Back to Reality- Hoffman Recalled

As an entire Nation attempts to shake the cobwebs of an Olympic Gold Medal hangover, NHL fans will begin to reshift their focus to the stretch drive that lays ahead.  With just over 20 games left, the mad dash for the last couple playoff spots in the Eastern Conference is going to come right down to the wire.

For the Ottawa Senators, it begins with a game against the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night at the Canadian Tire Centre.  The Wings sit just one point clear of the Senators for that final playoff spot in the East and will begin their post-Olympic schedule the night before in Montreal.  Some huge games right out of the blocks.

Meanwhile, the Sens made a roster move late Sunday night, recalling Binghamton Senators leading scorer Mike Hoffman from the American Hockey League.  It will be interesting to see where Hoffman lines up this time around.  With the NHL trade deadline just over a week away, the timing of the move is also interesting.  Always thought Hoffman might be the type of player that could get a regular chance to play on another team.  Wonder if there are any teams interested?

Just a quick post for now but it sure is nice to be back to talking Senators hockey.  The team is on the ice at 11:00 AM this morning.  More coming after that practice.

  • Dirk-Diggler

I am pretty pumped for the action to resume. Do you think that Karlsson, Alfie etc will be ready to go on Thursday? When are they expected to be back? I know Detroit plays in MTL Wednesday night. I am going to that game as well, I hope it’s Price in net and he goes back to the bum we all know him to be.

    • Zelle

He wasn’t a bum when he stole two points from the Sens last time Ottawa and Montreal met…

      • Dirk-Diggler

He was a bum in the playoffs :)

        • Tooks

Thats the past, Price has been pretty good this year. That Gold Medal could do wonders for him this year.

          • Dirk-Diggler

            Hope not :)

          • TookieIs100PercentRight

            BANG ON TOOKS!
It’s funny how people ler the lens of confirmation tint their vision.
Anderson didn’t forget to ‘tend cos he was torched by Pittsburgh last seaon, he’s struggling this year because young defence.
Price is a fine goaltender, all the best to him except when he plays against the Sens.
            TOOKS100% OUT!!!!!!!!

  • SensChirp
    • Tooks

Well here we go, for all of you prospect hoarders, this is what happens when they dont get a shot at the big club. Not all of our prospects will make this team, even in the future. Prince is probably a nice guy and all but I really dont see any place for him on the NHL team.

You got to trade em before they get disgruntled. Package him up to Buffalo with Cowen for Cody Hodgson.

      • Dirk-Diggler

Hodgson is a good player…. And a player that Buffalo needs to use in their rebuild. He’s a C…

Why would the Sens trade for him?

But, he would be a steal for Cowen and Prince.

        • Tooks

Cuz he’s not a Tim Murray guy? Tim is gonna want to rebuild from the ground up, not saying its a good trade or not, honestly IF im Tim I dont do it, not for Cowen anyways.

          • Doc

So we take someone we don’t need because he’s not a Tim Murray guy?

            Makes perfect sense.

          • Tooks

You do know NHL players can play different positions right….just sayin.

          • Doc

When has Hodson played any position besides Center? And of course they can, doesn’t mean they would be effective.

          • Sensnation

I’m on your side Doc, Tooks has pretty much no clue what he’s spewing, but Hodgson has played RW in both Vancouver and Buffalo at some point or another. He’s a natural C, but his faceoffs leave you wanting for a top 6. Reminds me a lot of Gagner in Edmonton in that way.

          • Doc

Didn’t know that! Thanks. Never saw him play anything else myself, so I stand corrected. Still not the player I would want from Buffalo.

          • Tooks

            Lol, so I’m right…thx

          • Tooks

Well this guys seems to think so, he’s on the right track.

            Russ Bitely ‏@russbites 13 hrs
Prince is western NY kid. He has 14pts in last 12gp, +16. Outpacing last yr’s #s. Roch native would be good fit for @BuffaloSabres.

          • karlsson65

Prince and a pick or other prospect for Stafford?

          • Doc

His first comment was about Prince bolting to the KHL, now he’s talking about Buffalo. Still call BS on this guy.

