Initially it was reported they would meet prior to the league’s Board of Governors meeting scheduled for 11:00 AM but both sides decided to push that until this afternoon. It’s not entirely clear where negotiations go from here but according to a tweet from Nick Kypreos this morning, the NHL is expecting the NHLPA to make a proposal.
With optimism abound, all the experts continue to preach patience. There is obviously still work to be done between the two sides before a new CBA is signed, sealed, and delivered. The expression “don’t get too excited” has been repeated multiple times by both the NHL and the NHLPA.
You know what? Screw that.
I’ll get as excited as I want to get. Maybe I'm setting myself up for disappointment but as someone who has followed the CBA process closely, I'm used to it. And really, the owners and players should be happy that there are still fans that are excited about the recent progress. The league has given its fans so many reasons to be upset over the past few months, that some are willing to cling to this glimmer of hope.
More news is expected over the course of the afternoon. Will pass along updates on this post and in the comment section below.

- In some non-CBA related news, today is Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray’s 70th birthday. Murray and Melnyk are both in New York City today for the Board of Governor’s meeting.
The NHL at this point reminds me of that relationship we've all been in, where you fall hard for someone and ALL your Friends and Family are telling you it's a bad idea. But you don't listen, you go forward with it. Only to find out later it was a bad idea. Urg!!!
Until then fuck both the NHL and the PA.
Yup, I can support this stance. Really think the majority of fans, in Ottawa anyway, share this opinion.

the gap is so ridiculously close that it would be shameful not to push for a final resolution.
lets' hope they work out a compromise and sign a deal for 10 years.
as for all those saying the players are over their heads in the negotiations; the time for bluffing is over what they need is what is apparently happening. a couple people from each side that know what the true sticking points are. cut out the crap, shoot from the hip and getter done.
Ill be excited to sit at SBP for their second home game. I personally would love it if fans every decided as a group to not show up to their respective home teams first game. Watch it from home instead but send a message to the nhl that the fans are not happy about this continuous loop of playing for 5 years before having another lockout.
But, Puemple and Ceci could get invites.
But, there is only so many times that we can get ignored by the hot popular girl, before we turn our attention elsewhere, to other entertainment that respects our devotion.
However to make our beloved Senator owner Melnlyk be the only one left paying the price by us not showing up to games, would be absolutely sending the wrong message.
The player will get paid regardless of us showing up or not (which again comes back to risks), so if we stay away, it is only the Senator franchise and owner who pay that price... Not fair in my opinoin
The players share just as much if not more of the blame, and they should also be the ones who feel our frustration as well,

I understand the POV and would join in if I honestly felt it would damage the NHL and PA even one little bit. I do think it's important that we realise that this isn't all the fault of the NHL, the players have to take some of the blame.
The problem with boycotting a game at SBP is that the only people that are really damaged (although probably not a great deal) would be the Ottawa Senators organisation.
They can't do that.. can they? Have the fans so excited that the end is near only to 'rip our hearts' out again?

Not all players have multi-million dollar contracts (both on ice and in sponsorships/en dorsements). Guys like Daugs, Neil, Smith, actually the majority of Sens, make their money from Eugene. I don't recall Karlsson or Alfie having endorsements... I think Spezza is with Reebok, if I am correct.
I feel most bad for players like Neil who worked so hard to get here, and while he's no stud, is loved by the entire organization.
Fans can boycott the Sens, but for THIS organization, the players and Eugune will feel it, more so than the Leafs (who are worth a BILLION now... compared to Sens $320M).
On another note, great to read all those BSens recaps! Sounds like the team is coming together really well and what a return by Da Costa this past weekend! GO BSens GO!!!
essentially the NHL logo with the word greed. I'd say a great way to show displeasure would be to buy one of these t shirts for anyone considering buying a jersey... let's get a ton of them in the stands for opening night and as many games as possible. this will get picked up with tv coverage and drive home a message.
as for the post above about our world junior team suffering in the event the lockout ends... this is true for any legit team contending... usa, sweden and russia all have some signifcant pieces that would be expected at camp instead of the juniors if this happens.
pretty sure russia would miss yakupov as much or more than we'd miss the nuge.
Even though Chris Neil is not a 'star' on the Sens we can't disregard his value to this team. He does make a difference.. in his own way. His passion is next to none.. Sometimes he does go overboard.. but he is a valued member of this team. He plays for the logo on the front...not the name on the back..
Do you want to bet on that?
Also.. interesting update from Travis Yost. The NHLPA made an offer to the Owners after the BOG meetings. The Owners have been looking at it for over an hour.. based on the timing of the information.

