(UPDATE 9:06 PM)- The story appears to be back up on the Globe and Mail website. The story now includes a correction stating that Turris no longer players for Karpat and has returned to Canada.
(UPDATE 6:06 PM)- Or is he? The Globe and Mail has pulled the original interview with Kyle Turris and his agent has suggested that Turris was "completely misrepresented and will clarify his remarks through a statement on the team's website.
A handful of Senators have returned to Ottawa over the past week while their European League teams are on break.
While the hope was that the NHL might be able to resolve the lockout and those guys could stay here in Ottawa and prepare for training camp that seems like a pipe dream right now. With the league taking its issues to the courtroom, there’s no reason to believe this lockout will be ending any time soon.
You really don’t read or hear a whole lot about the experience in the European Leagues but an article in yesterday’s Globe and Mail shines a little light on one Ottawa Senator and his experience to date.
Sens forward Kyle Turris has been playing, and playing well, for Karpat in the SM-Ligga but that doesn’t mean he’s overly thrilled with his time spent in Finland. A few quotes from Turris that appear in the article.
- “There’s nothing to do here. Nothing,” Turris says with a laugh. “If we’re not at the rink, we’re sitting around playing video games.”
- “The travel here is horrendous. It’s worse than junior,” he said. “We’ll fly into Helsinki then hop in a bus for four to six hours, meanwhile, we’ll make three stops on a six-hour bus trip for no reason. It’s awful.”
- “The food here is awful,” he explained. “On the road, we eat at truck stops. ABC truck stops. I’m not kidding. We file out of the bus and head off beside the highway for a buffet truck stop pregame meal. It’s ridiculous.”
You can bet Turris will take some heat for these comments. Both from the team in Finland that has welcomed him during the lockout and from fans here in North America that view the players as spoiled and greedy because of the ongoing lockout.
Turris has yet to decide if he will return to Finland in January but it’s safe to assume he’s hoping the NHL ends the lockout in the near future.
You can read the full article on Kyle Turris and his time in Finland here.
Makes you wonder if this is the "hammer" of reasoning crashing on their thick heads making them realize that they have it pretty good here and should start negotiating.
I think that it's just that those guys are North American boys, born and raised. Can't expect other cultures to be the same as here... This experience is good for them to now realize how good they have it.
Don't really hear Karlsson complaining since he is Swedish and probably actually misses home cooking or European cooking. Yes I know he's playing in Finland, but due to their proximity and relations the countries are very similar in some ways.
I love Kyle Turris as a hockey player, but holy shit, talk about putting one's foot in one's mouth.
You mean not all professional hockey leagues fly their players around first class and shack them up in 5 star hotels?!?!?!
Not very smart comments...but boy, what a release!!!!
Being locked out by his billionaire bosses allowed Kyle a taste of life in a system built to minimize the effects of winner-take-all capitalism and foster a sense of the collective good.
Clearly he hated it, but I wonder if he at least sees the irony.
The NHL provides players 4-5 star accomodations, charter flights to and from whatever city they go to, an average salary of 2.2 million, first class arenas and training facilities, top medical care, etc....And the players are refusing to accept the deal on the table.
However, they go to Europe and in cases like Spezza, they basically have to pay their own way to play. Guys like Semin are playing in russia for $1600 a month, while bitching and complaining when he was in Washington about only making 6 million.
It's all making sense to me now. If I were the owners I would cancel the season right now and in fact keep them locked out next year as well. I can almost guarantee these guys begging to come back on hands and knees and the owners would get everything they would want. But knowing the owners they would screw that up as well.
This whole lockout is an absolute joke.
This is where Bettman steps in and says it like it really is.
No BS.
Here is the best offer we will give you to start in Jan.
if NO.
then the offer will go down by 25% to start next Sept.
answer still NO.
Then by next Jan the offer will be 35% less, and so on.
let the spoiled brats realize that this nonsense is a complete joke, and the next agreement will be signed for 15 years.
Enough is Enough, it is the players that want their cake and eat it too/

the bus ride thing is no big deal. everyone rides a bus once in a while
My take: Kyle DID make these comments, but he didn't think he was doing so on the record.
This writer's career hasn't made much of a trail online. I'll bet he stumbled into an "interview" With Turris but didn't disclose he was going to sell it as a story to the Globe.
But as you all said. It is nice that these guys get a shot of reality once and awhile.
I have more allegiance to Turris than I do to the fuckin Globe and Mail. So Turris, my brother, welcome home dude. Keep poppin 'em chedds style, and we'll love ya.
MULLET TREE UPDATE: I decorated the Mullet-tree with PBR cans. It's so top shelf, I rock a half-chubber every time I look at it. Jungle fuckin Bells!
Merry Merry.... especially YOU Mary...

