off % improves.

      • Tooks

Nobody expecting miracles of Pageau, just expecting to do his job, which he hasnt been doing very well as of late. Win face offs and be sound defensively he has not.
Pageau IS a bottom 6 guy, Da Costa isnt that gritty hard working type of bottom 6, he’s more a skill perimeter shooting type (which is why I dont like him anyways)

  • MethotToMyMadness

Like Hax, deep down I was a little upset with the price we paid for Ryan, even though I figured he’d shine here and I know Stars don’t come cheap. Silf and a 1st was already a lot in my mind, but adding Noesen was something that put a sour taste in my mouth. So, in a weird way it also makes me feel a little better. But I never like to see or hear about a player injury, I do hope for the sake of his career he heals up. That is a bad one to recover from, ask 9MM.

Finally the last game of this Western Horror show. They’ve had a few days off, let’s hope they’ve finally adjusted to the time difference. Yes 4 points isn’t bad in 5 games, but it’s not good either. I really hope the Sens come out charging and use those last two defeats to energize them and bring pesky back. Come to think of it, I haven’t seen one tweet from a Sens player about being pesky. Makes me wonder if the club asked them to stop, or if it’s just the players who decided to hold off?

Phoenix is a team that I’ve always worried about, much like Winnipeg. They play a similar score by committee style, which the Sens have adopted the last few seasons. They have some solid vets and prospects who were drafted and raised through the system and are WAY under-rated like Doan, Hanzal, Boedker, Ekman-Larsson and Yandle. The rest of the Team is made up of a lot of individual pieces they collected here and there via trades or FA. I often forget who is actually dressing game in and game out. They have some guys like Ribeiro, Vrbata and Vermette up front and Morris, Klesla and Michalek on the back end. We also can’t forget a pretty good Goalie tandem of Smith and Greiss. It will not be an easy game, Sens need to score first!!!

I do have a feeling that if we end this road trip with a 3rd straight L, Zibanejad will find his way back in the lineup, with Pageau riding the bus back in Bingo for a while. As for SDC, it could be waivers for him.

  • SensFanInMTL

Yes to anyone who agrees it’s only 5 games into the season and of course there will be bounce back games! Although just by the way things have been happening, would there be a reason for Murray to shake things up already?

Onto Da Costa: He’s playing hard, he’s giving it his best and anyone at the NHL level will be looking to give it his all, given that the pressure is all on him. There’s tonight’s road game left and onto heading home. I would like to believe Da Costa if not tonight, then at least to do something come Thursday. There’s only so much patience as fans can endure before something gives. I’ll assume if nothing, Da Costa gets waived, picked up and lights it up with another team, similar to Mr. Silfverberg. Finally, I absolutely am NOT giving up on Pageau, at all. Devils look to suce major bletz and playing home is such a different atmosphere that I can see us taking it, 5-0. Best of luck to our boys tonight.

Really wanna see what PMac does with the lines after going AWOL vs Ducks.

    Will we see:

    MM9 Spezza Conacher
    CMac Turris Ryan
    Greening SDC Condra
    Kassian Smith Neil

    or

    MM9 Spezza Ryan
    CMac Turris Conacher
    Greening Pageau Condra
    Kassian SDC Neil

    • SenaWalrus

You think he will sit Smith?

  • Alcatraz

Maclean said he likes to work in pairs I believe and I really think he wants to have Spezza + Ryan and Turris + Macarthur therefore:

    Conacher-Spezza-Ryan
    CMac-Turris-Michalek
    Greening-SDC-Condra
    Smith-Pageau-Neil

    • Tooks

Yeah if its one guy I would remove from top line its MM9, just doesnt seem the same either, his skating is so choppy and laboured, seems hard for him.

      • Sensnation

I think there’s more chance Ryan gets moved to play with Turris and McArthur than Michalek does. Michalek and Turris have never had any chemistry whereas Spezza and Michalek have had positive spurts over the years. Bring Greening back up with them and let Conacher fight for bottom 6 minutes.

Also, JGP is not the problem in my opinion, but Da Costa has definitely not impressed at this level!

        • Alcatraz

positive spurts to me does not mean you separate our top sniper from our top playmaker. I always found michalek played great with Turris and Alfie when Spezza was injured

      • matsoukas45

I agrree michalek looks like all the injuries have taken their toll on him.

    • The Apostle

For the longer term I would bring back Zbad, lock SDC in the bathroom and go with.

      Michalek – Spezza – Ryan
      MacA – Turris – Conacher
      Greening – Zbad – Pageau
      Condra – Smith – Neil

  • ProbablyNot11

Lets hope they can stop PHX from getting 50 plus shots tonight. 3 games in a row getting peppered like that will be more than I can handle. Not sure what is wrong with the D so far but they must stop taking so many pens. A win tonight and the road trip looks ok. GO SENS!!

  • yannrock

They just need a win to gain some confidence and turn things around.
But in order to do that they need to be more disciplined and play
    better defensively.

Stay positive folks, it’s still very early in the season.

    • SenaWalrus

Stay positive? You must be new to this board…

I can’t believe that no one has started talking about the 2014 draft yet and who we should take with our lottery pick!

      • SensFanInMTL

        We don’t have a 1st in 2014 remember…?

That is why we cannot tank and must absolutely win every single game and only lose 10 for the rest of the year, surpass Pittsburgh, Montreal & Toronto and beat San Jose to win the Cup.

      • yannrock

All I am saying is, let’s stand by the team and give them time to turn things around. I personally think we should wait until the 10 game mark before even thinking about what addition or subtraction would benefit the team.

        • Sensnation

Agreed. This team needs at least 15 games to gel and get into their groove!

  • Alcatraz

No matter what we always suck out west. Regardless of season. Look at the SCF in 2007. We suck there lol..Our suckiness is just heightened because its at the start of the seaosn, look on bright side its out of the way now

    • The Apostle

That’s what I said, but shorter.

    • hq8

yea but then whats the point? are contender or still deep-pretender.

  • WaitingSince92

Maybe the biggest thing for me right now is the lack of discipline. A lot of different players taking dumb penalties (from our dear leader Spezza to the normally responsible Condra). Gotta assume MacLean was pissed about it. Then, you have to assume he got even more pissed as they took more and more stupid penalties each game, not heeding his advice.

    We need some discipline.

    • SenaWalrus

Yeah, can’t believe Spezza got 2 minutes for the tap to the back of the guys head in the San Jose game after what Franson did in OT (knocked a guy over with a punch to the back of the head that led directly to a 3-on-1 OT winning goal) that didn’t warranted a penalty.

      Inconsistency!

    • ReleaseTheKarlsson

My favourite is people pointing to that one penalty and saying “Spezza is not a good captain now, should have picked Neil” while ignoring the numerous stupid penalties Neil has taken as well so far this season.

  • WaitingSince92

Even with adding Bobby Ryan, it’s good to remember that we also subtracted a lot of offence (Silfv, MIka and Alfie).

Those three also played solid defence and hockey in general without the puck.

Looked like Turris and Ryan had some good chemistry out there – maybe some line changes are in order.

    • SenaWalrus

I think the departure of Lundin, Regin and JOB is what is truly hurting us right now…

      • hq8

lol yes hahah, i like how you mentioned Lundin and Regin. missed the Gonch though.

      • yannrock

Latendresse is really missed too right now! LMAO!

  • Tony Gallo

Suprised that no one has posted this, but it seems EDM has inquired about Cowen, Anderson, Smith… and the kicker Spezza. Both teams are not happy with how they began the season and want to shake it up in a big way. Untouchables in Edm: RNH, Hall, J Schultz.

    • SensChirp

      Where’s that from, Gallo?

      • Guest

        Cowen – Nurse?
        Spezza – Nugent-Hopkins?
        Anderson – ????

A huge trade between both teams would be a mistake on both parties. This is why we are so damn fickle. Can we surpass the 10 game mark before shipping off 1 for 1 before even thinking about a massive 6 or 8 man trade?

      • hq8

really stupid shit that got started by one of the team 1200 guys last night on twitter i think it was Steve Warne. Then this morning by Friedman who is clearly looking for filler on his 30 thoughts by saying EDM should target Lehner when Andy has had the shaky start.
Edmonton needs a goalie and a defenseman – this much all EDM writers and reporters agree on. But Ottawa cannot in a million years give up Lehner.

        • SensFanInMTL

For real man. But all of this panicking and trade talk does make for a fun filled day though, eh?

          • hq8

yea but it takes away from real subjective talk about whats really the issue here with the sens. i dont think its personnel due to proven track record. its more just actual execution and one very sloppy managment decision to demote Zibanejad.

