Conacher, Corvo on Waivers

Conacher, Corvo on Waivers

With the NHL Trade Deadline now just a little over 24 hours away, the moves have already started here in Ottawa.

This morning the Senators announced that they have placed Cory Conacher and Joe Corvo on waivers. Corvo isn’t all that surprising when you consider how little he has played of late and the fact that the team has tried to trade him at various points during the season. Conacher on the other hand is a little more perplexing. He was a key piece in the deal that sent Ben Bishop to Tampa Bay at last year’s trade deadline. Conacher never matched the offensive output he enjoyed early last season but was a pretty useful player for Ottawa.

According to Bruce Garrioch, Conacher can still play while on waivers. He is currently skating with Michalek and Spezza at the morning skate and is expected to play tonight. Can’t imagine he clears waivers though. With the Senators now down to 12 healthy forwards, you would expect there is another move to come.

  • Apologies for the website issues we are experiencing today. Server has been overloaded this morning, presumably by people pressing F5 every 30 seconds! Really appreciate your patience and hope to have things back on track in the near future.

  • Jacques

Thinking Hemsky may be joining our guys tonight!

    • Neil’s Feels.

Wouldn’t happen that soon. They’d likely wait until after the game to avoid injuries.

    • bob ray al cal don ed ken

      Hemsky for Greening ?

They could trade uniforms at center ice before the start of the game

      • Jacques

        That would be awesome!

        • Colin

Hemsky – 475 pts in 651 games, career -44 and is unable to remain healthy enough to play a full season, yet you pine for him and shit on Spezza. Get a grip Jacques!

    • http://www.crashthenet.ca/ Luc Wolfe

      god i hope not

  • Neil’s Feels.

Wouldn’t happen that soon. They’d likely wait until after the game to avoid injuries.

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Didn’t like the trade at the time…. Hate it now.

On the off chance he makes it through waivers it’s slightly better…. But what a joke… Should have never moved bishop

    • Sensnation

They had to move Bishop. They should have forced the 2nd round pick instead of Conacher though, I completely agree, but no guarantee that would turn into anything either. There’s rarely a good trade market for goalies, so it’s not like better offers were turned down.

      • Jacques

Poor guy’s demise was playing with Spezza!

        • Sensnation

Lol, Spezza the Destroyer of players with no offensive skill!

          • Jacques

He zaps your skill cuz you have to work twice as hard defensively to cover for the Floater!

          • Sensnation

As long as you still have excuses for the guy getting waived … Time to admit he wasn’t as good as you expected.

      • EHMatt

They did not have to move Bishop. Lehner was pushing the team to keep him with the big club. They could’ve waited until the summer and moved Anderson while his value was high and kept Bishop and Lehner. That would’ve been the right move to do and it’s the one I was hoping for. Unfortunately it didn’t work out that way.

    • thirstytraveller

It would be interesting to find out what other offers BM had last yr for bishop. hinde sight is 20/20

  • A-Train

On the day of the Conacher trade Murray’s tone and body language…not to mention his comments…were very dismissive. Don’t think he ever liked the deal.

    • Sensnation

Agreed. Yzerman took advantage of a shitty trade market for goalies at the time.

  • Dirk-Diggler

Why be upset over the Conacher developments…

It’s a win-win if he get’s claimed. This opens up a roster spot for a guy that we are trying to bring in (Stewart) or a prospect that the Sens have in the system that’s apparently over ridden with good talent. If Da Costa, Hoffman or Stone get a legit shot because of this will anyone be sad to see Conacher go?

    • A-Train

Not upset. Another middle-of-the-road player in an org with too many of them.

      • sprucesens

I think the only thing is we have other players we would have rather moved on waivers, that’s all

    • Sensnation

Only those that thought he’d make the Turris sized leap will be disappointed. Or those that thought Bishop should have been our goalie of the future. Overall it’s as you said, best to give the roster spot to our better prospects.

      • Jacques

Anxious for Spezz to learn to make the TUrris sized leap too. He should emulate number 7!

        • Sensnation

He did in his 20s. Now in his 30s it’s time you stop expecting any further change and accept who he is.

          • Jacques

When u accept crap like that your team Stagnates, exactly as we’re doing this year! Time to take out the trash Murray!

          • Sensnation

LOL, ok Jacques “MORE PROSPECTS!!! Because Prospects are better!!!”

  • RUSH RLZ

As per McKenzie, Pancakes Penner is now a Washington Capital.

    • Dirtysweetness

Wasn’t Penner playing on the top two lines with Anaheim?

  • esk

I thought Conacher had a lot of upside ..wasnt last year his rookie season?

    • Sensnation

You weren’t the only one, a lot of support for him on here this year. His ceiling is really low. I thought we may have been able to throw him in for a team like Buffalo as they need bodies in their top 9, but either way, it’s time to move on.

      • cc

he reminded me of Bobby Boy! just couldn’t get it going in Ottawa.

  • SensChirp

    And Fasth going to Edmonton
    And Robidas to Anaheim

    • Jacques

Wow , the day after they sign that old Laugh’s goalie!

    • Sensnation

Penner to Washington! Anaheim is making moves and going for it!

      • Jacques

They couldn’t afford his breakfast bill any longer!

        • sben

          huh?

        • Sandy

How ironic that Penner gets moved on Pancake Tuesday…

          • CUP 2014-15

            lol

  • sben

the trade deadline madness is on.

  • Jacques

Come on Murray get us a guy for tonight!

  • Neil’s Feels.

Bryzgalov to Edmonton for a 4th.

    • cc

      ??

      • sben

Edmonton got fasth so they don’t need bryz anymore.

    • Sensnation

I think he means Minnesota. How in the world did anyone pay for Bryzgalov.

      • cc

a dept move as Backstrom is day to day and Harding is out. I still think they’ll chase a true #1 tender.

        • Sensnation

Kuemper’s been playing amazing for them. Unless both Harding and Backstrom are out long term, I’m surprised they felt the need.

          • cc

It’s a 4th round pick. Backstrom has been in and out all season. They’ll probably roll with Kuemper but need someone behind him.

          • Sensnation

Agreed, was just supposed to be Harding and/or Backstrom coming back at some point. Makes it sound like their injuries are more longterm. Though yes I know Harding’s hard to predict with his condition.

      • Master Trade Bait

        yup. my bad.

  • Hannibal

Loui Ericcson not on the ice for the Bruins. Could it be a Phillips for Ericsson swap?

    • Neil’s Feels.

Eriksson is worth way more than Phillips. There would be more involved

    • Sensnation

      That is the hope!

    • Jacques

      Haha

  • Sens613

    Edm trades with minn

  • sben

anaheim got a fourth rounder for penner. I think we should have done that deal. I would have done that anytime.

    • Sandy

He’s a UFA at season’s end.. Murray wants term

  • Neil’s Feels.

Brodeaur to the Wild. Wow. The end of an era

  • my2sens

Devils goalie Martin Brodeur will make one more start in his legendary career with New Jersey before being traded Wednesday, according to a New York Daily News report.

Brodeur will make a final start Tuesday night against Detroit before being traded to the Minnesota Wild. That way, he can say goodbye to fans in New Jersey, where he started 1,249 games, according to the report.

Brodeur, who leads the NHL all-time in wins and shutouts, has two sons who attend Shattuck-St. Mary’s school in Minneapolis. It’s the same school that hosted several star NHLers, including Sidney Crosby.

    Neil’s Feels may be right….

    • Tooks

But they just got Bryz? With Brodeur that will be 4 goalies!! LOL

    • Sensnation

Ya that makes no sense. You don’t overpay for Bryzgalov to turn around and get Brodeur too.

