Even with Robin Lehner and Mika Zibanejad looking on with injuries, the BSens have dominated each of their opponents. While Lehner is expected to star on Saturday night, you have to appreciate the play of Bishop while Lehner was hurt.
With another Binghamton game on the docket tomorrow night, we welcome back Don Rieber for his take on Friday's record setting win. Take it away, Don!
Binghamton ties franchise mark with win over Portland
The Binghamton Senators skated to a convincing 6-1 win Friday night over the visiting Portland Pirates and in the process tied a franchise record, with their ninth straight victory.
“I just found out about it yesterday,” said B-Sens coach Luke Richardson, when asked about the franchise mark. “I don’t hear (the players) talking about it. I think they’re just enjoying playing and winning. We talk about focusing on the task at hand and that’s the next game.”
“It’s a great streak, but you gotta take it one game at a time,” said goaltender Ben Bishop. “We’re not really looking at it as nine straight going for 10 straight, we’re just trying to win one period at a time and we’re doing well so far.”
Pat Cannone and Patrick Wiercioch each had two goals and one assist in the victory and Bishop earned his fifth straight win, coming up with 40 saves on 41 shots.
Portland’s Brendan Shinnimin did his best to spoil the party, scoring a power play goal 6:10 into the game. David Dziurzynski was in the box at the time for Binghamton, called for hooking. Shinnimin’s goal came 25 seconds into the man-up, on a deflection of Alexandre Bolduc shot from the left circle.
The B-Sens answered 29 seconds later, as Cannone stole the puck and skated in, beating Portland netminder Mike Visentin clean, making it 1-1.
“I just got a turnover in the neutral zone and brought it wide,” said Cannone. “I just wanted to get a good shot at his pads and I was fortunate enough to sneak it through the five-hole.”
The first period saw Portland fire 15 shots at Bishop, while Visentin saw 10.
Binghamton got the upper-hand for good in the second period, as Cannone struck again 5:33 in, as he took a centering feed in front from Jakob Silfverberg and knocked it home, giving Binghamton a 2-1 lead. Mike Hoffman got the second assist.
“Hoffman made a nice pass to Silfverberg who threw it to me in front,” said Cannone. “I just wanted to get a stick on it and we were fortunate enough that we got it to go in.”
Cannone showed his unselfishness later in the period when he passed up an opportunity, giving the puck up to Corey Cowick, who blasted one that was kicked out by Visentin. Hugh Jessiman was waiting on the doorstep and put home the rebound, to make it 3-1 at 13:18 of the period.
The Binghamton power-play, which has struggled mightily so far this season, found the mark on two consecutive chances in the third period.
The first one came on a weird sequence, as a Portland player behind the net had pushed it up and forward, causing Visentin to leave the crease. The whistle had not blown, as the net came back down, just as Wiercioch had let a shot go that found the back of the net.
Referee John McIssac originally waved the goal off, but after review, the call was reversed and it was a 4-1 Binghamton lead halfway through the third. B-Sens captain Andre Benoit and Jessiman earned the assists.
Portland clearly wasn’t happy after that goal and things got interesting from there. Bishop was plowed into a couple minutes later by Darian Dziurzynski, brother of Binghamton’s David. It was clear that Dziurzynski had no intention of avoiding the hit and Binghamton’s Fredrik Claesson came to the defense of his goaltender, whose helmet was knocked off in the collision.
With Darian Dziurzynski getting the extra penalty, Binghamton went back to the power play. Silfverberg scored 2:24 after the Wiercioch goal, to make it 5-1.
“I’m gonna have to talk to Dizzy,” said Bishop with a laugh, referring Darian’s brother David. ”That’s his brother, so maybe dizzy can take care of him.”
Cannone would not get a chance at the hat trick, as things got chippy, to say the least. With five minutes left, Chris Conner and Eric Gryba got into it, both getting fighting and 10-minute misconduct penalties.
Cannone and Mathieu Brodeur followed that up 45 seconds later, by getting fighting majors. Those calls ended the night for all.