      • Tooks

EDM have also inquired about Lehner as per Elliott F.

        • hq8

they havent. he said Lehner would be a good target and that he doubts ottawa would do it. Freidman is out to lunch here big time. he is usually pretty grounded, but he is starting to get into speculative Eklund spheres now.

        • SensFanInMTL

Edmonton would secure a number 1 goalie for years to come. I can guarantee Eberle would be coming back the other way. On the other hand, I absolutely would never give up Lehner. No one’s untouchable but Lehner being moved is just not in the Sens’ organization’s plans anytime soon. Or ever for that matter.

        • SensChirp

Yea, that’s not what he said. Just mentioned that he would be an ideal target.

          • Tooks

Read between the lines SC…EDM has inquired about half our team probably, lol.

      • Tony Gallo

Was told it was discussed this morning on their AM chat radio (CHUD -CHUM something like that)

    • ReleaseTheKarlsson

If this is real, it’s hilarious. I wouldn’t trade any of those players for any package EDM could put together that didn’t include RNH, Hall, and/or Shultz.

    • SensFanInMTL

      Yeah bud, where’s this from?

    • Sensnation

You don’t trade Spezza and Cowen without getting one of RNH or Hall back. I guess that means Eberle would be the key piece coming back based on what you said, which is nice, but it would take more and would hamper the Sens rebuild right as their getting ready to compete.

    • SensFanInMTL

If anyone gets dealt to Edmonton, it has to be Da Costa. Not for his lack of effort, but simply in the event that Nugent-Hopkins or Gagner re-injure themselves and we just have too much depth down the middle in the form of Spezza, Turris, Smith, Pageau, Zibanejad (eventually). Then again we were surprised about seeing Zibanejad not starting the year with us so if management thought Turris for Gagner was a possibility, we’ve all been thrown off before. Maybe Smith could be dealt.

Just as long as Zibanejad isn’t traded for Yakupov, all will be well.

      • GoSensGoEh

Don’t expect any Russians any time soon. Still have a bad taste because of Yashin, and also the small possibility of the KHL calling.

        • SensFanInMTL

Precisely it bud. With Kovalchuk and Burmistrov among the ones who recently left to head back home, I don’t even pick Russians in Fantasy Draft on NHL 14. I kid you not.

    • GoSensGoEh

This is the kind of news that would be front page everywhere, if it were true. I told my daughter earlier today, when someone tells you something, stop, think, it is true, it is possible, don’t believe everything people tell her. Check it out, search it, investigate it, but don’t ever repeat it, until you know for sure it is true.

      • Tony Gallo

Dont be a fuddy duddy ;)

People come to this site already knowing not to believe all that is said… this is a pass time and for entertainment.

As for the radio show comment, I have no reason not to believe my friend of 30 years. Besides radio shows are a dime a dozen and people will say what they want on them… we take them for face value knowing what is said is possible but not neccessarily the reality/truth.

I’m sorry but Im not going to spend hours tracking down someone who made a comment on the radio on an “player inquiry”…If it was an actual “Negotiations are being made on” scenario, maybe… but on an inquiry… thats like telling your daughter to run a background check and police check on someone before asking that person to pass the salt.

        • GoSensGoEh

My comment was to think before believing silly comments, and to fact check before repeating. Next time, include your source in your original post if you want to be taken seriously.

As for the radio show comment, since you’ve known your friend for 30 years, we can take it as believable then? Oh wait, you continue by stating, “not neccessarily the reality/truth”.

If it takes you hours to fact check a silly comment, then I agree you should not waste your time.

As for my daughter, I chose to share something that actually happened today, I don’t embellish like your friend of 30 years, but your exaggeration is rather humorous in it’s fatuousness.

  • aegiszx

Been saying all along that if the PP does not improve, Cameron will be on the move. No way is that % acceptable. Not in this league. And especially not after 3 seasons.

dunno if Eugene Melnyk will approve Cameron’s removal so easily. may cost him all the savings he is making on the coaching staff as he is probably still paying cameron OHL coaching money.

  • hq8

i think the faceoff trouble is going to be a sore spot going forward. need a guy who can win them clean and solid outside of Spezz and Smith. I hear Manny Malhotra is looking for a contract.

    • GoSensGoEh

Grant is a decent faceoff guy, and could center the 4th line. Spezza could do with some reduced minutes until he is 100%.

      MacArthur Turris Ryan
      Michalek Spezza Pageau
      Greening Smith Condra
      Conacher Grant Neil

  • Miguel

what a brutal 2 games in SJ and Anh.
    there are so many negatives:
    the Defence – Phillips, 65, 2
the Forwards – MM9, Greening, Spezza, Pageau
this not at all the same team we saw last year.
Yes the West may be better, but they did not play the same pesky Sens from last year.
They looked slow, one step behind all game.
MM9 is hurting that top line, if you want to make a statement dont sit your fourth liner, maybe a seat for MM9 or Phillips will end the message, b/c IMO, they too contributed to the poor play just as much as Pageau.
Granted the sky is falling is a bit dramatic, hoverver if they were not totally embarrassed by the opposition on the weekend, we Sens fans are knowledgable enough to handle tough losses, but those two losses we were completely outclassed.

    • Engin Sezerman

Why do you always rag on Phillips? It’s getting really annoying. Did ever occur to that maybe it’s the scrubs he’s always paired with that making him look bad.

      • Miguel

        because he sucks!!!
his best days are way behind him… Luke Richardson was playing better than him when he retired…. Jason Smith was playing better than him when he retired. He has been a great soldier, but even the great one knew when it was time… and it is time for Phillips IMO only

  • hq8

kk, so in the Sergei Gonchar vs PW46 race:
    the gonch: 4 gms , 1 pt, MINUS 3
    PW46: 5 gms, 3 pts, PLUS 1.
    other telling stats:
    1. as said before: sens really suck at faceoffs outside of spezz and smith:
1a. pageau has taken 52 faceoffs. in which he has lost ALL SHORT HANDED FACEOFFS TAKEN. DaCosta, same story on even strength. surprisingly, pageau took a total of 82 faceoffs last season (9GP) and struck a 48.8% rate – which means he has clearly regressed and management fell for the amazing #s from last season.
1b. on the contrary, zibanejad last year finished with a FO% of 46.4 over 42GP. Not bad for a 19/20 yr old serving ad-hoc duty on a depleted roster. JOB and Regin had similar #s.
    2. sens are DEAD LAST in power play opportunities in the league with 12 over 5 GP and are not making the most of it when they get one with only 2 PPG to show – p.s. both were Bobby Ryan markers.
    3. sens are midpack in PK%, but thats skewed because of the ridiculous # of penalties we take.
    4. 4th highest in number of penalties taken. one good news, PHX is right up there with us in it so the PP should get oiled today one way or the other.
    5. midpack (15th) in ES goals against.
    6. 19th in ES goals for.
    7. the top 3 most undisciplined senators have been – in order – Chris Neil, Zack Smith and Jason Spezza. I think the last two names to be leading the team in PIM is unacceptable given their FO% abilities and hence their PK roles. Spezza is also unacceptable as he is the captain. Matt Kassian has yet to take a penalty. *facepalm.
so some interesting, bad trends. need to be nipped in the bud before its too long. tonight is another chance to show that the last two road losses, particularly the last one in anaheim was a complete fluke. out of all the sens losses, the one last night had the most disturbing signs as they were decidedly blown out of the game.

    • Sandy

A lot of these young players have not played a West coast team. They are so big at centre.. Pageau & DaCosta are way overmatched…

  • T K

Apparently, Pronger is officially never coming back. Not that I wish him ill but it’s a karmic irony that he was sidelined by the same injury that he inflicted to others. Maybe he’ll retire to the same hockey old folks home as Dean McAmmond

  • timic

I seriously don’t know why Pageau has not bee tried on wing. I like apostle’s lines:

    Michalek – Spezza – Ryan
    MacA – Turris – Conacher
    Greening – Zbad – Pageau
    Condra – Smith – Neil

However, we have two awesome goalies right now. Screw it. I want this:

Anderson and Smith to Edmonton for Yakupov. Hell, throw in SDC if they want!

    Michalek – Spezza – Ryan
    MacA – Turris – Conacher
    Greening – Zbad – Yakupov
    Condra – O’Brian- Neil

Take Biron off waivers to back up Lehner.

    That was fun!

    • Hax

No offense, but I wouldn’t touch Yak right now. His comments were not good. Sure he’s young and maybe it’s a Turris situation … or maybe he’s the next Filatov. No way would I give up one of our goalies for a guy that questionable.

      • Tooks

He said he wasnt happy, if he was happy sitting then yeah I wouldnt want him either. Eakins is a terrible coach, he wont last 1 season in EDM.