  • son of a Diefenbaker

Cory Conacher = Bobby Butler 2.0

  • Millennium

Penner and Bryz each only cost a fourth? What happened to prices being high? I’d do a rental of Penner for a fourth any day

    • Sensnation

Penner has few supporters left in the NHL, though for years BM has been suggested as 1 of them. Now if he didn’t offer up a better offer than a 4th, I’d think he’s over him.

    • Perry

      who…?

      • BFR

        Exactly…

    • Master Trade Bait

This is a purely AHL deal Tooks, come on. It’s not like the MTL deal at all.

  • cc

Twitter talk see’s Vanek or Moulson to Ducks.

I know they didn’t dump much Salary with Penner, but pretty sure CAP wouldn’t be an issue for them.

    • Sensnation

Penner made 2 mil. They were under 2mil from the cap. Fasth was another 2.9mil. So now they can afford a ~6 mil player … sounds like Vanek or Moulson.

      • BFR

They took on Robidas, so +2.9Mil.

      • Jacques

Yeah but this time of year a 6 mill salary is only 1,5 on the cap

        • Sensnation

That’s the point though. Those 2mil and 2.9 salaries they already paid part of, so it’s not that they have 6mil cap room at this point in time, they just would’ve had the room for a player who makes that much. But BFR correctly added in the Robidas acquisition, so they still need money going out unless the LTIR of Sourray gives them enough breathing room.

  • Sens613

So sending corvo and conacher is making room for a dman and a fwd. is this a trade involving one team or multiple teams?

    Buff d/f?

    • Sensnation

      1 Buffalo team likely.

      • Sens613

        Hope something happens soon.

      PLAN the parade

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

I hope this move is making space for a huge deal with Winnipeg

  • Dirtysweetness

That’s it folks! Murray is done!

    • Jacques

      Haha

  • SensChirp

Interesting move. Maybe adding a defenceman in Bingo in case they need to call one up tomorrow. Perhaps tied to Phillips negotiation?

    • cc

hope it’s tied to a Cowen or Phillips move.

    • BFR

      Sounds reasonable….

    • Dirk-Diggler

I think so. This let’s the Sens deal Phillips to Boston and replace him with Classen. Mullen will play in the AHL. I can see a few AHL guys getting called up (Stone, Classen and hopefully Da Costa) to replace Phillips, Corvo, Conacher and Michalek

      • Sensnation

        PAGEAU!!! :)

        • Jacques

Trade Spezza and we can put Pageau as 3rd C , good thinking!

    • Jacques

Maybe Cowen will be dealt too, I say Cowen for Connolly! Would help us if we meet Tampa in The Playoffs cuz our guys know how to skate around him , since they do it in practice all the time!

      • Sensnation

Cowen for Connolly? Really jacques? Your hard on for prospects is out of this world.

        • Jacques

Have you ever seen this guy play. He is getting the TUrris treatment in Tampa, I’ve seen Cowen for too long he sucks! Connolly is a top 5 pick!

          • Sensnation

How do you compare Connolly and Conacher before today’s announcement? lol

Connolly is a really good prospect, but not at the price you keep offering. If less than 2 full seasons of Cowen is too long for you, you just keep proving why your lack of patience is your biggest issue as a fan. Players take time to develop, and most prospects don’t turn out.

          • sprucesens

By that logic Cowen could just as much not turn out, and so far, he has looked more bad than good. Not saying do that trade, just that the argument can work in both directions

          • Sensnation

My argument IS admitting both ways. But Cowen is already much better than most of you give him credit for.

    • Sens613

Making space for call ups is an option to I guess. Was hoping for a trade…lol.

    • Sensnation

That’s funny, just came to the same conclusion below. Makes sense for them for sure. That would be a scary offense.

  • Dirk-Diggler

The arms race in the west is heating up. Anaheim, St Louis are looking scary. Maybe LA, CHI and SJ could be interested in Milo or Spezza now to bolster their own lineup! Now is the time for the Sens to trade wisely and maximize their return for these guys.

    • Sensnation

Neither CHI nor SJ have any cap space.

      • Dirk-Diggler

Don’t crap all over my dreams! :P

        • Sensnation

Lol, my apologies :) I heard SJ want to trade us Couture and Chicago can’t wait to send us Saad.

          • Sens613

Throw in Hossa and it’s a deal.

    • Jacques

One can only dream dude! Hard to get someone to take them off our hands I guess!

  • MakesSens

  • Jacques

Brett Connolly should be one of Murray’s targets!

  • Sensnation

People thought this trade deadline was all smoke! This is going to be a very unproductive 28 hours at work.

  • cc

completely off topic, who’s got most potential? Trouba or Lindholm? D prospect.

    • Sensnation

Trouba, but both are really good. Trouba is the reason Winnipeg is considering moving Byfuglien.

      • cc

I’ve got to make a decision on if Trouba, Lindholm, Eric Gelina and Andrej Sekera. I’ve got room for 2, keeper league :S

        • Sensnation

If you’re going for it this year Sekera may be the current high producer, but longterm I think Trouba is the best of that group. Hard to pick between Lindholm and Gelinas, it’s a toss up as Lindholm is 2 years younger I believe. Definitely Trouba though.

Was also told there is serious interest in Cory Conacher. I don’t believe he goes through waivers unclaimed. #Sens #TradeCentre

Good for Sens. Makes room up front.

    • Sensnation

Tim tricked his uncle into waiving him so that he could grab him at little cost ;)

      • sprucesens

        No cost….

        • Master Trade Bait

If a team picks him up I believe the Sens are still on the hook for some salary.

          • s3nsfan75

My belief is they only pay half if he’s claimed on re-entry waivers but i am by no means a CBA pro

          • BFR

Re-entry waivers disappeared in new CBA.

          • s3nsfan75

“The 2013 collective bargaining agreement eliminated re-entry waivers.”

you sir are correct, as I stated I am no pro lol

          • BFR

I actually learned that today too, looking up something else…

          • sprucesens

Cost to Tim… Nothing comes our way

        • Sensnation

FYI – Claiming someone off waivers has a cost, you have to pay a fee to the NHL.

          • sprucesens

My god. No assets given up. We acquire nothing is what I’m saying

          • Sensnation

Buddy you tried to correct me. And my little cost referred to the waiver claim cost. So deal with it.

    • Doc

Exactly what I knew would happen. I don’t get it.

    • SensChirp

Guess that means the Oilers are going to grab him

  • A-Train

I always thought Penner would end up in Ottawa one day. At this rate it still may happen…dude seems to get traded once a year.

  • karlssens

Hemsky and Ehrhoff pls :)! I feel the price for Stewart is now too high.

    • Jacques

I agree and get a young star like Connolly out of a Tampa. time to screw Yzerman back!

  • karlssens

Would you guys do edmontons first for Spezza ahah? Just hypothetically.

    • MakesSens

No but it’s really quite tempting

    • Dirk-Diggler

      In a heartbeat

    • Sensnation

Come on, that’s just terrible. It’s a bad draft year and you want to trade him at less than half price?

    • Sens613

2015 first and eberly for spezz michalek and prince(throw in Phillips for fun).

      • Jacques

        And some rolls of tape!

        • Sens613

I thought u threw that in

          • Jacques

            Haha sorry we didn’t confer,

          • Sens613

Guess we be keeping those rolls of tape and the bag of pucks…lol.

    • Jacques

Yes, Spezza and Cowen for their first and whateva! Lol

  • NickofTime

Finally, BM should never have signed Corvo to begin with, they already had enough defencemen especially if we count Boro in Bingo. I’ve been calling for Conacher to get traded all yr, I don’t agree with you that he was a useful player, he was taking a roster spot from a more useful player in Mark Stone. My guess is that nobody takes him, I assume he has already been shopped around & no one was interested which is why he is now placed on waivers. Hopefully, he is not re-signed this summer. Something must be going on for BM to do this but if neither are picked up, I doubt they are assigned to Bingo, maybe Conacher.

