Every game the Sens play from here on out could appropriately be labelled the biggest game of their season.

The Ottawa Senators look to build off an electrifying win on Sunday night as they play Game 4 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Pittsburgh Penguins. BSens Season Preview

On the eve of the Binghamton Senators season opener, we again hand the reigns over to Don Rieber of the Examiner in Binghamton.

Don offers his thoughts on the upcoming season and explains why the combination of a new face behind the bench and some added firepower thanks to the NHL lockout, has the BSens prime for big turnaround season.  Take it away, Don!

Changes Bring Renewed Hope to Binghamton

After the Binghamton Senators won the Calder Cup in 2011, to say last season was a struggle would be an understatement. The team finished with a 29-40-5-2 record and a league low 65 points.

With the somwhat surprising resignation of head coach Kurt Kleinendorst in early May, Ottawa didn't waste much time in naming a successor. Former NHL'er and Ottawa assistant, Luke Richardson has taken the reigns. The team finished the exhibition season 3-0 and played well in all facets of the game.

Goaltender Robin Lehner, now 21-years-old, was named playoff MVP two seasons ago and had two of those wins in the exhibition season. He is looking to put a forgettable 2011-2012 season that saw him finish with a record of 13-22-1 and a 3.26 GAA in the AHL, behind him.

“Two years ago was one of the best times of my life,” he said. “Last year was a tough year for us, but right now I’m looking at this season. I worked hard during the summer and I'm a year older now too. I want to learn from my mistakes the last couple years, progress and get better. ”

Lehner also played a few games with the big club in Ottawa, compiling a 3-2 record and a .935 save percentage. One of his three wins was a shutout against the Boston Bruins in February.

“I learned a lot up there,” Lehner said of his time in Ottawa. “The same people that were up there are here now working with the team and that helps.”

“Our team struggled last year and maybe that got put on (Robin) a little too much,” said defenseman Patrick Wiercioch. “He's a world-class goaltender. If you ask anyone around the league who they don't wanna face on any given night, it's probably Robin Lehner. He's got that ability to be a 60-save shutout guy.”

“He's come in in great shape and with a great attitude,” said Richardson of Lehner. “He's a leader on this team even though he's in the net and got the mask on. He was a big part of this team and he's gonna have to be that again this year.”

It is clear that Lehner will be the number one goalie again this season, with Nathan Lawson likely pulling backup duty.

Along with Lehner having one more year of experience, so does the defensive core, which to a man, the players are expecting big things from.

“Always having a good D core is huge in this league,” said winger Mike Hoffman. “I think we have a lot more skill this year both offensively and defensively. If you have better forwards and better defense, you are going to be a better hockey club.”

Defensmen Eric Gryba said the team is bigger, stronger, and tougher than they were last year and drew comparisons to the championship team two years ago.

“When you have a tougher D core, guys pass that mentality on to one another and we are playing pretty well together.” He also said it helps having a defensive-minded coach behind the bench in Richardson.

“We're still young,” said defensive prospect Mark Borowiecki. “But we're hard-working and energetic and I think we have a good team. Boro was here last year and said he learned a lot from both his experience here as well as his time with Ottawa.

“Getting there makes you want to work harder to get back,” he said. “That's the goal and I think it helped me realize just how hard you have to work.”

This is definitely going to be a young squad in Binghamton this year, but with the addition of guys like Mika Zibanejad, Mark Stone and Jakob Silfverberg, who have all proven themselves in other leagues, the offense should get a big boost.

Silfverberg who was a solid player in the Swedish Elite league, Stone coming in from the Western Canadian Junior League, J-G Pageau is from the Quebec Junior League.

“Of course I want to help the team win,” said Silfverberg. “That's what we're all working on, but I've been working on learning and building my confidence as well, I just want to improve every day.”

“I think we have a good mix here of young guys and guys that were here when they won the Calder Cup” said Zibanejad. “We've been good, obviously the preseason doesn't count, but it's good to get a habit of winning and find ways to win.”