We have plenty of questionable guys, no harm in adding one that proved he can score when put in better situations, as Maclean does. I dont see Yak doing well in Ottawa to be honest, our style is too confining, we burden almost all of our players to play defensively sound. Yak was at his best last year in an offense that did not require him to play as much D. Now he has to hit, play better D and forecheck for Eakins who has no clue what he’s doing.

        • boom

“I dont see Yak doing well in Ottawa to be honest, our style is too confining, we burden almost all of our players to play defensively sound”
Wow, the poor guys! What are the coaches thinking, asking the players to play well defensively? Never win that way, eh Tooks?

I don’t usually resort to sarcasm. but after coming to your defense numerous times lately, that is the stupidest thimg i have ever seen from you. From all accounts, Yakupov is a spoiled punk, and yet, you blame the coach.
          You’re better than that.

          • Tooks

All of the best goalscorers dont play D, or much of it. check yourself before you wreck yourself.

You think Stamkos, Ovie, Nash, Neal, Malkin, etc, are burdened with defensive responsabilites. No they have free roam on offense basically and thats what Yak had last year. Now Eakins thinks he can change the culture of high scoring, high tempo game in EDM to a defense first, 2 way checking game. Aint gonna happen.

    • Tooks

They would probably want a mature goalie who’s had success in the playoffs, hence Anderson and since Lehner is our future, keep em and get a vet goalie off waivers, a la Biron.

Anderson, Da Costa, Gryba in return for Yakupov. Play him beside Turris and CMac and watch him go!!

      • Tony Gallo

EDM wouldnt touch Da Costa (too small – they want to get bigger) would have to give Smith

  • Andrews Theory

same plan as last year, same plan as the year before that. Get better every week. Peek at the end of the season.
one gripe i will throw out. I didnt agree with Neil getting the A and he’s done nothing to correct my view. bad choice in my opinion.
Ultimately the leaders on this team need to step up and show the way.
swapping Pajeau for Zibanejad does not change/fix this issue.
I’m going to continue to chalk this up to to a rough start on the road. Legs aren’t there right now and that’s been killing them.

  • MethotToMyMadness

Spezza is just looking out of place right now. Remember guys, he’s been out for a long time, it takes games to get that back. He will resurface, so long as he really is healthy.

I agree that Turris is looking much sharper this year. Is he ready for 1st C duties, not just yet. He can fill in though, we’ve seen that. But Turris is still best when playing in the 2C position.

From the get go, Mac and Turris have shown great chemistry with and without the puck. Adding Ryan on that line was nice to see and really opened up the ice. Leave Spezza with 9MM and try adjusting Ryan back and forth. Regardless of what line Ryan is on, he’ll get his opportunities, cause the 2nd line is doing great.

But if we want to win games, we need to get consistent play from both the 1st and 2nd lines, along with some chip ins from the 3rd and 4th. I should also include better Defensive zone coverage, cause being out-shot by 25 shots a game blows goats.

  • thepez

This is the kind of start that worried me as a Sens fan. Ever since July 5th all we heard from fans, media and other hockey people was how great this team was going to be. 2 years ago it was about a 3 year plan and all of this summer we heard and talked about a Stanley Cup contender. Now 5 games in people are questioning everything about this team. The expectations for this team were so high, they were almost in a no win situation. Anyhow, hopefully they can get the two points tonight, which would give them a split on the road, which if you think about, a 500 record on the road is quite good and usually gets you in the playoffs. And for the record, Ottawa’s road record last year was 10-11-3. 23 out of a possible 48 points, 1 point under 500.

    • hq8

i think you nailed it about the expectations being high. but they werent unfair either – why else would BM trade for Ryan but to get into contender status

      • thepez

Obviously Ryan was a great acquisition, however we can’t underestimate the loss of Alfie and Gonchar. The veteran leadership these two guys brought was huge. Plus the forwards and d-men who were real good last year when Spezza, Michalek and EK65 were gone, have been too soft in my opinion.
Sounds like Kassian is in tonight, not sure what that will do but would not be surprised to here that Pageau or DaCosta will be a healthy scratch.

        • Sandy

And a cheap and broke Owner..

  • Dan Hill

Win this one and we’re back to 500
this is no time to panic

    • FBP

Can I panic if we lose?

      • Dan Hill

        if you want
        but it’s a long season
remember MacStache in his first year ?
3 losses to start the season ?
we’ll be ok And the Leafs will return to earth
        just like every other November

        • FBP

I was just thinking that yesterday. We started out Macs first year in a brutal way. The team held a players only meeting and it turned around. Wonder if we’ll get another players only meeting if we lose this morning?

  • Tooks

Sweet Da Costa out. Lines as per Double Chin G…
    MM9 Spezza Ryan
    CMac Turris CC89
    Greening Smith Neil
    Kassian Pageau Condra

No change in the top 6, odd.

  • Phil.

Toronto has not been playing well, but they’re on top. Sens have not been playing well and are closer to the bottom. The difference is a few bounces and the occasional key save. Those things even out over the season.

    • Tooks

Leafs find ways to win, the top 6 are producing and this time around they found a solid goalie in Bernier. They came back to win vs us and vs EDM. They will hit a stretch of hard games, like every team does but this aint the same old Leafs, not under Carlyle, he wot have it!

      • Phil.

Yes, they are an improved team. Right now however they are not playing well, just getting enough to get away with the win. Neither of the 2 games you mentioned were convincing wins. Not taking the 4 points from them, but if the playoffs started tomorrow, I wouldn’t pick the Leafs.

    • Sandy

Look at Toronto’s schedule to date and see why they are where they are. A couple of tougher games.. the rest against some non-playoff teams…

      • Tooks

They will get the same west coast trip down the road and we will get the softer sched later. All comes out to the same. Actually its better to get the road trip now and out of the way. We shouldnt be complaining about scheduling.

  • Sandy

3rd game in 4 nights.. and when they get home it will be 4 games in 6 nights…
Hoping and praying for a win. One of those Coyote wins in their streak was against Philly… so does that really count?
The Sens usually don’t do well on this US west coast trip and to come out of it at .500 will be a win-win in my books..
The Devils then the Oilers at home.. Then the Wings on the road and home to San Jose, Anaheim and the Blackhawks.

Could it get worse before it gets better? If the Sens could win in Phoenix and home against the Devils & Oilers — then they should be fine.. But those last 3 home games in the month of Oct are going to be extremely tough.

This is a BRUTAL month playing some of the best teams in the West… We can say after this month — that is the last of SJ and Ana this season…

    • Tooks

Every team goes through it Sandy, the NHL is not out to get the little Ottawa Senators :P

I’m not sure about you or if anyone played any type of hockey where you had back to back games or 4 in 6 nights. I have and I loved them, keeps your adrenaline going, no time off to let the rust or pain settle in, no stiffness.

Of course this was CJHL and far from the NHL intensity but thats just how I felt.

      • boom

Yeah, we can’t have it both ways – fans would complain about too many days between games (start of season) and now we complain about too many games over a short period. Good teams overcome these so-called issues. Bad teams don’t.

      • Sandy

Not saying the NHL is out to get the Sens… but it’s just as the schedule is it’s a very tough month compared to teams like the Leafs go through this season.
It will all even out in the end… but fans panic when the see the Leafs doing so good and the Sens struggling so bad. They seem to ignore the teams each one is playing against and that contributes to where the standings are right now..
The schedule for the Sens was so quirky in the beginning with so few games and so many days off… They could have used an extra day inbetween Phoenix & home.. given it’s 3 time zones coming back and only 1 day inbetween…

  • jtf927

i say give some of those young players a try if things don’t go well in phoenix. i think we need to get back to hard working team we were last year and the season before. also, i would think about packaging dacosta and pageau for a proven top 9 forward.

  • Zachpraisetheswedes

I’ve been very disappointed in the sens so far. I was expecting a hard working team with tons of skill. That skill is definitely evident but the effort is not. Like PMac said, we’ve seemed to have lost our identity.

I’m not worried about the top 6 or the top 4 Dmen. They could be better but I think it’s just a matter of time for those groups. What I’m worried about is the bottom 6 and bottom D pairing.

Last year we had one of the best bottom 6′s in the league. I was expecting the same this year. What happened is, we expected Pageau to be the player he was in playoffs when realistically it wasn’t possible. He still has lots of development to do. He’s been pretty much invisible and should be sent down. I really believe OBrien can do a much better job in that role at this point in time.

Some people chirp DaCosta but i actually think he’s done exactly what PMac wanted from him. He kept him up because he wanted for him to bring an offensive element to the bottom 6. He’s done just that. No, he hasn’t put up numbers yet but he has had a number of chances where Neil Smith and Kassian otherwise wouldn’t have.