          • Tooks

If your that Anal, then switch Hodgson for Moulson, he’s UFA at end of year and wont re-sign in BUF. All we would be giving up is Prince and possibly Hoffman, add Cowen to the mix or Greening/Condra. Get Moulson for a playoff push.

We dont lose much and we get help for that top line. Plus he’ll be cheap by trade deadline.

          • Doc

So you would trade Prince, Hoffman AND Cowen for Moulson who is UFA at the end of the year.

            Makes perfect sense.

          • Sandy

That’s a lot to give up to get a player for about 2 mos.. less if the Sens don’t make the playoffs.
            That’s a big waste IMO.
Prince hasn’t had a callup yet… Thought he would have had one by now..

          • Zelle

Cody played on the 2nd line in Vancouver and got disgruntled within a year. He will not fit on the Sens because at most he would be a third line center. Bad trade.

          • Tooks

You forget that Spezza will be leaving soon, he cant keep playing injured like this for much longer. Turris goes up to 1C and Hodgson could easily be 2C. But like I said, BUF probably wouldnt do it anyways, But Moulson they might.

          • NickofTime

Ottawa has Zibanejad, Smith, Grant & even SDC & Pageau, I doubt they need another centre.

          • SenaTHOR

Don’t hate Cowen(hate Subban) but he is not worth what he is being paid so there is no real trade value unless some G-manager has a gambling addiiction.

      • Conor_smythe

I really thought Prince was one of our better looking prospects in the preseason/training camp..

I think if Murray had left some room on the roster Prince would have earned a longer look

He had serious wheels and some good chemistry with Pageau and Petersson

I actually remember earlier in the season debating whether or not Chris Neil was the right fit on 3rd line wing, considering we had Prince waiting in the wings.. I stand by that argument, as I see more value having a 3rd line sniper than a 3rd line energy guy.. though I have no problems with Chris Neil’s game this season..

      • Sensnation

Cody Hodgson? That would be a terrible trade!

    • Doc

I call BS. No source, and I couldn’t find anything regarding Prince saying that. Doesn’t make sense anyways. First year pro and still under contract.

      • boom

I can’t get to that link…cna you give me a coles notes version?

    • Sensnation

Prince is 21yrs old, and only in the 2nd season in Binghamton. He’s building on what he did last year, but still not NHL ready. This sounds like bs. Who in the world is Russ Bitely anyways?

  • Tooks

Also regarding Hoffman, I hate to say it cuz I really llike the kid but I think this smells of trade bait all the way. We could very well see a couple of our B prospects go in the next weeks.

    • thepez

Could it be as as simple as Hoffman is coming up because Ryan is not ready to go?
One negative to the Olympics ending is that we have to start reading the trade Cowen posts.

      • Conor_smythe

        Ya!

..AND the “don’t trade Zibanejad” posts too

        • Doc

          You would trade Zibby? Really?

          • Tooks

Well yeah, especially if we got something good in return, like Eberle or E. Kane.

    • TookieIs100PercentRight

      GREAT COMMENT TOOKS!
Hoffman is entering Corey Locke mode, AHL All-Star but can’t crack the big club.
Now we get to see if MacLean utilizes him properly (with GOOD players) or if he’s stuck on the fourth line.
Rememeber YOU-GEEEEN was saying they needed to clear $2,000,000 salary by the end of the year so maybe they move Greening and let DA HOFF keep the spot.
      TOOKS100% OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Tyler Oakman

Interesting article on 6th Sens about this being Hoffman’s last chance with the Sens to make it. Partly because he’s a 4th year prospect, but also because he’ll have to go through waivers to be reassigned to Binghamton. With that tweet about Prince wanting a trade, We really need to package some of our guys for a Dman. With all the forwards in the AHL we have to call up, I don’t really see the point of giving up a whole lot for a top 6. Scoring isn’t our issue, defense is, and everyone knows it.

  • Deadly

I think if Prince is contemplating a move to the KHL he is not very confident in his abilities. If a first year pro doesn’t believe in his abilities enough to stick out his first contract he may be missing something in his make up and the Sens missed in their evaluation.
That being said,I doubt there is any truth to the story.
There are not many players who do not need time to develope their skills and where better than New York State.

    • Sensnation

FYI, he’s in his 2nd pro year.