Coach Luke Richardson has settled in nicely and echoed the words of Zibanejad about getting into the habit of winning. It is clear early that this team likes their new bench boss and they respect him, which is a tough thing for a rookie coach to earn, especially early in the season.

“We are gonna be big, fast and talented up front,” he said. “Our goaltending will be solid and so will our defense. Good defense leads to good offense; if you play aggressive and do things right, you'll have the puck on your stick more and that's our plan.”

He likes what he has seen so far from the players and said he has implemented systems that play to their strengths. When asked who has impressed him in camp so far, Richardson was ready with a pretty impressive list.

“Our goaltending is solid, with Robin, our defense with Andre Benoit coming back from his time in Europe and up front you are familiar with the Hoffman's, Cannone's, guys like that that are explosive and have experience.”

Richardson said he will obviously be nervous in his his first couple games and expects to make mistakes along the way, but said he will be learning along with everybody else.

Binghamton opens the season Saturday night against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.

Roster moves: Yesterday the BSens assigned Defenseman Ben Blood and goaltender Marc Cheverie to the B-Sens' ECHL affiliate Elmira Jackals. That now leaves 27 players on Binghamton's roster.  The Senators also announced that Ben Bishop has signed an AHL deal and will join the team in Binghamton.

I was hoping to see a bit more of Blood (With a name like that, who wouldn't lol), but this is already a pretty strong D so I can understand sending him down for another year.

I read a few AHL standings predictions that had BSens finishing in 30th and 22nd. I scoffed but admittedly know little about other teams. I know there will be plenty of NHL level talent but I find it hard to believe this team is going to finish that low.

Don - where do you see BSens finishing this year?

I'm definitively no AHL pro, and I'm not saying that we are #1, but the only way Bingo finishes 22-30th is if the lockout finishes early and the Sens grab a bunch of their big name guys.

One of the most important things is that Richardson is going to be coaching the same system, style and attitude requirements that MacLean is. That's key to developing our younger players into NHL ready performers.

I think the B-Sens can be a decent team this year. The big club was young and energetic last year and that took them to the playoffs (as well as stellar coaching, of course). I can see the same thing happening here.

get everyone on facebook twitter, tsn, senschirp, cbc etc.

The #Fans have had enough we are now on #strike! Fans lockout #nhl and look for other sports in 2012-13. time to send the #NHL our message, call or write and network and request hockey from another source, AHL, Ohl etc.

get your money back from center ice, tickets and don't buy and merchandise (unless if its an Alfie jersey of course) we need to make our stand and say this is bullshit~! you nhl will not get my support this year.

this is disrespect to us.
i wanted to watch this season with a great smile as we finally get to see some prospects hit the big time.

cheers sens fans, i wish we had our sens playing.

So excited for the B-Sens this upcoming season. The AHL is going to be a great league due to the NHL lockout..

I can't see them finishing 22 or 30th this year. Some teams will be tough with a lot of NHL talent on them. It's going to be an interesting year..

I hope someone has a stream for tomorrow night...

just asking,

my rant from above about the fans on strike. whats wrong with us voicing our displeasure and says we are on strike and we are not going to spend money if the league has a stoppage over greed?

i would like the league to continue playing now while talks and a new cba are being completed.

i don't see a problem with it.

I guess they don't have the limitations of a roster like the NHL or is it different this year with the lockout. Lots of competition for spots & playing time.. which is good for the team...

I logged on just to give you a thumbs up. I think we should start an strike for each game lost. That would get them to actually put forth some effort to get this done as I get the feeling the NHLPA is waiting until x-mas no matter what out of principle (whatever the principle is)

Mikael wikstrand got drafted this past year as a late rounder as a defenceman.

But he is looking like a solid pick right now, he is playing with Anze kopitar in Mora, but he has got 6 goals and 2 assists in 11 game right now. He only had 3 points in 47 games last year.

