Over to you, Don!
B-Sens celebrate Thanksgiving with a win
The Binghamton Senators got 46 saves from goaltender Ben Bishop and winger Jakob Silfverberg contributed with a goal and an assist, leading the home team to a 3-2 win over the visiting Toronto Marlies and making Thanksgiving that much happier for the majority of the 3,052 fans in the stands.
There were more than a few in that crowd cheering for Johnson City native Jerry D’Amigo, who got to play in front of the hometown crowd, as a member of the opposition.
“We tried to approach the game just like another game,” said Binghamton coach Luke Richardson. “It’s a big holiday down here and it’s a great tradition. We wanted just to let that Thanksgiving spirit in the stands to kind of filter down to us, instead of us thinking about it and doing it. It was great; we got off to a good start with a two goal lead and used the building to our advantage.”
Shane Prince got the home fans on their feet early in the contest. Prince, who scored his first AHL goal in last Saturday’s win over Rochester, picked up right where he left off, getting his second tally in as many games 2:22 into the game. He sent a shot up and over Toronto goalie Ben Scrivens, giving Binghamton a 1-0 lead. Silfverberg and Pat Cannone earned the assists on the goal.
Binghamton has been successful shorthanded this season, scoring a league-leading six goals with a man in the penalty box. Thursday, they showed they could score four-on-four as well.
With 13:29 left in the period, Hugh Jessiman and Nazem Kadri were each sent to the box for roughing. Early in the sequence, a Marlies player went down and Silfverberg found himself all alone on a breakaway. He streaked in on Scrivens and pushed it home, making it 2-0.
“This game was my best so far in Binghamton,” said Silfverberg. “For me it felt nice to have a couple points and get the win. Every game I learn something and feel more and more comfortable out there.”
Silfverberg now leads the team in scoring, with three goals and six assists.
Binghamton just missed adding to their lead late in the period, when Mike Hoffman did a 360, while passing the puck to Cannone, who sent a blast just wide of the net.
Bishop saw 14 shots in the period and held Toronto scoreless through 20 minutes. Binghamton had two of their 13 shots find the back of the net.
In the second period, Toronto turned up the heat and closed the gap, as Carter Ashton scored 1:06 in, shortly after Binghamton killed off an abbreviated Toronto power-play.
Bishop would be under fire all period, with Toronto getting the better of the offensive zone play. He was up to the task, making 19 of 20 saves in the period. Many of those could’ve easily given Toronto a lead coming out of that third period.
The effort of Bishop in that period was not lost on Richardson, but neither was the struggle that his team had on both ends
“I think it started around the end of the first period,” he said. “We started turning pucks over and we stopped moving our feet. We gave up too many odd-man rushes and too many chances. That kind of happened to us last game too, so it is something we have to look at because we can’t ask our goalies to do that every night, even though they’re probably one of the strongest tandems in the league.”
Bishop made one of his best saves of the night with 15:17 left in the second, on a point-blank shot from Ashton. He snatched it out of the air and denied what would’ve been the tying goal.
Binghamton managed just seven shots in that second period and was lucky to get out of there with a one goal lead.
In the third, Binghamton benefitted from another 4-on-4, as Binghamton’s Andre Petersson was whistled for slashing at the 4:23 mark and Toronto’s Ashton follows 28 seconds later, as he was tagged for goaltender interference.
It took just 46 seconds for Binghamton to get the insurance goal they needed, as defenseman Patrick Wiercioch went coast-to-coast, weaving through a couple defenders and beating Scrivens all by himself.
“That goal is probably gonna overshadow one of his best defensive games of the year,” said Richardson. “He’s playing more physical, he’s taking charge, he’s playing a lot of minutes and he did a great job. He’s an offensive talent and it’s nice when you play that hard defensively to get the chance to shoot the puck and score.”
The Marlies had a golden opportunity with 5:20 left, as they had 1:32 of power-play time. The defense stepped up and Bishop made the saves he needed to keep the Marlies off the board for the time being.