  • Andrews theory

Would love to see Hoffman on a line with Zibanejad and Coacher.

That’s some crazy ass speed comin at ya!

  • Sensnation

Hopefully this Sens-Sabres trade happens sooner rather than at the last minute, as some are reporting. Would really like to get that new chemistry started as soon as possible for our playoff push.

    • Tooks

If this is truly the case, getting Moulson or Stafford woudl not cost us a whole lot. I mean Prince + Cowen, really, isnt alot. Even if we would add Hoffman or Greening/Condra. Those are all guys we can replace easily. Prince and Hoffman wont be regulars with the Sens. Keep em now and watch then bolt or trade em so they can have a chance to have a career elsewhere.

      • Sensnation

The Sens currently only have 8 NHL players signed beyond next year, of which 3 are our 3b/4th line. Add Puempel and Lazar to that too. There will be a lot of movement in this roster over the next year and a half, so it’s hard to tell who BM sees having room for or not. I’d keep Prince and Hoffman over Condra, and not going to get into another Cowen debate, but that would be a terrible trade.

      • thepez

So you want to give up Cowen to get a 2nd rate rental, Moulson, and also at the end of the season risk that he bolt? The UFA’s that are available are not worth giving up a lot.

        • Tooks

Thats why I’m not giving up alot. Cowen and some prospects that wont ever see the day here in Ottawa is not alot…Especially for a proven goal scoring winger. Who cares if he walks at year’s end, the point is to get him for cheap for a plaoyff push.

And who knows, we go deep, he gel’s with Spezza/Cmac or Turris/Bobby, Karlsson…He might just re-sign here.

          • s3nsfan

Sooooo happy you’re not the GM. Cowen has had two serious injuries. A not so great season and you’re all like “throw in the towel, he’s not worth anything”. Good thing, BM is the GM and he sees the potential, and his team drafted Cowen. I’m sure they saw more in him than what he is giving this season, other wise they wouldn’t have drafted him. I mean, it’s not like the management group in Ottawa is any good at spotting talent. I mean every year all their picks are busts, aren’t they?

          • Tooks

He might have been good in juniors, infact he was pretty damn good, thats why they drafted him. But 3 years now and only 1 avg season, and 2 thrown away to major injuries. Not sure they see much in him right now. I bet you he is discussed everyday in trade talks with the Sens braintrust in an attempt to find a way to dump him off to someone else since he is clearly damaged goods.

I mean did you see him play vs PIT? Humiliating and this year was supposed to be a big bounce back season for him with his through the roof potential…So much for that. He is not turning out to be what we expected. He aint no Doughty, Weber, Pietrangelo, hell he aint even a J-Bow.

          • SenaTHOR

Doughty, Weber, Pietrangelo, hell he aint even a J-Bow. BUT THESE ARE 6 MILLION D

          • Sandy

You want to give up 4 pieces to get a guy for about 2 mos?
            That’s ridiculous..

        • SenaTHOR

Not so much Cowen as his overpaying contract.

  • Andrews theory

Only guy I want out of Bufalo is Erhoff!

Moulson, Stafford, Hodgson are throwing away assets given our current roster and pipeline

    • Sensnation

I’d take any of those at the right price. Erhoff would be the most beneficial though, agreed, and his 2 front loaded years have already been paid off.

    • bob ray al cal don ed ken

the well rested Ryan Miller ?

    • Tooks

      Ouch Ehrhoff?
He’s a step behind most NHL D-men at this point in his career.

      • SensChirp

Not true, at all. Would be a great pick up.

        • Doc

Indeed he would be. Probably the only guy in Buffalo I would trade for.

        • TookieIs100PercentRight

          GREAT INSIGHT TOOKS!
Ehrhoff is overpaid and isn’t dramatically better than any of our starters or even middle pairing guys. He’ll be the first one run out of town by Brennan if he comes here.
          TOOKS100% OUT!!!!!!!!!

          • Doc

Weak minds think alike it seems.

          • Tooks

Yes I guess they do, hence why we NEVER had any interest in Ehrhoff……EVER. So I guess the Sens Management have weak minds.

          • Doc

Like, never ever EVER?? Oh my gosh!