As for Zibanejad. Its sucks not seeing him play but I really believe this is a good move for him. He hasn’t h a chance to play in an offensive role in years now. He needs to develop that side of his game. It’s pretty hilarious some people think this is a money thing.

    • Sandy

They having been dictating their game.. they are just chasing the other teams.
The Sens have never done very well in the LA, SJ & Ana trip. That’s nothing new.
The Sens were very tough to play against last season, but they never faced the Western teams…
      The west is tough.
As well as the Sens.. going to watch SJ & St. Louis.. That will be a great game…

  • Terry

It is tough to stomach when I know so many Flames or Maple Laffs fans. I know that Ottawa is hitting the Game #6 mark tonight, very early in a long season. Calgary is a tough spot to be a SensFan, either SportsNet West or TSN.

To tonight’s game, I think that after the comments PM made after Anaheim that they team probably didn’t have the most pleasant trip to Phoenix. It is time for Spezza to show why the picked him as ” C ” and calm the team down. Phillips and Neil as well. Get the young team to play a 60 min, 2 way game. STAY OUT OF THE BOX and not leave Andy out to dry. I would prefer Kassian up to the Smith Neil line but I guess MK doesn’t typically play alot of minutes.

Its not panic time yet, but it would be nice to end a long road trip on a positive note before the Home Opener. This team has the talent to compete in a tough division, and once the road smooths out everyone will see that.

Also, the Maple Laffs are in for an awakening the next time they play.

    My Two Cents!! Go Senators11

    • Tooks

They play tonight vs Wild at ACC or did you mean vs us?

      • Terry

I always cheer for the team playing Toronto to pulverize them, but I think Ottawa should be clicking when the next Battle of Ontario occurs, and if history repeats itself, the wheels should start falling of The Leafs.

        • Tooks

Sure IF they had Wilson coaching…

        • Sandy

The Wild are playing their AHL goaltender in Toronto tonight.. The Leafs are capable of putting a lot of pucks in the net.

Their issue is their defense gives up the puck a lot..

  • Miguel

agreed that most of us were aware that this would be a tough road trip to start the season. And if we would have been asked before the trip if we go .500 would we take it? and most of us would be happy.
So if we win tonight, the ship will be righted for the home opener on Thursday.
if we lose, it will hit the fan, and there will some changes for Thursday.
But again, I do not want a 4th line change ie SDC going down… this is no big deal,
the real shake up will be fixing the #1 line and getting MM9 out of there, and perhaps a seat to Phillips so he can watch a game from the stands.
As many have noted his best games are behind him, and why on earth he is playing on the first PP unit, is outright stupidity… he has not played on the PP in 10 years, why would he be there now???

  • Zachpraisetheswedes

I’m not concerned about our top 6. I think people are way overreacting about this. For the first time in god knows how long we have 6 guys who legitamently belong there.

Conacher and MacArthur have both been skating well and creating opportunities. Turris looks a million times better in every way. Michalek, although still hated on here, no longer looks hurt and consistently gets chances in front of the net which is exactly what he should be doing. Spezza looks a tad slow but should be expected. He’s still elite and will start producing points soon, I have no doubt. Obviously Bobby is exactly what we’ve been missing for years. Hopefully he keeps it up.

Sure, we need to score more but I don’t think that’s where our concern should be. Comparing us to the elite teams we just played, it’s obvious we’re still not there yet. I thought we would be but clearly something is missing.

I honestly think it has more to do with pure hustle than anything else.

Our bottom 6 is no longer near impossible to play again’t. They seem to get out worked every shift. Greening looks awful. Pageau is nowhere near what he was in the playoffs. Smith looks lost out there and Neil isn’t being Neil.

The team needs to work and not rely on the skill we suddenly have

  • lbernier

I have to say I am impressed with how Corvo has been playing he has been a stud for us making the simple and more importantly the right plays, he should not be scratched tonight. Erik Karlsson better calm down and play his game, he is all over the ice but not being as effective he is forcing plays that is not his game. He needs time though as he never played that much last year and coming off a huge injury I guess, but his game should be coming back to him by now, I expect a big night from him 3 point game (1G, 2A) and 28-29 minutes of ice time. HE IS DUE!

  • lbernier

Thumbs up if Bobby Ryan extends his goal scoring streak to 4 games tonight, Thumbs down if it comes to an end tonight. I say he wont get a goal tonight, I say he gets 2!

  • Zachpraisetheswedes

    I love Bobby!

He brings an element of excitement that none of our other forwards can or maybe ever have. He’s one of very few players in this league that when he has the puck on his stick coming down the wing, you just get excited to see what he’s gonna try to pull.

I know people think we gave up too much for him but the simple fact is that it had to be done. Elite scorers are beyond rare. I still think we won the trade because the team who gets the best player always wins the trade. It’s much easier finding good role players than elite scorers. BMrrays job is much easier now. All he needs to do is find complimentary players to push us over the edge.

That said, I still wouldn’t mind seeing a big trade like Michalek, Puempel and 2015 1st for E. Kane

  • Bonus2McWalrus

TRADE Michalek while we can still get something for him! Seems he can do no wrong…. I don’t know what he did that Conacher, Pag & Condra didn’t. Yet the 3 I mentioned get benched for pretty well the majority of the whole 3rd??? Michalek looked fucking lost all weekend… I only remember one thing he did in both games… Took a penalty

I hate hate HATE the fact that coach thinks they should be glued to each others hip. Then he breaks up Spezz and Bobby… Sure Turry set up Bobby for one but for the most part thats all we got. Bobby & Spezz should be glued to eachother.

    CC89 – Spezz – Bobby Duuuuhhhhhhhhh!

The Ducks game was by far the most difficult Paul MacLean coached regular season game I ever watched!

    • Phil.

Michalek has scored some goals in the NHL. 22, 18, 35, 4 last few years for the Sens. Conacher scored 11 in 47g last year, 9 of which came with the Bolts. Not saying he can’t contribute but he not top line material.

      • Bonus2McWalrus

A big part of his 35 goals a few years ago was Karlsson. He probably scored about 10 of them on redirects or the puck simply hitting him from EK bombs.

Conacher is 23…. Michalek is 28, Conacher has a high ceiling and put up those numbers playing for the most part with St. Louis & Stammer,, not Lecavalier, Malone, Purcell or whoever.

Our version of ST. LOUISSTAMMER IS

Spezza Ryan.. Its a nofuckingbrainer! 9mm showed chemistry with Turry last year. So Michalek wouldn’t look out of place. And, IMO would be more effective still on the PP, still killing penalties, while playing on Line 2 with Turry and MacArthur.

    • Conor_smythe

Agree with you that Michalek and Spezza should be broken up. They have never played well together

I don’t think Conacher is the solution

      • Sandy

Michalek had 35 goals playing with Spezza. I would move Greening up. He has had good chemistry with Spezza & Michalek before.. and he is a big body that will go to the net and make room for the other 2.
        Ryan with Turris…

        • Jacques

I think Sprzza should sit till he’s one hundred percent. He wasn’t ready in the playoffs last year and he’s dragging this team down again. Supposed to play the tough minutes against the other teams best and we are getting killed.

  • Heisenberg

idk if anyone agrees, and im not making up excuses for our poor start, but wtf is the nhl thinking with this schedule. u know lets make a team in ontario go all the way to california and play 3 straight games there, then go to arizona to play a 6th straight road game to start the season. im not making excuses but some blame here is on the stupid schedule makers

    • Engin Sezerman

Some blame also has to go to people to who arrange the schedule and booking the events that go on at the CTC as well.

      • Heisenberg

true but isnt the ctc a hockey first venue? they can work around the nhl schedule
and its not like theres something at the ctc everyday

  • Conor_smythe

    Greening-Smith-Neil

finally a 3rd line that makes sense

  • NickofTime

Luckily for Pageau Phoenix doesn’t have quite as big a team as LA, Annahiem & SJ. BTW Chirp it’s back to back to back losses to all three California teams. Hopefully PM/BM come to their senses soon & send Pageau to Bingo & bring JOB back since they are paying him an NHL salary anyway. He is an excellent two way forward, very good on the PK & at faceoffs. He can contribute offensively from time to time & he is much bigger & stronger than Pageau/Da Costa & is able to compete at the NHL level. Now if I can only get rid of Condra, Da Costa & Conacher & replace them with Zibanejad, Stone & Grant. I wonder what BM could get in return for Corvo, Condra, Conacher & Da Costa?