They did solve Bishop with 1:30 left in the game, when Matt Frattin beat him, but that was as close as the visitors would get, as the defense clamped down and Bishop made some key saves down the stretch.
“He was good, he was solid,” said Richardson of Bishop’s effort. “Everything you could ask for from a goalie.”
For D’Amigo, it was not the outcome he wanted, as he was kept off the scoresheet, but he was still glad to be home.”
“It’s always great to see all the people in the stands that I know,” D’Amigo said. It was great to see them and kind of enjoy my first Thanksgiving, in five or six years.”
Boycott the NHL.

Thanks for the highlights, looked great. I wish they wouldn't put that damn logo in the bottom left corner though, it hides a lot of the action. Great job BSen's with 3 in a row. Who needs NHL!!
Is their no type of mediator that could get involved in this process at this point? Its become very clear that Bettman and Fehr are being VERY well paid to NOT be doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing...which is make a deal happen. What is at stake here is bigger than 2 egos, and I believe if these 2 sides were truely capable of working together to hash out a new CBA, that it would have happened by now. They clearly can't. So something else has to happen.
Read up on DECERTIFICATION folks. Thats the next play for the PA in all of this.
A good article I found on HB that relates what Decertification is all about. We don't want that. Would be the end of Karlsson & Spezza in Ottawa... and possibly the end of the Senators themselves. They could not compete withe the big spending teams like the Rangers & Flyers. As someone tweeted.. Crosby could make up to 50 Million a season while players like Colby Armstrong would make about 50,000.
I hope player agents caution some of these role players what decertification would mean for them. The superstars would be paid very handsomely.. the rest not so much -- if they would have a job at all.
Players would be getting 70%-80% share of HRR with no CBA. I don't care how rich a team is.. they would still lose money.
http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Richard-Cloutier/CBA-Goes-Nuclear-NHLPA-to-Decertify/131/47637
BTW -- the NHL has cancelled the All-Star Game and all games to Dec 14th... Next step they cancel the season.
Most sports start the decertification process and the CBA is signed shortly after without ever going the full decertification and counter suits path. The media right now is blowing it way out of proportion for what it would be. Look at the NBA as an example, it forced the CBA to be signed within a couple weeks. The only reason the NFL took longer is because they were already in the offseason when it happened and not in the middle of a lockout.
The threat of decertification could actually resolve this CBA negotiations and get fans what they want ... NHL hockey in our rinks! (not saying I support it though - I just want this over with asap)

From what Bill Daly said on Hockey Central today.. he is not concerned if the NHLPA decertifies. He used to work in Anti-trust legislation. He didn't say it.. but I got from him that the decertification would not work.. But again my ASSUMPTION.. but him saying he is not concerned could in turn anger the players more to go ahead with it.
The issue is.. right now.. IMO -- the players are thinking with their hearts and their anger... NOT their heads.
Would they not be getting all of the e-mail updates that Fehr sends out? Does EVERY player go on the phone calls? My guess is not...
Neuwirth speaks the truth when he says this is all about protecting the superstar's salaries..
Hamrlik is frustrated with this process. Being through 3 of these probably gives him the right to be frustrated.
Should they have kept it out of the media? Probably.. But then again what player has kept their mouth shut..
I laughed when Campoli got in a verbal argument with an Owner (can't remember which one it was). Campoli may not have a job at the end of this.. so what is he fighting for?
Make that FIVE 16 yr olds in the lineup. They are also minus Graovac as well for tonight..

Don't forget the part where he says he won't back them on the ice anymore...CLASSY!
They should be more concerned with the alienating comments players are making about the people that sign their cheques. There is such a thing as being black listed, just ask Ted Nolan...
Can't believe how much I miss the Stache :(
Yep, stopped 30 out of 31 shots. Right after bishop comes up big in the 3-2 win, lehner responds with an amazing performance as well. Can't wait to see lehner make the big team and there's a great chance he will if its a full lockout
Bingo is on a roll, just imagine how dominant they could be once the offense starts clicking a bit better and they start potting more goals.
