Top Ten Goals in Ottawa Senators History

Watching Ales Hemsky dance through the Tampa Bay defence last night, I couldn’t help but feel like I had just witnessed the most impressive goal in Ottawa Senators history.

And as I sat there trying to recall better goals in the history of the team, the list started to grow. I asked Sens fans on Twitter this afternoon and they started to remind me of goals I had completely forgotten. Ottawa has been lucky to have some incredibly skilled players over the years and the result has been a long list of highlight reel goals.  So let’s take a little walk down memory lane as we countdown the Top 10 goals in Ottawa Senators history.

HONOURABLE MENTION

Shean Donovan vs. Atlanta

Erik Karlsson vs. Pittsburgh

Antoine Vermette vs. Tampa Bay

Jason Spezza vs. Vancouver

Jason Spezza vs. Pittsburgh

Peter Regin vs. Chicago

 THE TOP 10

And now the Top 10. This certainly wasn’t easy and I expect a healthy amount of debate in the comment section below. Here goes!

10. Marian Hossa vs. Philadelphia

9. Jason Spezza vs. Florida

8. Nick Foligno vs. Detroit

7. Antoine Vermette vs. Dallas

6. Kyle Turris vs. Minnesota

5. Milan Michalek vs. Washington

4. Peter Schaefer vs. Dallas

3. Kyle Turris vs. Winnipeg

2. Ales Hemsky vs. Tampa Bay

1. Jason Spezza vs. Montreal

So there they are.  The Top 10 goals in the history of the Ottawa Senators.  Not the most significant but rather the most impressive. Did I miss any? Would you switch up the order?

Share your list in the comment section below!

This was fun to put together. There’s a pretty good chance all these embedded videos break the website but figured it was worth a try!

    • sprucesens

just finished watching them all. all excellent choices. I probably wouldn’t have the top 2 where they are, assuming you numbered them that way, but all very nice goals. I think I gotta say the spezza to turris one is tops for me. And that macA pass was fantastic. I guess its the highlight assists that seem to draw me in, because it just seems more creative or something

    • boom

Your abilty to recognize when we all need a distraction bodes well for your parenting skills….
      Well done, and thanks.

  • Sens-fan-in-mtl

    no Alfie?

    • SensChirp

I was surprised by that too. He has some of the most signifcant but didn’t find his way onto a list of the “prettiest”. Unless I’m missing one? The list is pretty flexible!

      • Sens-fan-in-mtl

        you mean like this one:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHbj53fZx2Y

i would say this should be up there, even if it was “un-spectacular”

        • SensChirp

See, if it was most significant, this would be on there. OT winner against Buffalo too. Shorthanded against Pittsburgh. These are the top 10 “WOW” goals.

          • sprucesens

yup, was just gonna say, alfie’s shorty against Pittsburgh. sure it wasn’t the most pretty, but its probably the biggest single goal score we’ve had. Yeah, it didn’t mean much, and it didn’t send us to the finals or anything, but to score in the last minute short handed to tie the game against the cup favorites? pretty incredible

          • PalladiumDrive

Can you put together “biggest goals?” It’s not like we have much else to talk about these days :(

          • PalladiumDrive

Outside of Alfie, other biggest goals would be Steve Duchesne obviously, Phillips vs Devils in ’03, Redden’s seeing eye shot in OT, Conacher vs Habs last season (maybe just an honourable mention).

        • zBernatchez

          The old tucker star fish

  • SensChirp

One that I wanted to include was a goal Marian Hossa scored in the playoffs against Philadelphia. Did a couple laps around the zone. Couldn’t find it anywhere on Youtube though!

  • thirstytraveller

Solid List. Just respecting some heritage with this one, as Isuggest Steve Do Do Do Duchene vs. Buffalo to clinch Ottawa’s first playoff birth ever. Alfie vs. Buffalo in the ECF to eliminate Buffalo.
When i get home i’m going to youtube daigle goals.

    • SensChirp

See again, both of those are on a different list of most significant. This is just the most “impressive” or “skillful”.

      • thirstytraveller

        gotcha…no Lance Pitlick! LOL

  • Corey Trevor

I cheered pretty hard for this one… and got some nasty looks from other fans, but honestly, who
goes for a slapshot on a breakaway? You never said they had to be scored by Ottawa…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Be6QDFdfcqQ

  • SensChirp

Ha. Very similar call by Dean Brown on Number 1 and number 2

  • Alex Swift

Spez vs. Pittsburgh announcer is the best “Spezza pulls Johnson out, and slides it into the open hole!” Classic.

