As I pack my things for the Dominican Republic, I once again turn things over to Don Rieber for his take on last night's win. Take it away, Don!
Silfverberg's Scoring Streak Reaches Six in Win Over Albany
The Binghamton Senators made the most of their limited opportunities on Friday night, coming from behind to beat the host Albany Devils 3-2 at the Times Union Center.
Binghamton registered 17 shots on goal for the night, two of their three third period shots found the back of the net. Cole Schneider tallied at the end of the first period and beginning of the second, while Jakob Silfverberg scored the game winning goal with 2:35 left in the third.
Silfverberg has scored in six straight games for Binghamton and has a point in seven consecutive contests.
Robin Lehner made 35 saves between the pipes for Binghamton. His counterpart Jeff Frazee stopped 14.
Much like they did in their 5-3 loss to Syracuse on Wednesday, the Binghamton Senators got off to a slow start and Albany took advantage.
With nine minutes gone in the first period, Binghamton’s Eric Gryba sat for cross-checking, giving Albany their first power play. David Dziurzynski checked Joe Whitney into the boards 26 seconds later, and found himself in the locker room after being tagged with a 5-minute major and a game-misconduct for a check from behind.
That gave Albany a 5-on-3 advantage and it took only 42 seconds for former Binghamton Senator Bobby Butler to find the back of the net, as he beat Lehner to make it 1-0. For Butler it was his team-leading 12th goal of the season.
The Devils dominated the first period with 13 shots on goal, to Binghamton’s two.
The second period was pretty uneventful until the last second, literally. Gryba let a shot go from the point that was knocked in by Schneider and hit the back of the net as the clock hit zero. Gryba and Patrick Wiercioch picked up the assists.
The officials decided to put one second back on the board, forcing a meaningless faceoff to end the second period.
The Schneider goal was Binghamton’s 12th shot in the period. They still trailed 25-14 in that category after 40 minutes, but the game was tied 1-1.
Schneider scored again 1:29 into the third, re-directing a Mark Stone shot past Frazee and giving Binghamton a 2-1 lead.
The Devils tied it with 6:39 left in the period when Butler got a fortunate bounce off the end boards that Lehner was unable to get set on. That made it 2-2.
Binghamton was stymied by the Albany defense all night, but found their way through one more time when it counted most. After a blast off the stick of Mike Hoffman was kicked out by Frazee, Silfverberg was there to knock in the rebound and give Binghamton the lead for good, 3-2.
The B-Sens are now 17-7-1-2 on the season. They remain three points behind the East Division leading Syracuse Crunch.
Binghamton’s road trip continues Saturday against the Rochester Americans, a 7:05 p.m. faceoff.
Jonathan Huberdeau is easily the most "underrated" Canadian Junior player. Only myself and bob mackenzie think so.
From what I've seen, Huberdeau is miles ahead of the play in all zones. he has no business playing junior. his hands, his skating and his passing are all impressive, but his ability to steal the puck is being hugely overlooked.
Huberdeau's game looks exactly like Jason Spezza's... except he's much better in the dirty areas
If only team canada had 1 defenceman capable of making an outlet pass (you know, tape to tape, in stride) they would be doing much better. hopefully they catch on.... it only took them 3 games to realize they were playing on a bigger ice surface
and Finally, with the end of the lockout in sight:
nobody has mentioned how amazing the new CBA looks for Ottawa. Keeping in mind that nothing is set in stone, the current framework would leave Senators in an extremely favorable position. 9 million cap space, with ability to buy out 1 player, AND sergei gonchar coming off the books at seasons end.
Considering the Senators (alledgedly) banked 14 million last season under a less friendly CBA, I would say that we're safe from relocation for the next decade.. or two
somebody mentioned corey perry a few days ago... Fuck yeah!
if Ottawa had 1 buy out under the new CBA, do we use it and if so who gets cut ? Do we need to use it ? Daugavins ? since we we didn't seem like we wanted to re-sign him anyways ? Can we use it on Butler's buy out penalty ? Interesting.
Ottawa is in a good place.
Maybe we'll make a trade with a team who wants to buyout two players. We can take on their garbage + prospect/pick/w hatever, and then buyout the player with the crappy contract. No sense buying out Daugavins as he doesn't have much of a cap hit.
Finished his time in Finland with 9 goals, 25 assists for 34 points in 30 games.
saying that he would be returning soon
For such rich ownership and an original 6 team you would not expect that... but their games are not sold out.. bad economy will do that...

Not the best stream tonight.. but better than nothing.
B-Sens up 2-0 after the first.. Grant & Cowick.
67's up 3-1 after the first.. Don't know who scored.
thanks sandy
I believe they count them differently in that a shot towards the net is counted and not just shots the goalie has to stop. He still had like 10 "nhl shots" though which is ridiculous
Can't see any point buying out Daug, his cap hit is insignificant.. ..but the idea of taking a player to dump him though certainly sounds like an interesting one...
All of the stars would need to be aligned though for that to work.
I wonder if Heatley gets bought out in Minnesota... How bout you send us back douchebag Heatley and we buy him out along with a big go f yourself
As payment for eating your CAP, we get Setogouchi or Granlund or Dumba and we'll send you a couple roster players with low cap hits, say Daugavins and Condra, maybe Greening.
Now I had the game online and watched it here and there.. but never noticed the absence of Silfverberg.
Did he miss time? Is he hurt?
Is there anything you can do about the format Chirp? I agree it's annoying the text won't format on an IPhone unless its sideways. Lehner is going to break a record for shots faced if we don't tighten up our D. I'm surprised with Richardson as coach there has been so little improvement defensively.
Thanks for the update on Silfverberg.. It was a good win for them.. much needed as Syracuse lost...