Binghamton’s final goal was an easy one for Wiercioch. The original shot came off the stick of Cowick and was saved by Visentin. Instead of holding for a whistle, he decided to flip the puck out in front of him and Wiercioch was there to knock it in and make it 6-1.
“We just wore them down,” said Richardson of the opponent after the game. “We’re playing 60 minutes the right way and teams are giving up because we’re playing with speed and we’re playing with passion and we’re doing it every shift. They enjoy doing that and realize that when they do that they will have success. It’s a lot easier winning than losing.”
The B-Sens (13-4-1-1) still sit two points behind Syracuse in the AHL’s East Division, but the Crunch have played two more games.
Binghamton will go for a franchise best 10th straight victory tonight, when they host the Norfolk Admirals at 7:05 p.m.
When asked if Robin Lehner would get the start against the Admirals, after missing the last few games, Richardson was non-committal.
“The plan was to get both of them into a game this weekend, but we always re-evaluate after the game,” he said. “We’ll double-check in the morning and go from there.”
Game notes: Mark Borowiecki was scratched from the lineup Friday, with what Richardson said was an upper-body injury.
“He’s probably out tomorrow,” he said of Borowiecki. “We’re probably looking at the same lineup, as long as everybody’s healthy.”
Normally, you'd expect a couple guys to carry the load but this team has 4 lines that can put the puck in the net...
If the nhl season ever gets going again, I wonder if Dacosta might be one of the guys that gets moved? Ideally, we'd be able to keep him in the ahl for a few more year to give our talented wingers coming up a high end center but if it becomes apparent he's ready for the show, they'll have to move him.
Gotta love Wiercioch's development this year, Cowens injury maybe a blessing in disguise from that stand point. Looks like he's really stepped up and is likely benefitting playing under Richardson's mentorship.
Rogers is covering some of the Ottawa 67's games, and Sportsnet could cover some Binghamton games.
I think that's just wishful thinking. If Sportsnet did decide to broadcast BSens games it would definitely take some of the sting out of this lockout, but I just don't see that happening.
They'll broadcast Marlies and possibly Bulldogs games, but us Sens fans will be out of luck
1- Length of CBA ( NHL 10yrs - NHLPA 8 yrs)
2- 5 Year Contracts ( 7 year if re-signing own player )
3- Buyout of players to reduce payroll, and get under salary cap.
All other areas have been discussed and agreed to by both parties.
Since the NHLPA made last proposal, and that it was rejected by the NHL, it is up to the NHL, to present a revamped proposal, focusing on the 3 key issues to arrive at an agreement between the parties.
The proposal should then be voted on by all Union Members,
once Donald Fehr has requested such a vote !!
Drop the puck before Christmas and save the hockey season !!
I can't find any statistics on this but Bingo must be one of the youngest teams in the AHL, or we certainly must have the most rookies, or the least amount of roster players with solid NHL experience.
Regardless off all that, this team is a product of great drafting by Murray and his amateur scouts, and a few slick signings to bring in solid AHL veterans like Benoit, Eckford, and Jessiman.
I won't forget to mention that we likely have the best goaltending tandem in the "A". I mean Lehner has been absolutely lights out, but if he struggles or gets injured, fear not, we can just throw Ben Bishop between the pipes, a guy who many pundits believe is ready to be a starter in the NHL. No big deal.
And then there's Luke Richardson. these players must love playing for him. He's a huge reason why the BSens are having so much success, just like the Stache was last year with the Sens.
A good coach goes a loooong way.
This is something that won't happen. Fehr will never bring a proposal by the NHL to a vote by all union members. I wish he would though. I'm pretty confident that if the most recent proposal by the NHL this past week was voted on by all members of the union, that the deal would have been accepted and this lockout would be over.
There's no way the union is united.
Obviously PM's system and style is a bit different than the BSens, but they're similar enough. With each game, I'm getting more and more excited. For those doubting Silf, fear not. He will be a stud, playing on our top lines soon enough...
It still amazes me that these guys (Silf, Lehner, Cowen, Hoffman, Cowick) were all from the 09 class. And the fact that at least Silf/Lehner/Cow en are bonafide NHL stars... Not to mention that aside from Cowen, the rest were drafted much later... Although I still wonder what if wouldve been like if we drafted Magnus Paajarvi-Svenss on instead... He has all the potential, he's just playing in a real terrible system with the Oils.