We should get to see a potential trade deadline candidate in Vrbata tonight, Hemsky on Saturday & Fleischmann whenever Ottawa plays Florida. Interestingly all three are Czechs like Michalek. Do you suppose any of those three teams would take any of the four above for their potential trade deadline player? Would also like to pry Franson away from Toronto.

    • Bonus2McWalrus

lol That revolves around a deal I thought up of yesterday

      Straight up

      Michalek for Vrbata

9mm gets to finally play with his brother, both players contracts expire at seasons end. No risk really for both teams, and a change of scenery for both players, not that Vrbata needs it much, he’s off too a good start. Seems he has some issues with the Yotes though, might welcome a trade.

      Vrbata – Spezz – Ryan

  • spezzerman

When Mika Z comes back up, it won’t be because of the #freemika campaign. It will be because the guys who were hungrier at camp are starting to show that an adrenaline fueled playoff and a decent camp against other AHL’ers isnt enough to stay in the NHL. Pageau could be an NHLér but it was a lot to ask him to live up to the unrealistic expectations the fan base set upon him after his small sample size. DaCosta simply isnt an NHL player. He has the skill but that isnt enough. Not enough size, not enough smarts.

The message sent to Mika was hopefully received loud and clear but it shouldnt surprise anyone to allow 10-15 games be played before any changes are made. And its not like Mika being in Bingo over DACosta or Pageau is the reason the Sens are getting brutally outplayed. Our best players arent our best players and Mika isnt changing that on his own.

    • Sandy

I’ve mentioned previously in the post.. that trip to LA, SJ & Ana has never been a good one for the Sens.. They stayed close on the scoreboard in 2 of those games. The penalties hurt and were the difference in not getting more points..

  • Floridasensfan

you guys that are worried about the season 5 games in, are on crack.

    That is all

  • Tim

    Just an update…
Ceci with a slight groin pull sitting out practices.
Stone out 2 weeks with the shoulder injury but is out of the sling.
Friend of mine played in the charity golf tournament down here the other week and said Luke Richardson is an awesome individual and thinks Binghamton is an incredibly passionate and knowledgeable hockey town, and Thinks we have the best place in the AHL to defend home turf. We are luck to have him as coach he gets it…

  • SoCal

C’mon, we’re in mid-october! Let’s save the “must wins” until at least after Christmas….

    • Phil.

Don’t you get it, if the Sens lose tonight, Christmas is canceled!

  • Tim

    Miss the Klinkhammer….

    • spezzerman

He has done very well for himself the last few years in Phoenix, good to see.

  • hq8

nino neiderreiter is playing in a line with koivu and parise……he was traded for cal clutterbuck of all people.

  • hq8

i abhor the laffs lol….how did they get good while also screwing up over and over again.

  • karlssens

Trade Michalek talk already started… Here we go again!

Michalek scores 25 goals easy, and he is an awesome team player. He is adjusting to his post knee surgery and probably needs some time to get going. I for one hope we re-sign him, as 25 goal scorers don’t grow on trees and he seems to love to play here.

BTW, SC the website is acting funny on my phone.. cutting off text and lagging.

    • SensChirp

Yup. Working on it. Although the idea of the site not working for you during the game sounds kind of appealing :)

      • SensChirp

        Should be fixed now :)

      • karlssens

C’mon SC I’m a regular, why’d you have to go there :p? Dick!

    • Bonus2McWalrus

He’s another knee injury away from maybe having to call it quits… he goes hot and cold and is too inconsistent to be stealing top line minutes from someone who could contribute more, you can already see reluctance when he goes into the corners.

If there are players who are going to be demoted and reprimanded (so to speak) for lack of production and work ethic why does 9mm get the silver spoon?

IMO tonight, or this past weekend he should have been put on line 2 to go to show, there are no free rides, you have to work your ass off, you have to at least stand out, and most importantly YOU HAVE TO CONTRIBUTE playing top line minutes. Maybe scoring the game tying goal against LA saved his ass…

There should have at least been auditions in training camp to see who plays with Spezz and Bobby. But for whatever reason Michalek gets it given to him with a big pink bow, before Bobby even gets to town.

If you ask me he hasn’t earned it, and Michalek’s play thus far hasn’t warranted still playing on line 1 with Bobby n Spezz, especially considering the line juggling the past few games

  • hq8

so pageau plays again today…..just for comparison sakes:
all regular PHX centremen for today’s game are above 50%, with vermette at 60%.

the sens make the most mind boggling, frustrating roster and lineup decisions sometimes.

for people saying to trade michalek: exactly who is there to fill up his spot on the team and what has the suggested replacement done up till now to earn it.

    • karlssens

Maybe I’m biased because I have a signed Michalek jersey and I’ve met the guy a few times, but I actually like him on this team. Guarentee once he has a moment of brilliance everyone will be on bandwagon again. i.e. Pittsburgh goal

  • karlssens

    Prediction: 4-3 Sens..

Turris, Conacher, Ryan, Karlsson. Let’s get a W boys!! Or at least play hard!

  • Brianmichille Dablo Cabaltera-

    Buffalo – Wings
    Toronto – MacArthur
    Los Angeles – Corvo
    San Jose – Michalek
    Anaheim – Ryan
    Phoenix – Turris

  • SensChirp

Had some issues with the mobile version of the site earlier but should be fine now.

Try clearing browser cache if it still seems off.

  • Bonus2McWalrus

Hey Chirp, Would it make sense I had to completely redo an account?

My Bonus2MacLean wasn’t working nor was the site recognizing my email

    • SensChirp

Haven’t heard that from anyone else. A new account was required on the new site if that’s what you mean.

      • Bonus2McWalrus

Gotcha, New site = all new accounts

  • karlssens

Really seems like EDM are looking for a Tender.. Wonder what we would get for Anderson? I think a first or a top 6 player has to be the demand.. He’s a top goalie in the NHL. Potentially pry Yakupov away? Would look awesome beside Turris and Macarthur !

    • hq8

i dont see why people want to trade pieces off this team already. this is where the 5 games in argument is the best rebuttal lol

      • karlssens

But Anderson really hasn’t been needed the last year or two. Many league executives believe that Lehner is ready. Anderson is our only real asset at this point, we can use him to address an immediate need. EDM would benefit greatly from Anderson.

        • hq8

what sort of opinion is that – how have we not needed anderson the last two years? yea lehner is ready, but Andy is a sitting starter who has been important in getting us to the playoffs twice.
remember the NYR series where he stood on his head against lundqvist to go to gm7?

          • karlssens

We have had Lehner NHL ready for the last two years.. He is a hell of a goalie, and has yet to be pulled in an nhl game, or let in over 4 goals. Most fans would agree that Anderson is very much tradeable.

          • hq8

i dont think there is that much support for an anderson trade to edmonton. its too soon and if a deep run is what the sens want this season, its best to keep the double tandem we have right now.

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Amazing perspective, Chirp. A win tonight would be great, and if you really look at it, 2-2-2 coming back home after a long road trip really doesn’t look that bad.

Like I said the other night, this team WILL right the ship. Mac is too good of a coach, and these players are too talented not to.

Now I’m not really sure why Corvo is scratched. Hoping Gryba has the best of luck tonight, but [and I know this may not be a popular opinion among many] I really think Corvo’s probably been our best D so far this early season.

    That sounded wierd :S

    GSG.

    • karlssens

Corvo has been a pleasant surprise… Phillips unfortunately not so much!

  • GoSensGoEh

    Enjoy the game everyone!!

    BBL

  • Zorav

So are just going to keep on playing phillips regardless? I get that he’s being paid 3 mil and we have to get his value’s worth , but If anything having him play (albeit 3rd paring mins) has hurt the on-ice value. As for veteran leadership, leading by example is an important aspect of it which frankly he hasn’t done.

    • karlssens

On the bright side, this is his last season on the roster (hopefully)..

  • karlssens

GO SENS GO. Out of respect for Chirp and the posters I will save all my comments for intermissions haha.. will probably weed out a lot of my stupidity.

    • Jacques

It’s ok I usually agree with you! Especially when it involves Condra.

    • SensChirp

Haha should be a busy intermission.

      • karlssens

        Damn straight ;)

  • Robert Cyr

Just hope our Sens play very well, and secure a win, after 4 straight
losses. Nice to come home at 2-2-2, instead of 1-3-2.

    GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Snoopy Senior

  • H POTTER

Really nice start. I love the Ryan Turris Mc line

  • H POTTER

Wow wow wow what a shift..i feel a change in the wind

  • Michenator

BS, penalty. I feel like providing play by play…

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Strong game from Gryba so far

    • Jacques

Gryba over Corvo and Phillips any day of the week.

  • karlssens

I can’t help but post that that Turris line is unbelievable..