          • SenaTHOR

But remember Brennan is a cretin!

      • Andrews theory

He got off to what some might call a shaky start but that’s really just a result of the other guys around him. Erhoff would significantly improve this club.

        May cost us Wiercoch though..,

    • MethotToMyMadness

Erhoff and Ott… best bang for your buck! I’d stay away from Moulson, only because he seems to be very one dimensional and he’s asking a kings ransom. Ott brings some scoring, a long with a bunch of other weapons. And I like Hodgson, he’s a great young talent. If had cheap, I wouldn’t be upset about Ottawa getting him.

  • sell the team Eugene

Has Melnyk said “I have money and am willing to spend it to improve my team” ?

Until he does , all I’m expecting is Corvo for a 7th round pick.

    • Sensnation

That won’t come until this offseason at the earliest. More likely in a year or two when he finally has the income from the new tv deals.

    • Sandy

But he won’t spend. Team will still be on a budget..

  • Dirtysweetness

I wonder what Florida might be looking in terms of trading Kulikov? He seems to me a Murray “type” reclamation project like Turris.

    • Sandy

A Russian? I think Murray would pass that one.

  • CUP 2014-15

Happy stretch drive everyone. Here we go with every game being huge again, I may be longing for that Slovinia v Slovakia match up to kill time. Well 23 left to go and needing about 30 pts, this is going to be fun.
Hope you had a good break SC. Great way to start back with a Winged wheel match-up at home followed by that afternoon, Olympic type of game time in Van. No question the lads should be going 100 k per hour every shift on Thursday to get off on the right foot. Love that we get a look at the Hoff before he is sent packing in a trade. No doubting that Murray loves his big body players and the team needs to make up it’s mind on who to keep. Smurfville includes Hoff, SDC, Prince, Petterson, JGP and we have CC89 already on the club sooooo, something has to give. Predictions for last 23 are
Spezz is rested and will return to form
Zbad moves back to Centre and drives other coaches nuts in match ups
Cody C, Takes the next step and becomes more of a weapon
Team makes a major trade at the deadline to bring in top 6 stud 24-28 yrs old.
Sens get 14 of possible 20 pts in next ten.

  • KJ

Well, according to PM, Hoffman is coming up to play wing with Zbad as Zibby is moving back to center. The way PM talked about Hoff it certainly didn’t sound like they have any plans to trade him. Not saying they won’t, as BM will make a deal if the deal is right, and we know he’s not afraid to trade someone they are high on if the deal is right, see Silfverberg.

    • A-Train

Zibanejad back to center is good news. Leave him there. Spezza, Turris, Zibanejad, Smith down the middle in whatever order you want.

      • Tooks

I prefer Mika on the wing, having him on 3C is a waste. He’s a big strong scoring winger man, with his speed and hands, watching him come down the wing gives me goose bumps.

        • Doc

How is it a waste? He’s been better at his natural position.

  • aegiszx

Pierre LeBrun said it best… Shea Weber looked like he was more motivated and excited to get a chance to play on Team Canada than the Nashville Predators.

I had no idea he also has won gold at the world championships, and world juniors to go with his 2 olympic golds. And to think, he may never actually get a chance to challenge for the cup… Nashville has him on a tight leash but I wonder if Seth Jones emerges as their top D, would they entertain offers for Shea Weber? I know the panel was talking about Trotz potentially being fired soon so the rebuild could be coming…

    • Sensturion

Sadly, I think Weber is stuck in Nashville for the long haul thanks to Philly and Nashville. His contract is ridiculous.

  • cc

Okay, it’s clear to be that the Red Wings are out of the Playoff Picture. They will have to rely on their limited youth to push for the playoffs. Are Justin Abdelkader, Gustav Nyquist and Tomas Tatar up for the Task? Sure they may have Injured Datsyuk lace up, but with Franzen and Zetterburg out – i doubt they stand a chance.

MTL, OTT, NJ before TD – if they lose these three, does Alfie get moved?

    • Sensturion

I distinctly remember a team that went through the same thing and ended up making the playoffs despite injuries. Spezza, Karlsson, Anderson, Cowen… Oh yeah! It was Ottawa!

    • A-Train

No. And he has a NMC.