Murray really is doing an outstanding a job. Going even further to 08:
Karlsson
Zack Smith
Borowiecki
Wiercioch
Grant
Not to mention Puempel, Prince, Noesen, ZBad, Pageau, Claesson, from the '11 draft.
Sorry to go down memory lane here, haha! But the future is bright. It's hard to believe that there was a time when even fans were unsure where the Sens were going... Last season, and the rebuild, has given fans a true sense of optimism... and we can see the light already. We're in a great position because even if our first rounder doesn't pan out, the second rounders were just as good and have as much potential to succeed. The bottom feeders (Jackets/Isles/ Oils) could learn a thing or two from us!
The three things they are fighting for help apx 5% of NHL players who coincidentally take about 40% of the NHL payroll.
For the sake of getting this shit show finished, I'm hoping they simply compromise.
Bump variance of contracts to 10% from 5
Bump contract length from 5 and 7 to simply 7
Leave cba term at 10 years to show good faith to fans and sponsors.
Drop the god damn puck!
Exactly! For evidence of PM's system look no further than the numbers being put up by the likes of Benoit, Wiercioch and Eckford.
In Maclean's system, the defenceman are expected to contribute more often of the offensive side of things. They are encouraged to move the puck quickly, get more shots through to the net and jump into the rush when given the opportunity.
So far Eckford, Benoit and Wiercioch are all in the top 5 for goals and points amongst Bingo skaters. Wiercioch and Benoit have 7 goals a piece while Eckford has 5.
To put that into perspective, Wiercioch had a total of 8 goals in the past 2 seasons combined.
GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!
INDEED !
Assuming that this NHL season is cancelled (my prediction)
and that next season isn't I can only make a weak guess as
to what the Opening Night Lineup might be in October 2013
Here are the highlights:

It was the first time I saw Turris score a goal going five hole lol. Interestingly Karlsson was on the ice for that goal, and from the looks of it Karlsson let Turris have that goal.
Hopefully Zibanejad gets to play today, I mean he actually had his Wisdom teeth pulled out like 2 weeks ago, and from experience throat infections don't last more than a week once you go on antibiotics, I read that he got the throat infection 1 and half week ago.
You may be right, and I wish he would be in there as well, but I think its likely he lost some weight and got pretty weak. May just take a bit of time to get back to normal. I heard that tonight's lineup is the same as last night.
TSN won't even fucking report on the Binghamton Senators, so any TV exposure would be a surprise.
If TSN was a person, I would donkey punch it.

Not so fast. NHL agreed to throw in $100M Make Whole money in exchange for the issues you mentioned. Since NHLPA don't want to give in on those issues $100M is off the table so they also have that gap to deal with.
You sir, are the king of kings!
B-Sens lost 3-1.. winning streak over.
Not the best game by them tonight...
Saturday nights Sportsnet usually does brooadcast AHL games... but of course.. none for Binghamton.. unless they are playing the Marlies or the Bulldogs.
Lower-Body Injury
Thanks for that

Now has his own regular segment on Wednesdays on The Drive. Ironically, is brought in as a sports expert, as Shawn Simpson, a recent NHL executive, is asking Stoodley NHL lockout-related questions. Evidently, either the world is upside-down or the Team1200 are really desperate to fill time. Verifying his unmatched ego, the guy plays the insider role with a straight face and proceeds to spend an entire segment listing his buddies (coworkers) who went on a Boston trip and slept on the docks. Stoodley is the most pompous, phony, self-promoting b.s. artist out there. Everything this guy says is 100% unnatural with a pretentious vibe. The poster child for Ottawa media d-bags who view themselves as talented celebrities. Buddy, you’re a co-host of an embarrassingly insipid and inane local 6am TV show (with no local competition) aimed at the half-awake and simpleton audience that could – and very well should – be canned any day. And drop the creepy whispering, there’s a reason nobody else in radio or TV does it.