  • Jacques

Painful watching Spezza, this guy is not right at all. A shadow of his former self.

    • Miguel

definitely you did not have the cyrstal ball handy when you posted this :)

  • Conor_smythe

Brutal Reffing. Turris was the outside man heading towards the puck. Should have been interference against phx

    • Aaron 2.0

I thought the same as you, but when they showed the replay from 2nd camera (from behind the play), he deserved the holding call. I don’t understand the 1st call though. How could you tell if Turris would have interfered. Doan takes him into Smith.

  • H POTTER

These guys are Nhl skaters. Turris can skate, why does he need to take those holding penalties like no one will see him

  • Zorav

The artillery against our goalies only starts when we turn the puck over like phillips keeps on doing almost every other shift… :(, please please stop having a blind eye towards #4, management.

    • Conor_smythe

I don’t think they’re blind to it. He’s playing on the 3rd pairing. Expect a trade as soon as he submits his list of teams in January

      • jasonontheoldsenschirp

He’s actually playing with Karl on the top pairing.

        • SensChirp

For the first shift of the game plus a power play shift only. Despite was Dean and Dennis will have you believe.

          • jasonontheoldsenschirp

            Back together

  • karlssens

    0-0, that’s a positive lol!

    • SensChirp

A much better effort all around.

      • yannrock

Night and day difference in the compete level

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

good period from the Sens I liked what I saw. good baby steps towards playing the way we can play.

  • SensFanInMTL

Welp, at least it’s still 0-0. Coach has to sit these guys and tell them to go easy with the damn turnovers. It’s not even just Spezza.

  • KJ-Sens

    Doan 2 – Turris 0

  • Mat

It’ll be a battle of wills tonight. Two teams at the tail end of multiple road games. So far, I like what I see from Ottawa. Need to keep applying pressure though.

This cliche heavy post brought to you by Alarm Force (which is listed on the TSX btw..)

  • SensFanInMTL

Poor Da Costa. Win or lose, he may very well never suit up for us ever again.

    • Mat

Its never a good sign when you are being benched in exchange for MAtt Kassian… That being said, I think he’ll do marvellous centering the top line in Bingo.

  • hq8

so my new gripe or old one: the sens miss the net shot curse!!!

the first period looked good. now lets make mike smith normal, please and thank you.

  • Mat

    fuuuuuuuck

  • SensFanInMTL

    Unintentional assist.

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

I want to see more from Spezz

  • SensFanInMTL

Not saying we’re gonna lose but by Thursday if the winless Devils come to town and beat us, there will need to be a major shake up.

  • Zorav

    and it begins…

  • karlssens

Not looking good boys.. Can’t catch a break.

  • H POTTER

    Incroyable

  • SensFanInMTL

Alright time for fickle mode I cannot take this much more.

    #FreeMika #Now #ThisIsNotWorkingAnymore #PhuckThis #FreeMika-pt2.

  • karlssens

If they loose to the Coyotes, something needs to happen..

    • SensChirp

Yes. A home game. (And maybe a call up)

      • karlssens

Or a trade to shake things up :p

      • hq8

i dont know how a callup and a home game will fix the sens allowing goals off of consecutive faceoffs with guys like turris and spezza on the ice. i mean, this is getting just downright ugly. i do blame andy for both goals partially. bad rebound on the first and caught watching on the second.

  • hq8

i said it before the game : faceoffs. i just didnt know that we could allow goals even after winning faceoffs with Spezza AND Turris.

    • Zorav

lol, it’s really just been that bad.

  • SensFanInMTL

We can’t finish, we cause major turnovers, our top line has been divided when it was assumed they would stick together. Phuck man. Just win the phuckin game.

  • MikeS

Meh…..Ill get worried if the slide continues at home. This defensive play is very concerning though

  • Michenator

I feel like Bobby Ryan and Kyle Turris are the only ones making me at all excited these past 3 games…

    • MikeS

I give spezza a pass for the next few games. But the defense looks really bad

  • karlssens

    Atta boy Spezz

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

    That was all Wiercioch

    • MikeS

Weircioch has been a pleasant surprise this year

  • karlssens

Now let’s go get a couple more!!

  • H POTTER

    Phillips…brutal

    • SensFanInMTL

Wonder if he could fetch us a 1st rounder at the deadline…

      • karlssens

I wish.. I would much rather Boroweicki back there..

    • karlssens

It’s getting to the point where he just isn’t an NHL defensemen anymore

    • jasonontheoldsenschirp

Ya I’m usually the one to stick up for the ol Rig but my golly the man’s been bad.

  • SensFanInMTL

Bout time tabarnak de sacrament de calisse.

    That was all Wiercioch there.

    • Conor_smythe

Spezza started the play by stealing the puck… No?

      • SensFanInMTL

        No.

        • SensChirp

          Yep. Yep he did.

  • KJ-Sens

    Spezza!

  • Aaron 2.0

Alright. Back in it. The team needs to start believing in order to win.

  • MikeS

    the refs :’(

  • Colin

4 officials failed to see that? Utter bullshit!

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

    My goodness. Blatant high stick.

  • Michenator

    WHAT THE EFFING EFF!!!! Wow…..

    • Michenator

Should be 4 but it’s 0….. makes sense.

  • Colin

    …and the makeup call

  • karlssens

    Get Neil off the pp

  • Aaron 2.0

Wow – Refs just missed a 4 minute penalty. Unacceptable. Here comes the makeup call. Brutal. Wonder if we’ll lose Conacher for the rest of the game…

    • MikeS

We wont but he will get stiches

      • Aaron 2.0

Yeah, given how he went down, and how he was moving his legs, I thought it would be something much deeper. Glad to see him back.

  • MikeS

Doesnt really matter…our pp sucks bad….

    • SensChirp

Damn good chance at the end of it. Great stop by Smith.

  • karlssens

Hope we get another makeup call to make up for the lost 2 min..

    • MikeS

More likely phoenix gets a free pp to makeup for the fact that the sens got a pp

  • karlssens

    Blatant hook on Weircioch..

  • karlssens

This Smith line is not a third line.. They are fourth.. Zibby should be centering Condra and Greening for the third line IMO

    • jasonontheoldsenschirp

      THANK YOU.

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

    I have a concern, guys.

In a system stacked with a plethora of Centres. Zack Smith is our third line centre.

    Discuss.

    • karlssens

Neil and Smith are 4th liners at best.. with Kassian sitting..

    • hq8

can you list these centers that makes our system “stacked with centers”?
it was on paper before this season, but based on this 6 game performance, its not stacked, its actually all of a sudden lacking:
pageau is now normal again – not ready yet, SDC is a misfit, JOB – is in a mysterious Paul Maclean blackhole, Zib – apparently he slumped, Lazar – still some time to go.
sens actually are now short on centers all of a sudden. Smith is 3C because of his respectable faceoff numbers. Pageau took the job from Zibanejad and lost it to Zack Smith – i think that sequence explains very well what kind of bonehead decision sens management made when plugging Zibanejad down to Bingo.

  • karlssens

They are playing like they did in the Heartsburgh era.. very little offence being displayed. Need to get a few more goals boys!

    • MikeS

On Pace for 30 shots to 18. They should win if they keep it up.

    • H POTTER

      Nooooooo, dont mention his name..lololol

  • SensFanInMTL

Let’s just get out of the west coast and never look back until next trip…

    • karlssens

Still not very promising… need to beat a team in the west to win the cup!

      • SensFanInMTL

I believe we are not quite Cup hungry just yet. The turnovers are simply killing us and we absolutely cannot go anywhere with all them turnovers. They are becoming blatant now and very frustrating to watch.

    • H POTTER

Lol, indeed. Man, not only do we need to win tonight but we need like a 7-2-1 record for our next 10 games after this ridiculous west coast trip to start the season

  • H POTTER

Anybody else sick in the stomach to see the freakin Leafs winning and winning..damn

    • SensFanInMTL

      Yeah, c’est fif en esti.

    • Colin

It’s October and the Leafs are teasing their fans as usual.

    • T K

it won’t last. wait til they play boston, detroit or go to california

  • hq8

i think Bryan Murray should take a very very hard look at Manny Malhotra and sign him. this team needs veteran presence and faceoff efficiency down the middle. the sens are self-destructing their own system with their faceoff shittiness.

  • SensFanInMTL

On a sidenote, Dredger announced (and most of you have probably heard by now) how desperate the Oilers are in obtaining a # 1 goalie. I guess they believe their forwards are ready and between the pipes looks like a major concern. Everything from Miller in Buffalo to Elliott in St. Louis to Hiller in Anaheim. I didn’t doubt the earlier poster on here about them phoning us for Lehner.