      • cc

He picked Detroit because they were a possible contender, Swedish players and a great organization (best coach in my mind). Ottawa was successful because of the young talent in the system – mostly 2 goaltenders standing on their head.

If he thinks Detroit doesn’t stand a chance, does he wave the nmc?

        • A-Train

I really hate to revisit this, but he picked Detroit because he felt disrespected by Ottawa and the Red Wings org showed him some love. The “better chance at a Cup” angle was thoroughly debunked, even by Alfie himself at the CHEO newser.

          • Tooks

No it wasnt, lol. A stupid reporter asked him that cuz the Sens were on a streak or something (possibly had more points at the time). He’s not gonna answer truthfully at his own Ottawa CHEO presser…lol.

He chose DET cuz they had a better shot at the Cup (Now). Injuries fucked that up but, they are usually a good bet to make the playoffs and win the Cup, every year. Ottawa, not so much.

          • A-Train

Wow. I already regret the comment. But who am I to judge? Whatever explanation for Alfie’s departure helps tuck you in at night is your own business. “Lol”.

          • Aaron 2.0

A lot of us (me included) are prone to thinking of Detroit as a perennial contender, and as a team that successfully builds through the draft (with the cupboard always stocked). Sure, injuries have hurt that team this year, but they’re also just not as strong as they use to be. If # 11 was really just after chasing the cup, I’m sure we could all name a handful of teams that would have given him a better chance at one. The new model of sustained success now appears to be Chicago (at least for now).

    • Aaron 2.0

Det is definitely in tough now. With so few games left in the season, they still have a shot though. Even the flames looked good to begin the season before reality sunk in! Still, i’m with you in liking our chances a little more w/ all the injuries on Det. I don’t think # 11 is going to be moving.

  • A-Train

I really do not want Matt Moulson. It’s not scientific, I just get a bad feeling. Kinda like going “all in” for David Clarkson. Just seems like a bad, bad idea.

  • A-Train

Random thought on watching Olympic hockey: The NHL has too many teams. Top talent is spread way to thin.

    • cc

Ramdom thought, some people like to watch these games live.

But i agree – clean, fast paced game with top talent. Nothing better than Olympic hockey.. World Juniors are a close second.

      • Tooks

Umm, you liked the super defensive, trap style game the Euro’s play on the big ice?. Its no secret the hockey games at the Olympics were a huge letdown in terms of entertainment, they were really boring to watch. (except the women)

        • cc

gotta love that goal post. touche, the trap was a bit dull. But i found the offensive zone attacks were tactical. I enjoyed the games.

  • RUSH RLZ

Wow, watching the EK65 interview up on TSN… between doing his best “Jay” from Jay + Silent Bob impression, he also kinda guarantees we will make the playoffs! Atta boy!

    • Zelle

He must have been disappointed about getting the Silver but it’s nice to hear him be so positive about playing with the Sens and making the playoffs. Compare that with JVR and Kessel from the Leafs where they won’t be returning to Toronto until Thursday.

  • ReleaseTheKarlsson

I’m pretty excited to see how this team follows the Olympic break. Not to mention the outdoor game NO ONE SEEMS TO CARE ABOUT! I’m going, so I care, but I have not heard much about it in the lead up…clearly NHL put too many in the mix this year.

    • sprucesens

I CARE! I’M GOING! flying out Saturday morning. hopefully will be able to cheer on a win and get a new heritage jersey at the heritage classic! gonna buy my wife something senators, since she’ll cheer for them, but never really watches until playoffs. Any ideas on what name to get on the jersey? I’m thinking karlsson since he’s guaranteed to be a sen for like 5 more years at least. Could get turris, or zib too. would love ryan, but too unsure on his future. yay, either way I get a new jersey and to see a sens game. GO SENS

  • Millennium

Bizarre about that rumour that MSL asked for a trade out of Tampa after not getting on Team Canada. Would be unreal if we could get him here in Ottawa. Has another year left I think? Could fill the veterancy void nicely… What a pipe dream!