    • Sensnation

Corvo was insurance and if it wasn’t for Ceci stepping up a year early, we’d have been using Corvo most of the season, like we were early on. Remember when people thought he was one of better dmen earlier this season? So crazy, people saw what they wanted to.

      • Jacques

Glad he’s gone, he was brutal.

  • laffin681021

Robidas to the Ducks for a 4th…would have taken that.

    • Sandy

He’s currently injured and out until at least mid-March.

  • WaitingSince92

That’s a shame about conacher. Always thought we could get more for bishop (obvious starter material), but when I saw that we got conacher, I assumed Murray knew something I didn’t.

This is one of the very few shitty moves Murray has made as a gm (the exception that proves the rule – ie that Murray is an amazing hockey mind). Too bad conacher couldn’t contribute.

Hope we get something for michalek and Phillips. We won’t be much worse of for trading them and this is probably the last chance we’ll get to trade then for anything of value.

  • WaitingSince92

Chirp, what do you mean when you say conacher has been a “useful” player? I’m a little perplexed…

    • Jacques

He wore a jersey for awhile!

    • SensChirp

Feisty, draws penalties, 8th in points with limited ice time. Scored that goal against Montreal in the playoffs.

      • esk

Why couldnt we trade him for a pick or something if there is a lot of interest? and why did we give up on him so quick? He was on pace to win the calder last year

        • Sensnation

Calder? He was never winning that. His stats were Stamkos/St Louis induced and a complete mirage!

          • esk

Actually yeah he was a candidate when we traded for him…

          • Sensnation

The award is voted on at the end of the year. The fact halfway through the year someone considered him for it, doesn’t mean he was ever going to win it. He wasn’t even going to stay with Stamkos all year, which is why they wanted to trade him.

          • esk

When we got him he was 2nd in rookie scoring behind Huberdeau who ended up winning the calder last year so if he continued in that pace he would have been a candidate for sure. HENCE why sens traded for him, hoping he would continue in that direction….What’s your issue buddy? Consistently on my posts, trying to correct me. lolol your a troll

          • Sensnation

Consistently on your posts? God complex much. We’re going back and forth on 1 chain of comments. You said he was on pace to win the calder, now you’re saying he was 2nd to Huberdeau, which is my assertion from the start. The guy who won it was always going to win it. Conacher played less than 30 total minutes in the 3 games before coming to Ottawa. He was already losing favor in TB. Not sure why you think this is personal.

          • esk

            Just a trend I’ve
noticed on my previous posts. YES, conacher was on PACE to at least contend for
the CALDER trophy when we traded for him. He was only trailing Huberdeau by a
couple of points in rookie scoring. SO
if he continued in that pace than YES he COULD HAVE won the CALDER. This is a
valid argument. This was the belief in the entire NHL. That is why the
bishop/conacher trade was considered a win/win. You think murray traded for him
knowing he was going to be useless? He got him for his potential, and was
wondering why they gave up on him so easily.

        • BFR

There may have been interest, just not enough willing to pay for it. Though I did like his contribution for the reasons Chirp mentions, this move is likely tied to a future move before the deadline.

      • WaitingSince92

        “That goal” hahahaha

    • laffin681021

He wasn’t useless…I think that people just expected him to be the player he was in TB playing with Stamkos, who obviously made him look better then he actually is IMO.

  • Jacques

Let’s go Murray trade Phillips! Stop being nice Uncle Bryan, balls man!

    • cc

      move him!

    • Doc

They are close to re-signing him it seems.

  • MikeS

Well first off Im gonna assume conacher gets picked up and maybe corvo. Only way it makes sense for them to dump them is if they are bringing in more players via trade. This makes me think they are actually going to trade spezza(only piece that would bring back multiple players besides karlsson who they better not trade). I just hope we aren’t all super pissed about this soon

    • Sensnation

Trading prospects for current NHL players would also explain it.

      • MikeS

That as well, however why not just trade conacher in the package for that?

        • Sensnation

No one wants to pay for him, he sucks, there are tons of players who can do the same thing and have size. Take your pick.

          • MikeS

You could throw him in a package

          • BFR

In the CAP world you can’t just throw him in.

          • Sensnation

Only if people want him. There’s a max of 50 contracts per team, few teams would want to waste 1 on him, let alone pay for him as a thrown in even.

    • Kohlmanator

We wouldn’t be Sens fans if we weren’t pissed off after a trade.

  • Doc

I have a feeling we are going to stand pat.

  • karlssens

Huge mistake re signing Phillips.. He sucks now

    • cc

I didn’t like the 2 year extension 2 years ago, now this one.. He won’t be able to compete next season. Move him!

      • Jacques

        No kidding!

    • FBP

I’d rather have a vet 5/6/7 D for two years with a decent playoff rep and a emotional connection to the fan base than a fourth round pick.

      • CUP 2014-15

I don’t mind the signing but some things up. Sign Philly, trade for a career 27 yr old smallish D to help out in Bingo. I think were saying good-bye to some of our D. PW, EG, BORO, JC and Cleasson…Karl, CP, MM. CC does not add up.

  • Doc

So two year on the table for Phillips it seems.

He should be our first lifer then!

    • Sens613

Someone’s got to be the first but at what cost?

  • Jacques

Murray is an idiot , again signing Phillips! geez!

  • Jacques

    http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=19GqQRNKzag

No you’re right SENSNATION, you know better I’d rather Cowen over this guy!

  • xN1Cx

    I demand SATISFACTION!

  • Moudy Mahfouz

I love what Phillips has done for us but 2 more years of him I dont think I could do it..Hopefully the $$ isnt high for the guy!

    • Jacques

Let him take Melnyk and Murray’s empties to the beer store as payment!

  • Moudy Mahfouz

and I agree i think Sens stand pat. Just had a weird feeeling they dont do anything major and another flop day for sens fan and Murray. but who knows

    • Sensnation

If Murray stands pat, why would he waive anyone today? Sounds like he’s making room under the internal budget.

      • Aaron 2.0

That’s what I expect is going on. If, initial reports are right, and Phillips has a two-year offer on the table, combined with waving Conacher, it’s probably fair to speculate that it will be a forward via trade. I honestly don’t get what Murray is doing. If we’re complaining about Phillips’ level of play now, I don’t want to even think what that means in 2 years time. Worse, I guess Murray thinks the blue-line is pretty decent. Less room for external options. I’m lost right now.

  • A-Train

Not sure why any reasonable fan would be upset about a 2-year extension for Phillips.

He’s clearly worth more to the Senators than what teams were willing to give, which was probably 2nd round pick tops.

    • Master Trade Bait

He’s had a quite obvious decline in the last 2 or 3 years. After this year he could easily be battling for the 6th dman spot.

      • Jacques

And what does Murray do he has Boro on a one way and he isn’t even as good as Claessen! He has painted himself into a corner! Wake up Murray!

        • Sensnation

Boro’s 1way can be sent to minors and is very low cap figure. No corner painting.

          • Jacques

Love paying a guy 700 000 to play in Bingo! Dude being a know it all , and having all the wrong answers should keep u quiet!

          • Sensnation

What are you talking about? That’s a low as hell cap figure. What did I say that was wrong? Are you just going all nuclear again?

          • Jacques

A team like Ottawa will not pay a guy an NHL salary to be in Bingo, wake-up! We aren’t the RANGERS!

          • Sensnation

Wow that’s your excuse for saying I’m wrong. So stupid man, enjoy your day and your prospect man crushes. Once again, you’re a complete joke.

          • Jacques

No answer cuz u know your wrong again! And Connolly is 3 times the player your goofy Jared Seinfeld is!

    • Aaron 2.0

I’ll very respectfully disagree. He’s on about par with the young guys playing around him right now. Presumably they will get better, and he will get worse with age. And, that’s one less spot to bring in a legit top-4 D. Today we have 2 (Karlsson and Methot). Hopefully, the young guys will make gains sooner rather than later, but D development takes time.