Granted, it would suck if the Sens were one of the teams removed, but I would think we're much more viable than say the Isles, Panthers, or Jackets. There's definitely more stability in Ottawa than those areas (plus the city continues to grow).
I mean, can you imagine if the Wild ceased to exist, and we had an option of grabbing Parise or Suter...
Personally (I know most won't agree) but I think parity is good for the NHL. It's good for the league that any team can win on any given night.
Parity is what helped the NHL's revenue growth.
I personally would not want a Sens team that never has a chance to get back to the finals as the big spending teams get all the star players. Melnyk would not be able to spend enough to keep up with them.
Did you hear the latest from an NHL player?
Dave Bolland re-tweeted a fan comment -- calling for the death of Gary Bettman.
He later apologized -- saying he often re-tweets items from fans. Is he that stupid that he doesn't read them first? Or maybe drank too much?
My guess he got called out by either his team rep or one of the Fehrs.
Don't really care much for Bolland... but his comment doesn't exactly surprise me. Guy doesn't seem like the smartest tool in the shed, so. Players should just keep quiet until it's all said and done.
Stars players didn't want to play in Florida then, and they don't want to now. The only way to attract players is to build a winning culture like Detroit or Boston (literally, Patriots/Celtic s/Red Sox/Bruins). Of course, winning will lead to money, and money in turn will bring in the players. But, if you don't have either money or a winning culture, that's what leads to those small market teams failing. There's a reason why they're called small market teams. It's become pretty clear though that owners don't make much from their clubs (unless you're the Leafs...)
==========================================================
Ottawa is a small market team. So is Edmonton/Winnip eg. The Sens made about 2 M $$ last year on about a 53M dollar payroll. How well would they do in decertification ... not very well I would think...
Some NHL players don't want to play in Canada either...
A lot of small market teams could fold if the NHLPA decertifies...
But I see conflicting reports.. if they decertify and they 'win' -- after what could be a 2 yr fight... does every player become a UFA even if he currently has a contract signed under the last CBA?
Make that 2-0 for B-Sens at end first... other goal by Schneider -- assists Eckford, pageau.
B-Sens outshot Bridgeport 16-6.
Make that 5-0 -- another goal by Schneider... nearing the end of the 2nd...
Actually 6-0 now...
Yawn.
Can't wait to see this kid pot 40 a year for the Sens
Still a bit of a long shot, but making a good case for a spot on the world junior team. Might help that Spott is the coach.
Mine went down to... back up but only showing football. They gave another stream in the chat section but I missed it and can't find it.
Firstrowsports doesn't work for me... I guess I miss the rest of the game..
Ya on paper its tough competition, but the kid is averaging almost a goal a game, hard not to consider.
I think if he's playing with a good C like Strome he'd do nothing but light the lamp the kid is probably the most talented goal scorer in the O.
Love to see him there anyway

They were the ones trolling.
Considering this is Puempel's in junior, and he is lighting up the net, scoring nearly 30% of the teams goals; I see no reason why he should not make the junior team, heck since he is actually living up to his draft reputation as Button quoted" the best pure goal scorer in the 2011 draft," he should be playing on Strome's wing in WJC.
I remember when we drafted him, I was puzzled to why they considered him the best pure goal scorer in his class, because he was only a 30 goal scorer, then I found out he was playing for a crappy Petes team, and scoring 30 goals for that team is quite a mile stone. Although he is not plaaying for a crappy team this year, but you got to think how much more goals he would have scored if players like Faksa and Murray started playing better early in the season. Recently these 2 players are playing really well, and Puempels producting is following their play really nicely.
By the way nice to see Zibanejad finally get his first multi point game today, along with Pageau. It would have been nice if he scored a goal aswell, but I guess that is something that will eventually come to him. Evander Kane actually took a while to turn into the 30 goal scorer he is today despite the fact he was drafted fourth overall, I hope Zibanejad really turns into one for the sens in the future.