    • Mat

      Hahahaha #hockeyporn

  • Richard Boyd

Which top 10 list will you come up with tomorrow? ;)
Top 10 hits? Top 10 funniest moments? Top 10 clutch goals?

  • Sens613

Enjoyed reliving all those highlights; thank you Chirp for taking the time to compile all of these amazing goals!

    • Sens613

Great distraction from what’s going in this season thus far.

  • The Apostle

For some reason the first goal that I always think of when asked to pick a goal is Joe Corvo bouncing it in against Buffalo.

    • SensChirp

I think I’m gonna need to do another list of most significant goals. I think that one would crack the Top 10.

      • The Apostle

The other goal I think of (and I can’t even remember who this was against) was Corvo and Heatley breaking away after they had both just come out of the penalty box and we’d killed a 5 on 3.

  • A-Train

Great way to change the channel, Chirp. Funny how Turris has been on the receiving end of two of the prettiest assists in Sens history.

More youTube lists! (though not TOO many right now….going to be a long, long offseason)

  • SensChirp

Old ones like this were overlooked. How bout the move by Daigle?!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1t1c61sZzU

    • A-Train

      What a Daingle!

    • thirstytraveller

Awesome!!! Thanks for posting Chirp! an oldie and a goodie.

  • Jacques

This Foligno goal should be up there!

  • MB

Just FYI for everyone and not to beat a dead horse but Chris Stevenson was just on the radio saying Ottawa is going to cut a lot of dead wood and Sens are going to be shopping Spezza hard.

All those goals are things of beauty and I have been there for #1 and #2, both amazing.

    • Jacques

Time is now for big changes, lots of good young players coming! Let’s get a few more good young pieces.

    • sprucesens

any actual sources, or just the same stuff that pretty much any one of us would hope would happen. nobody is going to want our deadwood though… And we just signed one of them that could have been gone, sorry beating that dead horse.

      • MB

There are lots of places that would want Spezza as their 2nd line center. Anahiem would be a prime place IMO, NYR makes sense, even Chicago.

People get so wrapped up when people have the opinion that Spezza is a bad fit in Ottawa or trash his game, he isn’t what Ottawa needs now and he isn’t the right fit as the captain or #1 center. Ottawa is not the place for Spezza anymore and even if people don’t want to hear it there are plenty of practical reasons to move him, contract status, injury history, unrealistic expectations, etc, etc, etc.

There is a market for a 70 point center with low salary… big market. A place like Anaheim he can come in, fill a role and need, work 1st unit PP time, and be out of the spot light with next to no pressure, that’s the type of place Spezza will thrive. Even in Chicago where the leadership is strong and he can just come in and play.

Spezza is the wrong player on any rebuilding/retooling team right now to be the captain and go to guy. He needs out as much as Ottawa needs him out. Wouldn’t be shocked if Ottawa got their 1st rounder back from Anaheim with another piece at the end of the day.

    • Sandy

And who exactly is coming in to fill all of the holes? What UFA’s will want to come to Ottawa after this season’s performance?

I really don’t think Hemsky stays. He will try free agency and the Sens won’t be able to match the salary.. then again he may want to go to a contending team.. which the Sens are not.
If the deadwood is gone.. then this team is re-building again. Melnyk will be happy as he won’t have to spend.. again..

      • Jacques

Uncle Bryan will sign Hemsky, he’ll trade Spezza but will keep Hemsky! Book it!

        • bluebuyyoo

Hemsky. Poor man’s Spezza that is injured more often than not.

          • Jacques

He works(Hemsky), Spezza just doesn’t have it anymore. Don’t care how many points he racks up, I watch his every move on the ice and it’s farcical! Offensive zone guys fighting for the puck one Sen against two and Spezza doesn’t even help! In the defensive zone he doesn’t even bother marking an opposing player, he’s just looking for the puck to come to him. The whole team sees this, don’t fool yourself. It’s why, Alfie bolted, cuz giggles when he came back in the playoffs last year he killed the peskiness. First game he played, Anderson stopped 50 plus shots in the double Ot game, I was there. Then two blowouts in a row. Spezza was terrible! Alfie wanted no part of that crap this year!

          • bluebuyyoo

LOL! Don’t quit your day job dude!