      • A-Train

Chris Phillips’ new contract won’t be getting in the way of an incoming top-4 defenceman.

        • Aaron 2.0

Karlsson, Methot, Ceci, are not going anywhere (Methot is technically not untouchable, but not likely to be moved). Add Phillips. Boro on a 1-way next year. Cowen and Weircioch still developing, very early in their careers. Who would you clear out? There’s a numbers problem for next year, if you’re adding D.

          • Jacques

On the Ball Aaron, some people don’t get it!

          • A-Train

“sigh”. If the team is able to bring in a legit top-4, i am saying it won’t be Phillips contract that prevents them from doing it. They will find another way to make room.

          • Aaron 2.0

I’m just wondering who you’re giving up on? I’d have no problem if it’s Boro. But, I wouldn’t give up on Cowen or Weircioch.

    • Sensnation

Even just watching Phillips with Ceci last game reminded me how much he still has to give as a 6th dman. Their chemistry is just much better than Ceci and anyone else this year.

      • Doc

Yep. Phillips was cery solid last game.

    • Sens613

It’s definitely as a mentor role for all the young dmen.

    • Miguel

because he is not good enough to crack our top 8 next year, and having him forced into our top 6 when there are better players is brutally painful to watch!

  • CUP 2014-15

BM is going to bring in a top 6 winger to play with Spezz and a top 4 D. I would not be surprised to see him bring in two top 6 along with that Top 4 D. Just think it’s time.

  • Sensnation

So who do people think will be the biggest name moved tomorrow across the NHL? Any unexpected big names?

    • MikeS

Right now I’m thinking spezza. My guess is the sens made their moves to make room for the package comming back….. I hope they dont trade him though

      • Jacques

Time for the New Era to begin!

        • MikeS

Better be a fricking huge package coming back though

        • Doc

Somehow I have a feeling that you don’t like Spezza.

          • Jacques

We have Centers who play a better two way game than him, that’s all. Used to love the guy but he can’t bring it anymore! Shit my password to this site is Spezza!

          • Sens613

So user name plus spezza for password. Next post = spezza for mayor!

          • Miguel

me thinks you may be on to something here :-)

    • FistsofNeil25

I think Vanek and Kesler will be the only two big name players dealt. Callahan, St Louis and obviously Spezza will all stay put.

      • MikeS

I forgot about mr St Louis

  • A-Train

I get that there’s a big fan element who want every veteran traded or left unsigned. Spezza, Phillips, Michalek, Neil all out the door etc.

But you can’t actually be thinking the Senators will do anything like this at the dealine, right?

  • Mark

I think Phillips is still effective when with the right pairing. We need a veteran presence on D. How many veteran Dmen log as much ice time and miss as few games as Phillips? As long as it’s not for a big cap hit, I’m fine with 2 years.

    • Doc

Same here. He’s look good with Ceci so I don’t mind.

    • A-Train

Yup. The “ice a team of 20-year-olds / rookies” crowd is going to have a hard time understanding, but you are exactly right.

      • Sensnation

Don’t tell Jacques, he knows best, prospects rule!

        • MikeS

          “New is ALWAYS better!”

        • Jacques

          It isn’t a smart move.

      • Aaron 2.0

I guess I would go about moving Phillips, then finding a younger but still veteran defender, either via trade or through UFA, and put less priority on another top-6. The young guys can survive 20 games if the right trade doesn’t transpire. Lots of time to find someone else for the top-4.

        • Jacques

Well said, but SENSNATION wants to ice the all Star Sens Lineup of Michalek-Spezza-Condra with Cowen and Phillips on D!

          • Sensnation

You know it, where’s Cunneyworth, bring him back!

          • Jacques

            Haha

        • A-Train

Do you think it’s possible Bryan Murray has explored that option and found it isn’t there?

          • Doc

            PREPOSTEROUS!

          • Aaron 2.0

Well, i’m not putting too much stock in this year. If we make it great. Keeping Phillips just seems like the decision is mostly about this year (not wanting to let him go for only picks). But, there’s certainly lots of time between now and next season to find a replacement.

          • A-Train

It is definitely about this year and next. You or I may disagree, but Murray’s said that’s his current window of contention and all of his current statements/actions seem to indicate he’s being sincere.

So personally I wouldn’t expect any of the bigger names to move until next year’s deadline (and then, only if we are clearly out of the playoffs).

          • Aaron 2.0

Yeah, I wouldn’t recommend moving any big names now. Just expiring contracts for players that are regressing, if there is a market for them. I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

          • A-Train

I just want to point out it is not MY position, but what I expect Bryan Murray to do based on my observation of him and the team over the years.

He won’t trade Michalek for picks because without Michalek we have, in his and Maclean’s eyes, less of a chance of making the playoffs.

          • Aaron 2.0

Fair enough – You see this as Murray’s plan. Focusing on trying to get a series with the Penguins this year doesn’t do a lot for me as a fan. I’m less concerned about a 2-year window to win a cup (the team’s not close to contending today, IMO), and more about sustained long-term success.

          • A-Train

Sure, and I get that — everyone wants to see another deal like the one that got rid of Yashin and brought us Spezza/Chara.

But I also see where Murray is coming from. The point is to fill the CTC with as many meaningful and exciting games down the stretch and into the playoffs as possible.

A big sell-off when we are right in the hunt? That’d be a tough thing to pitch to any owner (and remember Murray just re-upped his own contract, probably with a promise to Melnyk that he’d be able to keep the team in the playoffs).

          • CUP 2014-15

Bang on A-Train !!! I think were seeing the Org. make a run right here without giving up our top young core. Were saying good-Bye to some of our young D for sure. We have 4 in place with CC, EK, MM and CP. Pick someone…PW, JC, EG, BORO and Gleasson.

          • Jacques

Gleason plays in TO and isn’t Swedish!

          • CUP 2014-15

LOL, Told you I am old, Cleasson

          • CUP 2014-15

Good for you man, nothing like Kids, most of the time but that’s a topic for another time, TRADE Someone let’s go

          • Jacques

No kidding spring break with the boys and want some Sens moves to be made!

  • MakesSens

Philips better resign or get traded soon. I’m sick of pressing the damn refresh button on the TSN web site page!

    • Jacques

Haha, I think the hooker he hired is still working over Uncle Bryan!

  • my2sens

Is there a time when trades are no longer announced or allowed during the day? Or can things happen 24/7?

    • MikeS

Generally you wont hear about things after 10pm but you never know. Also around 5pm 2moro all trades will be anounced

    • Sens613

      24/7

    • Moudy Mahfouz

24/7 or unless ur team is playing I think

    • A-Train

If you are living in Eastern Standard Time it’s probably safe to get some sleep tonight!

    • my2sens

      Thanks fellow SCers!!

  • senshockeyfan

@DarrenDreger: Canucks trade Patrick Mullen to Ottawa for Jeff Costello.

    • Doc

      Old news! lol

  • FistsofNeil25

I don’t think Murray should have softened his stance on a one year deal for Phillips. Two years is just too much to be honest. I know it doesn’t sound like much but at Phillips’ age and current game state, they should only be taking it one year at a time.

That Robidas trade to Anaheim for a conditional 4th round pick gives us a pretty good indication of what Phillips’ trade value is at the moment. As little as I trust Phillips these days, a 4th round draft pick does little for this team right now. I’m only in favor of a Phillips trade if it brings something of value back to the organization. It doesn’t seem like that’s a realistic possibility.

Regardless of whether we trade Phillips or re-sign him, the Sens need to do something to upgrade our defense. We’re one of the worst defensive teams in hockey this season and Methot and Karlsson are the only legit top 4 guys we have. Keeping the current group together isn’t going to make us a better hockey team.