upon. Otherwise, owners and players, please shut up.
I am sick and tired of all of you. You are robbing me of
the game I love. Stop..........N OW!!!!!!!!
http://www.oulunkarpat.fi/uutiset/artikkeli/turris-kaikille-jota-asia-koskee.html
I think the hack writer embelished the interview by a lot. I'm sure Turris was only home-sick.
i absolutely love it when players speak like they're human beings! what ever the issue is. at least they say something!
I'm tired of hearing "I'm really happy to be here" and "i'm willing to play whatever role the team needs me to play" and "we just gotta play our game". all of course in an incredibly monotone voice...
don't criticize him for speaking his mind... whether is was direct quote or it was a douche reporter.
Speak your mind, but be professional. These guys are paid to be professionals.
How would you like it if you bitch and complain at work about the sh!tty jobs you have to do, or things don't go your way, and the project that should've taken a day or two, is now extended to a week? You gonna bitch and complain about that to the public? And what happens if your boss or co-workers hear about it?
Yes, be human, and everyone is entitled to have their opinion. I'm sure there's truth to everything Turris has said, but I think he's professional enough to not shit on the team and organization that accepted him in Finland.
Turris could've said, "Bus drives about 6 hours, and we have 3 stops. We stop at truck stop to eat. Sometimes it gets boring on the bus"
Writer hears it as: Bus drive sucks. Shitty food from truck stop. I should be flown in a private jet to go to my games."
It's a case of the he-said, she-said, he-said bullshit.
What the hack-writer hears: "Finland is so sh!tty and boring. There's nothing to do. I always play video games and its boring. My room is crappy. This place sucks."
Writer is painting a story to sell a story.
Don't believe this at all. Turris has a history of whining; whined in Phoenix then when he got here (Ottawa) he said it was really cold complaied to Phoenix. Now he's griping about diner food, long bus rides and lack of entertainment.
Guess what Kyle, you're luck to have a job that pays you this well, especially considering you're a second to third line centre on a great team.
What Turris said was inappropriate but let's just hope he doesn't throw any fellow Senators under the bus...
TOOKS100% OUT!
Turris whining in Pheonix? He was what? In the system for 3 years or so? Was it not his agent who "whined" about it? All I got from him was, he wasn't being used to his full potential in Pheonix. He "played his role" and did his best with it.
Doesn't sound like whining to me, but more like, "I can do better than this. I'm just not being given the chance to do it."
He-said, she-said, he-said.
I can be just like that writer too, except I'm painting a positive image to the situation.
The more this happens hopefully the more the players will realize they need to take a step forward and offer up a deal.
Can't sign a CBA without the union agreeing on what they must have, easy as that....
NHLPA needs to Make a fuckin offer to the NHL that meets half way on the remaining issues.
An "official" offer, not something scribbled on the back of a napkin with the waitresses lipstick.
Players make an offer that is reasonably close to what owners have asked this deal will be signed within a few days.
Fehr is a plague.....anyb ody hear what the Pistons attendance has been in the nba since the lockout....smar ten the fuck up already!
I see this at home all the time...my wife asks me my opinion on something: Do you like skinny jeans?
I give my opinion: Nah, I think it makes skinny girls look fat and ugly.
She gets upset. Well f****!!! Don't ask for an opinion if there's a chance you won't like the answer. People have opinions, and I don't think any of his were crazy. What there's only daylight from 10am to 2pm...yeah...gu ess what...some people don't like that...whatever...
I hate it when they interview players and they all say the politically correct monotone answer that we all heard a thousand time. some call it "professional", I call lying...and in my book lying is wrong.
who knows how much the writer added in or left out, I'm sure if you ask turris if he was thankful for the team taking him in he will honestly answer yes but it ended up not being my cup of tea, if you ask him if he met some cool fins...he'd honestly answer yeah, most were cool, except that one guy, i can't pronounce his name though...but he was a dick....and guess what...that dick guy...he knows he's a dick...everyone knows it...he's a dick, that's not news!!! Every team has one, we have neil...and we love him!
/end of rant!
Oh...and took: you've wandered in the wrong forum again. I'm sure someone can point you to your leafs forum if you ask them nicely.
D - I - V - O - R - C - E
She knows that I'm dead honest with her because I love and respect her, and would never EVER lie to her. I expect the same in return...honest y & respect is what keeps us going strong (she bought the damn skinny jeans anyways)
So the writer fudged some of the details, they do that to sell stories all the time. All Turris can do is say he didn't say it that way and then it's done. You see this all the time.
I do wish that reporters these days had to write a story based on a recorded conversation and if need be, make the recording available to all if/when something like this happens. That would end the whole he said, she said, bull that we often hear about.
The Evander Kane photo on the other hand is pure gold!

I guess both sides still have plenty of money to blow in Vegas before a CBA will be signed ;)
Do you guys really want to know what's on Spezza's mind? Really? Cuz as much as I like the guy, I don't think he'd have super nice things to say... Especially since we the fans, have put him through so much sh*t over the years. Player's don't get paid to talk, they get paid to play, and talk to each other. It's probably better that way anyways.
Careful what you wish for... the truth isn't always pretty!
haha no kidding, the guys is a top ten forward in the NHL and they've given him nothing but grief. and he actually WANTS to play in Ottawa which is a rare thing these days.
I personally never have or never will boo the guy, espcially after a tough playoff loss.
I'm sure spezza knows that there are many fans like you and I who love him on our team, or else he would of moved on by now (why would you want to play on a team when you are hated by EVERYONE after all). I'm sure alfie sat the poor boy down a few years ago and gave him a little talk explaining him the story about the flowers and the haters.
I don't think his "truth" would be that ugly (maybe flipping the bird to the haters...that's all)
Yup, it is currently in development. Hope to have an update tonight. Will keep you in mind if we need to do some testing. Thanks!
Agreed, although I'm sure during the fiasco a few years back in the playoffs where he supposedly was upset and wanted out, there were some fans probably cheering... Which is why I don't understand the idea of giving players NTC. I mean, I think once a GM approaches you for a trade, the relationship stops there... I'd feel super awkward coming into the dressing room the next day after veto-ing a trade. It's like going into your office knowing that your boss is going to fire you, or is trying to fire you.

Try that. Not sure if it's live tonight >
Thanks!!! My hero.
And Shane Prince wow he's gonna find himself playing in Ottawa soon if he keeps this up
21 games - 7 goals - 7 assists + 13
HMMMMMMMMMM !