        • PalladiumDrive

If they are going to sign Hemsky, they should be talking NOW. Get an extension done. But I’m not sure they are even talking so he’s probably gone.

  • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Id probably swap 1 and 2 but overall I love it!

The Hemsky goal may be more WOW to me because I saw it live, the videos actually don’t do it justice.

  • Zelle

What about first time goals or goal drought ending goals?! So many goals could be displayed. I mean I think everyone loved Ceci’s first and OT winner of a then critical game.

    • SensChirp

Read the description though. A list of the most impressive goals. Not most significant. Not most memorable. It’s a list of skill and “Wow” moments.

      • Zelle

Yeah I know I mean expanding the list!

I just love seeing the Sens scoring..

  • Tim

    Matt Carkner vs Pittsburgh…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzIdiXc3NgA
made us proud down here and showed what hockey means.

  • Tim

Btw Ottawa way to fuck us on goaltending this weekend when we need wins

    • Sandy

Sorry about that.. I don’t know what the issue is with Anderson… he should just suck it up and play.. or is he pulling a Dominic Hasek?

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

Well pulling a Hasek would imply he would have made a difference… Which he hasn’t and doesn’t

    • Jacques

It’s ok the best offence in the league should be able to score one more goal than the opposition!

  • Sandy

    Sportsnet Ticker ‏@SportsnetTicker 6h

Robin Lehner has allowed 25 goals against in his last 6 games (5.56 GAA). #Senators have lost all 6 of those games.

  • Kumar

Alfie’s game winning goal against the Sabers should have been part of the list.

    • SensChirp

It’s not a list of most important/significant goals. Otherwise that goal would be number one.

      • PraiseAlfie11

Looks like most important goals is next :)

By the way, do you pay for bandwidth? ;)

        • mr.slapshot

Embedded videos use YouTube (the sources) bandwidth. You should be good.

  • Nikola Todorić

We are winning in every game…. :(

    • Sandy

      You are delusional..

  • Sandy

    B-Sens tied 2-2 after two against Norfolk….
Looking at Norfolk’s lineup.. do you recognize names like Garnet Exelby, Steve Eminger, Dave Steckel? Aren’t they like old…

    • Sandy

B-Sens win 5-2.. beating the supposed best goaltender not in the NHL… John Gibson.
Good for them. It looks like one Senators team will be in the playoffs..

      • Tcharger – Ryan-For-51

We should trade for Gibson then and give him away!

  • Jacques

    No sweat for Bingo, 5-2win!

  • Zelle

Loved the Foligno goals. He had another really nice one tonight against the Rangers.

The best part about #6 is how crazy excited Turris was about MacArthur’s pass. I have to completely disagree about the three picked for Turris though since it didn’t include my absolute favorite of his:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0Il65CQNu8

  • Zelle

I’m also going to add this one as one of my top ten personal favorites because it made so many Canadiens fans cry:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mmN5U6J8fU

  • PalladiumDrive

Love the list. When I watched Hemsky’s goal the other night, I called it the nicest goal in Sens history. I of course recalled the Spezza undressing of Souray, but I recollected Souray acting like a pilon more than Spezza making him look like one. Seeing it again, I have to agree with your selection. That Spezza goal was crazy!!!

  • mr.slapshot

Would be nice to see that excitement from 16,7,6 again. They really had some fun out there in those clips.

  • laffin681021

How about Turris’ overtime snipe vs the Rangers in the playoffs in 2012?

    • SensChirp

On a list of top 10 most significant that would be right up there. This was most impressive goals

      • laffin681021

I agree but it’s pretty impressive to snipe lundqvuist in the fashion that he did. I might think it’s more impressive because I was at the game but nonetheless an amazing goal.

  • Sensturion

How about that twitter feud with a jackass, Chirp?

    • SensChirp

Ha. So weird. I usually steer clear of that kind of thing but I was watching a super boring movie and had some time on my hands. That guy has been a problem for a couple other Sens bloggers.

      • SuperSENS

Are we talking about the guy who was butthurt over the suggestion that Virginia might lose cause they were trailing in the first half?

        • SensChirp

          That’s the one

          • SuperSENS

Figured as much. I had a good chuckle looking at that knucklehead’s website, especially the part where he claims that it’s “globally known”.

  • Greg Babstock

I think a miss is the goal that was credited to Damian Rhodes. I was actually there that night!!!! Amazing…..