    • Sensnation

I’d say worst case he fulfills a Corvo type role in year 2 of the deal. It’s not ideal, but if the price is decent it is worth having him retire a Senator, especially with his chemistry with Ceci.

      • FistsofNeil25

But what is his salary likely to be? We can’t pay him 2+ million to be the spare defenseman in year two of the contract. It doesn’t make sense to do that right…especially for a budget team. Every dollar counts.

I’m very much okay with the idea of playing Phillips and Ceci in the bottom pairing, but that leaves us with a gaping hole in that 3-4 spot that will be very difficult to fill.

        • Sensnation

That 3-4 hole is there whether we re-sign Phillips or not, his salary will not get you that player and the hope is someone internal grabs that this year or next.

In 2 years the tv deal revenues will be in, so our budget should be higher. And in 2 years, 2mil will be like 1.5 now. Corvo was a steal at his salary this year, despite his level of contribution. For a lifer, it’s a decent overpay imo.

          • FistsofNeil25

I suppose I’m just getting a little impatient. I don’t want to enter next season with as many question marks as we have this season.

I’ve always felt that the three most important parts of a team are the 1-3 line center slots, top 4 d, and starting goaltender. I really don’t like the way our top four looks right now.

          • Sensnation

I agree with you about the way to build a team. Those are by far the most important positions. Possibly include a top 3 elite winger.

I think we have Karlsson, Cowen will either be top 4 or traded, Methot plays in our top 4. Ceci may be ready for it next year, but if he’s staying with Phillips in 3rd pairing that gets extra minutes, I see the same hole you do. Gryba’s not a top 4, Wiercioch could be but not so far, Boro definitely not … Darkhorse could be Claesson.

Also though, all these players will have another year under the belt and we just need 1 to make that step. The pain this year could pay off longterm.

          • FistsofNeil25

I just don’t like having so many “ifs” at such an important position.

Cowen should have been a top 4 this year but he hasn’t demonstrated that he’s all that close right now. There’s a good chance that he has a bounce back season next year and begins to progress in the right direction, but there’s also a good chance that he doesn’t.

Ceci could also take another big step next year and prove himself further, but a lot of young defensemen struggle in their second NHL season. It’s a trend we see year after year. I would rather see him in the 3rd pairing playing somewhat sheltered minutes as well as powerplay time. There’s no need to put extra pressure on a young player and expecting them to be a top 4 before they’re ready.

Then there’s Wiercioch and Gryba. I don’t believe either of them possess a good enough all-round package to be reliable top four defenseman. I think they’re both ideal bottom pairing guys on a good blueline.

          • Sensnation

I have more faith in Cowen than most. I think Karlsson was his problem as much as he was Karlssons, hard to defend 2 people at once. He was never supposed to be a difference maker this year, that was just unreasonable to expect. This year was always a growth year for him where we needed to get him minutes when possible. No one else stepped up, he got them by default. This is pretty much his sophomore season. Think of how hard we’re being on the guy in his 2nd season. Anyways, I think we agree on most of the rest, will be interesting to see how much work all these players put in over the summer.

    • Aaron 2.0

You nailed exactly how I feel about our D, FistofNeil25. I’d be okay with 1-year in a reduced role. I don’t like anything over that either.

    • Miguel

Agree on Phillips, he has been slowing down, and less effective more and more over the past 3 years, so much so that if it weren’t for his name and his contract he would be the 7th dman,
So one more year is more than enough as long as he is happy as the 6/7th dman.
But for the love of god please do not make me watch him for two more years!

  • Sandy

I see no problem in having Phillips for 2 yrs.. so as long as yr 2 doesn’t have a NMC or NTC. Then he can be dealt if need be..

    • FistsofNeil25

Depends on the dollar amount as well. I would bet that Murray offered him significantly less money in the second year of that deal than the first.

Maybe 2.5 for year one and 1,5 for year two.

  • MethotToMyMadness

Another very unproductive work day. Damn you NHL Trade Deadline. But I love you at the same time!

    • Sens613

Yeah, another write off. Can’t even go home…lol

  • SensChirp

Andrew MacDonald to the Flyers for a 3rd this year and a 2nd next season.

    • Sens613

Thanks for the update. Keep it coming.

    • CUP 2014-15

Nice pick up by the Flyers.

    • MethotToMyMadness

      Scratch another off the list

    • Sensnation

Nice pickup for the Flyers. Sounds like Islanders finally came down on their price, but worth a gamble for a team with late picks.

    • FistsofNeil25

Again, another player that has now been dealt for a lesser value than most people expected. Murray definitely won’t get anything close to what he wants for Phillips.

    • Yukon Cornelius

I think the sens should have been targeting AMac, especially he only went for a 2nd and a 3rd. Colour me disappointed that Murray couldn’t get him out of Long Island and into a Sens jersey.

  • Moudy Mahfouz

All these teams in the playoff race making moves IE: caps, philly Sens def need to do something.

    • Aaron 2.0

No need to get overly involved in a pissing contest. Although a very reasonable pickup for the flyers. Kudos to them.

  • Miguel

yes put me in the disappotinted group with Conacher.
We gave up on a young starting goalie, that arguably could have won the #1 this year here in Ottawa.
I know that we had a controversy, but tough titty, you dont make a move to appease ego’s, you make a move that improves your team, and perhaps we could have gotten more at the draft than we did last year.
BM has made some glorious trades, but he certainly got robbed by Yzerman on this one.

    • MethotToMyMadness

Personally, any time you deal a Goalie who has done nothing but show he’s ready, you NEED to get a proven player in return. Obviously Murray didn’t do that, Instead he took a gamble on a guy who showed he may have something. But he wasn’t proven. And now we know the result.

    • Sensnation

Hard to say robbed when goalie markets are few and far between. He either had to keep Bishop and deal with 3 #1s or trade him for something. Yzerman was unwilling to pay 2nd rnd pick price, which again isn’t anything huge by overall standards and is just as likely to miss out as Conacher and a 4th was.

    • A-Train

Here is how I look at it:

Conacher played a key role in helping us crush the Habs.

That puts me in my happy place.

    • MakesSens

There’s no shame in putting our faith in Lehner, we always thought he would be our future starting goaltender. It’s easy to look at the trade now and say “What a good trade!” or “What was he thinking?” but, I’m sure it really isn’t that easy to be put in BM’s shoes.

    • Roar…

The choice was whether or not to keep Anderson. At the time I assume management didn’t feel either of the other two had established themselves enough to justify dealing Anderson for a strong return. Bishop has had one good year in Tampa. I wouldn’t anoint him an elite #1 just yet. He could just as easily shit the bed next season. He certainly hasn’t looked as good the past few weeks where Tampa has been not as good. Also, look what V. Fasth was just traded for. Hard to argue Bishop held any more value than him.

Team took the best deal available for a player they couldn’t otherwise keep unless they dealt one of Lehner or Anderson. Team has faith in Lehner and so do I. Andy deal was about deciding whether or not we should sell high. Pretty tough to deal him away seeing as he’s been the first consistent #1 Ottawa has had in a very long time. In a goalie graveyard town it’s pretty hard to give up the one guy who’s been able to come in and dominate and be well liked by his teammates.

  • Sandy

    Don Brennan ‏@SunDoniB 3h

Waiving Cory Conacher does, at the very least, free up a “short jersey” for Mike Cammalleri #sens

    • Moudy Mahfouz

Id actually love to se Cammaleri in a sens jersey

      • CUP 2014-15

Could you see him step on Calgary ice as a Sen tomorrow, LOL

        • MethotToMyMadness

If the Sens are looking for a top 6 who can score, he would fill the void for sure. But the question is would he stay here?

          • CUP 2014-15

He’s not what BM has said they are looking for with the exception of being a top 6. Power forward with term. That would knock out both him and Hemsky I would think.