They better! I doubt both kids will make the jump in the NHL even through next year so they could use all the playing time they can get. I just hope Puempel will get a chance to play on the wing of Spezza before Spezza ages and retires. To me, this is the last kick at the can, and hockey in the NHL, should start Dec 19 or Dec 21. Otherwise, we can conclude, that Bettman will cancel the whole season !

In regards to the dark text. It looks as though the changes to text color didn't make the transfer over to the popup comments. Should be fixed in a few minutes when the site cache clears.

Apparently after taking down the NHL podium after Bettman's 'little speech'... it's been put back up again..
That damn podium stole the show last night.
It still baffles me that these two (Bettman and Fehr) have been meeting off and on since the lockout started and got nowhere, like two kinds fighting over candy in a school yard. But you force them out of the room and let the people who are really affected by the lockout discuss options and things start to move in the right direction. Is that telling anyone ANYTHING at all?
I'm liking the new site Chirp, but beyond color, what is this about a pop-up box that was mentioned? I don't see that?
Someone said they saw your logo get cut in half, I saw that the first day I used Chrome, but it was gone soon after and hasn't happen again. Never saw the issue in IE when I looked. I expect there will be differences between Chrome and IE anyway as the site progresses, like always. If something comes up, idea or problem, I'll be sure to comment about it.
Only a few issues need to be resolved, and we could see NHL Hockey very soon !!

The pop up box is simply the pop up comment section rather than the one right below the post. It has been altered to match the format used in the comment section under each post.

I actually like the yellow against the dark colors on the site, it's a nice contrast, easy to see. You also see yellow in the Latest from below the add comment page, as well as a majority of buttons and links, such as back to top. Then again, I've always been a fan of Yellow in any situation. That along with Red, Black and White. Go Sens Go!!!

In the end, not going to SBP hurts only the franchise and Melnyk. Fehr could not care less, and unfortunately the players will still make their paycheques, regardless of wether we boycott or not.
Question becomes how do we show our frustration without hurting our team?

Seriously, they blame The NHL for three work stoppages then dispute a long term contract that would see steady work for a minimum of 8 years.
As for term of contract, how many bad long term contracts do we need to witness before these knuckleheads understand they need to be eliminated from the game. The reality is they actually take money out of other players pockets because of th extended hit on cap space.

The NHL agreed to leave UFA at age 27. Arbitration to stay the same as before.
UFA contracts no longer than 5 yrs.. BUT teams can sign their own UFA's for 7 yrs. The variance is still there.
NHL increased the 'make whole' to 300M -- with actually 250M going to 'make whole' and 50M to player pensions.
They want a CBA of 10 yrs with an opt out by either side at 8 yrs... so in a sense it's an 8 yr CBA.
So please tell me what is so bad with this offer? Do you think if this offer was presented to the Union as a whole.. it would be accepted?

Haven't seen a breakdown.. but I would imagine about 60% of NHL players have contracts with 5 yrs or less terms..
The players now want Donald Fehr back into meetings.. so that means Bettman also. So now do these negotiations take a real bad turn?
The NHLPA now also wants the mediators back.
It appears as an outsider watching all of this.. that the NHL has moved a lot off their initial offer.. please tell me what the players have done to move off their offers?

I believe the reason Bettman isn't at tonights discussion is because he knows it is completely futile and the nhlpa isn't giving an inch.
It's this type of attitude that will cancel this season and quite possibly next...the owners aren't going to give anything in addition to what the players already have EVER because frankly, they have too much!
how do you not understand that the last contract is over? Not sure why you don't reference the contract before that one and the contract before that one. Record revenues yet most teams lose money, it's a pretty simple lesson in basic economics.
Further to that, the NHL realized it was going to take more than one cba to get things where they needed for viability.
Funny we haven't heard much out of guys like Vanek, Dipietro or Kovalev who were all players at the cornerstone of most contractual problems.
these are without question the best treated athletes on the planet and it isn't a question of owners not wanting to pay them, it's a question of financial balance and sustainability.