    • Gordon Ramsli

I’d do it would give us a excuse to unload some players to allow some room to promote Stone/Hoffman/DaCosta/Borowiecki

St Louis for Cowen, Greening and Prince

I think that’s fair for a older vet forward with his all respect his best days are behind him.. and with a expiring contract next year he would make for a perfect trade piece come deadline next year if we aren’t a sure playoff contender.

      So I like the idea!

Edit: St Louis is from Laval so he may enjoy a move close to home?

    • Dirk-Diggler

I am not sure what it would take to sign St Louis but for sure I’d give him a 3 year extension this summer if we did acquire him! The guy is a freak! He will continue to be productive at least until Alfies current age.

  • Inquiring Mind

Slava Voynov called out his own NHL goalie after the Americanos beat
    the Rooskies at the Olympics.

Any chance he’s on the trading block ?

Any chance Ottawa would want him ?

    • Sandy

      A Russian? I don’t think so..

      • Captain Nitpicker

        Rock Star Gonchar ?

  • MakesSens

Unfortunately for Matt Hoffman if he doesn’t “make it” this time around, I think his time with the Ottawa organization will be coming to an end. Clearly he’s done well in the AHL and has yet to be able to make the transition to make it to the big club. It would be to his advantage to try out another team, and also to Ottawa’s advantage to utilize him in a trade.

P.S. Hey Prince, I hear Filatov needs a bunk mate. You guys would be so cute together with your matching “I almost made it” sleeping bags

    • Tooks

Well if he’s contemplating a jump to the KHL, its probably $$$ icnentive, and probably mroe than he wold ever make playing in the NHL. So I think his T-shirt would say “I $$$ in”

      • Godeater

So much for it being a threat, drawback of RUSSIAN players that they threaten to bolt to the KHL…

    • Sandy

Prince has another year left on his contract after this season..

  • Miguel

is it not time that Hoffman gets a real shot at making this team?
Sorry but I feel we have way to many 4th liners playing with the Sens, and it seems we have plenty of good 2nd liners playing in Bingo,
its time to move some bodies and give some of these kids a real shot

    • sprucesens

that’s how I feel exactly. Ideally, we can use the young bodies to fill the 3rd line, and give us more of a 2a 2b setup. Zib, hoff and stone for 3rd line?
      MacA-turris-ryan
      Michalek-Spezza-conacher/stone
      Hoffman-Zib-conacher/condra

I have conacher with spezza unless we call up stone, bumping him down a spot.
On the prince rumours… maybe its a bogus claim by a random guy, so when we trade him in the next week, fans are less likely to be up in a fit about it? really wouldn’t shock me if this kind of thing happened.

Yeah, i’d like to think MacLean will give him a real shot this time, but i have my doubts. The next couple weeks will be real interesting, in any case. The Senators have to shit or get off the pot with regards to some of these (relatively) older prospects, specifically Hoffman and DaCosta. Personally, I still like Stone, but they have younger guys coming that will also be pushing for spots.

Funny, I see Hoffman just gained 10 lbs (185 from 175) now that he’s up from Bingo. (according to the two rosters) Guess that’s the extra confidence? But I do hope he does well this time.

Please let this Matt Moulson & Steve Ott talk be untrue. Those guys might have decent roles on another team, and Tim Murray should definitely be looking to unload them. But I really do not think either is what the Senators need right now.

Agreed. We are in a unique predicament with so much depth but not very strong horsepower at the top. What we need is at minimum a “B” grade forward for the top three or a solid top 4 D, not some slight boost to fritter away on the 2nd or 3rd forward lines.

      • Dirk-Diggler

Why not try and unload a boatload of B prospects and some NHL players for an A prospect or a top line player?

Thinking package anything from the following assets:
        - Conacher, Neil, Cowen, Da Costa, Prince, Pageau, Phillips, 2015 2nd, Wilkstrad, Petersson and try and sell a quantity for quality package for someone like E Kane, Gudbrannson, Ehrhoff, Eberle, Myers

        • Dirk-Diggler

Or even better St Louis! I’d sign him to a 3 year extension this summer if we could trade for him at the deadline. The guy isn’t slowing down and brings great leadership to the room!

This is exactly the tree I am barking up too. I have reservations about St Louis though, age + contract status beyond next year. I’d leave that decision to more capable Murray-like hands though if he feels it’s a strong fit.