    • son of a Diefenbaker

…. and we’ll always have a “stupid” jersey for Dildo Don

    • Sensnation

      Please no! Locker room destroyed!

      • Jacques

I agree with you for once!

    • FistsofNeil25

      That would be terrible.

  • bob

Conacher will be picked up by buffalo.. On to Phillps, a lot of negative posts on the man, I beg to differ.. I mean, he’s having an off year, so is the entire team. Now, come playoffs, Phillps performs every time, now Spezza in the playoffs, there’s another topic to discuss, love the stat of point per game, I know you need to get there, once you’re there, you need to step it up, that’s what’s lacking in his game. Looking forward to some trades!!

  • Hax

The two year offer from the Sens to Phillips is probably structured so that they can buy out the second year if they want and mutually agree. Since we have yet to use any compliance buyouts, this is as close as you can get to a one year deal with a club option for year 2. That probably means the money is low especially in year 2 – wonder if Philly goes for it?

    • Jacques

He’d be an idiot , some team out there will give him 3 mill a year easily for 2 years! There are dummies out there!

      • Hax

True but he clearly wants to stay in Ottawa and if he does have 3 years left in him the Sens will not buy him out of the second year. And if they do and he STILL thinks he’s not finished those same teams that would give him 3 years this summer will give him 2 years next summer.

  • Hannibal

Conacher is not gone yet. BM keeping cards extremely close to the vest. It will either be feast or famine for this team, either he stays put or does something completely out of the ordinary. i.e. a trade no one expects. Tomorrow is another day.

    • Sensnation

Late game tonight, then the anticipation of tomorrow. Gonna be hard to sleep!

  • Jacques

Flyers paid a lot for MacDonald, Phillips has value!

    • MakesSens

      Philips is no MacDonald

      • Jacques

MacDonald is like a 6th round draft pick who has never really done much! Phillips probably has more points than him this year!

        • Sensnation

MacDonald has 24pts to Phillips’ 13. Just use google search man, you’d be so much more informed.

        • CUP 2014-15

    • Sensnation

There were reports they wanted a 1st. For Phillips we were searching for a 2nd rnd pick+. With that fall off Phillips only gets you a 3rd+ and that’s not worth giving up what he means to this franchise and fanbase.

  • SensChirp

I know it’s hard for people to accept because you can’t measure it, but “veteran presence” matters. The locker room has missed Alfredsson this year. Keeping Phillips around is more important than the mid-round pick would be.

    • laffin681021

      Can’t agree more.

    • my2sens

ie. Edmonton Oilers. They are full of young guns and aren’t doing anything…

      • iKarly65

EDM has veterans by your definitions. Guys who’ve played 500+ games. Doesn’t mean that they are good. Phillips is far from a great defenceman. Slwoer than average speed, can’t keep up with game, d-zone coverage breakdowns, doesn’t always make the best, smartest plays.

    • A-Train

Yes. There’s a reason people say a last-place team “looks like a bunch of AHLers”.

    • Phil.

True, but Phillips has more “intangibles” than “tangibles” at this point.

    • MakesSens

I thought we were trading Philips for Chara, that is all kinds of veteran presence!

    • Sens613

Bless Alfie, is there a secret you like to share with us? Waive 89 to make space for 11?

I agree that Philips presence and mentorship is valuable for a young d. Play is declining but nice to have lifer retire a sens.

    • FistsofNeil25

He definitely is more important than a mid-round pick, but if we’re keeping him around then one or two other defensemen on the current roster need to be on their way out between now and next season.

We have 8 defenders on our current roster and 7 of them are good enough to play regularly, but only two of them (Karlsson and Methot) are worthy of top four responsibilities as Ceci, Phillips, Cowen, Wiercioch and Gryba are all bottom pairing guys.

If Murray plans on re-signing Phillips, he needs to do something to fix the logjam to ensure that Wiercioch and Gryba are put in a position to play somewhere in the NHL, and two upgrade our top 4.

We won’t be anywhere close to Cup contenders with the current group we have.

    • LeafsSux

      Amen to that!

  • Doc

Any interest for Williams from Sens?

    • A-Train

Could see it. There were rumours in the past.

      • Roar…

If he’s actually available there should be massive interest. He’s a phenomenal hockey player.

      • SensChirp

Forgot all about that. There was a time when it looked like he had a contract done with Ottawa and then bailed at the last minute. 4 years ago maybe?

        • iKarly65

          that was Jason Williams.

        • A-Train

heh heh. did you not report that as done and then walk it back?

(sorry…love the site by the way!)

  • FistsofNeil25

    LUONGO TRADED TO THE PANTHERS!

    • Sensnation

I just heard that too and was like what am I watching? WTF!

      • FistsofNeil25

        Are you watching Bob McCown?

      • MethotToMyMadness

NO F’ING WAY!! Now we know why Lack was starting.

      • Sens613

That’s why they moved out weaver, cap space. Lol.

    • esk

      haha goodcall!!

  • FistsofNeil25

Honestly good for Luongo to get out of Vancouver. I know it’s Florida but if you’re Luo, you’re just happy to get the hell away from the Canucks organization.

I don’t know how Mike Gillis still has a job.

    • Sensnation

He’ll be a really good role model and leader for the young guys on that team. They may be able to save their Markstrom goalie prospect too.

      • MakesSens

Well I don’t know if what spoons said is true but it sure puts a damper on your comment

        • Sensnation

          Haha, agreed!

    • Sens613

      Biggest surprise of the year!

    • Sandy

I believe his wife is from Florida and he has a home there. I’m sure he’s very happy to be away from the Vancouver mess and how he was treated..
      Good for him..

  • MethotToMyMadness

So is Florida shipping out Thomas? What would the plan be?

    • Sensnation

Maybe Thomas going the other way?

    • MakesSens

      Rumours say Pittsburgh

    • CohMa

      Markstrom

    • CUP 2014-15

      Markstrom +

  • Spoons

Vancouver got Markstrom for Bobby Lou

    • Sensnation

Seriously? Wow! I guess the Sedins are on their way out next. Rebuild!

      • Spoons

Lack – Markstrom tandem seems a bit weak and inexperienced for a team like Vancouver

        • Sensnation

Definitely! Markstrom was at one time top goalie prospect but hasn’t translated to NHL that well.

          • Jacques

Sort of like Jared except Markstrom skates better(and he’s a goalie, ouch,).

          • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

He was stuck in Florida… This is MASSIVE for him

          • Sensnation

Unless Gillis is commited to Lack. Win-win trade though, just surprising that it finally happened after Schneider is gone.

        • Sens613

Thomas and lounging sounds like an even stranger tandem!

  • FistsofNeil25

Man if Vancouver is going full blown rebuild I would happily take Bieksa or Hamhuis on the Sens.

    • Sensnation

How about the Sedins? Put them with Spezza = problems solved haha

      • Jacques

Yeah in Vancouver please. Spezza and Cowen for Kessler and Edler. Sens will even sweeten the pot.

  • Sens613

So who’s going to pump up who’s tires?

  • A-Train

Makes a little more sense that they sat him for the Heritage Classic. Funny how everyone (including me) assumed that was down to Torts being a jerk.

    • Spoons

Can’t go wrong with “Torts being a jerk”. He sold it as a hockey decision, but in the end, he’s always the jerk

  • FistsofNeil25

    Wow Markstrom and Matthias.

    • Jacques

      Why do this??

      • A-Train

Brings in a veteran to play the next few seasons behind their kids. Makes them automatically a better team. I like the move for Florida.

        • Sens613

You mean Thomas isn’t a veteran?

          • A-Train

Not the same. He was never part of the long or mid-term in FLA.

          • Jacques

Yeah exactly, pierre McGuire says Florida made a terrible trade and makes no sense.