    • karlssens

Lehner will definitely not be moved though

      • yannrock

        I really hope not!

  • hq8

    faceoff numbers through two periods:
    spezz: 53%
    turris: 31%
    z. smith: 11% – this is shocking as he is supposed to be 2nd best on team
pageau: 17% (with only 5:06 TOI through 2) – it still puzzles me why he got played today and not SDC.

just what is going on with this team………

    • yannrock

They played better. Just some bad luck. Although faceoffs need to improve.

It’s a step in the right direction compare to previous games.

  • karlssens

I am not too worried as we have the people in the system to solve the errors.. But I think its fact at this point that Pageau needs time in the AHL.

    • yannrock

Either that or practice his faceoffs.

  • MikeS

    YESSS

  • MikeS

Spezza with a huge night for my pool :)

    • Aaron 2.0

Me too. Huge break there! Time to seize on some good fortune.

  • MikeS

Captain coming up big in game which many are already calling a must win

  • T K

and now, the early pressure starts to pay off

  • MikeS

Just win this one and everyone should be fine with .500 record on a tough road trip

  • MikeS

    HATTY

  • T K

    hat trick!

  • H POTTER

    Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • KJ-Sens

    Spezza again!

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

    Wow. Spezza.

  • yannrock

    Yes!! Way to go Captain!

  • H POTTER

I guess Murray ‘s’ threats have the guys coming in and playing good for once, lol

  • T K

if i was a Yotes fan, i’d be pissed at that goal. their player gets an elbow to the head, then a penalty , then a goal against. glad to be a sens fan!

    • MikeS

      You think its suspendable?

      • H POTTER

I hate to say maybe…be he has no priors

        • MikeS

Looked like shoulder to chest to me but they only showed it once

      • T K

don’t know. need to see the slow mo replay

        • T K

they both may have been falling

  • H POTTER

    Scarmmmmmmmmmmmmble, lmao…classic

  • Millennium

Well so far I like the swap of Ryan and Conacher.

    • SensChirp

Can’t help but think of the three line depth the team could have with Zibanejad up here and playing well at 3LC.

  • Aaron 2.0

All of a sudden Spezza is looking a lot more like his old self. Lets hope his early struggles were just dealing with some confidence issues after coming back from injury and accepting a larger role as captain.

  • T K

sens need to keep pushing offensively

  • Aaron 2.0

When did Gryba learn to skate like that.

    • MikeS

He has been making crazy moves with the puck. If only he learned how to pass

  • karlssens

Just talking to some EDM fans on the buzz, and it seems like most of them would be willing to part with their first/second + Smid (depending on the poster) for Andy. Is that a deal you make?

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

    penalties will doom us….

  • T K

Andy will lead us to the land of milk and honey

  • karlssens

    Thanks Philly

  • H POTTER

    Thank you Phillips

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

    Penalties

  • H POTTER

And to think he wanted to be da Captain..idiot

  • T K

i don’t find that the holding / interference calls have been equitably called. Doan has been getting away with murder

  • aegiszx

LOL these refs tonight are a joke. God damn. I hate west coast trips.

  • karlssens

    Please just get two points..

  • KJ-Sens

I know this matters not, but there were two high sticking penalties uncalled which may have made a difference

  • T K

    one down, one to go

  • MikeS

They should play super risky in OT. They always lose shootouts with Andy in net

    • T K

nowhere near as bad as Gerber or Elliott

      • MikeS

Mind you vs phoenix maybe we can just outscore them..LOL

    • H POTTER

      Lmao

  • karlssens

LMAO that was a BONEHEAD pass!

  • H POTTER

    Risky enouvh..hahahah

  • MikeS

    WHAT A PASS

  • T K

    wooooooohoooooooo

  • H POTTER

    Whatttttttttttttttttttttttttttt ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • karlssens

    BTW… I guessed 4-3. Do I win anything?

  • Michenator

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  • MikeS

LOL potvin saying conacher number 1 star. Spezza????

  • karlssens

    Went .500, good job boys!

  • H POTTER

    Good night everyone.

  • jasonontheoldsenschirp

    Marc Methot’s pass……………

    • Michenator

      so methotical?!?!!!?

  • Colin

6 of 12 points on the road to start the season. For a team that is notoriously bad on the road, they are going home in pretty good shape.

    • Michenator

Notoriously bad on the west coast road…

      • Colin

Well, the Senators only have 1 season since 2007/08 that they were over .500 on the road. Looking good so far this year!

  • SensFanInMTL

That blind Spezza pass. He will never get that off him. Turnovers from start to finish. Let’s regroup and head home. Nice hatty nonetheless, Captain. Andy bailing us at the right time. Little buddy Conacher has the heart of a freakin warrior. Love that kid to death. I can sleep happier now. Way to keep it at .500 boys.

    Goodnight.

    • SensChirp

He scored three goals for cryin’ out loud haha

      • SensFanInMTL

I did tip my hat off to him though. You did see that pass to the other team in the dying minutes that Andy bailed him out though yeah?

        • SensChirp

I did. But I always feel like a fan of a team should focus on the positives in times when something positive just happened. And in the case of Spezza, you chose to highlight one errant pass on a night where he single-handedly kept them in the hockey game.

          Seems silly to me.

          • SensFanInMTL

It almost cost us the game though. Remember 2010 playoffs? Team success is greater than personal success but yeah, he did provide almost the entire offense. He happens to also be my favourite in the entire squad.

          • SensChirp

No need for us to have the Spezza debate because if he’s your favourite player, you know what the positives are. Always has been, always will be a high risk/high reward hockey player.

          • SensFanInMTL

I always do what I can to snatch him up in Fantasy Mode in Be A GM. Now with difficulty easy, I didn’t have to build my team and kept him all along!

          • hq8

dunno if the drop pass is as much spezza’s giveaway or more of the team not capitalizing on a sweet pass by not keeping up with play and seizing the opportunity. i think all top centermen make that type of pass but their unit partners are then also always looking for it. i think spezz would be less of the player he really is if he didnt make those creative plays. the team needs to adapt to his creativity and look for those passes. the d-man, if he could have just walked right into that pass could possibly one-time a destructive shot…….

          • SensFanInMTL

Sorry I meant turnovers from start to finish by the entire team. It may have sounded like I was singling him out.

          • SensChirp

That was what I read the first time through. Although I’ll admit, I missed the subtle kudos you gave him as well :)

  • hq8

    relief!!!!
of all the snake-bitten sens, i had been waiting to see the con-man pot one and it was a good one to win it too.
now lets iron out the kinks and get the Zbad back up.

  • SensChirp

Nice to see this fancy new comment section with some good vibes in it for once!

  • Aaron 2.0

Hopefully the win calms the team’s nerves. You can still see the panic and lack of confidence after Phoenix ties at 3-3. Glad the team stuck with it though. It’s an important lesson for this team. Anderson certainly did his part. The top 2 lines looked pretty good. Defense needs to get better. I hope we have the pieces back there.

  • yannrock

Good win! Very happy with the effort level tonight.

  • hq8

what a pass by methot too. i think he redeemed himself tonight in a big way. he has been solid pretty much every game for the sens ever since he first played for us. he was one of the main sens players who looked uncharacteristic in the lousy start. but what a pass to redeem it.

  • karlssens

Great win.. However this doesn’t change the fact that Da Costa and Pageau don’t belong in the NHL.. Time to bring up Zibby and someone else for the home opener!

    • SensChirp

Can’t imagine MacLean is content playing two of his forwards as little as Pageau and Kassian played tonight. I think we see Zibanejad on Thursday night.

      • Aaron 2.0

I think you have to be right with the way those first 6 games turned out. Zibby is a much more versatile player than the other options right now. With all the talk about him needing to learn to play wing in the off-season (due to the apparent logjam at centre), this first 6 games just made it very clear (to me) that he should stay at his natural spot at centre.

  • sprucesens

A solid win. Spezza played great obviously, and i really like having conacher on that line. He has the speed and drive to the net that was missing. And turris is such a great playmaker also, and has been playing lights out every night. Only makes sense to give him one of the best finishers in the league with Bobby Ryan. Gives us basically 2 first lines. I’m thinking pageau will be on a short leash, after seeing his low ice time the last couple games, and overall lack of any kind of production, or even chances.

My thoughts, send pageau down for 2nd line center time in AHL. Keep zibby down for a little while to build some offensive confidence. Play Da Costa as 3C with Smith as 4C. Either Da costa takes the ball and runs with it, or loses his place with the organization, and gets sent down, and we call zibby back up. Then DC either becomes a gamble as trade bait to teams with injuries or no C depth, or is a career AHL’r. Either way, we can figure it out best buy keeping zib down for a bit longer, and sending pageau down to dominate.