Look out for this guy in World juniors.

thinking fans should start protesting the NHL and pickit outside Air canada cennter, yes it will be a drive down there but it would be the easiest place to get lots of people protesting and press so that the NHL listens.

signs could say:

Bring back Canada's game,

Our pastime dont belong in the hands of Americans,

Our game is hostage by greed,

U cant support what isn't there,

Bring professional Hockey back to Canada,

We lost our heritage,

Hockey night in Canada is now a replay,

Hockey will never be a #1 sport if its controlled by americans,

Canadian labour laws should save our game form greed,

This will be a Long winter, thanks NHL

This Sucks, Hockey Doesn't,

Canada deserves its own Pro Hockey league

Fans are not objects.

Fans need Hockey

WE need our sport back,

Fans on Strike,

NHL needs leadership,

This is WAR!

The NHL dont care about us,

Hockey should be played while the new CBA is written.

and i'm sure there could be more...

if we plan a protest in 2 weeks on a staurday and into saturday night the CBC will show the protest!!!

we need to be herd.

the fans need to speak up.

High intensity game. A bit broken at times for Bingo, both at D and in the offensive zone, but for a first game, pretty fun stuff.

Pat Cannone
Pageau

Well Richardson said Silfverberg was "eye-popping" in the Ottawa Citizen, it's now been several periods of pro play (Playoffs and Bingo season game 1) and he's been invisible. I hate how overhyped he has become...let him prove himself at the AHL level for a few years, eat some dirt like the rest of the league and it'll make you a better player down the road.

Lehnzies is amazing, he's done his AHL time, he's a winner and a hunter. He will be our future and he'll be a key cog.

Nice win tonight. From the stands they did not do well he first 40. Lehner kept them in it. He had a few moments early in the game with puck handling. PP needs work as well.

But first game as everyone knows. I have no doubts the offence will come around. Very deep team which will pay off in the long run! Can't wait for next Friday!

You should notice that, despite Silfverberg scoring the rebound goal, Zibanejad was actually the most active and best player on that line.

He drew Penalties on 2 partial breakaway chances, including a shorthanded partial breakaway he had early in the first period.

The good thing about Zibanejad is that he has quick hands, once the puck gets on his stick, he immediately takes a very decieving wrist shot, may not be accurate, however it can fool goalies. He led the team with 4 shots on goal today.

stream : www.thefirstrow.eu/watch/146630/1/watch-ahl:
-w-b-scranton-vsbinghamton-senators.html, will be the best
alternative in seeing all the gamse. We simply change the name of the team playing against the b-sens !!

We did lose the stream in 3rd period, but it came back later .

Lehner kept the team in for the first 2 periods, as they were badly outshot.

GO SENS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!

Lehner was in beast mode last night. He looked so composed from start to finish, making every save look easy. He definitely kept the boys in it through the first two periods until he got some help in the third.

The B-Sens powerplay looked terrible but that can be expected considering it was the first game of the season.

I was happy to see Silfverberg pot his first pro goal on North American soil, but I would have liked to see a bit more from him in that game... But again, it was only the first game. I thought Zibanejad looked the best on that line of him, Silf, and Pageau.
Quote

0 #123 AllStarAlfie 2012-10-14 11:01
I thought lehner was our best player on the ice by far, (I think the bishop trade really helped him step up his game). Other players who were good imo were Benoit, Hoffman, cowen. and pageau as well as zibanejad did pretty well but need to be a bit more consistent throughout.

Gryba, stone and silfverberg did not show well last night but it was only the first game so in no way am I jumping to conclusions. Cowen and Benoit are a lethal pairing btw

I used the AHL pay feed for the BSens Calder Cup winning game and what you saw on the stream is the pay feed. The only advantage to paying $7 a game is the stream will not go down. Not worth it in my opinion.

Sorry guys, been so wrapped up in the start of the season... just saw this was posted. Honestly, I am sure others have already said this, but the talent is going to be better everywhere, due to the lockout.

Unfortunately, Binghamton is in one of the if not the toughest division in the league. It is too early to say where they will finish, but 22-30 is way too low. My early guess is top 10 in the Eastern Conference.