    • cc

there has to be more.. there has to be.. look at the return miller got. Keep in mind this guy fighting for 1# spot on Canada’s roster…

      • Sensnation

Miller is considered the better goalie and Luongo’s contract reduces his trade value drastically.

      • Aaron 2.0

Sensnation’s spot on – The contract is horrendous.

    • Sandy

Sounds pretty weak return to me…,

  • Sensnation

We totally missed the boat to trade Anderson this year. Now we’re going to want to trade him next year and have to accept Conacher back from Buffalo in exchange.

    • A-Train

I feel like this is a preview of my anxiety nightmare tonight.

  • esk

best trade deadline ever..lol cmonnn sens

    • FistsofNeil25

It’s shaping up to be a good one. I just hope that the action continues to pick up. Lots of moves were made today.

      • A-Train

I’m actually a little worried about Duthie et al. Nothing’s going to top this as a talking point tomorrow.

    • Sensnation

What happened to all those claiming it was just smoke and would be boring? This is awesome entertainment, just hope the Sens are getting in on it.

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

So glad Murray moved bishop last year…… Fucking christ

    • Sensnation

Bishop as a 3rd wheel would fetch what in this market? Luongo and Miller are considered premium goalies. This goalie exchange has been building for a few years though, hard to predict it would burst to this level this year.

Not disagreeing, just saying can’t blame him too much.

  • Jordan

I dont know if the back to back games in alberta are playing a part on the sens waiting to pull the trigger on something. One thing ive learned about bm over the past is that hes so random when he makes his moves. Hopefully something big tomorrow.

  • FistsofNeil25

So wait, there was a huge issue with the cap re-capture if Buffalo were to trade Ehrhoff. The same must apply to Luongo’s contract as well, no? If he retires before his contract expires will the Canucks be on the hook for the remaining cap on his contract? If so then that’s awesome! I hope Luongo retires a few years before that contract expires just to stick to to Vancouver.

    • CUP 2014-15

Capgeek already has it. If Lou hangs em up by 2018 it cost Van 1.85 per for 4 years for example. Now we know Van is also picking up their max according to the CBA, not sure but that’s like 40% I think.

    • CUP 2014-15

The real number on the max is 15% and Van is maxing their payment on the contract.

  • Hax

So everyone seems to feel that CoCo will get claimed so as of noon tomorrow we will be down to 12 forwards. Does that mean Hemsky or Cammy are joining the Sens (i.e. no major travel needed to be ready for Wednesday’s game)?

    • FistsofNeil25

Those better be cheap pick-ups if acquired. I wouldn’t give more than a mid round pick and a low end prospect for either.

      • Hax

Agreed. Not keen on either one (though Hemsky could pay off I guess)

    • Richard Gough

I will be at that game

  • Sens613

Sports net has the panel on speaking trades.

    • Sensnation

      Thanks, much appreciated!

      • Sens613

        No problem

    • Hax

      What’s on Teletoon right now?

      • Sens613

        Johnny test! Your welcome.

      • CUP 2014-15

        Leaf highlights

        • Sens613

          Lol

  • FistsofNeil25

With all these goaltenders on the move, is there a remaining fit for Halak? Tim has to move him.

    • Sensnation

Pitt, Philly, NYI, possibly CHI. Calgary could use a lot of pieces, including goalie, but not sure if he’d be the right fit there.

      • FistsofNeil25

What about Washington? They should remember how he almost single-handedly eliminated them in the playoffs in 2009-2010 with Montreal

        • Sensnation

They should be after a goalie. Never quite sure what their plan is in nets. They get Colorado to pay a big amount for Varlamov and never get their true #1 for themselves.

          • FistsofNeil25

Just like Mike Gillis, how the hell does George McPhee still have a job?!

          • Sensnation

Agreed! Ovechkin saving his ass big time!

    • MethotToMyMadness

Calgary needs a true puck stopper as part of it’s rebuilding process. I have a sneaking suspicion he may end up with the Flames.

  • whammer44

So a year ago Nucks were Lu and Schneider and now their Lack and Markstrom…I’m guessing Kesler is gone for sure

    • FistsofNeil25

They never should have traded Schneider. They should have taken whatever they could get for Luongo long ago.

      • son of a Diefenbaker

Bobby Lu was untradable because of his zillion dollar-hundred year contract.

Vancouver is STILL going to be paying him to play for Florida for a long time.

      • whammer44

Agreed. The whole thing was a joke and a crappy way to treat a guy who took you to one game away from the cup. I’m sure they could have done a similar trade last year.

Gillis should be fired for the way he bungled the whole situation and then brings in the wrong coach for the type of team he had.

        • Sensnation

Is Gillis really going to be given the reigns for the next 3-5 years to do his own rebuild?

          • whammer44

I would have had him out last summer. Canuck fans must be calling for his head

  • FistsofNeil25

Rundblad to Chicago for a 2nd round pick haha stocking up on former Sens. Hossa, Regin and Rundblad!

    • MethotToMyMadness

He will do very well in Chicago if given the chance. Like many players in Phoenix, they didn’t give him the right opportunities.

      • aegiszx

Unfortunately, he wont get much of a chance in Chi-town. Don’t need D… not sure what Stan was thinking considering what coach Q needs is a 2nd line C.

    • Sandy

He and Peter Regin could win the Stanley Cup this season… Think about that..

    • illdistrict

      source?

      • Sandy

#Coyotes have acquired a 2nd round draft choice in 2014 from Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Dmen David Rundblad & Mathieu Brisebois.

  • whammer44

So the yotes end up with two 2nd round picks for Turris.
That trade alone gives Uncle Bryan a pass on the Bishop trade.

  • mominator

I like Cory Conacher. I want him to stay with the Sens. He is a lil, in your face zesty speed demon that plays with heart. Get rid of Cowan.

  • SoCal

You would think the sens would have paid a 2nd rounder to get Rundblad back?! Our 2nd would be better than the Hawks’

    • Jacques

Unbelievable Chicago gets 2 players again fora single pick and one is RUNDBLAD! Say what!

      • PraiseAlfie11

Rundblad is sitting in the minors, going nowhere fast.

  • WaitingSince92

Regardless of what you think of him, his name is Cowen, not Cowan. COWEN, dammnit!

This has been your Senators spelling lesson for the day.

    • esk

hahahah his name doesn’t deserve to be spelt correctly!

      • WaitingSince92

Ha! You may have a point there…

    • Yorsch

Agreed on Cowen; but the spelling assignment for this season is “intensiti”

  • Cicero

I’m guessing Conacher was a piece in a take-it-or-leave-it deal that BM pitched to Tim Murray (which was refused). So BM is floating him in the wind as a fart in his general direction.

Also, conditions in Brazil are driving up the commodity price of rubber, so Cowen for a Bag of Pucks is looking like a good trade.

  • CUP 2014-15

Well Big game tonight. Hard on the forcheck, Big win tonight for CC89, hope he nets a couple. Feeling it’s going to be a good one for Turris, Cmac. Interested to see who the back up is tonight in Edmonton.

  • esk

soo did phillips end up signing…lol

    • Aaron 2.0

Haha – I’m guessing not yet; but to the same effect, what are the lines and pairings for tonight, Chirp. Who are the scratches tonight?

      • CUP 2014-15

        Same line-up as in Van.

        • Aaron 2.0

          Thanks!

          • CUP 2014-15

Hope CC89 has a good one and gets picked up tomorrow

          • Aaron 2.0

I feel for the guy. Someone has to pick him up! He’s definitely been a fighter since day 1. Still surprised he was put on waivers today.

          • CUP 2014-15

Can’t figure that out, RFA this summer, you would think he would have brought back a pick.