Good win tonight. Go sens go. Will be nice to have some more calls go our way, hopefully, at home.

    final faceoff stats:
spezz: 60% – thats more normal for him
turris – 48% – getting to 50%, so thats good
smith – 21% – dunno wth happened to him tonight
    pageau – 29% – still needs work

less bad penalties today, but still could be better (i.e. Phillips late in third)
big positive in getting spezza going – 5GP and 5 pts – PPG all the wayyyyy
conacher scoring was a long time coming and it feels good to see the kid score – hardest working sen

still need to get back to last years great defensive work. i think, and it may be harsh, but phillips needs to sit as 7th D and Corvo needs to play with Gryba.
    faceoffs still need improvement.

PMac asked about our identity after the ducks game, and maybe part of the identity is maybe that the sens are a slow-starting team over the first 10 games.

    • s3nsfan

Am I the only one that thinks (and don’t get me wrong, I like Chris Phillips) but has he looked lost or slow or disoriented.

      • Tooks

Yes he’s been atrocious, I mean just downright terrible.

  • Bonus2McWalrus

Safe to say that was the easiest first 2 goals of a game in Spezz’s NHL career! Spezza HAS to keep ripping that shot the second he gets time and space in the zone! looked like it nicked off something and changed direction a bit, but still… WOW!

Tsk Tsk Tsk Vermette,, I see he still likes to try and sneak it 5 hole on breakaways, after either a little series of dekes, or a leg kick fake. Worked the first 10 or so times. I remember saying if I seen him try to do it in the shootout one more time I was going to go postal on something!

Lol Ribeiro looked like he was going to “Kessel” the hell out the boards!!! I personally don’t know how he missed that!

CC89 got ROBBED of an assist!!! He touched the puck while banging away at the puck before Spezz’s tap in!!! You’d think the NHL could get these things right!

  • Bonus2McWalrus

Our PP can be sooo much better, soooooo much more lethal and dangerous!!!

We have enough C’s on the team for Turris to come up and play wing with Spezz on the PP. Conacher is even an experienced center

AND, there is absolutely no damn sense in having Spezz & Bobby split up when we get a PP. The best 3 or 4 Offensive players should be on the top unit. Its a luxury we unfortunately don’t have anymore with alFLEE having fled. But after Pommer turned him and Rayzor inside out in 06 playoffs the only time I can EVER remember seeing aFLEDsson back there was on 5 -3′s when we had Kovalev Funny lol, where is #11 on the Wings PP… The point… If he stays healthy he’s getting 60+ points no prob…

Anyway Our top unit should easily be

    Turry – Spezz – Bobby
    PW EK

Conacher has played C before aand wouldn’t look out of place. The way he goes after the puck he may be more effective as a C. If CMac isn’t “going” or someone needs a to take a seat on a given night, I put the best Senator NOT on my 2 units in place of MacArthur.. Or for that matter anyone not holding their own or doing their part

    Unit 2

    CMac – CC89 – 9MM
    Methot/Cowen Philly/Corvo

Easier when ZBad plays his way back here. Anyway I’m pretty sure our amount of PP goals is doubled if that was how it was to start against Buffalo

    • karlssens

I agree that Bobby needs to be on the first unit, but Turris needs to run the second unit. First unit should still be Michalek-Spezz-Ryan.

      • Bonus2McWalrus

Turris needs to run the 2nd unit for what??? The 40 seconds or less they’re out there… half of that time spent trying to set up.

Does Malkin run the Penguins second unit???

    • MoeDozer

agreed that we can have a very deadly PP however i really do not think having 3fwd and 2d is the best approach. i really want to see us use 4 fwds and 1 D. turris spezz bobby milo conacher greening can be the forwards EK on PP 1 and weirdo PP2. and the other point man imo should be Mac (had huge success doing this with the Laffs) and another player with a big slap shot zibby when he comes back.

  • thepez

Real happy about the win, but really concerned about the defensive coverage on transition. It seemed that every time the Coyotes came into the zone, someone was wide open in the middle. Not sure of the shots attempted at the net but there must have been at least 10-12 times the Coyotes had point blank shots that missed the net and probably 6-8 that Andy saved. If this continues the Sens are in trouble.

    • Tooks

Ya we didnt play all that well and won so I guess thats a positive, Smith’s gaffe in nets gave us the victory basically. SOOO happy Conacher gets rewared with top line minutes and eventually the GWG!! Guy was key to all of Spezza’s goal, including standing infront of the nets getting hammered on 2 of the 3, guy has guts and heart!

  • FBP

    Sweet!

Thanks for placing the bet Chirp.

  • s3nsfan

Just want to put this out there, Jason Spezza was quoted “to all the haters, how ya like me now!” lol

And I personally like Ryan on the Turris line with MacArthur.

Way to pick up the win boys. Bring it home on a positive. Still kinks to be ironed out, but things are looking up.

    Go Sens Go

    Countdown to Home Opener:

    1 Day 11 Hours 39 Minutes 30 Seconds

  • http://www.Merchaholic.ca Merchaholic

Does anyone else notice that the Sens seem to play better with Kassian in the lineup?

    • xN1Cx

      *shudder
Although I will say on the few shifts he had he looked like he was hustling. That line actually controlled the play/forchecked hard in the Pho. end for a shift or two. Not much more you can ask out of a 5 min player.

  • NO65*

Karlsson played over 30 minutes last night. I think this is way too much. Can someone explain why PMac uses him so much. It’s not like he is back to his Norris form yet. Why not just have a better balance with the D’s?

Edit: I love King K and I would want him to play 60 minutes if he could but the reality is that he can’t and doesn’t seem to have his old mojo back YET. He is struggling in the defensive zone and get hits way more than he did in the past.

    • http://www.Merchaholic.ca Merchaholic

Maybe he’s trying to speed him into top Norris form.

      • Tooks

Clearly that is not working! Karlsson needs some rest!

    • xN1Cx

Because all the others are either, too slow or too inexperienced – def. showed on the long trip.

    • Alcatraz

Because it would mean more minutes to Phillips, Gryba, Cowen, Corco who have all really struggled this year
Also keep in mind he played over 4 minutes in powerplay time, which are “easy” minutes
Finally, often its Karlsson who dictates his TOI, Maclean trusts that he wont be burnt and Karlsson knows his own body. We all said it was a “must-win” game, and since it was must win shouldnt we ride our Norris trophy winning Dman a little?

  • Alcatraz

Anyone else want to see Ottawa front load our PP1 and put Turris on the point with his wicked shot?

    Michalek-Spezza-Ryan-Turris-Karlsson
Conacher-SDC-Macarthur-Weiricioch-Karlsson/Phillips 9I hate Phillips ther ebut Maclean keeps using him)

That second PP unit may actually finally give SDC an opportunity to be creative, and could allow Conacher to control the play instead of always being that 3rd wheel who does all the dirty work

    • Tooks

Turris on the point would be useless he has a terrible slap shot, he has a great shot coming down the wing or would be best suited to be hangin high slot for a one timer. Have Bobby setup far side of the net for cross ice one timers and PW46 and EK65 on the points. Spezza working the half wall and I would put little COCO89 in front of the damn net, nobody else does it like him! See Neil give him a hug at the end there, kid has got his teammates respect!

      So PP1:
      Conacher Spezza Ryan
      PW46 Karlsson

      PP2
      CMac Turris Michalek
      Methot Karlsson/PW46

  • SensChirp

New highlights post up here. Working on a contest for later this morning.

  • NO65*

Finally, our 3-2 lost against SJ isn’t that bad after all. We are the only team who came close to beat them. 6-2 against the Blues last night.

    • Tooks

3-2 score doesnt come close to describing the game, if not for Lehner its probably 6-2, 7-2, 8-2…

      • NO65*

I don’t want to disappoint you Tooks but Lehner is part of this team. I remember that for a large part of the second period, we could have scored a few more too. All this to say that SJ is a powerhouse this season. We’ll have a better idea when the Sharks play is Ottawa in a couple of weeks.

        • http://www.Merchaholic.ca Merchaholic

I really hope we beat them at home.

  • NickofTime

One down and two to go: Now that Da Costa has been sent down to the AHL where his skills are better suited it’s time we look to send Pageau down. Both are just too small and to soft to compete at the NHL level unless they are playing against teams that also have a number of small players. I would much rather have a bigger team that is very hard to play against than a fast team of smurfs which is what Montreal has and we know what happened to them in last yr’s playoffs. How soon before BM/PM call up Zibanejad & Grant and demote Pageau & Condra?