  • Sandy

Sens have to win.. they have to stay close to Columbus who is beating up on Dallas

    • CUP 2014-15

Looking at CBJ sched and the way their playing, I think it’s the Rangers, Wings, Leafs that we are chasing. Jackets are looking real Good for a while now.

    • Aaron 2.0

I think Columbus is going to be a big problem for us. They’ve weathered the injury storm throughout most of the season and are finally healthy.

  • CUP 2014-15

Erat for Klesla, other pieces as well.

  • CUP 2014-15

Erat and John Mitchell for Klesla, Chris Brown and a pick.

  • Sandy

There won’t be any trades left for tomorrow at the rate they are going..

  • CUP 2014-15

Ryan Kesler told Van no to a potential move to Rangers, Sandy, your right tsn must be having a fit praying for this to stop.

    • Sandy

I guess Kesler wants a true contender… but can a true contender fit him in their salary cap?

  • Sandy

Detroit leading NJ… come on Devils.. the Wings HAVE to lose tonight..

    • CUP 2014-15

I look forward to seeing where Mtl and T.O. are after their road trips through California and the west.

      • Moudy Mahfouz

its gonna be a tight race to the end but Detroit has to lose eventually! Montreal and Toronto will hopefully fall down the standings making it even better if the Sens can go on some sort of streak

        • CUP 2014-15

No Pavel in the line up tonight for the wings but I have a strange feeling it’s MTL and T.O along with TB that fall hard.

          • Moudy Mahfouz

could turn out to be an interesting finish people keep looking at detroit but a winning streak on this road trip and we could be in the mix with Tdot Mtl and tampa

          • Aaron 2.0

I think we’d be lucky if one of these teams stalled enough to drop back into the playoff hopeful pack at this point; the runway is getting short leading up to the playoffs.

        • CUP 2014-15

I truly believe this team is going on a roll

    • Conor_smythe

we should really just be cheering for the leafs to lose, and the Sens to win..

I think I can manage that

    • CUP 2014-15

Things changing for the better, NJ now up 3-2 and Dallas with 2 quick ones in the 3rd and are now down 3-2

  • thirstytraveller

I’m sure this idea isnt new, but i’ll throw it out there for the wolves. Senators are fairly deep at centre, even without spezza. BM is looking for a winger for spezza, but why not make spezza the winger. MacLean has used spezza on the wing in a hybrid role where Zbad would take on the defensive responsibilities of the centre in the defence zone but would revert back to wing in the offensive zone. Make the role permanent. Keep spezza on the wing, he’s got a bomb of a shot. BM could then focus on a proper dman for tomorrow.

  • Spoons

Bold prediction : Conacher has a 2 point night, and will have a roughing penalty. He’ll play a career game. A least he better. Things aren’t looking good for him right now.

  • CUP 2014-15

      just saw that
Ottawa needs to win, Detroit lost

      • Aaron 2.0

Big opportunity tonight. Sens are playing good. They deserve better than a tie right now. These teams are always scary though. EDM has nothing to lose, and they know how to score. I think (& hope) we’ll be alright.

  • CUP 2014-15

Phillips – Ceci pairing is struggling tonight.

  • Aaron 2.0

Any idea if that was in?

    • Aaron 2.0

      Phew, post.

      • Aaron 2.0

Not loving the Smith line against the Hall line. They’re getting owned. MacLean seems to think they’re our best defensive option. I love the work they do when they have the puck in the offensive end. But, in their defensive end that trio is a disaster.

  • Sandy

They have already lost to the Oilers this season. Don’t make it 0-2 please — a season sweep by one of the worst teams in the standings.

  • sprucesens

We can’t make the playoffs if we can’t beat the oilers. We don’t even deserve it. I sure hope Murray sends a message and actually makes some trades. Not happy hearing we will extend Phillips, or at least wait till the offseason when he isn’t worth anything to any other teams…

  • Jesse

The Bobby Ryan interview didn’t sound positive. He basically hates being switched lines every 3-4 shift. I don’t blame him. Some of PMacs decisions he’s been making this year are mind boggling. Condra is one of our worse offensive players…so Pmac lines him up with MacArthur and Turris, whyyyyyy? I hate that our team is full of dime of dozen players. This team needs a bigger shake up than Conacher being sent on waivers. What a joke!

  • Aaron 2.0

    Talk about an important PP.

  • Richard Gough

Looking like they have given up
    What a shame

  • MikeS

well it seems only karlsson wants to win lol

  • MikeS

Wait how did Edmonton get a PP out of that?

  • Aaron 2.0

    Gryba’s an idiot.

  • Richard Gough

See you next year play off !!!!

  • Conor_smythe

wtf was conacher doing on the ice at the end of that one?

the guy gets waived by us, but we’re going to put him on the ice in the clutch?!

    • Aaron 2.0

Lol. You have to wonder what Murray thinks about these coaching decisions sometimes. What a weird thing to do, knowing your boss just put him on waivers.

  • MikeS

This team makes me scratch my head so much. Like they never show up for the weaker teams ever

  • Richard Gough

I am starting to think that we have the wrong coach for this team

    • Aaron 2.0

I think it’s fair to say he’s struggled as much as the players this year. He’s relatively new at this too. He should have a lot to think about in the off-season, IMO.

      • Richard Gough

So tell me why can’t we play like we did last season ?I don’t get it

        • Aaron 2.0

Well, last season the coaching challenges were different. There were a lot of injuries, but everybody that came up from the AHL made the most of it. This year there are a lot of players that are struggling. The team struggled as a whole early out of the gate. MacLean has had a tough time dealing with it, IMO. This was really the first time were there were expectations, and things didn’t go well.

          • Aaron 2.0

If management really wanted to make a coaching change, I could get behind Luke Richardson replacing one of MacLean’s assistants. He’s done a great job in Binghamton, and he’s likely to get noticed by some of other team eventually if not promoted internally.

    • Jesse

I’m not going to say he’s the wrong coach but what I can’t understand is why he can’t teach our players our most common mistakes. The same mistakes are repeated over and over. I want to blame Gryba on this one, but I would have been furious also. We had our chances tonight, Scrivens was pretty good. What really pissed me off was watching Hemsky wheel right by Phillips… And we wanna resign this guy? I can’t handle stupidity.

      • SENSsmile

Resign or re-sign? That is the question. I hope he resigns or gets shipped elsewhere asap. If this guy thinks he still has to more good years in him, he’s deluded, sorry.

      • Sandy

Maybe it’s the assistant coaches who are given responsibility by the head coach.
I’m all for getting more NHL experienced asst coaches and let these junior hockey coaches go..

  • Aaron 2.0

Both teams played good enough to win, IMO. Oilers made more of their chances (both teams had a lot). The positive is that management should make no mistake about what they have here. Do the right thing, and think about long-term success, not band-aids. The team doesn’t need to be blown up, but picking up rentals, or keeping around expiring contracts for the sake of pushing for a playoff spot makes no sense.

  • Dirtysweetness

Honestly, would trading Spezza at this point really set the franchise back? I love my Senators but we have to be honest with ourselves….we’re not likely going to make the playoffs.

Always hate morning after losses lol…

Essentially, posters want to replace one inexperienced head coach (PM) with another (Luke) who has arguably 0, whereas PM was at least an NHL assistant for 7 or 8 years…

PM, like our players, have had difficulty adjusting this year, but no one should at all be surprised. It was going to happen eventually, I think people just got so caught up in his 2 time jack-adams finalist hype. Many NHL coaches have an off year, it’s nothing new.

My friend Denis Potvin says Anaheim Ducks have made multiple phone calls on Jason Spezza. Still doubt he moves today. #Sens

    Oil keep half the salary?

    • Sandy

Melnyk can’t afford to pay the entire salary even though only 2 mos left.. Question is, can they get him re-signed..

      • MikeS

Going to assume no if they only paying half his salary now. That or they saved some budget for a bigger acquisition
